Postharvest chilling injury is a physiological disorder detrimental to produce quality and shelf-life. Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is susceptible to postharvest chilling injury at temperatures below 12 °C, manifesting as leaf lesions and discoloration. Melatonin, a growth regulator, has reduced postharvest chilling injury severity in produce, but its effect on basil is unknown. Here, we evaluated the impact of an exogenous preharvest melatonin application at 400 μM on basil leaves stored at 3.5 °C for 12 days. Visual parameters, including objective color descriptors, chilling injury index, and damaged surface area, as well as biochemical (total soluble solids, malondialdehyde, and total polyphenol content) and physiological (electrolyte leakage and fresh weight loss) markers for cold stress, were assessed. Melatonin-treated leaves showed reduced symptoms (15–22%) relative to the untreated control after cold storage. The biochemical and physiological parameters displayed subtle changes between treatments after storage. However, melatonin induced alterations before storage (70–90%), suggesting it acted as a stressor.

La cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC) es una de las técnicas empleadas para determinar la hemoglobina glicosilada (HbA1c) y el método de elección para el cribado de hemoglobinopatías estructurales. El objetivo de este caso es mostrar cómo en un análisis de rutina de HbA1c es posible encontrar incidentalmente una hemoglobinopatía.

Cation exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the techniques available for determining glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and also the method of choice for structural hemoglobinopathies screening. The objective of this case is to show how in a routine HbA1c test it is possible to incidentally find a hemoglobinopathy.

This broad review summarizes recent advances and “hot” research topics in nanophononics and elastic, acoustic, and mechanical metamaterials based on results presented by the authors at the EUROMECH 610 Colloquium held on April 25–27, 2022 in Benicássim, Spain. The key goal of the colloquium was to highlight important developments in these areas, particularly new results that emerged during the last two years. This work thus presents a “snapshot” of the state-of-the-art of different nanophononics- and metamaterial-related topics rather than a historical view on these subjects, in contrast to a conventional review article. The introduction of basic definitions for each topic is followed by an outline of design strategies for the media under consideration, recently developed analysis and implementation techniques, and discussions of current challenges and promising applications. This review, while not comprehensive, will be helpful especially for early-career researchers, among others, as it offers a broad view of the current state-of-the-art and highlights some unique and flourishing research in the mentioned fields, providing insight into multiple exciting research directions.

Ascochyta blight is a major biotic constraint of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) production and productivity worldwide caused by Ascochyta fabae. No studies have been performed in Algeria to identify A. fabae isolates or to assess their pathogenicity, and therefore information on local isolates is insufficient. Herein, 14 isolates of A. fabae were obtained from faba bean samples and identified based on morphological traits and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer sequences. All generated sequences have been deposited in GenBank and assigned accession numbers. Pathogenicity tests on faba bean plants revealed that all isolates produced necrotic lesions on aerial parts with variable intensity, classifying them as weakly, moderately, and highly aggressive. The in vitro antifungal activity of Bacillus and Pseudomonas strains against A. fabae isolates showed that Bacillus siamensis B8 and Bacillus mojavensis B31 had the highest suppressive potential against all isolates. Moreover, a negative correlation was found between the aggressiveness of A. fabae isolates and their susceptibility to biocontrol strains. This is the first report on the identification, pathogenicity and in vitro biological control of A. fabae isolates in Algeria. B8 and B31 could be further developed as promising biocontrol agents for the control of the ascochyta blight of faba bean.

Elevated plasma bilirubin levels are a frequent clinical finding. It can be secondary to alterations in any stage of its metabolism: (a) excess bilirubin production (i.e., pathologic hemolysis); (b) impaired liver uptake, with elevation of indirect bilirubin; (c) impaired conjugation, prompted by a defect in the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase; and (d) bile clearance defect, with elevation of direct bilirubin secondary to defects in clearance proteins, or inability of the bile to reach the small bowel through bile ducts. A liver lesion of any cause reduces hepatocyte cell number and may impair the uptake of indirect bilirubin from plasma and diminish direct bilirubin transport and clearance through the bile ducts. Various analytical methods are currently available for measuring bilirubin and its metabolites in serum, urine and feces. Serum bilirubin is determined by (1) diazo transfer reaction, currently, the gold-standard; (2) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC); (3) oxidative, enzymatic, and chemical methods; (4) direct spectrophotometry; and (5) transcutaneous methods. Although bilirubin is a well-established marker of liver function, it does not always identify a lesion in this organ. Therefore, for accurate diagnosis, alterations in bilirubin concentrations should be assessed in relation to patient anamnesis, the degree of the alteration, and the pattern of concurrent biochemical alterations.

Un aumento en los niveles plasmáticos de bilirrubina es una alteración frecuente. Puede deberse a cualquier causa que altere alguna de las fases de su metabolismo: a) producción excesiva de bilirrubina (ej. hemólisis patológica); b) defecto en la captación hepática, con aumento de bilirrubina indirecta); c) defecto de conjugación, por alteración del enzima encargada (UDP-glucuronosiltransferasa); y d) defecto de excreción biliar, con aumento de bilirrubina directa, por defectos en las proteínas encargadas de la excreción, o bien por la imposibilidad del paso de la bilis a través de los conductos biliares hasta el intestino. Una lesión hepática de cualquier causa, al disminuir el número de hepatocitos, puede producir una disminución de la captación de bilirrubina indirecta desde el plasma y una disminución del transporte y excreción de la bilirrubina directa hacia los conductillos biliares. Se pueden usar diferentes técnicas analíticas para medir la bilirrubina y sus metabolitos en el suero, la orina y las heces. La bilirrubina sérica se mide mediante (1) la "reacción diazo", actualmente el método de referencia; (2) cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC); (3) métodos oxidativos, enzimáticos y químicos; (4) espectrofotometría directa; y (5) métodos transcutáneos. Aunque la bilirrubina es un marcador clásico de disfunción hepática, no siempre indica una lesión de este órgano. Several structures are built on collapsible soils in the mining and petroleum industries and on civil sites. In order to analyze the stability of such structures, one must properly study the unsaturated soil behavior. Collapsible soils are frequent sand soil that are susceptible to a significant and sudden reduction in volume upon wetting. An important factor is matric suction, which es related to moisture content through the soil water Characteristic Curve (SWCC), the SWCC is obtained through a filter paper technique and provides a valuable relationship between suction and water content unique to soils. This measures the influence of parameters on the behavior of the structure of collapsible soil. Interactions between structure and soil must be properly evaluated as the bearing capacities of shallow and deep foundations are linked to properties of soil suction, moisture, and grade saturation. This work has experimentally measured the parameters of suction and moisture on the behavior of collapsible sands, where an oil storage tank will be built in the city of Lambayeque in Peru. Undisturbed soil specimens obtained from geotechnical exploration campaigns were used. The filter paper method used in this study was that proposed by models of Brooks-Corey and Van Genuchten. Results show consistent values near reported values from literature.

Objetivo: examinar la relación entre fragilidad y redes sociales en personas no institucionalizadas mayores de 75 años.Fundamento: la fragilidad tiene un impacto negativo en el envejecimiento exitoso. La baja actividad física, la inactividad y la movilidad restringida son factores de riesgo que aumentan la fragilidad en las personas mayores. Las relaciones sociales de las personas mayores tienen un efecto en la salud a través de mecanismos psicosociales e influyen en los estados psicológicos o cognitivos.Diseño: se realizó un estudio transversal utilizando un cuestionario en una muestra de 326 individuos mayores de 75 años en Castellón (España), durante 2015, y seleccionado mediante muestreo intencional.Método: El estudio se realizó en el contexto de un programa de análisis y prevención de fragilidad. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de un cuestionario adaptado de una encuesta realizada por FRALLE.Resultados: 12.9% de los encuestados no vieron a ninguno de sus hijos más de una vez al mes. El 42,6% no vio a ningún amigo más de una vez al mes. En términos de participación comunitaria, el 66.9% de la muestra no fue a ninguna asociación cultural o club; esta proporción fue mayor entre las mujeres (72.8%). El puntaje promedio para el índice de vínculos familiares es mayor entre los no frágiles (x̅ = 2.64) que los frágiles (x̅ = 2.41) (p = 0,000). Los resultados muestran una mayor posibilidad de fragilidad para las mujeres (OR = 2.128; IC 95% 1.179 - 3.840).Conclusión: las redes familiares y la diversidad de las redes sociales fueron menores entre las personas frágiles. Relevancia para la práctica clínica: conocer los factores que influyen en las redes sociales de los ancianos permitirá a las enfermeras implementar acciones que ayuden a reducir la fragilidad.

Salivary components may suffer variations that can be detected by chemical determinations. The aim of this work was to determine physical and biochemical characteristics of the saliva of a group of diabetic children compared to those of a control group. Relation to oral health indices was also determined. Twenty diabetic children (3-15-years-old) and 21 control children (5-12-years-old) were included in this study. Total proteins, sugars and calcium were determined by colorimetric methods, and glucose, urea, alpha-amylase and acid phosphatase by enzymatic methods. Our results demonstrated that acidic pH, diminished salivary flow rate and excess foam are usually present in saliva of diabetic children. Total sugars, glucose, urea and total proteins were greater in diabetic patients than controls, while calcium values were decreased. These differences were confirmed by the discrimination test. Diabetic children have higher DMFT-dmft-deft and DMFS-dmfs-defs values compared to those of the control children despite their lower sugar intake. Some salivary components in addition to the diminished flow rate could be involved in the characterization of the oral health state of diabetic children.

Se analizaron las muertes registradas como homicidio en México de 1979-1992. El estudio se basó en fuente secundaria, siendo las variables analizadas: año, edad, sexo y causa externa de traumatismos y envenenamientos según CIE IX Rev.(E960-E969). Se utilizó un modelo de regresión Poisson para las causas más frecuentes, obteniendo riesgos relativos según edad y sexo. El grupo de referencia fue el de 10-14 años y el sexo femenino. Se registraron 198,485 muertes por Homicidio, con un promedio anual de 14,177 y diario de 39. La principal causa fue ataque con arma de fuego y explosivos(56%). El riesgo relativo más alto fue para el grupo de 35-39 años, con RR 15,4 IC(95%) 14,9-16,0, en comparación al de referencia. El sexo masculino presentó un riesgo relativo 10,1 veces mayor que el femenino, ajustado por edad IC10.0-10.3. Los resultados llaman la atención sobre la necesidad de profundizar y analizar el problema de los homicidios bajo una perspectiva multidisciplinaria.

Cuando se conciben las causas de muerte como el resultado de procesos mórbidos que pudieron haber sido evitados con distintos tipos de medidas económicas, sociales, de servicios de salud y los avances en el conocimiento científico y tecnológico, queda clara la existencia de una determinación estructural que impide que amplios sectores de la población transiten hacia "perfiles epidemiológicos modernos". Se usaron las bases de datos anuales sobre defunciones, entre 1979 y 1991, generadas por el INEGI/DGESSA para 5 estados fronterizos. Se ajustaron las defunciones según el procedimiento Preston-Coale y se construyeron tablas de vida para 1980/1990. Se encontraron los aportes de los grupos de causas evitables por sexo y edad a las ganancias en la esperanza de vida en el período según el procedimiento de Pollard. Entre los hallazgos se destacan: una discreta ganancia en la esperanza de vida, entre otras razones, debido a la permanencia de una alta contribución de defunciones que pudieron haber sido evitadas (50%). En contra de lo esperado, el género masculino disminuyó la diferencia en la esperanza de vida con respecto a sus congéneres. La sobremortalidad masculina sigue siendo explicada por este tipo de causas, en donde los accidentes y violencias aportan altos porcentajes.

Significant deterioration of public space in contemporary Latin American cities raises a question about reasons of massive social polarization and segregation. Apart from constant desire from the Municipal level to improve and enlarge public domain, quality of regulative- planned spaces did not manage to assemble all social actors. At the same time, as a product of structural changes in economy, self- generated and spontaneous public spaces appear at unusual locations, being not recognized as a collectively accessible sphere. This paper tries to see “El Hueco”, bazaar- like space in the centre of Medellin, /Colombia, as an interesting public arena and naturally formed public space where commercial activities represent a background for vibrant exchange interface for all urban inhabitants. By using the methodology of Milton Santos, urban space of “El Hueco” is analyzed as a complex process. Then, a set of interventions is proposed, the so- called “software” solutions, in order to preserve “El Hueco” as an authentic generic space. In addition, this paper concludes by asking for moderation processes between City Authorities, local entrepreneurs, informal sector and customers, so that innovation- based development and cost- reduction infrastructure are stimulated.

The LHCb detector is a dedicated heavy flavour experiment operating at the Large Hadron Collider designed to pursue an extensive study of CP violation in the beauty and charm sectors. In the first part of this contribution, important milestones towards the measurement of CP violation in the beauty sector using B± and Bs0 decays are presented. In the second part, highlights of the searches of CP violation in the charm sector are reported.

Abstract Background Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are food-borne pathogens of great importance and feature prominently in the etiology of developing world enteritis and travellers’ diarrhoea. Increasing antimicrobial resistant Campylobacter prevalence has been described globally, yet data from Peru is limited. Our objective was to describe the prevalence trends of fluoroquinolone and macrolide-resistant C. jejuni and C. coli stool isolates from three regions in Peru over a ten-year period. Methods Surveillance for enteric pathogens was conducted in Lima, Iquitos and Cusco between 2001 and 2010. Campylobacter stool isolates were tested for susceptibilities to ciprofloxacin, azithromycin and erythromycin. Susceptibilities were reviewed for 4652 isolates from Lima ( n = 3419), Iquitos ( n = 625) and Cusco ( n = 608). Results Comparing the study periods of 2001-2005 and 2006-2010, prevalence of ciprofloxacin-resistant C. jejuni isolates rose in the study areas of Lima (73.1% to 89.8%, p p C. coli rates also increased in Lima (48.1% to 87.4%, p p = 0.005). Small but significant increases in azithromycin-resistant and erythromycin-resistant C. jejuni prevalence were noted in Iquitos (2.2% to 14.9%, p p = 0.002), and erythromycin-resistant C. coli rates increased in Lima (0.0% to 5.3%, p = 0.038). The prevalence of C. jejuni isolates resistant to both ciprofloxacin and azithromycin increased in Iquitos (0.3% to 14.9%, p C. jejuni isolates resistant to both ciprofloxacin and erythromycin rose in Iquitos (0.0% to 14.9%, p C. coli prevalence increased in Lima (0.0% to 5.3%, p = 0.034). Conclusions These results have implications for the empirical management of enterocolitis in Peru. Ongoing surveillance is essential to guide appropriate antimicrobial use in this setting. Local epidemiological studies to explore the relationship between increasing antimicrobial resistance and agricultural or human antibiotic use may be valuable.

Abstract Background Human Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. Transmission is a complex phenomenon involving biological and environmental factors of humans, parasites and mosquitoes. Among more than 500 anopheline species, only a few species from different branches of the mosquito evolutionary tree transmit malaria, suggesting that their vectorial capacity has evolved independently. Anopheles albimanus (subgenus Nyssorhynchus) is an important malaria vector in the Americas. The divergence time between Anopheles gambiae, the main malaria vector in Africa, and the Neotropical vectors has been estimated to be 100 My. To better understand the biological basis of malaria transmission and to develop novel and effective means of vector control, there is a need to explore the mosquito biology beyond the An. gambiae complex. Results We sequenced the transcriptome of the An. albimanus adult female. By combining Sanger, 454 and Illumina sequences from cDNA libraries derived from the midgut, cuticular fat body, dorsal vessel, salivary gland and whole body, we generated a single, high-quality assembly containing 16,669 transcripts, 92% of which mapped to the An. darlingi genome and covered 90% of the core eukaryotic genome. Bidirectional comparisons between the An. gambiae, An. darlingi and An. albimanus predicted proteomes allowed the identification of 3,772 putative orthologs. More than half of the transcripts had a match to proteins in other insect vectors and had an InterPro annotation. We identified several protein families that may be relevant to the study of Plasmodium-mosquito interaction. An open source transcript annotation browser called GDAV (Genome-Delinked Annotation Viewer) was developed to facilitate public access to the data generated by this and future transcriptome projects. Conclusions We have explored the adult female transcriptome of one important New World malaria vector, An. albimanus. We identified protein-coding transcripts involved in biological processes that may be relevant to the Plasmodium lifecycle and can serve as the starting point for searching targets for novel control strategies. Our data increase the available genomic information regarding An. albimanus several hundred-fold, and will facilitate molecular research in medical entomology, evolutionary biology, genomics and proteomics of anopheline mosquito vectors. Abstract Background Controversy exists with regard to the impact that the different components of diagnosis delay may have on the degree of invasion and prognosis in patients with colorectal cancer. The follow-up strategies after treatment also vary considerably. The aims of this study are: a) to determine if the symptoms-to-diagnosis interval and the treatment delay modify the survival of patients with colorectal cancer, and b) to determine if different follow-up strategies are associated with a higher survival rate. Methods/Design Multi-centre study with prospective follow-up in five regions in Spain (Galicia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Aragón and Valencia) during the period 2010-2012. Incident cases are included with anatomopathological confirmation of colorectal cancer (International Classification of Diseases 9th revision codes 153-154) that formed a part of a previous study (n = 953). At the time of diagnosis, each patient was given a structured interview. Their clinical records will be reviewed during the follow-up period in order to obtain information on the explorations and tests carried out after treatment, and the progress of these patients. Symptoms-to-diagnosis interval is defined as the time calculated from the diagnosis of cancer and the first symptoms attributed to cancer. Treatment delay is defined as the time elapsed between diagnosis and treatment. In non-metastatic patients treated with curative intention, information will be obtained during the follow-up period on consultations performed in the digestive, surgery and oncology departments, as well as the endoscopies, tumour markers and imaging procedures carried out. Local recurrence, development of metastases in the follow-up, appearance of a new tumour and mortality will be included as outcome variables. Actuarial survival analysis with Kaplan-Meier curves, Cox regression and competitive risk survival analysis will be performed. Discussion This study will make it possible to verify if the different components of delay have an impact on survival rate in colon cancer and rectal cancer. In consequence, this multi-centre study will be able to detect the variability present in the follow-up of patients with colorectal cancer, and if this variability modifies the prognosis. Ideally, this study could determine which follow-up strategies are associated with a better prognosis in colorectal cancer.

Abstract Background Enterococci have emerged as the third most common cause of nosocomial infections, requiring bactericidal antimicrobial therapy. Although vancomycin resistance is a major problem in clinics and has emerged in an important extend in farm animals, few studies have examined it in wild animals. To determine the prevalence of vanA-containing Enterococcus strains among faecal samples of Seagulls (Larus cachinnans) of Berlengas Natural Reserve of Portugal, we developed a proteomic approach integrated with genomic data. The purpose was to detect the maximum number of proteins that vary in different enterococci species which are thought to be connected in some, as yet unknown, way to antibiotic resistance. Results From the 57 seagull samples, 54 faecal samples showed the presence of Enterococcus isolates (94.7%). For the enterococci, E. faecium was the most prevalent species in seagulls (50%), followed by E. faecalis and E. durans (10.4%), and E. hirae (6.3%). VanA-containing enterococcal strains were detected in 10.5% of the 57 seagull faecal samples studied. Four of the vanA-containing enterococci were identified as E. faecium and two as E. durans. The tet(M) gene was found in all five tetracycline-resistant vanA strains. The erm(B) gene was demonstrated in all six erythromycin-resistant vanA strains. The hyl virulence gene was detected in all four vanA-containing E. faecium isolates in this study, and two of them harboured the purK1 allele. In addition these strains also showed ampicillin and ciprofoxacin resistance. The whole-cell proteomic profile of vanA-containing Enterococcus strains was applied to evaluate the discriminatory power of this technique for their identification. The major differences among species-specific profiles were found in the positions corresponding to 97-45 kDa. Sixty individualized protein spots for each vanA isolate was identified and suitable for peptide mass fingerprinting measures by spectrometry measuring (MALDI/TOF MS) and their identification through bioinformatic databases query. The proteins were classified in different groups according to their biological function: protein biosynthesis, ATP synthesis, glycolysis, conjugation and antibiotic resistance. Taking into account the origin of these strains and its relation to infectious processes in humans and animals, it is important to explore the proteome of new strains which might serve as protein biomarkers for biological activity. Conclusions The comprehensive description of proteins isolated from vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and E. durans may provide new targets for development of antimicrobial agents. This knowledge may help to identify new biomarkers of antibiotic resistance and virulence factors.

Abstract Background Modern biology uses experimental systems that involve the exploration of phenotypic variation as a result of the recombination of several genomes. Such systems are useful to investigate the functional evolution of metabolic networks. One such approach is the analysis of transcript and metabolite profiles. These kinds of studies generate a large amount of data, which require dedicated computational tools for their analysis. Results This paper presents a novel software named *omeSOM (transcript/metabol-ome Self Organizing Map) that implements a neural model for biological data clustering and visualization. It allows the discovery of relationships between changes in transcripts and metabolites of crop plants harboring introgressed exotic alleles and furthermore, its use can be extended to other type of omics data. The software is focused on the easy identification of groups including different molecular entities, independently of the number of clusters formed. The *omeSOM software provides easy-to-visualize interfaces for the identification of coordinated variations in the co-expressed genes and co-accumulated metabolites. Additionally, this information is linked to the most widely used gene annotation and metabolic pathway databases. Conclusions *omeSOM is a software designed to give support to the data mining task of metabolic and transcriptional datasets derived from different databases. It provides a user-friendly interface and offers several visualization features, easy to understand by non-expert users. Therefore, *omeSOM provides support for data mining tasks and it is applicable to basic research as well as applied breeding programs.
