1. Simulation of diffraction and scattering using the Wigner Distribution Function

Abstract

X-ray phase-contrast imaging enhances soft tissue visualization by leveraging the phase shift of X-rays passing through materials. It permits to minimize radiation exposure due to high contrast, as well as high resolution imaging limited by the wavelength of the X-rays. Phase retrieval extracts the phase shift computationally, but simulated images fail to recreate low-frequency noise observed in experimental images. To this end, we propose a new method to simulate phase contrast images using the Wigner Distribution Function. This permits the simulation of wave and particle effects simultaneously and simulates images photon by photon. Here, we give a first demonstration of the method by simulating the Gaussian double-slit experiment. It has the potential for realistic simulation of low-dose imaging., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

3. Relative stopping power precision in time-of-flight proton CT

Abstract

Proton computed tomography (CT) is similar to x-ray CT but relies on protons rather than photons to form an image. In its most common operation mode, the measured quantity is the amount of energy that a proton has lost while traversing the imaged object from which a relative stopping power map can be obtained via tomographic reconstruction. To this end, a calorimeter which measures the energy deposited by protons downstream of the scanned object has been studied or implemented as energy detector in several proton CT prototypes. An alternative method is to measure the proton's residual velocity and thus its kinetic energy via the time of flight (TOF) between at least two sensor planes. In this work, we study the precision, i.e. image noise, which can be expected from TOF proton CT systems. We rely on physics models on the one hand and statistical models of the relevant uncertainties on the other to derive closed form expressions for the noise in projection images. The TOF measurement error scales with the distance between the TOF sensor planes and is reported as velocity error in ps/m. We use variance reconstruction to obtain noise maps of a water cylinder phantom given the scanner characteristics and additionally reconstruct noise maps for a calorimeter-based proton CT system as reference. We find that TOF proton CT with 30 ps/m velocity error reaches similar image noise as a calorimeter-based proton CT system with 1% energy error (1 sigma error). A TOF proton CT system with a 50 ps/m velocity error produces slightly less noise than a 2% calorimeter system. Noise in a reconstructed TOF proton CT image is spatially inhomogeneous with a marked increase towards the object periphery. This systematic study of image noise in TOF proton CT can serve as a guide for future developments of this alternative solution for estimating the residual energy of protons after the scanned object.

6. A Time-Of-Flight-Based Reconstruction for Real-Time Prompt-Gamma Imaging in Protontherapy

Abstract

We are currently conceiving, through (MC) simulation, a multi-channel gamma detector array (TIARA for Time-of-flight Imaging ARrAy) for the online monitoring of protontherapy treatments. By measuring the Time-Of-Flight (TOF) between a beam monitor placed upstream and the Prompt-Gamma (PG) detector, our goal is to reconstruct the PG vertex distribution to detect a possible deviation of proton beam delivery. In this paper, two non-iterative reconstruction strategies are proposed. The first is based on the resolution of an analytical formula describing the PG vertex distribution in 3D. Here, it was resolved under a one-dimensional approximation in order to measure a potential proton range shift along the beam direction. The second is based on the calculation of the Centre-Of-Gravity (COG) of the TIARA pixel detectors counts and also provides 3D information on a possible beam displacement. The PG vertex reconstruction was evaluated in two different scenarios. A coincidence time resolution of 100 ps (rms) can be attained in single proton regime (operating a reduction of the beam current) and using an external beam monitor to provide a start trigger for the TOF measurement. Under these conditions, MC simulations have shown that a millimetric proton range shift sensitivity can be achieved at 2$\sigma$ with 10$^{8}$ incident protons. This level of accuracy would allow to act in real-time if the treatment does not conform to treatment plan. A worst case scenario of a 1 ns (rms) TOF resolution was also considered to demonstrate that a degraded timing information can be compensated by increasing the acquisition statistics: in this case, a 2 mm range shift would be detectable at 2$\sigma$ with 10$^{9}$ incident protons. The COG method has shown excellent capabilities of detecting lateral beam displacements: a 2 mm sensitivity was found at 2$\sigma$ with 10$^{8}$ incident protons.

7. A 100 ps TOF Detection System for On-Line Range- Monitoring in Hadrontherapy

Abstract

The accuracy of hadrontherapy treatment is currently limited by ion-range uncertainties. In order to fully exploit the potential of this technique, we propose the development of a novel system for online control of particle therapy, based on TOF-resolved (time-of-flight) Prompt Gamma (PG) imaging with 100 ps time resolution. Our aim is to detect a possible deviation of the proton range with respect to treatment planning within the first few irradiation spots at the beginning of the session. The system consists of a diamond-based beam hodoscope for single proton tagging, operated in time coincidence with one or more gamma detectors placed downstream of the patient. The TOF between the proton time of arrival in the hodoscope and the PG detection time provides an indirect measurement of the proton range in the patient with a precision strictly related to the system time resolution. With a single ~38 cm$^{3}$ BaF2 detector placed at 15 cm from a heterogeneous PMMA target, we obtained a coincidence time resolution of 101 ps (rms). This system allowed us to measure the thickness and position of an air cavity within a PMMA target, and the associated proton range shift: a 3 mm shift can be detected at 2$\sigma$ confidence level within a single large irradiation spot (~10$^{8}$ protons). We are currently conceiving a multi-channel PG timing detector with 3D target coverage. Each pixel will provide the PG detection time and its hit position, that can be used to reconstruct the 3D distribution of PG vertices in the patient. Our approach does not require collimation and allows to dramatically increase the detection efficiency. 8. Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) for compact beam source modelling in Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract

A method is proposed and evaluated to model large and inconvenient phase space files used in Monte Carlo simulations by a compact Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). The GAN is trained based on a phase space dataset to create a neural network, called Generator (G), allowing G to mimic the multidimensional data distribution of the phase space. At the end of the training process, G is stored with about 0.5 million weights, around 10 MB, instead of few GB of the initial file. Particles are then generated with G to replace the phase space dataset. This concept is applied to beam models from linear accelerators (linacs) and from brachytherapy seed models. Simulations using particles from the reference phase space on one hand and those generated by the GAN on the other hand were compared. 3D distributions of deposited energy obtained from source distributions generated by the GAN were close to the reference ones, with less than 1% of voxel-by-voxel relative difference. Sharp parts such as the brachytherapy emission lines in the energy spectra were not perfectly modeled by the GAN. Abstract

Introduction: We propose a method for prompt-gamma verification of proton range during particle therapy, called Prompt-Gamma Energy Integration (PGEI). Method: This method is based on the measurement of the total energy deposited in a set of detectors located around a patient. It is particularly suited in the case of high-instantaneous beam intensities, like for pulsed beams extracted from a synchro-cyclotron. GATE simuations were used to evaluate the sensitivity, and dedicated scintillators were tested as a function of beam intensity. Results and discussion: Simulations show that millimetric range shifts can be measured at a beam-spot scale. The sensitivity is slightly degraded as compared to the Prompt-Gamma Peak Integration Method, for which Time-of-Flight can be employed to reduce the background in single-photon detection conditions at cyclotron accelerators. Experimentally, lead tungstate scintillators have shown to cope with the high instantaneous gamma count rates for PGEI at synchrocyclotrons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Digitizer Unit plays an important role in modeling using Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE), a Geant4-based platform used for numerical simulations in medical imaging and radiotherapy. It simulates the response of the photodetection components using a sequence of analytical and semi-analytical models. The Digitizer Unit was written for the first version of GATE approximately 20 years ago. Since then, it has in parts grown in a code that can be hardly maintained. Some parts of the code were unused or duplicated; some of the functionalities were not working anymore. Therefore, the GATE Digitizer Unit update is required in order to incorporate the novelties of Geant4 to update its current version and add new features. In this article, the implementation of the new GATE Digitizer Unit (since version 9.3) is presented. 29. Neutron elastic scattering kernel for Monte Carlo next-event estimators in Tripoli-4®.

Abstract

This paper presents the implementation and the numerical validation of the exponential track length estimator (eTLE) for neutron transport in Tripoli-4®. The eTLE is a next-event estimator (NEE), which has the aim of doing variance reduction when paired with a forced-flight method. Like any other NEE, it hinges on deterministic transport through volumes with an attenuation factor applied to the particle's weight. The application of NEEs to neutron-transport problems is impeded by the treatment of Doppler broadening. Indeed, the free-gas thermal treatment complicates the kinematic laws and changes the scattering probability, compared with an isotope at rest. Moreover, in crystalline materials, coherent elastic scattering is on the surface incompatible with NEEs due to its discrete angle scattering distribution. Because certain of the scattering angles are forbidden by the nature of the discrete distribution, and because NEEs are weighted by the differential scattering probability, the naive implementation of the NEE is biased. The paper surveys the evaluation of this quantity for the free-gas thermal treatment and for the coherent elastic scattering. Results to validate the implementations are benchmarked on a simple configuration against the classical unbiased track-length estimator (TLE) for several scattering nuclei and moderators. Abstract

International audience; In computed tomography, scanning the entire object is sometimes impossible, causing truncated projection data. Reconstruction is however still possible: using differentiated backprojection, the Hilbert transform of the object can be calculated and inverted along line segments in the field-of-view. When two endpoints of the line segment are outside the object extent, a stable analytic reconstruction formula exists. When only one endpoint is outside the object extent, every pixel can be reconstructed, but no inversion formula is known yet. Uniqueness of the inverse Hilbert transform is nevertheless guaranteed along such segments, and a numerical inverse can be used. Most pixels of the field-of-view accept more than one "one-endpoint line segment" and one can choose the direction; we propose here to select the optimal direction based on an empirical criterion. Image quality improvement is assessed against a reconstruction that uses a single direction for every pixel.

Abstract

International audience; Compton cameras have the potential to become an emerging technology in Nuclear Medicine. Previous studies have shown electronic collimation allows a gain in detection efficiency of 20 with respect to standard collimated cameras. In this work, we present ongoing simulation studies for further enhancing detection efficiency. To this end, we simulated with GATE/Geant4 a Compton camera made of a scatterer detector based on the prototype under development by CLaRyS collaboration consisting of double-sided silicon strip detectors and an ideal absorber covering all the sides of the scatterer except the entrance surface.We studied the performance of the camera by varying the number of scatterer layers in a range comprised between 5 and 25 layers separated by a distance of 10 mm between them. The energy resolution was set to 2.5% at 200 keV and the energy threshold was set to 5 keV. True coincidences sorted by event identification were analyzed. Detection efficiency was obtained as the fraction of events that produces a detected coincidence. For comparison purposes, ideal absorption was also considered inthe studied GE Healthcare Infinia collimated camera (HEGP and MEGP collimators). The detection efficiency was approximated by the geometrical efficiency of the collimator, neglecting septal penetration. Monochromatic gamma sources emitting in a range comprised between 140 keV and 511 keV were employed. The source was located at 100 mm from the first layer, in the center of the transverse surface. The same distance was considered from the source to the collimator surface. Preliminary results showed an increase of detection efficiency by a factor 80 (resp 95) compared to the HEGP (resp MEGP) collimator when the Compton camera based on 25 scatterer layers was considered. In the future, we plan to extend the work to the study of spatial resolution and to the comparison with innovative SPECT systems.

Abstract

International audience; The efficiency of hadrontherapy could benefit from an online ion range monitoring. This work focuses on a CLaRyS collaboration development: a diamond-based hodoscope in the context of Prompt-Gamma range verification. It aims to provide temporal and spatial tagging of incoming ions. To perform bunch-by-bunch tagging with the best time resolution achievable, the hodoscope has to be very fast and radiation hard. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond detectors exhibit intrinsic properties that would satisfy these requirements. Single channel detectors made of single-crystal and polycrystalline diamonds together with Diamonds grown On Iridium (DOI) have been built. For the two last ones, 2 × 8 channels single diamond double-side stripped prototypes have also been tested. Diamond detectors were characterized with 68 MeV protons at ARRONAX-Nantes and with 8.5 keV X-rays micro-beam at the ESRF-Grenoble. In ARRONAX, a 59 ps RMS Time-of-Flight resolution was measured between a single-crystal diamond and a DOI sample. Using X-rays, a 103 ps RMS intrinsic timing resolution was achieved on a polycrystalline CVD stripped prototype. In addition to time measurements, the 68 MeV proton beam was used to evaluate the single proton detection efficiency on the polycrystalline CVD and DOI samples. Results were found to be 92% for the polycrystalline against 50 % for the DOI. The detection efficiency of the polycrystalline stripped sample was measured at ESRF. A 100% bunch detection efficiency was easily achieved at strip crossings but severe drops were observed in the inter-strip gaps highlighting a too wide (100 µm) gap (present prototype design). These results encourage the prototyping of a new demonstrator equipped with four stripped diamond sensors (single or polycrystalline) read by a dedicated fast readout integrated electronics developed at LPSC.

Abstract

International audience; Uncertainties in the ion range mean that the ideal ballistic properties of ions are not fully exploited in hadron therapy. Prompt γ imaging using a Compton camera has been proposed as a method of range verification for hadron therapy. Previous Monte Carlo studies of the CLaRyS Compton camera prototype demonstrated a 2 mm precision in the measured proton range for 108 particle histories using an iterative method of reconstruction of the γ emission profile. Using a hodoscope the reconstruction is simplified as for each detected event, the number of possible solutions is reduced to just two. Whilst the line cone reconstruction method is much faster than the iterative method, its precision was found to be worse due to the inability to discriminate between the two solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of temporal resolution on the precision of the range measured using the line cone reconstruction method and to propose a method of solution discrimination based on the time flight (TOF). To this end, GATE Monte Carlo simulations were performed. Protons of 160 MeV (109) were generated towards a cylindrical PMMA phantom. The GatePulseAdder was used to record coincidences between the scatterer and absorber stages of the CLaRyS camera. For each set of coincidences the line cone reconstruction was performed. For each solution, a TOF was estimated for the corresponding track (proton + γ) and compared to the TOF given by the simulation. The difference between the two, ΔTOF, was used to discriminate between the two solutions. The effect of the temporal resolution was investigated by placing an upper threshold on ΔTOF and the resulting emission profiles were compared to the real γ emission profile. It was found that a better temporal resolution resulted in a profile which more closely matches the real profile. It is envisaged to redesign the CLaRyS Compton camera with a fast scintillator such as CeBr3 to perform online range verification in hadron therapy.

Abstract

International audience; The ballistic property of ion beams is a key issue in hadrontherapy. Online ion range assessment during treatment would permit to fully exploit this advantage. In this context, Prompt-Gamma (PG) imaging using a Compton camera has been proposed by the French CLaRyS collaboration. The originality of the system is the use of a beam-tagging hodoscope that would provide temporal and spatial information on the incoming ions. This hodoscope at first relied on an array of scintillating fibres. To reach higher counting rate and a timing resolution of 100 ps, the collaboration has initiated recently the development of a diamond hodoscope. (CLaRyS Ultra Fast Timing). Diamond were selected for their very fast response and radiation hardness. Initially, for characterization purposes, pad detectors made of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) single-crystal and polycrystalline diamonds as well as Diamonds grown On Iridium (DOI) were built. Then, to satisfy the position-sensitive criterion in the hodoscope prototyping, double-side stripped demonstrators were designed and assembled with custom discrete current preamplifiers at LPSC in Grenoble. Both pad and strip detectors have been characterized under various irradiation conditions. At GANIL, a 18 ps RMS Time-Of-Flight resolution has been obtained between a single-crystal and a DOI pad detectors with 95 MeV/u 12C ions. The same two detectors exhibit a 59 ps RMS Time-Of-Flight resolution when tested with 68 MeV protons in ARRONAX-Nantes. Single 68 MeV proton detection efficiency has been evaluated with two 1 cm² pad detectors: one polycrystalline and one DOI. The results are respectively 92% and 50%. Finally, stripped sensors were tested with a 8.5 keV pulsed X-Ray micro-beam at European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. A 100% detection efficiency and a 103 ps RMS time resolution were measured at several strips crossings with the polycrystalline sample. In conclusion, present results encourage, in a near future, the development of a larger area prototype made of four diamonds in a mosaic arrangement and read by a dedicated and integrated fast readout electronics currently developed at LPSC.

International audience; IntroductionHadrontherapy treatments rely on the estimation of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE). Biophysical models, such as the Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM) [1] and the Nanodosimetry Oxidative stress model (NanOx) [2], evaluate the RBE using the calculation of specific energy spectra at micrometric scale (MKM, Nanox) and/or nanometric scale (LEM, Nanox). For the NanOx formalism, the chemical energy based on free radical production during irradiation is also considered. This study aims at benchmarking GEANT4-DNA and LQD/PHYCHEML/CHEM for the simulation of specific and lineal energy spectra and radiolysis species. Physical and chemical data are estimated for electron [1-100 keV], proton [1-250 MeV] and carbone ion [1 MeV/n- 400 MeV/n] monoenergetic beams. Material and Methods.Geant4-DNA physics lists are tested with the different options available. These options are recommended for discrete particle interactions and use different electron elastic and inelastic models. LQD [3] uses CDW-EIS calculation for ionizations induced by ions. Three-dimensional energy transfer points are calculated in thin liquid water slices. Transfer points are analyzed with the TED code to calculate, in micrometric and nanometric targets, the specific and the lineal energy. Radiochemical species (e^(-aq), OH., H_2 O_2.,O_2.), are calculated with the Geant4-DNA chemistry module and with PHYCHEML/CHEM modules associated to LQD. Results are then extrapolated to SOBP by superposing appropriate monoenergetic ion tracks.Results.The comparison of the results obtained with Geant4-DNA and LQD will be presented for monoenergetic beams as well as for SOBP. This study is preliminary to a full implementation of MKM and NanOx biophysical models into the GATE platform and the associated physical and chemical databases.Bibliography1. Hawkins RB.
