Abstract

Abstract Background Migrating passerines in North America have shown sharp declines. Understanding habitat selection and threats along migration paths are critical research needs, but details about migrations have been limited due to the difficulty of tracking small birds. Recent technological advances of tiny GPS-tags provide new opportunities to delineate fine-scale movements in small passerines during a life stage that has previously been inherently difficult to study. Methods We investigated habitat selection along migration routes for a temperate-zone migratory passerine, the Golden-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia atricapilla), given GPS tags on California wintering grounds. We used a resource selection function combined with conditional logistic regression to compare matched sets of known stopover locations and available but unused locations to determine how land cover class, vegetation greenness and climate variables influence habitat selection during migration. We also provide general migration descriptions for this understudied species including migration distance, duration, and elevation, and repeated use of stopover areas. Results We acquired 22 tracks across 19 individuals, with a total of 541 valid spring and fall migration locations. Birds traveled to breeding grounds in Alaska and British Columbia along coastal routes, selecting for shrubland and higher vegetation greenness in both migration seasons as well as grasslands during fall migration. However, model interactions showed they selected sites with lower levels of greenness when in forest (both seasons) and shrubland (fall only), which may reflect their preference for more open habitats or represent a trade-off in selection between habitat type and productivity. Birds also selected for locations with higher daily maximum temperature during spring migration. Routes during spring migration were lower in elevation on average, shorter in duration, and had fewer long stopovers than in fall migration. For two birds, we found repeated use of the same stopover areas in spring and fall migration. Conclusions Using miniaturized GPS, this study provides new insight into habitat selection along migration routes for a common temperate-zone migrating songbird, contributing to a better understanding of full annual cycle models, and informing conservation efforts. Golden-crowned Sparrows selected for specific habitats along migration routes, and we found previously unknown behaviors such as repeated use of the same stopover areas by individuals across different migratory seasons.

Abstract

Abstract The demography and dynamics of migratory bird populations depend on patterns of movement and habitat quality across the annual cycle. We leveraged archival GPS‐tagging data, climate data, remote‐sensed vegetation data, and bird‐banding data to better understand the dynamics of black‐headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) populations in two breeding regions, the coast and Central Valley of California (Coastal California) and the Sierra Nevada mountain range (Sierra Nevada), over 28 years (1992–2019). Drought conditions across the annual cycle and rainfall timing on the molting grounds influenced seasonal habitat characteristics, including vegetation greenness and phenology (maturity dates). We developed a novel integrated population model with population state informed by adult capture data, recruitment rates informed by age‐specific capture data and climate covariates, and survival rates informed by adult capture–mark–recapture data and climate covariates. Population size was relatively variable among years for Coastal California, where numbers of recruits and survivors were positively correlated, and years of population increase were largely driven by recruitment. In the Sierra Nevada, population size was more consistent and showed stronger evidence of population regulation (numbers of recruits and survivors negatively correlated). Neither region showed evidence of long‐term population trend. We found only weak support for most climate–demographic rate relationships. However, recruitment rates for the Coastal California region were higher when rainfall was relatively early on the molting grounds and when wintering grounds were relatively cool and wet. We suggest that our approach of integrating movement, climate, and demographic data within a novel modeling framework can provide a useful method for better understanding the dynamics of broadly distributed migratory species.

3. The Associations Among Self-Compassion, Self-Esteem, Self-Criticism, and Concern Over Mistakes in Response to Biomechanical Feedback in Athletes

Abstract

Athletes regularly face the possibility of failing to meet expectations in training and competition, and it is essential that they are equipped with strategies to facilitate coping after receiving performance feedback. Self-compassion is a potential resource to help athletes manage the various setbacks that arise in sport over and above other psychological resources. The primary purpose of this research was to explore how athletes respond to objective biomechanical feedback given after a performance. Specifically, we investigated if levels of self-compassion, self-esteem, self-criticism, and concern over mistakes were related to one another before and after a series of sprint tests interspersed with biomechanical feedback, and whether self-compassionate athletes achieved a better sprint performance after receiving and implementing biomechanical feedback. Forty-eight athletes (20 female: Mage = 19.8 years, SD = 3.1; 28 male: Mage = 23.6 years, SD = 7.8) completed online measures of self-compassion, self-esteem, self-criticism and concern over mistakes before performing four sets of 40-m sprints. Participants received personalized biomechanical feedback after each sprint that compared their performance to gold standard results. Following all sprints, they then completed measures of self-criticism, and reported emotions, thoughts, and reactions. Self-compassion was positively correlated with self-esteem (r = 0.57, p < 0.01) and negatively related to both self-criticism (r = −0.52, p < 0.01) and concern over mistakes (r = −0.69, p < 0.01). We also found that athletes with higher levels of self-compassion prior to sprint performance experienced less self-critical thoughts following biomechanical feedback and subsequent sprint trials (r = −0.38, p < 0.01). Although the results of this study provide some support for the effectiveness of self-compassion in promoting healthy emotions, thoughts, and reactions in response to sprint performance-based biomechanical feedback, a moderated regression analysis between the first and fourth sprint time variables revealed that self-compassion was not a moderator for change in sprint performance (R2 = 0.64, ΔR2 = 0.10, p > 0.05). These findings suggest that there are likely longer-term benefits of athletes using self-compassion to cope with biomechanical feedback, but that any benefits might be limited in a short series of sprint trials.

8. [The impact of restaging transurethral resection on recurrence and progression free survival in patients with T1 high grade bladder cancer]

Abstract

Restaging transurethral resection (re-TUR) of high grade T1 bladder cancer (HGT1-BC) is recommended but the impact in terms of recurrence-free survival (RFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) is discussed. The objective of this study was to evaluate our practice of re-TUR for these tumors and its impact on overall survival (OS), RFS and PFS.A retrospective observational study was conducted between 2010 and 2020. The inclusion criteria was the presence of newly diagnosed HGT1-BC. Patients with incomplete resection, suspicion of infiltrating tumor, upper tract urothelial cancer, or metastatic disease were ineligible. Two groups were defined : Group 1 with re-TUR and Group 2 without re-TUR. RFS and PFS were evaluated.A total of 78 patients were included, including 50 (64,1%) in group 1. There were no significant differences between the two groups. The mean time to re-TUR was 8 weeks and 60% residual tumor was found. Initial under-staging was found in 12% of cases. RFS and PFS were significantly better in Group 1 (P=0.0019; P=0,02). No significant were found between the groups in OS and specific survival (SS).Performing a re-TUR for high grade T1 bladder tumors allows detection of residual tumor and decreases the risk of under-evaluation. It is associated with a significant improvement in RFS and PFS with no impact on OS and SS.

Abstract

Context: Altered neural signaling is known to have a direct impact on psychological wellness. Therefore, disruptions in neural signaling after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction may influence psychological dysfunction, in some cases manifesting as learned helplessness. Helplessness is a psychological paradigm that presents as altered neuromuscular control, reduced motivation, and psychological deficits. Objectives: The authors sought to evaluate the relationship between helplessness, neural activity, and quadriceps function at different time points after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Evidence Acquisition: Twenty-nine individuals with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were categorized into early group (2 y, age: 22 [23] y; height: 1.67 [0.07] m; mass: 65.66 [11.33] kg). Quadriceps function (activation and strength), spinal-reflexive and corticospinal excitability (active motor thresholds and motor evoked potentials), and helplessness were obtained. A principal component analysis was performed by group (early and late) to identify which factors of helplessness were most associated with neural activity and quadriceps function. Pearson product moment correlation analyses were performed by group to determine associations between individual components and main outcomes. Evidence Synthesis: In the early group, cognitive readiness was associated with quadriceps strength of the injured limb (r2 = .513, P = .004), and self-awareness/management was associated with motor threshold of the injured limb (r2 = .238, P = .05). In the late group, intrinsic helplessness was associated with motor output of injured limb (r2 = .653, P = .01). Conclusion: Helplessness is made up of several attributional constructs, which are altered at different phases of recovery. Helplessness constructs interact differently with neural activity and quadriceps function across time. These findings are preliminary and do not establish a causal link between neural alterations and learned helplessness. Future studies should serially evaluate both changes in neural activity and learned helplessness attributes throughout recovery.

Abstract

Helping athletes cope effectively with injury is likely of great interest to many sport stakeholders. Mental toughness is one psychological factor positively associated with resilience and sport performance, though stubborn persistence through injury might not always be conducive to adaptive athlete outcomes. Self-compassion—a balanced, nonjudgmental approach in relating to oneself when experiencing suffering—might help circumvent these pitfalls and complement injury recovery. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between mental toughness and self-compassion in a sport injury context. This study consisted of 2 phases—phase I quantitatively assessed the relationships between mental toughness, self-compassion, and other psychological constructs, while phase II used qualitative interviews to corroborate and inform these findings. In phase I, competitive athletes who were injured at the time of data collection (n = 81) completed mental toughness, self-compassion, coping resources, self-esteem, and self-criticism questionnaires. Abstract

We compared the vulnerability of a Nearctic-Neotropical migrant (Swainson’s Thrush, Catharus ustulatus) for three geographically-defined breeding populations in California by linking breeding and wintering regions, estimating migration distances, and quantifying relative forest loss. Using data from light-level geolocator and GPS tags, we found that breeding birds from the relatively robust coastal population in the San Francisco Bay area wintered predominantly in western Mexico (n = 18), whereas the far rarer breeding birds from two inland populations that occur near one another in the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades mountain ranges migrated to farther wintering destinations, with birds from the Lassen region (n = 5) predominantly going to Central America and birds from the Tahoe region (n = 7) predominantly to South America. Landscape-level relative forest loss was greater in the breeding and wintering regions of the two Cascade-Sierra populations than those of coastal birds. Longer migration distances and greater exposure to recent forest loss suggest greater current vulnerability of Cascade-Sierra birds. Our results demonstrate that for some species, quantifying migration distances and destinations across relatively small distances among breeding populations (in this case, 140–250 km apart) can identify dramatically different vulnerabilities that need to be considered in conservation planning.

Abstract

Recent p(T)-integrated cross-section measurements of the ground-state charm mesons and baryons, D-0, D+, D-s(+), Lambda(+)(c), and Xi(0)(c) are used to evaluate the charm fragmentation fractions and production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5), in pp collisions at root s = 5.02 TeV at the LHC. Abstract

Understanding the production mechanism of light (anti)nuclei is one of the key challenges of nuclear physics and has important consequences for astrophysics, since it provides an input for indirect dark-matter searches in space. In this paper, the latest results about the production of light (anti)nuclei in pp collisions at root s = 13TeV are presented, focusing on the comparison with the predictions of coalescence and thermal models. For the first time, the coalescence parameters B-2 for deuterons and B-3 for helions are compared with parameter-free theoretical predictions that are directly constrained by the femtoscopic measurement of the source radius in the same event class. A fair description of the data with a Gaussian wave function is observed for both deuteron and helion, supporting the coalescence mechanism for the production of light (anti)nuclei in pp collisions. This method paves the way for future investigations of the internal structure of more complex nuclear clusters, including the hypertriton.

Abstract

Researchers have questioned whether grit should be conceptualized and measured as a global- (i.e., domain-general) or domain-specific construct. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is value in conceptualizing and measuring grit as a domain-specific construct. 251 intercollegiate student-athletes completed three versions of the Grit Scale (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly, 2007) to measure grit in the context of sport, school/academe, and life in general. Results of a repeated-measures MANOVA revealed that grit levels varied as a function of situational context. Participants reported significantly higher grit in sport than in school and life in general. Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the school-specific measure of grit accounted for significant amounts of incremental variance in respondents' grade point average beyond the variance explained by the global measure of grit. Results indicate that there is merit to conceptualizing and measuring grit as a domain-specific construct in different achievement domains.

Abstract

Traumatic knee injuries, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprains, have detrimental effects on long-term health as they initiate a cycle of chronic pain, physical inactivity, and disability. Alterations in strength and neural activity are factors that contribute to rehabilitation failure after ACL reconstruction (ACLR); however, psychological deficits also hinder rehabilitative success. Neural impairments observed following injury and ACLR may be associated with psychological dysfunction, a phenomenon defined as learned helplessness (LH). The proposed framework establishes the link between depressed neural activity and psychological dysfunction after ACL injury using foundational evidence from neuroscience and psychology to support the integration of LH into recovery.

Abstract

Objective The objective of this pilot study was to examine the preliminary feasibility and efficacy of in vivo exposure therapy (IVET) to decrease injury-related fear in females with history of ACLR. Design Pilot Study. Setting Sports Medicine Research Laboratory. Participants 12 female participants with history of ACLR ( ≥ 1 year post-operative) were randomized into a 5-week IVET group (n = 6) or 5-week sham physical activity (PA) monitoring group (n = 6). Main outcome measures The independent variables were Group and Time. The dependent variables were the Photographic Series of Sports Activities for ACLR (PHOSA-ACLR) and the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia-11 (TSK-11) scores. A Group x Time repeated measures two-way analysis of variance was completed for the PHOSA-ACLR and the TSK-11. Partial η2 effect sizes were used to examine clinically meaningful differences. Results High retention and adherence rates were observed in the intervention group. The PHOSA-ACLR exhibited a significant main effect for Time (F1,10 = 9.92, p = 0.01, partial η2 = 0.50), but not for Group. No statistically significant or clinically meaningful differences were observed for the TSK-11. Conclusion Both groups exhibited decreased injury-related fear for specific functional tasks. Future research should further examine the efficacy of IVET and PA monitoring to decrease injury-related fear in patients after ACLR.

Abstract

Many high-profile athletes have engaged in athlete activism and continued to remain successful both in sport and activism. Although several barriers have been documented preventing athletes from engaging in activism (e.g., public criticism, status and job loss, withdrawal of funding, anticipated distress; Cunningham & Regan, 2012), activism itself has also been connected to several positive outcomes (e.g., improved confidence, self-concept, belief in change, agency, life meaning; Klar & Kasser, 2009; Rabkin, McElhiney, Harrington, & Horn, 2018). Indeed, both sport and activism provide opportunities for athlete activists to develop resilience. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between athletic identity (AI), activist identity and commitment (AIC), stress control mindset, and mental toughness. NCAA student-athletes (N = 204) reported low AIC overall. Regression models did not suggest that AI and AIC predict SCM or MT as expected, but correlations did provide evidence that SCM and MT are positively related. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.

Abstract

The transverse momentum (p(T)) differential cross section of the charm-strange baryon Xi(0)(c) is measured at midrapidity (vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5) via its semileptonic decay into e(+)Xi(-)nu(e) in pp collisions at root s = 5.02TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ratio of the p(T)-differential Xi(0)(c)-baryon and D-0-meson production cross sections is also reported. The measurements are compared with simulations with different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with predictions from a statistical hadronisation model (SHM) with a largely augmented set of charm-baryon states beyond the current lists of the Particle Data Group, and with models including hadronisation via quark coalescence. The pT-integrated cross section of prompt Xi(0)(c)-baryon production at midrapidity is also reported, which is used to calculate the baryon-to-meson ratio Xi(0)(c)/D-0 = 0.20 +/- 0.04 (stat.)(-0.07)(+0.08) (syst.). These results provide an additional indication of a modification of the charm fragmentation from e(+) e(-) and e-p collisions to pp collisions.

Abstract

Measurements of event-by-event fluctuations of charged-particle multiplicities in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV using the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < p(T) < 2.0 GeV/c. The amplitude of the fluctuations is expressed in terms of the variance normalized by the mean of themultiplicity distribution. The. and p(T) dependences of the fluctuations and their evolution with respect to collision centrality are investigated. The multiplicity fluctuations tend to decrease from peripheral to central collisions. The results are compared to those obtained from HIJING and AMPT Monte Carlo event generators as well as to experimental data at lower collision energies. Additionally, the measured multiplicity fluctuations are discussed in the context of the isothermal compressibility of the high-density strongly-interacting system formed in central Pb-Pb collisions.

22. [Neurogenic bladder and continent cystostomy: Results of a monocentric cohort in a French university hospital]

Abstract

The main objective was to evaluate the complications of continuous urinary shunts in a French university hospital according to surgical technique and functional results especially on continence. The secondary objective was to evaluate the management of complications.A retrospective study was conducted between January 2008 and August 2017. Patients who had a continent cystostomy with or without bladder augmentation were included. Diversions for non-neurological causes were excluded. Cystostomy was performed using the appendix or a Monti's artifice. Data collected included complications and their management, functionality of the diversion and of the bladder reservoir, cystostomy continence, and urethral continence.Nineteen patients were included. The median follow-up time was 46 months. The majority of early postoperative complications were classified as grade II Clavien-Dindo. No postoperative deaths occurred. Late complications most frequently involved cystostomy duct stenosis (n=5), cystostomy incontinence (n=5), and urethral incontinence (n=8). Thirteen patients had revision surgery for late complications. Late complications on continence evolved favorably after revision surgery or medical treatment in all, but one case.Our results are consistent with the literature. Complications and the re-interventions are frequent and should lead to a multidisciplinary information and evaluation of the patient in preoperative care.3.

Abstract

Context Fear has been cited as the primary barrier to return to sport (RTS) by athletes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Understanding the neural factors that contribute to fear after ACLR may help us to identify interventions for this population. Objective To characterize the underlying neural substrate of injury-related fear in patients after ACLR versus healthy matched control individuals during a picture imagination task (PIT) consisting of sport-specific images and images of activities of daily living (ADL). Design Case-control study. Setting Research laboratory. Patients or Other Participants A total of 24 right-hand–dominant participants (12 with left-sided ACLR and 12 control individuals) were enrolled. Participants underwent full-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging. Main Outcome Measure(s) Functional data were acquired using blood oxygen level–dependent (BOLD) echoplanar imaging. Independent t tests were conducted to identify between-groups differences in BOLD signal changes during all images of the PIT. Paired t tests were computed to examine differences in BOLD signal change between sport-specific and ADL images in the ACLR group. Results Increased activation in the inferior parietal lobule and the mediodorsal thalamus was observed during PIT in the ACLR group. An inability to suppress the default mode network in the ACLR group was noted. The ACLR group exhibited increased activation in the cerebellum and inferior occipital regions during the sport-specific images versus the ADL images, but no other regions of interest demonstrated differences. Conclusion After ACLR, patients may be more predisposed to fear, anxiety, and pain during sport-specific activities and ADLs. Psychosocial interventions may be warranted after ACLR to reduce injury-related fear and mitigate potentially maladaptive neuroplasticity.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: As emotional and social competency training proliferates within a work readiness context, concerns remain regarding their efficacy. Data on these programs tends to be scarce and outcome objectives are often poorly defined. OBJECTIVE: Authors developed and tested a work readiness emotional and social competency program specifically designed for at-risk young adults, tailored with best practices in mind. METHOD: 84 clients of a community organization that provides employment support to young adults with disabilities (48 men and 36 women) with a mean age of 28.17 years (SD = 11.64) completed measures of emotional intelligence and alexithymia on either side of the 4-week intervention. RESULTS: Men’s interpersonal scores and women’s adaptability scores showed significant improvement across the intervention. In addition, women’s scores in both identifying and describing feelings improved significantly, as did men’s scores in describing feelings. CONCLUSIONS: Within the context of work readiness, participants in an intervention to improve emotional and social competencies can see key improvements to competencies linked to occupational attainment.

Abstract

This work presents the preliminary results of a study that proposes the development of capacitors with similar or better performance in terms of reliability and partial discharges (PD) level than their oil-impregnated counterparts. It presents the comparison of several configurations and technologies of layered dielectric films capacitors impregnated with a commercial polymeric resin, with the aim to improve the properties of its inner dielectric wall. To find a suitable match between the different dielectric film arrangements and technologies with the polymeric resin used, tests on different sample configurations were carried out. These tests also covered the impact of the surface treatment prior to impregnation and the final enhancement of dielectric properties of the system due to the encapsulating polymeric resin. To ensure a reliable fabrication process, the Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) technique was used. The results show that rough polypropylene (PPR) films with prior surface treatment and set in polymeric resin may be the best candidate to compete with current technologies to carry out oil-free capacitors.

Abstract

The aim of the Cancerology Committee of the French Association of urology (CCAFU) is to propose an update of the guidelines in the management of hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer.A systematic review (Medline) of the literature from 2018 to 2020 was conducted by the CCAFU Findings. Several patterns can be defined at this stage depending on prognostic, metastatic volume, and whether metastases are synchronous or metachronous. Androgenic deprivation therapy (ADT) remains the mainstay of treatment at the metastatic stage. Docetaxel in combination with ADT improves overall survival in synchronous metastatic prostate cancer. In this situation, the combination of ADT with abiraterone is also a standard of care regardless of tumor volume. Recent data have led to the recommendation that ADT should be used in conjunction with a new generation hormone therapy (Apalutamide or Enzalutamide) in metastatic synchronous or metachronous patients, regardless of tumour volume. Local treatment of prostate cancer with radiotherapy improves survival in synchronous oligometastatic patients. Metastases-directed therapy is being evaluated.This update of the French recommendations should help improve the management of patients with prostate cancer.

27. Establishing the breeding provenance of a temperate-wintering North American passerine, the Golden-crowned Sparrow, using light-level geolocation.

Abstract

The migratory biology and connectivity of passerines remains poorly known, even for those that move primarily within the temperate zone. We used light-level geolocators to describe the migratory geography of a North American temperate migrant passerine. From February to March of 2010, we attached geolocator tags to 33 Golden-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia atricapilla) wintering on the central coast of California, USA, and recovered four tags the following winter (October to December 2010). We used a bayesian state-space model to estimate the most likely breeding locations. All four birds spent the breeding season on the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. These locations spanned approximately 1200 kilometers, and none of the individuals bred in the same location. Speed of migration was nearly twice as fast during spring than fall. The return rate of birds tagged the previous season (33%) was similar to that of control birds (39%), but comparing return rates was complicated because 7 of 11 returning birds had lost their tags. For birds that we recaptured before spring migration, we found no significant difference in mass change between tagged and control birds. Our results provide insight into the previously-unknown breeding provenance of a wintering population of Golden-crowned Sparrows and provide more evidence of the contributions that light-level geolocation can make to our understanding of the migratory geography of small passerines.

Leapfrog migration systems, whereby more-northern breeding populations overwinter the farthest south, provide unique opportunities to further our understanding of how environmental variation shapes migratory behavior and the seasonal distributions of birds. Leapfrog migration in a western Fox Sparrow subspecies complex (Passerella iliaca unalaschcensis, Sooty Fox Sparrow) was described as early as 1920, and has served as an exemplar of leapfrog systems in subsequent theoretical work. However, migration behavior within P. i. unalaschcensis has never been studied directly, nor has the proposed leapfrog pattern been confirmed through the tracking of individuals. Abstract

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy with fiducial markers and prostate brachytherapy allow the delivery of dose escalation for localized prostate cancer with very low rates of long-term toxicity and sequelae. Nowadays, modern radiotherapy techniques make it possible to shorten treatment time with hypofractionation, to better protect surrounding healthy tissues and to escalate the dose even further. Advances in radiotherapy are closely linked to advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or PET imaging. Functional imaging makes it possible to deliver personalised pelvic nodal radiotherapy, targeting the nodal areas at higher risk of microscopic involvement. In patients with an index lesion at baseline or at failure, MR-based focal therapy or focal dose escalation with brachytherapy or stereotactic body radiation therapy is also currently investigated. MR-based adaptive radiotherapy, which makes it possible to track prostate shifts during radiation delivery, is another step forward in the integration of MR imaging in radiation delivery.

Abstract

Most experiments using EEG recordings take place in highly isolated and restricted environments, limiting their applicability to real-life scenarios. New technologies for mobile EEG are changing this by allowing EEG recording to take place outside of the laboratory. However, before results from experiments performed outside the laboratory can be fully understood, the effects of ecological stimuli on brain activity during cognitive tasks must be examined. In this experiment, participants performed an auditory oddball task while also listening to concurrent background noises of silence, white noise, and outdoor ecological sounds, as well as a condition in which the tones themselves were at a low volume. We found a significantly increased N1 and decreased P2 when participants performed the task with outdoor sounds and white noise in the background, with the largest differences in the outdoor sound condition. This modulation in the N1 and P2 replicates what we have previously found outside while people rode bicycles. No behavioral differences were found in response to the target tones. We interpret these modulations in early ERPs as indicative of sensory filtering of background sounds and that ecologically valid sounds require more filtering than simple synthetic sounds. Our results reveal that much of what we understand about the brain will need to be updated as cognitive neuroscience research begins to step outside of the lab.

Abstract

The goal of our study was to describe general practitioner's (GP) practice regarding prostate cancer screening, the prescribing of prostate MRI and to investigate the factors associated with the prescribing of prostate MRI (pMRI).A survey was addressed to 1127 GP of the "Bourgogne-Franche Comté" region before the new CCAFU's guidelines publication.93 practitioners responded, giving a response rate of 8.3%. Eighty GP (86%) responded performing prostate cancer screening. The main means used were the assaying of PSA alone (23 practitioners, 28.8%) or the combination of PSA dosage and digital rectal examination (36 practitioners: 45%). It should be noted that 31 practitioners (39%) did not perform digital rectal examination as part of prostate cancer screening. Thirty two physicians prescribed pMRIs (34.5%.) before any urological consultation. The main indications were several abnormal PSA assays (27 GP, 84.4%) and/or suspicious rectal examination (15 GP, 46.9%). The main reason of this prescription was the gain of time for patient or urologist. Screening was carried out independently of the demographic characteristics of the physicians interviewed. Abstract

Objective Presentation of data collected on urology claims from the register of a French insurance company. Material and method Compensation claims involving urologists covering the period 2009-2018 were identified and analyzed. Results A total of 37 files were found. Oncological and functional surgical interventions accounts for 78% of repair claims. Postoperative complications represent 76% of the cases. The most represented acts are total prostatectomy (5) and promonto-fixation (4). The average time of complaint is 28.6 months [1-144 months], the average duration of a procedure (opening-closing) is 32.8 months [12-72 months]. The Conciliation and Compensation Commissions (CCC) and the High Court Courts (HCC) were solicited respectively in 51% and 33% of the proceedings. An amicable agreement is found in 16% of cases. There was no criminal or disciplinary proceedings. The average cost of a closed urology file is 7836 € [0-31,120 €]. In total, 64.8% of the expertises confirm practices in the respect of the rules of the art. Conclusion This series presents the first forensic analysis of a portfolio of urologists on a period of 9 years in French urology. There is a rate of responsibility retained against the practitioner in only 27% of cases. The low rate of faulty files, the absence of a conviction for breach of the duty to provide information and in connection with antibiotic prophylaxis seem to confirm that the practice of urology in France is of good quality, a further study on a longer period of time and on a larger cohort of urologists would allow a finer medico-legal approach. Abstract

Knowledge of migratory connectivity is critical to understanding the consequences of habitat loss and climate change on migratory species. We used light-level geolocators to determine breeding locations and migratory routes of wintering Golden-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia atricapilla) in two regions of California, USA. Eight out of 9 birds tagged at coastal-wintering sites in Marin County went to breeding sites along the Gulf Coast of Alaska, while 7 out of 8 inland-wintering birds in Placer County migrated to interior sites in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia, Canada. Our estimate of the strength of migratory connectivity was relatively high (rm = 0.66). Coastal-wintering birds followed a coastal migration route while inland-wintering birds migrated inland. Coastalwintering birds migrated significantly farther than inland birds (3,624 km versus 2,442 km). Coastal birds traveled at a greater rate during spring migration (179 km/d) than did inland birds (118 km/d), but there was no statistical difference in the rate of fall migration (167 km/d and 111 km/d, respectively). Dates of arrival and departure, and duration of spring and fall migration, did not differ between groups, nor did return rates. Rates of return also did not differ between tagged and control birds. The distinct migration routes and breeding areas suggests that there may be more structuring in the migratory geography of the Golden-crowned Sparrow than in a simple panmictic population.

Abstract

La braquiterapia por cancer de prostata consiste en depositar el elemento radiactivo en la prostata de forma directa, sin que la radiacion tenga que atravesar los tejidos circundantes. La modalidad que mas se usa es la braquiterapia con tasa de dosis baja por implantes definitivos de yodo-125 y dosimetria en tiempo real. Las indicaciones han sido establecidas por la American Brachytherapy Society (ABS). Son pacientes con cancer de prostata del grupo de bajo riesgo (T1c-T2a; Gleason: 3 + 3; antigeno prostatico especifico [PSA] inferior o igual a 10) segun la clasificacion de D’Amico. Despues de un seguimiento prolongado, las indicaciones se han ampliado a partir de criterios biopsicos (numero de biopsias positivas, longitud tumoral por biopsia y presencia o ausencia de invasion perinerviosa) y de los resultados de la resonancia magnetica (RM) (preferentemente multiparametrica). Asi, algunos pacientes del grupo de riesgo intermedio de D’Amico (T2b; Gleason: 7; PSA: 10-20) con baja carga tumoral y agresividad moderada pueden ser tratados mediante braquiterapia sola. Al parecer, es prudente no acumular los factores de riesgo (Gleason: 7 y PSA > 10 ng/ml). Una seleccion rigurosa de los pacientes produce resultados comparables a los de la cirugia o la radioterapia. Una IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) superior a 12, un volumen prostatico superior a 60 ml y una reseccion endoscopica de la prostata con una celda bien visible son las contraindicaciones principales. La braquiterapia prostatica es la radioterapia estereotaxica por excelencia, y en ella se consideran los movimientos de la prostata y del paciente. Permite liberar en la prostata el nivel de dosis mas elevado, en comparacion con una radioterapia externa sola. Este tratamiento necesita equipos capacitados y un control de calidad elevado de los protocolos de tratamiento.

Abstract

La prostatectomie totale et la nephrectomie partielle robot-assistees sont les interventions les plus pratiquees en onco-urologie. En dix ans, la robotique s’est imposee pour la prostatectomie dans les centres equipes, du fait de l’amelioration technique apportee a la realisation de cette intervention. Les resultats carcinologiques et fonctionnels sont comparables ou superieurs a ceux de la prostatectomie laparoscopique ou par voie ouverte. L’assistance robotique est particulierement utile en cas de patient obese et de necessite de dissection precise (conservation des nerfs caverneux, anastomose vesico-uretrale). Les resultats de la nephrectomie partielle sont egalement en faveur de l’assistance robotique si l’on prend en compte les parametres perioperatoires, les resultats fonctionnels et carcinologiques.

Resume Introduction L’informatisation du circuit clinique du medicament doit permettre sa securisation. Pourtant, ce procede genere des erreurs qui n’existaient pas avec le circuit papier. Objectifs Notre etude avait pour objectifs de detecter les non-conformites entre les prescriptions informatisees et les medicaments reellement administres aux patients, d’en caracteriser les causes et d’en evaluer l’impact clinique potentiel sur le patient. Methode et resultats Ce travail montre que 65 % des medicaments administres different des medicaments prescrits. Les principales non-conformites relevees sont liees a des erreurs de prescription (86 %). Les IDE detectent ces erreurs (85 %) mais ne tracent pas (3 %) informatiquement leur decision. Le plus souvent, l’impact clinique potentiel sur le patient est nul (75 %). Quelques erreurs ont des impacts cliniques tres significatifs (4 %) ou vitaux (6 %) et necessitent la mise en place rapide de mesures d’amelioration.

Abstract

Effective conservation of short-distance migrants requires an understanding of intraspecific variation in migratory patterns across small spatial scales. Until the advent of ultra-light geolocation devices, our knowledge of the migratory connectivity of songbirds was limited. For the Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus), subspecies delineations and connectivity patterns have been unclear in the portion of their breeding range in western North America from southeastern Alaska to northwestern Washington, where individuals wintering in the San Francisco Bay Area of California purportedly breed. To determine breeding locations and migratory timing of the Bay Area’s wintering Hermit Thrushes, we deployed geolocators at sites to the north and south of the San Francisco Bay. We compared results from these two regions to one another and to connectivity patterns suggested by subspecies definitions. We collected morphometrics to identify regional differences. Hermit Thrushes that wintered in the North Bay had a wider and more southerly breeding distribution from the British Columbia coast to northwestern Washington, whereas South Bay thrushes migrated to southeastern Alaska and the British Columbia coast. In general, North Bay thrushes departed wintering grounds and arrived on breeding grounds earlier than South Bay thrushes, but we cannot eliminate sex as a factor in these differences. Regional morphology differed only in bill length. Intraspecific isolation in glacial refugia during the Late Pleistocene may explain these fine-scale geographic variations in migration patterns and morphology.

Abstract

Resume Introduction L’ambulatoire et la robotique sont des applications modernes de la chirurgie. Nous les reunissons dans l’etude d’un cas pour montrer la faisabilite de la prostatectomie radicale robotique en ambulatoire. Methode Nous rapportons ici le cas clinique d’une premiere prostatectomie robotique realisee en ambulatoire chez un patient de 57 ans, porteur d’un cancer localise de prostate. Le patient volontaire a ete selectionne pour son excellent etat general et des facteurs environnementaux favorables. La chirurgie a ete realisee par voie transperitoneale avec preservation des bandelettes neurovasculaires. La sedation et l’analgesie peroperatoires ont ete realisees au propofol en objectif de concentration cible. Les criteres d’evaluation du postoperatoire etaient l’echelle EVA pour la douleur, les pertes sanguines, le score de Chung et l’enquete de satisfaction du patient. Resultats Aucun incident per- ou postoperatoire n’a ete note. Les pertes sanguines ont ete mineures (75 mL). Le patient a sejourne moins de 12 heures dans l’unite de soins grâce a une rehabilitation adaptee avec score de Chung de 10 avant son retour a domicile. Il n’y a pas eu de readmission. Les resultats sur le plan fonctionnel ; le retour du transit a ete constate a j1, la reprise du travail a j2, une continence urinaire normale a j8, des erections efficaces a j9. Sur le plan carcinologique, l’exerese a ete complete et le PSA postoperatoire Conclusion La prostatectomie robotique ambulatoire est donc realisable chez un patient volontaire et selectionne sans compromettre la bonne qualite des suites operatoires urologiques.

Abstract

Context Athletic trainers (ATs) commonly use psychological skills during sport rehabilitation. However, little is known about their ability to accurately implement these skills. Objective To assess ATs' skills in identifying psychological symptoms, selecting appropriate strategies, and making referral decisions for athletes experiencing various degrees of psychological distress. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Participants were recruited using the National Athletic Trainers' Association professional member database. Patients or Other Participants Of the 2998 ATs who were selected randomly, 494 (16.5%) partially completed the questionnaire and 326 (10.9%) completed the entire survey (mean age = 34.7 ± 10.8 years, mean years of experience = 11.3 ± 9.9). Main Outcome Measure(s) Using the Web-based questionnaire created for this study, we collected ATs' demographic information and assessed their perceptions about responsibilities as ATs, psychosocial competencies, training in sport psychology, and referral behaviors. Additionally, respondents were asked to identify symptoms, match psychological strategies (eg, goal setting, imagery, progressive muscle relaxation), and make referral decisions for athletes in 3 case vignettes. Results The ATs demonstrated high accuracy in identifying symptoms and making referral decisions but struggled in selecting appropriate psychosocial strategies for athletes. Stepwise regression analyses revealed that ATs who had had specific coursework in sport psychology were able to more accurately identify symptoms (t = 3.01, P < .01), and those ATs with more experience reported lower accuracy scores for their intended course of action (t = −2.25, P < .05). Conclusions Our analogue research design provided new insights into ATs' knowledge and use of sport psychology in practice. The results highlighted the importance of coursework focusing on applied areas of sport psychology in the training of ATs.

Abstract

This study explored the knowledge and perceptions of elite coacting sport coaches as applied to team cohesion. Six experienced university cross-country running coaches who achieved high levels of success and recognition were purposefully chosen and interviewed for this study. Results demonstrated that these coaches valued cohesion and felt it played an integral role in developing team success and satisfaction, despite facing barriers such as intrateam competition and rivalry. Purposeful recruiting, choosing effective team leaders, setting and monitoring team goals, and encouraging social events were some strategies utilized to enhance cohesion and establish positive relationships among teammates. These findings provide a greater understanding of the knowledge of elite coacting coaches and cohesion.

Abstract

Most experiments using EEG recordings take place in highly isolated and restricted environments, limiting their applicability to real-life scenarios. New technologies for mobile EEG are changing this by allowing EEG recording to take place outside of the laboratory. However, before results from experiments performed outside the laboratory can be fully understood, the effects of ecological stimuli on brain activity during cognitive tasks must be examined. In this experiment, participants performed an auditory oddball task while also listening to concurrent background noises of silence, white noise and outdoor ecological sounds, as well as a condition in which the tones themselves were at a low volume. We found a significantly increased N1 and decreased P2 when participants performed the task with outdoor sounds and white noise in the background, with the largest differences in the outdoor sound condition. This modulation in the N1 and P2 replicates what we have previously found outside while people ride bicycles (Scanlon et al., 2017b). No behavioural differences were found in response to the target tones. We interpret these modulations in early ERPs as indicative of sensory filtering of background sounds, and that ecologically valid sounds require more filtering than synthetic sounds. Our results reveal that much of what we understand about the brain will need to be updated as we step outside the lab.

Abstract

Objectives Substantial changes in neural function are historically present after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), and are not rectified with traditional rehabilitation. Cross-exercise is a potential means to enhance neural excitability and improve recovery after ACLR. Hence our purpose, was to detail changes in brain activation, neural excitability and patient-reported outcomes in a cohort that completed an 8-week quadriceps-focused eccentric cross-exercise training program immediately following ACLR. Design Case series. Setting University. Particpants Five patients participated in an 8-week (24-session) eccentric cross-exercise intervention after ACLR. Main outcome measures Brain activation, neural activity and patient-reported outcomes were evaluated within 2 weeks post-ACLR and again at 10-weeks post-ACLR after the intervention. Each cross-exercise session consisted of 4 sets of 10 isokinetic eccentric contractions at 60 deg/sec with the noninvolved limb. Results Following the intervention, patients demonstrated a facilitated spinal reflexive and muscle activity response from the motor cortex during a time when these measures are known to be depressed. Patients also demonstrated a reduce dependence on frontal cortex activity to generate quadriceps contractions. Further patients reported significant reductions in pain and symptoms and greater knee function. Conclusions Eccentric cross-exercise after ACLR helps to facilitate positive adaptations in neural function and patient reported outcomes.

Clarifying these interactions is of clinical importance because improving physical and psychological function is thought to optimize outcomes after ACLR.Objective: To examine the relationships among neuromuscular quadriceps function, pain, self-reported knee function, readiness to return to activity, and emotional response to injury both before and after ACLR.Design: Descriptive laboratory study.Patients or Other Participants: Twenty patients (11 females and 9 males; age = 20.9 ± 4.4 years, height = 172.4 ± 7.5 cm, weight = 76.2 ± 11.8 kg) who were scheduled to undergo unilateral ACLR.Main Outcome Measure(s): Quadriceps strength, voluntary activation, and pain were measured at presurgery and return to activity, quantified using maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs), central activation ratio, and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score pain subscale, respectively. Self-reported knee function, readiness to return to activity, and emotional responses to injury were evaluated at return to activity using the International Knee Documentation Committee questionnaire (IKDC), ACL Return to Sport After Injury scale (ACL-RSI), and Psychological Response to Sport Injury Inventory (PRSII), respectively. Pearson product moment correlations and linear regressions were performed using raw values and percentage change scores.Results: Presurgical levels of pain significantly predicted 31% of the variance in the ACL-RSI and 29% in the PRSII scores at return to activity. The MVIC and pain collected at return to activity significantly predicted 74% of the variance in the IKDC, whereas only MVIC significantly predicted 36% of the variance in the ACL-RSI and 39% in the PRSII scores. Greater increases in MVIC from presurgery to return to activity significantly predicted 49% of the variance in the ACL-RSI and 59% of the variance in the IKDC scores.Conclusion: Decreased quadriceps strength and higher levels of pain were associated with psychological responses in patients with ACLR. A comprehensive approach using traditional rehabilitation that includes attention to psychological barriers may be an effective strategy to improve outcomes in ACLR patients.

Abstract

To evaluate the effects of climate change on landbirds in western North America, we reviewed the published literature on changes in avian phenology, geographic distribution, morphology, physiology, and population size that have been linked to climate change in the region. Despite a large literature on the projected effects of climate change, we found surprisingly few published papers that evaluated effects already observed on western North American landbirds. The topic that has received the most attention is the phenology of migration and reproduction. However, researchers have demonstrated consistent patterns of phenological change in fewer than 10 of the region’s species. Similarly, shifts in the elevational distribution of birds have not been consistent with the expectation that climate change will cause species to shift upward in elevation. Demonstrable effects of climate change, or in some cases lack thereof, will improve future projections of its effects and efforts toward conservation. Some data from which changes can be evaluated are already available. Our review demonstrates that there is still a very real need to understand how climate change is already affecting landbirds in western North America.

Abstract

The management of localized prostate cancer has been marked over these last years by the importance of Active Surveillance for low risk forms. Indeed, the long follow-up and the quality of the results are now sufficient to offer this option even in relatively young people. However, the question is still under investigation concerning intermediate risk of prostate cancer. Patients' selection and follow-up management are of very high importance. Another major evolution is the robotic assistance for radical prostatectomy. Even if the level of evidence is still low, the global utilization all over the world of robotic assistance is a major fact of these last years mostly explained by the difficulty to correctly perform manual laparoscopic surgical procedure. Lastly, the focal therapy of prostate cancer is a new concept. The development of this approach is authorized by the improvement of the quality of prostate MRI and the accuracy of prostate biopsy. Presently, the focal treatment has to be performed in clinical trials or maybe with the help of national database validated by all the actors concerned by the treatment of prostate cancer.
