This study aimed to examine the effect of the interaction between seaweed (laver, kelp, and sea mustard) intake and lipoprotein lipase gene (LPL) rs17482735 genotypes on the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). The Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) data of Korean adults aged 40–69 years were used in this study. Information on seaweed intake was obtained from the food frequency questionnaire. To investigate the interaction between seaweed intake and LPL rs17482735 genotypes on the incidence of MetS, multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used after adjusting for confounding variables. There was no significant association in women, but men with TG and TT genotypes of rs17482753 had lower incidence of MetS (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.71–0.95, p-value = 0.01), low HDL-cholesterol levels (HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.69–0.95, p-value = 0.01), high triglyceride levels (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.70–0.99, p-value = 0.0471), and high blood pressure (HR 0.79, 95% CI 0.67–0.93, p-value = 0.004). Furthermore, the incidence of MetS was lower in men with the highest laver and total seaweed intake and TG and TT genotypes of rs17482735 (HR 0.60, 95% CI 0.43–0.84; HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.41–0.79, respectively). High seaweed intake was negatively associated with MetS, suggesting that LPL genetic variations, particularly in men, may be helpful in preventing MetS. These results demonstrate that seaweed intake considering LPL genotypes may be beneficial for preventing and treating MetS.

Background: We investigated how 100-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) results can be used to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) patients.Methods: We analyzed 1,059 pregnant women who completed the 100-g OGTT between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. We compared the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes according to OGTT patterns by latent profile analysis (LPA), numbers to meet the OGTT criteria, and area under the curve (AUC) of the OGTT graph. Adverse pregnancy outcomes were defined as a composite of preterm birth, macrosomia, large for gestational age, low APGAR score at 1 minute, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.Results: Overall, 257 participants were diagnosed with GDM, with a median age of 34 years. An LPA led to three different clusters of OGTT patterns; however, there were no significant associations between the clusters and adverse pregnancy outcomes after adjusting for confounders. Notwithstanding, the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome increased with an increase in number to meet the OGTT criteria (P for trend=0.011); odds ratios in a full adjustment model were 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.72 to 2.23), 2.16 (95% CI, 1.21 to 3.85), and 2.32 (95% CI, 0.66 to 8.15) in those meeting the 2, 3, and 4 criteria, respectively. The AUCs of the OGTT curves also distinguished the patients at risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes; the larger the AUC, the higher the risk (P for trend=0.007).Conclusion: The total number of abnormal values and calculated AUCs for the 100-g OGTT may facilitate tailored management of patients with GDM by predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Background Many studies on the relation between maternal health and infant health, including the effect of structured antenatal education, have been published and expanded over the years. Aim Investigate the impact of various antenatal education programmes on pregnancy outcomes to aid the development of future guidelines related to maternal and foetal health. Methods Bibliographic databases (Cochrane, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Korean Studies Information Service System) were searched up to November 2018, following the PICO criteria: population (pregnant women), intervention (antenatal education), comparison (not specified), and outcome (maternal and foetal outcome including physical or mental health components). Findings We included 23 eligible studies consisting of 14 controlled trials and 9 observational studies. The maternal physical outcomes depending on participation in antenatal education were not significantly different; however, the caesarean birth rate was lower in the antenatal education group (relative risk, RR, 0.90; 95% confidence interval, CI, 0.82–0.99), as was the use of epidural anaesthesia (RR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.74–0.96). The maternal mental health outcomes of stress and self-efficacy significantly improved in the antenatal education group, although there was no difference in anxiety and depression. The foetal outcomes of birth weight or gestational age at birth were also not different between the groups. Conclusion Antenatal education can reduce maternal stress, improve self-efficacy, lower the caesarean birth rate, and decrease the use of epidural anaesthesia; however, there is limited evidence of its effects on maternal or foetal physical outcomes. Therefore, antenatal education should be standardised to elucidate its actual mental and physical health effects.

Background: Macrosomic birth weight has been implicated as a significant risk factor for developing various adult metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and coronary heart diseases; it has also been associated with higher incidences of complicated births. This study aimed to examine the predictability of macrosomic births in hyperglycemic pregnant women using maternal clinical characteristics and serum biomarkers of aneuploidy screening performed in the first half of pregnancy. Methods: A retrospective observational study was performed on a cohort of 1,668 pregnant women who 1) had positive outcomes after undergoing 50-g oral glucose challenge test (OGCT) at two university-based hospitals and 2) underwent any one of the following maternal biomarker screening tests for fetal aneuploidy: triple test, quadruple test, and integrated test. Logistic regression-based models for predicting macrosomic births using maternal characteristics and serum biomarkers were developed and evaluated for prediction power. A nomogram, which is a graphical display of the best predictable model, was then generated. Results: The study cohort included 157 macrosomic birth cases defined as birth weight ≥3,820 g, which was equivalent to the top 10 percentile of the modeling cohort. Three primary models solely based on serum biomarkers achieved area under curves (AUCs) of 0.55-0.62. Expanded models, including maternal demographic and clinical factors, demonstrated an improved performance by 25% (AUCs, 0.69-0.73). Conclusion: Our prediction models will help to identify pregnancies with an elevated risk of macrosomic births in hyperglycemic mothers using maternal clinical factors and serum markers from routine antenatal screening tests. Prediction of macrosomic birth at mid-pregnancy may allow customized antenatal care to reduce the risk of macrosomic births.

Objective Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide and is both unpredictable and inevitable. While uterotonic drugs are routinely recommended, there is ongoing debate on the ideal intervention to control uterine bleeding. This review aims to compare the use of non-pharmacologic treatments with peripartum hysterectomy in cases of life-threatening uncontrolled obstetric hemorrhage. The review’s objective is to use a network meta-analysis to help prevent maternal deaths and rank the treatments according to success rates. Methods We searched MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and the Cochrane Library, from January 2014 until December 2018. A second search was carried out in April 2019 before the final data analysis. Network meta-analysis allows for the calculation of the effect size between treatment groups through indirect treatment comparison. Results We confirmed that balloon-assisted management is the best intervention for uncontrolled postpartum bleeding with pharmacologic treatment. This is followed by uterine artery embolization and surgical procedures, which can help avoid the need for a hysterectomy. The balloon tamponade demonstrated lower failure rate than the surgical procedure with odds ratio (OR) of 0.44 and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) 0.50-30.54. Uterine artery embolization had a lower risk for hysterectomy than the surgical procedure group (OR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.22-2.50). Conclusion For the quick treatment of postpartum bleeding, balloon tamponade is the best method for uncontrolled postpartum bleeding with pharmacologic treatment, followed by uterine artery embolization and surgical procedures.

Dyslipidemia is a common chronic disease that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Diet plays an important role in the development of dyslipidemia. As people pay increased attention to healthy eating habits, brown seaweed consumption is increasing, particularly in East Asian countries. The association between dyslipidemia and brown seaweed consumption has been previously demonstrated. We searched for keywords associated with brown seaweed and dyslipidemia in electronic databases such as PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane. Heterogeneity was estimated using the I2 statistic. The 95% confidence interval (CI) of the forest plot and heterogeneity were confirmed using meta-ANOVA and meta-regression. Funnel plots and publication bias statistical tests were used to determine publication bias. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. In this meta-analysis, we found that brown seaweed intake significantly decreased the levels of total cholesterol (mean difference (MD): −3.001; 95% CI: −5.770, −0.232) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (MD: −6.519; 95% CI: −12.884, −0.154); nevertheless, the statistically significant association of brown seaweed intake with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and triglycerides were not observed in our study (MD: 0.889; 95% CI: −0.558, 2.335 and MD: 8.515; 95% CI: −19.354, 36.383). Our study demonstrated that brown seaweed and its extracts decreased total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. The use of brown seaweeds may be a promising strategy to reduce the risk of dyslipidemia. Future studies involving a larger population are warranted to investigate the dose–response association of brown seaweed consumption with dyslipidemia.

The effects of urbanization on the health of city dwellers have spurred research on the health-promoting benefits of forest exposure, and potential health-promoting benefits of human-nature relationships. In this meta-analysis, meta-regression, and systematic review, we aimed to analyze how forest-based interventions improved overall well-being through psychological and physiological changes by examining psychological scores and biomarkers. In December 2021, systematic searches were conducted on bibliographic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane) for studies involving psychological scores and physiological indicators. Data from 17 studies with 1418 participants showed that psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue, confusion, vigor), systolic blood pressure (BP), and malondialdehyde levels significantly improved in the forest-exposed group compared to in the nonexposed group, with high heterogeneity (I2 = 66%–93%). Well-being-related psychological symptoms (friendliness, well-being, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, self-esteem) and physiological markers (diastolic BP and cortisol) exhibited better tendencies in the forest-exposed group, with high heterogeneity (I2 = 16%–91%), and meta-regression showed that moderators (age, country group, number of participants, study design, female participation rate, BMI) were significantly associated with forest-related therapeutic effects. In conclusion, forest visits have health-promoting effects that reduce the incidence of stress and lifestyle-related diseases, and are positively associated with psychological and physiological health.

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined when a female achieves menopause before the age of 40. Although many conditions are known to be causative for POF, the most common one is idiopathic. This study was undertaken to investigate the pathogenesis of POF using proteomic tools. Two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis was performed to screen for proteins differentially expressed in patients with POF. Using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we identified 11 significant proteins differentially expressed in the serum of POF patients: 5 proteins with expression increased more than two folds, 5 proteins with expression decreased more than two folds, and 1 protein expressed specifically in the serum of patients with POF. The results of the 2-DE analysis were further validated by Western blotting and ELISA analyses, which 5 reproductive system-related proteins (Ceruloplasmin, Complement C3, Fibrinogen α, Fibrinogen β, and SHBG) were selected. The different expression levels for these proteins were confirmed and demonstrated the possibility of using them as biomarkers to screen POF. These pre-clinical data provide plausible translational implications for targeting the pathogenesis of POF for each protein.

Although many people affected by COVID-19 suffer from some form of psychological distress, access to proper treatment or psychosocial interventions has been limited. This study aimed to examine the feasibility and preliminary effects of a therapeutic gardening program conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program consisted of 30 sessions and was conducted at 10 nationwide sites in Korea from June to November 2021. Mental health and well-being were assessed using the Mental Health Screening Tool for Depressive Disorders, Mental Health Screening Tool for Anxiety Disorders, Engagement in Daily Activity Scale, brief version of World Health Organization Quality of Life, and Mindful Attention Awareness Scale. Cohen’s d value was calculated for the effect size, and a multilevel analysis was used to determine the longitudinal effects of therapeutic gardening. The effect sizes for depression, anxiety, daily activities, quality of life, and mindfulness were 0.84, 0.72, 0.61, 0.64, and 0.40, respectively. Multilevel analyses showed that all five mental health variables improved significantly over time as the therapeutic gardening program progressed. Therapeutic gardening is promising and applicable as a nature-based intervention to improve the mental health of individuals experiencing psychological distress especially in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a complex disease of which the etiology is influenced by numerous genetic variations. Several POF candidate genes have been reported. However, no causal genes with high odds ratio (OR) have yet been discovered. This study included 564 females of Korean ethnicity, comprising 60 patients with POF and 182 controls in the discovery set and 105 patients with POF and 217 controls in the replication set. We conducted genome-wide association analysis to search for novel candidate genes predicted to influence POF development using Axiom Precision Medicine Research Arrays and additive model logistic regression analysis. One statistically significant single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs55941146, which encodes a missense alteration (Val > Gly) in the APBA3 gene, was identified with OR values for association with POF of 13.33 and 4.628 in the discovery and replication sets, respectively. No rs55941146 minor allele homozygotes were present in either cases or controls. The APBA3 protein binds FIH-1 that inhibits hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). HIF-1α contributes to granulosa cell proliferation, which is crucial for ovarian follicle growth, by regulating cell proliferation factors and follicle stimulating hormone-mediated autophagy. Our data demonstrate that APBA3 is a candidate novel causal gene for POF.

Postpartum depression is a serious health issue beyond the mental health problems that affect mothers after childbirth. There are no predictive tools available to screen postpartum depression that also allow early interventions. We aimed to develop predictive models for postpartum depression using machine learning (ML) approaches. We performed a retrospective cohort study using data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System 2012–2013 with 28,755 records (3339 postpartum depression and 25,416 normal cases). The imbalance between the two groups was addressed by a balanced resampling using both random down-sampling and the synthetic minority over-sampling technique. Nine different ML algorithms, including random forest (RF), stochastic gradient boosting, support vector machines (SVM), recursive partitioning and regression trees, naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor (kNN), logistic regression, and neural network, were employed with 10-fold cross-validation to evaluate the models. The overall classification accuracies of the nine models ranged from 0.650 (kNN) to 0.791 (RF). The RF method achieved the highest area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) value of 0.884, followed by SVM, which achieved the second-best performance with an AUC value of 0.864. Predictive modeling developed using ML-approaches may thus be used as a prediction (screening) tool for postpartum depression in future studies.

Background Various maternal conditions, especially in utero conditions and prenatal exposure to environments with air pollution and greenness, have been reviewed to address the enhancement and prevention of susceptibility to health risks, including low birthweight, preterm delivery, and preeclampsia. This study aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the associations between pregnancy outcomes and the characteristics of surrounding living environment, including greenness, air pollution, and civilization. Methods A secondary search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, K-eArticles, and CINAHL databases was conducted without language restrictions to identify the relevant publications from the time of inception of the databases to April 2019. Results A total of 89 studies were identified, and 10 were included in the quantitative synthesis. The greenness of the environment within 100-, 250- and 500-m buffers, after adjusting for the air quality and civilization factors, was weakly but positively associated with birthweight. The pooled regression slope was 0.00134 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.000, 0.0020). The greenness of the environment was also associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of poor pregnancy outcomes, namely, low birthweight, small for gestational age (odds ratio [OR] 0.94; 95% CI, 0.92, 0.97), and preterm delivery (OR 0.98; 95% CI, 0.97, 0.99). Conclusions The greenness of the environment had a positive effect on the pregnancy outcomes, despite poor air quality and civilization. Following urbanization, planning for greenness management, environmental medicine, and public health is important and thus should be proposed as preventive methods as way of increasing birthweight and life expectancy.

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as loss of ovarian function in women less than 40 years of age. The causes of POF are diverse and include environmental factors. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is one factor that may cause POF. The ubiquitin-proteasome system maintains intracellular balance by promoting or inhibiting protein degradation. To investigate the differential expressions of deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) genes in patients with POF, we developed two in vitro POF models by treating A2780 or OVCAR5 with DEHP. Using these models, a multiplex RT-PCR system for DUB genes was applied to identify biomarkers by comparing expression patterns and DUB mRNA levels; multiplex RT-PCR results were validated by qRT-PCR and Western blotting analyses. Observed differential expression levels of several DUB genes including USP12, COPS5, ATXN3L, USP49, and USP34 in A2780 and OVCAR5 cells at the mRNA and protein levels suggest that they should be investigated as potential biomarkers of POF.

© The Author(s) 2017. Background: Numerous studies have reported that spending time in nature is associated with the improvement of various health outcomes and well-being. This review evaluated the physical and psychological benefits of a specific type of exposure to nature, forest therapy. Method: A literature search was carried out using MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, and ProQuest databases and manual searches from inception up to December 2016. Key words: "Forest" or "Shinrin -Yoku" or "Forest bath" AND "Health" or "Wellbeing". The methodological quality of each randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was assessed according to the Cochrane risk of bias (ROB) tool. Results: Six RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Participants' ages ranged from 20 to 79 years. Sample size ranged from 18 to 99. Populations studied varied from young healthy university students to elderly people with chronic disease. Studies reported the positive impact of forest therapy on hypertension (n = 2), cardiac and pulmonary function (n = 1), immune function (n = 2), inflammation (n= 3), oxidative stress (n = 1), stress (n = 1), stress hormone (n= 1), anxiety (n= 1), depression (n = 2), and emotional response (n = 3). The quality of all studies included in this review had a high ROB. Conclusion: Forest therapy may play an important role in health promotion and disease prevention. However, the lack of high-quality studies limits the strength of results, rendering the evidence insufficient to establish clinical practice guidelines for its use. More robust RCTs are warranted.

Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. is an important medicinal plant that synthesizes an array of phenolic compounds. Its roots are used in a variety of pharmacological and cosmetic formulations, notably as hair dye. In the present study, the inoculum density (3–15 g/L) and culture period (1–7 weeks) were optimized in a 3 L bioreactor. High root biomass (14.18 g/L dry weight (DW)) was recorded with an inoculum of 7 g/L (p ≤ 0.05), which is consistent with the results for 5 and 10 g/L. However, significantly higher yield of bioactive compounds (53.87 mg/g DW total phenolics and 27.96 mg/g DW total flavonoids) with high free radical scavenging activity was obtained in root samples from 5 g/L inoculum density. A 4 week culture period was sufficient for optimum root growth and metabolite production. The optimized conditions were used for large-scale (5 and 20 L) and pilot-scale (500 L) studies. Considering that the continuous aeration of root cultures may lead to oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation also were studied. The results revealed high catalase (CAT) and guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD) activities, and low malondialdehyde (MDA) production, with increasing culture scale (20 and 500 L), which may indicate low-level oxidative damage to the cultures. An optimal yield of 4.01 kg dry root biomass with 287.12 mg/L of total phenolic productivity was achieved in a 500 L pilot-scale bioreactor. This work can pave the way for commercial production of biomass and secondary metabolites at the industrial level, and meet the rising demand for natural ingredients, especially in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

We aimed to examine the biophysical and psychological effects of two different types of forests on women with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Seventy-one middle-aged Korean women participated in a half-day healing program at either Saneum Recreational Forest (a wild forest) or Seoul Forest (a tended forest) depending on their preference. The participants’ biophysical parameters and Profile of Mood States (POMS) were measured before and after the healing program. The two groups differed significantly in acute insulin responses, pulse rate, oxidative stress markers, and stress hormone level, suggesting better homeostasis in the wild forest. The POMS suggested that the mean vigor and confusion scores significantly decreased in the wild forest. Considering the significantly more favorable acute insulin reaction and levels of oxidative stress and the trend toward positive mood state in the wild forest, we recommend that middle-aged patients with MetS participate in healing programs in wild forests.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between maternal serum estriol levels, which are routinely measured in the first trimester of pregnancy, and adverse pregnancy outcomes including gestational diabetes. We performed a retrospective chart analysis of women who delivered between July 1, 2007, and December 31, 2009, at Kangnam CHA Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. Only patients with available estriol measurements during their pregnancies and complete follow-up data were included in the study. The effect of estriol on the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes was examined using multinomial logistic regression analysis with age and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) as covariates. The total number of subjects was 1,553, the mean age was 32.9 ± 3.7 years, and the mean pre-pregnancy BMI was 21.2 ± 3.0 kg/m2. Unconjugated estriol > 95th percentile of the screened population or unconjugated estriol ≥ 2.0 MoM (Multiple of the Median) was significantly associated with an increased risk for developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), after adjusting for age and pre-pregnancy maternal weight. High levels of unconjugated estriol in the maternal serum during the early second trimester of pregnancy are a useful predictor of GDM development.

Microneedle systems are a rapidly growing and promising technology for delivery of drugs, such as vaccines, small molecules, or biologics and for aesthetic skin treatment in local clinics; however, they remain relatively new from a regulatory perspective. There are strong demands for established procedures, test requirements for approval, and recent trends that industries/researchers related to microneedle systems can refer to. Some microneedle systems are commercially available, many are currently undergoing clinical trials, and some are pending approval for commercialization. This review focuses on microneedle systems that are either on the market or in clinical trials, their applicability and characteristics, and the critical evaluation and test methods necessary for their development and approval.

Background: Preterm birth is strongly associated with increasing mortality, incidence of disability, intensity of neonatal care required, and consequent costs. We examined the clinical utility of the potential preterm birth risk factors from admitted pregnant women with symptomatic preterm labor and developed prediction models to obtain information for prolonging pregnancies. Methods: This retrospective study included pregnant women registered with the KOrean Preterm collaboratE Network (KOPEN) who had symptomatic preterm labor, between 16 and 34 gestational weeks, in a tertiary care center from March to November 2016. Demographics, obstetric and medical histories, and basic laboratory test results obtained at admission were evaluated. The preterm birth probability was assessed using a nomogram and decision tree according to birth gestational age: early preterm, before 32 weeks; late preterm, between 32 and 37 weeks; and term, after 37 weeks. Results: Of 879 registered pregnant women, 727 who gave birth at a designated institute were analyzed. The rates of early preterm, late preterm, and term births were 18.16%, 44.02%, and 37.83%, respectively. With the developed nomogram, the concordance index for early and late preterm births was 0.824 (95% CI: 0.785-0.864) and 0.717 (95% CI: 0.675-0.759) respectively. Preterm birth was significantly more likely among women with multiple pregnancy and had water leakage due to premature rupture of membrane. The prediction rate for preterm birth based on decision tree analysis was 86.9% for early preterm and 73.9% for late preterm; the most important nodes are watery leakage for early preterm birth and multiple pregnancy for late preterm birth. Conclusion: This study aims to develop an individual overall probability of preterm birth based on specific risk factors at critical gestational times of preterm birth using a range of clinical variables recorded at the initial hospital admission. Therefore, these models may be useful for clinicians and patients in clinical decision-making and for hospitalization or lifestyle coaching in an outpatient setting.

There have been few studies investigating the association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and prenatal exposure to heavy metals. We aimed to evaluate whether prenatal exposure to heavy metals is associated with the development or severity of AD in a birth cohort study. A total of 331 subjects were followed from birth for a median duration of 60.0 months. The presence and severity of AD were evaluated at ages 6 and 12 months, and regularly once a year thereafter. The concentrations of lead, mercury, chromium, and cadmium in umbilical cord blood were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMCs) were isolated and stimulated for analysis of cytokine production using ELISA. Heavy metal levels in cord blood were not associated with the development of AD until 24 months of age. However, a positive correlation was observed between the duration of AD and lead levels in cord blood (p=0.002). AD severity was also positively associated with chromium concentrations in cord blood (p=0.037), while cord blood levels of lead, mercury, and cadmium were not significantly associated with AD severity (p=0.562, p=0.054, and p=0.055, respectively). Interleukin-13 production in CBMCs was positively related with lead and chromium levels in cord blood (p=0.021 and p=0.015, respectively). Prenatal exposure to lead and chromium is associated with the persistence and severity of AD, and the immune reaction toward a Th2 polarization.

Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as loss of ovarian function in women less than 40 years of age. The causes of POF are diverse and include environmental factors. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is one factor that may cause POF. The ubiquitin-proteasome system maintains intracellular balance by promoting or inhibiting protein degradation. To investigate the differential expressions of deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) genes in patients with POF, we developed two in vitro POF models by treating A2780 or OVCAR5 with DEHP. Using these models, a multiplex RT-PCR system for DUB genes was applied to identify biomarkers by comparing expression patterns and DUB mRNA levels, multiplex RT-PCR results were validated by qRT-PCR and Western blotting analyses. Observed differential expression levels of several DUB genes including USP12, COPS5, ATXN3L, USP49, and USP34 in A2780 and OVCAR5 cells at the mRNA and protein levels suggest that they should be investigated as potential biomarkers of POF.

A study of structural and mechanistic investigation of the Sb/V/Ce/Ti catalysts sulfated at different temperatures was carried out by X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) and diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The high temperature sulfated catalyst, especially Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S500 (sulfated at 500 °C temperatures), exhibited superior NO x conversion at low temperatures (150–200 °C) compared to Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S400 and Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S300 (sulfated at 400 and 300 °C) catalysts. The Ce L 3 edge XANES spectra of Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S500 catalyst showed the formation of Ce(III) dominant sulfate species, resulting in the enhancement of Lewis and Bronsted acid strength. The formation of Ce(III) sulfate species on Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S500 catalyst was clearly indicated by Ce M 4,5 and S K edge XANES spectra peaks at 881.9 eV attributed to Ce 3+ oxidation state and 2481 eV assigned to S 6+ oxidation state of sulfate species. Furthermore, the in situ DRIFTS results revealed that the Lewis and Bronsted acid sites of Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S500 catalysts increased significantly, followed by Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S400 and Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S300. At 200 °C, the reaction between the pre-adsorbed NH 3 species with NO + O 2 on sulfated catalysts exhibited the formation of mono-dentate, bi-dentate, bridging nitrates and NO 2 species. Meanwhile, the subsequent formation of NO 2 via NO oxidation was promoted on Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S400 and Sb/V/Ce/Ti-S500 catalysts, followed by surface interaction with adsorbed NH 3 to produce N 2 and H 2 O at low temperatures (

본 연구는 약용식물인 적하수오의 부정근과 생리활성물질 대량생산을 위해 생물반응기 배양 조건을 확립하고자 실시되었다. 이를 위하여 생물반응기 배양 시 배지 내 무기물 함량과, auxin의 종류와 농도, sucrose 농도가 적하수오 부정근의 생장과 총 phenolics와 flavonoids 함량에 미치는 영향을 조사하였으며, 배양 중 methyl jasmonate (MeJA)와 salicylic acid (SA)의 첨가가 생리활성물질 축적에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 그 결과 $9.84{\mu}M$ IBA와 50 g/L sucrose가 첨가된 1배 MS배지에서 최적의 부정근 생장이 이루어졌으며 생리활성물질 축적도 가장 높았다. MeJA와 SA 처리시 적하수오 부정근의 생장과 생리활성물질 축적은 오히려 감소하였다. 본 연구 결과는 산업적 목적을 위한 적하수오의 부정근과 생리활성물질 대량생산시 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 【This study was conducted to investigate the productivity of biomass and antioxidant compounds in Polygonum multiflorum by culturing explants in air-lift bioreactor containing Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, by adding different concentrations of auxins [indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA)], sucrose, methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and salicylic acid (SA). Results of this study revealed that the explants culturing on the medium supplemented with $9.84{\mu}M$ IBA and 50 g/L sucrose were observed to have higher productivity of biomass and bioactive compound than other treatments used. Thus, we expect that these results will be helpful for large-scale production of biomass and antioxidant compounds from Polygonum multiflorum.】

An efficient regeneration protocol for stem disc culture of Populus euramericana, which is important species for bioenergy resource in agroforestry, was established. The number of explants that were obtained and the number of explants that regenerated varied with the genotypes. However, in all the genotypes, stem disc culture produced more regenerated shoots than did in axillary bud culture. A comparison of the effects of cytokinin type and concentration on shoot regeneration in different explants (i.e., petiole, leaf, and root segments of P. euramericana) revealed that a concentration of 0.002 mg l-1 thidiazuron (TDZ) used on petiole segments resulted in the greatest shoot regeneration (95.83%). The hormonal requirements for the greatest shoot regeneration in the three explant types varied. Different concentrations of AgNO3 and CoCl2 were added separately to the medium to stop the yellowing and subsequent necrosis of the regenerated shoots. Lower concentrations (3 and 5 mg l-1) of these compounds improved shoot regeneration and elongation, compared with the control. The in vitro-regenerated shoots were transferred to rooting medium and subsequently acclimatized. The highly efficient regeneration system of P. euramericana reported here can be used for mass propagation of this recalcitrant for regeneration, economically important tree species.

The electrical property of a Ga-doped ZnO(GZO) thin film is well known to be similar that of commercialized fluorine-doped tin oxide(FTO). However GZO is limited for use at high process temperatures for solar cells because of its unstable resistivity at temperatures above 300 °C. A GZO thin film compared to zinc tin oxide(ZTO)-GZO multilayer can be used at high process temperatures. A GZO thin film was deposited on glass by using pulsed DC magnetron sputter. Then, a ZTO buffer layer was deposited on the GZO surface. During the deposition, the working pressure was 5 mTorr (Z-1 glass) and 1 mTorr (Z-2 glass). Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using Z-1, Z-2 and commercialized FTO glasses. Z-2 showed a conversion efficiency of 4.265%, which was enhanced by 0.399% compared to that of the DSSCs using FTO(3.784%). The conversion efficiency for Z-1 (3.889%) was a little higher than that of FTO. Thus, the ZTO-GZO electrode showed better characteristics than those obtained using the FTO electrode, which can be attributed to the reduced charge recombination and series resistance.

The chlorophyll-a concentration in algae bloom warning system of Hangang basin did not predict the cyanobacteria dominance. In this study, suggest the predicting indicator of cyanobacteria dominance through analyzing the environmental factors affecting on the cell count of cyanobacteria. Firstly, the dominance of algae was analyzed with seasonal variation during Jan. 2012~Sep. 2013. The diatom dominated phytoplankton communities during the period of January~April. In the May~June, the green algae dominated. And, the dominance of algae was changed to cyanobacteria in the July~August. Also, the environmental factors affecting to cyanobacteria blooms ; nutrients (TN, TP), temperature, precipitation, dam-discharge were evaluated during the study period. Rather than temperature factor, relatively low dam discharge causes cyanobacteria to grow rapidly and create a blooms. The low dam-discharge may increase the water retention time. Maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are associated with obesity and diabetes risk in offspring. We tested whether maternal insulin resistance, which frequently coexists with GDM and obesity, could independently contribute to dysregulation of offspring metabolism. Female mice haploinsufficient for insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS1-het) are hyperinsulinemic and insulin resistant during pregnancy, despite normal plasma glucose and body weight, and thus serve as a model of isolated maternal insulin resistance. Wild-type (WT) offspring of IRS1-het dams insulin resistance-exposed [IR-exposed] were compared with WT offspring of WT dams. Despite no differences in adiposity, male IR-exposed pups were glucose intolerant (P = 0.04) and hyperinsulinemic (1.3-fold increase, P = 0.02) by 1 month of age and developed progressive fasting hyperglycemia. Moreover, male IR-exposed pups challenged with high-fat diet exhibited insulin resistance. Liver lipidomic analysis of 3-week-old IR-exposed males revealed increases in the 16:1n7 fraction of several lipid classes, suggesting increased Scd1 activity. By 6 months of age, IR-exposed males had increased lipid accumulation in liver as well as increased plasma refed fatty acids, consistent with disrupted lipid metabolism. Our results indicate that isolated maternal insulin resistance, even in the absence of hyperglycemia or obesity, can promote metabolic perturbations in male offspring.

We propose a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-doped liquid crystal (LC) device with enhanced electro-optical properties. MWCNT-doped LC cells were successfully operated as a twisted nematic LC device with high performance. The LC cells fabricated with MWCNT-doped LCs and a polyimide layer exhibited the best electro-optical properties, such as a low threshold voltage (1.60 V) and fast response time (13.95 ms). MWCNT doping decreased the pre-tilt angles of LC mixtures. Additionally, UV-visible transmittances and photomicrograph images of LC cells indicated LCD application potential with clear and uniform LC alignment.

Purpose Previous studies suggest that the concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in cord blood may show an inverse association with respiratory tract infections (RTI) during childhood. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of 25(OH)D concentrations in cord blood on infant RTI in a Korean birth cohort. Methods The levels of 25(OH)D in cord blood obtained from 525 Korean newborns in the prospective COhort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and allergic diseases were examined. The primary outcome variable of interest was the prevalence of RTI at 6-month follow-up, as diagnosed by pediatricians and pediatric allergy and pulmonology specialists. RTI included acute nasopharyngitis, rhinosinusitis, otitis media, croup, tracheobronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. Results The median concentration of 25(OH)D in cord blood was 32.0 nmol/L (interquartile range, 21.4 to 53.2). One hundred and eighty neonates (34.3%) showed 25(OH)D concentrations less than 25.0 nmol/L, 292 (55.6%) showed 25(OH)D concentrations of 25.0-74.9 nmol/L, and 53 (10.1%) showed concentrations of ≥75.0 nmol/L. Adjusting for the season of birth, multivitamin intake during pregnancy, and exposure to passive smoking during pregnancy, 25(OH)D concentrations showed an inverse association with the risk of acquiring acute nasopharyngitis by 6 months of age (P for trend=0.0004). Conclusion The results show that 89.9% of healthy newborns in Korea are born with vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency (55.6% and 34.3%, respectively). Cord blood vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency in healthy neonates is associated with an increased risk of acute nasopharyngitis by 6 months of age. More time spent outdoors and more intensified vitamin D supplementation for pregnant women may be needed to prevent the onset of acute nasopharyngitis in infants.

A systematic investigation of the effect of ceria loading over Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalysts was carried out for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. The various ceria loaded Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by deposition precipitation and impregnation methods. Addition of 10% ceria to Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalyst significantly enhanced the NOx conversion at wide temperature range of 220–500 °C. The 10% ceria loaded Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalyst showed superior N2 selectivity (>95%) throughout the reaction temperatures. The physicochemical characteristics of the obtained catalysts were thoroughly characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of NO, SO2 and NH3, H2- temperature programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The XRD results indicated the active components of antimony and vanadia were homogeneously dispersed over CeO2/TiO2. It was found that the addition of 10% ceria to Sb-V2O5/TiO2 could enhance the total acidity and redox properties of the catalyst, which lead to show higher NOx conversions at wide temperature window. In XPS studies, increase in intensity of the chemisorbed mobile oxygen peak was observed for ceria loaded catalysts. In particular, the DRIFT spectra of ceria loaded Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalysts showed abundant Bronsted acid sites at 1436 and 1673 cm−1 band, which are responsible for high NOx conversion. Furthermore, the results of NO and SO2 TPD of 10% ceria loaded Sb-V2O5/TiO2 catalyst showed enhancement of NO adsorption and SO2 inhibition properties, which is thought to play a significant role in long term stability of the catalyst during SO2 on–off study for 38 h at 240 °C.

The Sb–CeO2/TiO2 (SCT) catalytic system with different vanadia loading (0–3 % w/w) was systematically investigated for removal of NO by NH3. A series of catalysts prepared by impregnation and deposition precipitation methods were thoroughly characterized physically, by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and chemically, by temperature-programmed desorption (NH3 and SO2-TPD), temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and in-situ DRIFT study. NH3-TPD and H2-TPR results for 2 and 3 % vanadia-loaded Sb–CeO2/TiO2 catalysts revealed high total acidity and reducibility. As a result, both catalysts had high activity at low temperatures. At 240 °C for 20 h the 2 % vanadia-loaded Sb–CeO2/TiO2 catalyst was more resistant to SO2 than the 3 % vanadia catalyst. In addition, in-situ SO2 DRIFT study revealed the existence of more surface sulfate species on Sb–CeO2/TiO2 than on vanadia-loaded Sb–CeO2/TiO2 catalysts.

In this research, we will present Al doped ZnO thin films for transparent conducting oxide applications. Aluminum doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films have been deposited on the glass substrates by sol-gel spin-coating method using zinc acetate dehydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2 2H2O) and aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl3 x 6H2O) as cation sources. In this study, we investigated the effects of near infrared ray (NIR) annealing on the structural, optical and electrical characteristics of the AZO thin films. The experimental results showed that AZO thin films have a hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure and had a good transmittance higher than 85% within the visible wavelength region. It was also found that the additional energy of NIR helps to improve the electrical properties of Al doped ZnO transparent conducting oxides.
