1. Data Acquisition System for the CALICE AHCAL Calorimeter

Abstract

The data acquisition system (DAQ) for a highly granular analogue hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) for the future International Linear Collider is presented. The developed DAQ chain has several stages of aggregation and scales up to 8 million channels foreseen for the AHCAL detector design. The largest aggregation device, Link Data Aggregator, has 96 HDMI connectors, four Kintex7 FPGAs and a central Zynq System-On-Chip. Architecture and performance results are shown in detail. Abstract

We present herein gain stabilization studies of SiPMs using a climate chamber at CERN. We present results for four detectors not tested before, three from Hamamatsu and one from KETEK. Two of the Hamamatsu SiPMs are novel sensors with trenches that reduce cross talk. We use an improved readout system with a digital oscilloscope controlled with a dedicated LabView program. We improved and automized the analysis to deal with large datasets. We have measured the gain-versus-bias-voltage dependence at fixed temperature and gain-versus-temperature dependence at fixed bias voltage to determine the bias voltage dependence on temperature $V(T)$ for stable gain. We show that the gain remains stable to better than $\pm 0.5\%$ in the $20^\circ \rm C - 30^\circ C$ temperature range if the bias voltage is properly adjusted with temperature., Comment: 14 pages, 41 figures, Talk presented at the International Workshop on Future Linear Colliders (LCWS15), Whistler, Canada, 2-6 November 2015

Abstract

The gain of SiPMs depends both on bias voltage and on temperature. For stable operations, both need to be kept constant. In an ILC calorimeter with millions of channels, this is a challenging task. It is, therefore, desirable to compensate for temperature variations by automatically readjusting the bias voltage. We have designed a bias voltage regulator board to achieve this task. We anticipate an uncertainty on the gain stability at the level of $< 1\%$. First, we present measurements of the gain dependence on temperature and bias voltage for several SiPMs from three different manufacturers and determine their dV/dT dependence. Next, we demonstrate the performance of the gain stability with the bias voltage regulator test board on four SiPMs., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, presented by G. Abstract

We report about the performance of the HBU0 board and the optical calibration system QMB6 in the DESY test beam. A MIP signal was measured on the HBU0 board, providing a reference to the LED amplitude scan, showing an amount of light delivered to each of 12 SiPMs from 0 to 250 MIP at maximum. An ASIC analogue memory cell performance was analyzed in relation with the SiPM signal strength. Abstract

The International Large Detector, ILD, is a detector concept which has been developed for the electron-positron collider ILC. The detector has been optimized for precision physics in a range of energies between 90 GeV and 1 TeV. ILD features a high precision, large volume combined silicon and gaseous tracking system, together with a high granularity calorimeter, all inside a 3.5 T solenoidal magnetic field. The paradigm of particle flow has been the guiding principle of the design of ILD. In this document the required performance of the detector, the proposed implementation and the readiness of the different technologies needed for the implementation are discussed. This is done in the framework of the ILC collider proposal, now under consideration in Japan, and includes site specific aspects needed to build and operate the detector at the proposed ILC site in Japan.

Abstract

The ILD detector is proposed for an electron-positron collider with collision centre-of-mass energies from 90~\GeV~to about 1~\TeV. It has been developed over the last 10 years by an international team of scientists with the goal to design and eventually propose a fully integrated detector, primarily for the International Linear Collider, ILC. In this report the fundamental ideas and concepts behind the ILD detector are discussed and the technologies needed for the realisation of the detector are reviewed. The document starts with a short review of the science goals of the ILC, and how the goals can be achieved today with the detector technologies at hand. After a discussion of the ILC and the environment in which the experiment will take place, the detector is described in more detail, including the status of the development of the technologies foreseen for each subdetector. The integration of the different sub-systems into an integrated detector is discussed, as is the interface between the detector and the collider. This is followed by a concise summary of the benchmarking which has been performed in order to find an optimal balance between performance and cost. To the end the costing methodology used by ILD is presented, and an updated cost estimate for the detector is presented. The report closes with a summary of the current status and of planned future actions.

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is triggered by ectopic beats originating from extensions of the left atrial myocardium over the pulmonary veins (PVs), so-called myocardial sleeves. A total of 100 hearts (393 PVs) obtained at autopsy were studied. Of these, 50 were from patients with chronic AF and 50 from controls in sinus rhythm. Out of a total of 393 PVs studied, a sleeve was present in 349 PVs (88.8%). The myocardial sleeves frequently harboured senile atrial amyloid and scarring. These two changes were evaluated semi-quantitatively (grade 0-3). Amyloidosis was found in 68% of all hearts and in 55% of all sleeves. It was more frequent in patients with AF (58.5%) than in those without (51.7%), however, without statistical significance (p values 0.948, 0.306, 0.166 and 1). Scarring was present in all 349 sleeves studied. It was significantly more severe in patients with AF (average grade 2.44) than in those without (average grade 2.00) (p values <0.001, <0.1, <0.05 and <0.01). In conclusion, amyloidosis and particularly scarring of the myocardial sleeves of the pulmonary veins, appear to be common in the elderly population as an arrhythmogenic substrate for AF.
