7. An interlayer with low solubility for lithium enhances tolerance to dendrite growth in solid state electrolytes

Abstract

All solid state Li-ion batteries employing metallic lithium as an anode offer higher energy densities while also being safer than conventional liquid electrolyte based Li-ion batteries. However, the growth of tiny filaments of lithium (dendrites) across the solid state electrolyte layer leads to premature shorting of cells and limits their practical viability. The microscopic mechanisms that lead to lithium dendrite growth in solid state cells are still unclear. Using garnet based lithium ion conductor as a model solid state electrolyte, we show that interfacial void growth during lithium dissolution precedes dendrite nucleation and growth. Using a simple electrostatic model, we show that current density at the edges of the voids could be amplified by as much as four orders of magnitude making the cells highly susceptible to dendrite growth after void formation. We propose the use of metallic interlayers with low solubility and high nucleation overpotential for lithium to delay void growth. Abstract

The semiconducting behavior of two-dimensional (2D) metal nanostructures has recently attracted much interest for their possible applications in optoelectronics and others. In particular, tuning the bandgap of such nanostructures can open up a new avenue for fabricating functional nano-devices. In the present article, we report the synthesis of 2D metallic Zn nanosheets at room temperature using a ball mill, which is capable of producing large-scale materials in a single run. Initially, nanoplates were formed for ball milling the octahedral-shaped Zn nanoparticles for the time of milling of 6 h. Subsequent ball milling for another 6 h leads these nanoplates to nearly uniform nanosheets. The thickness of these 2D nanostructures was found to decrease with an increase in the time of milling. Visible photoluminescence (PL) emissions centered at ∼3, ∼2.9, and ∼2.75 eV were observed from all the Zn particles showing semiconductor behavior. The origin of such semiconductor behavior was explained based on the radiative transition of electrons from the sp band to the upper states of the 3d band. This argument was confirmed through the studies of photoelectron spectroscopy and the first principle calculations employing density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, excitation-dependent PL studies indicated that the bandgap of the 2D Zn nanostructures decreased with the increase in the ball milling time. Therefore, a redshift in the bandgap was observed with the increase in the ball milling time. Such changes in the bandgap with the thickness of 2D Zn nanostructures were also verified from the studies of DFT. Thus, the present study demonstrated that the bandgap of 2D metallic Zn nanostructures could be effectively tuned by reducing the thickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We proposed and numerically investigated a new circular hollow photonic crystal fiber made of LiNbO3 as the high-index ring material with silica as the background layer supporting orbital angular momentum modes. The proposed fiber supports > 120 orbital angular momentum modes for signal transmission with flat dispersion ~ 1.6 ps-nm− 1 km− 1 in the O + E + S + C + L and U Bands. The high effective mode index difference of ~ 10− 3 and high fiber bending tolerance (~ 0.1 cm) across the optical bands are notable features of the architecture. The proposed photonic crystal fiber has the potential to be utilised in high-bandwidth fiber communication systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
