Abstract

Unbound states in 17C were investigated via one-neutron removal from a 18C beam at an energy of 245 MeV/nucleon on a carbon target. The energy spectrum of 17C, above the single-neutron decay threshold, was reconstructed using invariant mass spectroscopy from the measured momenta of the 16C fragment and neutron, and was found to exhibit resonances at Er=0.52(2), 0.77(2), 1.36(1), 1.91(1), 2.22(3) and 3.20(1) MeV. The resonance at Er=0.77(2) MeV [Ex=1.51(3) MeV] was provisionally assigned as the second 5/2+ state. The two resonances at Er=1.91(1) and 3.20(1) MeV [Ex=2.65(2) and 3.94(2) MeV] were identified, through comparison of the energies, cross sections and momentum distributions with shell-model and eikonal reaction calculations, as p-shell hole states with spin-parities 1/2- and 3/2-, respectively. A detailed comparison was made with the results obtained using a range of shell-model interactions. Abstract

Modern theories of physics tell that the vacuum is not an empty space. Hidden in the vacuum is a structure of anti-quarks $\bar{q}$ and quarks $q$. The $\bar{q}$ and $q$ pair has the same quantum number as the vacuum and condensates in it since the strong interaction of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is too strong to leave it empty. The $\bar{q}q$ condensation breaks the chiral symmetry of the vacuum. The expectation value $<\bar{q}q>$ is an order parameter. For higher temperature or higher matter-density, $|<\bar{q}q>|$ decreases reflecting the restoration of the symmetry. In contrast to these clear-cut arguments, experimental evidence is so far limited. First of all, the $\bar{q}q$ is nothing but the vacuum itself. It is neither visible nor perceptible. In this article, we unravel this invisible existence by high precision measurement of pionic atoms, $\pi^-$-meson-nucleus bound systems. Using the $\pi^-$ as a probe, we demonstrate that $|<\bar{q}q>|$ is reduced in the nucleus at 58% of the normal nuclear density by a factor of 77 $\pm$ 2% compared with that in the vacuum. This reduction indicates that the chiral symmetry is partially restored due to the extremely high density of the nucleus. The present experimental result clearly exhibits the existence of the hidden structure, the chiral condensate, in the vacuum.

Abstract

The fringing fields of magnets with large apertures and short lengths greatly affect ion-optical calculations. In particular, for a high magnetic field where the iron core becomes saturated, the effective lengths and shapes of the field distribution must be considered because they change with the excitation current. Precise measurement of the three-dimensional magnetic fields and the correct application of parameters in the ion-optical calculations are necessary. First we present a practical numerical method of extracting full 3D magnetic field maps of magnetic multipoles from 2D field measurements of the surface of a cylinder. Using this novel method we extracted the distributions along the beam axis for the coefficient of the first-order quadrupole component, which is the leading term of the quadrupole components in the multipole expansion of magnetic fields and proportional to the distance from the axis. Higher order components of the 3D magnetic field can be extracted from the leading term via recursion relations. The measurements were done for many excitation current values for the large-aperture superconducting triplet quadrupole magnets (STQs) in the BigRIPS fragment separator at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. These distributions were parameterized using the Enge functions to fit the fringe field shapes at all excitation current values, so that unmeasured values are interpolated. The extracted distributions depend only on the position along the beam axis, and thus the measured three-dimensional field can easily be parameterized for ion-optical calculations. We implemented these parameters in the ion-optical calculation code COSY INFINITY and realized a first-order calculation that incorporates the effect of large and varying fringe fields more accurately. Abstract

A search for new isotopes using in-flight fission of a 345 MeV/nucleon 238U beam has been carried out at the RI Beam Factory at the RIKEN Nishina Center. Fission fragments were analyzed and identified by using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS. Abstract

Background and Aim: The tumor microenvironment plays an essential role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). We recently reported that crosstalk between CRC cells and tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) via serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) promotes invasion by T1 CRCs. In the present study, we aimed to clarify the role of neutrophils in early CRCs. Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of CD66b, chemokine CXC motif ligand 8 (CXCL8 or interleukin‐8, IL‐8) and matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP‐9) was performed using primary T1 CRCs (n = 49). The HL‐60 human promyelocytic leukemia cell line and THP‐1 human monocytic leukemia cell line were used to obtain neutrophil‐like and macrophage‐like cells, respectively. Boyden chamber assays were used to analyze cell migration and invasion, and quantitative RT‐PCR was used to analyze gene expression. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed accumulation of neutrophils at the SAA1‐positive invasive front of T1 CRCs. Experiments using HL‐60 cells suggested that treatment with SAA1 induced neutrophil migration and expression of CXCL8 and MMP‐9 in neutrophils and that neutrophils promote CRC cell migration and invasion. Immunohistochemistry confirmed accumulation of CXCL8‐ or MMP‐9‐positive neutrophils at the SAA1‐positive invasive front of T1 CRCs. Moreover, co‐culture experiments using CRC, THP‐1 and HL‐60 cells suggested that CRC cells activated by macrophages upregulate CXCL8 and MMP‐9 in neutrophils. Conclusions: Our results suggest that interplay between macrophages and CRC cells leads to recruitment of neutrophils to the invasive front of T1 CRCs and that SAA1 secreted by CRC cells activate neutrophils to promote invasion. Abstract

Isotopic production cross sections were measured for proton- and deuteron-induced reactions on 93Nb by means of the inverse kinematics method at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The measured production cross sections of residual nuclei in the reaction 93Nb + p at 113 MeV/u were compared with previous data measured by the conventional activation method in the proton energy range between 46 and 249 MeV. The present inverse kinematics data of four reaction products (90Mo, 90Nb, 88Y, and 86Y) were in good agreement with the data of activation measurement. Also, the model calculations with PHITS describing the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation processes generally well reproduced the measured isotopic production cross sections.

Abstract

Isotopic production cross sections in the proton- and deuteron-induced spallation reactions on 93Zr at an energy of 105 MeV/u were measured in inverse kinematics conditions for the development of realistic nuclear transmutation processes for long-lived fission products (LLFPs) with neutron and light-ion beams. The experimental results were compared to the PHITS calculations describing the intra-nuclear cascade and evaporation processes. Although an overall agreement was obtained, a large overestimation of the production cross sections for the removal of a few nucleons was seen. A clear shell effect associated with the neutron magic number N = 50 was observed in the measured isotopic production yields of Zr and Y isotopes, which can be reproduced reasonably by the PHITS calculation.

Abstract

The spectroscopic structure of 19C, a prominent one-neutron halo nucleus, has been studied with a 20C secondary beam at 290 MeV/nucleon and a carbon target. Neutron-unbound states populated by the one-neutron knockout reaction were investigated by means of the invariant mass method. The preliminary relative energy spectrum and parallel momentum distribution of the knockout residue, 19C*, were reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 18C fragment, neutron, and beam. Three resonances were observed in the spectrum, which correspond to the states at Ex = 0.62(9), 1.42(10), and 2.89(10) MeV. The parallel momentum distributions for the 0.62-MeV and 2.89-MeV states suggest spin-parity assignments of 5/2+ and 1/2−, respectively. The 1.42-MeV state is in line with the reported 5/22+ state.

Abstract

A spectroscopic study of 17C was performed via the one-neutron knockout reaction of 18C on a carbon target at RIKEN-RIBF. Three unbound states at excitation energies of 2.66(2), 3.16(5), and 3.97(3) MeV (preliminary) were observed. The energies are compared with shell-model calculations and existing measurements to deduce their spin-parities. From the comparison, the states at 2.66(2) and 3.97(3) MeV are suggested to be 1/2− and 3/2−, respectively. From its decay property, the state at 3.16(5) MeV is indicated to be 9/2+.

Abstract

We conduct an experimental project to make spectroscopy of deeply bound pionic atoms systematically over wide range of nuclei. We aim at studying the strong interaction in the low energy region, which has close connection to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and its partial restoration in nuclear matter. First experimental results show improved spectral resolution and much better statistical sensitivity than previous experiments. Present status of the experiment is reported.

Abstract

Isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced spallation reactions on Nb93 at 113 MeV/nucleon were measured using the inverse-kinematics method employing secondary targets of CH2, CD2, and C. The measured cross sections for Mo90, Nb90, Y86,88 produced by p-induced reactions were found to be consistent with those measured by the conventional activation method. We performed benchmark tests of the reaction models INCL-4.6, JQMD, and JQMD-2.0 implemented in the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) and of the nuclear data libraries JENDL-4.0/HE, TENDL-2017, and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The model calculations also showed generally good agreement with the measured isotope-production cross sections for p-, d-, and C-induced reactions. It also turns out that, among the three nuclear data libraries, JENDL-4.0/HE provides the best agreement with the measured data for the p-induced reactions. We compared the present Nb93 data with the Zr93 data, that were measured previously by the same inverse kinematics method (Kawase et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2017, 093D03 (2017)2050-391110.1093/ptep/ptx110), with particular attention to the effect of neutron-shell closure on isotope production in p- and d-induced spallation reactions. The isotopic distributions of the measured production cross sections in the Zr93 data showed noticeable jumps at neutron number N=50 in the isotopic chains of ΔZ=0 and -1, whereas no such jump appeared in isotopic chain of ΔZ=0 in the Nb93 data. From INCL-4.6 + GEM calculations, we found that the jump formed in the evaporation process is smeared out by the intranuclear cascade component in Nb91 produced by the Nb93(p,p2n) and (d,d2n) reactions on Nb93. Moreover, for Nb93, the distribution of the element-production cross sections as a function of the change in proton number ΔZ is shifted to smaller ΔZ than for Zr93, because the excited Nb prefragments generated by the cascade process are more likely to emit protons than the excited Zr prefragments, due to the smaller proton-separation energies of the Nb isotopes.

The experiment serves as a pilot experiment for our new ‘pionic atom factory project’ at RIBF, which aims at precision spectroscopy of the energy spectrum of the pionic atom of isotopes and isotones. The result of the pilot experiment demonstrated the potentiality of BigRIPS and of the RIBF facilities for the project. The current status of the analysis is reported.
