Abstract

Organ-on-Chips (OoCs) have emerged as a human-specific experimental platform for preclinical research and therapeutics testing that will reduce the cost of pre-clinical drug development, provide better physiological relevance and replace animal testing. Yet, the lack of standardization and cost-effective fabrication technologies can hamper wide-spread adoption of OoCs. In this work we validate the use of flat panel display (FPD) technology as an enabling and cost-effective technology platform for biomedical applications by demonstrating facile integration of key OoC modules like microfluidics and micro electrode arrays (MEAs) in the standardized 96-well plate format. Individual and integrated modules were tested for their biological applicability in OoCs. For microelectrode arrays we demonstrate 90–95% confluency, 3 days after cell seeding and >70% of the initial mitochondrial cell activity for microfluidic devices. Thus highlighting the biocompatibility of these modules fabricated using FPD technology. Furthermore, we provide two examples of monolithically integrated microfluidics and microelectronics, i.e. integrated electronic valves and integrated MEAs, that showcase the strength of FPD technology applied to biomedical device fabrication. Finally, the merits and opportunities provided by FPD technology are discussed through examples of advanced structures and functionalities that are unique to this enabling platform.

Abstract

Spatial atomic layer deposition (sALD) of p-type SnO is demonstrated using a novel liquid ALD precursor, tin(II)-bis(tert-amyloxide), Sn(TAA)2, and H2O as the coreactant in a process which shows an increased deposition rate when compared to conventional temporal ALD. Compared to previously reported temporal ALD chemistries for the deposition of SnO, deposition rates of up to 19.5 times higher are obtained using Sn(TAA)2 as a precursor in combination with atmospheric pressure sALD. Growths per cycle of 0.55 and 0.09 Å are measured at deposition temperatures of 100 and 210 °C, respectively. Common-gate thin film transistors (TFTs), fabricated using sALD with Sn(TAA)2 result in linear mobilities of up to 0.4 cm2 V–1 s–1 and on/off-current ratios, IOn/IOff > 102. The combination of enhanced precursor chemistry and improved deposition hardware enables unprecedently high deposition rate ALD of p-type SnO, representing a significant step toward high-throughput p-type TFT fabrication on large area and flexible substrates.

Abstract

Going towards high-resolution, uniform displays with a high-brightness range requires optimizations on different topics. This work presents an overview on this subject. To achieve a good uniformity, a compensation method is proposed using a 2T1C pixel circuit, compatible with high-resolution requirements, improving uniformity by a factor 52.5. In order to further increase the achievable resolution, a new technology stack, using a planar and a vertical TFT is introduced. Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate a capacitive coupled data transfer with flexible thin-film electronics using touchscreen as ubiquitous reader interface. The capacitive communication to the touchscreen is proven using a 64-bit metal-oxide thin-film capacitive-coupled identification tag. The tag is powered by a thin film battery or thin-film photovoltaic cell that is converting the light of the screen. The thin-film integrated tag has on-chip monolithic electrodes (0.8cm2), and the integrated circuit employs 409 transistors and dissipates only 140nW of power at 600mV supply voltage. The asynchronous data rate of the chip is up to 35bps, strictly limited by the touchscreen readout electronics.

© 2019 IEEE. Thin-film transistor (TFT) technologies have long been used predominantly for display fabrication and are attractive for large area, low cost and flexible circuit applications. Thanks to the improving performance of thin-film metal-oxide NFC tags and data processing chips on foil [1], [2], fabs are considering the large-scale production of flexible logic circuits. However, these systems require a memory, but metal-oxide technology lacks reliable, large memory arrays. Today, data storage is limited to ROMs, flipflops and SRAMs. No memory array has been demonstrated with sufficient storage capacity and speed within the typical power and area budget. Abstract

A unique vertical organic field-effect transistor structure in which highly doped silicon nanopillars are utilized as a gate electrode is demonstrated. An additional dielectric layer, partly covering the source, suppresses bulk conduction and lowers the OFF current. Using a semiconducting polymer as active channel material, short-channel (100 nm) transistors with ON/OFF current ratios up to 10 6 are realized. The electronic behavior is explained using space-charge and contact-limited current models and numerical simulations. The current density and switching speed of the devices are in the order of 0.1 A cm −2 and 0.1 MHz, respectively, at biases of only a few volts. These characteristics make the devices very promising for applications where large current densities, high switching speeds, and high ON/OFF ratios are required.

Abstract

High-resolution RGB organic light-emitting diode frontplane is a key enabler for direct-view transparent augmented reality displays. In this paper, we demonstrate 1250 ppi passive displays and semi-transparent active displays. Organic light-emitting diode photolithography can provide pixel density above 1000 ppi while keeping effective emission area high because of high aperture ratio. Patterns with 2 μm line pitch were successfully transferred to emission layers, indicating possible further pixel density scaling. Lifetime after patterning, key parameter enabling industrialization, is above 150 h (T90 at 1000 nit).

Abstract

A novel external VT compensation method, using a simple driving scheme, is presented, enabling high resolution, yet uniform displays, regardless of the size. The uniformity can be maintained for initial VT nonuniformities as well as VT shifts occurring during operation, like bias stress. The characterized display area shows a significant reduction in current variation, transforming ~23% variation without compensation into 0.56% variation after calibration.
