Abstract

A measurement of beam helicity asymmetries in the reaction 3He(e,e'n)pp has been performed at the Mainz Microtron in quasielastic kinematics in order to determine the electric to magnetic form factor ratio of the neutron, GEn/GMn, at a four momentum transfer Q2 = 1.58 GeV2. Longitudinally polarized electrons were scattered on a highly polarized 3He gas target. The scattered electrons were detected with a high-resolution magnetic spectrometer, and the ejected neutrons with a dedicated neutron detector composed of scintillator bars. To reduce systematic errors data were taken for four different target polarization orientations allowing the determination of GEn/GMn from a double ratio. We find mu_n GEn/GMn = 0.250 +/- 0.058(stat.) +/- 0.017 (sys.).

Abstract

During therapeutic treatment with heavy ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, an accurate prediction on the fluences of these secondary fragments is necessary. Nowadays, a very limited set of double di ffential carbon fragmentation cross sections are being measured in the energy range used in hadrontherapy (40 to 400 MeV/u). Therefore, new measurements are performed to determine the double di ffential cross section of carbon on di erent thin targets. This work describes the experimental results of an experiment performed on May 2011 at GANIL. The double di ffential cross sections and the angular distributions of secondary fragments produced in the 12C fragmentation at 95 MeV/u on thin targets (C, CH2, Al, Al2O3, Ti and PMMA) have been measured. The experimental setup will be precisely described, the systematic error study will be explained and all the experimental data will be presented., Comment: Submitted to PRC

Abstract

During therapeutic treatment with heavier ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, the accuracy must be higher than ($\pm$3% and$\pm$1 mm). Therefore, measurements are performed to determine the double differential cross section for different reactions. In this paper, the analysis of data from 12C +12C reactions at 95 MeV/u are presented. The emitted particles are detected with \DeltaEthin-\DeltaEthick-E telescopes made of a stack of two silicon detectors and a CsI crystal. Two different methods are used to identify the particles. One is based on graphical cuts onto the \DeltaE-E maps, the second is based on the so-called KaliVeda method using a functional description of \DeltaE versus E. The results of the two methods will be presented in this paper as well as the comparison between both.

Abstract

The MoniDiam project is part of the French national collaboration CLaRyS (Contrôle en Ligne de l’hAdronthérapie par RaYonnements Secondaires) for on-line monitoring of hadron therapy. It relies on the imaging of nuclear reaction products that is related to the ion range. The goal here is to provide large area beam detectors with a high detection efficiency for carbon or proton beams giving time and position measurement at 100 MHz count rates (beam tagging hodoscope). High radiation hardness and intrinsic electronic properties make diamonds reliable and very fast detectors with a good signal to noise ratio. Commercial Chemical Vapor Deposited (CVD) poly-crystalline, heteroepitaxial and monocrystalline diamonds were studied. Their applicability as a particle detector was investigated using α and β radioactive sources, 95 MeV/u carbon ion beams at GANIL and 8.5 keV X-ray photon bunches from ESRF. This facility offers the unique capability of providing a focused (~1 μm) beam in bunches of 100 ps duration, with an almost uniform energy deposition in the irradiated detector volume, therefore mimicking the interaction of single ions. A signal rise time resolution ranging from 20 to 90 ps rms and an energy resolution of 7 to 9% were measured using diamonds with aluminum disk shaped surface metallization. This enabled us to conclude that polycrystalline CVD diamond detectors are good candidates for our beam tagging hodoscope development. Recently, double-side stripped metallized diamonds were tested using the XBIC (X Rays Beam Induced Current) set-up of the ID21 beamline at ESRF which permits us to evaluate the capability of diamond to be used as position sensitive detector. The final detector will consist in a mosaic arrangement of double-side stripped diamond sensors read out by a dedicated fast-integrated electronics of several hundreds of channels.

Proton imaging can be seen as a powerful technique for on-line monitoring of ion range during carbon ion therapy irradiation. The protons detection technique uses, as three-dimensional tracking system, a set of CMOS sensor planes. A simulation toolkit based on GEANT4 and ROOT is presented including detector response and reconstruction algorithm.

Abstract

International audience; Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is at present one of the major techniques for non-invasive diagnostics in nuclear medicine. Clinical routine is mostly based on collimated cameras, originally proposed by Anger. Due to the presence of mechanical collimation, detection effciency and energy acceptance are limited by the system geometrical features. In order to overcome these limitations, the application of Compton cameras for SPECT is being investigated for several years. We propose in this study to compare a commercial Anger device, the GE Healtcare Infinia system, and the Compton camera prototype under development by our collaboration, through Monte Carlo simulations (GATE v7.1 and Geant4 9.6 respectively). Given the possible introduction of new radio-emitters at higher energiesintrinsically allowed by the Compton camera detection principle, the detectors are exposed to point-like sources at increasing primary gamma energies, from actual isotopes already proposed for SPECT applications. The detector performances are studied in terms of radial event distribution, detection effciency and final image, obtained by gamma transmission analysis for the Anger system, and with an iterative LM-MLEM algorithm for the Compton reconstruction. The Compton camera prototype is also characterized in terms of rate of random coincidences and at different energy resolutions. Although the rate of random coincidences appears to be close to 50% at clinical source activities, preliminaryresults show for the Compton camera a detection effciency increased by a factor greater than an order of magnitude, associated with an enhanced spatial resolution for energies beyond 500 keV. We discuss then the proven advantages of Compton camera application with particular focus on dose delivered to the patient, examination time and spatial uncertainties.

International audience; A detailed knowledge of the light ions interaction processes with matter is of great interest in basic and applied physics. As an example, particle therapy and space radioprotection require highly accurate fragmentation cross-section measurements to develop shielding materials and estimate acute and late health risks for manned missions in space and for treatment planning in particle therapy. The Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy experiment at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion research (GSI) was designed and built by an international collaboration from France, Germany, Italy, and Spain for studying the collisions of a C12 ion beam with thin targets. The collaboration's main purpose is to provide the double-differential cross-section measurement of carbon-ion fragmentation at energies that are relevant for both tumor therapy and space radiation protection applications. Fragmentation cross sections of light ions impinging on a wide range of thin targets are also essential to validate the nuclear models implemented in MC simulations that, in such an energy range, fail to reproduce the data with the required accuracy. This paper presents the single differential carbon-ion fragmentation cross sections on a thin gold target, measured as a function of the fragment angle and kinetic energy in the forward angular region (θ≲6∘), aiming to provide useful data for the benchmarking of the simulation softwares used in light ions fragmentation applications. The C12 ions used in the measurement were accelerated at the energy of 400 MeV/nucleon by the SIS (heavy ion synchrotron) GSI facility.

Abstract

International audience; The MoniDiam project of the LPSC laboratory is part of the French national collaboration CLaRyS for the on-line monitoring of hadron therapy. It relies on the imaging of nuclear reaction products that is related to the ion range. The goal here is to provide large area detectors with a high detection efficiency for carbon or proton beams giving time and position measurement at count rates greater than 100 MHz (beam tagging hodoscope). High radiation hardness and intrinsic electronic properties make diamonds reliable and very fast detectors with a good signal to noise ratio. Commercial Chemical Vapor Deposited (CVD) diamonds were studied starting with plasma etch thinning and contact metallization done at the LPSC laboratory. Their applicability as particle detector was investigated using α and β radioactive sources, 95 MeV/u carbon beams and short-bunched 8.5 keV photons from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). This facility offers unique capability of highly focused beams. The energy deposition is uniform in the irradiated detector volume. It permits us to mimic the interaction of single ion beams. A time resolution ranging from 20 ps up to 40 ps and an energy resolution ranging from 7 % up to 10% were measured. It permitted us to conclude that polycrystalline CVD diamond detectors are good candidates for our beam tagging hodoscope development. The final detector will consist in a ~15×15 cm2 mosaic arrangement of stripped diamond sensors read by a dedicated integrated fast read-out electronics (~1800 channels).

Abstract

National audience; In ion beam therapy, the increased energy deposition of ions towards the finite range in tissue (Bragg peak) allows a precise dose delivery.With the aim of optimizing the ion treatment effectiveness, a strict range monitoring is mandatory: different solutions have been explored, but an online treatment check is still a challenge.The detection of the prompt-gammas (PG) emitted during treatments has proven its potential in the ion range control in real time (Min et al 2006, Testa et al 2008). The falloff of the PG profile (1D distribution along the beam direction) can be measured with millimetrical precision and correlated to the dose distribution thanks to collimated cameras. Compton cameras are also under study to bring 2D – 3D information on PG distributions. Moreover, the application of the Compton camera in the nuclear medicine field, namely for Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT).The development of two prototypes is ongoing in France thanks to the collaboration of five institutions: IPNL (Lyon), CREATIS (Lyon), LPC (Clermont-Ferrand), CPPM (Marseille) and LPSC (Grenoble).The collimated camera design consists of a multi-slit collimator and a segmented absorber made up of 96 BGO streaked blocks, with a position reading pitch of 4 mm in both directions. The same absorber is employed for the Compton camera prototype, together with a stack of 7 double-sided silicon strip detectors (1.41 mm pitch) used as scatter.The use of Time-Of-Flight technique is foreseen for both prototypes in order to maximize the signal (PG) to background (neutron) ratio. A beam tagging hodoscope is then under construction, consisting of two planes of 2 x 128 perpendicular scintillating fibers, read by 64-channel photomultipliers.The three detector components are being tested in the different partner institutions.This contribution will present an overview of the status and perspectives of emission imaging techniques carried out by the collaboration.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose:The purpose of this study was to experimentally assess the possibility to monitor carbon ion range variations—due to tumor shift and/or elongation or shrinking—using prompt-gamma (PG) emission with inhomogeneous phantoms. Such a study is related to the development of PG monitoring techniques to be used in a carbon ion therapy context.Methods:A 95 MeV/u carbon ion beam was used to irradiate phantoms with a variable density along the ion path to mimic the presence of bone and lung in homogeneous humanlike tissue. PG profiles were obtained after a longitudinal scan of the phantoms. A setup comprising a narrow single-slit collimator and two detectors placed at 90° with respect to the beam axis was used. The time of flight technique was applied to allow the selection between PG and background events.Results:Using the positions at 50% entrance and 50% falloff of the PG profiles, a quantity called prompt-gamma profile length (PGPL) is defined. It is possible to observe shifts in the PGPL when there are absolute ion range shifts as small as 1–2 mm. Quantitatively, for an ion range shift of −1.33 ± 0.46 mm (insertion of a Teflon slab), a PGPL difference of −1.93 ± 0.58 mm and −1.84 ± 1.27 mm is obtained using a BaF2 and a NaI(Tl) detector, respectively. In turn, when an ion range shift of 4.59 ± 0.42 mm (insertion of a lung-equivalent material slab) is considered, the difference is of 4.10 ± 0.54 and 4.39 ± 0.80 mm for the same detectors.Conclusions:Herein, experimental evidence of the usefulness of employing PG to monitor carbon ion range using inhomogeneous phantoms is presented. Considering the homogeneous phantom as reference, the results show that the information provided by the PG emission allows for detecting ion range shifts as small as 1–2 mm. When considering the expected PG emission from an energy slice in a carbon ion therapy scenario, the experimental setup would allow to retrieve the same PGPL as the high statistics of the full experimental dataset in 58% of the times. However, this success rate increases to 93% when using a better optimized setup by means of Monte Carlo simulations.

The achievable precision is of the order of the millimeter for a single spot in proton pencil beam scanning. Collimated gamma cameras have been developed, that are close to clinical application. The Compton cameras are also under development in various laboratories. Time of flight enables the reduction of the background due to other prompt radiations.

National audience; La surveillance du dépôt de la dose durant les traitements par hadronthérapie carbone est un point clé de l'assurance qualité de ces traitements. De récentes études ont démontré qu'un contrôle du parcours des ions - avec une résolution millimétrique- est possible, à l'échelle de l'irradiation d'un 'spot', dans des cibles homogènes, en utilisant la détection des rayonnements secondaires (gamma et protons). Cette communication a pour but de présenter nos derniers résultats, obtenus expérimentalement et par simulation Monte-Carlo. Le principe de la technique d'imagerie de vertex consiste à imager les protons secondaires, créés durant des réactions nucléaires dans le patient, et qui s'en échappent. L'interaction de la trajectoire de ces protons avec celle de l'ion incident permet d'obtenir une bonne estimation du point d'interaction appelé vertex. Il a été montré que la distribution spatiale des vertex est corrélée au dépôt de dose. Nous avons réalisé un système de trajectographie des protons pour réaliser une étude expérimentale. Plusieurs expériences ont été réalisées, en particulier au centre de carbone-thérapie HIT (Heidelberg), durant lesquelles des cibles en PMMA ont été irradiées avec des faisceaux thérapeutiques. Nos résultats expérimentaux montrent une corrélation entre le parcours des ions et les distributions des vertex. De plus, ces distributions sont en bon accord avec celles simulées. L'influence de la géométrie du détecteur a ensuite été étudiée pour maximiser la résolution de la technique. Finalement, des résultats expérimentaux en cibles hétérogènes ont été obtenus et seront discutés.

Abstract

National audience; One of the advantages of hadrontherapy with respect to conventional radiotherapy is the fact that the ions deposit a large quantity of their dose at the end of their path in the Bragg peak, which allows a maximization of the dose applied to the tumor and a minimization of the dose in healthy tissues. The lateral dose distribution is also quite narrow. Another advantage is the higher relative biological effectiveness. Due to the sharp falloff, one of the major issues for quality control during the treatment with ion beams is the control of the Bragg peak position and its conformation to the tumor volume. A mispositioning would either lead to an over-dosage of healthy tissue and/or an under-dosage in the target volume. Since no primary radiation is emerging from the patient during treatment, secondary radiation is used for in vivo monitoring purposes. The secondary radiation needs to have a weak interaction probability inside the patient to reach external detectors and it needs to be correlated to the primary beam dose distribution. This information on electromagnetic energy distribution (the LET) can be extracted from nuclear interactions. Several types of secondary radiations are being investigated in the LabEx PRIMES: (i) the detection of the two 511 keV gammas following a beta+ decay via a PET scanner, (ii) prompt secondary radiation following inelastic nuclear interactions, either prompt gamma rays via a collimated gamma or Compton camera, or light charged particles via second proton vertex imaging. Another quality assurance issue prior to the irradiation is under investigation in the LabEx: proton radiography and computed tomography (CT). This could improve proton therapy compared to current clinical practice since it could reduce the uncertainty of the proton therapy planning due to the lack of accuracy in the proton stopping power of tissues computed from photon CT images. We will review those different techniques under study in the frame of the WP1 of the LabEx PRIMES to setup a better online control of the beam range during therapy.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose: The utilization of protons and carbon ions for radiotherapy purposes provides high conformity and increased biological effectiveness. In order to fully benefit from the advantages, a precise beam range monitoring in real time is vital. The detection of prompt gammas with a collimated scintillating detector makes it possible to locate the Bragg peak position during proton or carbon ion irradiation. Accurate Monte Carlo simulations are essential both for the further development of an optimized detection array and for the accurate estimation of the applicability of the system in clinical conditions. Purpose of the current work is to assess and improve the performance of the Geant4 toolkit in the description of currently available prompt-gamma data.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose: Hadrontherapy is an innovative radiotherapy modality that allows for high tumour conformality due to the characteristic Bragg peak in the dose-depth profile. However, the high precision involved also makes the monitoring of dose delivery more critical. Currently, only positron emission tomography is clinically implemented but other techniques may also provide clinically-relevant information, namely the ones relying on prompt-radiation emission. This work addresses the research and development (R&D) of a TOFbased multi-slit collimated camera, one of the possible devices that use prompt-radiation information to monitor dose delivery in particular for proton and carbon ion treatments. This camera involves the detection of prompt gammas emitted during the treatment along the beam axis, for which the correlation with the range of particles in matter has been extensively demonstrated.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of irradiation monitoring during a treatment in ion therapy is to control in real time the agreement between the delivered dose and the planned treatment. In fact, the discrepancies might come from uncertainties such as the positioning or the anatomical changes of the patient can lead to ion-range variations of a few millimeters. Several devices are under development over the world to detect secondary radiations, which are correlated to the dose deposited by incident ions. Compton cameras are in particular investigated for their potential high efficiency. The present work aims at discussing the clinical applicability of a Compton camera design by means of Monte Carlo simulations validated against measurements of single and coincidence rates.

Abstract

International audience; Purpose: In the framework of the 12C based hadrontherapy, the monitoring of the ion range is a crucial issue for the quality control of the treatments. An emerging method to perform a real-time monitoring exploits secondary charged particle radiation. Simulations have shown that the number of emerging protons is enough to perform ion-range monitoring in homogeneous targets on a pencil-beam basis operating in active mode. The variation of vertex distributions have been recently confirmed by an experiment performed with clinical beam and a PMMA target. The present study aims at comparing simulations and measurements obtained with homogeneous and heterogeneous target.
