With the transition to Logistics 4.0, the increasing demand for autonomous mobile robots (AMR) in logistics has amplified the complexity of fleet control in dynamic environments. Reinforcement learning (RL), particularly decentralized RL algorithms, has emerged as a potential solution given its ability to learn in uncertain terrains. While discrete RL structures have shown merit, their adaptability in logistics remains questionable due to their inherent limitations. This paper presents a comparative analysis of continuous RL algorithms - Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) - in the context of controlling a Turtlebot3 within a warehouse scenario. Our findings reveal A2C as the frontrunner in terms of success rate and training time, while DDPG excels step minimization while PPO distinguishes itself primarily through its relatively short training duration. This study underscores the potential of continuous RL algorithms, especially A2C, in the future of AMR fleet management in logistics. In diesem Beitrag wird eine vergleichende Analyse kontinuierlicher RL-Algorithmen - Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C), Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) und Prox-imal Policy Optimization (PPO) - im Kontext der Steuerung eines Turtlebot3 in einem Lagerszenario vorgestellt. Unsere Ergebnisse zeigen A2C als Spitzenreiter in Bezug auf Erfolgsrate und Trainingszeit, während DDPG bei der Minimierung der Episodenlänge punktet und PPO lediglich mit einer geringen Trainingsdauer aufwarten kann. Diese Studie unterstreicht das Potenzial von kontinuierlichen RL-Algorithmen, insbesondere A2C, für die Zukunft des AMR-Flottenmanagements in der Logistik, wobei gerade im Bereich des Finetunings der Algorithmen noch viel Arbeit zu tun ist.

This paper introduces a novel approach to benchmarking Indoor Localization Systems (ILS) for mobile robots in warehouse and manufacturing contexts. The study focuses on diverse localization technologies commonly used in mobile robotics and implements transparent and comparable performance metrics, an automated experimental procedure, as well as an intuitive performance visualization approach. Experiments were conducted using a custom-built robot equipped with various sensors, including LiDAR, Ultra-Wideband (UWB), and vision systems. A process for systematically analyzing the impact of environmental factors such as lighting, reflectivity, and obstacles on localization performance is proposed. The results provide insights into system robustness and accuracy under different conditions. The study enables more efficient experimental analysis of sensor fusion and optimization strategies for achieving optimal performance and offers a workflow to efficiently investigate sensor fusion concepts using real data., In diesem Beitrag wird ein neuartiger Ansatz zum Benchmarking von Indoor-Lokalisierungssystemen (ILS) für mobile Roboter in Lager- und Produktion-sumgebungen vorgestellt. Die Studie konzentriert sich auf verschiedene Lokalisierungstechnologien, die üblicherweise in der mobilen Robotik verwendet werden, und implementiert transparente und vergleichbare Leistungsmetriken, ein automatisiertes Experimentierverfahren und einen intuitiven Ansatz zur Leistungsvisualisierung. Die Experimente wurden mit einem speziell angefertigten Roboter durchgeführt, der mit verschiedenen Sensoren ausgestattet war, darunter LiDAR-, UWB- und Vision-Systeme. Es wird eine Methode vorgeschlagen, um die Auswirkungen von Umgebungsfaktoren wie Beleuchtung, Reflektivität und Hindernisse auf die Lokalisierungsleistung systematisch zu analysieren. Mobile robots operating on sidewalks promise to automate various tasks of public life. At present, however, such robots are still a relatively new and rarely encountered technology. In Germany, these robots are operated in the context of isolated pilot tests. There are only a few commercial operators and just as few publicly accessible documented robot developments and test operations by research institutions. Yet it is research in a real-world setting that is essential for the development and validation of systems and algorithms. In this contribution, we present a research robot platform for use on sidewalks in public space: Using delivery robots as a practical example, a mobile robot was developed, equipped for real-world research, and approved for manual and automated deployment on streets and sidewalks in the German city of Lauenburg/Elbe. This paper presents the development process adapted from common automotive technical standards, describes the identified requirements for the robot, the derived robot concept, and finally its implementation in an approved prototype delivery robot. In particular, we discuss remaining limitations and present extensive lessons learned. In this way, we not only comprehensively present the current requirements for such robots and how to implemented them, but also support further research in this relevant field

Various applications leverage location data to increase transparency, efficiency, and safety in intralogistics. There are several properties of location data, such as the data's degrees of freedom, system latency, update rate, or accuracy. To select a suitable indoor localization system, corresponding data requirements must be derived by analyzing the considered application. To date, the dependencies of the system performance and location data requirements have not been satisfactorily described in the literature. Thus, no method exists to adequately derive location data requirements. For intralogistics, such a method is of particular relevance due to the high-cost sensitivity and heterogeneity of partially safety-relevant indoor localization applications. To fill this gap, a method for selecting and quantifying location data requirements for the application in intralogistics is presented in this work, creating substantial added value for warehouse managers and system integrators. The method is based on a spatial model that is built on the premise that location data is used to determine the presence or absence of an entity in a multidimensional interest space. The usage of the method is demonstrated in an exemplary case study for the application of Automated Pallet Booking.

With an expected future increase of costs for carbon emissions the logistics industry is targeting to design sustainable warehouses to reduce their carbon footprints. To do so, it is required that every aspect of a warehouse from its general design to the transport processes and technologies must be assessed in terms of its carbon footprint. In this article the carbon footprint, which can be traced back to the storage technology employed within a storage area is analysed. The approach includes surface, material, and technology-related data to calculate the carbon footprint of a logistics concept. Firstly, different dimensions of storage technology carbon footprints are identified. A comprehen-sive model is provided to calculate the carbon footprint of alternative storage technologies in a warehouse. The model is applied in a case study with actual data from a warehouse planning project in the German production industry comparing three alternative storage technologies for a small part storage solution. The author's find highest carbon footprint in the application of an autonomous guided vehicle shelving system compared to automatic storage and retrieval system and manual storage solution using Kanban racks.

Für die Kurzstudie zur Lokalisierung von mobilen Robotersystemen wurden Prozesse und Technologien untersucht, die in Zukunft vermehrt im Hochbau zum Einsatz kommen. Die praxisnahen Analysen zeigten nicht nur unterschiedliche Erkenntnisse zu verschiedenen Lasermessgeräten, auch konnten Einsichten zur Präzision Verortung von mobilen Robotern gewonnen werden. Durch die Untersuchung der Sensortechnologien war es zudem möglich, Unterschiede zu Lokalisierungsgenauigkeiten festzuhalten. To ensure safe operation of mobile robots in public spaces, the robots must be able to detect obstacles and identify non-traversable ground. However, there are relatively few suitable methods for mobile robots in urban environments available and equally few empirical data on such applications. This contribution identifies requirements for such systems, designs meaningful test scenarios, and evaluates an exemplary approach using a mobile robot platform with depth sensors. It is found that the method is suitable in principle, but that different roadway elements pose a challenge to detection. Corrupted sensor data due to tilting movements or overexposure also negatively affect the quality of obstacle detection., Um einen sicheren Betrieb von mobilen Robotern im öffentlichen Raum zu gewährleisten, müssen Roboter in der Lage sein, Hindernisse zu erkennen und unbefahrbare Bodenbereiche zu identifizieren. In diesem Beitrag werden Anforderungen an solche Systeme identifiziert, aussagekräftige Testszenarien entworfen und ein beispielhafter Ansatz anhand eines mobilen Roboters mit Tiefensensoren evaluiert. Es wird festgestellt, dass diese Methode prinzipiell geeignet ist, jedoch verschiedene Fahrbahnelemente eine Herausforderung für die Erkennung darstellen. Fehlerhafte Sensordaten durch Kippbewegungen oder Überbelichtungen beeinträchtigen ebenfalls die Qualität der Hinderniserkennung.

Indoor-Lokalisierungssysteme (IPSs) können einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Analyse und Optimierung von innerbetrieblichen Transportprozessen leisten. Das übergeordnete Ziel dieser Arbeit besteht darin, zu untersuchen, wie Lokalisierungsdaten zur Analyse des Betriebs von Flurförderzeugen in Lagern genutzt werden können. Dies wird durch die Vorstellung eines Systemkonzeptes zur Analyse des Betriebs von Flurförderzeugen erreicht, welches ausschließlich die Verfügbarkeit von Positionsdaten voraussetzt. Das Konzept besteht aus einem Signalverarbeitungsschemas zur Ableitung kinematischer Daten und drei Analysemethoden – Monitoring, Flächenanalyse und Bewegungsanalyse. Schemen zur Signalverarbeitung und zur Erkennung von Bewegungsereignissen wurden entwickelt und als Teil der TrOpLocer-App (Truck Operation Localization Analyzer-Application) zur Erfassung, Darstellung und Verarbeitung von Lokalisierungsdaten gemäß dem vorgestellten Systemkonzept implementiert. Der Quellcode der TrOpLocer-App ist frei verfügbar über GitLab bereitgestellt [RS21]. Es wurden verschiedene Filteralgorithmen als Teil des Signalverarbeitungsschemas untersucht, von denen ein Tiefpass-Butterworth-Filter in statischen Experimenten die besten Ergebnisse gezeigt hat. Eine Validierung des Bewegungserkennungsschemas zeigt eine gute Detektionsqualität für unterschiedliche Ereignisse in einem praxisnahen Bewegungsexperiment., Indoor positioning systems (IPSs) can make an important contribution to the analysis and optimization of internal transport processes. The overall aim of this work is to examine how position data can be used to analyze the operation of industrial trucks in warehouses. This is achieved by presenting a concept for the analysis of industrial truck operations based merely on position data. The concept consists of a signal processing scheme to derive kinematic data and three analysis methods – Monitoring, Area analysis, and Motion analysis. Schemes for the signal processing and detection of motion events were developed and implemented as part of the TrOpLocerApp (Truck Operation Localization Analyzer-Application) for recording, displaying, and processing position data, according to the proposed system concept. The TrOpLocer-App source code is published under an open-source license and is publicly available on GitLab [RS21]. Different filter algorithms were examined, as part of the signal processing scheme, from which the low pass Butterworth filter has shown the best results in static experiments. Validation of the motion detection scheme shows good detection quality for distinct events in a realistic movement experiment.

Fahrerlose Transportfahrzeuge nehmen durch ihre Effizienz in der Industrie einen immer größeren Stellenwert ein. Hieraus resultiert eine erhöhte Nachfrage bei den Produzenten. Um diese zu bedienen, ist es notwendig die Fertigungsprozesse zu optimieren. Eine Möglichkeit bietet hierbei die Kalibrierung, da heutzutage jedes Fahrzeug weitgehend einzeln und manuell eingestellt werden muss. Eine Optimierung dieses Prozessschritts würde durch die Skaleneffekte einen erheblichen Beitrag zur Effizienzsteigerung beitragen. Dieser Artikel analysiert daher mithilfe einer Literaturrecherche die verschiedenen Arten von Kalibrierung und inwieweit diese automatisiert werden können. Ergänzend dazu wird untersucht, ob nicht nur Einzelfahrzeuge kalibriert werden können, sondern dies gleichzeitig für eine gesamte Flotte durchgeführt werden kann., Automated Guided Vehicles are becoming more and more important in the industry due to their efficiency. This results in an increased demand on the producers’ side. In order to serve this demand it is necessary to optimise the production processes. One possibility is calibration, since nowadays each vehicle must be adjusted individually. An optimisation of this process step would make a considerable contribution to increase the efficiency through economies of scale. This article therefore analyses the different types of calibration and the extent to which they can be automated. In addition it is researched whether it is not only possible to calibrate single vehicles, but to do this simultaneously for an entire fleet.
