Abstract

We have proposed a switchable mode-locked fiber laser by means of carbon nanotube saturable absorber and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The single-wavelength mode-locking operation can be switched between 1549.5 and 1559.5 nm, respectively, which correspond to the central wavelengths of two FBGs. With the appropriate setting of polarization controller, the stable dual-wavelength operation can be achieved due to the high stability of saturable absorber based on carbon nanotubes. Our method provides a simple, stable, low-cost, dual-wavelength ultrafast-pulsed source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: By self-consistently solving Schrödinger and Poisson equations, an extremely high two-dimensional electron-gas (2DEG) sheet density of 1.01×1014cm−2 is calculated in a novel InN-based InxGa1−xN/InN heterostructure field-effect transistor with an In content of x=0.1 and a doping level of Nd=1×1019cm−3 in the InxGa1−xN barrier layer. It is increased by almost one order of magnitude as compared to ∼1×1013cm−2 obtained in a conventional GaN-based Al0.2Ga0.8N/GaN heterostructure. With increasing In content of the InxGa1−xN barrier from x=0.05 to 0.15, the 2DEG sheet density decreases from 1.14×1014cm−2 to 0.91×1014cm−2 due to the decreased of polarization charges and the reduced conduction band offset. And the 2DEG density increases slightly with increasing doping level of the InxGa1−xN barrier. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

47. The Effect of Molecular Geometry on Boundary Layer Lubrication

Abstract

AbstractSimulation studies of the friction between layers of dialkyl surfactants have been performed using a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics method. The model layers at a temperature of 298 K and a normal pressure of 210 MPa are sheared at a relative velocity of 1 ms−1. The friction coefficient has been studied as a function of the molecular geometry by simulating bilayers of C10C18(asymmetrical) and C18C18and C10C10(symmetrical) surfactants. In all cases the hydrocarbon chains are attached to a positively charged dimethylammonium head-group which interacts with a negatively charged surface. At a head-group area of 50 Å2per molecule, the friction between the layers of asymmetrical surfactants is greater than that between layers of symmetrical surfactants at approximately the same normal pressure. At 77 Å2the friction between the C18C10layers remains higher than that of the C18C18layers but is now lower than that of the C10C10, where the surface structure is highly disordered and the two layers are separated by only 15.8 Å. The friction between the layers correlates well with the amount of layer overlap as defined by the common area under the chain density profiles. These observation, which are in broad aggreement with the experimental measurement on similar dichain surfactants are rationalised in terms of the translational, orientational and conformational structures of the layers.

48. Isolation of the epidermal growth factor from the shrew submaxillary gland

Abstract

The epidermal growth factor (EGF) from the submaxillary glands of the Chinese Shrew ( Suncus murinus) is purified to apparent homogeneity by using a sequence of four chromatographic steps, viz. gel filtration on Sephacryl S-200, affinity chromatography on immobilized Ni, hydrophobic interaction on phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B and reverse-phase HPLC. An 800-fold increase in specific activity and an overal recovery of 46% were achieved. The most effective step in its purification is the successful use of immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography (IMAC). This method was very selective, reproducible and requires a minimum of sample pre-treatment prior to chromatography.
