5. Quieter Pavement Research: Concrete Pavement Tire Noise

- Abstract
This research report presents the results of tire/pavement noise measurements performed on concrete pavements as a part of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Quieter Pavement Research (QPR) study to investigate tire/pavement noise characteristics on concrete pavements and bridge decks. The study included a total of 120 pavement sections at 47 different sites on various state highways throughout California. Most of the sites (36) were divided into three sections each for measurement and evaluation of tire/pavement noise using the On-board Sound Intensity (OBSI) method, while the other sites had one or two test sections. The evaluation included visual observation of pavement surface condition and texture type, some of which was performed from a moving vehicle, as no traffic closures were used for this research. The following five texture types were evaluated, with the number of sections shown in parentheses: burlap drag (37), diamond ground (33), diamond grooved (19), longitudinally broomed (10), and longitudinally tined (21). The report explains the data collection and data reduction procedures, data analysis, and discussion of the results. Overall, the longitudinally broomed texture type was found to be the quietest, although this texture had a small data sample, followed by diamond grooved and diamond ground. Burlap drag was as quiet as diamond ground, and longitudinally tined was the loudest. Differences in mean OBSI levels were small between all types, while differences of up to 5 dB(A) were measured within a given texture type. The range of OBSI levels across all sections during the two years was 99.4 to 107.3 dB(A). In addition to texture, the measured OBSI levels include the effects of joint slap, faulting and sealant, if they were present.

This document presents a survey performed in 2006 of the materials and procedures used to produce asphalt mixes with an open aggregate structure in the United States and in Europe. In the U.S. these types of materials are known as “open-graded mixes” and they are utilized mostly to improve permeability and, consequently, wet-weather friction, which is related to the frequency of traffic accidents. In Europe, these materials are known as “porous asphalt mixes” and they are used for the same reasons as in the U.S., as well as to lessen tire/pavement noise. In general, European porous mixes have higher air-void contents than those in the U.S., ranging between 20 and 25 percent; open-graded mixes in the U.S. generally have air-void contents of less than 20 percent. European countries have specifications for horizontal and vertical permeabilities, while there are no permeability specifications in the U.S. However in both Europe and the U.S., a maximum particle loss of 50 percent from the LA abrasion test is specified. In Europe, the tensile strength ratio for porous mixes is specified as at least 50 percent; in the U.S. however, only a few states specify a tensile strength ratio. The required value is usually above 80 percent for those states that have a tensile strength ratio specification.

Peer-to-peer protocols play an increasingly instrumental role in Internet content distribution. It is therefore important to gain a complete understanding of how these protocols behave in practice and how their operating parameters affect overall system performance. This paper presents the first detailed experimental investigation of the peer selection strategy in the popular BitTorrent protocol. By observing more than 40 nodes in instrumented private torrents, we validate three protocol properties that, though believed to hold, have not been previously demonstrated experimentally: the clustering of similar-bandwidth peers, the effectiveness of BitTorrent's sharing incentives, and the peers' high uplink utilization. In addition, we observe that BitTorrent's modified choking algorithmin seed state provides uniform service to all peers, and that an underprovisioned initial seed leads to absence of peer clustering and less effective sharing incentives. Based on our results, we provide guidelines for seed provisioning by content providers, and discuss a tracker protocol extension that addresses an identified limitation of the protocol. © Copyright 2007 ACM.

8. Acoustical Absorption of Open-Graded, Gap-Graded, and Dense-Graded Asphalt Pavements

- Abstract
This report presents results of acoustical absorption measured on asphalt pavement samples. The tests were performed on 76 highway pavement sections and characterized the acoustical absorption at the center of the lane and under one of the wheelpaths (nontrafficked and trafficked areas of the lane, respectively). This document presents the absorption coefficients and resonance frequencies for different types of pavements, an analysis of the measured absorption coefficients, and the correlation of the absorption coefficients with measured tire/pavement noise levels. The acoustical absorption of the asphalt cores was measured with an impedance tube that allowed measurement between 200 and 1,700 Hz. The pavement in the study consists of mostly four types of asphalt concrete: dense graded, open graded, rubberized open graded, and gap graded. The study also included a limited number of sections with other asphalt mixes. The study confirmed that greater acoustical absorption is obtained from pavements with high air-void content. It showed that the open-graded mixes have higher absorption values than gap- and dense-graded mixes. For both the center and wheelpath, the open-graded mixes showed an average absorption coefficient of about 0.20; this parameter for gap- and dense-graded mixes was approximately 0.04. Average absorption is an increasingly better predictor of tire/pavement noise levels at higher frequencies, with a correlation coefficient of 66 percent at 1,600 Hz.

25 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas, Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele., This work was funded by a grant (EADB) from the EU Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research. This is compounded by the fact that the tumor is highly dynamic and complex environment composed of a plurality of cell types and extracellular matrix. Since glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production is altered in many diseases (or pathologies), NPs bearing GAG moieties on the surface may confer some unique advantages in interrogating the tumor microenvironment. In order to explore this premise, in the study reported here poly-lactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) NPs in the range of 100–150 nm bearing various proteoglycans were synthesized by a single-step nanoprecipitation and characterized. The surface functionalization of the NPs with GAG moieties was verified using zeta potential measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To establish these GAG-bearing NPs as carriers of therapeutics, cellular toxicity assays were undertaken in lung epithelial adenocarcinoma (A549) cells, human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC), and renal proximal tubular epithelial cells. In general NPs were well tolerated over a wide concentration range (100–600 µg/mL) by all cell types and were taken up to appreciable extents without any adverse cell response in A549 cells and HPMEC. Further, GAG-functionalized PLGA NPs were taken up to different extents in A459 cells and HPMEC. In both cell systems, the uptake of heparin-modified NPs was diminished by 50%–65% in comparison to that of unmodified PLGA. Interestingly, the uptake of chondroitin sulfate NPs was the highest in both cell systems with 40%–60% higher uptake when compared with that of PLGA, and this represented an almost twofold difference over heparin-modified NPs. Optimistic concurrency control, or OCC, can achieve excellent performance on uncontended workloads for main-memory transactional databases. Contention causes OCC's performance to degrade, however, and recent concurrency control designs, such as hybrid OCC/locking systems and variations on multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), have claimed to outperform the best OCC systems. We evaluate several concurrency control designs under varying contention and varying workloads, including TPCC, and find that implementation choices unrelated to concurrency control may explain much of OCC's previously-reported degradation. When these implementation choices are made sensibly, OCC performance does not collapse on high-contention TPC-C. We also present two optimization techniques, commit-time updates and timestamp splitting, that can dramatically improve the highcontention performance of both OCC and MVCC. Though these techniques are known, we apply them in a new context and highlight their potency: when combined, they lead to performance gains of 3:4 for MVCC and 3:6 for OCC in a TPC-C workload.

The Lower Cretaceous Upper Mannville Formation in West- Central Alberta has been intensively penetrated by wells targeting deeper reservoirs during the last decades. Production and well log data in this area suggest that significant volumes of gas are still present in both conventional and tight reservoirs of this formation. The Upper Mannville reservoirs in West-Central Alberta consist of fluvial sandstones filling incised valleys. The valley infills are made up of arkosic sandstones with a complex mineralogy. The matrix of these sandstones is made up of various amounts of quartz, feldspars, clay minerals and rock fragments. They were subjected to a complex diagenetic history and the resulting paragenesis influenced the present reservoir properties. Consequently, heterogeneities in the petrophysical properties result in significant exploration risks and production issues. We present in this paper results of a diagenetic study, performed within a well constrained stratigraphic framework, that aims at understanding the impact of mineralogy and diagenesis on reservoir quality evolution. Seventy one core samples from eight wells were collected to perform a petrographic analysis, and to propose a paragenetic sequence. Four main diagenetic events were identified that occurred during burial: – clay coating around the grains; – compaction/dissolution of matrix grains; – quartz and feldspars dissolution that initiated smectite-illite transformation and kaolinisation; – carbonate cementation in the remaining pore space. Clay minerals content and carbonate cementation are the main factors that altered the reservoir quality of these sandstones. The Smectite-Illite transformation was initiated after potassium was released in the formation fluids due to K-feldspars dissolution. This transformation proportionally increased with temperature during burial. Carbonate cementation occured during the uplift phase of the basin, intensively plugging the pore space where the clay content is reduced. Additional SEM and XRD analyses allowed characterizing and quantifying more accurately the different mineralogical phases occluding the porous network. The characterization of both mineralogy and petrophysical properties gives useful keys to locate the diagenetic phases laterally and vertically, and to predict the petrophysical properties distribution. La Formation Mannville Supérieur du Crétacé Inférieur d’Ouest-Central Alberta a été intensivement forée les précédentes décennies par des puits visant des réservoirs plus profonds. Cependant, les données de production dans ce secteur suggèrent que des volumes significatifs de gaz soient présents dans les réservoirs tant conventionnels que non conventionnels (“tight reservoirs”) de cette formation. Les réservoirs de la Formation Mannville Supérieur d’Ouest-Central Alberta sont constitués de grès fluviatiles remplissant des vallées incisées. Ces grès présentent une minéralogie complexe, avec des quantités variables de quartz, de feldspaths, de minéraux argileux et des fragments de roche. Ils ont été soumis à une histoire diagénétique complexe et la paragenèse qui en résulte a eu un impact sur leurs propriétés réservoirs. Par conséquent, les hétérogénéités dans les propriétés réservoirs induisent des risques significatifs en termes d’exploration et de production de ces réservoirs. Nous présentons dans cet article les résultats de l’étude diagénétique, effectuée dans un cadre stratigraphique bien contraint, visant à comprendre l’impact de la minéralogie et de la diagenèse sur l’évolution de la qualité des réservoirs. Soixante et onze échantillons prélevés sur huit puits ont permis de réaliser une analyse pétrographique et proposer une séquence paragénétique. Quatre événements diagénétiques principaux ont été identifiés et sont liés à l’enfouissement du bassin : – coating d’argile autour des grains; – compaction/dissolution de grains matriciels; – dissolution partielle des grains de quartz et de feldspaths, qui ont initiés la transformation smectite-illite et kaolinisation; – cimentation carbonatée dans l’espace poreux restant. Les transformations de minéraux argileux et la cimentation carbonatée sont les facteurs principaux qui ont affecté la porosité et la perméabilité de ces grès. La transformation Smectite-Illite a été amorcée après que le potassium issu de la dissolution des feldspaths ait été libéré dans le fluide de formation. Cette transformation augmente proportionnellement avec l’enfouissement et la température. Une intense cimentation carbonatée est survenue pendant la phase de soulèvement du bassin, colmatant de façon très significative l’espace poreux là où la teneur en argile était réduite. Des analyses au Microscope Électronique à Balayage et des analyses de DRX ont permis de caractériser et d’évaluer quantitativement les différentes phases diagénétiques responsables de l’évolution de l’espace poreux. La caractérisation de la minéralogie et de l’évolution des propriétés pétrophysiques des réservoirs apportent des clés utiles pour localiser les différentes phases diagénétiques temporellement et spatialement, afin de prédire la distribution de propriétés pétrophysiques.

A greater accuracy and precision are obtained for quantifying dolomite as well as other mineral phases and calculating dolomite stoichiometry compared to the classical “Lumsden line” and previous methods. The applicability of this approach is verified on dolomite reference material (Eugui) and on Triassic (Upper Muschelkalk-Lettenkohle) carbonates from the French Jura. The approach shown here is applicable to bulk dolostones as well as to specific dolomite cements and was combined with petrographical and isotopic analyses. Upper Muschelkalk dolomites were formed during burial dolomitization under fluids characterized by increased temperature and variable isotopic composition through burial. This is clear from their Ca content in dolomites which gradually approaches an ideal stoichiometry (from 53.16% to 51.19%) through increasing dolomitization. Lettenkohle dolostones consist of near-ideal stoichiometric (51.06%Ca) and well-ordered dolomites associated with anhydrite relicts. They originated through both sabkha and burial dolomitization. This contribution gives an improved method for the characterization of different dolomite types and their distinct traits in sedimentary rocks, which allows a better evaluation of their reservoir potential. Cette étude propose une approche pour la quantification de la dolomite et le calcul de sa stoechiométrie grâce à l’utilisation de la diffraction des rayons X couplée aux affinements de maille et de Rietveld et complétée par de nombreuses données issues de la littérature. Elle permet d’obtenir une meilleure justesse et précision pour la quantification de la dolomite (et des autres phases minérales) ainsi que pour le calcul de sa stoechiométrie par rapport à l’équation de Lumsden et de méthodes antérieures. L’approche proposée est vérifiée grâce à l’analyse d’un échantillon référence de dolomite (Eugui) et appliquée à des roches carbonatées du Trias (Muschelkalk supérieur-Lettenkohle) du Jura français. Elle est combinée à une étude pétrographique et isotopique et peut être appliquée tant aux roches qu’aux ciments dolomitiques. Les dolomies du Muschelkalk supérieur se sont formées au cours d’une dolomitisation d’enfouissement associée à des fluides dont la température augmente et ayant une composition isotopique variable au cours de l’enfouissement. Outre la pétrographie, ceci est également mis en évidence par le pourcentage de Ca calculé dans les dolomites, qui atteint progressivement une stoechiométrie idéale (de 53,16 % à 51,19 %) parallèlement au développement de la dolomitisation. Les dolomites du Lettenkohle montrent une stoechiométrie proche d’une stoechiométrie idéale (51,06 % Ca), sont ordonnées et associées à de l’anhydrite. Leur formation est liée à deux étapes de dolomitisation : de type sabkha et d’enfouissement. Cette étude permet ainsi une meilleure caractérisation des différents types de dolomites dans les roches sédimentaires et par conséquent une meilleure détermination de leur potentiel en tant que réservoir.

- Abstract
Genetic discoveries of Alzheimer’s disease are the drivers of our understanding, and together with polygenetic risk stratification can contribute towards planning of feasible and efficient preventive and curative clinical trials. We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer’s disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease. © 2021, The Author(s).

38. Opportunities for optimism in contended main-memory multicore transactions

- Abstract
Optimistic concurrency control, or OCC, can achieve excellent performance on uncontended workloads for main-memory transactional databases. Contention causes OCC's performance to degrade, however, and recent concurrency control designs, such as hybrid OCC/locking systems and variations on multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), have claimed to outperform the best OCC systems. We evaluate several concurrency control designs under varying contention and varying workloads, including TPCC, and find that implementation choices unrelated to concurrency control may explain much of OCC's previously-reported degradation. When these implementation choices are made sensibly, OCC performance does not collapse on high-contention TPC-C. We also present two optimization techniques, commit-time updates and timestamp splitting, that can dramatically improve the highcontention performance of both OCC and MVCC. Though these techniques are known, we apply them in a new context and highlight their potency: when combined, they lead to performance gains of 3:4 for MVCC and 3:6 for OCC in a TPC-C workload.

Cervical swabs and first void urine (FVU) from 314 female sex workers were submitted to nucleic acid amplification by ligase chain reaction (LCx, Abbott). Concomittantly, blood samples were tested for the presence of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies using a genus-specific assay (rELISA, Medac) and species-specific test (SeroCT, Orgenics). Chlamydia trachomatis infection was detected in a total of 30 (9.6%) female sex workers by LCR. With rELISA, seroprevalences for IgG, IgM and IgA antibody to Chlamydia were 88.9%, 19.1% and 62.7%, respectively. IgG and IgA antibody prevalences against C. trachomatis (SeroCT) were 65.0% and 23.9%, respectively. In comparison to the positive LCR results obtained from cervical swab and/or FVU, the sensitivity of rELISA for Chlamydia IgG, IgA and IgM detection was 93.9%, 83.3% and 16.7%, respectively. With SeroCT, the sensitivity for C. trachomatis-specific IgG and IgA detection was 86.7% and 33.3%, respectively. The specificities of both serologic tests in comparison to LCR were very slow. C. trachomatis infection of the lower genital tract is very low. According to our results, serologic testing for Chlamydia can exclude active infection of the lower genital tract with a high reliability (aY= 95%). However, detection of C. trachomatis can only be reliably achieved by nucleic acid amplification assays. Radar mapping of thc surface of Venus shows areas of high reflectivity (low emissivity) in the Venusian highlands at altitudes between 2.5-4.75 kilometers. The origin of the radar anomalies found in the Venusian highlands remains unclear. Most explanations of the potential causes for these radar anomalies come from theoretical work. Previous studies suggest increased surface roughness or materials with higher dielectric constants as well as surface atmospheric interactions. Several possible candidates of high-dielectric materials are tellurium) ferroelectric materials, and lead or bismuth sulfides. While previous studies have been influential in determining possible sources for the Venus anomalies, only a very few hypotheses have been verified via experimentation. This work intends to experimentally constrain the source of the radar anomalies on Venus. This study proposes to investigate four possible materials that could potentially cause the high reflectivities on the surface of Venus and tests their behavior under simulated Venusian conditions.
