Search

Understanding the initial conditions of star formation requires both observational studies and theoretical works taking into account the magnetic field, which plays an important role in star formation processes. Herein, we study the young nearby dense cloud core L1521 F ($n$(H$_2$) $\sim 10^{4-6}$ cm$^{-3}$) in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. This dense core hosts a 0.2 $M_\odot$ protostar, categorized as a Very Low Luminosity Objects with complex velocity structures, particularly in the vicinity of the protostar. To trace the magnetic field within the dense core, we conducted high sensitivity submillimeter polarimetry of the dust continuum at $\lambda$= 850 $\mu$m and 450 $\mu$m using the POL-2 polarimeter situated in front of the SCUBA-2 submillimeter bolometer camera on James Clerk Maxwell Tetescope. This was compared with millimeter polarimetry taken at $\lambda$= 3.3 mm with ALMA. The magnetic field was detected at $\lambda$= 850 $\mu$m in the peripheral region, which is threaded in a north-south direction, while the central region traced at $\lambda$= 450 $\mu$m shows a magnetic field with an east-west direction, i.e., orthogonal to that of the peripheral region. Magnetic field strengths are estimated to be $\sim$70 $\mu$G and 200 $\mu$G in the peripheral- and central-regions, respectively, using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The resulting mass-to-flux ratio of 3 times larger than that of magnetically critical state for both regions indicates that L1521 F is magnetically supercritical, i.e., gravitational forces dominate over magnetic turbulence forces. Combining observational data with MHD simulations, detailed parameters of the morphological properties of this puzzling object are derived for the first time., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

We study the kinetic plasma dynamics in collisionless relativistic jets with velocity shear, by carrying out particle-in-cell simulations in the transverse plane of a jet. It is discovered that intermittent magnetic reconnections (MRs) are driven by Mushroom instability (MI), which is an important kinetic-scale plasma instability in the plasma shear-flows with relativistic bulk speed. We refer to this sequence of kinetic plasma phenomena as "MI-driven MR". The MI-driven MRs intermittently occur with moving the location of the reconnection points from the vicinity of the initial velocity-shear surface towards the center of the jet. As a consequence, the number density of high energy electrons, which are accelerated by MI-driven MRs, increases with time in the region inside the initial velocity-shear surface with accompanying the generation and subsequent amplification of magnetic fields by MI. The maximum Lorentz factor of electrons increases with initial bulk Lorentz factor of the jet. A possible relation of MI-driven MR to the bright synchrotron emission in jet-spine of active galactic nucleus jets is also discussed., 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.

Filamentary structures are recognized as a fundamental component of interstellar molecular clouds in observations by the Herschel satellite. These filaments, especially massive filaments, often extend in a direction perpendicular to the interstellar magnetic field. Furthermore, the filaments sometimes have an apparently negative temperature gradient, that is, their temperature decreases towards the center. In this paper, we study the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium state of negative-indexed polytropic gas with the magnetic field running perpendicular to the axis of the filament. The model is controlled by four parameters: center-to-surface density ratio ($\rho_c/\rho_s$), plasma $\beta$ of the surrounding gas, radius of the parent cloud $R'_0$ normalized by the scale height, and the polytropic index $N$. The steepness of the temperature gradient is represented by $N$. We found that the envelope of the column density profile becomes shallow when the temperature gradient is large. This reconciles the inconsistency between the observed profiles and those expected from the isothermal models. We compared the maximum line-mass (mass per unit length), above which there is no equilibrium, with that of the isothermal non-magnetized filament. We obtained an empirical formula to express the maximum line-mass of a magnetized polytropic filament as $\lambda_{max}\simeq\left[{\left(\lambda_{0,max}(N)/M_\odot{\rm pc^{-1}}\right)^2+\left[5.9(1.0+1.2/N)^{1/2}({\Phi_{cl}}/{1\mu {\rm G\,pc}})\right]^2}\right]^{1/2}M_\odot {\rm pc^{-1}}$, where $\lambda_{0,max}(N)$ represents the maximum line-mass of the non-magnetized filament and $\Phi_{cl}$ indicates one-half of the magnetic flux threading the filament per unit length. Although the negative-indexed polytrope makes the maximum line-mass decrease compared with that of the isothermal model, a magnetic field threading the filament increases the line-mass., Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present ALMA CO ($J$=2--1) and 1.3 mm continuum observations of the high-velocity jet associated with the FIR 6b protostar located in the Orion Molecular Cloud-2. We detect a velocity gradient along the short axis of the jet in both the red- and blue-shifted components. The position-velocity diagrams along the short axis of the red-shifted jet show a typical characteristic of a rotating cylinder. We attribute the velocity gradient in the red-shifted component to rotation of the jet. The rotation velocity ($>20\,\ \rm{km s^{-1}}$) and specific angular momentum ($>10^{22}\, \rm{cm^{2}\, s^{-1}}$) of the jet around FIR 6b are the largest among all jets in which rotation has been observed. By combining disk wind theory with our observations, the jet launching radius is estimated to be in the range of $2.18-2.96$\,au. The rapid rotation, large specific angular momentum, and a launching radius far from the central protostar can be explained by a magnetohydrodynamic disk wind that contributes to the angular momentum transfer in the late stages of protostellar accretion., 14 pages, 7 figures, and 2 tables. We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. Protostellar jets are most striking phenomena in star-forming regions and considered to be an essential ingredient in the star formation process. Stars form in gravitationally collapsing clouds. The mass of protostar at its birth is equivalent to Jovian mass or 0.1 percent of the solar mass. After the birth, the protostar acquires its mass by accreting material from a surrounding rotation disk embedded in an infalling envelope that is a remnant of the natal cloud of the star. Protostellar jets are believed to expel the excess angular momentum from the circumstellar region that allows accretion on to the star. Here, we report the detection of super-rotating jets driven from a protostar FIR 6b (HOPS 60) in Orion Molecular Cloud-2. The jet rotation velocity exceeds 20kms-1 and the specific angular momentum of the jet is as large as ∼ 1022cm2s-1, which hitherto are the largest that have been observed in protostellar jets. The extraordinary large rotation velocity and specific angular momentum can be explained by a magnetohydrodynamic disk wind. This is clear evidence that magnetic fields play a crucial role for protostellar evolution and that angular momentum is removed by protostellar jets.

Jets are ubiquitous in the universe[1,2]. The radio jet is a beamed plasma flow with relativistic speed accelerated by a supermassive black hole in some galaxies. Recent observations of the relativistic jet in the elliptical galaxy M87 have discovered a triple-ridge sub-structure in the jet at a distance of one thousand Schwartzchild radius from the black hole [3,4]. The triple-ridge structure may be the first strong evidence of the spine-sheath structure consisting of the fast spine region (jet spine) and relatively slow sheath region (jet sheath), which was hypothetically introduced to explain observational features in various unresolved relativistic jets [5,6]. However, the formation mechanism of such a spine-brightened jet is quite enigmatic. Here we report that the combination of the magnetic pinching force induced by an electron-scale shear-instability called Mushroom instability[7] and the high-energy electron ejections by the subsequent magnetic reconnection leads to the drastic accumulation of high-energy electrons in the center of the cylindrical jet. The concentration of high-energy electrons towards the jet center indicates the appearance of bright jet-spine as observed in M87. Thus, the electron-scale, microscopic processes would play an important role in the structure formation and generation of high-energy components in the relativistic jets. We present new observations of the active star formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B -Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (∼1.5 pc × 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ∼1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (∼0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (∼0.005 pc or ∼1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. We have observed the Class I protostar L1489 IRS with the Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6. The C$^{18}$O $J=$2-1 line emission shows flattened and non-axisymmetric structures in the same direction as its velocity gradient due to rotation. We discovered that the C$^{18}$O emission shows dips at a radius of ~200-300 au while the 1.3 mm continuum emission extends smoothly up to r~400 au. At the radius of the C$^{18}$O dips, the rotational axis of the outer portion appears to be tilted by ~15 degrees from that of the inner component. Both the inner and outer components with respect to the C$^{18}$O dips exhibit the $r^{-0.5}$ Keplerian rotation profiles until r~600 au. These results not only indicate that a Keplerian disk extends up to ~600 au but also that the disk is warped. We constructed a three dimensional warped disk model rotating at the Keplerian velocity, and demonstrated that the warped disk model reproduces main observed features in the velocity channel maps and the PV diagrams. Such a warped disk system can form by mass accretion from a misaligned envelope. The magnetic field structure of a star-forming Bok globule BHR 71 was determined based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars. The magnetic field in BHR 71 was mapped from 25 stars. By using a simple 2D parabolic function, the plane-of-sky magnetic axis of the core was found to be $\theta_{\rm mag} = 125^{\circ} \pm 11^{\circ}$. The plane-of-sky mean magnetic field strength of BHR 71 was found to be $B_{\rm pos} = 8.8 - 15.0$ $\mu$G, indicating that the BHR 71 core is magnetically supercritical with $\lambda = 1.44 - 2.43$. Taking into account the effect of thermal/turbulent pressure and the plane-of-sky magnetic field component, the critical mass of BHR 71 was $M_{\rm cr} = 14.5-18.7$ M$_{\odot}$, which is consistent with the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core} \approx 14.7$ M$_{\odot}$ (Yang et al. 2017). We conclude that BHR 71 is in a condition close to a kinematically critical state, and the magnetic field direction lies close to the plane of sky. Since BHR 71 is a star-forming core, a significantly subcritical condition (i.e., the magnetic field direction deviating from the plane of sky) is unlikely, and collapsed from a condition close to a kinematically critical state. There are two possible scenarios to explain the curved magnetic fields of BHR 71, one is an hourglass-like field structure due to mass accumulation and the other is the Inoue \& Fukui (2013) mechanism, which proposes the interaction of the core with a shock wave to create curved magnetic fields wrapping around the core., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

In this study, the detailed magnetic field structure of the dense protostellar core Barnard 335 (B335) was revealed based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars to measure dichroically polarized light produced by magnetically aligned dust grains in the core. Magnetic fields pervading B335 were mapped using 24 stars after subtracting unrelated ambient polarization components, for the first time revealing that they have an axisymmetrically distorted hourglass-shaped structure toward the protostellar core. On the basis of simple two- and three-dimensional magnetic field modeling, magnetic inclination angles in the plane-of-sky and line-of-sight directions were determined to be $90^{\circ} \pm 7^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ} \pm 10^{\circ}$, respectively. The total magnetic field strength of B335 was determined to be $30.2 \pm 17.7$ $\mu {\rm G}$. The critical mass of B335, evaluated using both magnetic and thermal/turbulent support against collapse, was determined to be $M_{\rm cr} = 3.37 \pm 0.94$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is identical to the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core}=3.67$ M$_{\odot}$. We thus concluded that B335 started its contraction from a condition near equilibrium. [Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. Observational data for the hourglass-like magnetic field toward the starless dense core FeSt 1-457 were compared with a flux freezing magnetic field model (Myers et al. 2018). Fitting of the observed plane-of-sky magnetic field using the flux freezing model gave a residual angle dispersion comparable with the results based on a simple three-dimensional parabolic model. The best-fit parameters for the flux freezing model were a line-of-sight magnetic inclination angle of $\gamma_{\rm mag} = 35^{\circ} \pm 15^{\circ}$ and a core center to ambient (background) density contrast of $\rho_{\rm c} / \rho_{\rm bkg} = 75$. The initial density for core formation ($\rho_0$) was estimated to be $\rho_{\rm c} / 75 = 4670$ cm$^{-3}$, which is about one order of magnitude higher than the expected density ($\sim 300$ cm$^{-3}$) for the inter-clump medium of the Pipe Nebula. FeSt 1-457 is likely to have been formed from the accumulation of relatively dense gas, and the relatively dense background column density of $A_V \simeq 5$ mag supports this scenario. The initial radius (core formation radius) $R_0$ and the initial magnetic field strength $B_0$ were obtained to be 0.15 pc ($1.64 R$) and $10.8-14.6$ $\mu$G, respectively. We found that the initial density $\rho_0$ is consistent with the mean density of the nearly critical magnetized filament with magnetic field strength $B_0$ and radius $R_0$. The relatively dense initial condition for core formation can be naturally understood if the origin of the core is the fragmentation of magnetized filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The magnetic field structure, kinematical stability, and evolutionary status of the starless dense core Barnard 68 (B68) are revealed based on the near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars, measuring the dichroically polarized light produced by aligned dust grains in the core. After subtracting unrelated ambient polarization components, the magnetic fields pervading B68 are mapped using 38 stars and axisymmetrically distorted hourglass-like magnetic fields are obtained, although the evidence for the hourglass field is not very strong. On the basis of simple 2D and 3D magnetic field modeling, the magnetic inclination angles on the plane-of-sky and in the line-of-sight direction are determined to be $47^{\circ} \pm 5^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ} \pm 10^{\circ}$, respectively. The total magnetic field strength of B68 is obtained to be $26.1 \pm 8.7$ $\mu {\rm G}$. The critical mass of B68, evaluated using both magnetic and thermal/turbulent support, is $M_{\rm cr} = 2.30 \pm 0.20$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is consistent with the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core}=2.1$ M$_{\odot}$, suggesting nearly critical state. We found a relatively linear relationship between polarization and extinction up to $A_V \sim 30$ mag toward the stars with deepest obscuration. We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We examine the linear stability of a filamentary cloud permeated by a perpendicular magnetic field. The initial magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and perpendicular to the cloud axis. The model cloud is assumed to have a Plummer-like density profile and to be supported against the self-gravity by turbulence. The effects of turbulence are taken into account by enhancing the effective pressure of a low density gas. We derive the effective pressure as a function of the density from the condition of the hydrostatic balance. It is shown that the model cloud is more unstable against radial collapse, when the radial density slope is shallower. When the magnetic field is mildly strong, the radial collapse is suppressed. If the displacement vanishes in the region very far from the cloud axis, the model cloud is stabilized completely by a mildly strong magnetic field. If rearrangement of the magnetic flux tubes is permitted, the model cloud is unstable even when the magnetic field is extremely strong. The stability depends on the outer boundary condition as in case of the isothermal cloud. The growth rate of the rearrangement mode is smaller when the radial density slope is shallower., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, to appear in ApJ

In the published article, we presented high-resolution polarimetry data obtained by using JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2, and compared them with the larger-scale magnetic structure observed by Planck (Planck Collaboration et al. 2020). There was a miscalculation in the analysis of the Planck data for comparison, and the mean position angle of the Planck magnetic field should be corrected from -40° ± 7° to -48° ± 6°. Thus, we replace the descriptions in the published article as follows. In Section 4.2, paragraph 3, the second sentence should read: "The differences between the orientations of IRAS 4A, IRAS 4B, and IRAS 2A are not statistically significant, but they do show significantly different orientations from those of the global B-field observed by Planck (-48° ± 6°; Section 4.1)." In Section 4.1, paragraph 3, the second line should read: "The Planck B-field orientation shows a smoothly and slowly varying field distribution with a position angle of -48° ± 6° in our observed NGC 1333 area." Accordingly, we replace Figures 4, 5, 9, 10, and 17 to reflect the correct Planck data. As described above, this error of modest magnitude is related only to our derivation of the Planck polarization angle, and the JCMT observation results are unaffected. Therefore, all conclusions drawn in the published article are unchanged even after the above correction is applied. The 1 pc scale magnetic field observed by Planck shows a smooth distribution, and the interstellar magnetic field in molecular clouds increases the complexity significantly on the scale of less than 1 pc.

Detailed magnetic field structure of the dense core SL42 (CrA-E) in the Corona Australis molecular cloud complex was investigated based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars to measure dichroically polarized light produced by magnetically aligned dust grains. The magnetic fields in and around SL42 were mapped using 206 stars and curved magnetic fields were identified. On the basis of simple hourglass (parabolic) magnetic field modeling, the magnetic axis of the core on the plane of sky was estimated to be $40^{\circ} \pm 3^{\circ}$. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of SL42 was found to be $22.4 \pm 13.9$ $��$G. Taking into account the effects of thermal/turbulent pressure and the plane-of-sky magnetic field component, the critical mass of SL42 was obtained to be $M_{\rm cr} = 21.2 \pm 6.6$ M$_{\odot}$, which is close to the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core} \approx 20$ M$_{\odot}$. We thus conclude that SL42 is in a condition close to the critical state if the magnetic fields lie near the plane of the sky. Since there is a very low luminosity object (VeLLO) toward the center of SL42, it is unlikely this core is in a highly subcritical condition (i.e., magnetic inclination angle significantly deviated from the plane of sky). The core probably started to collapse from a nearly kinematically critical state. The detailed magnetic field structure of the starless dense core CB81 (L1774, Pipe 42) in the Pipe Nebula was determined based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars to measure dichroically polarized light produced by magnetically aligned dust grains in the core. The magnetic fields pervading CB81 were mapped using 147 stars and axisymmetrically distorted hourglass-like fields were identified. On the basis of simple 2D and 3D magnetic field modeling, the magnetic inclination angles in the plane-of-sky and line-of-sight directions were determined to be $4^{\circ} \pm 8^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ} \pm 20^{\circ}$, respectively. The total magnetic field strength of CB81 was found to be $7.2 \pm 2.3$ $\mu{\rm G}$. Taking into account the effects of thermal/turbulent pressure and magnetic fields, the critical mass of CB81 was calculated to be $M_{\rm cr}=4.03 \pm 0.40$ M$_{\odot}$, which is close to the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core}=3.37 \pm 0.51$ M$_{\odot}$. We thus conclude that CB81 is in a condition close to the critical state. In addition, a spatial offset of $92''$ was found between the center of magnetic field geometry and the dust extinction distribution; this offset structure could not have been produced by self-gravity. The data also indicate a linear relationship between polarization and extinction up to $A_V \sim 30$ mag going toward the core center. Both high- and low-velocity outflows are occasionally observed around a protostar by molecular line emission. The high-velocity component is called `Extremely High-Velocity (EHV) flow,' while the low-velocity component is simply referred as `(molecular) outflow.' This study reports a newly found EHV flow and outflow around MMS $5$ in the Orion Molecular Cloud 3 observed with ALMA. In the observation, CO $J$=2--1 emission traces both the EHV flow ($|v_{\rm{LSR}} - v_{\rm{sys}}|$ $\simeq$ 50--100 $\rm{km\ s^{-1}}$) and outflow ($|v_{\rm{LSR}} - v_{\rm{sys}}|$ $\simeq$ 10--50 $\rm{km\ s^{-1}}$). On the other hand, SiO $J$=5--4 emission only traces the EHV flow. The EHV flow is collimated and located at the root of the V-shaped outflow. The CO outflow extends up to $\sim$ 14,000\,AU with a position angle (P.A.) of $\sim79^\circ$ and the CO redshifted EHV flow extends to $\sim$11,000 AU with P.A. $\sim96^\circ$. The EHV flow is smaller than the outflow, and the dynamical timescale of the EHV flow is shorter than that of the outflow by a factor of $\sim 3$. The flow driving mechanism is discussed based on the size, time scale, axis difference between the EHV flow and outflow, and the periodicity of the knots. The relationship between dust polarization and extinction was determined for the cold dense starless molecular cloud core FeSt 1-457 based on the background star polarimetry of dichroic extinction at near-infrared wavelengths. Owing to the known (three-dimensional) magnetic field structure, the observed polarizations from the core were corrected by considering (a) the subtraction of the ambient polarization component, (b) the depolarization effect of inclined distorted magnetic fields, and (c) the magnetic inclination angle of the core. After these corrections, a linear relationship between polarization and extinction was obtained for the core in the range up to $A_V \approx 20$ mag. The initial polarization vs. extinction diagram changed dramatically after the corrections of (a) to (c), with the correlation coefficient being refined from 0.71 to 0.79. These corrections should affect the theoretical interpretation of the observational data. The slope of the finally obtained polarization--extinction relationship is $P_H / E_{H-K_s} = 11.00 \pm 0.72$ $\%$ ${\rm mag}^{-1}$, which is close to the statistically estimated upper limit of the interstellar polarization efficiency (Jones 1989). This consistency suggests that the upper limit of interstellar polarization efficiency might be determined by the observational viewing angle toward polarized astronomical objects., Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

In the present study, the magnetic field scaling on density, $|B| \propto \rho^{\kappa}$, was revealed in a single starless core for the first time. The $\kappa$ index of $0.78 \pm 0.10$ was obtained toward the starless dense core FeSt 1-457 based on the analysis of the radial distribution of the polarization angle dispersion of background stars measured at the near-infrared wavelengths. The result prefers $\kappa = 2/3$ for the case of isotropic contraction, and the difference of the observed value from $\kappa = 1/2$ is 2.8 sigma. The distribution of the ratio of mass to magnetic flux was evaluated. FeSt 1-457 was found to be magnetically supercritical near the center ($\lambda \approx 2$), whereas nearly critical or slightly subcritical at the core boundary ($\lambda \approx 0.98$). Ambipolar-diffusion-regulated star formation models for the case of moderate magnetic field strength may explain the physical status of FeSt 1-457. The mass-to-flux ratio distribution for typical dense cores (critical Bonnor--Ebert sphere with central $\lambda=2$ and $\kappa=1/2$--$2/3$) was calculated and found to be magnetically critical/subcritical at the core edge, which indicates that typical dense cores are embedded in and evolve from magnetically critical/subcritical diffuse surrounding medium., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

We report our systematic survey observations of protostellar sources with the SubMillimeter Array (SMA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The purpose of our survey is to investigate formation mechanism of protoplanetary disks, precursors of planetary systems, out of ~1000 AU-scale protostellar envelopes surrounding the protostars. We found that in the early protostars (B335, NGC1333 IRAS 4B), the envelopes do not show significant rotating motions but infalling motions toward the central protostars. In more evolved protostars (L1527 IRS, L1448-mm, L1551 IRS 5), the envelopes are infalling and rotating with the conserved specific angular momenta (that is, vrot ∝ r−1). In most evolved sources (L1551 NE, TMC-1A, L1489 IRS) large-scale (≳100 AU) disks in Keplerian rotation or protoplanetary disks are evident. These results demonstrate a systematic evolutionary trend of envelope gas motions toward the disk formation.

We have newly observed the Class 0/I protostar L1527 IRS using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) during its Cycle 1 in 220 GHz dust continuum and C18O (J=2-1) line emissions with a ~2 times higher angular resolution (~0.5") and ~4 times better sensitivity than our ALMA Cycle 0 observations. Continuum emission shows elongation perpendicular to the associated outflow, with a deconvolved size of 0.53"x0.15". C18O emission shows similar elongation, indicating that both emissions trace the disk and the flattened envelope surrounding the protostar. The velocity gradient of the C18O emission along the elongation due to rotation of the disk/envelope system is re-analyzed, identifying Keplerian rotation proportional to r^-0.5 more clearly than the Cycle 0 observations. The Keplerian-disk radius and the dynamical stellar mass are kinematically estimated to be ~74 AU and ~0.45 Mo, respectively. The continuum visibility is fitted by models without any annulus averaging, revealing that the disk is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The best-fit model also suggests a density jump by a factor of ~5 between the disk and the envelope, suggesting that disks around protostars can be geometrically distinguishable from the envelope from a viewpoint of density contrast. Importantly, the disk radius geometrically identified with the density jump is consistent with the radius kinematically estimated. Possible origin of the density jump due to the mass accretion from the envelope to the disk is discussed. We examine the linear stability of an isothermal filamentary cloud permeated by a perpendicular magnetic field. Our model cloud is assumed to be supported by gas pressure against the self-gravity in the unperturbed state. For simplicity, the density distribution is assumed to be symmetric around the axis. Also for simplicity, the initial magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and turbulence is not taken into account. The perturbation equation is formulated to be an eigenvalue problem. The growth rate is obtained as a function of the wavenumber for fragmentation along the axis and the magnetic field strength. The growth rate depends critically on the outer boundary. If the displacement vanishes in the region very far from the cloud axis (fixed boundary), cloud fragmentation is suppressed by a moderate magnetic field, which means the plasma beta is below 1.67 on the cloud axis. If the displacement is constant along the magnetic field in the region very far from the cloud, the cloud is unstable even when the magnetic field is infinitely strong. The cloud is deformed by circulation in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The unstable mode is not likely to induce dynamical collapse, since it is excited even when the whole cloud is magnetically subcritical. For both the boundary conditions the magnetic field increases the wavelength of the most unstable mode. Three dimensional (3D) magnetic field information on molecular clouds and cores is important for revealing their kinematical stability (magnetic support) against gravity which is fundamental for studying the initial conditions of star formation. In the present study, the 3D magnetic field structure of the dense starless core FeSt 1-457 is determined based on the near-infrared polarimetric observations of the dichroic polarization of background stars and simple 3D modeling. With an obtained angle of line-of-sight magnetic inclination axis $\theta_{\rm inc}$ of $45^{\circ}\pm10^{\circ}$ and previously determined plane-of-sky magnetic field strength $B_{\rm pol}$ of $23.8\pm12.1$ $\mu{\rm G}$, the total magnetic field strength for FeSt 1-457 is derived to be $33.7\pm18.0$ $\mu{\rm G}$. The critical mass of FeSt 1-457, evaluated using both magnetic and thermal/turbulent support is ${M}_{\rm cr} = 3.70\pm0.92$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, which is identical to the observed core mass, $M_{\rm core}=3.55\pm0.75$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$. We thus conclude that the stability of FeSt 1-457 is in a condition close to the critical state. Without infalling gas motion and no associated young stars, the core is regarded to be in the earliest stage of star formation, i.e., the stage just before the onset of dynamical collapse following the attainment of a supercritical condition. The mechanisms causing millimeter-wave polarization in protoplanetary disks are under debate. To disentangle the polarization mechanisms, we observe the protoplanetary disk around HL Tau at 3.1 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), which had polarization detected with CARMA at 1.3 mm. We successfully detect the ring-like azimuthal polarized emission at 3.1 mm. This indicates that dust grains are aligned with the major axis being in the azimuthal direction, which is consistent with the theory of radiative alignment of elongated dust grains, where the major axis of dust grains is perpendicular to the radiation flux. Furthermore, the morphology of the polarization vectors at 3.1 mm is completely different from those at 1.3 mm. We interpret that the polarization at 3.1 mm to be dominated by the grain alignment with the radiative flux producing azimuthal polarization vectors, while the self-scattering dominates at 1.3 mm and produces the polarization vectors parallel to the minor axis of the disk. By modeling the total polarization fraction with a single grain population model, the maximum grain size is constrained to be $100{\rm~\mu m}$, which is smaller than the previous predictions based on the spectral index between ALMA at 3 mm and VLA at 7 mm., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

In this study, we investigate the line emissions from cold molecular gas based on our previous "radiation-driven fountain model" (Wada 2016), which reliably explains the spectral energy distribution of the nearest type 2 Seyfert galaxy, the Circinus galaxy. Using a snapshot of the best-fit radiation-hydrodynamic model for the central r < 16 pc, in which non-equilibrium X-ray-dominated region chemistry is solved, we conduct post-processed, non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiation transfer simulations for the CO lines. We obtain a spectral line energy distribution with a peak around J=6, and its distribution suggests that the lines are not thermalized. However, for a given line-of-sight, the optical depth distribution is highly non-uniform between $\tau \ll 1$ and $\tau \gg 1$. The CO-to-H2 conversion factor (X_CO), which can be directly obtained from the results, is not a constant and depends strongly on the integrated intensity, and it differs from the fiducial value for local objects. X_CO exhibits a large dispersion of more than one order of magnitude, reflecting the non-uniform internal structure of a "torus." We also found that the physical conditions differ between grid cells on a scale of a few parsecs along the observed lines of sight; therefore, a specific observed line ratio does not necessarily represent a single physical state of the ISM., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, accepted by ApJ

Using the $\approx$15km ALMA long baselines, we imaged the Stokes $I$ emission and linearly polarized intensity ($PI$) in the 1.1-mm continuum band of a very young intermediate-mass protostellar source, MMS 6, in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3. The achieved angular resolution, $0''.02{\times}0''.03$ ($\approx$10 AU), shows for the first time a wealth of data on the dust emission polarization in the central 200 AU of a protostar. The $PI$ peak is offset to the south-west (SW) by $\approx$20 AU with respect to the Stokes $I$ peak. Its polarization degree is 11 % with its $E$-vector orientation of P.A.${\approx}135^{\circ}$. A partial ring-like structure with a radius of $\approx$80 AU is detected in $PI$ but not in the Stokes $I$. NW (north-west) and SE (south-east) parts of the ring are bright with a high polarization degree of $\gtrsim$10 %, and their $E$-vector orientations are roughly orthogonal to those observed near the center. We also detected arm-like polarized structures, extending to 1000 AU scale to the north, with the $E$-vectors aligned along the minor axis of the structures. We explored possible origins of the polarized emission comparing with magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations of the toroidal wrapping of the magnetic field. The simulations are consistent with the $PI$ emission in the ring-like and the extended arm-like structures observed with ALMA. However, the current simulations do not completely reproduce observed polarization characteristics in the central 50 AU. Although the self-scattering model can explain the polarization pattern and positional offset between the Stokes $I$ and $PI$, this model is not able to reproduce the observed high degree of polarization., Comment: 47 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Filamentary molecular clouds are thought to fragment to form clumps and cores. However, the fragmentation may be suppressed by magnetic force if the magnetic fields run perpendicularly to the cloud axis. We evaluate the effect using a simple model. Our model cloud is assumed to have a Plummer like radial density distribution, $\rho = {\rho _{\rm{c}}}{\left[ {1 + {r^2}/(2p{H^2})} \right]^{2p}}$ , where r and H denote the radial distance from the cloud axis and the scale length, respectively. The symbols, ρc and p denote the density on the axis and radial density index, respectively. The initial magnetic field is assumed to be uniform and perpendicular to the cloud axis. The model cloud is assumed to be supported against the self gravity by gas pressure and turbulence. We have obtained the growth rate of the fragmentation instability as a function of the wavelength, according to the method of Hanawa, Kudoh & Tomisaka (2017). The instability depends crucially on the outer boundary. If the displacement vanishes in regions very far from the cloud axis, cloud fragmentation is suppressed by a moderate magnetic field. If the displacement is constant along the magnetic field in regions very far from the cloud, the cloud is unstable even when the magnetic field is infinitely strong. The wavelength of the most unstable mode is longer for smaller index, p.

We perform a three-dimensional nested-grid radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (RMHD) simulation with self-gravity to study the early phase of the low-mass star formation process from a rotating molecular cloud core to a first adiabatic core just before the second collapse begins. Radiation transfer is handled with the flux-limited diffusion approximation, operator-splitting and implicit time-integrator. In the RMHD simulation, the outer region of the first core attains a higher entropy and the size of first core is larger than that in the magnetohydrodynamics simulations with the barotropic approximation. Bipolar molecular outflow consisting of two components is driven by magnetic Lorentz force via different mechanisms, and shock heating by the outflow is observed. Using the RMHD simulation we can predict and interpret the observed properties of star-forming clouds, first cores and outflows with millimeter/submillimeter radio interferometers, especially the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)., 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJL

We examine emission from a young protostellar object (YPO) with three-dimensional ideal MHD simulations and three-dimensional non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line transfer calculations, and show the first results. To calculate the emission field, we employed a snapshot result of an MHD simulation having young bipolar outflows and a dense protostellar disk (a young circumstellar disk) embedded in an infalling envelope. Synthesized line emission of two molecular species (CO and SiO) show that subthermally excited SiO lines as a high density tracer can provide a better probe of the complex velocity field of a YPO, compared to fully thermalized CO lines. In a YPO at the earliest stage when the outflows are still embedded in the collapsing envelope, infall, rotation and outflow motions have similar speeds. We find that the combined velocity field of these components introduces a great complexity in the line emissions through varying optical thickness and emissivity, such as asymmetric double-horn profiles. We show that the rotation of the outflows, one of the features that characterizes an outflow driven by magneto-centrifugal forces, appears clearly in velocity channel maps and intensity-weighted mean velocity (first moment of velocity) maps. The somewhat irregular morphology of the line emission at this youngest stage is dissimilar to a more evolved object such as young Class 0. We followed the collapse of cloud cores with various rotation speed and density frustrations using three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations by assuming a barotropic equation of state and examined the comprehensive evolution paths from the rotation molecule cloud core to stellar core. We found that the evolutionary paths depend only on the angular velocity of initial cloud core Ωc0. These evolutionary paths agree well with predictions of Saigo and Tomisaka's quasi-equilibrium axisymmetric models and SPH calculations of Bate. Evolutionary paths are qualitatively classified into three types. (1) A slowly rotating cloud with Ωc0 < 0.01/tff = 0.05(ρc0/10−19 g cm −3)1/2 rad Myr −1 shows spherical-type evolution, where ρc0 is the initial central density. Such a cloud forms a first core which is mainly supported by the thermal pressure. The first core has a small mass of Mcore ~ 0.01 M☉ and a short lifetime of a few ×100 yr. After exceeding the H2 dissociation density ρ 5.6 × 10−8 g cm −3, it begins the second collapse, and the whole of the first core accretes onto the stellar core/disk within a few free-fall timescales. (2) A rotating cloud with 0.01/tff < Ωc0 0.05/tff shows disk-type evolution. In this case, the first core becomes a centrifugally supported massive disk with Mcore ~ a few × 0.01–0.1 M☉ and the lifetime is a few thousand years. The first core is unstable against nonaxisymmetric dynamic instability and forms spiral arms. The gravitational torque through spiral structure extracts angular momentum from the central region to the outer region of the first core. And only a central part with r ~ 1 AU begins the second collapse after exceeding dissociation density. However, the outer remnant disk keeps its centrifugal balance after stellar core formation. It seems that this remnant of the first core should control the mass and angular momentum accretion onto the newborn stellar system. (3) A rotating cloud with 0.05/tff Ωc0 tends to fragment into binary or multiple during the first core phase.
