1. Direct Evidence for Density Wave Order in 3He Doped Two Dimensional 4He Supersolid

Abstract

We previously reported the discovery of a two dimensional $^{4}$He supersolid; a state with intertwined density wave and superfluid order, observed in the second layer of $^{4}$He adsorbed on graphite. In this Letter we provide direct evidence for the density wave order, obtained by doping the layer with a small concentration of $^{3}$He atoms (impuritons). The heat capacity, magnetization and NMR relaxation times of the $^{3}$He were measured over a wide temperature range from 200 $\mu$K to 500 mK. They provide evidence for changes in the ground state in the second layer film as the amount of $^{4}$He is increased at various fixed $^{3}$He doses. 2. A Multi-model Approach for Video Data Retrieval in Autonomous Vehicle Development

Abstract

Autonomous driving software generates enormous amounts of data every second, which software development organizations save for future analysis and testing in the form of logs. However, given the vast size of this data, locating specific scenarios within a collection of vehicle logs can be challenging. Writing the correct SQL queries to find these scenarios requires engineers to have a strong background in SQL and the specific databases in question, further complicating the search process. This paper presents and evaluates a pipeline that allows searching for specific scenarios in log collections using natural language descriptions instead of SQL. The generated descriptions were evaluated by engineers working with vehicle logs at the Zenseact on a scale from 1 to 5. Our approach achieved a mean score of 3.3, demonstrating the potential of using a multi-model architecture to improve the software development workflow. We also present an interface that can visualize the query process and visualize the results.

3. Parameter control for eccentric, precessing binary black hole simulations with SpEC

Abstract

Numerical relativity simulations of merging black holes provide the most accurate description of the binary dynamics and the emitted gravitational wave signal. However, practical considerations such as imperfect initial data and initial parameters mean that achieving target parameters, such as the orbital eccentricity or the black hole spin directions, at the beginning of the usable part of the simulation is challenging. In this paper, we devise a method to produce simulations with specific target parameters, namely the Keplerian orbital parameters - eccentricity, semi-major axis, mean anomaly - and the black hole spin vectors using SpEC. The method is an extension of the current process for achieving vanishing eccentricity and it is based on a parameter control loop that iteratively numerically evolves the system, fits the orbit with analytical post-Newtonian equations, and calculates updated input parameters. Through SpEC numerical simulations, we demonstrate $\lesssim 10^{-3}$ and $O(\rm degree)$ convergence for the orbital eccentricity and the spin directions respectively in $\leq7$ iterations. These tests extend to binaries with mass ratios $q \leq 3$, eccentricities $e \leq 0.65$, and spin magnitudes $|\chi | \leq 0.75$. 4. Upper Bounds on Polynomial Root Separation

Abstract

In this paper, we consider the relationship between the Mahler measure of a polynomial and its separation. In 1964, Mahler proved that if $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ is separable of degree $n$, then $\operatorname{sep}(f) \gg_n M(f)^{-(n-1)}$. This spurred further investigations into the implicit constant involved in that relation, and it led to questions about the optimal exponent on $M(f)$ in that relation. However, there has been relatively little study concerning upper bounds on $\operatorname{sep}(f)$ in terms of $M(f)$. In this paper, we prove that if $f(x) \in \mathbb{C}[x]$ has degree $n$, then $\operatorname{sep}(f) \ll n^{-1/2}M(f)^{1/(n-1)}$. Moreover, this bound is sharp up to the implied constant factor. 5. Finite time path field theory perturbative methods for local quantum spin chain quenches

Abstract

We discuss local magnetic field quenches using perturbative methods of finite time path field theory in the following spin chains: Ising and XY in a transverse magnetic field. Their common characteristics are: i) they are integrable via mapping to second quantized noninteracting fermion problem; ii) when the ground state is nondegenerate (true for finite chains except in special cases) it can be represented as a vacuum of Bogoliubov fermions. By switching on a local magnetic field perturbation at finite time, the problem becomes nonintegrable and must be approached via numeric or perturbative methods. Using the formalism of finite time path field theory based on Wigner transforms of projected functions, we show how to: i) calculate the basic "bubble" diagram in the Loschmidt echo of a quenched chain to any order in the perturbation; ii) resum the generalized Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion two point retarded functions in the "bubble" diagram, hence achieving the resummation of perturbative expansion of Loschmidt echo for a wide range of perturbation strengths under certain analiticity assumptions. Abstract

Discrete flavor symmetries have been an appealing approach for explaining the observed flavor structure, which is not justified in the Standard Model (SM). Typically, these models require a so-called flavon field in order to give rise to the flavor structure upon the breaking of the flavor symmetry by the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the flavon. Generally, in order to obtain the desired vacuum alignment, a flavon potential that includes additional so-called driving fields is required. On the other hand, allowing the flavor symmetry to be modular leads to a structure where the couplings are all holomorphic functions that depend only on a complex modulus, thus greatly reducing the number of parameters in the model. We show that these elements can be combined to simultaneously explain the flavor structure and dark matter (DM) relic abundance. We present a modular model with flavon vacuum alignment that allows for realistic flavor predictions while providing a successful fermionic DM candidate., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Fusion is a potentially transformational energy technology, which promises limitless clean energy. Yet, it requires continued scientific and technological development to realize its potential. The conditions necessary for fusion energy gain in terms of the product of plasma pressure $P$ and confinement time $\tau$ have been known for many decades. An underappreciated fact is that pulsed magnetic fusion has demonstrated $P \tau$ performance on par with laser-driven ICF and tokamaks despite receiving only a small fraction of investment relative to those concepts. In light of this demonstrated performance, well-established scaling relations, and opportunities for further innovations, here we advocate for pulsed magnetic fusion as the most attractive path towards commercialization of fusion energy.

Abstract

A significant challenge in computational chemistry is developing approximations that accelerate \emph{ab initio} methods while preserving accuracy. Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have emerged as a promising solution for constructing atomistic potentials that can be transferred across different molecular and crystalline systems. Most MLIPs are trained only on energies and forces in vacuum, while an improved description of the potential energy surface could be achieved by including the curvature of the potential energy surface. We present Hessian QM9, the first database of equilibrium configurations and numerical Hessian matrices, consisting of 41,645 molecules from the QM9 dataset at the $\omega$B97x/6-31G* level. Molecular Hessians were calculated in vacuum, as well as water, tetrahydrofuran, and toluene using an implicit solvation model. To demonstrate the utility of this dataset, we show that incorporating second derivatives of the potential energy surface into the loss function of a MLIP significantly improves the prediction of vibrational frequencies in all solvent environments, thus making this dataset extremely useful for studying organic molecules in realistic solvent environments for experimental characterization., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figues

Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. 10. Coalitions of Large Language Models Increase the Robustness of AI Agents

Abstract

The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) have fundamentally altered the way we interact with digital systems and have led to the pursuit of LLM powered AI agents to assist in daily workflows. LLMs, whilst powerful and capable of demonstrating some emergent properties, are not logical reasoners and often struggle to perform well at all sub-tasks carried out by an AI agent to plan and execute a workflow. While existing studies tackle this lack of proficiency by generalised pretraining at a huge scale or by specialised fine-tuning for tool use, we assess if a system comprising of a coalition of pretrained LLMs, each exhibiting specialised performance at individual sub-tasks, can match the performance of single model agents. The coalition of models approach showcases its potential for building robustness and reducing the operational costs of these AI agents by leveraging traits exhibited by specific models. Our findings demonstrate that fine-tuning can be mitigated by considering a coalition of pretrained models and believe that this approach can be applied to other non-agentic systems which utilise LLMs.

Abstract

An epistemic ensemble is composed of knowledge-based agents capable of retrieving and sharing knowledge and beliefs about themselves and their peers. These agents access a global knowledge state and use actions to communicate and cooperate, altering the collective knowledge state. We study two types of mathematical semantics for epistemic ensembles based on a common syntactic operational ensemble semantics: a semantic environment defined by a class of global epistemic states, and a symbolic environment consisting of a set of epistemic formul{\ae}. For relating these environments, we use the concept of {\Phi}-equivalence, where a class of epistemic states and a knowledge base are {\Phi}-equivalent, if any formula of {\Phi} holds in the class of epistemic states if, and only if, it is an element of the knowledge base. Abstract

Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. 14. Precise Calorimetry of Small Metal Samples Using Noise Thermometry

Abstract

We describe a compact calorimeter that opens ultra-low temperature heat capacity studies of small metal crystals in moderate magnetic fields. The performance is demonstrated on the canonical heavy Fermion metal YbRh2Si2. Thermometry is provided by a fast current sensing noise thermometer. This single thermometer enables us to cover a wide temperature range of interest from 175 $\mu$K to 90 mK with temperature independent relative precision. Temperatures are tied to the international temperature scale with a single point calibration. A superconducting solenoid surrounding the cell provides the sample field for tuning its properties and operates a superconducting heat switch. Both adiabatic and relaxation calorimetry techniques, as well as magnetic field sweeps, are employed. The design of the calorimeter results in an addendum heat capacity which is negligible for the study reported. The keys to sample and thermometer thermalisation are the lack of dissipation in the temperature measurement and the steps taken to reduce the parasitic heat leak into the cell to the tens of fW level., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Reproducibility is a foundational standard for validating scientific claims in computational research. Stochastic computational models are employed across diverse fields such as systems biology, financial modelling and environmental sciences. Existing infrastructure and software tools support various aspects of reproducible model development, application, and dissemination, but do not adequately address independently reproducing simulation results that form the basis of scientific conclusions. To bridge this gap, we introduce the Empirical Characteristic Function Equality Convergence Test (EFECT), a data-driven method to quantify the reproducibility of stochastic simulation results. EFECT employs empirical characteristic functions to compare reported results with those independently generated by assessing distributional inequality, termed EFECT error, a metric to quantify the likelihood of equality. Additionally, we establish the EFECT convergence point, a metric for determining the required number of simulation runs to achieve an EFECT error value of a priori statistical significance, setting a reproducibility benchmark. EFECT supports all real-valued and bounded results irrespective of the model or method that produced them, and accommodates stochasticity from intrinsic model variability and random sampling of model inputs. We tested EFECT with stochastic differential equations, agent-based models, and Boolean networks, demonstrating its broad applicability and effectiveness. EFECT standardizes stochastic simulation reproducibility, establishing a workflow that guarantees reliable results, supporting a wide range of stakeholders, and thereby enhancing validation of stochastic simulation studies, across a model's lifecycle. Abstract

Hyperfine energy levels in trapped ions offer long-lived spin states. In addition, the motion of these charged particles couples strongly to external electric field perturbations. These characteristics make trapped ions attractive platforms for the quantum sensing of electric fields. However, the spin states do not exhibit a strong intrinsic coupling to electric fields. This limits the achievable sensitivities. Here, we amplify the coupling between electric field perturbations and the spin states by using a static magnetic field gradient. Displacements of the trapped ion resulting from the forces experienced by an applied external electric field perturbation are thereby mapped to an instantaneous change in the energy level splitting of the internal spin states. This gradient mediated coupling of the electric field to the spin enables the use of a range of well-established magnetometry protocols for electrometry. Using our quantum sensor, we demonstrate AC sensitivities of $\mathrm{S^{AC}_{min}=960(10)\times 10^{-6}~V m^{-1}Hz^{-\frac{1}{2}}}$ at a signal frequency of $\omega_{\epsilon}/2\pi=5.82~\mathrm{Hz}$, and DC sensitivities of $\mathrm{S^{DC}_{min}=1.97(3)\times 10^{-3} ~V m^{-1}Hz^{-\frac{1}{2}}}$ with a Hahn-echo type sensing sequence. We also employ a rotating frame relaxometry technique, with which our quantum sensor can be utilised as an electric field noise spectrum analyser. We measure electric field signals down to a noise floor of $\mathrm{S_{E}(\omega)=6.2(5)\times 10^{-12}~V^2 m^{-2}Hz^{-1}}$ at a frequency of $\mathrm{30.0(3)~kHz}$. We therefore demonstrate unprecedented electric field sensitivities for the measurement of both DC signals and AC signals across a frequency range of sub-Hz to $\sim\mathrm{500~kHz}$. Finally, we describe a set of hardware modifications that are capable of achieving a further improvement in sensitivity by up to six orders of magnitude.

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

Ehrenfeucht-Fra\"iss\'e games provide means to characterize elementary equivalence for first-order logic, and by standard translation also for modal logics. We propose a novel generalization of Ehrenfeucht- Fra\"iss\'e games to hybrid-dynamic logics which is direct and fully modular: parameterized by the features of the hybrid language we wish to include, for instance, the modal and hybrid language operators as well as first-order existential quantification. We use these games to establish a new modular Fra\"iss\'e-Hintikka Theorem for hybrid-dynamic propositional logic and its various fragments. We study the relationship between countable game equivalence (determined by countable Ehrenfeucht- Fra\"iss\'e games) and bisimulation (determined by countable back-and-forth systems). In general, the former turns out to be weaker than the latter, but under certain conditions on the language, the two coincide. We also use games to prove that for reachable image-finite Kripke structures elementary equivalence implies isomorphism.

21. Spectroscopy and modeling of $^{171}$Yb Rydberg states for high-fidelity two-qubit gates

Abstract

We present multichannel quantum defect (MQDT) models for highly excited $^{174}$Yb and $^{171}$Yb Rydberg states with $L \leq 2$. The models are developed using a combination of existing literature data and new, high-precision laser and microwave spectroscopy in an atomic beam, and validated by detailed comparison with experimentally measured Stark shifts and magnetic moments. We then use these models to compute interaction potentials between two Yb atoms, and find excellent agreement with direct measurements in an optical tweezer array. From the computed interaction potential, we identify an anomalous F\"orster resonance that likely degraded the fidelity of previous entangling gates in $^{171}$Yb using $F=3/2$ Rydberg states. We then identify a more suitable $F=1/2$ state, and achieve a state-of-the-art controlled-Z gate fidelity of $\mathcal{F}=0.994(1)$, with the remaining error fully explained by known sources. This work establishes a solid foundation for the continued development quantum computing, simulation and entanglement-enhanced metrology with Yb neutral atom arrays.

22. Economic Evaluation of Anti-Epileptic Medicines for Autistic Children with Epilepsy

Abstract

We examine the cost-effectiveness of treating epilepsy with anti-epileptic medicines in autistic children, looking at impacts on healthcare providers (in England, Ireland, Italy and Spain) and children's families (in Ireland). We find carbamazepine to be the most cost-effective drug to try first in children with newly diagnosed focal seizures. For England and Spain, oxcarbazepine is the most cost-effective treatment when taken as additional treatment for those children whose response to monotherapy is suboptimal. In Ireland and Italy, gabapentin is the most cost-effective option. Our additional scenario analysis presents the aggregate cost to families with autistic children who are being treated for epilepsy: this cost is considerably higher than healthcare provider expenditure.

Abstract

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after trauma exposure. Some studies report that women develop PTSD at twice the rate of men, despite greater trauma exposure in men. Lipids and their metabolites (lipidome) regulate a myriad of key biological processes and pathways such as membrane integrity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation in the brain by maintaining neuronal connectivity and homeostasis. In this study, we analyzed the lipidome of 40 adults with PTSD and 40 trauma-exposed non-PTSD individuals (n = 20/sex/condition; 19-39 years old). Plasma samples were analyzed for lipidomics using Quadrupole Time-of-Flight (QToF) mass spectrometry. Additionally, ~ 90 measures were collected, on sleep, and mental and physical health indices. Poorer sleep quality was associated with greater PTSD severity in both sexes. The lipidomics analysis identified a total of 348 quantifiable known lipid metabolites and 1951 lipid metabolites that are yet unknown; known metabolites were part of 13 lipid subclasses. After adjusting for BMI and sleep quality, in women with PTSD, only one lipid subclass, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was altered, whereas, in men with PTSD, 9 out of 13 subclasses were altered compared to non-PTSD women and men, respectively. Severe PTSD was associated with 22% and 5% of altered lipid metabolites in men and women, respectively. Of the changed metabolites, only 0.5% measures (2 PEs and cholesterol) were common between women and men with PTSD. Several sphingomyelins, PEs, ceramides, and triglycerides were increased in men with severe PTSD. The correlations between triglycerides and ceramide metabolites with cholesterol metabolites and systolic blood pressure were dependent upon sex and PTSD status. Alterations in triglycerides and ceramides are linked with cardiac health and metabolic function in humans. Thus, disturbed sleep and higher body mass may have contributed to changes in the lipidome found in PTSD.

Abstract

Leucine rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) is a large multidomain protein containing two catalytic domains, a kinase and a GTPase, as well as protein interactions domains, including a WD40 domain. The association of increased LRRK2 kinase activity with both the familial and sporadic forms of Parkinsons disease has led to an intense interest in determining its cellular function. However, small molecule probes that can bind to LRRK2 and report on or affect its cellular activity are needed. Here, we report the identification and characterization of the first high-affinity LRRK2-binding designed ankyrin-repeat protein (DARPin), named E11. Using cryo-EM, we show that DARPin E11 binds to the LRRK2 WD40 domain. LRRK2 bound to DARPin E11 showed improved behavior on cryo-EM grids, resulting in higher resolution LRRK2 structures. DARPin E11 did not affect the catalytic activity of a truncated form of LRRK2 in vitro but decreased the phosphorylation of Rab8A, a LRRK2 substrate, in cells. We also found that DARPin E11 disrupts the formation of microtubule-associated LRRK2 filaments in cells, which are known to require WD40-based dimerization. Thus, DARPin E11 is a new tool to explore the function and dysfunction of LRRK2 and guide the development of LRRK2 kinase inhibitors that target the WD40 domain instead of the kinase.

Abstract

No state of matter can be defined categorically by what it is not; yet spin liquids are often conjectured to exist based on the nonexistence of magnetic order as $T \to 0$. An emerging concept designed to circumvent this ambiguity is to categorically identify each spin liquid type by using its spectrum of spontaneous spin noise. Here we introduce such a spectroscopy to spin liquid studies by considering Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$. This is a spin liquid, but whether classical or quantum and in which specific state, are unknown. By enhancing the flux-noise spectrometry techniques introduced for magnetic monopole noise studies, here we measure the time and temperature dependence of spontaneous flux $\varPhi(t,T)$ and thus magnetization $M(t,T)$ of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ samples. The resulting power spectral density of magnetization noise $S_M(\omega,T)$ along with its correlation function $C_M(t,T)$, reveal intense spin fluctuations spanning frequencies $0.1\ \mathrm{Hz} \leq \omega/2\pi \leq 50\ \mathrm{kHz}$, and that $S_M(\omega,T)\propto \omega^{-\alpha(T)}$ with $0.84 < \alpha(T) < 1.04$. Predictions for quantum spin liquids yield a frequency-independent spin-noise spectrum, clearly inconsistent with this phenomenology However, when compared to Monte Carlo simulations for a 2D spiral spin liquid state that are accurately parameterized to describe Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$, comprehensive quantitative correspondence with the data including $S_M(\omega,T)$, $C_M(t,T)$ and magnetization variance $\sigma_M^2(T)$ fingerprint the state of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ as a spiral spin liquid., Comment: 42 pages, 4 main figures, 8 supplementary figures, 2 supplementary movies

Abstract

A hybrid model is a fibration of a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold over a geometric base. We study B-type D-branes in hybrid models. Imposing B-type supersymmetry on the boundary action, we show that D-branes are specified by matrix factorisations in the fibre direction, together with some geometric data associated to the base. We also deduce conditions for the compatibility of these branes with the bulk orbifold actions and R-symmetry. We construct examples of hybrid B-branes which are generalisations of well-studied branes in geometric and Landau-Ginzburg models. Abstract

The low-frequency sky below $\sim$15 MHz (20 m) is obscured by the Earth's ionosphere, the layer of charged particles above the neutral atmosphere. Single spacecraft have made measurements in this band, but cannot achieve high or even moderate angular resolution because a telescope's resolution ($\theta$) is set by $\theta = \lambda/D$, where $\lambda$ is the wavelength and $D$ is the telescope diameter. For wavelengths that range from tens of meters to kilometers, a telescope must be hundreds of meters to many kilometers in diameter for even moderate resolution. The Great Observatory for Long Wavelengths (GO-LoW) is an interferometric mega-constellation space telescope operating between 300 kHz and 15 MHz. In a departure from the traditional approach of a single, large, expensive spacecraft (e.g., HST, Chandra, JWST), GO-LoW is an interferometric Great Observatory comprising thousands of small, inexpensive, and reconfigurable nodes. A distributed constellation of sensing elements provides (1) reliability and robustness to failures, (2) longevity by allowing for growth over time and infusion of new technology via staged replacement of nodes, (3) reduced costs through leveraging mass production, and (4) formation reconfigurability to optimize the observatory for diverse science cases. A low-frequency mega-constellation revolutionizes a number of compelling science cases: high-resolution all-sky mapping, Dark Ages/Epoch of Reionization cosmology, interstellar medium mapping, solar/planetary magnetic activity, and exoplanetary magnetospheric radio emission. Abstract

We show that common choices of kernel functions for a highly accurate and massively scalable nearest-neighbour based GP regression model (GPnn: \cite{GPnn}) exhibit gradual convergence to asymptotic behaviour as dataset-size $n$ increases. For isotropic kernels such as Mat\'{e}rn and squared-exponential, an upper bound on the predictive MSE can be obtained as $O(n^{-\frac{p}{d}})$ for input dimension $d$, $p$ dictated by the kernel (and $d>p$) and fixed number of nearest-neighbours $m$ with minimal assumptions on the input distribution. Similar bounds can be found under model misspecification and combined to give overall rates of convergence of both MSE and an important calibration metric. We show that lower bounds on $n$ can be given in terms of $m$, $l$, $p$, $d$, a tolerance $\varepsilon$ and a probability $\delta$. When $m$ is chosen to be $O(n^{\frac{p}{p+d}})$ minimax optimal rates of convergence are attained. Abstract

The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

37. Career Shifts of Professionals Who Transitioned into Careers in Academic Organizations

Abstract

This paper summarizes the results of a qualitative study focused on the career shifts of professionals who previously worked in non-academic organizations and transitioned into academic careers. It explores the factors that influence the decision of professionals to reinvent themselves as career academics as well as their level of satisfaction with their career shifts. The paper provides the results of a survey that was conducted with 336 survey respondents coming from an online university, an on-ground state university, a community college and a LinkedIn group focused on education. The results of the survey indicate that 90% of the respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with their new academic career and the reasons for their career changes are detailed. Gaining an understanding of why professionals decide to transition to academia and their satisfaction with their transition will be useful for talent acquisition and retention in higher education organizations as well as being helpful for those professionals who are considering making the transition to academia.

Abstract

We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. Given the magnitude of the shifts and the data sample size, the statistical significance of the improvement of data description using the modifications considered in the paper is larger than $5\sigma$ even for any linear combination of experimental systematic uncertainties., Comment: Published version

Abstract

The fusion of non-Abelian anyons or topological defects is a fundamental operation in measurement-only topological quantum computation. In topological superconductors, this operation amounts to a determination of the shared fermion parity of Majorana zero modes. As a step towards this, we implement a single-shot interferometric measurement of fermion parity in indium arsenide-aluminum heterostructures with a gate-defined nanowire. The interferometer is formed by tunnel-coupling the proximitized nanowire to quantum dots. The nanowire causes a state-dependent shift of these quantum dots' quantum capacitance of up to 1 fF. Our quantum capacitance measurements show flux h/2e-periodic bimodality with a signal-to-noise ratio of 1 in 3.7 $\mu$s at optimal flux values. From the time traces of the quantum capacitance measurements, we extract a dwell time in the two associated states that is longer than 1 ms at in-plane magnetic fields of approximately 2 T. These results are consistent with a measurement of the fermion parity encoded in a pair of Majorana zero modes that are separated by approximately 3 $\mu$m and subjected to a low rate of poisoning by non-equilibrium quasiparticles. Abstract

The characterization of interactions between autophagy modifiers (Atg8-family proteins) and their natural ligands (peptides and proteins) or small molecules is important for a detailed understanding of selective autophagy mechanisms and for design of potential Atg8 inhibitors that affect the autophagy processes in cells. The fluorescence polarization (FP) assay is a rapid, cost-effective and robust method which provides affinity and selectivity information of small molecules and peptide ligands targeting human Atg8 proteins. This chapter introduces the basic principles of FP assays are introduced. In addition, a case study for FP small molecule and peptide interactions with human Atg8 proteins (LC3/GABARAPs) is described. Finally, data analysis and quality control of FP studies are discussed for the proper calculation of Ki values of the measured compounds.

41. Genetic gains underpinning a little-known strawberry Green Revolution.

Abstract

The annual production of strawberry has increased by one million tonnes in the US and 8.4 million tonnes worldwide since 1960. Here we show that the US expansion was driven by genetic gains from Green Revolution breeding and production advances that increased yields by 2,755%. Using a California population with a century-long breeding history and phenotypes of hybrids observed in coastal California environments, we estimate that breeding has increased fruit yields by 2,974-6,636%, counts by 1,454-3,940%, weights by 228-504%, and firmness by 239-769%. Using genomic prediction approaches, we pinpoint the origin of the Green Revolution to the early 1950s and uncover significant increases in additive genetic variation caused by transgressive segregation and phenotypic diversification. Lastly, we show that the most consequential Green Revolution breeding breakthrough was the introduction of photoperiod-insensitive, PERPETUAL FLOWERING hybrids in the 1970s that doubled yields and drove the dramatic expansion of strawberry production in California.

42. Expression and potential regulatory functions of Drosophila octopamine receptors in the female reproductive tract.

Abstract

Aminergic signaling is known to play a critical role in regulating female reproductive processes in both mammals and insects. In Drosophila, the ortholog of noradrenaline, octopamine, is required for ovulation as well as several other female reproductive processes. Two octopamine receptors have already been shown to be expressed in the Drosophila reproductive tract and to be required for egg-laying: OAMB and Octβ2R. The Drosophila genome contains 4 additional octopamine receptors-Octα2R, Octβ1R, Octβ3R, and Oct-TyrR-but their cellular patterns of expression in the reproductive tract and potential contribution(s) to egg-laying are not known. In addition, the mechanisms by which OAMB and Octβ2R regulate reproduction are incompletely understood. Using a panel of MiMIC Gal4 lines, we show that Octα2R, Octβ1R, Octβ3R, and Oct-TyrR receptors are not detectable in either epithelium or muscle but are clearly expressed in neurons within the female fly reproductive tract. Optogenetic activation of neurons that express at least 3 types of octopamine receptors stimulates contractions in the lateral oviduct. We also find that octopamine stimulates calcium transients in the sperm storage organs and that its effects in spermathecal, secretory cells, can be blocked by knock-down of OAMB. These data extend our understanding of the pathways by which octopamine regulates egg-laying in Drosophila and raise the possibility that multiple octopamine receptor subtypes could play a role in this process.

43. Caller identification and characterization of individual humpback whale acoustic behaviour.

Abstract

Acoustic recording tags provide fine-scale data linking acoustic signalling with individual behaviour; however, when an animal is in a group, it is challenging to tease apart calls of conspecifics and identify which individuals produce each call. This, in turn, prohibits a robust assessment of individual acoustic behaviour including call rates and silent periods, call bout production within and between individuals, and caller location. To overcome this challenge, we simultaneously instrumented small groups of humpback whales on a western North Atlantic feeding ground with sound and movement recording tags. This approach enabled a comparison of the relative amplitude of each call across individuals to infer caller identity for 97% of calls. We recorded variable call rates across individuals (mean = 23 calls/h) and groups (mean = 55 calls/h). Calls were produced throughout dives, and most calls were produced in bouts with short inter-call intervals of 2.2 s. Most calls received a likely response from a conspecific within 100 s. This caller identification (ID) method facilitates studying both individual- and group-level acoustic behaviour, yielding novel results about the nature of sequence production and vocal exchanges in humpback whale social calls. Future studies can expand on these caller ID methods for understanding intra-group communication across taxa.

44. A modular bisimulation characterisation for fragments of hybrid logic

Abstract

There are known characterisations of several fragments of hybrid logic by means of invariance under bisimulations of some kind. The fragments include $\{\store, \jump\}$ with or without nominals (Areces, Blackburn, Marx), $\jump$ with or without nominals (ten Cate), and $\store$ without nominals (Hodkinson, Tahiri). Some pairs of these characterisations, however, are incompatible with one another. For other fragments of hybrid logic no such characterisations were known so far. We prove a generic bisimulation characterisation theorem for all standard fragments of hybrid logic, in particular for the case with $\store$ and nominals, left open by Hodkinson and Tahiri. Our characterisation is built on a common base and for each feature extension adds a specific condition, so it is modular in an engineering sense.

45. Grade restriction and D-brane transport for a non-abelian GLSM of an elliptic curve

Abstract

We discuss a simple model for D-brane transport in non-abelian GLSMs. The model is the elliptic curve version of a non-abelian GLSM introduced by Hori and Tong and has gauge group U(2). It has two geometric phases, both of which describe the same elliptic curve, once realised as a codimension five complete intersection in G(2,5) and once as a determinantal variety. The determinantal phase is strongly coupled with unbroken SU(2). There are two singular points in the moduli space where the theory has a Coulomb branch. Using grade restriction rules, we show how to transport B-branes between the two phases along paths avoiding the singular points. 46. Moving beyond Data Collection: Fostering Community Engagement in Community Music Schools

Abstract

Mission-driven nonprofit organizations sometimes struggle within a cycle of disempowerment resulting from oversaturation of data collection that is reactive to funder demands. In this article, we problematize Community Music School (CMS) data-collection and analysis efforts and discuss alternate approaches to learning about family and community desires and building community engagement. We first review literature on CMS goals, CMS engagement with communities, and the importance of student voice in educational research. Then, we briefly describe secondary analysis of a data subset from a previous study as context for critical discussion. Finally, drawing on literature from communications, urban planning, and school-family engagement, we make broader suggestions for how CMS can transform data collection practices into pathways for community engagement. We assert data quality and usefulness may improve when institutions seek input from community members who have not elected to participate and when CMS involve stakeholders in program design, goal setting, and measurement schemes from the outset. To that end, we describe three frameworks that could help CMS improve community engagement and make suggestions for future research.

47. Mentor and Novice Teacher Co-Learning to Promote Student Engagement and Participation

Abstract

This design research study describes how one mentor teacher-teacher candidate dyad co-learned to promote student engagement and participation through using a "Collaborative Learning Structure" (CLS) tool that we are developing. We share how the dyad used the CLS, with support from a professional development facilitator and fellow teachers, to better identify student assets (a critical component of promoting student engagement and participation). Our analysis demonstrates that (1) co-noticing is a productive means of supporting dyad co-learning to promote student engagement and participation and (2) teachers need to co-learn across time while using tools supportive of their learning. We discuss implications for how to support teachers in promoting student engagement and participation. [For the complete proceedings, see ED658295.]

48. Implications of Remote Work for Co-Operative Education Students' Workplace Friendships

Abstract

Workplace friendships have been linked to important employment outcomes. With the rise in remote work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences, there is concern about the implications of work mode for students' workplace relationships. Using a survey of co-operative education students, this study explored differences in the development of workplace friendships between work modes and the consequences of those friendships. Results suggest that students are more likely to develop friendships when they work in-person rather than remotely. Informal socialization occurred less in remote work, which partially explained why remote workers reported fewer friendships. Workplace friendships with organization members--but not fellow students--were positively associated with job satisfaction, career development, organizational commitment, and conversion intention. These findings indicate that remote work has implications for friendship development and the quality of a WIL experience. WIL stakeholders offering remote work should consider informal socialization opportunities to strengthen workplace friendships and improve the quality of WIL experiences.
