- Abstract
This thesis is a study in the relationship between truth and reality in documentaries. There’s a common understanding, that a documentary is a reproduction of reality. But what part does the truth play if not only for the understanding, but also the interpretation? A documentary should be observing and facilitating knowledge and you should both as director and viewer act like a fly on the wall to not disturb the story being told. The genre has developed through time and today there’s still not a clear definition of, what documentaries really is. The concept of documentaries is no longer only the classic definition, it’s so much more. And that is why reality and truth have to combine in a new relationship. In order to clarify the two definitions, we are taking a closer look at the documentaries Testamentet and Blekingegadebanden. Both of which illustrates their relation to reality. The two directors provide us in two separately interviews, with details on the making of the films. They’ve presented and defended their choices and in that manner shown us their truth. These statements are compared to the interpretations of the selected audience. And thereby we have been able to identify, whether there is a match or not. Four viewers have watched to two documentaries, and in eight interviews contributed with their point of views and considerations, which the directors may not necessarily have been paying attention to. It has given us an interesting discussion of the importance of the semiotic signs and symbols. A theory we’ve used as an analytic tool, in order to not only identify, but also interpret the two documentaries relations to reality. The semiotic approach has provided us with a part of the answer. The question is, whether the development of the genre has created a new kind of truth and a different interpretation of reality. It is now clear, that the uninterpreted reality appears as neutral and objective, while the interpreted truth has a kind of filter placed ov
