Search

The spectrum of electromagnetic waves in periodic linear structures, such as periodic waveguides or chains of microelements i.e. spheres, cavities, exhibit the sequence of stop bands for propagating waves. Breaking the translational symmetry of the periodic microstrip can also lead to the localization of the microwaves at the microstrip edge. In this paper, we investigated periodic microstrip transmission line represented as 1D photonic crystal operating at the GHz frequencies. On the ground of topology, we explain the condition of surface state existence. The transmission measurements and numerical calculations support our theoretical predictions. Moreover, we show that in the symmetric microstrip the surface states split into symmetric and antisymmetric modes due to evanescent wave coupling between the modes localized on the opposite sides of the microstrip. Magnonics is a field of science that addresses the physical properties of spin waves and utilizes them for data processing. Scalability down to atomic dimensions, operations in the GHz-to-THz frequency range, utilization of nonlinear and nonreciprocal phenomena, and compatibility with CMOS are just a few of many advantages offered by magnons. Although magnonics is still primarily positioned in the academic domain, the scientific and technological challenges of the field are being extensively investigated, and many proof-of-concept prototypes have already been realized in laboratories. This roadmap is a product of the collective work of many authors that covers versatile spin-wave computing approaches, conceptual building blocks, and underlying physical phenomena. In particular, the roadmap discusses the computation operations with Boolean digital data, unconventional approaches like neuromorphic computing, and the progress towards magnon-based quantum computing. The article is organized as a collection of sub-sections grouped into seven large thematic sections. Perfectly controlled molecules are at the forefront of the quest to explore chemical reactivity at ultra low temperatures. Here, we investigate for the first time the formation of the long-lived intermediates in the time-dependent scattering of cold bialkali $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules with and without the presence of infrared trapping light. During the nearly 50 nanoseconds mean collision time of the intermediate complex, we observe unconventional roaming when for a few tens of picoseconds either NaRb or Na$_2$ and Rb$_2$ molecules with large relative separation are formed before returning to the four-atom complex. We also determine the likelihood of molecular loss when the trapping laser is present during the collision. We find that at a wavelength of 1064 nm the Na$_2$Rb$_2$ complex is quickly destroyed and thus that the $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules are rapidly lost., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

In Ni80Fe20/Au/Co/Au deposited on silicon substrate the interaction between spin waves and surface acoustic waves is observed by Brillion light scattering spectroscopy. We show that by changing the number of receptions in the multilayer we can tune the dispersion of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) not affecting significantly fundamentals spin wave (SW) mode. As a result, we can control (activate or deactivate) the magnetoelastic interaction between fundamental SW mode and SAWs by the thickness of the magnetostrictive multilayer., Comment: rejected from Journal

We present a method for efficient spin wave guiding within the magnonic nanostructures. Our technique is based on the anomalous refraction in the metamaterial flat slab. The gradual change of the material parameters (saturation magnetization or magnetic anisotropy) across the slab allows tilting the wavefronts of the transmitted spin waves and controlling the refraction. Numerical studies of the spin wave refraction are preceded by the analytical calculations of the phase shift acquired by the spin wave due to the change of material parameters in a confined area. We demonstrate that our findings can be used to guide the spin waves smoothly in curved waveguides, even through sharp bends, without reflection and scattering between different waveguide's modes, preserving the phase -- the quantity essential for wave computing.

The one-dimensional planar magnonic crystals are usually fabricated as a sequence of stripes intentionally or accidentally separated by non-magnetic spacers. The influence of spacers on shaping the spin wave spectra is complex and still not completely clarified. We performed the detailed numerical studies of the one-dimensional single- and bi-component magnonic crystals comprised of a periodic array of thin ferromagnetic stripes separated by non-magnetic spacers. We showed that the dynamic dipolar interactions between the stripes mediated by non-magnetic spacer, even ultra-narrow, significantly shift up the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance and simultaneously reduce the spin wave group velocity, which is manifested by the flattening of the magnonic band. We attributed these changes in the spectra to the modifications of dipolar pinning and shape anisotropy both dependent on the width of the spacers and the thickness of the stripes, as well as to the dynamical magnetic volume charges formed due to inhomogeneous spin wave amplitude.

We investigated the lifetime of spin wave eigenmodes in periodic and quasiperiodic sequences of Py and Co wires. Those materials differ significantly in damping coefficients, therefore, the spatial distribution of the mode amplitude within the structure is important for the lifetime of collective spin wave excitations. Modes of the lower frequencies prefer to concentrate in Py wires, because of the lower FMR frequency for this material. This inhomogeneous distribution of amplitude of modes (with lower amplitude in material of higher damping and with higher amplitude in material of lower damping) is preferable for extending the lifetime of the collective excitations beyond the volume average of lifetimes for solid materials. We established the relation between the profile of the mode and its lifetime for periodic and quasiperiodic structures. We performed also the comparative studies in order to find the differences resulting from complexity of the structure and enhancement of localization in quasiperiodic system on the lifetime of spin waves., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Using spatial light interference of ultrafast laser pulses, we generate a lateral modulation in the magnetization profile of an otherwise uniformly magnetized film, whose magnetic excitation spectrum is monitored via the coherent and resonant interaction with elastic waves. We find an unusual dependence of the magnetoelastic coupling as the externally applied magnetic field is angle- and field-tuned relative to the wave vector of the magnetization modulation, which can be explained by the emergence of spatially inhomogeneous spin-wave modes. In this regard, the spatial light interference methodology can be seen as a user-configurable, temporally windowed, on-demand magnonic crystal, potentially of arbitrary two-dimensional shape, which allows control and selectivity of the spatial distribution of spin waves. Calculations of spin waves using a variety of methods, demonstrated here using the plane-wave method and micromagnetic simulation, can identify the spatial distribution and associated energy scales of each excitation, which opens the door to a number of excitation methodologies beyond our chosen elastic wave excitation.

We present a theoretical investigation of the Goos-H\"anchen effect, i.e., the lateral shift of the light beam transmitted through one-dimensional biperiodic multilayered photonic systems consisting of equidistantmagnetic layers separated by finite size dielectric photonic crystals. We show that the increase of the number of periods in the photonic-magnonic structure leads to increase of the Goos-H\"anchen shift in the vicinity of the frequencies of defect modes located inside the photonic band gaps. Presence of the linear magnetoelectric coupling in the magnetic layers can result in a vanishing of the positive maxima of the cross-polarized contribution to the Goos-H\"anchen shift., Comment: 15 pages

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the magnetization reversal process in one-dimensional magnonic structures composed of permalloy nanowires of the two different widths and finite length arranged in a periodic and quasiperiodic order. The main features of the hysteresis loop are determined by different shape anisotropies of the component elements and the dipolar interactions between them. We showed, that the dipolar interactions between nanowires forming a ribbon can be controlled by change a distance between the neighboring ribbons. The quasiperiodic order can influence the hysteresis loop by introduction additional tiny switching steps when the dipolar interactions are sufficiently strong., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Nanoscale magnetic systems have been studied extensively in various geometries, such as wires of different cross-sections, arrays of wires, dots, rings, etc. Such systems have interesting physical properties and promising applications in advanced magnetic devices. Uniform magnetic nanowires are the basic structures which were broadly investigated. However, some of their dynamical properties, like: (anti)crossing between the spin wave modes and impact of the magnetic field on spin wave spectrum, still need to be exploited. We continue this research by investigation of the spin wave dynamics in solid Ni nanowire of the circular cross-section. We use two approaches: semi-analytical calculations and numerical computations based on finite element method. We solve coupled Landau-Lifshitz and Maxwell equations and consider both magnetostatic and exchange interactions. We identify the dispersion brunches and its (anti)crossing by plotting the spatial profiles of spin wave amplitudes and magnetostatic potential. We also check how we can tune the spectrum of the modes by application of the external magnetic field and how it affects the modes and their dominating type of interaction., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

We have investigated multifunctional periodic structures in which electromagnetic waves and spin waves can be confined in the same areas. Such simultaneous localization of both sorts of excitations can potentially enhance the interaction between electromagnetic waves and spin waves. The system we considered has a form of one dimensional photonic-magnonic crystal with two types of magnetic layers (thicker and thinner ones) separated by sections of the dielectric photonic crystals. We focused on the electromagnetic defect modes localized in the magnetic layers (areas where spin waves can be exited) and decaying in the sections of conventional (nonmagnetic) photonic crystals. We showed how the change of relative thickness of two types of the magnetic layers can influence on the spectrum of spin waves and electromagnetic defect modes, both localized in magnetic parts of the system., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

We have investigated theoretically band structure of spin waves in magnonic crystals with periodicity in one-(1D), two- (2D) and three-dimensions (3D). We have solved Landau-Lifshitz equation with the use of plane wave method, finite element method in frequency domain and micromagnetic simulations in time domain to find the dynamics of spin waves and spectrum of their eigenmodes. The spin wave spectra were calculated in linear approximation. In this paper we show usefulness of these methods in calculations of various types of spin waves. We demonstrate the surface character of the Damon-Eshbach spin wave in 1D magnonic crystals and change of its surface localization with the band number and wavenumber in the first Brillouin zone. The surface property of the spin wave excitation is further exploited by covering plate of the magnonic crystal with conductor. The band structure in 2D magnonic crystals is complex due to additional spatial inhomogeneity introduced by the demagnetizing field. This modifies spin wave dispersion, makes the band structure of magnonic crystals strongly dependent on shape of the inclusions and type of the lattice. The inhomogeneity of the internal magnetic field becomes unimportant for magnonic crystals with small lattice constant, where exchange interactions dominate. For 3D magnonic crystals, characterized by small lattice constant, wide magnonic band gap is found. We have investigated theoretically (with micromagnetic simulations and plane wave method) and experimentally (with ferromagnetic resonance and Brillouin light scattering) three types of antidot lattices (ADLs) based on permalloy thin films with increased complexity of the unit cell: simple square, bi-component square and wave-like ADL. We have found that placing a small additional antidot in the center of the unit cell of the square ADL modify significantly the spin wave spectrum and its dependence on the orientation of the in-plane magnetic field. We also check the further changes of spin wave spectrum resulting from the introduction of air-gaps connecting small and large antidots. In particular, the presence of small antidots change the dependence of the frequency of the fundamental mode on the angle of the in-plane applied magnetic field. The air-gaps strongly discriminates the propagation of spin waves in two principal direction of ADL lattice, orthogonal to each other. In spite of these spectral changes, the spatial distribution of the spin wave amplitude generally preserves some similarities for all three structures. We also highlighted out the role of defects in the ADL in the observed spectra. We studied finite Fibonacci sequence of Co and Py stripes aligned side-by-side and in direct contact with each other. Calculations based on continuous model including exchange and dipole interactions were performed for structures feasible for fabrication and characterization of main properties of magnonic quasicrystals. We have shown the fractal structure of the magnonic spectrum with a number of magnonics gaps of different width. Also localization of spin waves in quasicrystals and existence of surface spin waves in finite quaiscrystal structure is demonstrated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The rate constants required to model the OH$^+$ observations in different regions of the interstellar medium have been determined using state of the art quantum methods. First, state-to-state rate constants for the H$_2(v=0,J=0,1)$+ O$^+$($^4S$) $\rightarrow$ H + OH$^+(X ^3\Sigma^-, v', N)$ reaction have been obtained using a quantum wave packet method. The calculations have been compared with time-independent results to asses the accuracy of reaction probabilities at collision energies of about 1 meV. The good agreement between the simulations and the existing experimental cross sections in the $0.01-$1 eV energy range shows the quality of the results. The calculated state-to-state rate constants have been fitted to an analytical form. Second, the Einstein coefficients of OH$^+$ have been obtained for all astronomically significant ro-vibrational bands involving the $X^3\Sigma^-$ and/or $A^3\Pi$ electronic states. For this purpose the potential energy curves and electric dipole transition moments for seven electronic states of OH$^+$ are calculated with {\it ab initio} methods at the highest level and including spin-orbit terms, and the rovibrational levels have been calculated including the empirical spin-rotation and spin-spin terms. Third, the state-to-state rate constants for inelastic collisions between He and OH$^+(X ^3\Sigma^-)$ have been calculated using a time-independent close coupling method on a new potential energy surface. All these rates have been implemented in detailed chemical and radiative transfer models. Applications of these models to various astronomical sources show that inelastic collisions dominate the excitation of the rotational levels of OH$^+$. In the models considered the excitation resulting from the chemical formation of OH$^+$ increases the line fluxes by about 10 % or less depending on the density of the gas.

We present the observation of a complete bandgap and collective spin wave excitation in two-dimensional magnonic crystals comprised of arrays of nanoscale antidots and nanodots, respectively. Considering that the frequencies dealt with here fall in the microwave band, these findings can be used for the development of suitable magnonic metamaterials and spin wave based signal processing. We also present the application of a numerical procedure, to compute the dispersion relations of spin waves for any high symmetry direction in the first Brillouin zone. The results obtained from this procedure has been reproduced and verified by the well established plane wave method for an antidot lattice, when magnetization dynamics at antidot boundaries is pinned. The micromagnetic simulation based method can also be used to obtain iso--frequency countours of spin waves. Iso--frequency contours are analougous of the Fermi surfaces and hence, they have the potential to radicalize our understanding of spin wave dynamics. The physical origin of bands, partial and full magnonic bandgaps has been explained by plotting the spatial distribution of spin wave energy spectral density. Although, unfettered by rigid assumptions and approximations, which afflict most analytical methods used in the study of spin wave dynamics, micromagnetic simulations tend to be computationally demanding. Thus, the observation of collective spin wave excitation in the case of nanodot arrays, which can obviate the need to perform simulations may also prove to be valuable.

We theoretically study the spin-wave spectra in magnonic waveguides periodically patterned with square anti-dots in nanoscale with pinned magnetization at the edges. We show that the breaking of the mirror symmetry of the waveguide by the structural changes can result in a magnonic band gap closing. These intrinsic symmetry breaking can be compensated by properly chosen asymmetric external bias magnetic field, i.e. in an extrinsic way. As a result the magnonic gaps existing in the ideal symmetric structure can be recovered. The model used for the explanation also suggests that this idea could be generic both for exchange and dipolar interaction regimes of spin-waves and also for other types of waves, e.g., electrons in the graphene ribbons., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The prospects of sympathetic cooling of polar molecules with magnetically co-trapped alkali-metal atoms are generally considered poor due to strongly anisotropic atom-molecule interactions leading to large spin relaxation rates. Using rigorous quantum scattering calculations based on ab initio interaction potentials, we show that inelastic spin relaxation in low-temperature collisions of CaH(2Sigma) molecules with Li and Mg atoms occurs at a slow rate despite the strongly anisotropic interactions. This unexpected result, which we rationalize using multichannel quantum defect theory, opens up the possibility of sympathetic cooling of polar 2Sigma molecules with alkali-metal and alkaline-earth atoms in a magnetic trap., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 0 tables

We present the first astronomical detection of a diatomic negative ion, the cyanide anion CN-, as well as quantum mechanical calculations of the excitation of this anion through collisions with para-H2. CN- is identified through the observation of the J = 2-1 and J = 3-2 rotational transitions in the C-star envelope IRC +10216 with the IRAM 30-m telescope. The U-shaped line profiles indicate that CN-, like the large anion C6H-, is formed in the outer regions of the envelope. Chemical and excitation model calculations suggest that this species forms from the reaction of large carbon anions with N atoms, rather than from the radiative attachment of an electron to CN, as is the case for large molecular anions. The unexpectedly large abundance derived for CN-, 0.25 % relative to CN, makes likely its detection in other astronomical sources. A parallel search for the small anion C2H- remains so far unconclusive, despite the previous tentative identification of the J = 1-0 rotational transition. We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of collision-induced dipolar relaxation in a cold spin-polarized gas of atomic nitrogen (N). We use buffer gas cooling to create trapped samples of 14N and 15N atoms with densities 5+/-2 x 10^{12} cm-3 and measure their magnetic relaxation rates at milli-Kelvin temperatures. Rigorous quantum scattering calculations based on accurate ab initio interaction potentials for the 7Sigma_u electronic state of N2 demonstrate that dipolar relaxation in N + N collisions occurs at a slow rate of ~10^{-13} cm3/s over a wide range of temperatures (1 mK to 1 K) and magnetic fields (10 mT to 2 T). The calculated dipolar relaxation rates are insensitive to small variations of the interaction potential and to the magnitude of the spin-exchange interaction, enabling the accurate calibration of the measured N atom density. We find consistency between the calculated and experimentally determined rates. We present a comparative study of the density dependence of the conductivity of graphene sheets calculated in the tight-binding (TB) Landauer approach and on the basis of the Boltzmann theory. The TB calculations are found to give the same density dependence of the conductivity, $\sigma \sim n$, for short-range and long-range Gaussian scatterers. In the case of short-range scattering the TB calculations are in agreement with the predictions of the Boltzmann theory going beyond the Born approximation, but in qualitative and quantitative disagreement with the standard Boltzmann approach within the Born approximation, predicting $\sigma= $ const. Even for the long-range Gaussian potential in a parameter range corresponding to realistic systems the standard Boltzmann predictions are in quantitative and qualitative disagreement with the TB results. This questions the applicability of the standard Boltzmann approach within the Born approximation, commonly used for the interpretation of the results of experimental studies of the transport in graphene., Comment: 5 pages

We have computed the electronic and hole spectra of a 3D superlattice consisting of layers of GaAs rods of finite height arranged in a hexagonal lattice and embedded in an AlGaAs matrix, alternating with spacer layers of homogeneous AlAs. The spectra are calculated in the envelope function approximation, with both light-hole and heavy-hole subbands and hole spin degeneracy taken into account. The application of thick spacers allows to investigate the band structure of isolated layers of cylindrical rods. We estimate the ultimate efficiency of solar energy conversion in a solar cell based on an array of cylindrical quantum dots versus the dot height, and determine the optimal value of this parameter., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study the effects of the long-range disorder potential and warping on the conductivity and mobility of graphene ribbons using the Landauer formalism and the tight-binding p-orbital Hamiltonian. We demonstrate that as the length of the structure increases the system undergoes a transition from the ballistic to the diffusive regime. This is reflected in the calculated electron density dependencies of the conductivity and the mobility. We consider quantum wire arrays consisting of GaAs rods embedded in Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As and disposed in sites of a square or triangular lattice. The electronic and hole spectra around the conduction band bottom and the valence band top are examined versus geometry of the lattice formed by the rods, concentration of Al in the matrix material, and structural parameters including the filling fraction and the lattice constant. Our calculations use the envelope function and are based on the effective-mass approximation. We show that the electronic and hole spectra resulting from the periodicity of the heterostructure, depend on the factors considered and that the effect of lattice geometry varies substantially with lattice constant. For low lattice constant values the minigaps are significantly wider in the case of triangular lattice, while for high lattice constant values wider minigaps occur in the square lattice-based arrays. We present an analytical theory for the gate electrostatics and the classical and quantum capacitance of the graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and compare it with the exact self-consistent numerical calculations based on the tight-binding p-orbital Hamiltonian within the Hartree approximation. We demonstrate that the analytical theory is in a good qualitative (and in some aspects quantitative) agreement with the exact calculations. There are however some important discrepancies. In order to understand the origin of these discrepancies we investigate the self-consistent electronic structure and charge density distribution in the nanoribbons and relate the above discrepancy to the inability of the simple electrostatic model to capture the classical gate electrostatics of the GNRs. In turn, the failure of the classical electrostatics is traced to the quantum mechanical effects leading to the significant modification of the self-consistent charge distribution in comparison to the non-interacting electron description. The role of electron-electron interaction in the electronic structure and the capacitance of the GNRs is discussed. Our exact numerical calculations show that the density distribution and the potential profile in the GNRs are qualitatively different from those in conventional split-gate quantum wires; at the same time, the electron distribution and the potential profile in the GNRs show qualitatively similar features to those in the cleaved-edge overgrown quantum wires. Using the zero-temperature Metropolis dynamics, the time decay of the remanent magnetization in the $\pm J$ Edward-Anderson spin glass model with a uniform random distribution of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions has been investigated. Starting from the saturation, the magnetization per spin $m$ reveals a slow decrease with time, which can be approximated by a power law:$m(t)=m_{\infty}+ ({t\over a_{0}})^{a_{1}}$, $a_{1} < 0$. Moreover, its relaxation does not lead it into one of the ground states, and therefore the system is trapped in metastable isoenergetic microstates remaining magnetized. A technique to measure the radiated acoustic intensity and transmission loss of panels is documented in this paper. This facility has been upgraded to include a test fixture that scans the acoustic intensity radiated from a panel on the anechoic receiving room side of the transmission loss window. The acoustic intensity incident on the panel from the reverberant side of the transmission loss window is estimated from measurements made using six stationary microphones in the reverberant source room. From the measured incident and radiated intensity, the sound power transmission loss is calculated. The setup of the facility and data acquisition system are documented. A transmission loss estimate of a typical panel is shown. The measurement-to-measurement and setup-to-setup repeatability of the transmission loss estimate are assessed. Conclusions are drawn about the ability to measure changes in transmission loss due to changes in panel construction.
