10. Remote sensing of river delta inundation: Exploiting the potential of coarse spatial resolution, temporally-dense MODIS time series

Abstract

River deltas belong to the most densely settled places on earth. Although they only account for 5% of the global land surface, over 550 million people live in deltas. These preferred livelihood locations, which feature flat terrain, fertile alluvial soils, access to fluvial and marine resources, a rich wetland biodiversity and other advantages are, however, threatened by numerous internal and external processes. Socio-economic development, urbanization, climate change induced sea level rise, as well as flood pulse changes due to upstream water diversion all lead to changes in these highly dynamic systems. A thorough understanding of a river delta's general setting and intra-annual as well as long-term dynamic is therefore crucial for an informed management of natural resources. Here, remote sensing can play a key role in analyzing and monitoring these vast areas at a global scale. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the potential of intra-annual time series analyses at dense temporal, but coarse spatial resolution for inundation characterization in five river deltas located in four different countries. Based on 250 m MODIS reflectance data we analyze inundation dynamics in four densely populated Asian river deltas-namely the Yellow River Delta (China), the Mekong Delta (Vietnam), the Irrawaddy Delta (Myanmar), and the Ganges-Brahmaputra (Bangladesh, India)-as well as one very contrasting delta: the nearly uninhabited polar Mackenzie Delta Region in northwestern Canada for the complete time span of one year (2013). A complex processing chain of water surface derivation on a daily basis allows the generation of intra-annual time series, which indicate inundation duration in each of the deltas. Our analyses depict distinct inundation patterns within each of the deltas, which can be attributed to processes such as overland flooding, irrigation agriculture, aquaculture, or snowmelt and thermokarst processes. Clear differences between mid-latitude, subtropical, and polar deltas are illustrated, and the advantages and limitations of the approach for inundation derivation are discussed.

Abstract

Background: Data on perioperative chemotherapy in resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (rPDAC) are limited. NEONAX examined perioperative or adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel in rPDAC (National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria).Patients and methods: NEONAX is a prospective, randomized phase II trial with two independent experimental arms. One hundred twenty-seven rPDAC patients in 22 German centers were randomized 1 : 1 to perioperative (two preoperative and four post-operative cycles, arm A) or adjuvant (six cycles, arm B) gemcitabine (1000 mg/m2) and nabpaclitaxel (125 mg/m2) on days 1, 8 and 15 of a 28-day cycle.Results: The primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS) at 18 months in the modified intention-to-treat (ITT) population [R0/R1-resected patients who started neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CTX) (A) or adjuvant CTX (B)]. The predefined DFS rate of 55% at 18 months was not reached in both arms [A: 33.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 18.5% to 48.1%), B: 41.4% (95% CI 20.7% to 62.0%)]. Ninety percent of patients in arm A completed neoadjuvant treatment, and 42% of patients in arm B started adjuvant chemotherapy. R0 resection rate was 88% (arm A) and 67% (arm B), respectively. Median overall survival (mOS) (ITT population) as a secondary endpoint was 25.5 months (95% CI 19.7-29.7 months) in arm A and 16.7 months (95% CI 11.6-22.2 months) in the upfront surgery arm. This difference corresponds to a median DFS (mDFS) (ITT) of 11.5 months (95% CI 8.8-14.5 months) in arm A and 5.9 months (95% CI 3.6-11.5 months) in arm B. Treatment was safe and well tolerable in both arms.Conclusions: The primary endpoint, DFS rate of 55% at 18 months (mITT population), was not reached in either arm of the trial and numerically favored the upfront surgery arm B. mOS (ITT population), a secondary endpoint, numerically favored the neoadjuvant arm A [25.5 months (95% CI 19.7-29.7months); arm B 16.7 months (95% CI 11.6-22.2 months)]. Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with drug-eluting beads (DEB-TACE) is a promising new approach due to higher intratumoral and lower systemic concentration of the chemotherapeutic agent compared to conventional TACE (cTACE). Patients and methods: In a retrospective analysis, 32 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who received either DEB or a cTACE were compared regarding survival time, disease recurrence, and side effects such as pain and fever. Results: No significant differences could be detected between the cTACE and DEB-TACE groups with regard to mean hospital stay, appearance of postinterventional fever, or 30-day mortality. However, the application of intravenous analgesics as postinterventional pain medication was needed more often in patients treated with DEB-TACE (57.1% vs 12.5%, P=0.0281). The overall median survival after the initial procedure was 10.8 months in the cTACE group and 9.2 months in the DEB-TACE group, showing no significant difference. Conclusion: No survival benefit for patients treated with either DEB-TACE or cTACE was observed. Surprisingly, a higher rate of postinterventional pain could be detected after DEB-TACE. Item does not contain fulltext, We report a 53-year-old man who presented with acute renal failure. His medical history revealed a spondyloarthropathy, for which secukinumab was started recently, and a monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance. Kidney function deteriorated despite the withdrawal of secukinumab and dialysis was started. In the serum, type 1 cryoglobulins were present and a kidney biopsy showed ischaemic glomeruli, with thrombosis of the larger interlobular arteries. Other causes of thrombotic microangiopathy were excluded. Bone marrow immunophenotyping showed 1% monoclonal plasma cells. A diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance was made. Haematological treatment resulted in haematological and renal response.

Abstract

Introduction. We had worked persistently and in 1997, the first model of such a structure based on oligopeptides of horse albumin was revealed. We named this project and called Albuvir (combined from the word Albumin and the word virus) and applied in veterinary medicine, where viral infections represent more than 95% of all pathologies. In 2000 an application was filed for the first modification of this drug. Subsequently, for the production and sale of this product, registration certificates of the State Committees in Veterinary Medicine of Eastern European countries were obtained. In 2010, we signed a license agreement to transfer of limited rights in the field of veterinary medicine for the production and sale of Albuvir in Eastern Europe. The drug was produced commercially and was successfully used to cure hundreds of thousands of chickens, rabbits, sheeps, cows, pigs, pigeons, fish (industrial - sturgeon), cats, dogs, geese, ducks, and other types of farm birds and animals. Thus, the task of this work was to study the ability of Albuvir to inhibit EBV reproduction and induce apoptosis of latently infected cells in the culture. Materials and methods. Cell culture. The inhibitory effect of Albuvir on EBV was studied in the following cell cultures: Raji - cell culture of the B-phenotype of Burkitt's lymphoma. Namalwa is a B-phenotype cell culture from Burkitt's lymphoma that lacks the EBV genome. B95-8 is a marmoset monkey B-lymphocyte cell line containing the complete EBV genome, producing complete viral particles. To control cell viability, a 0.4% trypan blue dye (Sigma, United States) was used. EBV was isolated from a lymphoblastoid culture of B95-8 cells (B-lymphocytes of monkeys-marmazetka), which produces this virus, according to the method of Walls, Crawford. Investigated substances. Albuvir (N. 1) - dynamic acylated acidic peptides - antagonists of signal peptides of nuclear (nucleolar) localization and polyribosomes. Lysine tris-succinamide (N. 2). Acyclovir was used as a reference drug (references data) MTT test. The cytotoxic concentration was determined in the Raji lymphoblastoid cell system using the colorimetric MTT method. This method is widely used to determine the CC50 of potential drugs in the study of the cytopathic action of viruses in vitro. Raji cells were plated into 96 well culture plates, 100 μl per well, 25 μl MTT (final concentration 5 μg / ml) was added and incubated for 3 h at 37 ° C in an atmosphere of 5% CO2. After incubation, cells were washed with PBS and resuspended in 96% ethanol to dissolve formazan. The results were analyzed spectrophotometrically on a Dynatech reader (Sweden) at a wavelength of 540 nm. Polymerase chain reaction. The degree of influence of drugs on EBV reproduction was determined using PCR test systems "AmpliSens-100-R". A fragment encoding the VCA protein of the virus with a size of 290 nucleotide sequences was the chosen genome region of the Epstein-Barr virus. The control was cells that, after infection with the virus, were incubated in the growth medium without the addition of the substances that were studied. We determined the percentage of inhibition of the level of accumulation of viral DNA in the samples treated with the test substances in relation to the control sample, the value of which was taken as 100%. Results and discussion. Effect of the dynamic antiviral drug Albuvir on reproduction and apoptosis latently infected with the Epstein-Barr virus cells in vitro. Modern approaches to the treatment of herpes infection, in particular the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), include the use of ethyotropic drugs, as well as sensitizing therapy. The range of drugs active against EBV remains very limited to ganciclovir and acyclovir. The search for new compounds active against EBV remains relevant. The aim of this study was to find out the anti-EBV activity of the drug Albuvir in Raji, B95-8, Namalwa lymphoblastoid cells. The cytotoxicity index (CC50) was determined, which was 3000 ug/mL, and the concentration of the drug that inhibits the reproduction of the virus (EC50) was 0.1 ug/mL. The ability of the drug Albuvir to inhibit the reproduction of the Epstein-Barr virus in all studied cell cultures was revealed. When the economic efficiency of creating static drugs in accordance with the S-shaped curve decreases, the need arises for a transition to a supersystem, namely, the creation of dynamic drugs systems. It has been proven that the drug Albuvir is able to inhibit the reproduction of the Epstein-Barr virus in Raji, B95-8 and Namalwa cell cultures. Abstract

The intensity interferometer utilizes the correlations between intensity fluctuations to measure the coherence between light waves. Correlating the intensities of the waves and not their amplitudes can overcome the main disadvantage of the Michelson stellar interferometer in a space environment. It is shown that intensity interferometry should be applicable to stellar sources as weak as 8th magnitude, using techniques that are theoretically feasible today. Two approaches are proposed for a global sky observation campaign while minimizing spacecraft fuel consumption. In the second approach the computational interferometry observation method is introduced, which enables an observation of the full sky from a single orbit. Moreover, control laws were designed to relocate a spacecraft into the required baseline and to maintain it. OCIS codes: 120.3180, 350.6090.
