This paper introduces a stochastic simulator for seismic uncertainty quantification, which is crucial for performance-based earthquake engineering. The proposed simulator extends the recently developed dimensionality reduction-based surrogate modeling method (DR-SM) to address high-dimensional ground motion uncertainties and the high computational demands associated with nonlinear response history analyses. By integrating physics-based dimensionality reduction with multivariate conditional distribution models, the proposed simulator efficiently propagates seismic input into multivariate response quantities of interest. The simulator can incorporate both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties and does not assume distribution models for the seismic responses. The method is demonstrated through three finite element building models subjected to synthetic and recorded ground motions. The proposed method effectively predicts multivariate seismic responses and quantifies uncertainties, including correlations among responses.

In this paper, we introduce Mask2Map, a novel end-to-end online HD map construction method designed for autonomous driving applications. Our approach focuses on predicting the class and ordered point set of map instances within a scene, represented in the bird's eye view (BEV). Mask2Map consists of two primary components: the Instance-Level Mask Prediction Network (IMPNet) and the Mask-Driven Map Prediction Network (MMPNet). IMPNet generates Mask-Aware Queries and BEV Segmentation Masks to capture comprehensive semantic information globally. Subsequently, MMPNet enhances these query features using local contextual information through two submodules: the Positional Query Generator (PQG) and the Geometric Feature Extractor (GFE). PQG extracts instance-level positional queries by embedding BEV positional information into Mask-Aware Queries, while GFE utilizes BEV Segmentation Masks to generate point-level geometric features. However, we observed limited performance in Mask2Map due to inter-network inconsistency stemming from different predictions to Ground Truth (GT) matching between IMPNet and MMPNet. To tackle this challenge, we propose the Inter-network Denoising Training method, which guides the model to denoise the output affected by both noisy GT queries and perturbed GT Segmentation Masks. Our evaluation conducted on nuScenes and Argoverse2 benchmarks demonstrates that Mask2Map achieves remarkable performance improvements over previous state-of-the-art methods, with gains of 10.1% mAP and 4.1 mAP, respectively. While existing motion style transfer methods are effective between two motions with identical content, their performance significantly diminishes when transferring style between motions with different contents. This challenge lies in the lack of clear separation between content and style of a motion. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel motion style transformer that effectively disentangles style from content and generates a plausible motion with transferred style from a source motion. Our distinctive approach to achieving the goal of disentanglement is twofold: (1) a new architecture for motion style transformer with `part-attentive style modulator across body parts' and `Siamese encoders that encode style and content features separately'; (2) style disentanglement loss. Our method outperforms existing methods and demonstrates exceptionally high quality, particularly in motion pairs with different contents, without the need for heuristic post-processing. The pyrochlore iridates have become ideal platforms to unravel fascinating correlated and topolog?ical phenomena that stem from the intricate interplay among strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, lattice with geometric frustration, and itinerancy of the 5d electrons. The all-in-all?out antiferromagnetic state, commonly considered as the magnetic ground state, can be dramatically altered in reduced dimensionality, leading to exotic or hidden quantum states inaccessible in bulk. Here, by means of magnetotransport, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering experiments, we discover an emergent quantum disordered state in (111) Y2Ir2O7 thin films (thickness less than 30 nm) per?sisting down to 5 K, characterized by dispersionless magnetic excitations. The anomalous Hall effect observed below an onset temperature near 135 K corroborates the presence of chiral short-range spin configurations expressed in non-zero scalar spin chirality, breaking the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. The origin of this chiral state is ascribed to the restoration of magnetic frustration on the pyrochlore lattice in lower dimensionality, where the competing exchange interactions together with enhanced quantum fluctuations suppress any long-range order and trigger spin-liquid-like behavior with degenerate ground-state manifold.

We introduce a method to construct a stochastic surrogate model from the results of dimensionality reduction in forward uncertainty quantification. The hypothesis is that the high-dimensional input augmented by the output of a computational model admits a low-dimensional representation. This assumption can be met by numerous uncertainty quantification applications with physics-based computational models. The proposed approach differs from a sequential application of dimensionality reduction followed by surrogate modeling, as we "extract" a surrogate model from the results of dimensionality reduction in the input-output space. This feature becomes desirable when the input space is genuinely high-dimensional. The proposed method also diverges from the Probabilistic Learning on Manifold, as a reconstruction mapping from the feature space to the input-output space is circumvented. The final product of the proposed method is a stochastic simulator that propagates a deterministic input into a stochastic output, preserving the convenience of a sequential "dimensionality reduction + Gaussian process regression" approach while overcoming some of its limitations. The proposed method is demonstrated through two uncertainty quantification problems characterized by high-dimensional input uncertainties.

It was shown earlier that applying a magnetic field during the growth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, also known as "field-alteration", induces significant changes to its structural, magnetic, and transport properties. However, the microscopic nature of these changes is enigmatic. In this study, we employed resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering, as well as Raman scattering, to investigate samples from two batches of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ grown in magnetic fields of different strengths. Our findings reveal that samples grown in a weaker magnetic field have similar magnetic order to non-altered samples, whereas those grown in a stronger field show a different stacking of weak in-plane ferromagnetic moments. Additionally, we observed significant softening and broadening of select Raman-active phonons in the field altered samples, with a stronger effect in the samples grown in the stronger field. We discuss insights that our results provide into the microscopic nature of field-alteration in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

Spin nematic (SN) is a magnetic analog of classical liquid crystals, a fourth state of matter exhibiting characteristics of both liquid and solid. Particularly intriguing is a valence-bond SN, in which spins are quantum entangled to form a multi-polar order without breaking time-reversal symmetry, but its unambiguous experimental realization remains elusive. Here, we establish a SN phase in the square-lattice iridate Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which approximately realizes a pseudospin one-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. Upon cooling, the transition into the SN phase at T$_C$ $\approx$ 263 K is marked by a divergence in the static spin quadrupole susceptibility extracted from our Raman spectra, and concomitant emergence of a collective mode associated with the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetries. The quadrupolar order persists in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase below T$_N$ $\approx$ 230 K, and becomes directly observable through its interference with the AF order in resonant x-ray diffraction, which allows us to uniquely determine its spatial structure. Further, we find using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering a complete breakdown of coherent magnon excitations at short-wavelength scales, suggesting a resonating-valence-bond-like quantum entanglement in the AF state. Quasimolecular orbitals in cluster Mott insulators provide a route to tailor exchange interactions, which may yield novel quantum phases of matter. We demonstrate the cluster Mott character of the lacunar spinel GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ta $L_3$ edge. Electrons are fully delocalized over Ta$_4$ tetrahedra, forming quasimolecular $J_{\rm tet}$=3/2 moments. The modulation of the RIXS intensity as function of the transferred momentum q allows us to determine the cluster wavefunction, which depends on competing intracluster hopping terms that mix states with different character. This mixed wavefunction is decisive for the macroscopic properties since it affects intercluster hopping and exchange interactions and furthermore renormalizes the effective spin-orbit coupling constant. To address the challenges of reliability analysis in high-dimensional probability spaces, this paper proposes a new metamodeling method that couples active subspace, heteroscedastic Gaussian process, and active learning. The active subspace is leveraged to identify low-dimensional salient features of a high-dimensional computational model. A surrogate computational model is built in the low-dimensional feature space by a heteroscedastic Gaussian process. Active learning adaptively guides the surrogate model training toward the critical region that significantly contributes to the failure probability. A critical trait of the proposed method is that the three main ingredients-active subspace, heteroscedastic Gaussian process, and active learning-are coupled to adaptively optimize the feature space mapping in conjunction with the surrogate modeling. This coupling empowers the proposed method to accurately solve nontrivial high-dimensional reliability problems via low-dimensional surrogate modeling. Finally, numerical examples of a high-dimensional nonlinear function and structural engineering applications are investigated to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Recently, an exciting discovery of orientation-dependent superconductivity was made in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interfaces of LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ (LAO/KTO) or EuO/KTaO$_3$ (EuO/KTO). The superconducting transition temperature can reach a $T_c$ of up to $\sim$ 2.2 K, which is significantly higher than its 3$d$ counterpart LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LAO/STO) with a $T_c$ of $\sim$ 0.2 K. However, the underlying origin remains to be understood. To uncover the nature of electrons in KTO-based interfaces, we employ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy (RIXS) to study LAO/KTO and EuO/KTO with different orientations. We reveal the absence of $dd$ orbital excitations in all the measured samples. Our RIXS results are well reproduced by calculations that considered itinerant $5d$ electrons hybridized with O $2p$ electrons. This suggests that there is a lack of localized Ta $5d^1$ electrons in KTO interface superconductors, which is consistent with the absence of magnetic hysteresis observed in magneto-resistance (MR) measurements. Spin-orbit coupling locks spin direction and spatial orientation and generates, in semi-classical magnets, a local spin easy-axis and associated ordering. Quantum spin-1/2's defy this fate: rather than spins becoming locally anisotropic, the spin-spin interactions do. Consequently interactions become dependent on the spatial orientation of bonds between spins, prime theoretical examples of which are Kitaev magnets. Bond-directional interactions imply the existence of bond-directional magnetic modes, predicted spin excitations that render crystallographically equivalent bonds magnetically inequivalent, which yet have remained elusive experimentally. Here we show that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering allows us to explicitly probe the bond-directional character of magnetic excitations. To do so, we use a scattering plane spanned by one bond and the corresponding spin component and scan a range of momentum transfer that encompasses multiple Brillouin zones. Applying this approach to Na$_2$IrO$_3$ we establish the different bond-directional characters of magnetic excitations at 10 meV and 45 meV. Predicting the future motion of dynamic agents is of paramount importance to ensuring safety and assessing risks in motion planning for autonomous robots. In this study, we propose a two-stage motion prediction method, called R-Pred, designed to effectively utilize both scene and interaction context using a cascade of the initial trajectory proposal and trajectory refinement networks. The initial trajectory proposal network produces M trajectory proposals corresponding to the M modes of the future trajectory distribution. The trajectory refinement network enhances each of the M proposals using 1) tube-query scene attention (TQSA) and 2) proposal-level interaction attention (PIA) mechanisms. TQSA uses tube-queries to aggregate local scene context features pooled from proximity around trajectory proposals of interest. PIA further enhances the trajectory proposals by modeling inter-agent interactions using a group of trajectory proposals selected by their distances from neighboring agents. Our experiments conducted on Argoverse and nuScenes datasets demonstrate that the proposed refinement network provides significant performance improvements compared to the single-stage baseline and that R-Pred achieves state-of-the-art performance in some categories of the benchmarks.

Coexistence of localized and extended excitations is central to the macroscopic properties of correlated materials. For 5d transition metal compounds, electron correlations alone generally do not lead to a metal-insulator (Mott) transition, with insulating behavior usually resulting from their coupling with magnetic ordering and/or structural distortions. 1$T$-TaS$_2$ is a prototypical example of such correlated insulating behavior, with a high-symmetry metallic phase transforming into a distorted, charge density wave (CDW) insulating state at low temperatures. The relevance of the localized electron physics at play in 3d compounds to these 5d transition metal compounds remains an open question. We resolved this standing controversy in 1$T$-TaS$_2$ combining resonant inelastic X-ray spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. We observed five electronic excitations arising from the interband transitions of the Ta 5d orbitals and the S 3p ligand state, with none of the excitations on the order of the Mott gap. These excitations cannot be explained within the framework of standard multiplet calculations that assume a localized wavefunction, but instead, are captured by a band theory framework accounting for the low symmetry of the crystal field in the CDW state. Our findings suggest that the electronic property of 1$T$-TaS$_2$ is dominated by both plasmonic quasiparticles and inter-band transitions associated with a Drude-type response, with no resonance associated with a putative Mott transition. Our discovery provides new insights into the electron localization and the onset of insulating behavior in 5d transition metal materials.

Iridates have attracted much interest in the last decade for their novel magnetism emerging in the limit of strong spin-orbit coupling and possible unconventional superconductivity. A standard for growing iridate single crystals has been the flux method using platinum crucibles. Here, we show that this widely used method compromises the sample quality by inclusion of platinum impurities. We find that Sr2IrO4 single crystals grown in iridium crucibles show remarkable differences from those grown in platinum crucibles in their sample characterizations using Raman spectroscopy, resistivity, magnetization, optical third harmonic generation, resonant X-ray diffraction, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements. In particular, we show that several peaks of sizable intensities disappear in the Raman spectra of samples free of platinum impurities, and a significantly larger activation energy is extracted from the resistivity data compared to previously reported values. Furthermore, we find no evidence of the previously reported glide symmetry breaking structural distortions and confirm the I41/acd space group of the lattice symmetry. Although the platinum impurities are not apparent in the magnetic properties and thus went unnoticed in the stoichiometric insulating phase for a long time, their effects can be much more detrimental to transport properties in chemically doped compounds. We propose a new transformer model for the task of unsupervised learning of skeleton motion sequences. The existing transformer model utilized for unsupervised skeleton-based action learning is learned the instantaneous velocity of each joint from adjacent frames without global motion information. Thus, the model has difficulties in learning the attention globally over whole-body motions and temporally distant joints. In addition, person-to-person interactions have not been considered in the model. To tackle the learning of whole-body motion, long-range temporal dynamics, and person-to-person interactions, we design a global and local attention mechanism, where, global body motions and local joint motions pay attention to each other. In addition, we propose a novel pretraining strategy, multi-interval pose displacement prediction, to learn both global and local attention in diverse time ranges. The proposed model successfully learns local dynamics of the joints and captures global context from the motion sequences. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) investigation of ultra-thin epitaxial films of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, and compare their low energy magnetic and spin-orbit excitations to those of their sister compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. Due to the 180$^\circ$ Ir-O-Ir bond, the bandwidth of the magnon and spin-orbiton is significantly larger in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, making it difficult to describe these two types of excitations as separate well-defined quasiparticles. Both types of excitations are found to be quite sensitive to the effect of epitaxial strain. In addition, we find that the d-level inversion observed in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is absent in Ba$_2$IrO$_4$, as predicted in recent theoretical studies. Our results illustrate that the magnetic properties of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ are substantially different from those of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, suggesting that these materials need to be examined more carefully with electron itinerancy taken into account., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir $\mathit{L_{\mathrm{3}}}$ edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double perovskite iridate single crystals, La$_{2}$$\mathit{M}$IrO$_{6}$ ($\mathit{M}$ = Co, Ni, and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at $\sim$ 42(6) meV and $\sim$ 35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3$\mathit{d}$ ions, La$_{2}$CoIrO$_{6}$ and La$_{2}$NiIrO$_{6}$, respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La$_{2}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ in which the 3$\mathit{d}$ ions are non-magnetic, suggesting the importance of 3$\mathit{d}$-5$\mathit{d}$ hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double perovskite iridates. Spin-orbit entangled pseudospins hold promise for a wide array of exotic magnetism ranging from a Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a Kitaev spin liquid depending on the lattice and bonding geometry, but many of the host materials suffer from lattice distortions and deviate from idealized models in part due to inherent strong pseudospin-lattice coupling. Here, we report on the synthesis of a magnetic superlattice comprising the single ($n$=1) and the double ($n$=2) layer members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ alternating along the $c$-axis, and provide a comprehensive study of its lattice and magnetic structures using scanning transmission electron microscopy, resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering, third harmonic generation measurements and Raman spectroscopy. The superlattice is free of the structural distortions reported for the parent phases and has a higher point group symmetry, while preserving the magnetic orders and pseudospin dynamics inherited from the parent phases, featuring two magnetic transitions with two symmetry-distinct orders. We infer weaker pseudospin-lattice coupling from the analysis of Raman spectra and attribute it to frustrated magnetic-elastic couplings. Thus, the superlattice expresses a near ideal network of effective spin-one-half moments on a square lattice.

Several experiments have been conducted in the YangYang Underground Laboratory in the Republic of Korea such as the search for dark matter and the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, which require an extremely low background event rate due to the detector system and the environment. In underground experiments, neutrons have been identified as one of the background sources. The neutron flux in the experimental site needs to be determined to design a proper shielding system and for precise background estimation. We measured the neutron spectrum with a Bonner sphere spectrometer, with Helium-3 ($^{3}$He) proportional counters. The neutron flux at the underground laboratory was so low that the radioactive decays from the radioisotopes contained in the detector created a significant background interference to the neutron measurement. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the intrinsic $\alpha$ background distribution due to the radioactive isotopes in the detector materials, was estimated. The neutron count rate of each Bonner sphere was measured from the pulse height spectrum of the $^{3}$He proportional counter, after subtracting the $\alpha$ particle background. The neutron flux and the energy spectrum were determined using the unfolding technique. The total neutron flux measured was (4.46 $\pm$ 0.66) $\times$ $10^{-5}$ $\rm{cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$, and the thermal and fast neutron flux (in the range 1 to 10 MeV) were (1.44 $\pm$ 0.15) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ $\rm{cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$ and (0.71 $\pm$ 0.10) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ $\rm{cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$, respectively.

The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low-temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16meV. A 2T magnetic field softens the dispersion around ${\bf Q}=0$. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnon-like mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35meV and extending up to 100meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300K -- well above the ordering temperature of 38K -- and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We have used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal optical magnons in a honeycomb lattice iridate $\alpha$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. The spectrum in the energy region 20-25 meV exhibits momentum dependence, of which energy is highest at the location of the magnetic Bragg peak, ($\textit{h}, \textit{k}$) = ($\pm$0.32, 0), and lowered toward (0, 0) and ($\pm$1, 0). We compare our data with a linear spin-wave theory based on a generic nearest-neighbor spin model. We find that a dominant bond-directional Kitaev interaction of order 20 meV is required to explain the energy scale observed in our study. The observed excitations are understood as stemming from optical magnon modes whose intensity is modulated by a structure factor, resulting in the apparent momentum dependence. We also observed diffuse magnetic scattering arising from the short-range magnetic correlation well above $\textit{T}_{N}$. In contrast to Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, this diffuse scattering lacks the $C_3$ rotational symmetry of the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that the bond anisotropy is far from negligible in $\alpha$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$.

By means of density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, we investigate the high-pressure phases of the spin-orbit-coupled $J_{\rm{eff}}=3/2$ insulator GaTa$_4$Se$_8$. Its metallic phase, derived from the Mott state by applying pressure, is found to carry $J_{\rm{eff}}=3/2$ moments. The characteristic excitation peak in the RIXS spectrum maintains its destructive quantum interference of $J_{\rm{eff}}$ at the Ta $L_2$-edge up to 10.4 GPa. Our exact diagonalization based DFT+DMFT calculations including spin-orbit coupling also reveal that the $J_{\rm{eff}}=3/2$ character can be clearly identified under high pressure. These results establish the intriguing nature of the correlated metallic magnetic phase, which represents the first confirmed example of $J_{\rm{eff}}$=3/2 moments residing in a metal. They also indicate that the pressure-induced superconductivity is likely unconventional and influenced by these $J_{\rm{eff}}=3/2$ moments. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L3 edge to study the effect of hole doping upon the Jeff=1/2 Mott-insulating state in Sr2IrO4, via Rh replacement of the Ir site. The spin-wave gap, associated with XY-type spin-exchange anisotropy, collapses with increasing Rh content, prior to the suppression of the Mott-insulating state and in contrast to electron doping via La substitution of the Sr site. At the same time, despite heavy damping, the d-d excitation spectra retain their overall amplitude and dispersion character. A careful study of the spin-wave spectrum reveals that deviations from the J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg used to model the pristine system disappear at intermediate doping levels. We present a study of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra collected at the rare-earth $L$ edges of divalent hexaborides YbB$_6$ and EuB$_6$. In both systems, RIXS-active features are observed at two distinct resonances separated by $\sim10$ eV in incident energy, with angle-dependence suggestive of distinct photon scattering processes. RIXS spectra collected at the divalent absorption peak strongly resemble the unoccupied 5$d$ density of states calculated using density functional theory, an occurrence we ascribe to transitions between weakly-dispersing 4$f$ and strongly dispersing 5$d$ states. In addition, anomalous resonant scattering is observed at higher incident energy, where no corresponding absorption feature is present. Our results suggest the far-reaching utility of $L$-edge RIXS in determining the itinerant-state properties of $f$-electron materials.
