4. Modeling of torsion stress giant magnetoimpedance in amorphous wires with negative magnetostriction

Abstract

A model describing the influence of torsion stress on the giant magnetoimpedance in amorphous wires with negative magnetostriction is proposed. The wire impedance is found by means of the solution of Maxwell equations together with the Landau-Lifshitz equation, assuming a simplified spatial distribution of the magnetoelastic anisotropy induced by the torsion stress. The impedance is analyzed as a function of the external magnetic field, torsion stress and frequency. It is shown that the magnetoimpedance ratio torsion dependence has an asymmetric shape, with a sharp peak at some value of the torsion stress. The calculated field and stress dependences of the impedance are in qualitative agreement with results of the experimental study of the torsion stress giant magnetoimpedance in Co-based amorphous wires., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A model describing the exchange-biased asymmetric giant magneto-impedance in Joule-heated amorphous wires is proposed. It is assumed that the Joule heating results in the formation of a surface hard magnetic crystalline layer, and the asymmetric giant magneto-impedance is related to the exchange coupling between the amorphous and crystalline phases. The coupling between the surface layer and the amorphous bulk is described in terms of an effective bias field. The model is based on a simultaneous solution of linearizied Maxwell equations and the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The calculated field and frequency dependences of the wire impedance are in a qualitative agreement with results of the experimental study of the asymmetric giant magneto-impedance in Joule-heated Co-based amorphous wires., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

6. Generation of second harmonic in off-diagonal magneto-impedance in Co-based amorphous ribbons

Abstract

The off-diagonal magneto-impedance in Co-based amorphous ribbons was measured using a pick-up coil wound around the sample. The ribbons were annealed in air or in vacuum in the presence of a weak magnetic field. The evolution of the first and second harmonics in the pick-up coil voltage as a function of the current amplitude was studied. At low current amplitudes, the first harmonic dominates in the frequency spectrum of the voltage, and at sufficiently high current amplitudes, the amplitude of the second harmonic becomes higher than that of the first harmonic. For air-annealed ribbons, the asymmetric two-peak behaviour of the field dependences of the harmonic amplitudes was observed, which is related to the coupling between the amorphous phase and surface crystalline layers appearing after annealing. For vacuum-annealed samples, the first harmonic has a maximum at zero external field, and the field dependence of the second harmonic exhibits symmetric two-peak behaviour. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of a quasi-static rotational model. It is shown that the appearance of the second harmonic in the pick-up coil voltage is related to the anti-symmetrical distribution of the transverse field induced by the current. Abstract

A method for calculation of the magnetoimpedance in composite wires having an insulator layer between non-magnetic core and soft magnetic shell is described. It is assumed that the magnetic shell has a helical anisotropy and the driving current flows through the core only. The distribution of eddy currents and expressions for the impedance are found by means of a solution of Maxwell equations taking into account the magnetization dynamics within the shell governed by the Landau-Lifshitz equation. Abstract

The off-diagonal magnetoimpedance in field-annealed CoFeSiB amorphous ribbons was measured in the low-frequency range using a pick-up coil wound around the sample. The asymmetric two-peak behavior of the field dependence of the off-diagonal impedance was observed. The asymmetry is attributed to the formation of a hard magnetic crystalline phase at the ribbon surface. The experimental results are interpreted in terms of the surface impedance tensor. It is assumed that the ribbon consists of an inner amorphous region and surface crystalline layers. The coupling between the crystalline and amorphous phases is described through an effective bias field. A qualitative agreement between the calculated dependences and experimental data is demonstrated. The results obtained may be useful for development of weak magnetic-field sensors., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A phenomenological model for the asymmetric giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) in field-annealed amorphous ribbons is developed. The effect of a surface crystalline layer on the GMI response is described in terms of an effective bias field appearing due to a coupling between the crystalline layer and amorphous phase. It is shown that the presence of the bias field changes drastically the GMI profile. At low frequencies, the domain-walls motion leads to a steplike change in the GMI response. At high frequencies, the domain-walls motion is damped, and the GMI profile exhibits asymmetric two-peak behavior. The calculated dependences are shown to be in a qualitative agreement with results of experimental studies of the asymmetric GMI in field-annealed Co-based amorphous ribbons., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The giant magnetoimpedance effect in composite wires consising of a non-magnetic inner core and soft magnetic shell is studied theoretically. It is assumed that the magnetic shell has a helical anisotropy. The current and field distributions in the composite wire are found by means of a simultaneous solution of Maxwell equations and the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The expressions for the diagonal and off-diagonal impedance are obtained for low and high frequencies. The dependences of the impedance on the anisotropy axis angle and the shell thickness are analyzed. Maximum field sensitivity is shown to correspond to the case of the circular anisotropy in the magnetic shell. It is demonstrated that the optimum shell thickness to obtain maximum impedance ratio is equal to the effective skin depth in the mahnetic material., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We have performed high resolution photoemission study of substitutionally disordered alloys Cu-Pt, Cu-Pd, Cu-Ni, and Pd-Pt. The ratios between alloy spectra and pure metal spectra are found to have dips at the Fermi level when the residual resistivity is high and when rather strong repulsive electron-electron interaction is expected. This is in accordance with Altshuler and Aronov's model which predicts depletion of density of states at the Fermi level when both disorder and electron correlation are present., Comment: 1 tex file and 4 ps files

Abstract

This paper offers a review of the development and use of multi-agent modelling techniques and simulations in the context of manufacturing systems and supply chain management (SCM). The objective of the paper is twofold. First, it presents a comprehensive literature review of current multi-agent systems (MAS) research applications in the field of manufacturing systems and SCM. Second, it aims to identify and evaluate some key issues involved in using MAS methods to model and simulate manufacturing systems. A variety of different MAS applications are reviewed in three different classified research areas: production design and development, production planning and control, and SCM. In presenting a detailed taxonomy of MAS applications, the paper describes MAS application domains from five different perspectives. The review suggests the MAS approach represents a feasible framework for designing and analysing real-time manufacturing operations, since the approach is capable of modelling different levels of agent behaviour and dynamical interactions. The paper also highlights a number of key issues which have to be taken into account in attempting to design MAS-based research paradigms for future applications in manufacturing systems. Abstract

Ferromagnetic layer thickness dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistivities in Ta/NiFe(t)/IrMn (10 nm)/Ta has been investigated for t=3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 nm by the method of anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect. Our results revealed that the parallel and perpendicular resistivity components performed a varying function with increment in NiFe thickness. Both the resistivities at first were observed to increase when the NiFe thickness increases from 3 to 10 nm; then for the NiFe thicknesses from 10 to 20 nm, the resistivities of NiFe layer decrease as the NiFe thickness increases. However, the anisotropic resistivity change, which is the difference between parallel and perpendicular resistivities, was observed to increase for the whole range of thicknesses when the NiFe thickness increases. The measured quantities were found to be in good agreement with the theoretically estimated parameters using single domain model; thus these behaviors are well explained based on the modern electron theory transition metals. Abstract

NiFe/FeMn/NiFe trilayer structure forms an integral part of many conventional and tunneling magnetoresistance spin valve structures with FeMn antiferromagnetic layer. A systematic investigation of the exchange bias variations of the seed and top pinned NiFe layers in the NiFe/FeMn/NiFe trilayer structure is reported as a function of thickness of all the three constituting layers, in multilayers prepared by rf magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction patterns show the (111) texture for the NiFe and FeMn layers, necessary for the development of antiferromagnetic γ-fcc phase. In thickness variation studies of all the three magnetic layers, seed NiFe layer shows greater bias (150 Oe) than the top pinned NiFe layer (80 Oe only). The exchange bias shows the expected 1/t behavior for increasing NiFe layer thickness after initial maxima at low thickness. In the FeMn antiferromagnet layer thickness variation on the other hand, the large bias values attained around 5 nm thickness is nearly retained up to a thickness of 25 nm and the bias for the top NiFe layer is again substantially lower. The greater bias observed for the seed NiFe layer in all the three thickness variation studies is attributed to its growth over a saturated (111) oriented NiFe seed layer, which induces formation of interfacial FeMn layers with a net parallel spin ordering, in presence of the constant applied field. On the other hand, at the top FeMn/NiFe surface, the rigid FeMn surface with compensated bulk spin ordering formed already, is not easily biased and reoriented along the top NiFe layer, to develop as much parallel net spins in the antiferromagnetic material, and hence lower bias. Abstract

A surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPRS) measurement was carried out to determine dielectric properties, oxidation states, and optimum thickness of AlO[sub x] insulating barrier in magnetic tunnel junctions. The insulating barriers were prepared as a function of oxidation time by using a remote rf plasma oxidation process. The experimental results revealed that the dielectric value and optimum thickness of the A1O[sub x] insulating barrier in our junctions were found to be 1.79+ i 1.77 and 11.26 Å, respectively. For comparison, the magnetic tunneling junction was also fabricated using the same oxidation condition. The best magneto-resistance ratio of about 34% was observed at an optimum oxidation time of 70 s, as expected by the SPRS measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The microstructures and electrical conductivity (σ) at room temperature of Fe/Cu multilayered material, which was prepared by the electron-beam physical-vapor-deposition technique, were investigated to understand the dependence of σ on the bilayer thickness (Λ=d[sub Fe]+d[sub Cu]) and the sublayer thickness ratio (χ=d[sub Fe]/Λ), where d is the sublayer thickness. Satellite peaks in the x-ray diffraction spectra were observed, indicating a layered structure in the multilayered material. The specimen was polycrystalline, and the in-plane grain size is independent of the sublayer thickness. σ at a fixed χ increases with increasing Λ, and keeps nearly constant when Λ is larger than 30 nm. σ at a fixed Λ decreases linearly with increasing χ. The size dependence of σ is explained using a model that takes into account scattering by the sublayer interfaces and the grain boundaries. The scattering at interfaces and grain boundaries is thought to be the dominant mechanism for the size dependence of σ on Λ when d[sub Fe] is smaller and larger, respectively, than the estimated electron mean free path in the Cu sublayer. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

The main contribution of this paper is the development of a multi-objective FMS scheduler which is designed to maximally satisfy the desired values of multiple objectives set by the operator. For each production interval, a decision rule for each decision variable is chosen by the FMS scheduler. A competitive neural network is applied to present fast but good decision rules to the operator. A unique feature of the FMS scheduler is that the competitive neural network generates the next decision rules based on the current decision rules, system status and performance measures. A commercial FMS is simulated to prove the effectiveness of the FMS scheduler. The result shows that the FMS scheduler can successfully satisfy multiple objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent years, deadlock issue has received considerable attention in the real-time control realm of automated manufacturing system (AMS). In this paper, we propose a simple and easily adaptable deadlock avoidance algorithm using a graph theoretic approach. Unlike Petri-net based methods which are complex and static from the viewpoint that once they are constructed and implemented, it is not easy to modify them as the system configuration is changed, and operate them coupled with other shop-floor control modules such as a dispatching controller, our algorithm can be used cooperatively with a dispatching controller and expanded with little modification. The core of the algorithm consists of two modules: resource allocation policy and a cycle detection method. In particular, the resource allocation policy is of importance in our algorithm because even though the cycle detection method is employed, deadlock may occur under wrong resource allocation policies. Throughout this paper, we propose a quasi two-step resource allocation policy with which our deadlock avoidance algorithm can detect and avoid deadlock just one step before deadlock. Single stroke hot deformation process was introduced for the first time in this study. A high performance anisotropic NdFeB magnet was fabricated by this new method from MQPA ribbon powder. Principal factors that influenced hard magnetic properties, temperature and deformation percentage, were investigated. Under optimum conditions, NdFeB with (BH)max of 28 MGOe was obtained. A series of CoZr(200 [Angstrom])/Ag([t.sub.Ag])/CoZr(200 [Angstrom]) trilayers with Ag interlayer thickness tag in the range of 10-160 [Angstrom] was deposited on Si(100)-wafers at room temperature by using a magnetron sputtering system. In order to understand the dependence of the magnetic exchange interaction between ferromagnetic [Co.sub.84][Zr.sub.16](at.%) layers separated by nonmagnetic Ag layer on the [t.sub.Ag], we investigated the FMR spectra. The coupling strength increases with increasing tag up to 20 A with a maximum value of 2.0 kOe, but decreases rapidly with increasing tag in the range of 40-100 A. Finally, the value approaches zero above 120 A. The coupling strength is positive for all samples. Index Terms--CoZr/Ag/CoZr trilayers, exchange coupling, FMR, interlayer thickness.
