The in vitro reaction between Vitamin Methyl B12 and CdCl2 was studied at pH 9.6. Volatile cadmium compounds such as Cd(CH3)2 were sought using a G.C.‐A.A. system designed for such studies. Isoaspartic acid (isoAsp) is a common protein modification that spontaneously arises from asparagine or aspartic acid and has been linked to various diseases and health conditions. However, current methods for identifying isoAsp sites in proteins often suffer from ambiguity and have not gained widespread adoption. We developed a novel method that exclusively labels isoAsp with deuterium. This method capitalizes on the unique structural characteristics of isoAsp residues, which possess a free α-carboxyl group and can form an oxazolone ring. Once the oxazolone ring forms, it facilitates racemization at the C α -position, incorporating a deuteron from a D 2 O solvent. The sites of deuterium-incorporated isoAsp in proteins can be unequivocally determined by comparing the precursor and product ion masses of the peptides from proteins reacted in H 2 O and D 2 O. The effectiveness of this method has been demonstrated through its application to model proteins lysozyme and rituximab. Furthermore, we have confirmed that the isoAsp deuterium-labeling reaction efficiently labels both l- and d-isoAsp without distinction, as well as isoglutamic acid (isoGlu), for which no effective detection methods currently exist.

Background: Polypharmacy is common in people with dementia. The use of psychotropic drugs (PDs) and other, potentially inappropriate medications is high. The aims of this cross-sectional study were 1) to investigate the use of drugs in people with advanced dementia (PWAD), living at home or in long term care (LTC); 2) to focus on PD use; and 3) to identify determinants of PD use., Methods: The study was performed in the context of EPYLOGE (IssuEs in Palliative care for people in advanced and terminal stages of YOD and LOD in Germany). 191 PWAD were included. All drugs that were administered at the date of the examination were recorded. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified determinants of PD use., Results: 96% of PWAD received medication with a median number of four drugs. 49.7% received five or more drugs. According to the Beers Criteria 39% of PWAD ≥ 65 years received at least one potentially inappropriate medication. 79% of PWAD were treated with PDs. Older PWAD and PWAD living in LTC facilities received significantly more drugs than younger PWAD, and PWAD living at home, respectively. Dementia etiology was significantly associated with the use of antipsychotics, antidepressants and sedative substances. Place of living was associated with the use of pain medication. Behavioral disturbances were associated with the use of antipsychotics and sedative substances., Conclusions: To mitigate the dangers of polypharmacy and medication related harm, critical examination is required, whether a drug is indicated or not. Objectives: Multimorbidity of geriatric patients often leads to polypharmacy that increases the risk for drug interactions. Geriatric patients are also more sensitive to adverse drug reactions due to physiological changes resulting from ageing. Hence, the use of medicines should be considered thoroughly. This systematic literature review aimed at identifying and presenting available evidence on the effect of pharmaceutical interventions on geriatric patients, their medications or healthcare costs in a clinical setting in Europe., Methods: We included all studies on research of pharmaceutical interventions on geriatric inpatients (≥65 years) in Europe since 2001. Database searches were conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library and AgeInfo. In addition, the following journals were searched manually: European Journal of Hospital Pharmacy , ' Krankenhauspharmazie ', ' Medizinische Monatsschrift für Pharmazeuten ' and ' Zeitschrift für Gerontologie und Geriatrie '., Results: Database screening yielded 8058 hits. After deletion of duplicates, screening of title and abstract, 143 full-text articles were analysed and 17 papers were included. Manual searching added four more papers. Included studies were conducted in Belgium, Denmark, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden and Spain. They demonstrate that pharmaceutical care on wards leads to more appropriate medication use and might reduce outcomes like drug-related readmissions. Intensified pharmaceutical care showed additional effects, even in countries with established pharmaceutical care in hospitals., Conclusions: This systematic literature review demonstrates that ward-based pharmacists may improve the appropriateness of medications, seamless care and drug safety for geriatric inpatients while being cost effective., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared.

We report six cases of intentionally inflicted cardiac laceration. The victims ranged in age from 9 weeks to 2 1/2 years. Five victims were girls and in five cases the right atrium was lacerated. The left ventricle was lacerated in the other case. In the three cases with a confession, one victim each was struck with a fist, stomped, and kicked. Four patients had rib fractures, with at least two fractures in each case. Cardiac rupture from blunt trauma most commonly results from compression of the heart between the sternum and vertebral column, but may also occur from compression of the abdomen or legs, deceleration, blast injury, puncture of the heart by a fractured rib, and rupture through a resolving contusion. Accidentally acquired cardiac lacerations usually result from motor vehicle accidents or similarly severe forces. In children there are neither well documented cases of cardiac laceration nor of rib fractures from cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cardiac lacerations, as with other types of severe trauma acquired at home, are almost never accidental.

In March 1991, four cyanide poisonings were identified in Washington State. Three of these, one nonfatal and two fatal, were directly linked to the consumption of capsules of Sudafed-12 hour cold relief capsules. This article presents the details of these cases including the chronology, causes of death, autopsy and toxicological findings. The fourth case, also fatal, occurred after extensive publicity surrounding the poisonings, and was determined to be a copy-cat case intended to mimic the consumption of tainted Sudafed. The investigation and distinguishing features of this case are also discussed. A further cyanide poisoning occurred in Canada shortly after these incidents and had similar features to the copy-cat case.

A number of commercially available optical coatings, both antireflective and high reflective, have been tested for their laser-induced damage threshold, involving a total of eight different laboratories. The results obtained and the experimental methods used at these laboratories were discussed among the participants in this round robin at a minisymposium held at Balzers, Liechtenstein, 9-10 Dec. 1982. A final report of the round robin and a summary of the conclusions drawn at that symposium are presented.
