There is no consensus on the necessity of endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) to prevent post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis (PEP) after endoscopic stenting in patients with malignant biliary obstruction. We investigated the incidence of PEP after endoscopic biliary stenting for malignant biliary obstruction with or without ES in a multicenter prospective cohort study.We enrolled 807 patients who underwent endoscopic biliary stenting for malignant biliary obstruction with a native papilla at 36 hospitals between April 2017 and March 2018. The incidence of PEP in patients with or without ES was compared for subgroups based on stent type, placement method, and patient background. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to investigate the incidence of PEP in all stenting patients.Plastic and metal stents (MS) were inserted in 598 and 209 patients, respectively. The incidence of PEP in patients with or without ES was 7.9% and 7.4%, respectively among all stenting patients. The incidences of PEP with or without ES in plastic stent insertion patients, patients with MS insertion, stent insertions across the papilla, stent insertions across the papilla in patients without main pancreatic duct obstruction, and fully covered MS insertions across the papilla were compared. There was no overall significant difference in the incidence of PEP between those with or without ES. Multivariate logistic regression analysis for the incidence of PEP in all stenting patients revealed obstruction of the main pancreatic duct at the pancreatic head and epinephrine spraying on the papilla were significant factors; there was no significant difference in the incidence of PEP between patients with or without ES.Endoscopic sphincterotomy may not contribute to the prevention of PEP after endoscopic biliary stenting for malignant biliary obstruction, even in cases of insertion with a fully covered MS across the papilla.

Examination of unsorted microgastropod samples collected during the joint Russia-German research “Sea of Japan Biodiversity Studies (SoJaBio) Expedition” in 2010 and preserved in the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladivostok, resulted in the finding of six species of the family Rissoidae. Among them, “ Alvania ” nihonkaiensis Hasegawa, 2014 is newly recorded both in Russian waters and on the northern slope of the Sea of Japan, and Punctulum reticulatum Golikov, 1986 was rediscovered for the first time since its original description. Geographical and vertical distributions of each species and their significance are updated and discussed.

This letter proposes a testing method to emulate realistic stress conditions of DC and AC capacitors, with minimum required power supply and robust operation at the presence of capacitor degradation. It is especially suitable for parameter characterization and accelerated degradation testing of high-voltage and high-ripple current power electronic capacitors. The circuit architecture of the proposed testing method and the constraints of the testing samples under given designs are discussed. Proof-of-concept experiments on both DC and AC capacitors verify the feasibility.

Background Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) generally indicates poor prognoses in patients with serious intestinal damage. Although surgical removal of the damaged portion is effective, some patients can recover with conservative treatments. Aim To establish an optimal treatment strategy for HPVG, we attempted to generate computed tomography (CT)-based criteria for determining surgical indication, and explored reliable prognostic factors in non-surgical cases. Methods Thirty-four cases of HPVG (patients aged 34-99 years) were included. Necessity for surgery had been determined mainly by CT findings (i.e. free-air, embolism, lack of contrast enhancement of the intestinal wall, and intestinal pneumatosis). The clinical data, including treatment outcomes, were analyzed separately for the surgical cases and non-surgical cases. Results Laparotomy was performed in eight cases (surgical cases). Seven patients (87.5%) survived but one (12.5%) died. In each case, severe intestinal damage was confirmed during surgery, and the necrotic portion, if present, was removed. Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia was the most common cause (n = 4). Twenty-six cases were treated conservatively (non-surgical cases). Surgical treatments had been required for twelve but were abandoned because of the patients' poor general conditions. Surprisingly, however, three (25%) of the twelve inoperable patients survived. The remaining 14 of the 26 cases were diagnosed originally as being sufficiently cured by conservative treatments, and only one patient (7%) died. Comparative analyses of the fatal (n = 10) and recovery (n = 16) cases revealed that ascites, peritoneal irritation signs, and shock were significantly more frequent in the fatal cases. The mortality was 90% if two or all of these three clinical findings were detected. Conclusion HPVG related to intestinal necrosis requires surgery, and our CT-based criteria are probably useful to determine the surgical indication. In non-surgical cases, ascites, peritoneal irritation signs and shock were closely associated with poor prognoses, and are applicable as predictors of patients' prognoses.

This paper presents a condition-monitoring method of dc-link capacitors used in a high-power three-phase PWM inverter with an evaluation circuit intended for ageing tests. Although its power rating is 1/25 of the inverter, the evaluation circuit provides the equivalent ripple current waveform and dc-bias voltage to the high-power inverter. The monitoring method independently extracts the capacitance and ESR of the dc-link capacitor, where the fast Fourier transform is introduced to the ripple current waveform and the dc-link voltage of the evaluation circuit. Experimental results verify that the monitoring method obtains both the ESR and capacitance changes of a capacitor under test.

Health monitoring of the power conversion system is very important. Therefore, we developed a new method for measuring IGBT currents and reproducing average load current to monitor IGBTs. This method was successfully tested on an experimental setup which showed that the tiny PCB sensors can be integrated into intelligent power modules. We proposed an inexpensive analogue circuit which is suitable for capturing current information from a tiny PCB Rogowski coil. The sensors and corresponding circuit can be embedded into an Intelligent Power Module. The method was named “Envelop tracking” as it simultaneously measures the currents of the high and low side switches of a power converter and reproduces the upper and lower edges of the load current which can be averaged by further digital processing.

Condition monitoring plays an important role in estimating health condition of capacitors because the ageing of the capacitors is usually accompanied by an increase in equivalent series resistance (ESR) and a decrease in capacitance. Either capacitance or ESR cannot be a unique indicator of the lifetime of capacitors in some cases. This paper presents a condition monitoring method of a dc-link capacitor used in a three-phase PWM inverter with a front-end diode rectifier intended for motor drives. The monitoring method extracts both the ESR and capacitance of a capacitor under test from the actual ripple current and voltage without disconnecting the capacitor nor injecting an additional current. The monitoring method, therefore, can be implemented online. Experimental results verify that the monitoring method independently obtains the ESR and capacitance changes of the capacitor under test. This contributes to accurate lifetime estimation of dc-link capacitors.

The joint Russian–German expedition SokhoBio in 2015, on the research vessel Akademik M.A. Lavrentyev, provided the first opportunity to investigate the richness and composition of the abyssal gastropod fauna in the Kuril Basin of the Sea of Okhotsk, from which only a single species has been recorded in the literature. During the expedition, sampling of benthic animals was conducted at eight stations in the Sea of Okhotsk and at three stations in the Pacific (landward slope of the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench) using an Agassiz trawl, an epibentic sledge, and a giant box corer. A total of 417 specimens of ‘prosobranch’ gastropods were taken alive and were classified into 15 families and 70 species of Vetigastropoda and Caenogastropoda. Both abundance and richness were lower than expected in the Kuril Basin compared to the Pacific: 97 specimens belonging to 27 species (11 families) were collected at seven stations in the Kuril Basin, while 286 specimens in 43 species were found from two abyssal stations on the Pacific side of the Kuril Islands. Only six species occurred at abyssal depths on both sides. Familial composition also differed: large-sized buccinids were common only on the Pacific side. The very low levels of dissolved oxygen might explain the low abundance and richness, as well as the scarcity of large species, of Gastropoda in the Kuril Basin.

Inverters used in motor-drive and grid-connected applications usually employ current sensors at the output terminal because they have to control the output current. Existing current sensors like the Hall sensor and the current transformer are a constraint to reduce the volume and cost of the inverter. This paper proposes an output-current measurement method of a PWM inverter using a tiny PCB sensor that is based on the so-called Rogowski coil and can be integrated into an IGBT module. The method utilizes the switching current of the lowside switch for reproducing the output current, which allows using the PCB sensor because the switching current consists of high-frequency components. The method uses a single PCB sensor per leg and takes the polarity of the output current into account. Attention has been paid to reliability-related issues for dc-link capacitors such as monitoring methods, power-loss estimation, and ageing tests. The degradation of the capacitors depends on their operating condition including temperature, ripple current, and dc-bias voltage, which has a strong influence on failures as well. In design stages of power converters, it is desirable to know the relation between the degradation and electrolytic parameters. This paper makes an intensive discussion on the voltage dependence of the degradation of a small aluminum electrolytic capacitor with an ageing test and a leakage-current measurement. The ageing test reveals that a higher dc-bias voltage brings a faster increase in ESR but results in a slower drop in capacitance in a range within the rated voltage. This result implies that either capacitance or ESR cannot be a unique indicator of the lifetime. Attention should be paid both to the ESR and to the capacitance when one monitors the capacitor condition. On the other hand, more than the rated voltage leads a rapid degradation of the capacitor, which can be confirmed by a leakage-current measurement instead of the ageing test.

The shoot-through fault in inverters results from a gate noise voltage of power semiconductor switches including IGBTs. Testing the gate voltage under the high-speed switching event is important to evaluate immunity to the fault as well as to analyze the mechanism of the fault. This paper presents a testing method of shoot-through immunity in a PWM inverter consisting of IGBTs because the conventional double-pulse test can miss the shoot-through fault in the inverter. Theoretical analysis reveals that the N-base charge has influence on the gate-emitter voltage in the IGBT, which disturbs evaluating the shoot-through immunity in the inverter. This implies that IGBTs have a different characteristic from MOSFETs when the double-pulse test is carried out. The testing method introduces an additional pulse into the off-state IGBT to release the N-base charge, the circuit operation of which is the same as the inverter. Experimental results confirmed that the method did not affected by the N-base voltage, so that it is applicable to testing the shoot-through immunity of IGBTs in an inverter.

Endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) is an established therapy for esophageal stenosis. To assess its usefulness in children, we reviewed 11 years of pediatric cases of EBD in our hospital. Over the last 11 years, EBD was performed on 14 pediatric patients (10 boys and four girls; 7 months-11 years) at our hospital. All EBD sessions were performed under general anesthesia and fluoroscopic monitoring. The sessions were repeated every week or alternate weeks until resolution of dysphagia or development of smooth endoscope passage. Stenosis was resolved in 14 of 14 patients (100%). None of the patients (0%) showed recurrence of stenosis. As for postoperative complications, mediastinitis occurred only in one patient (7.1%). The median number of session repeats for an individual patient was three (range 1-10). EBD is a safe and effective therapeutic modality for esophageal stenosis in children.

High reliability is required for power modules because they are increasingly demanded as key devices in an energy-saving society. However, commercially available current sensors like current transformers and Rogowski coils are still of large size. Therefore, it is impossible to measure the current in small parts. In addition, long wiring with large sensors reduces the performance of power modules. In previous studies, we proposed a current sensor of PCB Rogowski coil with a fishbone pattern. The sensor is sufficiently small and thin with high accuracy for power module application. The PCB current sensor can be used as a built-in current sensor in power modules from the viewpoint of size. However, the sensor requires further improvement to be attached to bonding wire from a usability perspective. We propose a new pattern for the clamp-type PCB sensor and fabricate the PCB sensor as a built-in sensor in a power module. With the new pattern, it is possible to move and widen the gap for clamping. The signal error is small even though the sensor is inclinedly attached to the bonding wire. The accuracy is confirmed by a comparison between the clamp-type PCB sensor in the module and a commercially available current sensor outside the module. The clamp-type PCB sensor can be applied for intelligent power modules as well as current measurement for power electronic converters.

The shoot-through phenomenon has not been fully discussed for high-power inverters with IGBTs. This is because a negative gate voltage is applied to IGBTs during off states. Recently, attention is paid to an improved gate driver with only a positive gate voltage in order to meet demands for simplification, integration, and reduction in power consumption as well as in cost of the gate driver. Moreover, the threshold voltage of the next-generation IGBT will decrease with microfabrication techniques of the gate structure. This will make the shoot-through phenomenon severer and degrade the inverter reliability with the next-generation IGBTs. The influence of the parasitic parameters in both the IGBT and circuit on the shoot-through mechanism has not been investigated so far. This paper clarifies the shoot-through mechanism and investigates the impact of the next generation IGBTs on the inverter reliability. The influence of the internal capacitance of IGBT including stray inductance on inverter reliability is experimentally confirmed.

This paper proposes a new output current measuring method using tiny printed-circuit-board (PCB) current sensors. The method will make it possible to install the PCB current sensors in an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module. The PCB sensor picks up a switching current flowing through an IGBT chip, and then a combination of a digital circuit based on field-programmable gate array and an integrator circuit reproduces the output current of an inverter from the switching current. A proof-of-concept experimental verification is carried out using a buck converter, which verifies that the proposed method detects a dc component of the output current as well as a ripple component although the PCB sensor is based on the so-called Rogowski coil.

The marine gastropod Japonacteon nipponensis is a representative species of endangered tidal flat environments in northeastern Asia. It is rated near-threatened in Japanese Red Data Books. A population of a closely similar species had also been recognized in the Russian part of the Sea of Japan at a single locality in Sukhodol Bay and was recently distinguished taxonomically as a subspecies distinct from the Japanese populations. Here we present for the first time molecular evidence that confirms that both populations represent J. nipponensis with little genetic distance. The Russian population of this near-threatened species will be included in a forthcoming edition of the Red Data Book of Russia. Tidal flats in Japan and elsewhere in Asia have been seriously impacted in recent years by intensive coastal development. Although the sole known locality of this species in Russia in Sukhodol Bay is still intact, there are plans to construct a large coal terminal on the bay. The presence not only of this particular species but also of others specifically associated with this particular kind of biotope make it desirable to protect the whole habitat of Sukhodol Bay and surrounding localities in the Russian part of the Sea of Japan.

Parasitic inductances in power semiconductor packages affect the device switching speeds. The self-inductance of the source terminal has been considered to be the main factor that limits the switching speed, but mutual inductances among the three terminals also influence the speed. This paper proposes a method to measure the source self-inductance and the mutual inductances in the package using time-domain reflectometry (TDR) and time-domain transmissometry (TDT) that reveals the limitation of the switching speed. This paper proposes a practical current sensor integration in the intelligent power modules (IPMs) using simple PCB Rogowski coil sensors. The PCB sensors produce signals that proportional to the high frequency switching current from high and low side IGBTs. Then with only general-purpose Op-Amps and photo-couplers based integrator and sample and hold (S/H) circuits reproduce output current of the inverter. Specifically, the “envelop tracking” method has successfully proved on an experimental inverter setup. An unfamiliar gastropod was collected from a deep-sea whale carcass at the base of the São Paulo Ridge in the Southwest Atlantic by the manned research submersible Shinkai 6500, and is here described as a new species of the abyssochrysoidean genus Rubyspira, R. brasiliensis sp. nov., following morphological and molecular phylogenetic examinations. There are only two other known species in the genus, which occur together in the Monterey Submarine Canyon off California. The present new species was shown by the molecular analysis to be closer to one of the Californian species than the other. It was found aggregated on and around a whale carcass at a depth of 4204 m, which represents the deepest record of whale- fall ecosystems ever discovered.

This study deals with four species of marine microgastropods of the family Rissoellidae. Rissoella elatior (Golikov, Gulbin & Sirenko, 1987), R. golikovi (Gulbin, 1979), R. japonica n. sp., and Rissoella sp. 1 were collected in different locations around the island of Hokkaido, Japan. Light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the general morphology of the shell and radula, and a region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene was amplified for 26 specimens. Rissoella elatior is morphologically characterized by a highly asymmetrical radula with a deep notch encircled by 10–13 minute secondary cusps on the left dorsal margin of the central tooth. Rissoella golikovi is characterized by a skeneiform shell and possession of three teeth per row on the radula. Rissoella japonica n. sp. shows five teeth per row on the radula; central tooth higher than wide; lateral and marginal teeth narrow with an outer lateral projection at the base; all teeth presenting numerous small cusps on the cutting edge. Rissoella sp. 1 is distinguished from R. japonica n. sp. in having i) very short oral lobes, ii) a mantle with a large, black patch and whitish blotches inside, and iii) different color patterns associated with the visceral mass. Although Rissoella sp. 1 probably represents an undescribed species, additional specimens are needed to complete its description. This study represents a first molecular approach to the family Rissoellidae. Studies of traditional morphological characters indicated four species, the addition of COI data raised the count to eight potential species, suggesting the occurrence of cryptic species among rissoellids.

Attention has been paid to the next-generation IGBT toward CMOS compatible wafer processes, which can be driven by a 5-V logic level due to its low threshold gate voltage. This low threshold voltage makes the so-called shoot-through fault severer. Even though the switching speed of the IGBT is intentionally reduced, the shoot-through fault can happen. This paper presents shoot-through protection for an inverter consisting of the next-generation IGBTs with gate impedance reduction. Theoretical analysis reveals the criterion of the gate impedance with taking parasitic parameters of the inverter into account.

This paper proposes a new evaluation circuit for dc-link capacitors used in a high-power three-phase inverter, which is intended for testing power loss, failure rate, ageing, and so on. The evaluation circuit produces a practical ripple current waveform and a dc bias voltage into a capacitor under test, in which the ripple current is equivalent to that generated by the three-phase inverter on the dc link. The evaluation circuit employs a full-scale current-rating and downscaled voltage-rating inverter for producing the ripple current, so that the power rating of the evaluation circuit is much smaller than that of a full-scale current-rating and full-scale voltage-rating inverter. Theoretical analysis and simulated results verify the effectiveness of new evaluation circuit.

This paper proposes a calorimetric power-loss measurement method suitable for a high-power film capacitor used in the dc link of a high-power three-phase PWM inverter. The measurement method is characterized by using a thermally-insulated container and an evaluation circuit for dc-link capacitors. Introduction of the thermally-insulated container achieves an accurate power loss measurement that is of the order of 1 W. The evaluation circuit provides the equivalent ripple current waveform and dc-bias voltage to those of the high-power three-phase PWM inverter although its power rating is 1/24 of the high-power inverter. This combination makes it possible to measure the power loss of the capacitor under actual voltage/current condition at low cost. The joint German–Russian expedition KuramBio II in 2016 provided a significant opportunity to reinvestigate the species composition and distribution of the abyssal and hadal gastropod fauna in the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench, which was sampled previously only by the Russian research vessel (R/V) Vityaz in the 1940–1960s. During the cruise of the German R/V Sonne, benthic animals were collected using an Agassiz trawl, an epibentic sledge, a multiple corer and a giant box corer. A total catch of 592 live specimens of non-heterobranch gastropods were classified into 86 species and 22 families of the subclasses Neomphaliones, Vetigastropoda, and Caenogastropoda. The abundance, richness and phylogenetic diversity were lower in the hadal zone than in the abyssal zone. Seven hadal stations (6,442–9,584 m) yielded a total of 101 specimens belonging to 22 species in 11 families, whereas catches from four abyssal stations on the landward and seaward slopes (5,102–6,221 m) included 491 specimens and 70 species in 21 families. The abundance, richness and diversity for the hadal zone are, however, particularly high in comparison with other oceanic trenches, due, presumably, to high primary production in the surface layer of the subarctic Northwest Pacific. The uniqueness of species composition increased with depth; sixteen out of the 22 species from the hadal stations (72.7%) were found exclusively in this depth zone. Two unnamed species of Neomphalidae and Sahlingia from 9,577 to 9,584 m represent the world’s deepest records for Neomphaliones and Vetigastropoda and suggest the as yet unidentified presence of the world-deepest cold-seep habitats in the Kuril–Kamchatka Trench.

The transcription factor MAFB is an important regulator of the development and differentiation of various organs and tissues. Previous studies have shown that MAFB is expressed in embryonic and adult mouse testes and is expected to act as the downstream target of retinoic acid (RA) to initiate spermatogenesis. However, its exact localization and function remain unclear. Here, we localized MAFB expression in embryonic and adult testes and analyzed its gene function using Mafb-deficient mice. We found that MAFB and c-MAF are the only large MAF transcription factors expressed in testes, while MAFA and NRL are not. MAFB was localized in Leydig and Sertoli cells at embryonic day (E) 18.5 but in Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, and pachytene spermatocytes in adults. Mafb-deficient testes at E18.5 showed fully formed seminiferous tubules with no abnormal structure or differences in testicular somatic cell numbers compared with those of control wild-type mice. Additionally, the expression levels of genes related to development and function of testicular cells were unchanged between genotypes. In adults, the expression of MAFB in Sertoli cells was shown to be stage specific and induced by RA. By generating Mafbfl/fl CAG-CreER™ (Mafb-cKO) mice, in which Cre recombinase was activated upon tamoxifen treatment, we found that the neonatal cKO mice died shortly upon Mafb deletion, but adult cKO mice were alive upon deletion. Adult cKO mice were fertile, and spermatogenesis maintenance was normal, as indicated by histological analysis, hormone levels, and germ cell stage-specific markers. Moreover, there were no differences in the proportion of seminiferous stages between cKO mice and controls. However, RNA-Seq analysis of cKO Sertoli cells revealed that the down-regulated genes were related to immune function and phagocytosis activity but not spermatogenesis. In conclusion, we found that MAFB is dispensable for fetal testis morphogenesis and spermatogenesis maintenance in adult mice, despite the significant gene expression in different cell types, but MAFB might be critical for phagocytosis activity of Sertoli cells.

This paper proposes a new short-circuit protection method for an IGBT. The proposed method is characterized by detecting not only gate charge but also gate voltage of the IGBT. This results in a shorter protection time, compared to the previous method that detects only the gate charge. A real-time monitoring system using an FPGA, A/D converters, and a D/A converter is used for the proposed protection method.
