Abstract

Formic acid is obtained in equimolar amount with levulinic acid during the hydrolysis of cellulose and thus can be used as a sustainable hydrogen source in the direct levulinic acid hydrogenation towards gamma-valerolactone (biofuel additive). Ag Pd catalysts prepared by various methods and containing different Ag:Pd ratio were investigated in this context. By combining activity tests, characterization of the main physicochemical properties of the catalysts and DFT study of formic acid decomposition, the key factors responsible for the activity of Ag Pd catalysts in both the formic acid decomposition and the subsequent hydrogenation of levulinic acid were specified. Pd is shown to be active, but prone to poisoning by CO, while the CO poisoning remains limited on diluted Ag Pd alloy with strong intermetallic interaction, where its adsorption is very weak thanks to the isolation of Pd atoms. Therefore, the catalyst containing 4%Ag-1%Pd/AlOOH showed the highest selectivity in formic acid decomposition as well as the highest activity in levulinic acid hydrogenation (34% conversion in 5 h at 190 °C). • Pd–Ag catalysts are active in the formic acid decomposition and levulinic acid hydrogenation tandem process. • Pd–Ag catalysts are reducing CO poisoning compared to the active Pd counterpart. • Preparation method and Ag:Pd ratio allow to tune the activity of the reaction. • Periodic DFT computations were used to rationalize the activity of Pd–Ag catalysts. 26. Nickel Dynamics Switches the Selectivity of CO2 Hydrogenation.

Abstract

The Reverse Water Gas‐Shift reaction (CO2+H2 ↽⇀ ${ \mathbin{{\stackrel{\textstyle\rightharpoonup} { {\smash{\leftharpoondown}} } }} }$ CO+H2O) allows to balance syn‐gas under industrial conditions. Nickel has been suggested as a potential catalyst but the temperature required is too high, more than 800 °C, limiting practical implementation but when lowering the temperature methanation occurs. Simulations via Density Functional Theory on well‐defined surfaces have systematically failed to reproduce these experimental results. But under reaction conditions, Ni surfaces are not static and DFT models coupled to microkinetics show that low temperatures (high CO coverages) drive the generation of Ni adatoms that are the active sites for methanation. At higher temperatures, the adatom population decreases, and the selectivity towards CO increases. Thus the mechanism behind the selectivity switch is driven by the dynamics induced by reaction intermediates. Our work contributes to the inclusion of dynamic aspects of materials under reaction conditions in the understanding of complex catalytic behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article describes the case of a 68-year old patient who was diagnosed with synchronous cervical and ovarian cancer using positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) using F-fluorodeoxyglucose as a radiopharmaceutical. The risk of malignancy index was used to evaluate the ovarian tumors. The patient underwent total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingoophorectormy and surgical staging and radiotherapy as adjuvant treatment.
