Abstract

A new technology to make the bipolar kicker magnet system, using a symmetric Blumlein Pulse Forming Network (SBPFN) system is introduced. In the 50 GeV, the fast extraction system is designed to deliver the 50 GeV beam to the downstream neutrino oscillation experiment beam line with the Super-Kamiokande detector.

The research group in Japan that pursues the possibility of inertial fusion employing giant cluster ions has been continuing to study the main beam driver, i.e., the two-way multiplex induction synchrotron, as well as the injector and the multiplex permanent-magnet stacking ring. Abstract

The normalized elimination of the small component (NESC) theory, recently proposed by Filatov and Cremer [J. Chem. Phys. 122, 064104 (2005)], is extended to include magnetic interactions and applied to the calculation of the nuclear magnetic shielding in HX (X=F,Cl,Br,I) systems. The NESC calculations are performed at the levels of the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) and the second-order regular approximation (SORA). The calculations show that the NESC-ZORA results are very close to the NESC-SORA results, except for the shielding of the I nucleus. Both the NESC-ZORA and NESC-SORA calculations yield very similar results to the previously reported values obtained using the relativistic infinite-order two-component coupled Hartree-Fock method. The difference between NESC-ZORA and NESC-SORA results is significant for the shieldings of iodine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Voltage shift phenomena of the hysteresis loop were characterized for a c-axis oriented heteroepitaxial BaTiO[sub 3] film by means of switching current measurements using various types of pulse sequences. During application of voltage, the hysteresis loop gradually shifted along the voltage axis according to the polarity of the voltage. Even after the application of voltage, while the top and bottom electrodes were short-circuited, the hysteresis loop continued to move. Under certain conditions, a part of the hysteresis loop shifted back, whereas the rest shifted forward. These results were explained, assuming that there is a nonswitching layer between the ferroelectric layer and the bottom electrode, and that the discontinuity of polarization can be compensated by injection of negative charges from the electrode. It was suggested that the nonswitching layer is possibly formed by relaxation of lattice misfit strain in the heteroepitaxial ferroelectric thin film. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

It has been reported that the improvement of activities of daily living (ADL) by rehabilitation affects glycemic control. However, there are no reports about antidiabetes drugs as factors affecting the outcomes of rehabilitation. Therefore, we investigated the effects of antidiabetes drugs on functional independence measure (FIM) [total (T), motor (M), and cognition (C) items] in stroke patients with diabetes who were discharged from the subacute rehabilitation ward. We chose the frequently used antidiabetes drugs [sulfonylurea (SU), dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitors (DPP-IVIs), and α-glycosidase inhibitors (α-GIs)] as the basis for categorizing the patients. We compared the patients' background features and laboratory data among the three groups. As a result, when SU was used in stroke patients with diabetes, it is difficult to obtain significant FIM-M gain, FIM-C gain, FIM-M efficiency, and FIM-C efficiency compared with of-GIs. As a reason for this, we hypothesize the possibility of the involvement of insulin resistance. Therefore, we consider that insulin resistance should be determined early and that it is important to reduce insulin resistance comprehensively by involving experts.

26. Analysis of a Rotating Disk System with Axial Cooling Air

Abstract

AbstractIn this article, a series of simulations of a rotating disk system with air cooling is introduced. These simulations are performed with the realizable k-ε eddy-viscosity model. Computational results illustrate the effect of the cooling air and disk rotation on the temperature of the disk surface. The maximum rotating disk speed reaches about 78300 rpm and the range of Reynolds numbers based on rotation speed is from about 0.7 × 106to 3 × 106. The present work shows that the flow structure in the gap, which is on the opposite side of the cooling air, is rather similar to different cooling air flows. The temperature goes up as the rotating speed increases. The temperature in this gap will first decrease when the cooling air increases under lower mass flow rate. But when the cooling air continues to increase, the temperature will rise up indicating the existence of an optimum value of the cooling flow rate.
