Malaria is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide with high incidence and mortality. Among the five species that can infect humans, Plasmodium ovale morphologically resembles Plasmodium vivax, resulting in misidentification and confusion in diagnosis, and is responsible for malarial disease relapse due to the formation of hypnozoites. P. ovale receives relatively less attention compared to other major parasites, such as P. falciparum and P. vivax, primarily due to its lower pathogenicity, mortality rates, and prevalence rates. To efficiently produce lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), a major target for diagnosing malaria, this study used three Escherichia coli strains, BL21(DE3), BL21(DE3)pLysS, and Rosetta(DE3), commonly used for recombinant protein production. These strains were characterized to select the optimal strain for P. ovale LDH (PoLDH) production. Gene cloning for recombinant PoLDH production and transformation of the three strains for protein expression were performed. The optimal PoLDH overexpression and washing buffer conditions in nickel-based affinity chromatography were established to ensure high-purity PoLDH. The yields of PoLDH expressed by the three strains were as follows: BL21(DE3), 7.6 mg/L; BL21(DE3)pLysS, 7.4 mg/L; and Rosetta(DE3), 9.5 mg/L. Anterior approach cervical surgery is widely used for accessing C3 lesions. When operating with an anterior approach, the surgical field is obstructed by mandible. Neck extension is popular method to secure better surgical field but risk devastating neurological damage. To overcome this limited surgical field without neck extension, we adopted nasotracheal intubation and evaluated its efficiency. We retrospectively analyzed 16 patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy or corpectomy of C3 lesions via nasotracheal intubation. We enrolled an additional 29 patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy or corpectomy of C3 lesions via orotracheal intubation as a control group. All patients had been diagnosed with cervical spondylotic myelopathy or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. We measured the mandibular-cervical angle, which is the angle between the lower mandibular line and anterior vertebral line. The mandibular-cervical angle was increased by 7.3 with nasotracheal intubation compared to orotracheal intubation. Nasotracheal intubation is an effective surgical option for securing the surgical field without neck extension in anterior cervical surgery including C3 lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, we evaluate the scientific basis for managing hull fouling of ships entering Korean ports, diagnose biological risks that may occur when in-water cleaning (IWC) systems remove hull fouling, and present a protocol for evaluating these risks (the Korean Infection Modes and Effects Analysis; K-IMEA). Protocol development included the selection of core elements and scenario design for IWC and the evaluation of regrowth experiments. The K-IMEA index was designed by considering the inoculation pathway of attaching organisms in all processes to ships that enter a port for in-water cleaning. A number of risk indices were defined: R1—Introduction/Establishment of alien species before in-water cleaning; R2—Establishment of alien species escaped during in-water cleaning; R3—Introduction/Establishment of alien species after in-water cleaning; and R4—Establishment of alien species in effluent water. K-IMEA regrowth experiments (R2 and R4) using the in-water cleaning effluent showed that the attachment and regrowth of prokaryotes, microalgae, and macroalgae were successfully detected. In particular, prokaryotes were observed in samples filtered through a 5 μm mesh of the in-water cleaning effluent, even at a low fouling rating (Levels 1–2). These experiments suggest a necessity to consider a secondary treatment method in addition to the primary filtration method for the treatment of in-water cleaning effluents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The Subaxial Cervical Spine Injury Classification System (SLICS) is a commonly used algorithm for diagnosing and managing subaxial cervical spine trauma. A SLIC score 4 suggests either surgery or non-surgically treatment depending on the surgeon's experience and patient's conditions. OBJECTIVE: Prognosis and treatment results were analyzed in patients with SLIC score 4. METHODS: The patients with SLIC score 4 were retrospectively reviewed from 2012 to 2019. Forty-one patients were included and divided into two groups: non-surgically treated and surgically treated. Demographic data and radiographs were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the difference between the two clinical groups. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients were non-surgically treated, and nineteen patients were surgically treated. There was no neurological deterioration in both groups. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the last follow-up AISA and Nurick grade (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the number of patients who showed improvement when comparing the initial and the last follow-up neurological status (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Regardless of the treatment method, the spinal cord injury patients with SLICS point 4 showed a relatively good prognosis. Patients with SLIC score 4 could be treated non-surgically or surgically based on the surgeon's experience and factors associated with the patient's acute health status and chronic comorbidities. Bandgap engineering of compound semiconductors and the fabrication of bandgap-modulated heterostructures are important for enabling the development of modern optoelectronics. However, these engineering processes are challenging for two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors of transition metal dichalcogenides, particularly on a large scale. Herein, we report the wafer-scale homogeneous growth of composition-modulated WS2xSe2(1-x) alloys with a continuously tunable bandgap using metal–organic chemical vapor deposition. Well-optimized growth produces monolayer films with excellent homogeneity over the entire wafer. The substitutional atomic chalcogen (S, Se) concentration in WS2xSe2(1-x) alloys is precisely controlled by varying the flow rate of the metal–organic precursors, leading to a bandgap modulation from 1.67 to 2.05 eV, as determined from absorbance spectra. Notably, the optical bandgap of WS2xSe2(1-x) alloys exhibits a nearly linear relationship with the chalcogen composition, implying a low bowing effect. This bowing-alleviated bandgap modulation is attributed to the small lattice mismatch, strain relaxation, and thermodynamic miscibility in the WS2xSe2(1-x) alloys, as confirmed by density-functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the fabrication of hetero-multilayers by stacking differently alloyed films is demonstrated. The produced heterostructure film exhibits a broad spectral absorbance distinct from that of the individual layers. The findings of this study provide insights for the advancement of versatile design of functional 2D optoelectronics. The wafer-scale homogeneous growth of WS2xSe2(1-x) monolayer alloys with full-range composition and bandgap modulation is demonstrated using metal–organic chemical vapor deposition. In these 2D TMD alloys, the bowing effect is substantially alleviated, enabling systematic bandgap modulation with the linear relationship between optical bandgap and alloying composition.
