Reporting the results of experimental study of Bi-2223 thick films on a MgO substrate prepared by a coating method and CIP technique is discussed. It is found that the J(sub c) and T(sub c) of the prepared thick film depend on its thickness and the compositional deviation is caused by volatilization of Pb during sintering process.

Abstract

A study reports on the development of four, properly operating magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems with gantry-free horizontal dewar at Tokyo, Kanezawa and Osaka, Japan; and Boston, MA. The number of sensors in these instruments range from 96-160. The specification of the sensor complex enables configurations up to a 208-channel gradiometer system. System configuration, an illustration of the MEG response and the merits of gantry-free horizontal dewars in terms of user-friendliness are discussed.

Abstract

A study was conducted on high temperature superconducting (HTS) fault current limiters (FCLs) for electric power system applications. A magnetic shielding type FCL consisting of a superconducting cylinder, iron core, control coil and a copper primary winding was developed. The superconducting cylinder employs a Bi-2212 thick film on a MgO substrate while the control coil is made up of metallic rings.

Abstract

A theoretical model for the flux-to-frequency conversion of relaxation oscillation superconducting quantum interference devices (ROSs) is shown and is tested in real life situations for oscillation frequencies up to 7 GHz. Experiments are performed on more than ten different ROSs and the model agrees with all measured data. Also, a simple flux locked loop based on frequency readout of a ROS in the GHz regime is presented.

Abstract

Double relaxation oscillation superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are used in the fabrication of a highly sensitive first-order gradiometer. The gradiometer exhibits an ideal white flux noise and white magnetic field noise level. Its noise level is not influenced by the relaxation oscillations in adjacent channels, indicating that double relaxation oscillation SQUIDs can be used in the design of multichannel magnetometers.

A semi-portable direct current-superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system is developed for studying diseases of the human heart and brain. The system is equipped with a liquid helium continuous cryostat with a cool down time of 20 minutes. The pickup coil is made of Nb-Ti-Cu wire. The magnetometer has a very low white noise level and allows reliable magnetocardiogram measurements.

A multichannel biomagnetic measurement system has been developed for brain research. The system is equipped with direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and axial first-order gradiometers for improved flux resolution. The SQUIDs are hermetically sealed in a ceramic package to enhance system reliability. Flexible printed circuits are also provided to decrease the liquid helium evaporation rate.

Abstract

The experimental behavior of Double Relaxation Oscillation superconducting quantum interference devices (DROSs) at various relaxation frequencies is compared with the devices' sensitivity characteristics obtained via numerical simulations. Results suggest that the DROSs' sensitivity and voltage transfer coefficient are determined by thermal noise at relaxation frequencies below 2.0 GHz. These parameters are influenced by the plasma oscillations in the superconducting quantum interference device at higher frequencies.

Abstract

The microstructure of yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) thin films deposited on MgO(100) and SrTiO3(100) substrates with step-edges was studied. The films, which were patterned to form multiple slits using photolitographic techniques, were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Results show that YBCO films deposited on SrTiO3 have different lattice matching patterns than those perpared on MgO.

Abstract

The performance of a relaxation oscillating superconducting quantum interference device (ROS) fabricated using the Nb/AlOx/Nb Josephson tunnel junction technique was evaluated. The flux-to-frequency relationship of the ROS was measured and compared with the theoretical curve derived from the flux-to-maximum-current relationship. Results indicate that an ROS with tunnel junctions is more stable and operates at higher frequencies than those composed of nanobridges.
