Abstract

Monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) are now well established as a technology for tracking charged particles, especially when low material budget is desirable. For such applications, sensors focus on spatial resolution and pixels with digital output or modest charge measurement ability are well suited. Within the European Union STRONG-2020 project, which focuses on experiments using hadrons, the TIIMM (Tracking and Ions Identifications with Minimal Material budget) joint research activity intends to expand granular MAPS capacity to energy-loss ({\Delta}E) measurement for ion species identification. The TIIMM prototypes are developed in the Tower Jazz 180 nm CMOS image sensor (CIS) process. The Time-Over-Threshold (ToT) method is applied to the sensor for the energy-loss measurement. Abstract

- Paper withdrawn by the author - CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors for charged particle tracking are considered as technology for numerous experiments in heavy ion and particle physics. To match the requirements for those applications in terms of tolerance to non-ionizing radiation, it is being tried to deplete the sensitive volume of the, traditionally non-depleted, silicon sensors. We study the feasibility of this approach for the common case that the collection diodes of the pixel are small as compared to the pixel pitch. An analytic equation predicting the thickness of the depletion depth and the capacity of this point-like junction is introduced. We find that the predictions of this equations differs qualitatively from the usual results for flat PN junctions and that $dC/dU$-measurements are not suited to measure the depletion depth of diodes with point-like geometry. The predictions of the equation is compared with measurements on the depletion depth of CMOS sensors, which were carried out with a novel measurement protocol. It is found that the equation and the measurement results match with each other. By comparing our findings with TCAD simulations, we find that precise simulation models matches the empirical findings while simplified models overestimate the depletion depth dramatically. A potential explanation for this finding is introduced and the consequences for the design of CMOS sensors are discussed., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a critial error an the analytical calculations of the depletion depth. Abstract

Radioisotope imaging is a powerful tool to understand the biological mechanisms in-vivo, especially in the brain of small animals, providing a significant model to study the human brain. In this context, we have developed and built a pixelated intracerebral positron probe to be embedded on awake and freely moving small animals, typically rats. This pixelated probe will represent a key instrument for neuroscientists to study neural mechanisms and correlate them to behavioral experiments. We describe in this paper the simulations carried out to design the intracerebral sensor, its architecture, and the detection of positrons in a volume with a couple of sensors assembled back-to-back. We also depict the architecture of the wireless acquisition system. Finally, we present the first measurements performed in real-time by this miniaturized probe with sealed radioactive sources and a 18F solution.

Abstract

International audience; Preclinical behavior neuroimaging gathers simultaneous assessment of behavior and functional brain imaging. It is a potential key breakthrough to improve the understanding of brain processes and assess the validity of preclinical studies in drug development. Achieving such a combination is difficult, anesthesia or restraints inherent to conventional nuclear imaging preclude its use for behavior studies. In that context, we have proposed an original strategy using submillimetric probes to directly measures positrons inside the rat brain. This paper gives the results of Monte Carlo simulations of a new generation of intracerebral positron probe based on a CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor. We present the results obtained for a probe into a large homogeneous volume of radioactive water (18 F) leading to a sensitivity of 0.88 cps · Bq −1 · mm 3 and a mean energy deposition by positrons of 15.1 keV. Simulation in simplified brain-shaped sources modeling a 11 C-raclopride experiment shows that the implanted volume modeling the left putamen contribute to 92.4 % of the signal from positrons. We also investigate the effects of the thickness of the sensitive layer, the energy threshold and pixel dimensions on the detection capacities of the sensor. We demonstrate that an increase in the sensitive thickness from 18 to 190 µm would lead to an increase of positrons sensitivity by a factor of 1.74, but to a decrease of the direct (positrons) to indirect (γ-rays and electrons) sensitivity ratio by a factor of 1.59. Finally we show that for a threshold lower than about 5 keV the effect of the pixel dimensions is negligible.

Abstract

Despite proven efficacy of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in reducing the all-cause mortality in patients after myocardial revascularization, the penetration of CR, due to patient-related factors and referral rates remains limited. To improve the outcomes, home-based tele-rehabilitation (TR) has been proposed recently. In theory TR enhances the effects of standard CR procedures due to implementation of an intelligent monitoring system designed to ensure optimal training through on-demand transmission of vital signs, aimed at motivating the patients through daily schedule reminders, setting daily goals and creating a platform for mutual feedback. Several meta-analyses assessing various studies comparing these two methods (CR and TR) have proven that they are at least equally effective, with some of the research showing superiority of TR. Although there was a small sample size, lack of long-term follow-up, reporting effects of TR itself, no integration with tools designed for coaching, motivating and promoting a healthy lifestyle constitutes an important limitation. The latter carries a hopeful prognosis for improvement when utilizing a broad-spectrum approach, especially with use of dedicated technological solutions exploiting the fact of a large and yet rapidly increasing penetration of smartphones, mobile PCs and tablets in the population. The above-mentioned findings worked as the basis and rationale for commencing the RESTORE project aimed at developing and delivering state-of-the-art, comprehensive TR for patients after myocardial revascularization and evaluating its molecular aspect in view of how it influences the atherosclerosis progression attenuation. This paper presents the current state and rationale behind the project based on up-to-date TR efficacy data.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine whether, and to what the type of fertilisation employed can affect the quality of the harvested spring rape and the oil extracted therefrom through virgin oil pressing. The article presents the results of research conducted with the use of ATR-FTIR absorption spectroscopy of selected cold pressed vegetable oils. The study included three types of rapeseed oil from spring plants grown with traditional NPK mixture fertilisation and digestate. Abstract

The spectrometer ATHENA (Accurate Telescope for High-Energy Neutron metrology Applications) is being developed at the LNE-IRSN and aims at characterising energy and fluence of fast neutron fields. The detector is a recoil proton telescope and measures neutron fields in the range of 5–20 MeV. This telescope is intended to become a primary standard for both energy and fluence measurements. The neutron detection is achieved by a polyethylene radiator for n–p conversion, three 50-µm-thick silicon sensors that use CMOS technology for proton tracking and a 3-mm-thick silicon diode to measure the residual proton energy. The use of CMOS sensors and silicon diode, owing to a large detection solid angle, increases the intrinsic efficiency of the detector by a factor of 10 compared with conventional designs. The ability of the spectrometer to determine the neutron energy was demonstrated and reported elsewhere. This paper focuses on the fluence measurement of monoenergetic neutron fields in the range of 5–20 MeV. Experimental investigations, performed at the AMANDE facility, indicate a good estimation of neutron fluence at various energies. In addition, a complete description of uncertainties budget is presented in this paper and a Monte Carlo propagation of uncertainty sources leads to a fluence measurement with a precision ∼3–5 % depending on the neutron energy. Abstract

A first prototype of recoil proton telescope (RPT) is currently working at the AMANDE facility, being developed as a collaboration between IPHC Strasbourg and the LNE-IRSN. The device, able to measure both energy and fluence of neutron fields in the range of 5–20 MeV, has to be improved further, in order to reduce the considerable inelastic background generated by the neutrons inside the RPT itself. To achieve faster running cycles, the present complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor pixels used for proton tracking are to be replaced by a new integrated chip, specially developed for this application. The authors present a first version of this new element, with individual pixels readout at a 200-MHz frequency, with a fast 4-bit ADC for each column of 64 pixels. The measured performances point to a complete frame treatment in only 12.6 µs. With a readout speed multiplied by a factor 400 over the existing device, the authors expect a considerable improvement of the telescope at AMANDE, with the potential to reach neutron fluence rates up to 107 n cm−2 s−1 or more. Abstract

A study on the buffer layer dependence of the film texture, surface roughness, and magnetization reversal process in Co/Pt multilayers prepared by de magnetron sputtering is presented. Oxidized Si(100) water was covered with four different buffers: (A) 10 nm Cu, (B) 5 mn Ta/10 nm Cu, (C) 5 nm Ta/10 nm Cu/5 nm Ta, and (D) 5 nm Ta/10 nm Cu/5 nm Ta/10 nm Cu. The growth of [2 nm Pt/0.5 nm Co]x5/2 nm Pt on top of these buffer layers results in a large variation in the fee (111) Co/Pt texture and surface morphology. All films have the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy but magnetization reversal process, studied by the magnetooptic Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetic force spectroscopy (MFM), strongly depends on the buffer used. Observation of magnetic domains evolution under a MOKE microscope allows one to calculate from magnetization relaxation curves average dispersion of energy barriers of the thermal activated magnetization switching process. The application of MFM in external magnetic field allows one to follow the dynamics of direct and indirect magnetization switching procesess up to submicrometer scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
