The present essay explores the question of continuity and change between Kaneš and Ḫattuša in the cultic sphere, reviewing the cult of Parga, probably a fertility goddess of local Anatolian origin, in the Hittite sources. It reveals that Parga appears in several different cultic contexts but within a relatively invariable sequence of offerings, often appearing with the same, often “exotic” deities, such as Zūluma, Šišumma/i, and Šurra. The probable location for performance of many of these cultic sequences in the lower town of Ḫattuša, one of the most ancient parts of the city, shows a great deal of continuity between the Old Assyrian and the Old Hittite periods, and may further highlight the antiquity of these cults. Since some of the cultic action considered in this essay took place in close proximity to the ašuša-gate, the evidence concerning the location of that gate, probably at the western or northwestern section of the fortification wall and near some of the institutions located in its vicinity, will be examined. The article discusses what is referred to as the Revised Eponym List (REL), time keeping intercalation, the Old Assyrian calendar and debt notes from the Level II period of the extinct city Kültepe in modern day Turkey. The role that the Assyrian calendars played in debtors' repayment following transactions, including the ability to records of months passed, is discussed.

The article looks at the chronology of ancient Assyria, focusing on the period of the reign of Mesopotamian ruler Samsī-Adad I. It notes that both the eponyms assigned to particular years in Assyrian texts and the Assyrian King List (AKL) are used as means of establishing chronology, and examines an ostensible inconsistency between the two. The article presents an examination of cuneiform texts excavated from the extinct city of Kültepe (Kaniš, Turkey) that provided evidence of the city being raided and of it suffering from rebellions. It discusses how the Assyrians used the city as a trade center, explores relations between Anatolia and Assyria and discusses how power relations functioned between local Anatolian kingdoms. Topics discussed include the impact of raids on trade in the city, the activity of Assyrian merchants and the level of unrest among central Anatolian cities.

The article investigates the growth and history of silver as a form of currency in the Ancient Near East and Mesopotamia in approximately the third millennium BCE. A historical overview of primitive bartering systems and the invention of minted coins is presented. The author maintains that more than 20.000 cuneiform tablets which gave evidence to the rich economic-financial instruments which helped to maintain long-distance caravan enterprises between Assur and Kanish.

The article describes the individual and family in Old Assyrian society through excavations at archaeological sites in Asia Minor. The largest and most important of these settlements was at Kanesh. Excavations at the area revealed four different occupation levels in the lower city. The Assyrian commercial system was based on a system of long distance trade with an import into Anatolia.
