Abstract

The article presents an examination of cuneiform texts excavated from the extinct city of Kültepe (Kaniš, Turkey) that provided evidence of the city being raided and of it suffering from rebellions. It discusses how the Assyrians used the city as a trade center, explores relations between Anatolia and Assyria and discusses how power relations functioned between local Anatolian kingdoms. Topics discussed include the impact of raids on trade in the city, the activity of Assyrian merchants and the level of unrest among central Anatolian cities.
