1. Multifrequency interferometer and radio continuum monitoring observations of CTA 102

Abstract: This paper represents the work of several years of observation of CTA 102 with both single dish telescopes and interferometric arrays, covering wavelengths from 1.2 cm to 1.3 mm. The resolution of the maps covers an order of magnitude from 0.5 mas to 50 μas. The images presented demonstrate the rapid structural changes in this source. These rapid structural changes correlates with the outbursts seen in the total flux, turnover frequency and in the spectral index. We have calculated the Brightness Temperatures of the components (TB ) directly from the determined component sizes and also using the logarithmic variability amplitudes and timescales to calculate the TB s. Both the methods yielded measurements of source frame T Bs no higher than ∼a few × 10 12 K. We find that the observed average proper motion is 0.4 0.07 mas/yr, which corresponds to an apparent transverse velocity of 11 ± 2 c. Copyright © 2003 EDP Sciences. Abstract: We report a successful VLBI observation at 147 GHz (2.1 mm) on the 3 100 km long baseline between the telescopes at Metsahovi (Finland) and Pico Veleta (Spain). The sources 3C 273B and 3C 279 were detected with a SNR of∼10. For these sources we estimate that 25-30% of the total flux is detectable as correlated flux on the 3 100 km baseline, which gives at 147 GHz a lower limit of the brightness temperature of the inner VLBI jet region of ∼1×10 1 0 K.

3. Millimetre Continuum Variations, VLBI Structure and Gamma-rays: Investigating Shocked Jet Physics

Abstract: We compare the total flux density variations and the VLBI structural variations in a sample of 27 gamma-ray blazars. We find that all the radio variations are due to shocks; the flux of the underlying jet remains constant. A large fraction of the shocks grow and fade within the innermost 0.1 mas, appearing only as ‘core flares’. Comparisons with the EGRET data show that gamma-ray flares must come from the shocks, not from the jet. At the time of an EGRET flare, the shock is typically already over a parsec downstream from the radio core, beyond the accretion disk and/or the broad line region (BLR) photon fields. Thus, present models for gamma-ray production are inadequate, since they typically model the gamma-ray inverse Compton flux as coming from the jet, with significant disk or BLR external Compton components.

Abstract: The maximum intrinsic brightness temperature Tb, lim for powerful synchrotron-emitting radio sources is usually assumed to be ≈1012 K, limited by the inverse Compton catastrophe. A lower value of ≈5×1010 K, based on the equipartition brightness temperature, has been suggested by Readhead on the basis of Tb, obs distributions derived from VLBI observations. We present two new methods for estimating Tb, lim in extragalactic radio sources by using total flux density variations. A reasonable estimate of the value of Tb, lim for a source can be obtained by comparing the Doppler boosting factors derived from total flux density variations at 22 and 37 GHz with traditional estimates based on the radio and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) X-ray fluxes. Another independent estimate of Tb, lim is obtained by comparing the brightness temperatures derived from variability data with the values calculated from VLBI observations. Using several data sets, we find that both methods yield a value of ≤1011 K, in accordance with the equipartition brightness temperature limit proposed by Readhead.

Abstract: We study the jet kinematics of the blazar S5 0716+714 during its active state in 2003-2004 with multi-epoch VLBI observations. Aims. We present a kinematic analysis of the large-scale (0-12 mas) jet of 0716+714, based on the results of six epochs of VLBA monitoring at 5 GHz. Additionally, we compare kinematic results obtained with two imaging methods based on different deconvolution algorithms. The blazar 0716+714 has a diffuse large-scale jet and a very faint bright compact core. Experiments with simulated data showed that the conventional data reduction procedure based on the CLEAN deconvolution algorithm does not perform well in restoring this type of structure. This might be the reason why previous kinematic studies of this source yielded ambiguous results. In order to obtain accurate kinematics of this source, we independently applied two imaging techniques to the raw data: the conventional method, based on difference mapping, which uses CLEAN deconvolution, and the generalized maximum entropy method (GMEM) realized in the VLBImager package developed at the Pulkovo Observatory in Russia. The results of both methods give us a consistent kinematic scenario: the large-scale jet of 0716+714 is diffuse and stationary. Differences between the inner (0-1 mas) and outer (1-12 mas) regions of the jet in brightness and velocity of the components could be explained by the bending of the jet, which causes the angle between the jet direction and the line of sight to change from ~5 deg to ~11 deg. Abstract: The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios [superscript 2]H/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 3]He/[superscript 4]He, [superscript 6]Li/[superscript 7]Li, [superscript 7]Be/([superscript 9]Be+[superscript 10]Be), and [superscript 10]B/[superscript 11]B in the range 0.2-1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. Abstract: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 (June 1998) in a 51.7 deg orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A search for antihelium nuclei in the rigidity range 1–140 GV was performed. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1×10^−6 was obtained. The high energy proton, electron, positron, helium, antiproton and deuterium spectra were accurately measured. For each particle and nuclei two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum. Positrons in the second spectrum were found to be much more abundant than electrons. Tracing particles from the second spectra shows that most of them travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field, and that the positive particles (p and e+) and negative ones (e−) originate from two complementary geographic regions. The second helium spectrum flux over the energy range 0.1–1.2 GeV/nucleon was measured to be (6.3 ± 0.9) × 10^−3(m^2 s sr)^−1. Over 90 percent of the helium flux was determined to be 3He at the 90% confidence level

Abstract: The blazar OJ287 is the most promising (and the only) case for an extragalactic binary black hole system inspiralling under the action of gravitational radiation reaction. At present, though it is not possible to directly observe the binary components, it is possible to observe the jet emanating from the primary black hole. We have argued that the orbital motion of the secondary black hole is reflected in the wobble of the jet, and demonstrated that the wobble is orbital position dependent. The erratic wobble of the jet is analyzed by taking into account the binary nature of the system, and we have found that the erratic component of jet wobble is very small.

Abstract: The primary proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.2 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at an altitude of 380 km. The complete data set combining three shuttle attitudes and including all known systematic effects is presented.

Abstract: The lepton spectra in the kinetic energy ranges 0.2 to 40 GeV for e − and 0.2 to 3 GeV for e + were measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at altitudes near 380 km. From the origin of the leptons two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum with positrons much more abundant than electrons. Tracing leptons from the second spectra shows that most of these leptons travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that the e + and e − originate from two complementary geographic regions.

Abstract: The helium spectrum from 0.1 to 100 GeV/nucleon was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at altitudes near 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a second helium spectrum was observed. In the second helium spectra over the energy range 0.1 to 1.2 GeV/nucleon the flux was measured to be (6.3±0.9)×10 −3 ( m 2 sec sr ) −1 and more than ninety percent of the helium was determined to be 3He (at the 90% CL). Tracing helium from the second spectrum shows that about half of the 3He travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that they originate from restricted geographic regions similar to protons and positrons.

Abstract: The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70 m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Most of these second spectrum protons follow a complicated trajectory and originate from a restricted geographic region., 19 pages, Latex, 7 .eps figures

Abstract: We compare the Metsahovi 22 and 37 GHz total flux density variations of active galactic nuclei with EGRET Phase 1+2+3 gamma-ray data. There is a connection between the type of the source, the phase of the radio flare, the associated radio variability brightness temperature and the gamma-ray emission. It seems that the gamma emission originates within the same shocks which produce the synchrotron flares in radio—induced by the synchrotron self-Compton mechanism.

16. 22 GNz VLBI receiver at the Metsähovi Radio Research Station

Abstract: A dual channel, cooled low noise receiver at 22 GHz signal frequency has been designed and constructed. The noise temperature of the whole receiver measured in front of the feed horn is almost equal for both channels i.e. 60 K. The local oscillator system based originally on a 10 GHz MESFET DRO-stabilized oscil lator is phase locked using a highly stable 5 MHz maser frequency standard. The receiver has been already used successfully for several VLBI-observations at the Metsahovi Radio Research Station. The receiver consists of two separate parts: a cryogenically cooled front end containing a polarizer and two low noise HEMT preamplifiers and a dual channel, SSB-receiver operating at room temperature. The block diagram of the front end in a dewar (constructed of 15 mm thick aluminium sheets with glue joints) is shown in Figure 1. For cooling a helium refrigerator CTI Model M22 cold head and an air cooled compressor Model 8200 with cooling capacity of 1 W at 20 K is used. The signal is fed to a corrugated feed horn with a teflon lens. The horn mounting consists of a O-ring and it is rigidly screwed to the front wall of the dewar, the lens is attached to the surface of the horn with a vacuum tight connection. The polarizer input is a standard rectangular waveguide WR-42, thus a transition from a circular to rect angular waveguide is also needed.

17. Comparison of Total Flux and VLBI Properties of a Sample of 15 AGN at 22 GHz

Abstract: A sample of 15 bright AGN has been observed at 22 GHz with two epoch global VLBI observations. The sample consists of all sources in the complete 2 Jy catalogue of Valtaoja et al. (1992) previously unobserved at 22 GHz VLBI. We have begun to investigate how much structural information can be derived just from total flux density (TFD) monitoring and how to use total flux density observations to complement space VLBI observations. As an example we present Doppler boosting factors derived in four different methods.

Since we wish to apply the results of this debate to practical planning problems, we have omitted many of the refinements that have been suggested in the theoretical literature because we cannot yet meet the data and computing requirements which would be involved if we included all (the nevertheless relevant) aspects of environmental problems.

20. Studying the continuum spectrum of the parsec scale jets by multi-frequency VLBI measurements

Abstract: Multi-frequency VLBI observations allow studies of the continuum spectrum in the different parts of the parsec scale jets of AGN, providing information on the physical properties of the plasma and magnetic fields in them. Since VLBI networks cannot be scaled, the range of spatial frequencies observed differs significantly between the different observing frequencies, which makes it difficult to obtain a broadband spectrum of the individual emission features in the jet. In this paper we discuss a model-fitting based spectral extraction method, which can significantly relieve this problem. The method uses a priori knowledge of the source structure, measured at high frequencies, to allow at lower frequencies the derivation of the sizes and flux densities of even those emission features that have mutual separations significantly less than the Rayleigh limit at the given frequency. We have successfully used this method in the analysis of 5-86 GHz VLBA data of 3C273. The spectra and sizes of several individual jet features were measured, thus allowing derivation of the magnetic flux density and the energy density of the relativistic electrons in the different parts of the jet. Abstract: A measurement of the cosmic ray positron fraction e+ / (e+ + e-) in the energy range of 1-30 GeV is presented. The measurement is based on data taken by the AMS-01 experiment during its 10 day Space Shuttle flight in June 1998. Abstract: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the $\sim 100 \mathrm{MeV}$ to $1 \mathrm{TeV}$ range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected $10^8$ cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space station using secondary $\pi^-$ and $\mu^-$ emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with \emph{Mir}. 23. Removing Fluoride-Terminations from Multilayered V 2 C T x MXene by Gas Hydrolyzation.

Abstract: Two-dimensional MXenes have shown great promise for many different applications, but in order to fully utilize their potential, control of their termination groups is essential. Here we demonstrate hydrolyzation with a continuous gas flow as a method to remove F-terminations from multilayered V 2 C T x particles, in order to prepare nearly F-free and partly bare vanadium carbide MXene. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the substitution of F-terminations is thermodynamically feasible and presents partly nonterminated V 2 CO as the dominating hydrolyzation product. Hydrolyzation at elevated temperatures reduced the F content but only subtly changed the O content, as inferred from spectroscopic data. The ideal hydrolyzation temperature was found to be 300 °C, as a degradation of the V 2 C T x phase and a transition to vanadium oxycarbides and V 2 O 3 were observed at higher temperature. When tested as electrodes in Li-ion batteries, the hydrolyzed MXene demonstrated a reduced polarization compared with the pristine MXene, but no change in intercalation voltage was observed. Annealing in dry Ar did not result in the same F reduction, and the importance of water vapor was concluded, demonstrating hydrolyzation as a new and efficient method to control the surface terminations of multilayered V 2 C T x post etching. 24. Unimolecular Decomposition Reactions of Picric Acid and Its Methylated Derivatives─A DFT Study.

Abstract: To handle energetic materials safely, it is important to have knowledge about their sensitivity. Density functional theory (DFT) has proven a valuable tool in the study of energetic materials, and in the current work, DFT is employed to study the thermal unimolecular decomposition of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (picric acid, PA), 3-methyl-2,4,6-trinitrophenol (methyl picric acid, mPA), and 3,5-dimethyl-2,4,6-trinitrophenol (dimethyl picric acid, dmPA). These compounds have similar molecular structures, but according to the literature, mPA is far less sensitive to impact than the other two compounds. Three pathways believed important for the initiation reactions are investigated at 0 and 298.15 K. We compare the computed energetics of the reaction pathways with the objective of rationalizing the unexpected sensitivity behavior. Our results reveal a few if any significant differences in the energetics of the three molecules, and thus do not reflect the sensitivity deviations observed in experiments. These findings point toward the potential importance of crystal structure, crystal morphology, bimolecular reactions, or combinations thereof on the impact sensitivity of nitroaromatics.

25. Performance Study of MXene/Carbon Nanotube Composites for Current Collector- and Binder-Free Mg-S Batteries.

Abstract: The realization of sustainable and cheap Mg-S batteries depends on significant improvements in cycling stability. Building on the immense research on cathode optimization from Li-S batteries, for the first time a beneficial role of MXenes for Mg-S batteries is reported. Through a facile, low-temperature vacuum-filtration technique, several novel current collector- and binder-free cathode films were developed, with either dipenthamethylene thiuram tetrasulfide (PMTT) or S 8 nanoparticles as the source of redox-active sulfur. The importance of combining MXene with a high surface area co-host material, such as carbon nanotubes, was demonstrated. A positive effect of MXenes on the average voltage and reduced self-discharge was also discovered. Ascribed to the rich polar surface chemistry of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, an almost doubling of the discharge capacity (530 vs. 290 mA h g -1 ) was achieved by using MXene as a polysulfide-confining interlayer, obtaining a capacity retention of 83 % after 25 cycles., (© 2021 The Authors. 26. Time-Enhanced Performance of Oxide Thermoelectric Modules Based on a Hybrid p-n Junction.

Abstract: The present challenge with all-oxide thermoelectric modules is their poor durability at high temperatures caused by the instability of the metal-oxide interfaces at the hot side. This work explains a new module concept based on a hybrid p-n junction, fabricated in one step by spark plasma co-sintering of Ca 3 Co 4- x O 9+δ (CCO, p-type) and CaMnO 3-δ /CaMn 2 O 4 (CMO, n-type). Different module (unicouple) designs were studied to obtain a thorough understanding of the role of the in situ formed hybrid p-n junction of Ca 3 CoMnO 6 (CCMO, p-type) and Co-oxide rich phases (p-type) at the p-n junction (>700 °C) in the module performance. A time-enhanced performance of the modules attributed to this p-n junction formation was observed due to the unique electrical properties of the hybrid p-n junction being sufficiently conductive at high temperatures (>700 °C) and nonconductive at moderate and low temperatures. The alteration of module design resulted in a variation of the power density from 12.4 (3.1) to 28.9 mW/cm 2 (7.2 mW) at Δ T ∼ 650 °C after 2 days of isothermal hold (900 °C hot side). 27. Chemical stability of Ca 3 Co 4- x O 9+ δ /CaMnO 3- δ p-n junction for oxide-based thermoelectric generators.

Abstract: An all-oxide thermoelectric generator for high-temperature operation depends on a low electrical resistance of the direct p-n junction. Ca 3 Co 4- x O 9+ δ and CaMnO 3- δ exhibit p-type and n-type electronic conductivity, respectively, and the interface between these compounds is the material system investigated here. The effect of heat treatment (at 900 °C for 10 h in air) on the phase and element distribution within this p-n junction was characterized using advanced transmission electron microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction. The heat treatment resulted in counter diffusion of Ca, Mn and Co cations across the junction, and subsequent formation of a Ca 3 Co 1+ y Mn 1- y O 6 interlayer, in addition to precipitation of Co-oxide, and accompanying diffusion and redistribution of Ca across the junction. The Co/Mn ratio in Ca 3 Co 1+ y Mn 1- y O 6 varies and is close to 1 ( y = 0) at the Ca 3 Co 1+ y Mn 1- y O 6 -CaMnO 3- δ boundary. 28. Structure, electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties of perovskite-type oxides CaMn 1-x-y Ti x Fe y O 3-δ .

Abstract: Calcium manganite-based perovskite-type oxides hold promise for application in chemical looping combustion processes and oxygen transport membranes. In this study, we have investigated the structure, electrical conductivity and oxygen transport properties of perovskite-type oxides CaMn1-x-yTixFeyO3-δ. Distinct from previous work, data of high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) in the temperature range 600-1000 °C (with intervals of 25 °C) demonstrates that CaMnO3-δ (CM) transforms from orthorhombic to a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases between 875 °C and 900 °C. Rietveld refinements show the formation of a pure tetragonal phase at 975 °C and of a pure cubic phase at 1000 °C. Partial substitution of manganese by iron and/or titanium to yield CaMn0.875Ti0.125O3-δ (CMT), CaMn0.85Fe0.15O3-δ (CMF) or CaMn0.725Ti0.125Fe0.15O3-δ (CMTF) leads to different phase behaviours. While CMT remains orthorhombic up to the highest temperature covered by the HT-XRD experiments, CMF and CMTF undergo an orthorhombic → tetragonal → cubic sequence of phase transitions. Electrical conductivity relaxation measurements are conducted to determine the chemical diffusion coefficient (Dchem) and the surface exchange coefficient (kchem) of the materials. The results demonstrate that oxygen transport is hindered in the tetragonal phase, when occurring, which is attributed to a possible ordering of oxygen vacancies. The small polaron electrical conductivity of CM in the cited temperature range is lowered upon partial manganese substitution, by about 10% for CMF and up to half an order of magnitude for CMT and CMTF.

29. Thermoelectric Properties of Ca₃Co 2- x Mn x O₆ ( x = 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 0.75, and 1).

Abstract: High-temperature instability of the Ca₃Co 4- y O 9+ δ and CaMnO 3- δ direct p-n junction causing the formation of Ca₃Co 2- x Mn x O₆ has motivated the investigation of the thermoelectric performance of this intermediate phase. Here, the thermoelectric properties comprising Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity of Ca₃Co 2- x Mn x O₆ with x = 0.05, 0.2, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 are reported. Powders of the materials were synthesized by the solid-state method, followed by conventional sintering. The material Ca₃CoMnO₆ ( x = 1) demonstrated a large positive Seebeck coefficient of 668 μV/K at 900 °C, but very low electrical conductivity. Materials with compositions with x < 1 had lower Seebeck coefficients and higher electrical conductivity, consistent with small polaron hopping with an activation energy for mobility of 44 ± 6 kJ/mol and where both the concentration and mobility of hole charge carriers were proportional to 1- x . The conductivity reached about 11 S·cm -1 at 900 °C for x = 0.05. The material Ca₃Co 1.8 Mn 0.2 O₆ ( x = 0.2) yielded a maximum zT of 0.021 at 900 °C. While this value in itself is not high, the thermodynamic stability and self-assembly of Ca₃Co 2- x Mn x O₆ layers between Ca₃Co 4- y O 9+ δ and CaMnO 3- δ open for new geometries and designs of oxide-based thermoelectric generators.

30. All-Oxide Thermoelectric Module with in Situ Formed Non-Rectifying Complex p-p-n Junction and Transverse Thermoelectric Effect.

Abstract: All-oxide thermoelectric modules for energy harvesting are attractive because of high-temperature stability, low cost, and the potential to use nonscarce and nontoxic elements. Thermoelectric modules are mostly fabricated in the conventional π-design, associated with the challenge of unstable metallic interconnects at high temperature. Here, we report on a novel approach for fabrication of a thermoelectric module with an in situ formed p-p-n junction made of state-of-the-art oxides Ca 3 Co 4- x O 9+δ (p-type) and CaMnO 3 -CaMn 2 O 4 composite (n-type). The module was fabricated by spark plasma co-sintering of p- and n-type powders partly separated by insulating LaAlO 3 . Where the n- and p-type materials originally were in contact, a layer of p-type Ca 3 CoMnO 6 was formed in situ. The hence formed p-p-n junction exhibited Ohmic behavior and a transverse thermoelectric effect, boosting the open-circuit voltage of the module. The performance of the module was characterized at 700-900 °C, with the highest power output of 5.7 mW (around 23 mW/cm 2 ) at 900 °C and a temperature difference of 160 K. The thermoelectric properties of the p- and n-type materials were measured in the temperature range 100-900 °C, where the highest zT of 0.39 and 0.05 were obtained at 700 and 800 °C, respectively, for Ca 3 Co 4- x O 9+δ and the CaMnO 3 -CaMn 2 O 4 composite., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Abstract: Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are transient flares produced when a star is ripped apart by the gravitational field of a supermassive black hole (SMBH). We have observed a transient source in the western nucleus of the merging galaxy pair Arp 299 that radiated >1.5 × 10 52 erg at infrared and radio wavelengths but was not luminous at optical or x-ray wavelengths. We interpret this as a TDE with much of its emission reradiated at infrared wavelengths by dust. Efficient reprocessing by dense gas and dust may explain the difference between theoretical predictions and observed luminosities of TDEs. 32. Chemical tracer diffusion of Sr and Co in polycrystalline Ca-deficient CaMnO 3-δ with CaMn 2 O 4 precipitates.

Abstract: Diffusivity on the A- and B-site of polycrystalline perovskite CaMnO 3-δ with Ca deficiency and spinel CaMn 2 O 4 (marokite) as a secondary phase was studied using chemical tracers and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) complemented by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Thin films containing Sr and Co chemical tracers were deposited on the polished surface of the polycrystalline composite sample followed by annealing at 800-1200 °C for 96 h. Diffusion profiles for each tracer were determined with SIMS, followed by calculation of diffusion coefficients by fitting to appropriate models. The Sr tracer showed mainly lattice diffusion, with an activation energy of 210 ± 30 kJ mol -1 , whereas the Co tracer showed a combination of lattice and enhanced grain-boundary diffusion, with activation energies of 270 ± 30 kJ mol -1 and 380 ± 40 kJ mol -1 , respectively. The diffusivities may be used to predict interdiffusion and lifetime of junctions between n-type CaMnO 3-δ or CaMnO 3-δ /CaMn 2 O 4 composites and metallization interlayers or p-type leg materials in oxide thermoelectrics. In particular, the relatively high effective diffusivity of Co in polycrystalline CaMnO 3-δ may play a role in the reported fast formation of the secondary phase (Ca 3 Co 2-y Mn y O 6 ) between p-type Ca 3 Co 3.92 O 9+δ and n-type CaMnO 3-δ in a direct p-n thermoelectric junction.

33. Emotion understanding, parent mental state language, and behavior problems in internationally adopted children.

Abstract: Internationally adopted postinstitutionalized (PI) children are at risk for lower levels of emotion understanding. This study examined how postadoption parenting influences emotion understanding and whether lower levels of emotion understanding are associated with behavior problems. Emotion understanding and parent mental state language were assessed in 3-year-old internationally adopted PI children (N = 25), and comparison groups of children internationally adopted from foster care (N = 25) and nonadopted (NA) children (N = 36). At 5.5-year follow-up, PI children had lower levels of emotion understanding than NA children, a group difference not explained by language. In the total sample, parent mental state language at age 3 years predicted 5.5-year emotion understanding after controlling for child language ability. The association of parent mental state language and 5.5-year emotion understanding was moderated by adoption status, such that parent mental state language predicted 5.5-year emotion understanding for the internationally adopted children, but not for the NA children. While postadoption experience does not erase negative effects of early deprivation on emotion understanding, results suggest that parents can promote emotion understanding development through mental state talk. At 5.5 years, PI children had more internalizing and externalizing problems than NA children, and these behavioral problems related to lower levels of emotion understanding.

34. High temperature X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetrical analysis of the cubic perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ under different atmospheres.

Abstract: Ba(0.5)Sr(0.5)Co(0.8)Fe(0.2)O(3-δ) (BSCF) with the cubic perovskite structure is known to be metastable at low temperature under an oxidizing atmosphere. Here, the thermal and chemical expansion of BSCF were studied by in situ high temperature powder X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetrical analysis (TGA) in partial pressure of oxygen ranging from an inert atmosphere (∼10(-4) bar) to 10 bar O(2). The BSCF powder, heat treated at 1000 °C and quenched to ambient temperature prior to the analysis, was shown to oxidize under an oxidizing atmosphere before thermal reduction took place. With decreasing partial pressure of oxygen the initial oxidation was suppressed and only reduction of Co/Fe and loss of oxygen were observed under an inert atmosphere. The thermal expansion of BSCF under different atmospheres was determined from the thermal evolution of the cubic unit cell parameter, demonstrating that the thermal expansion of BSCF depends on the atmosphere. Chemical expansion of BSCF was also estimated based on the diffraction data and thermo-gravimetrical analysis. A hexagonal perovskite phase, coexisting with the cubic BSCF polymorph, was observed to be formed above 600 °C during heating. The phase separation leading to the formation of the hexagonal polymorph was driven by oxidation, and the unit cell of the cubic BSCF was shown to decrease with increasing amounts of the hexagonal phase. The hexagonal phase disappeared upon further heating, accompanied with an expansion of the unit cell of the cubic BSCF.

35. Impurity diffusion of (141)Pr in LaMnO(3), LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) materials.

Abstract: The impurity diffusion of Pr(3+) in dense polycrystalline LaMnO(3), LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) was studied at 1373-1673 K in air in order to investigate cation diffusion in these materials. Cation distribution profiles were measured by secondary-ion mass spectrometry and it was found that penetration profiles of Pr(3+) had two distinct regions with different slopes. The first, shallow region was used to evaluate the bulk diffusion coefficients. The activation energies for bulk diffusion of Pr(3+) in LaMnO(3), LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) were 126 +/- 6, 334 +/- 68 and 258 +/- 75 kJ mol(-1), respectively, which are significantly lower than previously predicted by atomistic simulations. The bulk diffusion of Pr(3+) in LaMnO(3) was enhanced compared to LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) due to higher concentrations of intrinsic point defects in LaMnO(3), especially La site vacancies. Grain-boundary diffusion coefficients of Pr(3+) in LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) materials were evaluated according to the Whipple-Le Claire equation. Activation energies for grain-boundary diffusion of Pr(3+) in LaCoO(3) and LaFeO(3) materials were 264 +/- 41 kJ mol(-1) and 290 +/- 36 kJ mol(-1) respectively. Finally, a correlation between activation energies for cation diffusion in bulk and along grain boundaries in pure and substituted LaBO(3) materials (B = Cr, Fe, Co) is discussed.

36. Cation self-diffusion in LaCoO(3) and La(2)CoO(4) studied by diffusion couple experiments.

Abstract: Reaction kinetics between dense, polycrystalline pellets of La2O3 and CoO were investigated at temperatures of 1370-1673 K and oxygen partial pressures of 40 Pa - 50 kPa. At high oxygen partial pressures, single phase LaCoO3 was formed. The growth of the LaCoO3 phase followed the parabolic rate law. The location of Pt markers demonstrated that diffusion of Co3+ cations in LaCoO3 dominated over diffusion of La3+. The diffusion coefficient of Co3+ was determined from the parabolic rate constant, and an activation energy of (250 +/- 10) kJ mol-1 was found. The diffusion coefficient of Co3+ in LaCoO3 decreased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure. At the lowest oxygen partial pressure investigated, two product phases, LaCoO3 and La2CoO4, were observed. The diffusion coefficient of Co cations in La2CoO4 was estimated. Results were discussed in relation to cation diffusion in other LnBO3 oxides (B = Cr3+, Mn3+, Fe3+). A correlation between diffusion of the B cation and the melting point was found for LnBO3 materials.
