In 2015 and 2016, atmospheric transport modeling challenges were conducted in the context of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) verification, however, with a more limited scope with respect to emission inventories, simulation period and number of relevant samples (i.e., those above the Minimum Detectable Concentration (MDC)) involved. Therefore, a more comprehensive atmospheric transport modeling challenge was organized in 2019. Stack release data of Xe-133 were provided by the Institut National des Radioéléments/IRE (Belgium) and the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories/CNL (Canada) and accounted for in the simulations over a three (mandatory) or six (optional) months period. Best estimate emissions of additional facilities (radiopharmaceutical production and nuclear research facilities, commercial reactors or relevant research reactors) of the Northern Hemisphere were included as well. Model results were compared with observed atmospheric activity concentrations at four International Monitoring System (IMS) stations located in Europe and North America with overall considerable influence of IRE and/or CNL emissions for evaluation of the participants' runs. Participants were prompted to work with controlled and harmonized model set-ups to make runs more comparable, but also to increase diversity. It was found that using the stack emissions of IRE and CNL with daily resolution does not lead to better results than disaggregating annual emissions of these two facilities taken from the literature if an overall score for all stations covering all valid observed samples is considered. A moderate benefit of roughly 10% is visible in statistical scores for samples influenced by IRE and/or CNL to at least 50% and there can be considerable benefit for individual samples. Effects of transport errors, not properly characterized remaining emitters and long IMS sampling times (12-24 h) undoubtedly are in contrast to and reduce the benefit of high-quality IRE and CNL stack data. Complementary best estimates for remaining emitters push the scores up by 18% compared to just considering IRE and CNL emissions alone. Despite the efforts undertaken the full multi-model ensemble built is highly redundant. An ensemble based on a few arbitrary runs is sufficient to model the Xe-133 background at the stations investigated. The effective ensemble size is below five. An optimized ensemble at each station has on average slightly higher skill compared to the full ensemble. However, the improvement (maximum of 20% and minimum of 3% in RMSE) in skill is likely being too small for being exploited for an independent period.

PurposeMelanoma is one of the most aggressive cancer with 1.6% of total cancer deaths in United States. In recent years treatment options for metastatic melanoma have been improved by the FDA approval of new therapeutic agents. However, these inhibitors based therapies are non-specific and have severe toxicities including hyperkeratosis, photosensitivity, hepatitis, arthralgia and fatigue. The aim of this study is to determine the synthetic lethal effect (paclitaxel and radiations) on melanoma cells and reduce the total radiation doses by increasing the dose rates up to 2400 MU/min.MethodsWe previously reported a radiation treatment (10 MV x-rays, 10X-FFF, dose rate 2400MU/min, low total dose 0.5 Gy) that kills melanoma cells with 80% survival of normal HEM in vitro. In this study we extended the radiation cycle up to four and include paclitaxel treatment to study the synthetic lethal effect on melanoma and two additional normal primary cells, HDF and HEK. Cells were treated with paclitaxel prior to radiations of dose rate of 400 and 2400 MU/min with total radiation dose of only 0.5 Gy. To study induction of apoptosis and cell death, mitochondria respiration assay, DNA damage assay and colony formation assay were performed.ResultsFour days of consequent radiation treatment with paclitaxel significantly reduces the survival of melanoma cells by inducing of apoptosis and mitochondrial damages. After treatment, excessive DNA damage in melanoma cells leads to increase in expression of pro-apoptotic genes (Casp3) and decrease in expression of DNA repair gene (PARP1) and anti-apoptotic gene (Bcl2) to activate apoptosis pathway. Combination of paclitaxel and radiations reduces the survival of melanoma cells colonies when compared to radiation alone.ConclusionOur study indicates radiations with paclitaxel has potential synthetic lethal effect on melanoma cells and can be develop as therapy for melanoma without having toxicities or harmful effects to normal primary skin cells.

Owing to tunability of MTJ stack characteristics based on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy control via sophisticated magnetic material engineering, STT-MRAM can meet a wide range of product specifications for various applications: 1) flash-type applications such as microcontroller and AI inferencing device and 2) SRAM-type applications such as frame buffer memory. However each application has different reliability challenges. In this paper, we discuss the reliability requirements for Flash-type and SRAM-type STT-MRAM, verifying superb reliability of highly tunable STT-MRAM technology.

We present the world-first demonstration of 28-nm embedded MRAM (eMRAM) for frame buffer memory, highlighting the smallest macro size (0.08 mm2/Mb) reported to date. Compared to SRAM that is commonly used for frame buffer memory, eMRAM provides 47% area saving. For frame buffer applications, read disturbance and endurance are the most critical reliability considerations. With magnetic tunnel junction process improvements, we have verified sufficient read disturbance margins and met the endurance requirement (> 1E10 cycles) which corresponds to 10-year continuous usage. Compared to flash-type eMRAM, we have achieved 40% switching current reduction with < 50ns read/write speed.

In the absence of randomized controlled data and even propensity-matched data, indications for, and outcomes of, laparoscopic repeat liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain uncertain. This study aimed to clarify the current indications for laparoscopic repeat liver resection for HCC, and to evaluate outcomes.Forty-two liver surgery centres around the world registered patients who underwent repeat liver resection for HCC. Patient characteristics, preoperative liver function, tumour characteristics, surgical method, and short- and long-term outcomes were recorded.Analyses showed that the laparoscopic procedure was generally used in patients with relatively poor performance status and liver function, but favourable tumour characteristics. Intraoperative blood loss (mean(s.d.) 254(551) versus 748(1128) ml; P 0·001), duration of operation (248(156) versus 285(167) min; P 0·001), morbidity (12·7 versus 18·1 per cent; P = 0·006) and duration of postoperative hospital stay (10·1(14·3) versus 11·8(11·8) days; P = 0·013) were significantly reduced for laparoscopic compared with open procedures, whereas survival time was comparable (median 10·04 versus 8·94 years; P = 0·297). Propensity score matching showed that laparoscopic repeat liver resection for HCC resulted in less intraoperative blood loss (268(730) versus 497(784) ml; P = 0·001) and a longer operation time (272(187) versus 232(129); P = 0·007) than the open approach, and similar survival time (12·55 versus 8·94 years; P = 0·086).Laparoscopic repeat liver resection is feasible in selected patients with recurrent HCC.Dado que no existen ensayos clínicos controlados ni estudios de datos emparejados por puntaje de propensión, todavía hay dudas sobre las indicaciones y los resultados de la resección iterativa laparocópica de un carcinoma hepatocelular (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC). Este estudio tuvo como objetivo esclarecer las indicaciones actuales y los resultados de la resección hepática laparoscópica iterativa del HCC. MÉTODOS: Se incluyeron los pacientes de 42 centros de cirugía hepática a nivel mundial en los que se había realizado una resección hepática iterativa por HCC. Se analizaron las características del paciente, la función hepática preoperatoria, las características del tumor, el abordaje quirúrgico y los resultados a corto y largo plazo.El análisis demostró que la vía laparoscópica generalmente se utilizaba en pacientes con carácteristicas tumorales favorables, pero con estado funcional y función hepatica relativamente peores. La pérdida de sangre intraoperatoria (254,3 ± 551,2 versus 748,0 ± 1127,7 mL, P 0,001), la duración de la intervención (247,6 ± 155,8 versus 285,1 ± 167,0 minutos, P 0,001), la morbilidad (12,7 versus 18,1%, P = 0,005) y la estancia hospitalaria postoperatoria (10,07 ± 14,29 versus 11,80 ± 11,79 días, P = 0,010) fueron significativamente menores para los pacientes tratados por via laparoscópica en comparacion con la vía abierta, mientra que el tiempo de supervivencia fue comparable (mediana 10,04 versus 8,94 años, P = 0,297). El estudio de emparejamiento por puntaje de propensión mostró que la resección hepática iterativa por vía laparoscópica de un HCC (frente a la vía abierta) conllevaba una menor pérdida sanguínea intraoperatoria (268,0 ± 730,2 versus 496,5 ± 784,2 mL, P = 0,01), una mayor duración de la intervención (272,1 ± 187,2 versus 231,8 ± 129,1 minutos , P = 0,07) y un tiempo de supervivencia similar (mediana 12,55 versus 8,94 años, P = 0,0855). Background Hepatitis B core antibody-positive (HBcAb+) graft is known as a risk for de novo hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in recipients after liver transplantation (LT). However, little is known about the possibility or incidence of de novo HBV infections after LT in hepatitis B surface antigen-negative (HBsAg−)/HBcAb+ recipients using HBsAg−/HBcAb− grafts. The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of de novo HBV infection in HBsAg−/HBcAb+ recipients using HBsAg−/HBcAb− grafts. A retrospective review was performed with the records of 1129 adult patients who underwent primary LT at a single institution in an HBV endemic area between January 2000 and December 2013. A total of 78 patients (6.9%) were reviewed for de novo HBV infection after LT. De novo HBV infection was developed in 1 patient (1.28%). The patient was a 65-year-old woman who underwent LT due to alcoholic liver cirrhosis. De novo HBV was not related to graft loss or death and well treated with tenofovir. In conclusion, de novo HBV infections may occur in HBsAg-/HBcAb+ recipients using HBsAg−/HBcAb− grafts, and caution is needed in these patients.

Herein, we report our experience of performing allogeneic orthotopic liver transplantation (LT) in nonhuman primates. We designed an allogeneic ABO-compatible orthotopic LT model in monkeys in a manner similar to that used in humans. We applied almost the same surgical procedures used for human conventional deceased donor LT. A total of 6 monkeys underwent allogeneic LT. One cynomolgus monkey aged 45 months (3.4 kg) and 5 rhesus macaque monkeys aged 50.2 ± 14.8 months (5.40 ± 0.33 kg) were used as recipients. In the donor surgery, the liver was perfused in situ through the aorta using cold histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution. The portal vein (diameter, 5-10 mm), supra- and infra-hepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) (diameter, 12-15 mm), and common bile duct (diameter, 1.5-3.0 mm) were dissected out. The hepatic artery was kept in continuity with the celiac trunk and abdominal aorta up to the iliac bifurcation (diameter, 5-6 mm). The mean graft weight was 102.0 g (94.8-111.0 g). Recipient surgery was conducted in parallel. After recipient hepatectomy, the graft was implanted. The suprahepatic IVC and portal vein were anastomosed to those of the graft. After reperfusion, the infrahepatic IVC was anastomosed. The aorta conduit of the graft was anastomosed to the infrarenal aorta of the recipient in a retrocolic end-to-side manner. Biliary reconstruction was performed in a duct-to-duct anastomosis with cholecystectomy. Mean operative time was 107.0 minutes for donor and 198.2 minutes for recipient. There was one operative death due to unknown cause. In conclusion, for allogeneic orthotopic LT in nonhuman primate model, we can apply almost the same procedure used for human conventional deceased donor LT in a similar manner.

Malignant mesonephric tumor (MMT) is a relatively uncommon malignancy of the female genital tract. The diagnosis of metastatic MMT is difficult because cytological, pathological, immunohistochemical characteristics of MMT are under-recognized. The authors present a 55-year-old female with metastatic pulmonary nodules. The bronchial washing cytology revealed three dimensional clusters of bland epithelial cells with slight nuclear grooves. A corresponding lung histology had ductal or tubular clusters of epithelial cells with intraglandular eosinophilic materials. These epithelial cells were positive for immunohistochemical stain of CD10, suggesting metastasis from MMT. The cervical smear showed clusters of bland, gland-forming epithelial cells with intraglandular eosinophilic materials. On histologic examination, mesonephric adenocarcinoma with papillary and solid proliferation was identified in the uterine cervix. A review of the literature for 72 cases of MMT is also included. Clinical and cytopathological features of MMT are herein made available.

Background: Amplification of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) gene and concomitant protein overexpression are present in 20-25% of breast cancers. HER2 overexpression and/or gene amplification is associated with a worse clinical outcome and an important predictive marker for sensitivity to anthracycline-based chemotherapy and HER2- targeted therapy. In Korea, the HER2 status has usually been assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in the laboratories. To verify the preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic factors of IHC in multi-institutions, we assessed the interlaboratory variability of HER2 IHC by comparing the local IHC with the central IHC and SISH results, as a first step toward building a nationwide quality assurance program. Methods: The Breast Pathology Study Group of Korean Society of Pathologists collected 1,198 breast carcinoma samples from 7 university-based hospitals and constructed 56 tissue microarray (TMA) blocks with triplicate of 1 mm cores. Local IHC results for HER2 were obtained from 1,130 patients. We performed IHC (PATHWAY anti-HER2/neu (4B5) rabbit monoclonal antibody, Ventana Medical Systems) and SISH (INFORM HER2 DNA Probe Kit, Ventana Medical Systems) for HER2 on the TMA sections using the automated Benchmark platform (Ventana Medical Systems). We interpreted the results according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists guidelines. Results from local IHC were compared with central IHC and SISH. The concordant rates between central IHC and SISH results were also calculated. Results: The total percentage of cases in each category of local IHC score was: 0/1+, 70.4%; 2+, 8.8% (range among hospitals, 0-36%); and 3+, 20.8% (10.8-28.8%). The percentage of central IHC results (1,110 patients) in each category was: 0/1+, 79.7%; 2+, 3.6% (1.1-8.3%); and 3+, 16.7% (13.1-18.8%). SISH results were obtained from 1,033 patients: negative, 79.5%; equivocal, 0.2% (0-1.6%); and positive, 20.3% (19.2-22.6%). SISH amplifications in each local IHC category were observed as follows: 0/1+, 4.3% (0.6-10%); 2+, 18.8% (5.6-66.7%); and 3+, 71.2% (50-97.3%). When considering the central SISH as gold standard, 3% of cases (30/995) were false negative and 6.3% (63/995) were false positive in local IHC. In central lab, the concordance rates between IHC 3+ and SISH-positive, and IHC 0/1+ and SISH-negative were 95.5% and 98%, respectively. Conclusions: The results of central IHC and SISH markedly decreased the interlaboratory variability of HER2 status. The measurement of HER2 gene amplification by SISH was less affected by the preanalytic factors than the measurement of overexpression of HER2 protein by IHC. Because the rate of false positivity is higher than that of false negativity in the local IHC, the quality assurance program needs to be focused on decreasing not only the false negativity, but also the false positivity of HER2 IHC in local laboratories Citation Information: Cancer Res 2010;70(24 Suppl):Abstract nr P4-08-05.

This study was to investigate a time course of erythema and pigmentation induced by UVA-1, broadband UVA (BBUVA), narrowband UVB (NBUVB) and broadband UVB (BBUVB).Ten volunteers participated in this study for 6 months. Four skin areas, from the back of each subject, were irradiated with two minimal erythema dose (MED) of four different UV wavelengths corresponding to UVA-1, BBUVA, NBUVB and BBUVB.For both UVA-1 and BBUVA, erythema and pigmentation were most pronounced immediately and 1 h after exposure. Erythema rapidly diminished but pigmentation persisted throughout the study. For both NBUVB and BBUVB, test areas reacted with erythema of maximum intensity at 1 and 2 days, respectively. A maximum tanning was reached at 3-6 days for NBUVB and 4-7 days for BBUVB, and the return toward the original point was at 1 and 3 months, respectively.Two MED of UVA produced far prolonged erythema and pigmentation than UVB. For UVA, UVA-1 and BBUVA showed similar intensity and time course of skin reaction. For UVB, erythema and pigmentation produced by NBUVB were milder in intensity and shorter in a time course than those by BBUVB.

Backgrounds/aims: Although multiple studies have been reported about the biological effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiations, the comparative and long-term reactions of human skin by several different UV-wavebands were not reported. No significant difference was found in visual and colorimetric evaluation for the time course of skin color changes. For UVB, erythema and pigmentation produced by NBUVB were milder in intensity and shorter in time course than those by BBUVB. These results would provide standard data on time courses and intensity of skin color changes by different UV wavelengths.

As for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the most frequent site of failure after curative intent resection is the liver. We identified the risk factors for locoregional recurrence after curative intent resection for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Medical records of 115 patients treated with surgical resection alone for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma from November 2000 to December 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Locoregional failure was defined as recurrence within 20 mm from resection margin or regional lymph node. Overall survival and locoregional recurrence rates were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier methods, and the prognostic factors were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards model. Median follow-up duration of surviving patients was 61 months (range 8–139). Sixty-six patients had recurrence, and 45 of 66 patients (68 %) had locoregional recurrence. The 5-year overall survival and locoregional control rates were 49.1 and 51.6 %, respectively. ≥T2b disease and R1 resection were associated with locoregional recurrence in multivariate analysis. Patients were divided into two groups whether these risk factors exist or not. The 5-year locoregional control rates of low (no risk factor n = 64) and high (1 or 2 risk factors n = 51) risk groups were 62.5 and 34.7 %, respectively (P = 0.001). After curative intent resection, locoregional control and survival of patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma were far from satisfactory. Further studies are needed to evaluate the potential benefit of adjuvant locoregional treatment such as radiotherapy for patients with high-risk factors (≥T2b disease or R1 resection).

We report a case of cutaneous protothecosis treated successfully with oral fluconazole. Fluconazole appears to be an effective alternative to conventional drugs for the treatment of cutaneous protothecosis. Cutaneous protothecosis is an uncommon infection due to achlorophyllic, saprophytic, algae-like unicellular organisms of the genus Prototheca that occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. To date there is no standard treatment regimen. Surgical excision, oral ketoconazole, intravenous amphotericin B alone or in combination with oral tetracycline have been reported to be effective in the management of protothecosis. 1-3 We report a 55-year-old immunocompetent woman with cutaneous protothecosis which developed at the site of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide injection, who was successfully treated with oral fluconazole.

Introduction Preeclampsia (PE) is a leading cause of maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. However, the pathophysiology of this disease is not yet fully understood. MiRNA plays an important role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. Recent studies have suggested that dysregulation of miRNAs in placental tissue is involved in the pathogenesis of PE. Therefore, we investigated miRNA profiles in PE placenta to understand the miRNA function in PE pathogenesis. Methods MiRNA profiling was performed in 20 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples (10 placentas from severe PE and 10 from a control group). We used a hybridization-based microarray with a PNA-probe comprised of 158 miRNAs. Results Thirteen miRNAs (miR-92b, miR-197, miR-342-3p, miR-296-5p, miR-26b, miR-25, miR-296-3p, miR-26a, miR-198, miR-202, miR-191, miR-95, and miR-204) were significantly overexpressed and two miRNAs (miR-21 and miR-223) were underexpressed in PE compared with the control group. Among 15 differentially expressed miRNAs, miR-26b, miR-296-5p, and miR-223 were found to be consistent with results from previous studies. We identified 893 genes that were predicted by at least three of four computational algorithms. Target genes participated in several signaling pathways, adherens junction, focal adhesion, and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. Conclusions Several miRNAs are found to be dysregulated in placentas of PE patients and they seem to be closely associated with the early pathogenesis of PE. Further study is necessary to develop tools for early detection and management.

Perovskite La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films were deposited on MgO(001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Effects of deposition conditions, such as laser fluence, substrate temperature, and oxygen pressure, on growth behaviors of the films were investigated over a wide range. Epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin films were able to be grown in situ under conditions such as 1.5–2.1 J/cm2 laser fluence, 650–750 °C substrate temperature, and 100–300 mTorr oxygen pressure. The oxygen pressure during the deposition is found to be closely related to crystalline orientations of the films. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy measurements show that the epitaxial La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films have compositions similar to those of targets, demonstrating that pulsed laser deposition is a useful technique to get thin films with complicated chemical compositions. The magnetoresistance, −ΔR(6T)/R(0), of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin film was about −80%, which is smaller than the reported values (i.e., ∼−99.92%) of the La...

31P MAS and 11B NMR are used for structural investigations on glass samples with chemical composition (1 − X) [NaPO3−R Na2B4O7]−X Ca5(PO4)3OH. For the sodocalciphosphate glasses (R = 0), the 31 P MAS NMR spectra show a shortening of the length of metaphosphate chains together with the formation of chain ends, when X increases. The Ca2+ cations probably “cross-link” the short phosphate chains. From 11 B NMR spectra of the sodocalcicborophosphate glasses (R > 0), the boron atom fraction in four-fold coordination is determined. In the phosphate rich glasses, the borate groups, mainly under the BO form are used as branching between short phosphate chains. For R > 0.2 borate groups including boron atoms in three- and four-fold coordination such as those found in pure vitreous Na2B4O7 are considered. The phosphate units are located out of the borate network. The extent of the vitreous domain and the physical and chemical properties are correlated with these different structures.

Giant congenital melanocytic naevi (GCMN) are known risk factors for the development of melanoma. However, melanoma risk among Asians is rarely evaluated.To evaluate the clinical characteristics and risk of melanoma development from GCMN in Koreans, we performed a nationwide retrospective cohort study in Korea. GCMN were defined as those comprising ≥5% body surface area in children or measuring ≥20cm in adults.In total, 131 patients with GCMN were enrolled, with a mean age of 10·3years (range: birth-70years).The posterior trunk was the most common site (67, 51·1%), followed by lateral trunk, anterior trunk, legs, both anterior and posterior trunk, buttocks, and arms. Satellite naevi were present in 69 cases (52·7%), and axial areas were more commonly involved in patients with satellite naevi than in those without satellite lesions. Atypical features such as rete ridge elongation and bridges were seen, and, among these, pagetoid spread and ballooning cell changes were more common in patients4years old. Proliferative nodules were found in three cases. Melanomas had developed in three of 131 patients (2·3%; a 6-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and a 70-year-old man), and the incidence rate was 990 per 100000 person-years. Melanomas in these three patients consisted of two cutaneous melanomas and one extracutaneous meningeal melanoma.We should be aware of melanoma development from GCMN, and lifelong follow-up is required due to the risk of melanoma arising in GCMN.

Investigating the scaling behavior of annealed Ga1-xMnxAs anomalous Hall coefficients, we note a universal crossover regime where the scaling behavior changes from quadratic to linear. Furthermore, measured anomalous Hall conductivities in the quadratic regime when properly scaled by carrier concentration remain constant, spanning nearly a decade in conductivity as well as over 100 K in T_[C] and comparing favorably to theoretically predicated values for the intrinsic origins of the anomalous Hall effect. Both qualitative and quantitative agreements strongly point to the validity of new equations of motion including the Berry phase contributions as well as the tunability of the anomalous Hall effect.

The depth dependent carrier density was measured on an arsenic implanted silicon sample using scanning capacitance microscopy (SCM). The capacitance versus voltage scan was performed by applying dc biases with a dither ac signal. A strong dc bias dependence was observed at the interface of an abrupt junction between n+ and p. The bias dependent SCM images show good agreement with quasi-three dimensional simulations, suggesting that they can be used to map a device structure.

A method for assessing the effectiveness of protective actions against a nuclear accident has been developed by means of the concept of fuzzy theory. The method is applied for assessing the evacuation time in emergency planning zone(EPZ) of Uljin nuclear site. The parameters related to evacuation such as population density and transportation were represented by fuzzy membership functions. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it can provide for incorporating the opinions of experts and the site specific conditions in which protective actions are taken.

Thermally stimulated currents (TSC) of ionomer/polyethylene blends were investigated. Experimental results obtained for aluminum, indium, lead, pressed gold, and evaporated gold electrodes are reported. The peak temperature and peak current observed for the high-temperature alpha peak was found to vary approximately linearly with the literature value of the work function of the metal. This is ascribed to differences in the ease of electron injection and its microscopic reverse. The lower temperature beta peaks showed differences with different electrode metals. Positive beta peaks were observed using lead electrodes whereas the gold electrodes always produced negative beta peaks. With aluminum electrodes, homopolymers showed negative beta peaks. Variables such as the partial oxidation of the metal and possible morphologic changes of the polymeric sample during the electrode evaporation were considered. After examining the effect on TSC of the various metal electrodes, evaporated gold was chosen as the best electrode for material TSC studies. >

We report three children with clinical features of pityriasis lichenoides (scaly red to brown papules and macules) in whom there were histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (disproportionate epidermotropism, Pautrier's microabscesses, and wiry and coarse collagen bundles). Immunohistochemical staining revealed a prevalence of T lymphocytes in the infiltrate. T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 serology was negative in the two patients in whom this test was performed. Thus, lesions resembling pityriasis lichenoides can be an unusual and potentially misleading presentation of mycosis fungoides.

We report a case of epithelioid leiomyosarcoma that developed on the nose of a 55-year-old Korean male over a one year period. The lesion was a pea sized, firm, erythematous, painless nodule with erosion in the center. Histologic examination revealed short spindled cells with blunt-ended nuclei and pleomorphic round to oval epithelioid cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm that were perivascular and densely packed in the dermis. Immunostaining for desmin was negative, although stains for vimentin and smooth muscle actin were both strongly positive.

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma is an exceedingly rare tumor: only 44 cases have been reported. We report a case of ameloblastic fibrosarcoma with high-grade malignancy and discuss the clinical and histologic features.

Ten granulosa cell tumors of the ovary were investigated using clinicopathologic and flow cytometric parameters. Three of the patients had recurrent or metastatic lesions 3 to 9 years after resection of the primary ovarian tumor. These three cases demonstrated diploidy in both the primary tumor and metastatic or recurrent lesions. Among the seven cases without recurrence, five had diploid DNA indexes. One case was characterized by a high degree of cytologic atypia and tetraploidy (DNA index, 1.98); this patient died of metastatic breast cancer 4 years after resection of the ovarian tumor. Another case demonstrated a high mitotic rate and exhibited aneuploidy (DNA index, 1.33); this woman was alive and well at 5 years of follow-up. In this study, no correlation was found between the recurrence rate and ploidy but, in view of the small numbers and limited follow-up, we cannot definitively analyze these prognostic factors. It does not appear feasible to predict the clinical course of granulosa cell tumors by DNA flow cytometry. However, it can be concluded that: (1) most granulosa cell tumors have diploid DNA content and (2) DNA ploidy correlates well with histologic factors, such as cellular anaplasia and high mitotic activity, which may have predictive prognostic value for granulosa cell tumors.

A semi-empirical tight-binding (TB) method is used to investigate the lattice relaxation around isovalent impurities and its effect on the vibrational properties of semiconductors. In terms of the revised Hartree-Fock atomic-term values, this technique provides simple analytical expressions for the change in the impurity-host bond energy and suggests a computationally efficient and reasonable method to estimate the bond-length distortions. Numerical calculations for the symmetric lattice relaxations are reported for eighty cases of impurity-host systems in nineteen elemental and compound semiconductors. For GaAs: In, InAs: Ga, GaP:As, GaAs: P, ZnSe: Te and ZnTe: Se, the results are found to be in good agreement with the recent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) data and, in other cases, the bond-length distortions are seen to be compatible with the theoretical values reported by Martins and Zunger (1984). A dynamical strongly interacting particle theory is presented. The theory explicitly exhibits the structures of particle states and provides intriguing insights into their working mechanisms. Agreement of the results with the experimental observations is excellent.

The electronic structure of SixGe1−x solid solutions has been calculated using the second-neighbour tight-binding theory in the virtual-crystal approximation. Considering the effects both of changes in the diagonal as well as the nearest-neighbour off-diagonal interaction integrals in the perturbation potential, we have calculated the deep energy levels of the sp-bonded substitutional defects in terms of the well-known κ-space Green function theory. A simple method, incorporating only the Herman-Skillman atomic term values, is also used to estimate the local distortion around the chalcogen (S, Se, Te) impurities in Si and Ge hosts. With the proper choice of relaxation parameter, the impurity levels are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the existing experimental and theoretical data.

Local structure of isolated Si impurity in GaAs and AlAs is studied using a parameter‐free semi‐empirical tight binding method. It is predicted that nearest neighbor As atom around the impurity moves toward SiGa(Al) causing a 6.54% (5.73%) change in GaAs(AlAs) bond length. An estimation of lattice distortion energy 0.02±0.003 eV (0.025±0.003 eV) for GaAs:Si (AlAs:Si) is found in good qualitative agreement with the value obtained by J. C. M. Henning and J. P. M. Ansems [Semicond. Sci. Technol. 2, 1 (1987)] from the photoionization of the DX center in lightly doped Si impurities in Al0.33Ga0.67As. The fits for the observed maxima in the optical cross section and the calculation of the pressure‐dependent thermal barrier energy lend support for the small lattice relaxation models and cast doubt on the validity of those with the large lattice relaxation usually recommended for this class of centers.
