Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we present the first high‐speed video observation of a cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash and its associated downward‐directed Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high‐speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric‐field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud‐to‐ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of −154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma‐ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

Abstract

In this study, focusing on the flood damages in Joso City in Ibaraki Prefecture, we estimated the extent of inundation using multiple SAR satellites and examined their varied results depending on observational bands. We further examined the potential utilization of combined different SAR data for initial responses to disasters. For classification of the inundated areas, a binary classification was used with a threshold of backscatter coefficient and the difference in backscatter coefficient between the usual condition and the situation after the breach. In the extraction of inundation after the breach of the levee, COSMO-SkyMed showed the accuracy of 72.6%, while ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 indicated the accuracy of 66.1%. The extent of inundation were extracted by difference of backscatter coefficient using the data taken by Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 before the breach of the levee, and the comparison analysis results showed that the extent of inundation expanded after the breach of the levee. From the above results, we graded the characteristics of the satellites by their observational bands and spatial resolution.

3. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on the rough surface of a polycrystalline NiFe film with a fine magnetic tip sensitive to a well-defined magnetization component

Abstract

We developed a micrometer-sized magnetic tip integrated onto the write head of a hard disk drive for spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) in the modulated tip magnetization mode. Using SP-STM, we measured a well-defined in-plane spin-component of the tunneling current of the rough surface of a polycrystalline NiFe film. The spin asymmetry of the NiFe film was about 1.3% within the bias voltage range of -3 to 1 V. We obtained the local spin component image of the sample surface, switching the magnetic field of the sample to reverse the sample magnetization during scanning. We also obtained a spin image of the rough surface of a polycrystalline NiFe film evaporated on the recording medium of a hard disk drive.

Abstract

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is an emerging technology being adapted for a wide range of applications. Real-time monitoring is essential to enhance the effectiveness of UAV applications. Sensor networks are networks constructed from various sensor nodes. International standard such as OGC's SOS (Sensor Observation Service) makes it possible to share sensor data with other systems as well as to provide accessibility to globally distributed users. In this paper, we propose a system combining UAV technology and sensor network technology to use an UAV as a mobile node of sensor network so that the sensor data from UAV is published and shared real-time. A UAV can extend the observation range of a sensor network to remote areas where it is usually difficult to access such as disaster area. We constructed a UAV system using remote-controlled helicopter and various sensors such as GPS, gyrocompass, laser range finder, Digital camera and Thermometer. Furthermore, we extended the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) and Sensor Service Grid (SSG) to support mobile sensor nodes. Then, we conducted experiments of flying the helicopter over an area of the interest. During the flight, the system measured environmental data using its sensors and captured images of the ground. The data was sent to a SOS node as the ground station via Wi-Fi which was published using SSG to give real- time access to globally distributed users.

5. Reduction of tsunami inundation by coastal forests in Yogyakarta, Indonesia: a numerical study

Abstract

Coastal forests are known to protect coastal areas from environmental degradation. In this paper, we examined another important role of coastal forests – to mitigate tsunami devastations to coastal areas. Using a two-dimensional numerical model (Harada and Imamura model, 2005), we evaluated the damping effects of a coastal forest to resist tsunami inundation in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In the simulations, we set up a two-km long control forest with a representative topography of the study site and experimented its damping performance sensitivity under various width configurations, e.g. 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 m. The initial tsunami wave was set such that the inundation depth at the front edge of the forest would not exceed 4 m (tree fragility limit). The forest variables such as species, density, DBH, height and canopy size were determined from a typical forest of the site (Casuarina plantation, 4 trees/100 m2, Diameter at Breast Height = 0.20 m). The results showed that coastal forest with 100 m width reduced inundation flux, depth and area by 17.6, 7.0 and 5.7%, respectively. Exponential models were found to describe the relationships between forest width and tsunami inundation transmission. An additional experiment was performed using actual topography and a forest plantation plan with 100 m width for 2.46 km2. In this experiment, the results showed that the plan would reduce inundation flux by 10.1%, while the exponential model estimated it to be 10.6%, close to the numerical model results. It suggests that statistical models of forest width and damping effects are useful tools for plantation planning, as it allows for quicker evaluation of the impact of coastal forest without simulation modeling that requires a lot of data, time and computing power.

Resume But de l’etude La sphincterotomie interne laterale reste la technique standard des fissures anales chroniques, meme si d’autres techniques se sont revelees efficaces. L’incontinence fecale est une complication documentee de la sphincterotomie. Nous decrivons, ici, une technique de sphincterotomie interne posterieure ouverte avec lambeau cutane. Le but de cette etude etait d’analyser les resultats de cette technique chirurgicale. Methodes Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective observationnelle a un bras. La sphincterotomie interne posterieure ouverte + lambeau cutane etait faite pour fissure associee a une stenose anale. La technique comportait une incision posterieure du sphincter interne jusqu’a pouvoir passer 4 doigts dans le canal. L’incision etait refermee en anastomosant la muqueuse a la peau perineale. Ensuite, une incision arciforme etait faite pour creer un lambeau cutane qui etait avance dans le canal anal. Le suivi postoperatoire etait fait par des consultations cliniques et appels telephoniques. L’incontinence anale etait evaluee par le score de Cleveland Clinic Faecal Incontinence (CCFI). Resultats La sphincterotomie interne posterieure ouverte + lambeau cutane etait faite chez 143 patients, dont l’âge moyen etait de 50 ± 16 ans. Les taux de succes et de recidive apres sphincterotomie interne posterieure ouverte + lambeau cutane etaient respectivement de 99 % et 0,7 %, avec un suivi median de 16,3 annees. Un patient a presente une incontinence aux selles liquides 6 mois apres la chirurgie. Le score CCFI postoperatoire moyen etait de 0,5 ± 0,9. Conclusion Cette etude montre que la sphincterotomie interne posterieure ouvert + lambeau cutane est une technique efficace dans la prise en charge des fissures anales avec stenose, grâce a un taux eleve de reussite, et faible de recidives ou complications a type d’incontinence fecale.

Abstract

Broiler chickens eat more feed and grow faster than layer chickens. However, hyperphagia-induced excessive accumulation of body fat in broiler chickens has become a serious problem in the modern poultry industry. Species specificity in terms of the physiological role of appetite-regulating hormones and neuropeptides can make it difficult to understand the mechanisms underlying the central regulation of food intake in chickens. Therefore, although the appetite regulatory system of chickens has been a focus of research in recent decades, the mechanisms underlying the hyperphagia of broiler chickens are not fully understood. Our previous studies demonstrated that peripheral hormones significantly suppress food intake in chicks. These findings suggest that postprandial elevation of peripheral anorexigenic hormones plays important roles in appetite regulation in chickens. This review provides an overview of recent findings on the role of peripheral hormones in the regulation of food intake in chickens and proposes the new insight of avian-species-specific system of peripheral regulation of food intake and promising strategies for reducing body fat mass in broiler chickens.

Abstract

Summary Aim Lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) remains a standard for chronic anal fissure even though other surgical techniques have shown high efficacy. Faecal incontinence is a well-documented complication of LIS. We devised modified open posterior internal sphincterotomy (m-OPIS) with sliding skin graft (SSG), which is a combined procedure of OPIS and anal advancement flap. The aim of this study is to evaluate m-OPIS + SSG. Methods This was a retrospective, observational, single-arm study. m-OPIS + SSG was performed for chronic anal fissure and anal stenosis. m-OPIS involved incision of the internal sphincter muscle at the posterior midline until four fingers could be passed. The incision wound was closed by anastomosis of the anoderm and skin. Then, an arcuate skin incision was created and the skin graft was advanced into the anal canal. Follow-up was conducted by clinical consultation and telephone interview. Faecal continence was assessed by Cleveland Clinic Faecal Incontinence (CCFI) score. Results m-OPIS + SSG was performed in 143 patients. The mean patient age was 50 ± 16 years. The success and overall recurrence rates after m-OPIS + SSG were 99% and 0.7%, respectively, with a median follow-up period of 16.3 years. One patient developed incontinence with liquid stools once during the 6-month period. None of the other patients suffered permanent faecal incontinence postoperatively. The postoperative CCFI score was 0.5 ± 0.9. Conclusions We consider m-OPIS + SSG as one of the efficacious options of procedure for chronic anal fissure and anal stenosis, owing to its high success rate, low recurrence rate and no postoperative complication of serious faecal incontinence.

We tested how a suite of biotic and abiotic factors simultaneously affect life-history patterns in six populations of the livebearing fish Poecilia vivipara inhabiting coastal lagoons in southeastern Brazil, varying greatly in salinity and fish communities. We sampled potential competitors (cyprinodontiform fishes) and piscivores, and we measured nine limnological variables in the wet and dry seasons during 2 years. We found that size at maturity and offspring size were strongly and negatively influenced by the abundance of piscivores, and that reproductive allocation was strongly and positively influenced by variations in resource abundance and temperature among seasons. Effects of salinity on size at maturity, female reproductive investment and offspring size were indirect, via piscivore abundance, highlighting the potential for indirect effects that can be detected only by analysing multiple habitat features simultaneously. This suggests caution in interpreting associations between life histories and salinity in wild populations. Observed patterns generally matched theoretical predictions and prior empirical work, but some predictions were not met. Our results suggest that life histories result from a partly predictable complex combination of direct and indirect effects of habitat features, which can sometimes act antagonistically. Abstract

Introduction Products marketed as dietary supplements for improving sexual performance at times include phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, such as sildenafil and analogues. The ingestion of these dietary supplements is extremely dangerous as these are not evaluated for their efficacy and safety as pharmaceuticals, and their manufacture is not controlled. For this reason, regulatory authorities conduct inspections on these products to prevent the occurrence and spread of health hazards. Tadalafil is one of the PDE5 inhibitors, and its analogues are found as the most major adulterants in sexual products after analogues of sildenafil. Tadalafil has two chiral carbons that are both R configuration, which is important for PDE5 inhibitory activity. To confirm the molecular configuration of the tested compound, it is subject to instrumental analysis such as circular dichroism detection or X-ray crystal structure analysis. Therefore, it takes longer for testing tadalafil than for other compounds that do not require these processes. Meanwhile, in 2020, the product containing 120 times more tadalafil than the normal dosage was detected in Tokyo, making it an urgent issue to remove these dangerous products from the market. This study proposes a simple and rapid method to detect tadalafil with a newly devised detector tube. Objective Development of a detector tube for the rapid screening of tadalafil with simple functioning. Methods Approximately 80 mg of silica gel powder impregnated with sulfuric acid was filled in a glass tube, having a 3-mm inner diameter, to prepare a detector tube. The measuring method of this detector tube is quite simple; first, both tips of the detector tube are cut, then the sample solution is aspirated, and a decision is made by the colour of the detector tube after 5 minutes. It was defined as a positive result when the detector tube turned violet and negative when it showed other colours. First, the reaction of tadalafil and analogues were confirmed using the prepared detector tube. Then, specificity was tested for active pharmaceutical ingredients and common additives. The tube was also tested for the applicability to some commercially available dietary supplements. Results All tested tadalafil and analogues showed positive results in the test. The limit of detection was 5 μg/mL for tadalafil. Except for levomepromazine, results for additives and any pharmaceutical ingredients tested were negative. This tube was able to detect all real samples containing tadalafil and analogues. None of the real samples that did not contain tadalafil and analogues gave false positives. Conclusions The developed detector tube could rapidly detect tadalafil and analogues with high sensitivity in a simple procedure. It was suggested that false-positive results could occur only if levomepromazine was included in the sample. Other than that, no significant interference that leads to false results was observed in tested common adulterants and additives of supplements. Furthermore, the tube was able to detect tadalafil and analogues in all tested real samples. Accordingly, the proposed test method has the potential for the use of preliminary screening of tadalafil.

Abstract

Background & aims: Genome-wide association studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have failed to find X chromosome (chrX) variants associated with the disease. Here, we specifically explore the chrX contribution to PBC, a sexually dimorphic complex autoimmune disease. Methods: We performed a chrX-wide association study, including genotype data from 5 genome-wide association studies (from Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan; 5244 case patients and 11,875 control individuals). Results: Single-marker association analyses found approximately 100 loci displaying P < 5 × 10-4, with the most significant being a signal within the OTUD5 gene (rs3027490; P = 4.80 × 10-6; odds ratio [OR], 1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.028-1.88; Japanese cohort). Although the transethnic meta-analysis evidenced only a suggestive signal (rs2239452, mapping within the PIM2 gene; OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09-1.26; P = 9.93 × 10-8), the population-specific meta-analysis showed a genome-wide significant locus in East Asian individuals pointing to the same region (rs7059064, mapping within the GRIPAP1 gene; P = 6.2 × 10-9; OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.21-1.46). Indeed, rs7059064 tags a unique linkage disequilibrium block including 7 genes: TIMM17B, PQBP1, PIM2, SLC35A2, OTUD5, KCND1, and GRIPAP1, as well as a superenhancer (GH0XJ048933 within OTUD5) targeting all these genes. GH0XJ048933 is also predicted to target FOXP3, the main T-regulatory cell lineage specification factor. Consistently, OTUD5 and FOXP3 RNA levels were up-regulated in PBC case patients (1.75- and 1.64-fold, respectively). Conclusions: This work represents the first comprehensive study, to our knowledge, of the chrX contribution to the genetics of an autoimmune liver disease and shows a novel PBC-related genome-wide significant locus.

Abstract

We present the first observation by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD) of the effect of thunderstorms on the development of cosmic ray single count rate intensity over a 700 km$^{2}$ area. Observations of variations in the secondary low-energy cosmic ray counting rate, using the TASD, allow us to study the electric field inside thunderstorms, on a large scale, as it progresses on top of the 700 km$^{2}$ detector, without dealing with the limitation of narrow exposure in time and space using balloons and aircraft detectors. In this work, variations in the cosmic ray intensity (single count rate) using the TASD, were studied and found to be on average at the $\sim(0.5-1)\%$ and up to 2\% level. These observations were found to be both in excess and in deficit. They were also found to be correlated with lightning in addition to thunderstorms. These variations lasted for tens of minutes; their footprint on the ground ranged from 6 to 24 km in diameter and moved in the same direction as the thunderstorm. With the use of simple electric field models inside the cloud and between cloud to ground, the observed variations in the cosmic ray single count rate were recreated using CORSIKA simulations. Depending on the electric field model used and the direction of the electric field in that model, the electric field magnitude that reproduces the observed low-energy cosmic ray single count rate variations was found to be approximately between 0.2-0.4 GV. This in turn allows us to get a reasonable insight on the electric field and its effect on cosmic ray air showers inside thunderstorms.

Abstract

In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP., Comment: Typo fixed and reference added. Abstract

Motivated by the detection of a significant dipole structure in the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays above 8 EeV reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory (Auger), we search for a large-scale anisotropy using data collected with the surface detector array of the Telescope Array Experiment (TA). With 11 years of TA data, a dipole structure in a projection of the right ascension is fitted with an amplitude of 3.3+- 1.9% and a phase of 131 +- 33 degrees. The corresponding 99% confidence-level upper limit on the amplitude is 7.3%. Abstract

A baseline TiAl-containing ALD electrode is established, with properties in line with reported workfunction (WF) materials for scaled RMG nFETs, values below 4.6eV requiring a 25A layer. Furthermore, a novel ALD metal-compound material, MX, is shown to enable at least 10A further scaling of the electrode stack due to its superior scavenging power. It can be finely tuned by the film thickness, allowing for a remarkable 20-30meV WF delta per ALD cycle over a minimum 600meV range. The wet etchability of the electrodes makes multi-Vt and dual-WF integration possible. MX does not degrade transfer characteristics and reliability of RMG FinFETs, while the thinner nWF electrode enables reduced gate resistance, as verified down to 20nm metal gate lengths. For the first time, taking advantage of the MX compound scavenging power to control oxygen filaments, we demonstrate an all-ALD HfO 2 -based ReRAM. Forming voltages match those achieved by optimized PVD contacts, while scaling the active electrode thickness by a factor of 4x, down to 5nm. Conformality of the layers enables vertical-ReRAM architectures with reduced line resistance. We conclude the developed electrode can facilitate both logic scaling beyond the 10nm node, and 3D memory technology.

Abstract

Bursts of gamma ray showers have been observed in coincidence with downward propagating negative leaders in lightning flashes by the Telescope Array Surface Detector (TASD). The TASD is a 700~square kilometer cosmic ray observatory located in southwestern Utah, U.S.A. In data collected between 2014 and 2016, correlated observations showing the structure and temporal development of three shower-producing flashes were obtained with a 3D lightning mapping array, and electric field change measurements were obtained for an additional seven flashes, in both cases co-located with the TASD. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) information was also used throughout. The showers arrived in a sequence of 2--5 short-duration ($\le$10~$\mu$s) bursts over time intervals of several hundred microseconds, and originated at an altitude of $\simeq$3--5 kilometers above ground level during the first 1--2 ms of downward negative leader breakdown at the beginning of cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. The shower footprints, associated waveforms and the effect of atmospheric propagation indicate that the showers consist primarily of downward-beamed gamma radiation. This has been supported by GEANT simulation studies, which indicate primary source fluxes of $\simeq$$10^{12}$--$10^{14}$ photons for $16^{\circ}$ half-angle beams. We conclude that the showers are terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), similar to those observed by satellites, but that the ground-based observations are more representative of the temporal source activity and are also more sensitive than satellite observations, which detect only the most powerful TGFs.

Abstract

Resistant bacterial infections are a major public health problem worldwide, which entails the need to search for new therapeutic agents. In this context, lichens stand out, provided that they are producers of structurally diverse compounds that have attractive biological properties, including antimicrobial activity. Thus, extracts of 12 lichen species were prepared and their potential to inhibit the growth of 5 bacterial strains was evaluated in this work. The chemical compositions of these extracts were examined using TLC and microcrystallization, being the identity of the active compounds in each extract attributed based on the bioautography technique. The most active extracts (and their identified active compounds) were from Cladonia borealis (usnic, barbatic and 4-O-demethylbarbatic acids), Cladina confusa (usnic and perlatolic acids), Stereocaulom ramulosum (atranorin, perlatolic and anziaic acids) and Canoparmelia cryptochlorophaea (cryptochlorophaeic and caperatic acids), with MICs ranging from 7.8 to 31.25 μg/mL, including for resistant clinical strains. MIC values ​​were also obtained for substances isolated from lichens for comparison purposes. A group of four extracts containing usnic acid was analyzed by 1H NMR in order to correlate relative proportion of major metabolites and extracts activity. The less active extracts in this group, in fact, presented low proportion of usnic acid.

Abstract

The Telescope Array (TA) experiment is designed to detect air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays. The TA ground Surface particle Detector (TASD) observed several short-time bursts of air shower like events. These bursts are not likely due to chance coincidence between single shower events. The expectation of chance coincidence is less than 10 − 4 for five-year's observation. We checked the correlation between these bursts of events and lightning data, and found evidence for correlations in timing and position. Some features of the burst events are similar to those of a normal cosmic ray air shower, and some are not. On this paper, we report the observed bursts of air shower like events and their correlation with lightning.

Abstract

TARA (Telescope Array Radar) is a cosmic ray radar detection experiment colocated with Telescope Array, the conventional surface scintillation detector (SD) and fluorescence telescope detector (FD) near Delta, Utah, U.S.A. The TARA detector combines a 40 kW, 54.1 MHz VHF transmitter and high-gain transmitting antenna which broadcasts the radar carrier over the SD array and within the FD field of view, towards a 250 MS/s DAQ receiver. TARA has been collecting data since 2013 with the primary goal of observing the radar signatures of extensive air showers (EAS). Simulations indicate that echoes are expected to be short in duration (~10 microseconds) and exhibit rapidly changing frequency, with rates on the order of 1 MHz/microsecond. The EAS radar cross-section (RCS) is currently unknown although it is the subject of over 70 years of speculation. A novel signal search technique is described in which the expected radar echo of a particular air shower is used as a matched filter template and compared to waveforms obtained by triggering the radar DAQ using the Telescope Array fluorescence detector. No evidence for the scattering of radio frequency radiation by EAS is obtained to date. Abstract

Cosmic rays in the energy range $10^{18.0}$ - $10^{18.5}$ eV are thought to have a light, probably protonic, composition. To study their origin one can search for anisotropy in their arrival directions. Extragalactic cosmic rays should be isotropic, but galactic cosmic rays of this type should be seen mostly along the galactic plane, and there should be a shortage of events coming from directions near the galactic anticenter. This is due to the fact that, under the influence of the galactic magnetic field, the transition from ballistic to diffusive behavior is well advanced, and this qualitative picture persists over the whole energy range. Guided by models of the galactic magnetic field that indicate that the enhancement along the galactic plane should have a standard deviation of about 20$^\circ$ in galactic latitude, and the deficit in the galactic anticenter direction should have a standard deviation of about 50$^\circ$ in galactic longitude, we use the data of the Telescope Array surface detector in $10^{18.0}$ to $10^{18.5}$ eV energy range to search for these effects. The data are isotropic. Neither an enhancement along the galactic plane nor a deficit in the galactic anticenter direction is found. Using these data we place an upper limit on the fraction of EeV cosmic rays of galactic origin at 1.3% at 95% confidence level.

Abstract

Objectives As new medical technology develops, medical costs increase. When high medical costs affect the patient as a toxicity, it is called financial toxicity (FT). In Japan, all patients are covered by the public health insurance system, which may alleviate FT. However, previous research using the Japanese version of the ‘‘‘‘‘COmprehensive Score for financial Toxicity (COST)’’’’’ tool, whose score quantifies FT, showed that Japanese patients with cancer had FT. Our objective is to analyze its internal validity and the relationship between the COST score and patient information particularly for patients with ovarian, cervical, or endometrial cancer during chemotherapy. Furthermore, this study aims to clarify the correlation between COST and QOL scores. Methods We will enroll 147 patients, including 49 patients each with ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancers, from April 2019 to April 2020. Each patient will have been receiving chemotherapy for more than 2 months at enrollment. Each participant will answer the COST tool, EORTC-QLQ-C30, OV28/CX24/EN24, and EQ-5D-5L at baseline and at the end of chemotherapy. The patients will also complete a questionnaire about employment, assets, income, private insurance, medical payments in the last 2 months, presence of children or family members who need a caregiver, and consultation for medical payment before chemotherapy. Results This research will clarify the characteristics and longitudinal changes in the COST score in gynecologic cancer patients. The impact of FT on the clinical situation will also be determined. Conclusions We expect to find that the COST score can be used prospectively to improve QOL in patients with gynecologic cancer.

Abstract

To develop a detector with an effective area large enough to observe an extensive air shower, we studied a method of detecting radio waves generated via the transition radiation process by charged particles in an air shower. Characteristics of the radio waves were investigated using beam accelerators and radio antennas . When about 430x10^9 electrons with a kinetic energy of 4.7 MeV crossed a titanium film into the air, the radio pulse emitted was measured using a standard dipole antenna with a bandwidth of 800 - 880 MHz. The measured pulse height at a position 1.2 m away from the source and at an angle of 5 degree from the beam axis was approximately 670 mV. It was found that the electric field strength had large angular dependence and that the polarization property was roughly consistent with the theoretical value.

Abstract

We present an upper limit on the flux of ultra-high-energy down-going neutrinos for $E > 10^{18}\ \mbox{eV}$ derived with the nine years of data collected by the Telescope Array surface detector (05-11-2008 -- 05-10-2017). The method is based on the multivariate analysis technique, so-called Boosted Decision Trees (BDT). Abstract

The surface detector (SD) of the Telescope Array (TA) experiment allows one to indirectly detect photons with energies of order $10^{18}$ eV and higher and to separate photons from the cosmic-ray background. In this paper we present the results of a blind search for point sources of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons in the Northern sky using the TA SD data. The photon-induced extensive air showers (EAS) are separated from the hadron-induced EAS background by means of a multivariate classifier based upon 16 parameters that characterize the air shower events. No significant evidence for the photon point sources is found. The upper limits are set on the flux of photons from each particular direction in the sky within the TA field of view, according to the experiment's angular resolution for photons. Average 95% C.L. upper limits for the point-source flux of photons with energies greater than $10^{18}$, $10^{18.5}$, $10^{19}$, $10^{19.5}$ and $10^{20}$ eV are $0.094$, $0.029$, $0.010$, $0.0073$ and $0.0058$ km$^{-2}$yr$^{-1}$ respectively. For the energies higher than $10^{18.5}$ eV, the photon point-source limits are set for the first time. Abstract

Xenarthrans -anteaters, sloths, and armadillos- have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. Have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become. Abstract

We report on a measurement of the cosmic ray composition by the Telescope Array Low-Energy Extension (TALE) air fluorescence detector (FD). By making use of the Cherenkov light signal in addition to air fluorescence light from cosmic ray (CR) induced extensive air showers, the TALE FD can measure the properties of the cosmic rays with energies as low as $\sim 2$ PeV and exceeding 1 EeV. In this paper, we present results on the measurement of $X_{\rm max}$ distributions of showers observed over this energy range. Data collected over a period of $\sim 4$ years was analyzed for this study. The resulting $X_{\rm max}$ distributions are compared to the Monte Carlo (MC) simulated data distributions for primary cosmic rays with varying composition and a 4-component fit is performed. The comparison and fit are performed for energy bins, of width 0.1 or 0.2 in $\log_{10} (E/{\rm eV})$, spanning the full range of the measured energies. We also examine the mean $X_{\rm max}$ value as a function of energy for cosmic rays with energies greater than $10^{15.8}$ eV. Below $10^{17.3}$ eV, the slope of the mean $X_{\rm max}$ as a function of energy (the elongation rate) for the data is significantly smaller than that of all elements in the models, indicating that the composition is becoming heavier with energy in this energy range. This is consistent with a rigidity-dependent cutoff of events from galactic sources. Finally, an increase in the $X_{\rm max}$ elongation rate is observed at energies just above $10^{17}$ eV indicating another change in the cosmic rays composition., 20 pages, 22 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is an aggressive disease marked by frequent recurrence and metastasis and stagnant survival rates. To enhance molecular knowledge of HNSCC and define a non-coding RNA (ncRNA) landscape of the disease, we profiled the transcriptome-wide dysregulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), microRNA (miRNA), and PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA) using RNA-sequencing data from 422 HNSCC patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). 307 non-coding transcripts differentially expressed in HNSCC were significantly correlated with patient survival, and associated with mutations in TP53, CDKN2A, CASP8, PRDM9, and FBXW7 and copy number variations in chromosomes 3, 5, 7, and 18. We also observed widespread ncRNA correlation to concurrent TP53 and chromosome 3p loss, a compelling predictor of poor prognosis in HNSCCs. Three selected ncRNAs were additionally associated with tumor stage, HPV status, and other clinical characteristics, and modulation of their expression in vitro reveals differential regulation of genes involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition and apoptotic response. This comprehensive characterization of the HNSCC non-coding transcriptome introduces new layers of understanding for the disease, and nominates a novel panel of transcripts with potential utility as prognostic markers or therapeutic targets.

Abstract

Objective We report a case of the clinical course and pathologic findings for a kidney transplant recipient with plasma cell–rich rejection (PCRR) accompanied by antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR). Methods A 29-year-old man with end-stage renal disease caused by lupus nephritis received an ABO-compatible living kidney transplant. Results Eighteen months after transplantation, the patient presented with proteinuria and increased serum creatinine. An episode biopsy revealed severe tubulointerstitial infiltration with plasma cells accompanied by peritubular capillaritis and positive findings on immunofluorescent C4d staining. Donor-specific antibodies were positive for DR52, and the patient was subsequently diagnosed with PCRR accompanied by ABMR. Treatment was initiated with high-dose steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, gusperimus hydrochloride, muronmonab antibody CD3, and rituximab. However, ABMR persisted and allograft failure developed 20 months after onset. Conclusions We argue that PCRR accompanied by ABMR is a subtype of PCRR that can progress to allograft failure owing to persistent ABMR.

Abstract

Evidence for a large-scale supergalactic cosmic-ray multiplet (arrival directions correlated with energy) structure is reported for ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) energies above 1019 eV using 7 years of data from the Telescope Array (TA) surface detector and updated to 10 years. Previous energy–position correlation studies have made assumptions regarding magnetic field shapes and strength, and UHECR composition. Here the assumption tested is that, because the supergalactic plane is a fit to the average matter density of the local large-scale structure, UHECR sources and intervening extragalactic magnetic fields are correlated with this plane. This supergalactic deflection hypothesis is tested by the entire field-of-view (FOV) behavior of the strength of intermediate-scale energy–angle correlations. These multiplets are measured in spherical cap section bins (wedges) of the FOV to account for coherent and random magnetic fields. The structure found is consistent with supergalactic deflection, the previously published energy spectrum anisotropy results of the TA (the Hotspot and Coldspot), and toy-model simulations of a supergalactic magnetic sheet. The seven year data posttrial significance of this supergalactic structure of multiplets appearing by chance, on an isotropic sky, is found by Monte Carlo simulation to be 4.2σ. The 10 years of data posttrial significance is 4.1σ. Furthermore, the starburst galaxy M82 is shown to be a possible source of the TA Hotspot, and an estimate of the supergalactic magnetic field using UHECR measurements is presented.

Abstract

Aim Rectal prolapse (RP) is usually associated with elderly women and is well recognized as having a detrimental effect on quality of life. A number of surgical procedures for RP are available, but morbidity and mortality are substantial. The Gant-Miwa-Thiersch procedure (GMT) has been frequently used for RP in Japan. However, as GMT has a high recurrence rate it is not widely used elsewhere. The aim of this study was to evaluate a modified version of GMT (mGMT) in comparison with other procedures. Method mGMT was performed under spinal or local anaesthesia in 187 patients with RP. No normal mucosa was left between the tags and lateral wounds were created in the Thiersch procedure. Morbidity, mortality and recurrence rates were recorded. Results No serious postoperative complications and no operative deaths occurred after mGMT. Eight per cent of patients suffered from infection of the strings. The overall recurrence rate after mGMT was 7.5% with a median follow-up period of 13.8 years. Conclusion On the basis of these results, we consider that mGMT has a number of advantages: it is minimally invasive, does not require general anaesthesia, is technically simple to perform and is associated with satisfactory outcomes and low morbidity. mGMT should be considered an option for the treatment of RP in elderly patients.

Abstract

The Pierre Auger Collaboration (Auger) recently reported a correlation between the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energies above 39 EeV and the flux pattern of 23 nearby starburst galaxies (SBGs). In this Letter, we tested the same hypothesis using cosmic rays detected by the Telescope Array experiment (TA) in the 9-year period from May 2008 to May 2017. Unlike the Auger analysis, we did not optimize the parameter values but kept them fixed to the best-fit values found by Auger, namely 9.7% for the anisotropic fraction of cosmic rays assumed to originate from the SBGs in the list and 12.9{\deg} for the angular scale of the correlations. The energy threshold we adopted is 43 EeV, corresponding to 39 EeV in Auger when taking into account the energy-scale difference between two experiments. We find that the TA data is compatible with isotropy to within 1.1{\sigma} and with the Auger result to within 1.4{\sigma}, meaning that it is not capable to discriminate between these two hypotheses., Comment: More accurate title, fixed an inconsistency in the declination range used, with a few figures slightly changing as a result, other minor revisions

Abstract

In a series of previous experiments, a swelling structure, which was fabricated by ion-beam induced expansion effect, was observed on crystal materials and the height changes depending on irradiation condition. In case of SiC crystal, which is one of hopeful ultra-hard materials, the expansion rate is relatively large 10–20%. This result indicates the possibility of the expansion effect as a fabrication process for three-dimensional structures on SiC surface. In the present research, fabrication of swelling structure on 6H-SiC substrate, whose lateral size is in micro-meter scale, has been tried by irradiating Ar beams through a stencil mask.

Abstract

A series of experimental studies on ion-beam-induced swelling of silicon carbide (SiC), a promising ultra-hard materials, have shown that the swelling height varies with irradiation parameters, such as ion type, fluence, and beam energy. In order to confirm the feasibility of the swelling effect as a fabrication process for 3D micro-nanostructures, the effect of beam energy on swelling of the SiC substrate and a two-step irradiation method were investigated by using Ar beams in charge states of 1+, 4+, and 7+. The swelling height increases linearly with the fluence of the Ar beam up to n ≈ 5 × 1015/cm2. In addition, the swelling height obtained by using Ar7+ ions is enhanced by about fivefold as compared with that for Ar1+. Multi-step swelling structures were fabricated through a two-step irradiation. A different irradiation pattern was used in each step, and the additivity of swelling height was confirmed. To understand the swelling behavior, the effect of irradiation is characterized by SRIM-2013 and the Rutherford backscattering-channeling technique.

Abstract

One of the uncertainties in interpretation of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data comes from the hadronic interaction models used for air shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The number of muons observed at the ground from UHECR-induced air showers is expected to depend upon the hadronic interaction model. One may therefore test the hadronic interaction models by comparing the measured number of muons with the MC prediction. In this paper, we present the results of studies of muon densities in UHE extensive air showers obtained by analyzing the signal of surface detector stations which should have high $\it{muon \, purity}$. The muon purity of a station will depend on both the inclination of the shower and the relative position of the station. In 7 years' data from the Telescope Array experiment, we find that the number of particles observed for signals with an expected muon purity of $\sim$65% at a lateral distance of 2000 m from the shower core is $1.72 \pm 0.10{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.37 {\rm (syst.)}$ times larger than the MC prediction value using the QGSJET II-03 model for proton-induced showers. A similar effect is also seen in comparisons with other hadronic models such as QGSJET II-04, which shows a $1.67 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.36$ excess. We also studied the dependence of these excesses on lateral distances and found a slower decrease of the lateral distribution of muons in the data as compared to the MC, causing larger discrepancy at larger lateral distances.
