1) to compare the QIAreachQIAreach QFT measures the level of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in plasma specimens from blood stimulated by ESAT-6 and CFP-10 peptides in one blood collection tube (equivalent to the TB2 tube of the QFT-Plus). QIAreach QFT was applied to plasma samples from 41 patients with pulmonary TB and from 42 healthy or low-TB-risk individuals.Sensitivity and specificity of QIAreach QFT vs. QFT-Plus were 100% (41/41) and 97.6% (41/42), respectively; overall concordance was 98.8% (82/83). All samples were measured within 20 min. The time to result of each sample was significantly correlated with IFN-γ level with a natural logarithmic scale (r = -0.913, p 0.001). Seven cases in the active TB group were immunocompromised (CD4200/μL) and tested positive by QIAreach QFT.QIAreach QFT provides an objective readout with a minimum blood sample volume (1 mL/subject), potentially being a useful point-of-care screening test for TB infection in high-TB-burden, low-resource countries and for immunocompromised patients.

Open biomass burning is a significant source of primary air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and non-methane organic gases (NMOG). However, the physical and chemical atmospheric processing of these emissions during transport is poorly understood. Atmospheric transformations of biomass burning emissions have been investigated in environmental chambers, but there have been limited opportunities to investigate these transformations in the atmosphere. In this study, we deployed a suite of real-time instrumentation on a Twin Otter aircraft to sample smoke from prescribed fires in South Carolina, conducting measurements at both the source and downwind to characterize smoke evolution with atmospheric aging. Organic aerosol (OA) within the smoke plumes was quantified using an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS); refractory black carbon (rBC) was quantified using a single-particle soot photometer, and carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were measured using a cavity ring-down spectrometer. During the two fires for which we were able to obtain aerosol aging data, normalized excess mixing ratios and "export factors" of conserved species (rBC, CO, CO2) suggested that changes in emissions at the source did not account for most of the differences observed in samples of increasing age. An investigation of AMS mass fragments indicated that the in-plume fractional contribution (fm/z) to OA of the primary fragment (m/z 60) decreased downwind, while the fractional contribution of the secondary fragment (m/z 44) increased. Increases in f44 are typically interpreted as indicating chemical aging of OA. Likewise, we observed an increase in the O : C elemental ratio downwind, which is usually associated with aerosol aging. However, the rapid mixing of these plumes into the background air suggests that these chemical transformations may be attributable to the different volatilities of the compounds that fragment to these m/z in the AMS. The gas–particle partitioning behavior of the bulk OA observed during the study was consistent with the predictions from a parameterization developed for open biomass burning emissions in the laboratory. Furthermore, we observed no statistically significant increase in total organic mass with atmospheric transport. Hence, our results suggest that dilution-driven evaporation likely dominated over the chemical production of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) within our smoke plumes, presumably due to the fast dilution and limited aging times (< ~ 5 h) that we could sample.

Normalized excess mixing ratios (NEMRs), also known as enhancement ratios, are a common way to characterize plumes of pollution in atmospheric research. As single-source pollutant plumes disperse in the atmosphere, they are diluted by mixing with the adjacent background air. Changes in the composition of this background air can cause large changes to the NEMR that is subsequently measured by remote-sensing, airborne, or ground-based instruments. This scenario is common when boundary layer plumes enter the free troposphere and could also impact long-range transport or plumes near the top of the troposphere. We provide a context for these issues and an example showing that neglect of this effect could lead to serious errors in data interpretation.

The Fire INventory from NCAR version 1.0 (FINNv1) provides daily, 1 km resolution, global estimates of the trace gas and particle emissions from open burning of biomass, which includes wildfire, agricultural fires, and prescribed burning and does not include biofuel use and trash burning. Emission factors used in the calculations have been updated with recent data, particularly for the non-methane organic compounds (NMOC). The resulting global annual NMOC emission estimates are as much as a factor of 5 greater than some prior estimates. Chemical speciation profiles, necessary to allocate the total NMOC emission estimates to lumped species for use by chemical transport models, are provided for three widely used chemical mechanisms: SAPRC99, GEOS-CHEM, and MOZART-4. Using these profiles, FINNv1 also provides global estimates of key organic compounds, including formaldehyde and methanol. Uncertainties in the emissions estimates arise from several of the method steps. The use of fire hot spots, assumed area burned, land cover maps, biomass consumption estimates, and emission factors all introduce error into the model estimates. The uncertainty in the FINNv1 emission estimates are about a factor of two; but, the global estimates agree reasonably well with other global inventories of biomass burning emissions for CO, CO2, and other species with less variable emission factors. FINNv1 emission estimates have been developed specifically for modeling atmospheric chemistry and air quality in a consistent framework at scales from local to global. The product is unique because of the high temporal and spatial resolution, global coverage, and the number of species estimated. FINNv1 can be used for both hindcast and forecast or near-real time model applications and the results are being critically evaluated with models and observations whenever possible.

We have developed downsizing a piston-cylinder clamp-cell to measure a specific heat under pressure using a commercial Differential Scanning Calorimeter (Shimadzu DSC-60 plus). The downsized cell with a diameter of 6.0 mm and a height of 5.0 mm has been achieved by a simplification of the cell design and using a high-yield-strength alloy of β-titanium (KOBELCO, KS15-5-3). The cell allows us to achieve pressures of 0.7 GPa at room temperature as our designed value. As a demonstration of the cell, we have measured the specific heat anomaly due to the first-order transition at around 357 K in Ca2RuO4. The pressure variation of the transition temperature indicates that our cell allows us to achieve pressure of ~0.3 GPa. Moreover, we have estimated that a heat capacity of ~0.6 mJ/K is fully possible to measure within β-Titanium cell as absolute accuracy.

This article shows the quantitative evaluation of the residual grit on a blasted substrate, and the removability of the residual grit is examined. Carbon steel plates were blasted by white alumina grit with mean diameters of 338 to 1106 µm. The velocity and the number of grit particles were measured during blasting. The residual grit was removed from a substrate surface by the dissolution of the blasted substrate surface. A mixed acid solution was used as the dissolution solution. The residual grit weight was 7 to 17 g/m2. The amount of the residual grit and the penetration depth of the embedded grit increased with increasing grit size. The penetration depth was 5 to 9% of the mean diameter of the grit. The residual grit weight and the penetration depth increased with the increase of the momentum of the grit particle.

Within minutes after emission, rapid, complex photochemistry within a biomass burning smoke plume can cause large changes in the concentrations of ozone (O3) and organic aerosol (OA). Being able to understand and simulate this rapid chemical evolution under a wide variety of conditions is a critical part of forecasting the impact of these fires on air quality, atmospheric composition, and climate. Here we use version 2.1 of the Aerosol Simulation Program (ASP) to simulate the evolution of O3 and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) within a young biomass burning smoke plume from the Williams prescribed burn in chaparral, which was sampled over California in November 2009. We demonstrate the use of a method for simultaneously accounting for the impact of the unidentified semi-volatile to extremely low volatility organic compounds (here collectively called "SVOCs") on the formation of OA (using the Volatility Basis Set) and O3 (using the concept of mechanistic reactivity). We show that this method can successfully simulate the observations of O3, OA, PAN, NOx, and C2H4 to within measurement uncertainty using reasonable assumptions about the chemistry of the unidentified SVOCs. These assumptions were: (1) a~reaction rate constant with OH of ~10−11cm3s−1, (2) a significant fraction (~50%) of the RO2 + NO reaction resulted in fragmentation, rather than functionalization, of the parent SVOC, (3) ~1.1 molecules of O3 were formed for every molecule of SVOC that reacted, (4) ~60% of the OH that reacted with the unidentified SVOCs was regenerated as HO2, and (5) that ~50% of the NO that reacted with the SVOC peroxy radicals was lost, presumably to organic nitrate formation. Additional evidence for the fragmentation pathway is provided by the observed rate of formation of acetic acid, which is consistent with our assumed fragmentation rate. This method could provide a way for classifying different smoke plume observations in terms of the average chemistry of their SVOCs, and could be used to study how the chemistry of these compounds (and the O3 and OA they form) varies between plumes.

This analysis compared medication attitudes and reasons for nonadherence in three distinct groups of patients with serious mental illness (SMI). Cohort 1 had 43 patients with bipolar disorder (BD) treated in a community mental health setting, cohort 2 had 43 patients with BD taking an atypical antipsychotic and treated in an academic medical center, and cohort 3 had 30 patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who had been homeless in the last year. Standardized attitudinal scales found generally negative attitudes toward medication and limited illness insight. Although the three cohorts differed with regard to severity of symptoms, age of onset, education, baseline adherence, and race, the groups had similar medication attitudes before and after treatment. Despite group differences in demographic and clinical variables, our analyses found more similarities than differences in medication attitudes among these three discrete groups of poorly adherent, symptomatic patients with SMI. The common attitudinal characteristics have implications for delivery of health care services that can enhance treatment adherence in high-risk SMI patients.

Many factors play a role in tumour angiogenesis. We observed growing tumour vessels in vivo to study the relationship between blood flow and vascular enlargement. Mammary adenocarcinoma was implanted into Fisher-344 rat with dorsal skin-fold transparent chambers. Vascular growth was observed and recorded on videotape through a microscope for 6 h. Vascular networks were photographed and traced every 30 min to identify changes over time. Tumour sections were stained with Masson's trichrome and anti-Factor VIII-related antigen. Tumour growth was rapid enough for differences to be seen each hour. Vessels with a high blood flow showed an increase in diameter within a few hours and new branches formed from these vessels. In contrast, vessels without an increase in blood flow showed no change in diameter. Vessels within the interstitium surrounding the tumour were lined by endothelium that was positive for anti-Factor VIII-related antigen staining. Vessels in the tumour had extremely rare endothelial cells detectable by Masson's trichrome or anti-Factor VIII-related antigen staining. In conclusion, increased blood flow may cause vascular enlargement and some primitive vessels seem to lack endothelium. 1999 Cancer Research Campaign

S*c相を示す当該ポリマーは強誘電液晶性共役系高分子になりうると期待される.

Structures, magnetic properties and read/write properties were studied for low-temperature-growth CoCrPt/Cr magnetic recording media, of which CoCrPt films were sputter-deposited under various Ar pressures. Increase of Ar pressure causes both isolation enhancement and size decrease of CoCrPt grains, which are epitaxially grown on Cr grains. Coercivity increases as Ar pressure increases upto 20–30 mTorr. With an increase of Ar pressure, fluctuation field increases more rapidly than the case when the magnetic film thickness is decreased. Consequently, an increase of Ar pressure for sputter deposition significantly decreases medium noise with a slight decrease of output signal. The highest signal-to-noise ratio of 26.4 dB for 75 kFCI recording was obtained with the Ar pressure of 30 mTorr. This fabrication technique, which requires neither a thick Cr underlayer nor a Cr underlayer deposited under high Ar pressure, is especially suitable for the media with plastic substrates.

Conditional mutant mice equipped with heterologous recombination systems (Cre/lox or Flp/frt) are promising for studying tissue-specific gene function and for designing better models of human diseases. The utility of these mice depends on the cell target specificity, on the efficiency and on the control over timing of gene (in)activation. We have explored the utility of adenoviral vectors and transgenic mice expressing Cre under the control of tissue-specific promoters to achieve Cre/lox-mediated somatic recombination of the LacZ reporter gene, using a newly generated flox LacZ mouse strain. When adeno Cre viruses were administered via different routes, recombination and expression of LacZ was detected in a wide range of tissues. Whereas in liverbeta-galactosidase activity was quickly lost by turnover of expressing cells, even though the recombined allele was retained,beta-galactosidase in other tissues persisted for many months. Our data indicate that the flox LacZ transgenic line can be utilized effectively to monitor the level and functionality of Cre protein produced upon infection with adeno Cre virus or upon crossbreeding with different Cre transgenic lines.

In Chinese hamster ovary cells stably expressing the cloned human cholecystokinin (CCK)B/ gastrin receptor, cholecystokinin octapeptide (CCK-8) evoked increases in [Ca2+]i monitored by digitized video imaging of fura-2 fluorescence ratios. At concentrations around 10 pM, CCK-8 elicited [Ca2+]i oscillations, which were blocked by elimination of extracellular Ca2+, by a phospholipase C inhibitor, U-73122, by a protein kinase C inhibitor, H7, as well as by phospholipase A2 (PLA2) inhibitors, ONO-RS-082 and aristolochic acid. At higher concentrations, CCK-8 induced a single biphasic [Ca2+]i rise consisting of a large peak followed by a lower sustained plateau, while the response turned into [Ca2+]i oscillation when the extracellular Ca2+ was eliminated or a PLA2 inhibitor was included. CCK-8 stimulated the release of arachidonic acid, and this was inhibited by aristolochic acid. Arachidonic acid caused an increase in [Ca2+]i which was dependent upon extracellular Ca2+. These results suggest that the activation of PLA2 might be involved, at least in part, in the Ca2+ influx that maintains the sustained plateau phase of [Ca2+]i as well as the [Ca2+]i oscillation when CCKB receptors are stimulated.

Objectives: Project RC-1649, “Advanced Chemical Measurement of Smoke from DoD-prescribed Burns” was undertaken to use advanced instrumental techniques to study in detail the particulate and vapor-phase chemical composition of the smoke that results from prescribed fires used as a land management tool on DoD bases, particularly bases in the southeastern U.S. The statement of need (SON) called for “(1) improving characterization of fuel consumption” and “(2) improving characterization of air emissions under both flaming and smoldering conditions with respect to volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and reactive gases.” The measurements and fuels were from several bases throughout the southeast (Camp Lejeune, Ft. Benning, and Ft. Jackson) and were carried out in collaboration and conjunction with projects 1647 (models) and 1648 (particulates, SW bases). Technical Approach: We used an approach that featured developing techniques for measuring biomass burning emission species in both the laboratory and field and developing infrared (IR) spectroscopy in particular. Using IR spectroscopy and other methods, we developed emission factors (EF, g of effluent per kg of fuel burned) for dozens of chemical species for several common southeastern fuel types. The major measurement campaigns were laboratory studies at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory (FSL) as well as fieldmore » campaigns at Camp Lejeune, NC, Ft. Jackson, SC, and in conjunction with 1648 at Vandenberg AFB, and Ft. Huachuca. Comparisons and fusions of laboratory and field data were also carried out, using laboratory fuels from the same bases. Results: The project enabled new technologies and furthered basic science, mostly in the area of infrared spectroscopy, a broadband method well suited to biomass burn studies. Advances in hardware, software and supporting reference data realized a nearly 20x improvement in sensitivity and now provide quantitative IR spectra for potential detection of ~60 new species and actual field quantification of several new species such as nitrous acid, glycolaldehyde, α-/β-pinene and D-limonene. The new reference data also permit calculation of the global warming potential (GWP) of the greenhouse gases by enabling 1) detection of their ambient concentrations, and 2) quantifying their ability to absorb IR radiation.« less

Glycolaldehyde (GA, 2-hydroxyethanal, C2H4O2) is a semivolatile molecule of atmospheric importance, recently proposed as a precursor in the formation of aqueous-phase secondary organic aerosol (SOA). There are few methods to measure GA vapor, but infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully. Using vetted protocols we have completed the first assignment of all fundamental vibrational modes and also derived quantitative IR absorption band strengths using both neat and pressure-broadened GA vapor. Even though GA is problematic due to its propensity to both dimerize and condense, our intensities agree well with the few previously published values. Using the ν10 band Q-branch at 860.51 cm(-1), we have also determined GA mixing ratios in biomass burning plumes generated by field and laboratory burns of fuels from the southeastern and southwestern United States, including the first IR field measurements of GA in smoke. The GA emission factors were anti-correlated with modified combustion efficiency confirming release of GA from smoldering combustion. The GA emission factors (grams of GA emitted per kilogram of biomass burned on a dry mass basis) had a low dependence on fuel type consistent with the production mechanism being pyrolysis of cellulose. GA was emitted at 0.23 ± 0.13% of CO from field fires, and we calculate that it accounts for ∼18% of the aqueous-phase SOA precursors that we were able to measure.

Extracts of human term amnion, placenta, and chorion/decidual tissue (n = 5) contained gastrin-releasing peptide-like immunoreactivity (GRPLI) in amounts of 4.7 +/- 2.9 (pmol/g wet wt; mean +/- SEM), 3.6 +/- 1.1 and 2.9 +/- 1.5, respectively. Using C-terminally directed antisera and gel filtration chromatography and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), each tissue contained molecular forms consistent with the presence of GRP1-27 and GRP18-27 but also contained larger amounts of two GRPLI peaks, which apparently are novel GRP-like peptides. In contrast, tissue extracts of human fetal lung contained only GRP1-27, GRP14-27, and GRP18-27. Using RT-PCR and specific GRP primers and probes, messenger RNA encoding for GRP was readily demonstrable from 6-weeks gestation throughout pregnancy to term in full-thickness membranes, placental villi, and decidua. Positive immunohistochemical staining for GRP occurred in extravillous trophoblasts in decidual septa and fetal membranes, cytotrophoblasts, syncytiotrophoblast, and certain stromal cells in placental villi and amniotic epithelium. GRPLI and GRP messenger RNA were present from the earliest dates examined (6-9 weeks) throughout pregnancy to term. Given the proven trophic nature of GRP and related peptides, these peptides may play important roles in maternal, placental, and fetal development during human pregnancy.

Human B cell-negative severe combined immunodeficiency (B-SCID) is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by both T and B lymphocytopenia and agammaglobulinemia. Although lymphocytes of B-SCID patients express defective recombinase activity and rarely succeed in making Ag receptors, the molecular defect of the human B-SCID remains to be identified. To gain more insight into the human B-SCID defect and its effect on the Ab repertoire, we examined the Ig heavy (H) chain genes of the peripheral blood leaky B cells from three B-SCID patients. Although the number of B cells in their peripheral blood was very limited, we could obtain 41 productive VDJ recombinations from the 58 joints. The recombinations showed a grossly altered pattern characterized by short N nucleotides, short deleted nucleotides from 5' JH segments, immature JH and D segment utilization, absence of VDDJ recombination, and all but one JH segment equal to germline JH segments. Therefore, Ab repertoire of IgH chain gene in human B-SCID was limited because of restricted junctional and combinatorial diversity and few somatic mutations. Furthermore, unusually long P nucleotides were inserted in junctional sequences, which might indicate that resolution of hairpin is impaired in human B-SCID as in the murine SCID.

An electron-affinic compound, AK-2123, and the anti-hypertensive agent, hydra lazine, were combined with radiation and hyperthermia for treatment of murine SCC-VII tumours. Hydralazine markedly decreased tumour perfusion while AK-2123 had no influence on it. Hydralazine enhanced the tumouricidal effects of hyperthermia alone and in combination with radiation. AK-2123 provided a radiosensitization which was significant only in tumours irradiated without supplementary hyperthermia. The greatest tumour response was achieved when thermoradiotherapy was combined with hydralazine alone; the additional use of AK-2123 with this treatment combination did not further increase the effect. It is concluded that hydralazine plus heat virtually eliminated a hypoxia related radioresistance in tumours, thus removing the requirement for AK-2123 administration.

The structures and magnetic properties of CoCrPt/Cr thin-film media prepared at low temperatures are studied with a view to using the media on pre-embossed plastic disk substrates. Increasing the underlayer thickness causes isolation of the magnetic grains, which are epitaxially grown on the Cr grains. This isolation increases both the coercivity and the fluctuation field, which is reported to be inversely related to the medium noise. Decreasing the magnetic layer thickness from 40 nm to l 0 nm also increases the fluctuation field without significantly decreasing the coercivity. A film with an isolation-enhanced structure and with a thin magnetic layer of 20 nm prepared on a glass substrate shows a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB in 50kFCI recording. A linear density resolution (D50) of 72 kFCI is also observed.

An extensive program of experiments focused on biomass burning emissions began with a laboratory phase in which vegetative fuels commonly consumed in prescribed fires were collected in the southeastern and southwestern US and burned in a series of 71 fires at the US Forest Service Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. The particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions were measured by gravimetric filter sampling with subsequent analysis for elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and 38 elements. The trace gas emissions were measured by an open-path Fourier transform infrared (OP-FTIR) spectrometer, proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), proton-transfer ion-trap mass spectrometry (PIT-MS), negative-ion proton-transfer chemical-ionization mass spectrometry (NI-PT-CIMS), and gas chromatography with MS detection (GC-MS). 204 trace gas species (mostly non-methane organic compounds (NMOC)) were identified and quantified with the above instruments. Many of the 182 species quantified by the GC-MS have rarely, if ever, been measured in smoke before. An additional 153 significant peaks in the unit mass resolution mass spectra were quantified, but either could not be identified or most of the signal at that molecular mass was unaccounted for by identifiable species. In a second, "field" phase of this program, airborne and ground-based measurements were made of the emissions from prescribed fires that were mostly located in the same land management units where the fuels for the lab fires were collected. A broad variety, but smaller number of species (21 trace gas species and PM2.5) was measured on 14 fires in chaparral and oak savanna in the southwestern US, as well as pine forest understory in the southeastern US and Sierra Nevada mountains of California. The field measurements of emission factors (EF) are useful both for modeling and to examine the representativeness of our lab fire EF. The lab EF/field EF ratio for the pine understory fuels was not statistically different from one, on average. However, our lab EF for "smoldering compounds" emitted from the semiarid shrubland fuels should likely be increased by a factor of ~2.7 to better represent field fires. Based on the lab/field comparison, we present emission factors for 357 pyrogenic species (including unidentified species) for 4 broad fuel types: pine understory, semiarid shrublands, coniferous canopy, and organic soil. To our knowledge this is the most comprehensive measurement of biomass burning emissions to date and it should enable improved representation of smoke composition in atmospheric models. The results support a recent estimate of global NMOC emissions from biomass burning that is much higher than widely used estimates and they provide important insights into the nature of smoke. 31–72% of the mass of gas-phase NMOC species was attributed to species that we could not identify. These unidentified species are not represented in most models, but some provision should be made for the fact that they will react in the atmosphere. In addition, the total mass of gas-phase NMOC divided by the mass of co-emitted PM2.5 averaged about three (range ~2.0–8.7). About 35–64% of the NMOC were likely semivolatile or of intermediate volatility. Thus, the gas-phase NMOC represent a large reservoir of potential precursors for secondary formation of ozone and organic aerosol. For the single lab fire in organic soil about 28% of the emitted carbon was present as gas-phase NMOC and ~72% of the mass of these NMOC was unidentified, highlighting the need to learn more about the emissions from smoldering organic soils. The mass ratio of total NMOC to "NOx as NO" ranged from 11 to 267, indicating that NOx-limited O3 production would be common in evolving biomass burning plumes. The fuel consumption per unit area was 7.0 ± 2.3 Mg ha−1 and 7.7 ± 3.7 Mg ha−1 for pine-understory and semiarid shrubland prescribed fires, respectively.

An algorithm to design servo systems for future magnetic disk drives has been developed. An optimal relationship between the trackwidth and the servo bandwidth of a magnetic disk drive which minimizes the limit signal S/N ratio is proposed which takes into account position signal noise and mechanical vibrations. The idea of required accuracy distribution is introduced. A dual-stage actuator with a single-input single-output (SISO) system is used to confirm the calculated results. This paper describes a method for obtaining the desired servo signal quality and introduces a relationship between trackwidth and servo performance that can make it possible to design head positioning systems for trackwidths under one micron.

We have measured emission factors for 19 trace gas species and particulate matter (PM2.5) from 14 prescribed fires in chaparral and oak savanna in the southwestern US, as well as conifer forest understory in the southeastern US and Sierra Nevada mountains of California. These are likely the most extensive emission factor field measurements for temperate biomass burning to date and the only published emission factors for temperate oak savanna fuels. This study helps to close the gap in emissions data available for temperate zone fires relative to tropical biomass burning. We present the first field measurements of the biomass burning emissions of glycolaldehyde, a possible precursor for aqueous phase secondary organic aerosol formation. We also measured the emissions of phenol, another aqueous phase secondary organic aerosol precursor. Our data confirm previous observations that urban deposition can impact the NOx emission factors and thus subsequent plume chemistry. For two fires, we measured both the emissions in the convective smoke plume from our airborne platform and the unlofted residual smoldering combustion emissions with our ground-based platform. The smoke from residual smoldering combustion was characterized by emission factors for hydrocarbon and oxygenated organic species that were up to ten times higher than in the lofted plume, including high 1,3-butadiene and isoprene concentrations which were not observed in the lofted plume. This should be considered in modeling the air quality impacts for smoke that disperses at ground level. We also show that the often ignored unlofted emissions can significantly impact estimates of total emissions. Preliminary evidence suggests large emissions of monoterpenes in the residual smoldering smoke. These data should lead to an improved capacity to model the impacts of biomass burning in similar temperate ecosystems.

Boreal regions comprise about 17% of the global land area, and they both affect and are influenced by climate change. To better understand boreal forest fire emissions and plume evolution, 947 whole air samples were collected aboard the NASA DC-8 research aircraft in summer 2008 as part of the ARCTAS-B field mission, and analyzed for 79 non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) using gas chromatography. Together with simultaneous measurements of CO2, CO, CH4, CH2O, NO2, NO, HCN and CH3CN, these measurements represent the most comprehensive assessment of trace gas emissions from boreal forest fires to date. Based on 105 air samples collected in fresh Canadian smoke plumes, 57 of the 80 measured NMVOCs (including CH2O) were emitted from the fires, including 45 species that were quantified from boreal forest fires for the first time. After CO2, CO and CH4, the largest emission factors (EFs) for individual species were formaldehyde (2.1 ± 0.2 g kg−1), followed by methanol, NO2, HCN, ethene, α-pinene, β-pinene, ethane, benzene, propene, acetone and CH3CN. Globally, we estimate that boreal forest fires release 2.4 ± 0.6 Tg C yr−1 in the form of NMVOCs, with approximately 41% of the carbon released as C1–C2 NMVOCs and 21% as pinenes. These are the first reported field measurements of monoterpene emissions from boreal forest fires, and we speculate that the pinenes, which are relatively heavy molecules, were detected in the fire plumes as the result of distillation of stored terpenes as the vegetation is heated. Their inclusion in smoke chemistry models is expected to improve model predictions of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. The fire-averaged EF of dichloromethane or CH2Cl2, (6.9 ± 8.6) ×10−4 g kg−1, was not significantly different from zero and supports recent findings that its global biomass burning source appears to have been overestimated. Similarly, we found no evidence for emissions of chloroform (CHCl3) or methyl chloroform (CH3CCl3) from boreal forest fires. The speciated hydrocarbon measurements presented here show the importance of carbon released by short-chain NMVOCs, the strong contribution of pinene emissions from boreal forest fires, and the wide range of compound classes in the most abundantly emitted NMVOCs, all of which can be used to improve biomass burning inventories in local/global models and reduce uncertainties in model estimates of trace gas emissions and their impact on the atmosphere.

Biomass burning (BB) is the second largest source of trace gases and the largest source of primary fine carbonaceous particles in the global troposphere. Many recent BB studies have provided new emission factor (EF) measurements. This is especially true for non methane organic compounds (NMOC), which influence secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and ozone formation. New EF should improve regional to global BB emissions estimates and therefore, the input for atmospheric models. In this work we present an up-to-date, comprehensive tabulation of EF for known pyrogenic species based on measurements made in smoke that has cooled to ambient temperature, but not yet undergone significant photochemical processing. All the emission factors are converted to one standard form (g compound emitted per kg dry biomass burned) using the carbon mass balance method and they are categorized into 14 fuel or vegetation types. We compile a large number of measurements of biomass consumption per unit area for important fire types and summarize several recent estimates of global biomass consumption by the major types of biomass burning. Biomass burning terminology is defined to promote consistency. Post emission processes are discussed to provide a context for the emission factor concept within overall atmospheric chemistry and also highlight the potential for rapid changes relative to the scale of some models or remote sensing products. Recent work shows that individual biomass fires emit significantly more gas-phase NMOC than previously thought and that including additional NMOC can improve photochemical model performance. A detailed global estimate suggests that BB emits at least 400 Tg yr−1 of gas-phase NMOC, which is about 4 times larger than most previous estimates. Selected recent results (e.g. measurements of HONO and the BB tracers HCN and CH3CN) are highlighted and key areas requiring future research are briefly discussed.
