Passive mode-locking of two-section quantum-dot mode-locked lasers grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy on InP is reported. 1250-μm long lasers exhibit a wide tuning range of 300 MHz around the fundamental mode-locking frequency of 33.48 GHz. The frequency tuning is achieved by varying the reverse bias of the saturable absorber from 0 to −2.2 V and the gain section current from 90 to 280 mA. 3 dB optical spectra width of 6–7 nm leads to ex-facet optical pulses with full-width half-maximum down to 3.7 ps. Single-section quantum-dot mode-locked lasers show 0.8 ps broad optical pulses after external fiber-based compression. Injection current tuning from 70 to 300 mA leads to 30 MHz frequency tuning.

We present scalable large area terahertz (THz) emitters based on a nanoscale multilayer InGaAs/InAlAs heterostructure and a microstructured electrode pattern. The emitters are designed for pump lasers working at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.55µm. Electric THz fields of more than 2.5 V/cm are reached with moderate pump powers of 80 mW, the corresponding spectrum extends up to 3 THz. The saturation characteristics have been investigated for different pump laser spot sizes. For small pump powers of less than 50 mW the emitted THz field is nearly independent of the spot size, for higher pump powers and small spot sizes a clear saturation of the generated THz pulse can be observed. Hence the usage of scalable emitters is especially promising for high power fibre laser systems. The spectral content of the generated radiation is nearly independent of the parameters spot size, pump power, and bias voltage, which allows for stable operation in spectroscopic applications.

We report on scalable large-area terahertz emitters and detectors based on In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As heterostructures for excitation with 1.55 mm radiation. Different geometries involving three different electrode gap sizes are compared with respect to terahertz (THz) emission, bias field distribution, and Joule heating. The field distribution becomes more favorable for THz emission as gap size increases, while Joule heating exhibits the opposite dependence. Devices with three different gap sizes, namely 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7.5 mm, have been investigated experimentally, the emitter with a gap size of 7.5 mm showed the best performance. The scalable devices are furthermore employed as detectors. The scalable electrode geometry enables spatially integrated detection, which is attractive for specific applications, e.g., where an unfocused THz beam has to be used.

Mesa-structuring of InGaAs/InAlAs photoconductive layers is performed employing a chemical assisted ion beam etching (CAIBE) process. Terahertz photoconductive antennas for 1.5 mu m operation are fabricated and evaluated in a time domain spectrometer. Order-of-magnitude improvements versus planar antennas are demonstrated in terms of emitter power, dark current and receiver sensitivity.

Often described as the "fifth façade", the flat roof is extremely popular with architects. Its essential task is to shelter the space beneath it from the elements. Beyond this, the use of flat roofs may be optimized by integrating them as green roofs, roof terraces, circulation areas, and even productive solar roofs. In practice, however, their correct and professional realization is a highly exacting task : in addition to providing the planner with basic rules of construction and design, the Flat Roof Manual also supplies an overview of the use and construction types as well as the standard assemblies for flat roofs. Together with the most important standards and bodies of regulations, construction drawings of the principal connection points round out the volume.

Wärmedämmverbundsysteme haben sich seit Jahrzehnten zur Außendämmung von Gebäudefassaden bewährt. Bei Mineralwolle als Wärmedämmschicht ist im Zusammenhang mit der Verwendung von biolöslichen Faserdämmstoffen Anfang der 1990-er Jahre die Frage des dauerhaften Verbunds der Platten und deren Haftung mit Putz- und Klebeschichten aufgekommen. Hierüber wurden zunächst verschiedene künstliche Alterungsverfahren entwickelt und erprobt und in Systemzulassungen aufgenommen. Um aber die tatsächlich sich einstellenden Verhältnisse zu erfassen, sind Langzeit-Untersuchungen an natürlich bewitterten Wänden notwendig. Da zu erwarten war, dass hierfür vor allem die Feuchteverhältnisse einen Einfluss haben, wurden die Untersuchungen an nach Westen (Wetterseite) und Osten orientierten Versuchswänden im Freigelände Holzkirchen des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Bauphysik durchgeführt. Dabei wurden so wohl Putzträgerplatten als auch Lamellenplatten von zwei Mineralwolle-Herstellern in die Untersuchungen einbezogen. Welche Temperatur- und Feuchteverhältnisse in den Mineralwolle-Dämmplatten eines Wärmedämmverbundsystems auf einer Außenwand langfristig auftreten können, wurde vorab durch numerische Berechnungen mit dem WUFI-Programm ermittelt.

A fiber-assembled CW THz System operating at 1.5 mu m is presented. High speed telecom photodiodes integrated with planar THz antennas serve as THz emitters with power up to 10 mu W. Photoconductive antennas based on LT InGaAs/InAlAs multi-layer structures allow coherent detection. The system operates in a wide frequency range of 0.1-1.6 THz.

Bei Wärmedämmverbundsystemen mit Mineralwolle müssen die mit Bindemittel gebundenen Dämmplatten einen dauerhaften Verbund gewährleisten. Da dieser Verbund durch Temperatur- und Feuchteeinwirkung beeinträchtigt werden kann, ist zu klären, wie sich die Wetterbeanspruchung von außen und die hygrothermische Beanspruchung von innen auf das Langzeitverhalten der Mineralwolle-Dämmplatten auswirken. Diese Frage ist insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Diskussion über die Verwendung von biolöslichen Faserdämmstoffen Anfang der 1990er Jahre aufgetreten.
