Abstract The study investigated the effect of soilless media (burlap), on the morphological traits and antioxidant activities of microgreens from Brassicaceae, Amaranthaceae, and Linaceae families. The results revealed significant variations were observed in the selected morphological, biochemical composition, and antioxidant capacity of the microgreens. The radish sango and microgreens showed superior morphological characteristics compared to other microgreens. The elemental composition analysis revealed consistent moisture, ash, fat, fiber, and protein content across all families. The results revealed significant variations in the biochemical composition and antioxidant capacity of the microgreens, depending on the growing medium and between microgreens. Notably, microgreens differed in photosynthetic pigment profiles, with flaxseed and cabbage showing the highest chlorophyll content of 26.59 to 27.18 µg/g, FW and carotenoid content in a range of 3.74 to 6.39 µg/g, FW was observed in microgreens. The radish sango and beetroot microgreens exhibited elevated anthocyanin levels of 27.94–28.25 µmol/100 g, FW. Biochemical analysis indicated varying levels of ascorbic acid (177.58 to 256.46 mg/100 g, FW), total glucosinolate content (4.09 to 47.38 µmol/g, FW), phenolic content (131.44 to 298.56 mg GAE/100 g, FW), and flavonoid content (10.94 to 18.14 mg QUE/100 g, FW) were observed in selected microgreens families. Radish sango microgreens demonstrated the highest DPPH (76.82%, FW) and ABTS (88.49%, FW) radical scavenging activities, indicating superior antioxidant potential. The study showed that Brassicaceae microgreens are particularly rich in bioactive and antioxidant properties. Additionally, studies could assess the economic feasibility and scalability of soilless cultivation methods for microgreens to support their inclusion in sustainable agricultural practices and health-promoting diets.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera L. Dunal) is an Ayurvedic medicinal herb that has been known for its therapeutic properties for millennia. Ashwagandha contains several bioactive compounds, including withanolides, alkaloids, and saponins. They make ashwagandha a potent adaptogen and a versatile herb that can maintain optimal health and overall well-being. Ashwagandha reduces stress and anxiety, as well as boosts the immune system. Its anti-inflammatory properties treat arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. Ashwagandha produces an immunomodulatory effect on natural killer cells, lymphocytes, and leukemia cells. It enhances the activity of natural killer cells, increases lymphocyte function, and induces apoptosis in leukemia cells. However, its mechanism of action still remains understudied. Ashwagandha has an impact on COVID-19: phytochemical withanone blocks or weakens the interaction between S-protein and Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. Withanoside V and somniferine inhibit viral transcription and replication caused by SARSCoV-2 Mpro. This review explores the potential utilization of ashwagandha in the food industry, i.e., its safety and toxicity, as well as the mechanism behind its immunomodulatory effect.

This study aimed to assess the impact of enriching argan oil (AO) (Argania spinosa L.) using the maceration technique with thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) and oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) leaves (TL and OL) at two proportions (5 and 10%). The oxidative stability of the control and enriched oils was examined under accelerated conditions at a temperature of 60 °C for 120 days (4 months). Quality indices (Free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), ultraviolet absoptions (K232 and K270), Rancimat test, fatty acids composition, sensory attributes, simple phenolic contents (SPC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH•) were determined. As a simple, inexpensive and green method, enrichment by maceration yielded advantageous results. Compared to the control (68.05 ± 1.10 mg GAE/kg), the SPC significantly increased in enriched oils reaching notably 250.9 ± 9.1 mg GAE/kg when adding 10% of TL. Also, the enriched oil samples showed the lowest PV, p-AV and ultraviolet absorptions compared with the control. However, no noticeable changes were reported in fatty acids composition and iodine value. In terms of sensory attributes, enrichment by maceration masked the rancid odour caused by oxidation. These scientific discoveries inherently yield economic advantages by enabling the diversification of product offerings, simultaneously catering to a broader market seeking high-quality oils infused with herbs, including both AO and aromatic plants.

Corn silk (Zea mays L.), an abundant agricultural waste, contains various bioactive compounds that exhibit promising health benefits. The current study focuses on development and optimization of corn silk-based instant mix using response surface methodology. The optimized product, with 14.66% corn silk, 10% sugar and 0.22% xanthan gum in a skim milk powder base, scored 0.925 desirability. The physico-chemical and sensory parameters of optimized mix closely aligned with expected values. The instant mix packaged in metallised polyester yielded superior preservation of quality indicators over 120 days compared to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The microbial load in corn silk instant mix was observed across packaging materials and highlighting hydroxyl methyl furfural (HMF) as the primary predictor of product stability, the study calculated a 94.95 days half-life at 10 °C. Corn silk's rich bioactive compound supports its integration into nutraceuticals and instant mixes, mitigating food waste while enhancing nutritional value.Novelty statement.In this study, corn silk powder was utilized for the development of the instant mix. This innovative approach transforms corn silk, typically discarded as agricultural waste, into a commercially sustainable product that delivers the nutrients of corn silk to a broader population. Despite fresh corn silk being a perishable commodity, it has very low storage shelf life. The developed instant mix effectively preserves its nutritional value for up to six months, offering a sustainable and nutritious option for consumers.

Green leafy vegetables, especially microgreens are gaining popularity due to their high nutritional profiles, rich phytochemical content, and intense flavors. This review explores the growing commercial market for microgreens, especially in upscale dining and premium grocery outlets, highlighting consumer perceptions and their effect on market dynamics. Apart from these, the effect of modern agricultural methods that maximize the growth of microgreens is also examined. The value is anticipated to increase significantly, according to market predictions, from $1.7 billion in 2022 to $2.61 billion by 2029. Positive consumer views on microgreens health benefits drive this growth, although challenges such as varying levels of consumer awareness and income disparities affect sales. The review underscores the need for targeted research and strategic initiatives to enhance consumer understanding and improve cultivation methods to support market expansion in upcoming years.

Abstract Lung cancer (LC) ranks second most prevalent cancer in females after breast cancer and second in males after prostate cancer. Based on the GLOBOCAN 2020 report, India represented 5.9% of LC cases and 8.1% of deaths caused by the disease. Several clinical studies have shown that LC occurs because of biological and morphological abnormalities and the involvement of altered level of antioxidants, cytokines, and apoptotic markers. In the present study, we explored the antiproliferative activity of indeno[1,2-d]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine analogues against LC using in-vitro, in-silico, and in-vivo models. In-vitro screening against A549 cells revealed compounds 9B (8-methoxy-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-5,6-dihydroindeno[1,2-d]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine) and 12B (5-(4-chlorophenyl)-5,6-dihydroindeno[1,2-d]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine) as potential pyrimidine analogues against LC. Compounds 9B and 12B were docked with different molecular targets IL-6, Cyt-C, Caspase9, and Caspase3 using AutoDock Vina 4.1 to evaluate the binding affinity. Subsequently, in-vivo studies were conducted in albino Wistar rats through ethyl-carbamate (EC)- induced LC. 9B and 12B imparted significant effects on physiological (weight variation), and biochemical (anti-oxidant [TBAR’s, SOD, ProC, and GSH), lipid (TC, TG, LDL, VLDL, and HDL)], and cytokine (IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-1β) markers in EC-induced LC in albino Wistar rats. Morphological examination (SEM and H&E) and western blotting (IL-6, STAT3, Cyt-C, BAX, Bcl-2, Caspase3, and caspase9) showed that compounds 9B and 12B had antiproliferative effects. Accordingly, from the in-vitro, in-silico, and in-vivo experimental findings, we concluded that 9B and 12B have significant antiproliferative potential and are potential candidates for further evaluation to meet the requirements of investigation of new drug application.

Abstract Background Shallots are infected by various viruses like Onion yellow dwarf virus (OYDV), Leek yellow stripe virus (LYSV), Shallot latent virus (SLV) and Shallot virus X (ShVX). In India, they have been found to be persistently infected by ShVX. ShVX also infects onion and garlic in combination with other carlaviruses and potyviruses. ShVX is a member of genus Allexivirus of family Alphaflexiviridae. ShVX has a monopartite genome, which is represented by positive sense single-stranded RNA. Globally, only six complete and 3 nearly complete genome sequences of ShV X are reported to date. This number is insufficient to measure a taxon’s true molecular diversity. Moreover, the complete genome sequence of ShVX from Asia has not been reported as yet. Therefore, this study was undertaken to generate a complete genome sequence of ShVX from India. Results Shallot virus X (ShVX) is one of the significant threats to Allium crop production. In this study, we report the first complete genome sequence of the ShVX from India through Next-generation sequencing (NGS). The complete genome of the ShVX (Accession No. OK104171), from this study comprised 8911 nucleotides. In-silico analysis of the sequence revealed variability between this isolate and isolates from other countries. The dissimilarities are spread all over the genome specifically some non-coding intergenic regions. Statistical analysis of individual genes for site-specific selection indicates a positive selection in NABP region. The presence of a recombination event was detected in coat protein region. The sequence similarity percentage and phylogenetic analysis indicate ShVX Indian isolate is a distinctly different isolate. Recombination and site-specific selection may have a function in the evolution of this isolate. This is the first detailed study of the ShVX complete genome sequence from Southeast Asia. Conclusion This study presents the first report of the entire genome sequence of an Indian isolate of ShVX along with an in-depth exploration of its evolutionary traits. The findings highlight the Indian variant as a naturally occurring recombinant, emphasizing the substantial role of recombination in the evolution of this viral species. This insight into the molecular diversity of strains within a specific geographical region holds immense significance for comprehending and forecasting potential epidemics. Consequently, the insights garnered from this research hold practical value for shaping ShVX management strategies and providing a foundation for forthcoming studies delving into its evolutionary trajectory.

Baby corn, characterized by its high water activity and elevated respiration rate, poses a formidable obstacle to prolonged storage under standard ambient conditions and necessitates specialized treatments for transportation to distant locations. One of the primary postharvest challenges associated with baby corn is the occurrence of brown pigment formation because of enzymatic browning at the apex of its immature ovules, cut surfaces, and silk attached to the young ears. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of different blanching treatments on peroxidase inactivation, physicochemical properties, and functional properties of baby corn. The treatments applied were hot water blanching (HWB) at temperatures ranging from 70°C to 90 °C for 30–240 s, steam blanching (SB) for 30–240 s, and microwave blanching (MWB) at power levels of 360 W–900 W for 30–300 s. Results indicated that 90 % peroxidase enzyme inactivation occurred under different methods as 90 °C for 60 s for HWB, 100 °C for 60 s for SB, and 540 W for 30 s for MWB. These blanching methods have shown significant effects on the properties under investigation. MWB demonstrated the highest retention of ascorbic acid (94.15 %) and minimal color changes (ΔE = 5.72) in comparison to hot water and steam blanching. Similarly, the result for total flavonoid content for 540 W, 90 °C and 100 °C for 30, 60, and 60 s were found to be 3.01,1.99 and 2.10 mg QE/100g, phenols 48.98, 47.99 and 48.03 mg GAE/100g and DPPH (%) 42.55, 34.20 and 37.08 % respectively. The findings suggest that microwave blanching of baby corn at 540 W for 30 s holds promise to inactivate the peroxidase enzyme with better retention of physicochemical and functional properties.

The free-floating, filamentous cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis is highly valued and in great demand worldwide for its high-value colors and phytonutrients. These compounds find use in health foods, feed, medicines, and diagnostics. The primary objective of this work was to enhance the growth of Spirulina under both oxidative and physiological stress conditions in order to maximize the synthesis of phycocyanin and carotenoid pigments. Cultures were subjected to different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium chloride for varying temperatures and pH levels. Under lower concentrations of H2O2 (4mM), the maximum carotenoid content was increased, but the phycocyanin content was found to be stimulated at 10mM. Moreover, the synthesis of both pigments was shown to be highest under physiological stress circumstances (40mM and 60mM NaCl concentration) and at an optimal pH of 8-9, helped by a temperature range of 25-30℃. The experimental results demonstrate that both carotenoid and phycocyanin exhibit antioxidant properties even in the presence of oxidative stress. This suggests that the aforementioned circumstances can be applied in future investigations to extract different antioxidants from S. platensis.

Abstract The present study reports the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in powder form using the leaf extract of Azadirachta indica. The synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDX. The synthesized AgNPs were in a powdered state and dispersed completely in 5% polyethylene glycol (PEG) and demonstrated prolonged shelf life and enhanced bioavailability over a year without any aggregation. The resulting silver nanoformulation demonstrated complete inhibition against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Colletotrichum falcatum and 68% to 80% inhibition against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Rhizoctonia solani respectively, at 2000 ppm. The EC50 values determined through a statistical analysis were 66.42, 157.7, 19.06, and 33.30 ppm for S. sclerotiorum, C. falcatum, C. gloeosporioides, and R. solani respectively. The silver nanoformulation also established significant cytotoxicity, with a 74.96% inhibition rate against the human glioblastoma cell line U87MG at 250 ppm. The IC50 value for the cancerous cell lines was determined to be 56.87 ppm through statistical analysis. The proposed silver nanoformulation may be used as a next-generation fungicide in crop improvement and may also find application in anticancer investigations. To the best of our knowledge, this is also the first report of silver nanoformulation demonstrating complete inhibition against the economically significant phytopathogen C. falcatum.

Abstract The present research study aimed to examine three different herb extract's effects on the discoloration rate of fresh-cut pear slices using an image analysis technique. Pear slices were sprayed and dip-coated with Ocimum basilicum, Origanum vulgare, and Camellia sinensis (0.1 g/ml) extract solution. During 15 days storage period with three days intervals, all sprayed/dip-coated pear slices were analyzed for the quality attribute (TA) and color parameters notably a*, b*, hue angle (H*), lightness (L*), and total color change (ΔE). Further, order kinetic models were used to observe the color changes and to predict the shelf-life. The results obtained showed that the applicability of image analysis helped to predict the discoloration rate, and it was better fitted to the first-order (FO) kinetic model (R2 ranging from 0.87 to 0.99). Based on the kinetic model, color features ΔE and L* was used to predict the shelf-life as they had high regression coefficient values. Thus, the findings obtained from the kinetic study demonstrated Camellia sinensis (assamica) extract spray-coated pear slices reported approximately 28.63- and 27.95-days shelf-stability without much discoloration compared with all other types of surface coating.

Abstract Numerous speculations have continually emerged, trying to explore the association between COVID-19 infection and a varied range of demographic and clinical factors. Frontline healthcare workers have been the primary group exposed to this infection, and there have been limited global research that examine this cohort. However, while there are a few large studies conducted on Indian healthcare professionals to investigate their potential risk and predisposing factors to COVID-19 infection, to our knowledge there are no studies evaluating the development of long COVID in this population. This cross-sectional study systematically utilized the demographic and clinical data of 3329 healthcare workers (HCW) from a tertiary hospital in India to gain significant insights into the associations between disease prevalence, severity of SARS-Cov-2 infection and long COVID. Most of the study population was found to be vaccinated (2,615, 78.5%), while 654 (19.65%) HCWs were found to be SARS-CoV-2 positive at least once. Of the infected HCWs, 75.1% (491) did not require hospitalization, whereas the rest were hospitalized for an average duration of 9 days. A total of 206 (6.19%) individuals were found to be suffering from long COVID. Persistent weakness/tiredness was the most experienced long-COVID symptom, while females (1.79, 1.25–2.57), individuals who consumed alcohol (1.85, 1.3–2.64) or had blood group B (1.9, 1.33–2.7) were at a significantly higher risk for developing long COVID.

Finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.), ragi or mandua, is one of essential minor millets extensively grown in the Indian and African subcontinents. It is a staple food in India, particularly for people belonging to low-socioeconomic groups. Finger millet is highly valued for its content of macro- and micronutrients. It is rich in carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Its micronutrients include calcium (0.38%), dietary fiber (18%), and phenolic compounds (0.3–3%), such as catechin, epicatechin, as well as ferulic, salicylic, protocatechuic, cinnamic, and hydroxybenzoic acids, etc. Finger millet is also recognized as a source of vital amino acids, including isoleucine, leucine, methionine, and phenylalanine, which are otherwise deficient in starchy meals. In addition, finger millet is well appreciated for its pharmacological properties such as anti-diabetic, anti-tumorigenic, anti-atherosclerogenic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. To improve its nutritional and sensory properties, this grain can be processed by various traditional and advanced methods (soaking, malting, cooking, fermentation, popping, and radiation). These processing techniques equally assist in the reduction of anti-nutritional factors (tannins, phytic acid, oxalic acid, protein inhibitors, glucans) and their inhibitory effects. In this review, we highlighted the nutritional composition, health attributes, and uses of finger millet for the development of functional food products. Researchers and producers can further explore the opportunities and scope for utilizing finger millet and develop more products in the same line to solve the current issues of food and nutrition security.

Hemp seeds are gaining increasing attention in the realm of research due to their multifaceted nutritional and pharmaceutical properties. Notably, these seeds offer a rich source of protein, carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, making them a valuable addition to one's diet therefore, growing interest among researchers globally. A comprehensive literature review was conducted on the prominent databases Scopus, Elsevier, and PubMed using the keywords ''Hempseed,'' ''Phytochemistry,'' ''Nutraceuticals,'' and their food and feed applications. Studies suggest that these compounds exhibit therapeutic potential against conditions such as epilepsy, certain neurological disorders (Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases), and cardiovascular issues. Additionally, hemp seeds possess other notable properties, such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. They are also used as a dietary supplement to alleviate headaches, insomnia, high cholesterol levels, and premenstrual syndrome symptoms in women. Hempseed oil, powder, and flour are utilized to enhance the phenolic activity and antioxidant properties of food products. Additionally, hempseed cake, generated after cold pressing, boasts a high protein concentration, making it a valuable feed for ruminants. However, further research and clinical trials are necessary to fully understand and harness the potential of hemp seeds for functional foods and nutraceutical applications.

Abstract Uttar Pradesh, with a population of 237 million, is the largest agrarian state in India, located in the Indo‐Gangetic plains. Rice cultivation is widespread across all districts of Uttar Pradesh, which have varying climate regimes, irrigation infrastructures, crop management practices, and farm sizes. The state is characterized by different agroecological zones (AEZs) with semi‐arid to sub‐humid climates with significant variability in monsoon rainfall. In this study, the impact of climate change on Kharif‐season rice is estimated using crop‐climate scenarios in Uttar Pradesh. A process‐based Crop Simulation Model, Crop Estimation through Resource and Environment Synthesis‐Rice, was simulated with bias‐corrected and downscaled climate data for historical (1995–2014) and three future periods (the 2030s, 2050s, and 2090s) for two mitigation pathways (SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6. Phenology, irrigation amount, crop evapotranspiration, yield, and water use efficiency were evaluated and assessed for all AEZs. Based on the ensemble of 16 climate models, rainfed rice yield increased in the AEZs of western Uttar Pradesh due to increased rainfall, while in eastern Uttar Pradesh yield decreased, under both shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). Irrigated rice yield decreased in all AEZs under both SSPs due to an increase in temperature and a decrease in the length of the growing period, with reductions of up to 20% by the 2090s. Irrigation requirements decreased from the 2030s to the 2090s due to increased rainfall and decreased crop evapotranspiration. Despite the projected increase in rainfed yield, the overall rice yield is expected to decrease in the future under both SSPs.

Our hypothesis posited that incorporating alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) into liposomes containing Paclitaxel (PTX) could augment cellular uptake, decrease the therapeutic dosage, and alleviate PTX-related side effects. Our investigation encompassed characterization of the liposomal formulation, encompassing aspects like particle size, surface morphology, chemical structure, drug release kinetics, and stability. Compatibility studies were performed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). By utilizing the Box–Behnken design (BBD), we developed ALA-based liposomes with satisfactory particle size and entrapment efficiency. It is noteworthy that ALA incorporation led to a slight increase in particle size but did not notably affect drug entrapment. In vitro drug release assessments unveiled a sustained release pattern, with ALA-PTX liposomes demonstrating release profiles comparable to PTX liposomes. Morphological examinations confirmed the spherical structure of the liposomes, indicating that substituting ALA with phosphatidylcholine did not alter the physicochemical properties. Cellular uptake investigations showcased enhanced uptake of ALA-based liposomes in contrast to PTX liposomes, likely attributed to the heightened fluidity conferred by ALA. Efficacy against MCF-7 cells demonstrated concentration-dependent reductions in cell viability, with ALA-PTX liposomes exhibiting the lowest IC50 value. Morphological analysis confirmed apoptotic changes in cells treated with all formulations, with ALA-PTX liposomes eliciting more pronounced changes, indicative of enhanced anticancer efficacy.

Abstract Microbial pathogens are known for causing great environmental stress, owing to which emerging challenges like lack of eco-friendly remediation measures, development of drug-resistant and mutational microbial strains, etc., warrants novel and green routes as a stepping stone to serve such concerns sustainably. In the present study, palladium (Pd) doped manganese (II, III) oxide (Mn3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using an aqueous Syzygium aromaticum bud (ASAB) extract. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of ASAB extract indicates the presence of polyphenolics such as phenols, alkaloids, and flavonoids that can act as potential capping agents in NPs synthesis, which was later confirmed in FTIR analysis of pure and Pd-doped Mn3O4 NPs. XRD, Raman, and XPS analyses confirmed the Pd doping in Mn3O4 NPs. FESEM and HRTEM study reveals the mixed morphologies dominated by nanocorns appearance. Zeta potential investigation reveals high stability of the synthesized NPs in colloidal solutions. The developed Pd-doped Mn3O4 NPs were tested against two fungal phytopathogens, i.e., Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, known for causing great economic losses in yield and quality of different plant species. The antifungal activity of synthesized Pd‐doped Mn3O4 NPs displayed a dose‐dependent response with a maximum of ~92%, and ~72% inhibition was recorded against S. sclerotiorum and C. gloeosporioides, respectively, at 1000 ppm concentration. However, C. gloeosporioides demonstrated higher sensitivity to Pd‐doped Mn3O4 NPs upto 500 ppm) treatment than S. sclerotiorum. The prepared NPs also showed significant antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis. The Pd-doped Mn3O4 NPs were effective even at low treatment doses, i.e., 50–100 ppm, with the highest Zone of inhibition obtained at 1000 ppm concentration. Our findings provide a novel, eco-benign, and cost-effective approach for formulating a nanomaterial composition offering multifaceted utilities as an effective antimicrobial agent.

Introduction: Cancer impacts not only people living with cancer but also their caregivers. In hospital, caregivers always have pressure on them and their personal and private lives are disrupted during the caring process. Aim: To identify the various factors affecting the Quality Of Life (QOL) among caregivers of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: This quantitative study with an exploratory research design was conducted in oncology Outpatient Department (OPD) of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh, India, from November 2019 to February 2020. A total of 256 caregivers of cancer patients, who were visiting various oncology units were included. Data regarding caregiver’s sample characteristics, clinical variables and caregiver’s Oncology Quality of Life questionnaire (CarGOQoL) were collected. Statistical analysis was done using Chi-square test and Fisher-exact tests were used to study variables. Results: Majority, 94 (37%) belonged to 41-50 years age group, 143 (56%) were females, and 142 (56%) lived in rural areas. Patients’ diagnoses were breast cancer in 94 (37%), Stage-III in 133 (52%), symptoms lasting more than 6-12 months in 103 (40%), and were partial dependent in 172 (67%). A total of 123 (48%) of caregivers scored less in the CarGOQoL questionnaire, so about half of the caregivers had a poor QOL. Caregiver coping (43%) and the private life domain were enormously affected in 193 (37%). Significant relationships with caregivers’ QOL were seen for variables like female gender (p-value=0.037), educational level of patients (p-value=0.018), caregivers with co-morbidities (p-value=0.05), and the number of earning members in the family (p-value=0.022). Conclusion: Care burden always has an impact on the caregiver’s overall QOL. It mainly affected their psychological well-being, burdens, and private lives. Therefore, comprehensive attention should be given to patients as well as caregivers.

Underutilized legume comprises vital nutrients with a higher proportion of protein (23-43 %) equal to soybean, and lima bean and greater than chickpea and green pea. In addition, it has a good calorific value, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. The presence of bioactive components such as polyphenols and flavonoids increases the market demand in pharmacological industries at the global level. It exhibits several pharmacological properties like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antimicrobial, and antihypertensive. It has a higher concentration of antinutritional compounds like l-DOPA, phytates, tannin, oxalate, hydrogen cyanide, and trypsin inhibitors. These barriers prevent the consumption of velvet beans, and they can be reduced by both conventional and modern methods. The methods include dehulling, boiling, soaking, cooking, roasting, toasting, fermentation, sonication, and acid and alkali treatment. Each method has a distinct effect on the method of removal of antinutrients and it has an impact on its reduction percentage. The degree of modification in the physicochemical composition does fall under a considerable limit and doesn't affect the actual nutritional composition of the mucuna seeds. It is considered an alternative protein source to animal protein, hence extraction of protein from velvet beans has a better scope to isolate and concentrate protein and its peptides. This flour has been utilized in food formulations like bread, crackers, food mix, beverage mix, mucuna milk, and traditional foods like moin moin, chapatti, and mash. The major constraint of the utilization in the food industry is due to the presence of antinutrients and their removal and depletion by various treatments was focussed. It can replace the source of animal protein, fulfill the protein insufficiency of the population and increase food security.

Dear Editor, The Brahm Govind Prasad or BG Prasad classification for eliciting the socio-economic classification of the urban and rural families in India is a commonly used scale as a determinant of an individual’s health. It is easy to calculate, and it can be applied to all sections of society This classification purely depends on rates of year-on-year inflation and the changes in prices of consumer products such as Food & Beverages, Pan, Supari, Tobacco & Intoxicants, Clothing & Footwear, Housing, Fuel & Light and Miscellaneous (1). These outcome of these changes are depicted in the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) which is released by the Labour Bureau, an attached office of the Ministry of Labour & Employment under the Government of India. The All-India CPI-IW for September 2023 stands at 137.5 (one hundred thirty-seven point five) (2). There is a scope for periodic revision of the BG Prasad Scale as it was initially introduced in 1961, with the CPI for 1960 serving as the base value of 100. In the subsequent years, few more modifications and emendations had to be made. Linkage factors were introduced to convert the CPI back to the base year of 1960 (100) during the years 1982, 2001 and 2016 which are 4.63, 4.93 and 2.88 respectively (3, 4). Abstract The present study aims at development of a mathematical model for the fixed-bed column adsorption that relates the reactor parameters with the breakthrough curve. Effects of operating parameters like bed height, flow rate, initial adsorbate concentration on the adsorption were investigated by using various breakthrough curves. The arbitrary constants of the developed model were found to be dependent on the operating parameters of the breakthrough kinetics. The proposed model showed incredible results (Breakthrough Curve R 2 > 0.98) for the referenced data. The flexibility of this model can be seen from the fact that the coefficients of parameters in the Arbitrary Constants Relation for the adsorbate–adsorbent pair are required to be determined only once and can be used repeatedly considering no change in any external factors affecting the working of the adsorbent. As the general adsorption curve follows a typical sigmoid curve, once the Arbitrary Constants Relations are known, the reactor can be optimized by selecting the accurate values of the reactor parameter leading to a slower C t/C o growth with respect to time. The information about the saturation limit of adsorbent can be used to predict attainment of the saturation limit. The proposed model will reduce the significant number of complicated experiments required to optimize the reactor. The model can also determine the time after which effluent concentration becomes 63.21% of the influent adsorbate concentration without any experimentation by using the Arbitrary Constants Relation, which is of great industrial importance.

Abstract Background Hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor of the head and neck region characterized by proliferation of endothelial cells with epithelioid morphology. This is an indolent tumor known to appear during adult life, with potential for recurrence, but unlikely to metastasize. Although reports of endotheliomas affecting soft tissues, skin, viscera, bone, or lymph nodes have been reported, very few cases of hemangioendothelioma of nasal cavity have come to light, that too in adults only. Case presentation Authors here-in present an unusual case of hemangioendothelioma of nasal cavity in a 9-year-old girl with a 6-month history of intermittent epistaxis and nasal obstruction. The tumor was excised endoscopically under general anesthesia and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Conclusions Wide excision is the treatment of choice. Regular follow-up is advised as potential for recurrence is high.

A complex metabolic condition referred to as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance (IR) and decreased insulin production. Obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and chronic inflammation are just a few of the cardiometabolic illnesses that people with T2DM are more likely to acquire and results in cardiovascular issues. It is essential to comprehend the mechanistic insights into these risk variables in order to prevent and manage cardiovascular problems in T2DM effectively. Impaired glycemic control leads to upregulation of De novo lipogenesis (DNL), promote hepatic triglyceride (TG) synthesis, worsening dyslipidemia that is accompanied by low levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and high amounts of small, dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) further developing atherosclerosis. By causing endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation, chronic hyperglycemia worsens already existing cardiometabolic risk factors. Vasoconstriction, inflammation, and platelet aggregation are caused by endothelial dysfunction, which is characterized by decreased nitric oxide production, increased release of vasoconstrictors, proinflammatory cytokines, and adhesion molecules. The loop of IR and endothelial dysfunction is sustained by chronic inflammation fueled by inflammatory mediators produced in adipose tissue. Infiltrating inflammatory cells exacerbate inflammation and the development of plaque in the artery wall. In addition, the combination of chronic inflammation, dyslipidemia, and IR contributes to the emergence of hypertension, a prevalent comorbidity in T2DM. The ability to target therapies and management techniques is made possible by improvements in our knowledge of these mechanistic insights. Aim of present review is to enhance our current understanding of the mechanistic insights into the cardiometabolic risk factors related to T2DM provides important details into the interaction of pathophysiological processes resulting in cardiovascular problems. Understanding these pathways will enable us to create efficient plans for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular problems in T2DM patients, ultimately leading to better overall health outcomes.

Grape leaves, scientifically known as Vitis vinifera, the primary by-product obtained after the processing of grapes, are gathered in enormous amounts and disposed of as agricultural waste. For more sustainable agriculture and better food systems, it is crucial to investigate these byproducts’ nutritional values. The primary bioactive compounds present in grape leaves are quercetin, resveratrol, caffeic acid, kaempferol, and gallic acid, which favour pharmacological effects on human health such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and hepatoprotective. Furthermore, grape leaves extract has been used as a functional ingredient for creating both food and non-food products. The aim of the current review is to review the nutritional and phytochemical composition of various varieties of grape leaves, their health-promoting characteristics and their applications. The study also highlights the various extraction techniques including conventional and non-conventional methods for extracting the various bioactive compounds present in grape leaves. Grape leaves bioactives can be extracted using environmentally safe and sustainable processes, which are in line with the rising demand for eco-friendly and healthful products worldwide. These methods are perfectly suited to the changing needs of both customers and industries since they lessen environmental effect, enhance product quality, and offer financial advantages.

Abstract Moringa oleifera Lam. (M. oleifera), aka “Shigru,” “mother's best friend,” “miracle tree,” “horseradish tree,” “drumstick tree,” and “oil tree,” native of the sub‐Himalayan region of northern India, belongs to the Moringaceae family. The high nutritional value of M. oleifera makes it suitable for both nutritional and medicinal purposes. Because of its chemical constituents, M. oleifera is used to treat and combat malnutrition, especially in infants and nursing mothers. These days, herbal medicine and its phytocompound derivatives are also being recognized as effective complementary therapies for cancer treatment. So, in this study, M. oleifera is reviewed for its anticancer property. By thoroughly scanning the PubMed, Embase, SinoMed, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases, an extensive up‐to‐date report on its ethnomedicinal use, nutritional, phytochemistry, and pharmacotherapeutic potential is done. It has valuable nutrients such as vitamins, proteins, iron, calcium, antioxidants (flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenols) and ascorbic acid. Additionally, it is used as an antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antispasmodic, antimicrobial, anticancer, and antidiabetic agent. There are also concrete evidence that this plant's bioactive constituents, numerous extracts have a high biopotential in a number of cancer cells, through its antioxidative, anti‐inflammatory, antiproliferative, and cell cycle arresting properties. This extensive literature review will provide insights into several mechanisms and signaling pathways of its various phytoconstituents that can mitigate the growth of cancer cells in various experimental models, safety and toxicity concerns, and drug–drug interactions.

The basic pathophysiology of all childhood glaucoma results from impaired outflow through the trabecular meshwork. Anterior Segment Dysgeneses (ASD) are a group of nonacquired anomalies associated with secondary developmental glaucoma, characterized by impaired development of the structures of the anterior segment. Many genes impact the development of the anterior segment. The cause of the development of the abnormalities is thought to be multifactorial. Molecular research has helped our understanding of the molecular basis of ASD and the developmental mechanisms underlying these conditions. Identifying the genetic changes underlying ASD has gradually led to the recognition that some of these conditions may be parts of a disease spectrum rather than isolated anomalies. The characterization of the underlying genetic abnormalities responsible for glaucoma is the first step toward developing diagnostic and screening tests, which could identify individuals at risk for disease before irreversible optic nerve damage occurs. It is also crucial for genetic counseling and risk stratification of later pregnancies. It also aids prenatal testing by various methods allowing for effective genetic counseling. This review summarizes various ocular and systemic conditions that result in secondary developmental glaucoma and provide an overview of the phenotypes, the diagnosis and principles of management of the various disorders.

Sarcoidosis can have a varied presentation, including an overlap with tuberculosis (TB). It can precede or coexist with TB. Certain features such as cavitary consolidation, pleural effusion, and tree-in-bud nodules are highly suggestive of active TB. The perilymphatic distribution of micronodules and discrete lymph nodes are features suggestive of sarcoidosis. Identifying the coexistence of the diseases is essential, as the treatment of either disease is a paradox: immunosuppression in sarcoidosis and antitubercular therapy in TB. There are certain conditions in which immunosuppression is used in TB, e.g., tubercular meningitis, ocular TB, and TB pericarditis. This article aims to provide a better understanding of the clinical dilemma faced during the treatment of granulomatous inflammation and adds to the existing literature regarding the overlap between sarcoidosis and TB.

Background: Classically subclavian vein catheterization is done in neutral arm position; recently, it has been done in different arm positions to compare success rate and catheter misplacement. There is a paucity of literature for comparing abducted and neutral arm position for right infraclavicular subclavian vein cannulation. Aim: Comparison of success rate of abducted and neutral arm position for right infraclavicular subclavian vein cannulation under real-time ultrasound guidance in patients undergoing elective neurosurgery under general anesthesia. Design: Randomized comparative study. Materials and Methods: After approval from Institutional Review Board and Ethical Committee, 100 patients of 18–70 years of age, of either sex, posted for elective neurosurgery under general anesthesia, requiring right subclavian vein cannulation were included in our study. They were randomly divided into two groups: abducted arm position (group 1-AG) and neutral arm position (group 2-NG) using sealed envelope technique. Results: First attempt success rate was higher in AG group compared to NG group (P value- 0.741). Times taken (seconds) for cannulation in NG and AG group, catheter misplacement and hematoma (P value- 0.37, P value- 0.37, P value- 1, respectively) were lesser in AG Group. Conclusion: For USG-guided infraclavicular subclavian vein cannulation, abducted arm position, and neutral arm position in terms of first attempt success rate, number of attempts and associated complications has comparable results; however, further studies with larger group of patients are required to assess the overall advantage of abducted arm position over neutral arm position.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare entity most often associated with primary myelofibrosis, chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms, chronic hemolytic states, such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia and certain solid tumors. Various theories have been postulated as the mechanism for occurrence of EMH. Iron deposition and/or fatty infiltration along with increased density of liver and spleen may be observed on imaging. Also, organs may show diffuse involvement or mass like foci of hematopoiesis on imaging. Treatment includes transfusion, surgery, hydroxyurea and radiation. In this review we narrate the clinicopathological features, radiological imaging and treatment strategies of non hepatosplenic Extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Abstract Protein is one of the essential major nutrients required for the cell functioning in human body. Complete proteins, which are usually found in animal‐based proteins, despite of having high biovailability also cause adverse effect on the environment and increased the risk of diet‐related chronic diseases. Recent years have witnessed enhanced awareness about the health benefits of substituting animal‐based proteins with plant‐based proteins, especially in developed countries. Nitrogen‐fixing grain legumes are considered important sources of protein in many developing countries as they are generally cheaper than meat or cereals. Extensive research has been conducted on several underutilized legumes with similar nutritional properties to soybean; one of these legumes is velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens). Though it is rich in protein (27%), complementary amino acid pattern to that of cereal grains exerts health beneficial properties, including antiparkinson, antidiabetic, and anticancer properties, it is limited for human consumption due to the presence of antinutrients. This review provides insight into the potential use of this underutilized legume in resolving the global protein crisis and address food insecurity issues. Additionally, the review focuses on various processing conditions necessary to utilize velvet bean for the development of food products and by‐products like protein isolate, concentrate, flour and their functional properties, and toxicological viewpoint. This current might help in driving future research and applications in velvet bean as a sustainable, plant‐based protein source for human foods along with the critical research areas for their improvement.

Heavy metal pollution of soil is a major concern due to its non-biodegradable nature, bioaccumulation, and persistence in the environment. To explore the probable function of EDTA in ameliorating heavy metal toxicity and achieve the sustainable development goal (SDG), Brassica juncea L. seedlings were treated with different concentrations of EDTA (0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mM Kg−1) in heavy metal-polluted soil. Plant samples were collected 60 days after sowing; photosynthetic pigments, H2O2, monoaldehyde (MDA), antioxidant enzymes, and ascorbic acid content, as well as plant biomass, were estimated in plants. Soil and plant samples were also examined for the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Pb, and Hg. Moreover, values of the phytoremediation factor were utilized to assess the accumulation capacity of heavy metals by B. juncea under EDTA treatments. In the absence of EDTA, B. juncea seedlings accrued heavy metals in their roots and shoots in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the highest biomass of plants (roots and shoots) was recorded with the application of 2 mM kg−1 EDTA. Moreover, high levels (above 3 mM kg−1) of EDTA concentration have reduced the biomass of plants (roots and shoots), photosynthetic area, and chlorophyll content. The effect of EDTA levels on photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b) revealed that with an increment in EDTA concentration, accumulation of heavy metals was also increased in the plant, subsequently decreasing the chlorophyll a and b concentration in the plant. TLF was found to be in the order Pb> Hg> Zn> and >Ni, while TF was found to be in the order Hg>Zn>Ni>Pb, and the best dose was 3 mM kg−1 EDTA for Hg and 4 mM kg−1 for Pb, Ni, and Zn. Furthermore, hyperaccumulation of heavy metals enhanced the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anions (O2•−), and lipid peroxidation. It also interrupts mechanisms of the antioxidant defense system. Furthermore, heavy metal stress reduced plant growth, biomass, and chlorophyll (chl) content. These findings suggest that the exogenous addition of EDTA to the heavy metal-treated seedlings increases the bioavailability of heavy metals for phytoextraction and decreases heavy metal-induced oxidative injuries by restricting heavy metal uptake and components of their antioxidant defense systems.

Contemporary agricultural practices rely heavily on synthetic fertilizers to provide essential nutrients for crops, contributing to diminished soil fertility and environmental pollution. An innovative solution lies in the strategic combination of nanoparticles and biofertilizers, as a unique and environmentally friendly technology, enhancing soil enzyme activity and the availability of essential plant nutrients. The goal of this study was to show the efficacy of this technology and identify the best combination of nanoparticles and PGPB for plant growth promotion, nutrient uptake, and soil health. This study investigated the efficacy of nanobiofertilizers generated by combining two plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), (Bacillus sp.) CP4 and AHP3, along with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MS NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in different combinations. A greenhouse study employing two wheat varieties, NABI MG11 (black wheat) and HD3086, was conducted. There were 15 treatments, including treatments consisting of only bacteria, treatments consisting of the combination of nanoparticles and nanobiofertilizers, and 1 control treatment, and each treatment had three replicates. In evaluating plant growth characteristics, the synergy between ZnO NPs and CP4 demonstrated the most favorable outcomes in terms of overall plant growth and various traits. Similarly, MS NPs, in conjunction with both PGPB, exhibited enhancements in plant growth traits, including fresh weight, chlorophyll content, proline levels, and nitrogen content. Over half of the combination treatments with nanoparticles and PGPB did not show a significant improvement in plant growth promotion traits and soil health when compared to nanoparticles alone. The findings of this study underscore the potential of nanobiofertilizers as an innovative and robust tool for promoting sustainable agriculture.

Sugar industries generate substantial quantities of waste biomass after the extraction of sugar water from sugarcane stems, while biomass-derived porous carbon has currently received huge research attention for its sustainable application in energy storage systems. Hence, we have investigated waste sugarcane bagasse (WSB) as a cheap and potential source of porous carbon for supercapacitors. The electrochemical capacitive performance of WSB-derived carbon was further enhanced through hybridization with silicon dioxide (SiO2) as a cost-effective pseudocapacitance material. Porous WSB-C/SiO2 nanocomposites were prepared via the in situ pyrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)-modified WSB biomass. The morphological analysis confirms the pyrolytic growth of SiO2 nanospheres on WSB-C. The electrochemical performance of WSB-C/SiO2 nanocomposites was optimized by varying the SiO2 content, using two different electrolytes. The capacitance of activated WSB-C was remarkably enhanced upon hybridization with SiO2, while the nanocomposite electrode demonstrated superior specific capacitance in 6 M KOH electrolyte compared to neutral Na2SO4 electrolyte. A maximum specific capacitance of 362.3 F/g at 0.25 A/g was achieved for the WSB-C/SiO2 105 nanocomposite. The capacitance retention was slightly lower in nanocomposite electrodes (91.7–86.9%) than in pure WSB-C (97.4%) but still satisfactory. A symmetric WSB-C/SiO2 105//WSB-C/SiO2 105 supercapacitor was fabricated and achieved an energy density of 50.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 250 W kg−1, which is substantially higher than the WSB-C//WSB-C supercapacitor (22.1 Wh kg−1).

El estado de Uttarakhand en la India se encuentra en una zona de alta actividad sísmica, por lo que se han seguido criterios de diseño resistentes a los terremotos para las principales prácticas de construcción en esta región. Una de las principales entradas para el diseño resistente a los terremotos es la velocidad media de la onda de corte (VS ) a 30 m de profundidad. En el presente trabajo, en veintiséis sitios diferentes, la técnica de la relación espectral horizontal a vertical (HVSR) y el análisis multicanal de onda de superficie (MASW) se utiliza para el análisis conjunto para obtener un modelo de velocidad unidimensional que soporta tanto la curva de espectro de HV como la curva de dispersión obtenida de los métodos HVSR y MASW, respectivamente. Los perfiles de onda de corte obtenidos en varios sitios se comparan con los datos de registro de perforación obtenidos de la perforación y muestra claramente que los Vs para la misma formación tienen una fuerte dependencia de la profundidad en la que ocurrió. Se han utilizado datos de veinticuatro perfiles de onda de corte para preparar una relación de regresión lineal de Vs para diferentes formaciones litológicas con res- pecto a su profundidad de ocurrencia. El error cuadrático medio obtenido a partir de la relación desarrollada para varias litologías muestra claramente que los resultados están bastante bien dentro del rango de aceptación. Las relaciones desarrolladas han sido validadas adicionalmente por el cálculo de perfil Vs de los datos de registro de perforación obtenidos en dos nuevos sitios de ubicación que no están incluidos en el conjunto de datos utilizado para la preparación de relaciones de regresión. Una comparación de dos secciones de velocidad muestra claramente que el perfil de velocidad calculado a partir de la relación de regresión coincide estrechamente con el obtenido de la encuesta sísmica y por lo tanto se establece la eficacia de la relación de regresión desarrollada para su implementación práctica. Griscelli syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypopigmentation of skin and hair. Griscelli syndrome type 2, one of the three subtypes of Griscelli syndrome, is characterized by recurrent infections, in addition to pigmentary abnormalities. We present the case of a 15-year-old girl with late onset of Griscelli syndrome type 2 features: pigmentary changes of hair and skin, hepatosplenomegaly, pancreatitis and pancytopenia. We also highlight the diagnostic dilemma in patients with coexisting features of malnutrition. Both conditions show some overlapping clinical features and hence, establishing a diagnosis may be challenging.

Introduction: Brachial plexus blocks are routinely performed to provide anaesthesia and analgesia for upper limb orthopaedic surgeries. Various adjuvants are being added to local anaesthetic solution to prolong the duration of sensory and motor blockade to ensure successful completion of long duration surgeries with adequate postoperative analgesia. Clonidine is used in varying dosages as adjuvant for peripheral nerve block. Aim: To study different dosages of clonidine when used as an adjuvant in infraclavicular approach to brachial plexus block. Materials and Methods: The randomised double-blind clinical study enrolled 60 American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) I and II patients, between ages of 18-60 years, undergoing elective forearm orthopaedic surgery, lasting more than one hour. Based on the dose of clonidine added, the patients were distributed to group I (75 μg); group II (100 μg) and group III (150 μg). They were compared with regard to onset and duration of sensory and motor blockade, haemodynamic parameters, quality of sedation and side-effects. The results were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Results: Demographic profile was comparable between the study groups. The onset of sensory and motor duration was faster in group III (5.8±1.65 minutes; 10.08±0.98 minutes). Also, the duration of sensory and motor blockade was highest in group III (11.02±2.33 hours; 10.44±1.45 hours). Patients in group III had significantly higher level of sedation in comparison to other groups. Conclusion: Clonidine in a dose of 150 μg provides significantly longer duration of sensory and motor blockade without any adverse haemodynamic outcomes.

Abstract Background Brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee is the key pest of brinjal that causes a significant yield loss. Farmers spray wide range of insecticides right from vegetative stage till last harvesting stage to protect the crop from the notorious BSFB, which leads to pesticide residue and insecticide resistance problems. To overcome this, now focus has shifted to bio pesticides but their commercial application is limited due to their susceptibility to abiotic factors. To overcome these bottlenecks, a hidden ecological role played by entomopathogenic bacteria as endophytes was sought. The control of pests by establishment of potential entomopathogenic bacteria as an endophyte is an alternative method of pest management that may contribute to reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides. Results Present study describes the colonization of green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged potential native Bacillus thuringiensis strain VKK-BB2 (BtVKK-BB2) in brinjal plants. Seeds and seedlings of brinjal were inoculated with gfp-tagged BtVKK-BB2 cells through seed treatment, soil drenching and foliar spray. After inoculation gfp-tagged bacterium could be re-isolated from all parts of the plant. Presence of bacteria within the leaves was confirmed by amplification of gfp and cry gene in the re-isolated Bt colonies from brinjal leaves and shoot. Leaves taken from the BtVKK-BB2 colonized plants were able to cause mortality when fed to neonates of Leucinodes orbonalis. Conclusions Establishment of native Bt strain as endophytes in plants, accompanied by the production of Cry proteins opens new horizons for the development of a novel pest-resistant crops which could be an alternative to Bt transgenic crops. However, inoculation of Bt through seed and foliar spray has to be further explored against larval herbivores especially internal borers to enhance its biocontrol potential through endophytic mediation which may open a novel set of strategies to control the insect pests in a sustainable way. Background: Management of difficult airway remains a cornerstone of anesthesiology requiring constant probe into newer devices challenging set gold standards. Hence, we compared the effectiveness of intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA) with flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) in anticipated difficult airway. Aims: The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate ILMA and FOB for tracheal intubation in patients with anticipated difficult airway. Settings and Design: The study design involves comparative randomized study. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia with anticipated difficult airway (Modified Mallampati Class III/Wilson's Score 6-7) were divided into Group I (ILMA) and Group F (FOB). Primary outcomes, i.e., ease of intubation (number and duration of attempts) and success rate; and secondary outcomes, i.e., hemodynamic parameters and adverse events were noted. Results: Both the groups were comparable in age, gender distribution, body mass index, and type of surgery. The number of attempts required and hemodynamics changes were similar in both groups. ILMA required lesser time, i.e., 59.76 s versus FOB, i.e., 109.88 s in the first attempt (DA1) and 62.67 s for Group I versus 120.86 s for Group F in the second attempt (DA2), being statistically significant. ILMA showed higher adverse event rate versus FOB; however, the difference was statistically insignificant. Conclusions: ILMA is an effective alternative to FOB in patients with anticipated difficult airway with respect to ease of intubation, with similar hemodynamic stability, success rate, and adverse events. Saline soda lakes are of immense ecological value as they niche some of the most exclusive haloalkaliphilic communities dominated by bacterial and archaeal domains, with few eukaryotic algal representatives. A handful reports describe Picocystis as a key primary producer with great production rates in extremely saline alkaline habitats. An extremely haloalkaliphilic picoalgal strain, Picocystis salinarum SLJS6 isolated from hypersaline soda lake Sambhar, Rajasthan, India, grew robustly in an enriched soda lake medium containing mainly Na2CO3, 50 g/l; NaHCO3, 50 g/l, NaCl, 50 g/l (salinity ≈150‰) at pH 10. Aflatoxin B1 is a carcinogenic and mutagenic mycotoxin mainly produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, and prevalent in food and feed. Microbial degradation is a promising strategy which can be performed in mild and environmental friendly condition. This work is a step towards identifying the enzyme responsible for biodegradation of AFB1 by P. putida. Experiments were performed with P. putida lysate and compared with commercial lipase to see the degradation efficiency and the temperature stability. The cell free lysate of P. putida efficiently degraded AFB1 in a range of temperature from 20 to 90 °C. The lysate is thermostable and could retain its activity on pre-incubation up to 90 °C. Highest rate of degradation was observed at 70 °C. These observations show that the P. putida lysate is not only stable at higher temperatures but its enzymatic activity increases after incubation. Similarly, the commercial lipase degraded AFB1 efficiently. However, both, the P. putida lysate and lipase ceased degradation in presence of a lipase inhibitor, HgCl2. The Hill function accurately predicted enzyme activity at various times and temperatures. Like lipase, the lysate also hydrolyses the p-nitrophenyl palmitate to p-nitrophenol. Kinetic parameters such as Vmax, Km and n values are good measures to characterize the lysate response with respect to changing paranitro phenyl palmitate levels. The substrate specificity test of lipase showed linear correlation between the absorbance at 410 nm vs amount of product paranitro phenol. The value of Km, Vmax and n are 0.62 mM, 355.7 μmol min−1 and 1.29, respectively. The lipase gene presence in P. putida was confirmed using PCR technique. These observations indicate that the main enzyme responsible for AFB1 degradation by P. putida is lipase. Thus, lipase as a multifunctional biocatalyst provides a promising future for a variety of industries and may also help to ensure the food safety by degrading the mycotoxins.

Agriculture has long been the cornerstone of human civilization, providing sustenance and livelihoods for millennia. However, as the global population continues to burgeon, agriculture faces mounting challenges. Soil degradation, nutrient depletion, environmental pollution, and the need for sustainable farming practices are among the pressing issues that require innovative solutions. In this context, nano-biofertilizers have emerged as a groundbreaking technological advancement with the potential to reshape modern agriculture. nano-biofertilizers are innovative agricultural products that leverage the combined principles of nanotechnology and biotechnology to enhance nutrient uptake by plants, improve soil health, and promote sustainable farming practices. These specialized fertilizers consist of nanoscale materials and beneficial microorganisms. These fertilizers are eco-friendly and cost-effective and have shown promising results in various crop plants. In this review, we discuss the recent advances in the development of eco-friendly nano-biofertilizers along with an overview of the various types of nano-biofertilizers, their formulation, synthesis, and mode of application for next-generation agriculture. The importance of the interaction between nanoparticles and bacterial species and its impact on the effectiveness of nano-biofertilizers has also been discussed along with the potential benefits, challenges, and future perspectives of using eco-friendly nano-biofertilizers for sustainable agriculture, ensuring a greener and healthier future for generations to come.

A study was conducted in 2021 to measure the level of satisfaction of farmers towards para-veterinary services in four districts of India, namely Mathura, Hisar, Jaipur, and Ahmadnagar of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra, respectively, using an exclusive 5-point Likert type scale. A total of 160 dairy farmers were surveyed under the random sampling method of investigation. In this study, ordered logistic regression was used to determine the predictors of satisfaction towards the delivery of animal health services to farmers. When the cause-effect relationship was analyzed, it was found that education, herd size, and annual income were negatively associated with satisfaction towards para-veterinary services. Comparative analysis of weighted mean scores for satisfaction revealed that dairy farmers were moderately satisfied with para-veterinary services in dimensions of behavioural aspects and, the cost of rendered service. When overall satisfaction of farmers towards para-veterinary services was analyzed, it was found that 44.38% of farmers were highly satisfied (having scale value of 0.42 and above on 0 to 1 point scale), followed by 32.50% respondents having a moderate level of satisfaction (value of 0.29-0.41). Para-vets need to put more effort in satisfying farmers vis-à-vis roles associated with extension and advisory services and, animal welfare aspects. Quality of service is the major factor affecting the satisfaction of the clientele. Thus, assessing the satisfaction of farmers towards para-veterinary services could be helpful in delivery of competent and efficient minor veterinary services at farmer’s door-step.

Background: A woman is highly vulnerable to anxiety and stress during her pregnancy causing negative effect in somatic and psychological forms like Intrauterine growth restriction, low birth weight and preterm birth in child. Maternal anxiety not only leads to adverse effect on pregnancy outcome but also decreases maternal competence in childcare. Aims/Objectives: To determine the prevalence of antenatal anxiety among women attending Ashok Nagar UHC and identify the associated risk factors. Methodology: A cross sectional study was done for 3 months in 320 antenatal women attending antenatal clinic at Ashok Nagar UHC. Data collection was done using a pre designed and pre tested questionnaire. Results: The prevalence of antenatal anxiety was 31.2%. Among them 30% had mild to moderate anxiety and only 1.2% had severe anxiety. Prevalence of anxiety was higher in younger women and with lower literacy status. Conclusion: Antenatal anxiety is of major public health importance but its effect on mother is not considered to be a serious issue in the society. There is a need for regular antenatal screening, assessment and treatment of antenatal anxiety.

Background: The perception about what constitutes a pleasing smile varies from person to person. The problem of crooked teeth may not be perceived as an actual need for treatment by some, and may differ not only on an individual basis, but also from a geographic perspective. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess if orthodontic treatment needs correlated with the actual self-perception and desire for orthodontic treatment in a rural population and was there an influence of gender and age. Materials and Methods: The study population included 495 older adolescents and younger adults between the age group of 16–24 years, randomly selected from villages in Dehradun. They were asked about their desire for orthodontic treatment and evaluated through the esthetic component of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN-AC) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Bivariate analyses using the Chi-square test were performed (SPSS software [version 17.0]) to test the influence of age and gender on desired, perceived, and normative needs. Associations between the different needs were tested using both simple and multiple logistic regression analysis. P < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: Approximately 48.1% of the study population showed a desire for orthodontic treatment for their teeth. For perceived needs assessed through IOTN-AC, 11.91% indicated a definite need for orthodontic treatment. The DAI scores estimated the normative treatment needs with 25.86% indicating a mandatory need for orthodontic treatment. Gender and age differences influenced desired need (P = 0.017; P = 0.014) but had no relation with perceived (P = 0.269; P = 0.058) or normatively determined orthodontic treatment needs (P = 0.093; P = 0.087). Conclusion: Statistically significant association was observed between the normative needs and desire for orthodontic treatment. Gender and age differences influenced desired needs only.

INTRODUCTION: Every year millions of women around the world suffer from pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum complication. Approximately 810 women die every day worldwide from preventable causes related to pregnancy and delivery. The concept of severe acute maternal morbidity or near miss was aptly developed for the present health-care system. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined “near-miss” as a woman, who is close to death, survives a complication that occurred during pregnancy, delivery, or up to 42 days after the termination of her pregnancy. The important causes of maternal mortality and morbidity have been summarized as the three delays. These delays have been identified to understand the gap in access to adequate obstetric management. Delays in access to quality care have been identified as one of the important determinants of preventable maternal death. The present study was planned to assess the “three delay model” leading to the occurrence of severe maternal outcome (SMO) in two tertiary care hospitals of Belagavi, Karnataka, as proposed by the WHO near-miss approach. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to study the “three delay model” leading to maternal morbidity and mortality in two tertiary care hospitals of Belagavi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two major tertiary care hospitals of Belagavi, namely KLE Dr Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital and Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital for a duration of 1 year among antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum mothers experiencing SMO. A sample of 200 was calculated based on the prevalence of previous maternal near-miss (MNM) incidence ratio. To assess the MNM cases, “Modified Facility Based MNM Review Form” was used. RESULTS: Out of 200 MNM cases, 145 (72.5%) subjects belonged to the age group of 21–30 years and 17 (8.5%) of the women were aged ≥31 years. The mean ± standard deviation age of the study participant was 25.0 ± 4.45 years. Based on the obstetric profile of the study subject, it was noted that 139 (69.5%) participants had presented to the study hospitals as unbooked cases and 93 (46.5%) were primigravida. Majority (160, 80.0%) of the MNM women had presented as referred cases. The MNM incidence ratio in the present study was recorded as 12.05/1000 live births with a MNM: maternal death ratio of 3.3:1. All types of delays were noted among the study participant in our study. Type I delay that consisted of lack of awareness and resources was seen in 134 (67.0%) MNM cases, followed by 130 (65.0%) experiencing Type II delay comprising logistics delay between home and health-care facility and in between the health facilities along with lack of communication network and the third type of delay being observed at the referring health facility in all the referred study participant. Assessment of association between maternal outcome and the “3 delay model” by use of logistic regression analysis suggested that women who faced any kind of delay (I, II, and III) during their pregnancy were more likely to end up with poor maternal outcomes. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION: The present study aimed to assess the delays that lead to poor maternal outcomes. The current study revealed the deficiencies that need to be tackled and taken care of on an urgent basis. Hence, there must be a multidisciplinary approach to manage the high-risk maternal cases for timely intervention and management and reduce the burden of maternal morbidity and mortality on a global scale.

Background: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is minimally invasive procedure for the evaluation of mediastinal mass and lymph nodes. Aim: This study was conducted as an internal audit to determine diagnostic accuracy, false-negative rate of a costly, invasive procedure EBUS-TBNA performed under conscious sedation or deep/general anesthesia. Methods: Forty-nine patients who underwent EBUS-TBNA procedure at our institute were included in this retrospective study. Sensitivity, diagnostic accuracy, and negative predictive values were calculated considering clinical radiological assessment till 6 months as gold standard. Results: Forty-nine patients (27 females and 22 males) with mean age of 47.88 years underwent EBUS-TBNA during a period of 8 months. The most common indication was extrathoracic malignancy metastasis in 26 (53.1%) patients. EBUS-TBNA was performed for diagnosing malignancy lung in 11 patients, granulomatous disease in 8 patients, and mediastinal mass in 4 patients. A total of 74 nodes were sampled in 49 patients. Adequate samples were obtained in 46 patients (93.9%). Diagnostic accuracy was overall 91.8%. There were no procedure-related complications or mortality noted in any patient. Out of 17 negative cases, false negatives were 4, and negative-predictive value was 76.5%. The diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and negative predictive value were higher in procedures performed under deep sedation/general anesthesia. Conclusion: Diagnosing extrathoracic malignancy metastasis and malignancy lung are major indications for the EBUS-TBNA procedure at our institute. The diagnostic accuracy overall was 91.8%. The negative-predictive value, diagnostic accuracy, and sensitivity were higher for procedures performed under deep sedation/general anesthesia versus conscious sedation.

Background: Healthcare workers, especially the young medical students, can play a significant role in providing the recommendations to prevent or manage cervical cancer (CC) caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). However, it is often observed that the awareness about the knowledge of CC and HPV is limited in the medical students, who are part of the front-line support for managing the patients. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and acceptance of CC and HPV vaccine among medical students. Method: ology: In this cross-sectional study, 297 medical students of the age group >18 years were included. Their knowledge regarding cervical cancer (risk factors, screening and prevention) was explored through a questionnaire. The acceptability of HPV vaccine among girls was also assessed. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test and regression method were used to analyze the study data with p 0.0001). Proportion of subjects willing for vaccination in future was high among females (p > 0.0001). Age (p = 0.047) and education (p > 0.0001) were the only variables significant after application of logistic regression model. Conclusion: The study suggests that the overall awareness and knowledge about CC, HPV and HPV vaccination was high among college students and associated with sex, education and also family background. This study inferred that a vast majority of subjects were fairly aware of CC, but the knowledge of risk factors and prevention techniques was lacking.
