Deep learning (DL) enables deep neural networks (DNNs) to automatically learn complex tasks or rules from given examples without instructions or guiding principles. As we do not engineer DNNs' functions, it is extremely difficult to diagnose their decisions, and multiple lines of studies proposed to explain principles of DNNs/DL operations. Notably, one line of studies suggests that DNNs may learn concepts, the high level features recognizable to humans. Thus, we hypothesized that DNNs develop abstract codes, not necessarily recognizable to humans, which can be used to augment DNNs' decision-making. To address this hypothesis, we combined foundation segmentation models and unsupervised learning to extract internal codes and identify potential use of abstract codes to make DL's decision-making more reliable and safer., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables and Appendix

uPDFevolv2 is a software package designed for evolving collinear and Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities using the DGLAP evolution equation. We study monolayer WSe2 using ultrafast electron diffraction. We introduce an approach to quantitatively extract atomic-site-specific information, providing an element-specific view of incoherent atomic vibrations following femtosecond excitation. Via differences between W and Se vibrations, we identify stages in the nonthermal evolution of the lattice. Combined with a calculated phonon dispersion, this element specificity enables us to identify a long-lasting overpopulation of specific optical phonons, and to interpret the stages as energy transfer processes between specific phonon groups. The role of soft gluons in inclusive collinear parton densities as well as in Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities is discussed. Applying the Parton-Branching (PBM) method, the so-called non-perturbative Sudakov form factor could be identified with the integration range $z \to 1$, which is neglected in collinear parton shower approaches. The importance of soft gluons could be shown by investigating the transverse momentum spectrum of Drell-Yan lepton pairs, leading to a width of the intrinsic-$k_T$ distribution which is independent on $\sqrt{s}$ , in contrast to what is observed in parton shower approaches. The reason for this behavior is traced back to the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor. The role of soft gluons for observable hadron spectra is discussed and shown to be negligible. The internal motion of partons inside hadrons has been studied through its impact on very low transverse momentum spectra of Drell-Yan (DY) pairs created in hadron-hadron collisions. We study DY production at next-to-leading order using the Parton Branching (PB) method which describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. The main focus is on studying the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution (intrinsic-$k_T$) as a function of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s$. While collinear parton shower Monte Carlo event generators require intrinsic transverse momentum distributions strongly dependent on $\sqrt s$, this is not the case for the PB method. We perform a detailed study of the impact of soft parton emissions. We show that by requiring a minimal transverse momentum, $q_0$, of a radiated parton, a dependence of the width of the intrinsic-$k_T$ distribution as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ is observed. The armed invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has adversely affected the relations between Russia and Western countries. Among other aspects, it has put scientific cooperation and collaboration into question and changed the scientific landscape significantly. Cooperation between some Western institutions and their Russian and Belarusian partners were put on hold after February 24, 2022. The CERN Council decided at its meeting in December 2023 to terminate cooperation agreements with Russia and Belarus that date back a decade. CERN is an international institution with UN observer status, and has so far played a role in international cooperation which was independent of national political strategies. We argue that the Science4Peace idea still has a great value and scientific collaboration between scientists must continue, since fundamental science is by its nature an international discipline. A ban of scientists participating in international cooperation and collaboration is against the traditions, requirements and understanding of science. We call for measures to reactivate the peaceful cooperation of individual scientists on fundamental research in order to stimulate international cooperation for a more peaceful world in the future. Specifically, we plead for finding ways to continue this cooperation through international organizations, such as CERN and JINR.

The Parton Branching (PB) method describes the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions, covering all kinematic regions from small to large transverse momenta kT. The small kT-region is very sensitive both to the contribution of the intrinsic motion of partons (intrinsic kT) and to the resummation of soft gluons taken into account by the PB TMD evolution equations. We study the role of soft-gluon emissions in TMD as well as integrated parton distributions. We perform a detailed investigation of the PB TMD methodology at next-to-leading order (NLO) in Drell-Yan (DY) production for low transverse momenta. We present the extraction of the nonperturbative "intrinsic-kT" distribution from recent measurements of DY transverse momentum distributions at the LHC across a wide range in DY masses, including a detailed treatment of statistical, correlated and uncorrelated uncertainties. Deep learning models loosely mimic bottom-up signal pathways from low-order sensory areas to high-order cognitive areas. After training, DL models can outperform humans on some domain-specific tasks, but their decision-making process has been known to be easily disrupted. Since the human brain consists of multiple functional areas highly connected to one another and relies on intricate interplays between bottom-up and top-down (from high-order to low-order areas) processing, we hypothesize that incorporating top-down signal processing may make DL models more robust. To address this hypothesis, we propose a certification process mimicking selective attention and test if it could make DL models more robust. Our empirical evaluations suggest that this newly proposed certification can improve DL models' accuracy and help us build safety measures to alleviate their vulnerabilities with both artificial and natural adversarial examples., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 table and Append/Supplementary materials. While sanctions in political and economic areas are now part of the standard repertoire of Western countries (not always endorsed by UN mandates), sanctions in science and culture in general are new. Historically, fundamental research as conducted at international research centers such as CERN has long been seen as a driver for peace, and the Science4Peace idea has been celebrated for decades. However, much changed with the war against Ukraine, and most Western science organizations put scientific cooperation with Russia and Belarus on hold immediately after the start of the war in 2022. In addition, common publications and participation in conferences were banned by some institutions, going against the ideal of free scientific exchange and communication. These and other points were the topics of an international virtual panel discussion organized by the Science4Peace Forum together with the "Natural Scientists Initiative - Responsibility for Peace and Sustainability" (NatWiss e.V.) in Germany and the journal "Wissenschaft und Frieden" (W&F) (see the Figure). Fellows from the Hamburg Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), scientists collaborating with the large physics research institutes DESY and CERN, as well as from climate and futures researchers were represented on the panel. In this Dossier we document the panel discussion, and give additional perspectives. The authors of the individual sections present their personal reflections, which should not be taken as implying that they are endorsed by the Science4Peace Forum or any other organizations. The role of soft (non-perturbative) gluons in collinear parton densities and parton shower event generators is investigated with the Parton Branching method as a solution of the DGLAP evolution equations. It is found that soft gluons play a significant role. Within the Parton Branching frame, the Sudakov form factor can be split into a perturbative and non-perturbative part. The non-perturbative part can be calculated analytically under certain conditions. It is shown that the inclusion of soft (non-perturbative) gluons in the parton density evolution is essential for the proper cancellation of divergent terms. It is argued that the non-perturbative part of the Sudakov form factor has its correspondence in Transverse Momentum Dependent parton distributions. Within the Parton Branching approach, this non-perturbative Sudakov form factor is constrained by fits of inclusive, collinear parton densities. We show that the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor and soft gluon emissions are essential for inclusive distributions (collinear parton densities and Drell-Yan transverse momentum spectra). We also show by using Parton Branching TMD parton shower, that the effect of soft gluons plays essentially no role in final state hadron spectra and jets., Comment: Text significantly updated

We discuss our recent results on azimuthal distributions in vector boson + jets and multi-jet production at the LHC, obtained from the matching of next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative matrix elements with transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton branching. We provide an overview of the xFitter open-source software package, review the general capabilities of the program, and highlight applications relevant to the Snowmass study. An updated version of the program (2.2.0) is available on CERN GitLab, a and this has been updated to a C++ codebase with enhanced and extended features. We also discuss some of the ongoing and future code developments that may be useful for precision studies. We survey recent analyses performed by the xFitter developers' team including: W and Z production, photon PDFs, Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry studies, resummation of small-x contributions, heavy quark production, constraints on the strange PDF, determination of the pion PDF, and determination of the pion Fragmentation Functions. Finally, we briefly summarize selected applications of xFitter in the literature. The xFitter program is a versatile, flexible, modular, and comprehensive tool that can provide impact studies for possible future facilities. The conformation of molecules on surfaces is decisive for their functionality. For the case of the endofullerene paramagnet Sc2TbN@C80 the conformation is linked to an electric and a magnetic dipole moment. Therefore a workfunction change of a substrate with adsorbed molecules, qualifies the system to be magnetoelectric. One monolayer of Sc2TbN@C80 has been studied on h-BN/Ni(111). The molecules assume a hexagonally close packed lattice aligned with the substrate high symmetry directions. The structure is incommensurate and arranges at a periodicity of about 4.3x4.3 substrate unit cells. At low temperatures a (2 x 2) superstructure is observed. Angular resolved valence band photoemission spectroscopy shows a temperature induced 0.3 eV shift on the C80 molecular orbitals to lower binding energies that is parallel to a workfunction increase. From comparison of the molecular orbital angular photoemission intensity distributions it is conjectured that the molecules undergo a change in conformation between 30 and 300 K. This phase transition is centred at 125 K as observed with high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that shows the core levels of the atomic species on the molecules to shift parallel to the workfunction. The temperature dependence of the workfunction can be described with a two level model that accounts for the disordering with an excitation energy of 60 meV into a highly degenerate ensemble. The experimental findings are backed by density functional theory calculations for the diamagnetic sibling of Sc2TbN@C80 : Sc2YN@C80 that rationalize the incommensurate structure, show a permanent dipole moment of Sc2YN@C80 and a relation between the workfunction and the orientation of the endohedral cluster., Comment: 7 pages 6 figures

Azimuthal correlations in Z+jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton - Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $\Delta\phi$ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta ${\cal O}(100)$ GeV, while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${\cal O}(1000)$ GeV. The different patterns of Z+jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential {\it factorization - breaking} effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $\Delta\phi$ for Z+jet - and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale. During the DESY summer student program 2021, young scientists from more than 13 different countries worked together, connecting from remote, to provide computer codes within the Rivet framework for 19 HERA measurements. Most of these measurements were originally available within the HZTool package, but no longer accessible for modern analysis packages such as Rivet. Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distributions are a very powerful concept for the description of low and high transverse momentum effects in high energy collisions. The Parton Branching (PB) method provides TMD distributions which can be used in parton shower simulations, as already implemented in \cascade\ Monte Carlo event generator. This report gives a description of the work done during the DESY summer student program 2021, young scientists from very different time zones connecting from remote twice a day for 8 weeks, to develop a method, PS2TMD, that allows to determine effective TMDs from the standard Monte Carlo parton showers. This method is validated and implemented to successfully reconstruct the PB-TMDs with different configuration settings. We also discuss kinematic shifts in longitudinal momentum distributions from initial state showering and point out the sizable influence of different reconstruction definitions on both collinear and transverse momentum PDFs. %the nonperturbative dependence on longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom is fully coupled., Comment: Part of the DESY summer student program 2021

The azimuthal correlation, $\Delta \phi_{12}$, of high transverse momentum jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV is studied by applying PB-TMD distributions to NLO calculations via MCatNLO together with the PB-TMD parton shower. A very good description of the cross section as a function of $\Delta \phi_{12}$ is observed. In the back-to-back region of $\Delta \phi_{12} \to \pi$, a very good agreement is observed with the PB-TMD Set 2 distributions while significant deviations are obtained with the PB-TMD Set 1 distributions. Set 1 uses the evolution scale while Set 2 uses transverse momentum as an argument in $\alpha_s$, and the above observation therefore confirms the importance of an appropriate soft-gluon coupling in angular ordered parton evolution. The total uncertainties of the predictions are dominated by the scale uncertainties of the matrix element, while the uncertainties coming from the PB-TMDs and the corresponding PB-TMD shower are very small. The $\Delta \phi_{12}$ measurements are also compared with predictions using MCatNLO together PYTHIA8, illustrating the importance of details of the parton shower evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 8 Figures

The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Transfer learning (TL) leverages previously obtained knowledge to learn new tasks efficiently and has been used to train deep learning (DL) models with limited amount of data. When TL is applied to DL, pretrained (teacher) models are fine-tuned to build domain specific (student) models. This fine-tuning relies on the fact that DL model can be decomposed to classifiers and feature extractors, and a line of studies showed that the same feature extractors can be used to train classifiers on multiple tasks. Furthermore, recent studies proposed multiple algorithms that can fine-tune teacher models' feature extractors to train student models more efficiently. We note that regardless of the fine-tuning of feature extractors, the classifiers of student models are trained with final outputs of feature extractors (i.e., the outputs of penultimate layers). However, a recent study suggested that feature maps in ResNets across layers could be functionally equivalent, raising the possibility that feature maps inside the feature extractors can also be used to train student models' classifiers. Inspired by this study, we tested if feature maps in the hidden layers of the teacher models can be used to improve the student models' accuracy (i.e., TL's efficiency). Specifically, we developed 'adaptive transfer learning (ATL)', which can choose an optimal set of feature maps for TL, and tested it in the few-shot learning setting. Our empirical evaluations suggest that ATL can help DL models learn more efficiently, especially when available examples are limited., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We reconsider the associated $Z$ boson and charm or beauty jet production at the LHC with paying special attention to the formation dynamics of heavy jets. Two different approaches are studied: first one, where heavy quarks are produced in the hard scattering subprocesses, implemented in the Monte-Carlo generator PEGASUS, and another scenario, where the hard scattering is calculated at NLO with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and TMD parton shower is included (implemented in the Monte-Carlo generator CASCADE3). We compare the predictions obtained in both schemes with latest experimental data for associated $Z + b$ production cross sections and the relative production rate $\sigma(Z + c)/\sigma(Z + b)$ collected by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at $\sqrt s = 13$~TeV. We introduce two kinematic observables (denoted as $z_b$ and $p_T^{\rm rel}$) which can be used to discriminate the heavy jet production mechanisms. Using these variables we trace the shape of the simulated $b$-jet events and recommend that these observables be taken into consideration in the forthcoming experimental analyses., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm OmniFold, which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared to calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as well as Monte Carlo event generators. The calculations of $Z + b{\bar b}$ tagged jet production performed in the four- and five-flavour schemes allow for detailed comparison of the heavy flavour structure of collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions as well as for detailed investigations of heavy quarks radiated during the initial state parton shower cascade. We have determined the first set of collinear and TMD parton distributions in the four-flavour scheme with NLO DGLAP splitting functions within the Parton-Branching (PB) approach. The four- and five-flavour PB-TMD distributions were used to calculate $Z + b{\bar b}$ tagged jet production at LHC energies and very good agreement with measurements obtained at $\sqrt{s} = 8, 13 $ TeV by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations is observed. The different configurations of the hard process in the four- and five-flavour schemes allow for a detailed investigation of the performance of heavy flavor collinear and TMD parton distributions and the corresponding initial TMD parton shower, giving confidence in the evolution of the PB-TMD parton densities as well as in the PB-TMD parton shower.

We present a complete set of transverse momentum dependent and collinear parton densities including the photon over a wide phase space. The photon density appears when evolving parton distributions with QED corrections. The photons are produced by perturbative radiation using the Parton Branching method. The QCD partons are constrained by a fit to HERA data. The field of few-shot learning has made remarkable strides in developing powerful models that can operate in the small data regime. Nearly all of these methods assume every unlabeled instance encountered will belong to a handful of known classes for which one has examples. This can be problematic for real-world use cases where one routinely finds 'none-of-the-above' examples. In this paper we describe this challenge of identifying what we term 'out-of-support' (OOS) examples. We describe how this problem is subtly different from out-of-distribution detection and describe a new method of identifying OOS examples within the Prototypical Networks framework using a fixed point which we call the generic representation. We show that our method outperforms other existing approaches in the literature as well as other approaches that we propose in this paper. Finally, we investigate how the use of such a generic point affects the geometry of a model's feature space., Comment: 15 pages
