The conventional terahertz radar suffers from limited operation range for long-distance, noncooperative target detection due to the low transmitter power and atmospheric attenuation effect, both of which pose a hindrance in meeting the requirements of warning detection applications. To improve the radar detection capability, this paper studies an ultrasensitive target detection method based on single-photon detectors to replace traditional radar receivers. The method is expected to considerably expand the operation range of terahertz radars. First, the statistical law of the number of echo photons of a terahertz single-photon radar system is analyzed, and the echo characteristics of the target are expounded from a microscopic perspective. Furthermore, a terahertz single-photon target detection model, incorporating the characteristics of a quantum capacitor detector, is established. In addition, the mathematical expression of the target detection performance is derived, and the performance is evaluated via simulations. Further, a target detection performance curve is obtained. Finally, a time-resolved terahertz photon-counting mechanism experiment is performed, wherein we realize high-precision ranging by counting echo pulses. This work can provide support for the research and development of ultrasensitive target detection technologies and single-photon radar systems in the terahertz band.

Abstract Background Diabetes mellitus is generally accompanied by dyslipidaemia, but inconsistent relationships between lipid profiles and diabetes are noted. Moreover, genetic variations in insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphisms at angiotensin-converting enzyme gene (ACE) and T/C polymorphisms in the angiotensin type 1 receptor gene (AGTR1) are related to diabetes and lipid levels, but the associations are controversial. Thus, the current research aimed to explore the effects of ACE I/D, AGTR1 rs5182 and diabetes mellitus on serum lipid profiles in 385 Chinese participants with an average age of 75.01 years. Methods The ACE I/D variant was identified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, whereas the AGTR1 rs5182 polymorphism was identified using the PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method and verified with DNA sequencing. Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), apolipoprotein A (ApoA), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were measured using routine methods, and the lipid ratios were calculated. Results ACE I/D, but not AGTR1 rs5182, was a predictor of TG/HDL-C for the whole study population. Both ACE I/D and AGTR1 rs5182 were predictors of HDL-C and LDL-C levels in females but not in males. Moreover, in females, diabetes mellitus and ACE I/D were identified as predictors of TG and TG/HDL-C, whereas AGTR1 rs5182 and diabetes mellitus were predictors of TG/HDL-C. Moreover, diabetes mellitus and the combination of ACE I/D and AGTR1 rs5182 variations were predictors of TG and TG/HDL-C exclusively in females. Conclusions The results demonstrated the potential for gender-dependent interactions of ACE I/D, AGTR1 rs5182, and diabetes on lipid profiles. These findings may serve as an additional explanation for the inconsistent changes of blood lipids in individuals with diabetes mellitus, thereby offering a novel perspective for the clinical management of blood lipid levels in diabetic patients.

Esophageal cancer ranks among the most prevalent malignant tumors globally. The prognosis for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate below 20 % due to limited advances in therapy. Ferroptosis, a novel form of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-driven regulated cell death (RCD), shows significant promise in cancer treatment. Berbamine (BBM), a natural bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid derived from Berberis amurensis, exhibits anti-tumor effects against various cancers, yet its impact on esophageal cancer remains to be elucidated. This study aimed to explore the role of BBM in inducing ferroptosis in the treatment of esophageal cancer, focusing on its molecular mechanisms. Gene set enrichment analysis(GSEA) analysis highlighted the potential of BBM as an anti-cancer agent through ferroptosis induction. We found that BBM inhibited growth and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in esophageal cancer cell lines, promoting Fe accumulation, ROS, and malondialdehyde (MDA) production, thereby triggering cell death. These suppressive effects were successfully reversed by Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1). Mechanistically, BBM decreased deubiquitination enzyme USP51 levels, leading to ubiquitin degradation and glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4) instability, and it stimulated ferroptosis. The Overexpression of USP51 mitigated the downregulation of GPX4 induced by BBM.BBM significantly inhibited tumor xenograft growth in nude mice. This discovery positions BBM as a promising therapeutic candidate for the treatment of esophageal cancer.

Abstract Background Aimed to assess clinical effect of three-port inflatable robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in mediastinal tumor resection by comparing results of the robot group with the video group. Methods Retrospectively analyze 179 patients diagnosed with anterior mediastinal tumor from May 2017 to August 2021. Two groups were divided according to the surgical approach, including 92 cases in the RATS group and 87 cases in the VATS group. The results were analyzed between two groups with variables of age, sex, BMI, tumor size, and diagnosis. Perioperative clinical data was gathered to compare. Result There were no significant differences between the 2 groups with regards to demographic data and clinical features. There were no significant differences inoperative time and duration of chest tube via RATS vs. VATS. The intraoperative blood loss was statistically significantly different among the RATS and VATS groups (75.9 ± 39.6 vs. 97.4 ± 35.8 ml p = 0.042). The postoperative stay of patients in RATS group were significantly shorter than that in VATS group (2.3 ± 1.0 vs. 3.4 ± 1.4 day p = 0.035), Conclusion Three-port inflatable robot-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for mediastinal tumor is feasible and reliable it is more advantageous, and it provides the surgeon with advice on treatment choice.

Abstract Preferential flow (PF) processes are governed by subsurface soil structures at various scales. Still, model validation and mechanistic understanding of PF are very lacking. We hypothesize that PF at hillslope and larger scales cannot be described and quantified when neglecting small‐scaled spatially variable processes and simplifying the model dimensionality. The objective was to learn from comparing simulation results of multidimensional (1D, 2D, and 3D) and multiscale (pedon, catena, and catchment) modeling approaches with comprehensive datasets, and so as to evaluate PF simulations based on the Richards’ equation (solved by the HYDRUS software). Results showed limited alignment between 1D simulations and soil moisture data, mainly affected by vertical changes in porosity, permeability, and precipitation features. 2D and 3D simulations outperformed 1D models. 3D simulations provided satisfactory description of PF dynamics at the pedon scale, considering accurate representations of soil and bedrock structures for three dimensions (vertical, horizontal, and surrounding area). In 2D simulations at the pedon scale, models incorporating dual‐porosity and anisotropy of soils yielded more accurate predictions of water dynamics than single‐porosity and isotropic models. Furthermore, the application of 2D simulation at the catena scale identify PF pathways owing to the enhanced representation of the hydraulic connectivity between different locations along the slope. The results confirmed the significance of multidimensional and multiscale modeling approaches for PF simulations in hillslope hydrology. Considering the complexity and parameterization of 2D and 3D “bottom‐up” physically based models in representing spatial variability within and between soil profiles and/or underlying bedrock geology, the results contribute to creating a modeling framework applicable to identify the PF processes and thus their implications in managing water resources.

In neural prostheses, intensity modulation of a single channel (i.e., through a single stimulating electrode) has been achieved by increasing the magnitude or width of each stimulation pulse, which risks eliciting pain or paraesthesia; and by changing the stimulation rate, which leads to concurrent changes in perceived frequency. In this study, we sought to render a perception of tactile intensity and frequency independently, by means of temporal pulse train patterns of fixed magnitude, delivered non-invasively. Our psychophysical study exploits a previously discovered frequency coding mechanism, where the perceived frequency of stimulus pulses grouped into periodic bursts depends on the duration of the inter-burst interval, rather than the mean pulse rate or periodicity. When electrical stimulus pulses were organised into bursts, perceived intensity was influenced by the number of pulses within a burst, while perceived frequency was determined by the time between the end of one burst envelope and the start of the next. The perceived amplitude was modulated by 1.6× while perceived frequency was varied independently by 2× within the tested range (20–40 Hz). Thus, the sensation of intensity might be controlled independently from frequency through a single stimulation channel without having to vary the injected electrical current. This can form the basis for improving strategies in delivering more complex and natural sensations for prosthetic hand users.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the feasibility and safety of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) for resecting benign tumors of the cervicothoracic junction. Between 2017 and 2021, a total of 54 patients with benign cervicothoracic junction tumors were included. Among them, 46 underwent RATS while 8 underwent open surgery. Using a propensity score based on four variables (age, sex, comorbidity, and tumor size). The outcomes compared included short-term outcomes such as blood loss, as well as long-term outcomes including respiratory function and patients' postoperative health-related quality of life. No operative deaths occurred in this study. RATS was associated with less intraoperative blood loss (102 0.650, P 5 cm (mean ± SD = 0.768 ± 0.111, P = 0.028) and neurogenic tumors (mean ± SD = 0.702 ± 0.082, P

Invasive blood testing is the most used method for testing bilirubin levels. However, invasive blood testing must be carried out by professionally trained medical staff to avoid the risk of infection. Apart from being present in blood, direct bilirubin is excreted in human urine. Therefore, this study proposed a non-invasive method, using high collimation ultraviolet-light-emitting diodes (HC UV-LEDs) as the light source to design a miniaturized optomechanical device (MOD) for direct bilirubin detection in urine. The designed MOD was used to analyze different concentrations of direct bilirubin using its absorbance spectrum to achieve a non-invasive detection method. The HC UV-LEDs MOD proposed in this study offers the benefits of being non-invasive and providing a quantitative analysis of direct bilirubin.

In this article, to address the long-distance imaging problems, a novel forward-looking 3-D imaging method based on terahertz single-photon radar is presented. The imaging method is based on single-input and single-output architecture system and adopts a novel data-driven approach named scaling training. In the scaling training, by scaling the parameters of the long-distance scene to be imaged, a parameter scaling system is constructed, and then it is utilized to collect the training data to train the artificial neural network (ANN) model. Once the training is completed, 3-D image of the long-distance scene can be retrieved using the ANN model from solely the 1-D photon-counting histogram echo recorded by terahertz single-photon radar. On the basis, to further improve the imaging quality, the depth correction method is implemented. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

The two directly substituted pentazoles, N5NH2 and N5COOH, were designed to theoretically study the relationships between substituents, aromaticity and kinetic stability thereof. Analysis shows their kinetic stability order described by the energy separations between the highest occupied molecule orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecule orbital (LUMO), viz. HOMO-LUMO gap, is line with the aromaticity orders obtained from nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), harmonic oscillator measure of aromaticity (HOMA), Bird aromaticity index (I) and isochemical shielding surface (ICSS), which is N5NH2 > N5COOH. But this order is contrary to the heat stability order according to Ref [1] The inconsistency between heat stability and kinetic stability reveals the fact that stability of compounds is a complex character and different according to the compound property of the study. The consistency of kinetic stability order with the aromaticity orders described by NICS, NICSSZZ, HOMA, I and ICSS indicates these widely accepted methods for aromaticity estimating are reliable for the two given compounds. As for the effect on aromaticity of pentazole ring from substituent, electron-donating substituent have stronger effect than electron-withdrawing substituent.

Abstract Using 22‐year ground observations on meteorological variables, we conducted a statistical analysis to reveal fog characteristics at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (SPIA). Fog events were classified by fog types using an objective method. Two types of advection fogs are dominant in fog events at SPIA, followed by radiation fogs. Different fogs have evident annual and monthly variations in frequency. Advection fog mostly appear from February to April, while radiation fog is mainly between November and February. Six synoptic patterns associated with fogs were determine by a self‐organizing maps cluster method, two of which, namely ‘west of marine high pressure’ and ‘inverted trough’, are most favourable for the formation of advection fogs, whereas ‘bottom of weak cold high‐pressure’ is favourable for radiation fogs. The frequency of advection fog occurrence exhibits temporal fluctuations with distinct peaks occurring 2–3 h after sunset, around midnight, and 1–2 h before sunrise, while almost all radiation fog occur in the second half of the night, and favourable conditions for fog onset become more effective with the length of the night. Radiation fog exhibits a longer duration than advection fog and tends to result in lower visibility. The prevalent wind direction for the formation of advection fog is generally from the east to the southeast, whereas radiation fog is typically associated with westerly winds. The temperature and air pressure during the formation of both advection and radiation fogs follow a normal distribution in most seasons. More fog characteristics were categorized by fog types and seasons.

Alumina is considered as one of the most promising candidates for tritium permeation barrier. Coating preparation parameters such as the thickness and the surface coverage both affect the hydrogen isotope resistant performance of TPBs. Alumina coatings with thickness in the nanometric scale are considered in this work. Reduced thickness in the coatings leads to an improvement in the thermal conductivity and the reduction of mismatch problems with the substrate due to differences in the thermal expansion coefficients. Alumina coatings with different thickness were prepared on differentiated manufactured substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering with varying sputtering time. Deposited alumina layers are maximal 104.2 nm in thickness. Gas-driven permeation experiments have been performed to investigate the deuterium permeation behavior of the coating samples. It is noted that the alumina coating with only approximately 100 nm in thickness whose permeation reduction factor could achieve 1784 at 823 K and maintain its excellent performance at elevated temperatures, which indicates that the coating at nanometer scale with high surface coverage is capable of possessing extraordinary hydrogen permeation resistance property.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate an unsettled issue that whether T4 esophageal cancer could benefit from surgery. Methods Patients with T4N0-3M0 esophageal cancer from 2004 to 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were included in this study. Kaplan–Meier method, Cox proportional hazard regression, and propensity score matching (PSM) were used to compare overall survival (OS) between the surgery and no-surgery group. Utilizing observed wind speed and direction data from observation stations near the Taiwan Strait and ocean buoys, along with forecast data from the EC model, GRAPES_GFS model, and PanGu weather prediction model within the same period, RMSE, MAE, CC, and other parameters were calculated. To comparatively evaluate the forecasting performance of the PanGu weather prediction model on the sea surface wind field near the Taiwan Strait from 00:00 on 1 June 2023, to 23:00 on 31 May 2024. The PanGu weather prediction model is further divided into the ERA5 (PanGu) model driven by ERA5 initial fields and the GRAPES_GFS (PanGu) model driven by GRAPES_GFS initial fields. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) over a one-year evaluation period, for wind speed forecasts with lead times of 0 h to 120 h in the Taiwan Strait region, the overall forecasting skill of the PanGu weather prediction model is superior to that of the model forecasts; (2) different initial fields input into the PanGu weather prediction model lead to different final forecast results, with better initial field data corresponding to forecast results closer to observations, thus indicating the operational transferability of the PanGu model in smaller regions; (3) regarding forecasts of wind speed categories, the credibility of the results is high when the wind speed level is ≤7, and the PanGu weather prediction model performs better among similar forecasts; (4) although the EC model’s wind direction forecasts are closer to the observation field results, the PanGu weather forecasting model also provides relatively accurate and rapid forecasts of the main wind directions within a shorter time frame.

When underwater acoustic signals propagate to the water surface, the acoustic impedance difference between water and air leads to transverse microamplitude waves on the water surface. These waves carry vibration frequencies containing relevant information about the sound source. Radar systems detect the slight displacement of the target through the phase difference between the target echoes; hence, radar systems can be used to detect small displacement changes on the water surface, thereby obtaining the water-surface vibration signal and subsequently inverting the underwater sound source information. In this study, we first analyzed the attenuation characteristics of underwater sound propagation and the physical model of water-surface vibration. Building upon the radar echo model for detecting acoustic water-surface vibration, we proposed a wavelet-Kalman filter signal detection method through theoretical analysis. Lastly, experiments were conducted in the large-scale comprehensive anechoic pool and the Yellow Sea water using terahertz radar for acoustic water-surface micromotion signal detection. The results demonstrate the capability of the terahertz radar to successfully detect acoustic water-surface microvibrations. The proposed method effectively filters water-surface interference and radar phase noise and extracts vibration signals. For the first time, submicron vibration signals were detected under a secondary sea state, providing a foundation for water-space transmedia information transmission and underwater vehicle detection.

In view of the long process route of high-precision gear machining, a method of creep feed deep profile grinding of small-module gears was proposed. The experiments of creep feed deep profile grinding of small-module gears were carried out. The effects of different feed speeds on the grinding power, the workpiece grinding burn and the grinding wheel wear were analyzed. The wear process of grinding wheels was studied by replica method. The results show that the grinding power peak increases with the increase of feed speed. When the feed speed exceeds 150 mm/min, the grinding burns occur on the workpiece surface. Besides, the hardness of the grinding surface is significantly higher than that of the initial hardness, and the martensitic phase transformation occurs on the workpiece surface. As the depth from the grinding surface increases, the hardness values show a downward trend, and the depth of the hardness layer at the tooth bottom is smaller than that at the both sides of the tooth profile. The wear process of grinding wheels is divided into initial wear stage, stable wear stage and rapid wear stage. The material removal volume of stable wear stage is about 2 000 mm3. Excessive feed rate will cause severe wear of the grinding wheel.

In a companion paper, we present the first spatially resolved polarized image of Sagittarius A* on event horizon scales, captured using the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometric array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. Here we interpret this image using both simple analytic models and numerical general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations. The large spatially resolved linear polarization fraction (24%–28%, peaking at ∼40%) is the most stringent constraint on parameter space, disfavoring models that are too Faraday depolarized. Similar to our studies of M87*, polarimetric constraints reinforce a preference for GRMHD models with dynamically important magnetic fields. Although the spiral morphology of the polarization pattern is known to constrain the spin and inclination angle, the time-variable rotation measure (RM) of Sgr A* (equivalent to ≈46° ± 12° rotation at 228 GHz) limits its present utility as a constraint. If we attribute the RM to internal Faraday rotation, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be counterclockwise, contrary to inferences based on historical polarized flares, and no model satisfies all polarimetric and total intensity constraints. On the other hand, if we attribute the mean RM to an external Faraday screen, then the motion of accreting material is inferred to be clockwise, and one model passes all applied total intensity and polarimetric constraints: a model with strong magnetic fields, a spin parameter of 0.94, and an inclination of 150°. We discuss how future 345 GHz and dynamical imaging will mitigate our present uncertainties and provide additional constraints on the black hole and its accretion flow.

The Event Horizon Telescope observed the horizon-scale synchrotron emission region around the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in 2017. These observations revealed a bright, thick ring morphology with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μ as and modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry, consistent with the expected appearance of a black hole with mass M ≈ 4 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ . From these observations, we present the first resolved linear and circular polarimetric images of Sgr A*. The linear polarization images demonstrate that the emission ring is highly polarized, exhibiting a prominent spiral electric vector polarization angle pattern with a peak fractional polarization of ∼40% in the western portion of the ring. The circular polarization images feature a modestly (∼5%–10%) polarized dipole structure along the emission ring, with negative circular polarization in the western region and positive circular polarization in the eastern region, although our methods exhibit stronger disagreement than for linear polarization. We analyze the data using multiple independent imaging and modeling methods, each of which is validated using a standardized suite of synthetic data sets. While the detailed spatial distribution of the linear polarization along the ring remains uncertain owing to the intrinsic variability of the source, the spiraling polarization structure is robust to methodological choices. The degree and orientation of the linear polarization provide stringent constraints for the black hole and its surrounding magnetic fields, which we discuss in an accompanying publication.

We present one of the earliest domestic mpox cases in Taiwan, highlighting the asynchronous and atypical progression of cutaneous lesions which could pose significant diagnostic challenges for clinicians.

Clarifying the mechanisms governing volumetric soil water content (VSWC) dynamics in soil profiles is essential, as it can help to elucidate soil water transport processes and improve the prediction accuracy of soil hydrological processes. Using Spearman's rank correlation and wavelet coherence analysis methods, similarity in soil profile VSWC dynamics and factors governing VSWC soil profile dynamics in upslopes and downslopes under three vegetation types (evergreen forest [EG], secondary deciduous forest mixed with shrubs [SDFS], and deforested pasture [DP]) at different time scales (hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly) and in different seasons were analyzed. The results revealed significant similarity in the VSWC of different soil depths (P weekly (42.8%) > daily (21.8%). The effects of soil properties (e.g., texture, saturated hydraulic conductivity), rainfall, and potential evapotranspiration (ETp) on VSWC similarity were related to the time scale and season in which VSWC monitoring took place. Soil properties had apparent effects on VSWC similarity at longer time scales (i.e., monthly), with a high SCA. In contrast, the effects of rainfall and ETp on VSWC similarity were concentrated at weekly and daily scales, with a relatively low SCA. Rainfall and ETp dominated VSWC dynamics in the summer and fall, respectively. These results imply the use of measured VSWC at one soil depth to predict the VSWC at other soil depths was a reliable method. While the influence of time scale effects and seasonal variations on prediction accuracy of VSWC should be considered.

BackgroundPreeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder that always causes maternal and fetal serious adverse outcome. Disturbances in maternal immune tolerance to embryo at the maternal-fetal interface (MFI) may be associated with preeclampsia onset. Recent studies have revealed the reduced expression pattern of HLA-F at the MFI in preeclampsia, while the mechanism of it mediating maternal fetal immune tolerance has not been revealed.MethodsSingle-cell RNA sequencing on placental decidua was performed to reveal the immune disturbances landscape at the MFI in preeclampsia. Human Jar cells and NK-92MI cells were employed to study the role of HLA-F in trophoblasts and lymphocyte.ResultsA total of 101,250 cells were classified into 22 cell clusters. Disease-related IGFBP1+SPP1+ extracellular villus trophoblast (EVT) was identified in the preeclamptic placental decidua, accompanied by newly discovered immune cellular dysfunction such as reduced ribosomal functions of NK populations and abnormal expression of antigen-presenting molecules in most cell clusters. Certain genes that are characteristic of the intermediate stage of myeloid or EVT cell differentiation were found to have unexplored but important functions in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia; specifically, we detected enhanced cell cross-talk between IGFBP1+SPP1+ EVT2 or SPP1+M1 cells and their receptor cell populations at the MFI of PE patients compared to controls. With respect to HLA-F, mIF staining confirmed its reduced expression in PE samples compared to controls. Over-expression of HLA-F in Jar cells promoted cell proliferation, invasion, and migration while under-expression had the opposite effect. In NK-92MI cells, over-expression of HLA-F increased the secretion of immunoregulation cytokines such as CSF1 and CCL22, and promoted adaptive NKG2C+NK cell transformation.ConclusionsWe revealed the immune disturbance landscape at the MFI in preeclampsia. Our findings regarding cellular heterogeneity and immune cellular dysfunction, as revealed by scRNA-seq, and the function of HLA-F in cells provide new perspectives for further investigation of their roles in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, and then provide potential new therapeutic target.

Lipid metabolism is a complex process that maintains the normal physiological function of the human body. The disorder of lipid metabolism has been implicated in various human diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and bone diseases. Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), an age-related degenerative disease in the musculoskeletal system, is characterized by high morbidity, high treatment cost, and chronic recurrence. Lipid metabolism disorder may promote the pathogenesis of IDD, and the potential mechanisms are complex. Leptin, resistin, nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), fatty acids, and cholesterol may promote the pathogenesis of IDD, while lipocalin, adiponectin, and progranulin (PGRN) exhibit protective activity against IDD development. Lipid metabolism disorder contributes to extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, cell apoptosis, and cartilage calcification in the intervertebral discs (IVDs) by activating inflammatory responses, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and oxidative stress and inhibiting autophagy. Several lines of agents have been developed to target lipid metabolism disorder. Inhibition of lipid metabolism disorder may be an effective strategy for the therapeutic management of IDD. However, an in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism disorder in promoting IDD development is still needed.

Background: Characteristics of children with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Taiwanese households is nascent. We sought to characterize SARS-CoV-2 infection, and estimate the relative risk of infection among children within households during school closures in Taipei and New Taipei City. Methods: We reviewed consecutive children below 18 years presenting to our emergency department from May 18, 2021 to July 12, 2021 who underwent real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2 from respiratory swabs. Demographics, symptoms, and contacts were captured from medical records. Household contact was defined as an individual with confirmed COVID-19 living in the same residence as the child. Results: Among 56 children with SARS-CoV-2, twenty-five (45%) were male with mean age of 7.9 years. Symptoms were nonspecific, with 29% having fever, 32% having cough, and 48% were asymptomatic. The median cycle threshold (Ct) value of SARS-CoV-2 rRT-PCR was 25 (range 11–38). All 56 children reported 94 contacts with a COVID-19 patient, of which 99% were household contacts. The relative risk of infection was 8.5 (95% CI 5.0–14.7) for children whose parent(s) were COVID-19 patients, and 7.3 (95% CI 4.9–11.0) for children whose household grandparent(s) were patients, as compared to children without respective contacts. Children without COVID-19 contacts were all tested negative. Conclusions: During school closures in Taipei and New Taipei City, children with SARS-CoV-2 infection in our cohort had one or more COVID-19 contacts, mostly within their households. While diagnosing pediatric COVID-19 is challenging as children were often asymptomatic, those without contacts were likely uninfected.

Background: In Taiwan, there were only 799 confirmed COVID-19 cases in 2020. The unique backdrop amidst a pandemic and promotion of nonpharmaceutical interventions generated some distinct changes in the epidemiology of common respiratory pathogens. In this study, we aimed to investigate the dynamic changes in respiratory pathogens in children during 2020. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary hospital in southern Taiwan during 2020. Patients aged 0–18 years who visited the pediatric emergency department were enrolled. Children who presented with clinical symptoms (fever or respiratory illness) and received nasopharyngeal swabs for multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were included in our analysis. We also compared respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) trends from previous years by PCR and lateral flow immunochromatographic assays from 2017 to 2020. Results: A total of 120 children were tested. The overall detection rate was 55%. With strengthened restrictions, the detection rate dropped from 70% to 30%. However, non-enveloped viruses (rhinovirus/enterovirus and adenovirus) were in constant circulation. Upon easing prevention measures, the detection rate remained above 60%, and an outbreak of an enveloped virus (RSV and parainfluenza virus) was noted. Compared with 2017–2019, the cyclical RSV epidemic was delayed, with a large surge in late 2020. Conclusions: We observed a constant circulation of non-enveloped viruses when strict nonpharmaceutical interventions were employed and a delayed surge of enveloped viruses during the easing of restrictions. Continuous surveillance and monitoring of the evolutionary dynamics of respiratory viruses is important, while easing restrictions requires balanced judgment.

Abstract No proven prognosis is available for the neurodegenerative disorder fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). Artificial neural network analyses (ANN) were used to predict FXTAS progression using data from 127 adults (noncarriers and FMR1 premutation carriers with and without FXTAS) with five outcomes from brain MRI imaging and 22 peripheral bioenergetic outcomes from two cell types. Diagnosis accuracy by ANN predictions ranged from 41.7 to 86.3% (depending on the algorithm used), and those misclassified usually presented a higher FXTAS stage. ANN prediction of FXTAS stages was based on a combination of two imaging findings (white matter hyperintensity and whole-brain volumes adjusted for intracranial volume) and four bioenergetic outcomes. Those at Stage 3 vs. 0–2 showed lower mitochondrial mass, higher oxidative stress, and an altered electron transfer consistent with mitochondrial unfolded protein response activation. Those at Stages 4–5 vs. 3 had higher oxidative stress and glycerol-3-phosphate-linked ATP production, suggesting that targeting mGPDH activity may prevent a worse prognosis. This was confirmed by the bioenergetic improvement of inhibiting mGPDH with metformin in affected fibroblasts. ANN supports the prospect of an unbiased molecular definition in diagnosing FXTAS stages while identifying potential targets for personalized medicine.

Among previously uninfected healthcare workers in Taiwan, mRNA COVID-19 booster vaccine was associated with lower odds of COVID-19 after primary recombinant vaccine. Symptom-triggered testing revealed that tetravalent influenza vaccine was associated with higher odds of SARS-CoV-2 infection. COVID-19 vaccination continues to be most effective against SARS-CoV-2.

Inspired by the unique electrical properties of bilayer-twisted graphene with moiré superlattice, the light manipulation using photonic moiré structures has attracted tremendous research interest. In this paper, the moiré-lattice arrangement is introduced into the cladding of fiber to construct the moiré-lattice photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with two identical triangular-lattice or square-lattice layers of air holes rotated by a certain angle. The optical properties of the moiré-lattice PCF are studied in detail by varying the rotation angle with regards to the dispersion, effective mode field area, nonlinear coefficient and bending loss. Numerical results show that the optical properties of guiding mode can be flexibly regulated and optimized by the rotation angle. Moreover, the fiber can maintain single-mode transmission and low bending loss at different rotation angles. This moiré-lattice PCF provides a new way of regulating the structure for optimizing the fiber properties and offers a guidance for engineering moiré-lattice fiber devices.

Background: Necroptosis contributes significantly to colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). We aim to assess the relationship between immunoinfiltration and stemness in COAD patients through the development of a risk score profile using necroptosis-related long noncoding RNAs (NRLs).Methods: Our study was based on gene expression data and relevant clinical information from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Necroptosis-related genes (NRGs) were obtained from the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) database. Pearson correlation analysis, Cox regression, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression were used to determine the NRL prognositic signature (NRLPS). NRLs expression was examined using qRT-PCR method. Several algorithms were used to identify relationships between immune cell infiltration and NRLPS risk scores. Further analysis of somatic mutations, tumor stemness index (TSI), and drug sensitivity were also explored.Results: To construct NRLPS, 15 lncRNAs were investigated. Furthermore, NRLPS patients with high-risk subgroups had lower survival rates than that of patients with low-risk subgroups. Using GSEA analysis, NRL was found to be enriched in Notch, Hedgehog and Smoothened pathways. Immune infiltration analysis showed significant differences in CD8+ T cells, dendritic cell DCs, and CD4+ T cells between the two risk groups. In addition, our NRLPS showed a relevance with the regulation of tumor microenvironment, tumor mutation burden (TMB) and stemness. Finally, NRLPS demonstrated potential applications in predicting the efficacy of immunotherapy and chemotherapy in patients with COAD.Conclusion: Based on NRLs, a prognostic model was developed for COAD patients that allows a personalized tailoring immunotherapy and chemotherapy to be tailored.

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870 μ m wavelength (345 GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on intercontinental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in 2018 October. The longest-baseline detections approach 11 G λ , corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19 μ as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870 μ m is comparable to that at 1.3 mm on the relevant integration timescales between 2 and 100 s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870 μ m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time.

Background: The growing numbers of early esophageal cancer (EEC) have increased the demand for endoscopic therapy. Objectives: To clarify the influential factors for the prognosis of patients with EEC receiving endoscopic surgery, and to construct a nomogram to evaluate the prognostic value of endoscopic therapy. Design: Prognostic analysis study. Methods: Clinical data of EEC patients who received endoscopic therapy between 2004 and 2015 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database and used to construct the nomogram. The prognosis was analyzed by R language; the nomogram was constructed by Cox survival analysis; and the accuracy of the nomogram was verified by C index and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and calibration curves. X-Tile software was used to stratify the risk of patients. Results: Our study constructed the nomogram of the prognosis of patients with EEC treated by endoscopic surgery, including 1118 patients and 5 independent prognostic factors of esophageal cancer-specific survival. The C index and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the training and verification cohorts were all >0.75. The calibration curve also reflected the good consistency of the model in predicting survival. Significant difference in the risk of patients from different stratifications with the same T staging existed, and the model had a better C index than that of the T staging. Conclusion: Our study reports potential influential factors affecting the prognosis of EEC patients who received endoscopic therapy and establishes a reliable nomogram to predict the risk and prognosis, which has certain advantages compared with traditional TNM staging system.

Abstract Superplastic metals that exhibit exceptional ductility (>300%) are appealing for use in high‐quality engineering components with complex shapes. However, the wide application of most superplastic alloys has been constrained due to their poor strength, the relatively long superplastic deformation period, and the complex and high‐cost grain refinement processes. Here these issues are addressed by the coarse‐grained superplasticity of high‐strength lightweight medium entropy alloy (Ti43.3V28Zr14Nb14Mo0.7, at.%) with a microstructure of ultrafine particles embedded in the body‐centered‐cubic matrix. The results demonstrate that the alloy reached a high coarse‐grained superplasticity greater than ≈440% at a high strain rate of 10−2 s−1 at 1173 K and with a gigapascal residual strength. A consecutively triggered deformation mechanism that sequences of dislocation slip, dynamic recrystallization, and grain boundary sliding in such alloy differs from conventional grain‐boundary sliding in fine‐grained materials. The present results open a pathway for highly efficient superplastic forming, broaden superplastic materials to the high‐strength field, and guide the development of new alloys.

Abstract Background Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with CROSS regimen has been the recommended treatment for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The addition of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor to preoperative CRT may further improve oncologic results. Preoperative camrelizumab plus chemotherapy has been demonstrated as a promising treatment modality based on results of the phase II NICE study (ChiCTR1900026240). Methods The NICE-2 study is designed as a three-arm, multicenter, prospective, randomized, phase II clinical trial, comparing camrelizumab plus chemotherapy (IO-CT) and camrelizumab plus CRT (IO-CRT) versus CRT as preoperative treatment for locally advanced ESCC. A total of 204 patients will be recruited from 8 Chinese institutions within 1.5 years. The primary endpoint is pathological complete response (pCR) rate and secondary endpoints include event-free survival (EFS), R0 resection rate, and adverse events. Discussion This is the first prospective randomized controlled trial to explore commonly used neoadjuvant treatments in clinical practice, which will provide high-level evidence of neoadjuvant treatment for patients with locally advanced ESCC. The purpose of this study is to establish the optimal modality of IO-CT, IO-CRT and CRT as preoperative treatment for locally advanced ESCC. The Institution Review Committee approved this study protocol in August 2021 and patient enrollment was started in September 2021. Trial registration ClinicalTrial.gov: NCT05043688 (August 29, 2021). The trial was prospectively registered.

One common cause of vision loss after retinal detachment surgery is retinal scarring. Here the authors demonstrate that a bio-functional polymer can prevent retinal scarring by suppression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition and hyper-proliferation of retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Background: Data on Taiwanese adolescents with self-inflicted injuries are limited. We describe the epidemiology of children and adolescents visiting the emergency department for self-inflicted injuries in two geographically distinct teaching hospitals. Methods: Medical records of children 0–18 years old who visited the emergency department of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital and Chi Mei Medical Center, Tainan between 2016 and 2019 coded with relevant diagnoses were reviewed. Visits with documented self-inflicted injury were included. Results: During the 4-year period, 62 children made 74 emergency visits for self-inflicted injury. A total of 88% of visits were made by children with a psychiatric diagnosis, with depressive disorders being the most common (57%). Interpersonal relationship issue was cited as a trigger for self-harm in 49% of visits. Adjusted for annual visit volumes, self-harm visits per 10,000 pediatric emergency visits increased nearly 5 fold between 2016 and 2019, with the most prominent increase in the final year. Poisoning was the most common mechanism of injury and was frequently used by females, as compared to males who tended to jump from heights. Up to 96% of adolescents with previous self-harm seen at the emergency department had sought psychiatric help in the past year. Urban-rural inequity in mental health resource utilization was observed. Conclusions: Visits to the emergency department for self-inflicted injuries among children and adolescents increased, most remarkably in 2019, for both hospitals. Intentional poisoning with prescription and over-the-counter medications was the most common method. There was a high prevalence of psychiatric disorders in our study population. As the emergency department is likely the first point of medical contact for such visits, emergency personnel should be trained appropriately on managing such patients.

The premutation of the fragile X messenger ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene is characterized by an expansion of the CGG trinucleotide repeats (55 to 200 CGGs) in the 5’ untranslated region and increased levels of FMR1 mRNA. Molecular mechanisms leading to fragile X-premutation-associated conditions (FXPAC) include cotranscriptional R-loop formations, FMR1 mRNA toxicity through both RNA gelation into nuclear foci and sequestration of various CGG-repeat-binding proteins, and the repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN)-initiated translation of potentially toxic proteins. Such molecular mechanisms contribute to subsequent consequences, including mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal death. Clinically, premutation carriers may exhibit a wide range of symptoms and phenotypes. Any of the problems associated with the premutation can appropriately be called FXPAC. Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI), and fragile X-associated neuropsychiatric disorders (FXAND) can fall under FXPAC. Understanding the molecular and clinical aspects of the premutation of the FMR1 gene is crucial for the accurate diagnosis, genetic counseling, and appropriate management of affected individuals and families. This paper summarizes all the known problems associated with the premutation and documents the presentations and discussions that occurred at the International Premutation Conference, which took place in New Zealand in 2023.

In recent years, terahertz (THz) radar has been widely researched for its high-resolution imaging. However, the traditional inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging algorithms in the microwave band perform unsatisfactorily in the THz band. Firstly, due to THz radar’s large bandwidth and short wavelength, the rotation of the target will result in serious space-varying(SV) range migration and space-varying phase error. Furthermore, it is challenging to accurately estimate the rotational velocity and compensate for phase errors in the presence of severe range migration effects. Therefore, in this paper, a high-precision THz-ISAR imaging algorithm is proposed. The algorithm includes the following step: First, the SV first-order range migration(FRM) is corrected using keystone transform (KT); then, the minimum entropy based on modified newton (ME-MN) is used to estimate the rotational velocity roughly, and the remaining SV second-order range migration(SRM) is corrected to obtain the range profile with the envelope alignment. Finally, the echo after the envelope alignment is processed for the second time based on ME-MN. The target rotation velocity is accurately estimated, and the phase error is compensated to obtain a well-focused imaging result. The validity of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation and electromagnetic calculation data.

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a millimeter very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) array that has imaged the apparent shadows of the supermassive black holes M87* and Sagittarius A*. Polarimetric data from these observations contain a wealth of information on the black hole and accretion flow properties. In this work, we develop polarimetric geometric modeling methods for mm-VLBI data, focusing on approaches that fit data products with differing degrees of invariance to broad classes of calibration errors. We establish a fitting procedure using a polarimetric “m-ring” model to approximate the image structure near a black hole. By fitting this model to synthetic EHT data from general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic models, we show that the linear and circular polarization structure can be successfully approximated with relatively few model parameters. We then fit this model to EHT observations of M87* taken in 2017. In total intensity and linear polarization, the m-ring fits are consistent with previous results from imaging methods. In circular polarization, the m-ring fits indicate the presence of event-horizon-scale circular polarization structure, with a persistent dipolar asymmetry and orientation across several days. The same structure was recovered independently of observing band, used data products, and model assumptions. Despite this broad agreement, imaging methods do not produce similarly consistent results. Our circular polarization results, which imposed additional assumptions on the source structure, should thus be interpreted with some caution. Polarimetric geometric modeling provides a useful and powerful method to constrain the properties of horizon-scale polarized emission, particularly for sparse arrays like the EHT.

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. All methods find a moderate level of resolved circular polarization across the image (〈∣ v ∣〉 < 3.7%), consistent with the low image-integrated circular polarization fraction measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (∣ v _int ∣ < 1%). Despite this broad agreement, the methods show substantial variation in the morphology of the circularly polarized emission, indicating that our conclusions are strongly dependent on the imaging assumptions because of the limited baseline coverage, uncertain telescope gain calibration, and weakly polarized signal. We include this upper limit in an updated comparison to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation models. This analysis reinforces the previously reported preference for magnetically arrested accretion flow models. We find that most simulations naturally produce a low level of circular polarization consistent with our upper limit and that Faraday conversion is likely the dominant production mechanism for circular polarization at 230 GHz in M87*.

Nitrogen loss from paddy fields contributes to most of the nitrogen pollution load in the Ningxia Yellow River irrigation area, threatening the water quality of the Yellow River. Consequently, optimizing the nitrogen management practices in this area is essential, which can maintain paddy grain productivity and reduce nitrogen loss simultaneously. Five treatments with different nitrogen application rates and nitrogen fertilizer types were set in this study, including conventional urea application with zero nitrogen application rate (CK, 0 kg hm-2), nitrogen expert-based fertilization application strategy (NE, 210 kg hm-2), optimized nitrogen fertilizer application strategy recommended by local government (OPT, 240 kg hm-2), and farmer’s experience-based nitrogen fertilizer application strategy (FP, 300 kg hm-2), and controlled-release urea application (CRU, 180 kg hm-2). The data from one growth season field experiment in 2021 revealed the dynamics of nitrogen concentration, paddy yield and its nitrogen uptake characteristic, and nitrogen balance in the paddy field under different nitrogen application practices. Most nitrogen leaching was observed during the seedling and tillering stages in the form of nitrate nitrogen (NO3–N). Compared with the FP, the CRU and OPT significantly reduced the nitrogen concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and NO3–N in the surface and soil water and reduced the nitrogen leaching at 100 cm soil depth. Meanwhile, the paddy grain yield in CRU (7737 kg hm-2) and OPT (7379 kg hm-2) was not significantly decreased compared with FP (7918 kg hm-2), even though the nitrogen uptake by grain and straw was higher in FP (135 kg hm-2) than in other treatments (52.10~126.40 kg hm-2). However, the grain yield in NE (6972 kg hm-2) was decreased compared with the FP. The differences in grain yield among these treatments were mainly attributed to the ear number and grain number changes. Also, the highest nitrogen use efficiency (40.14%), apparent nitrogen efficiency (19.53 kg kg-1), and nitrogen partial productivity (43.98 kg kg-1) were identified in CRU than in other treatments. Considering increased grain yield and reducing nitrogen loss in the paddy field simultaneously, the treatments of CRU (i.e., 180 kg hm-2 nitrogen application rate with controlled-release urea) and OPT (i.e., 240 kg hm-2 nitrogen application rate with conventional urea) were recommended for nitrogen fertilizer application in the study area.

Mid-infrared antennas (MIRAs) support highly-efficient optical resonance in the infrared, enabling multiple applications, such as surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy and ultrasensitive mid-infrared detection. However, most MIRAs such as dipolar-antenna structures support only narrow-band dipolar-mode resonances while high-order modes are usually too weak to be observed, severely limiting other useful applications that broadband resonances make possible. In this study, we report a multiscale nanobridged rhombic antenna (NBRA) that supports two dominant resonances in the MIR, including a charge-transfer plasmon (CTP) band and a bridged dipolar plasmon (BDP) band which looks like a quadruple resonance. These assignments are evidenced by scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) imaging and electromagnetic simulations. The high-order mode only occurs with nanometer-sized bridge (nanobridge) linked to the one end of the rhombic arm which mainly acts as the inductance and the resistance by the circuit analysis. Moreover, the main hotspots associated with the two resonant bands are spatially superimposed, enabling boosting up the local field for both bands by multiscale coupling. With large field enhancements, multiband detection with high sensitivity to a monolayer of molecules is achieved when using SEIRA. Our work provides a new strategy possible to activate high-order modes for designing multiband MIRAs with both nanobridges and nanogaps for such MIR applications as multiband SEIRAs, IR detectors, and beam-shaping of quantum cascade lasers in the future.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an age-related chronic progressive degenerative disease that induces persistent pain and disabilities. The development of OA is a complex process, and the risk factors are various, including aging, genetics, trauma and altered biomechanics. Inflammation and immunity play an important role in the pathogenesis of OA. JAK/STAT pathway is one of the most prominent intracellular signaling pathways, regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Inflammatory factors can act as the initiators of JAK/STAT pathway, which is implicated in the pathophysiological activity of chondrocyte. In this article, we provide a review on the importance of JAK/STAT pathway in the pathological development of OA. Potentially, JAK/STAT pathway becomes a therapeutic target for managing OA.

Brain changes at the end-stage of fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) are largely unknown due to mobility impairment. We conducted a postmortem MRI study of FXTAS to quantify cerebrovascular disease, brain atrophy and iron content, and examined their relationships using principal component analysis (PCA). Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) was observed in 4/17 FXTAS cases, among which one was confirmed by histologic staining. Compared with seven control brains, FXTAS cases showed higher ratings of T2-hyperintensities (indicating cerebral small vessel disease) in the cerebellum, globus pallidus and frontoparietal white matter, and significant atrophy in the cerebellar white matter, red nucleus and dentate nucleus. PCA of FXTAS cases revealed negative associations of T2-hyperintensity ratings with anatomic volumes and iron content in the white matter, hippocampus and amygdala, that were independent from a highly correlated number of regions with ICH and iron content in subcortical nuclei. Post-hoc analysis confirmed PCA findings and further revealed increased iron content in the white matter, hippocampus and amygdala in FXTAS cases compared to controls, after adjusting for T2-hyperintensity ratings. These findings indicate that both ischemic and hemorrhagic brain damage may occur in FXTAS, with the former being marked by demyelination/iron depletion and atrophy, and the latter by ICH and iron accumulation in basal ganglia.

Abstract Background Retinal regenerative therapies hold great promise for the treatment of inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs). Studies in preclinical lower mammal models of IRDs have suggested visual improvement following retinal photoreceptor precursors transplantation, but there is limited evidence on the ability of these transplants to rescue retinal damage in higher mammals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of photoreceptor precursors derived from clinically compliant induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Methods Photoreceptor precursors were sub-retinally transplanted into non-human primates (Macaca fascicularis). The cells were transplanted both in naïve and cobalt chloride-induced retinal degeneration models who had been receiving systemic immunosuppression for one week prior to the procedure. Optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence imaging, electroretinography, ex vivo histology and immunofluorescence staining were used to evaluate retinal structure, function and survival of transplanted cells. Results There were no adverse effects of iPSC-derived photoreceptor precursors on retinal structure or function in naïve NHP models, indicating good biocompatibility. In addition, photoreceptor precursors injected into cobalt chloride-induced retinal degeneration NHP models demonstrated an ability both to survive and to mature into cone photoreceptors at 3 months post-transplant. Optical coherence tomography showed restoration of retinal ellipsoid zone post-transplantation. Conclusions These findings demonstrate the safety and therapeutic potential of clinically compliant iPSC-derived photoreceptor precursors as a cell replacement source for future clinical trials.

Abstract Enterobacteria that produce extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) are common in our environment and known to cause serious health implications in humans and animals. β-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins, cephalosporins and monobactams are the most commonly used anti-bacterials in both humans and animals, however, Gram negative bacteria (such as E. coli) that produces extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have the ability to hydrolyze most β-lactams therefore making them resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. Recent extensive researches on the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli reported the existence of ESBL-producing E. coli in humans, companion animals and poultry. Therefore, this experiment was performed to investigate the prevalence and genetic characteristics of β-lactamase producing E. coli isolated from beef cattle farms in the Sichuan-Chongqing circle of China. Phenotypic confirmation of ESBL-producing E. coli was performed using the double disk synergy test. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) was used to detect bla CTX-M, bla SHV and bla TEM gene codes, then after, isolates were divided into different phylogenetic groups and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). The results showed that out of the 222 E. coli strains isolated from the beef cattle, 102 strains showed ESBL phenotypes. The PCR results showed that bla CTX-M was the predominant ESBL gene identified among the E. coli strains with 21 (9.5%) isolates having this gene, followed by bla SHV which was found in 18 (8.1%) isolates. The majority of these ESBL positive isolates were assigned to phylogroup A (19.8%) followed by phylogroup B1 (13.5%). In addition, from the MLST results on ESBL positive isolates (n = 30) we identified 19 STs, ST398 (ST398cplx) and ST7130 which were the prevalent population (20%). In conclusion, the high prevalence of CTX-M, and SHV in the study confirmed its association with E. coli infection; therefore, this calls for health concerns on ESBL-producing E. coli. As far as we know, this is the first comprehensive research report relating to ESBL-producing E. coli incidence in Chinese beef cattle.

Thura and colleagues report that PRL3 promotes PGCCs, which are found to be enriched in relapsed tumours. The authors demonstrated that this relapse can be prevented using PRL3-zumab for use in adjuvant immunotherapy to target PRL3-expressing PGCCs, thus preventing metastasis and relapse.

Abstract The peak identification scheme based method (three-point definition) and the spectral moments based method (spectral moment approach) are both widely used for asperity peak modeling in tribology. To discover the differences between the two methods, a great number of rough surface profile samples with various statistical distributions are first randomly generated using FFT. Then the distribution parameters of asperity peaks are calculated for the generated samples with both methods. The obtained results are compared and verified by experiment. The variation rules of the differences between the two methods with statistical characteristics of rough surfaces are investigated. To explain for the discovered differences, the assumptions by spectral moment approach that the joint distribution of surface height, slope and curvature is normal and that the height distribution of asperities is Gaussian, are examined. The results show that it is unreasonable to assume a joint normal distribution without inspecting the correlation pattern of [z], [z′] and [z′′], and that the height distribution of asperities is not exactly Gaussian before correlation length of rough surface increases to a certain extent, 20 for instance.

We report 4 cases of neonatal sepsis caused by Streptococcus gallolyticus. The clinical course was quite similar to early-and late-onset group B streptococcus disease. None of the mothers had group B streptococcus (GBS) colonization on prenatal screening nor received intrapartum antibiotics. We proposed the sporadic distribution of S. gallolyticus sepsis among neonates was partly due to relatively low colonization rate in adults compared with GBS. Species determination of S. gallolyticus may not be available using conventional microbiological methods and may contribute to underestimation or misclassification. In our series, we highlighted the importance of S. gallolyticus as an important pathogen in neonatal sepsis deserving further surveillance.
