Despite its potential prognostic value concurrent atrial ischemia is often overlooked in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). There is no study concerning the relationship between atrial coronary circulation and dynamic PR-segment changes in patients with AMI. We evaluated dynamic PR-segment changes in 37 patients with AMI. The flow in the principal atrial coronary branches was diminished in 14 (38%) patients. Dynamic changes in the PR-segment level [median 47 (inter quartile range 19–55) μV vs. 23 (18–30) μV, P = 0.005] and PR-segment area [3.15 (1.75-3.69) nVs vs. 1.62 (1.18-2.04) nVs, P = 0.005] were significantly greater in patients with compromised than in those with normal flow in the atrial coronary branches. Our findings support the concept that atrial ischemia produces similar changes in the PR-segment as ventricular ischemia in the ST-segment. Given the possible deleterious consequences of atrial ischemia these data may have important clinical implications in evaluation of patient with AMI.

Because of the climatic conditions, the Finnish milk production research has focused to improve the utilisation of grassland, mainly as conserved forages. The main research areas have been ensiling, evaluation of the forage feeding value, predicting nutrient supply from grass silage-based diet and the effects of forage quality and concentrate supplementation on milk production responses. Due to changes in ensiling technologies and variety of forage crops new silage additives have been adopted. A centralized system for the analysis of forage energy value is based on NIRS calibration. It was calibrated against in vitro pepsin-cellulase solubility method that was validated against in vivo digestibility. The concentration of indigestible neutral detergent fibre was found to be a useful parameter both in empirical models predicting forage digestibility and mechanistic rumen models predicting the amounts of absorbed nutrients. Models predicting relative intake potential of forages and total diet were developed, and an intake model combining animal and diet effects independently of each other was developed. Using meta-analysis approaches a nutrient response model was developed for dairy cows for milk, energy corrected milk and protein yield. Feed evaluation, intake and nutrient response models form now the basis of practical Finnish ration formulation system that can optimize diets according to maximum income over feed cost in addition to minimum feed cost.

The objective of this study was to compare the application of different in vitro and in situ methods in empirical and mechanistic predictions of in vivo OM digestibility (OMD) and their associations to near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy spectra for a variety of forages. Apparent in vivo OMD of silages made from alfalfa (n = 2), corn (n = 9), corn stover (n = 2), grass (n = 11), whole crops of wheat and barley (n = 8) and red clover (n = 7), and fresh alfalfa (n = 1), grass hays (n = 5), and wheat straws (n = 5) had previously been determined in sheep. Concentrations of indigestible NDF (iNDF) in all forage samples were determined by a 288-h ruminal in situ incubation. Gas production of isolated forage NDF was measured by in vitro incubations for 72 h. In vitro pepsin-cellulase OM solubility (OMS) of the forages was determined by a 2-step gravimetric digestion method. Samples were also subjected to a 2-step determination of in vitro OMD based on buffered rumen fluid and pepsin. Further, rumen fluid digestible OM was determined from a single 96-h incubation at 38°C. Digestibility of OM from the in situ and the in vitro incubations was calculated according to published empirical equations, which were either forage specific or general (1 equation for all forages) within method. Indigestible NDF was also used in a mechanistic model to predict OMD. Predictions of OMD were evaluated by residual analysis using the GLM procedure in SAS. In vitro OMS in a general prediction equation of OMD did not display a significant forage-type effect on the residuals (observed - predicted OMD; P = 0.10). Predictions of OMD within forage types were consistent between iNDF and the 2-step in vitro method based on rumen fluid. Root mean square error of OMD was least (0.032) when the prediction was based on a general forage equation of OMS. However, regenerating a simple regression for iNDF by omitting alfalfa and wheat straw reduced the root mean square error of OMD to 0.025. Indigestible NDF in a general forage equation predicted OMD without any bias (P ≥ 0.16), and root mean square error of prediction was smallest among all methods when alfalfa and wheat straw samples were excluded. Our study suggests that compared with the in vitro laboratory methods, iNDF used in forage-specific equations will improve overall predictions of forage in vivo OMD. The in vitro and in situ methods performed equally well in calibrations of iNDF or OMD by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy.

The objective of this meta-analysis was to develop empirical prediction equations for milk and milk component yields using energy and protein intake and dietary composition as independent variables. A dataset of 1125 dietary treatment means from 245 production studies in dairy cows was collected. The diets were mainly based on grass silage or grass silage partly or completely replaced by leguminous or whole crop silages. Concentrates were fed on a flat rate basis. They were composed of cereal grains, fibrous by-products and different protein supplements. Dietary characteristics [crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), starch, non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC) and silage fermentation] and feed values [metabolizable energy (ME) and protein (MP), ruminal CP balance and Feed MP] were recorded in the dataset. Production variables showed wide ranges: days in milk (38–232), dry matter (DM) intake (9.9–25.2 kg/d), and yields of milk (MY; 13.0–45.8) kg/d, energy corrected milk (ECM; 12.8–43.5 kg), fat (479–1830 g/d) and protein (PY, 359–1449 g/d). Mixed model regression analysis with a random study effect was used to develop prediction equations for MY, ECM and PY. The best-fit models for MY and ECM included linear and quadratic effects of ME intake available for production (MEI) and concentrations of NFC and concentrate fat and linear effect of Feed MP concentration as significant variables, the effect of MEI intake being most pronounced. Correcting ME intake for feeding level and associative effects of dietary composition further improved the fit of the models. The best-fit equation for PY included linear effect of MEI and linear and quadratic effects of Feed MP intake and dietary concentrations of NFC and concentrate fat. The adjusted root mean squared errors were 0.424 kg/d, 0.497 kg/d and 15.2 g/d for MY and ECM and PY equations, respectively. Cross-validation errors were only marginally greater than calibration errors with almost all error variance due to random variation. The basic structure of the models confirmed the well established concept of diminishing milk and milk component returns with incremental increases in nutrient intake. The results demonstrated that the models predicted production responses of dairy cows to the changes in nutrient supply with a reasonable accuracy. It is concluded that the models can be used in the optimization of dairy cow rations on practical farms to maximize milk income over feed costs.

KarjaKompassi-kokonaisuuden kehittäminen ja sen taustalle tehty tutkimustyö ovat merkittävä panostus, joka on nyt saatu käyttöön suomalaisen maidontuotannon ja maitotilojen kilpailukyvyn kehittämiseksi. KarjaKompassi-palvelukokonaisuus on tehty karjatilojen tuotannonohjaukseen, jolla seurataan ja suunnitellaan ruokintaa, maidon- ja rehuntuotantoa ja sen taloutta. Uusien ohjelmistojen ja palveluiden avulla tutkimuksesta saatu tieto jalkautuu yksittäisten karjojen tasolle. KarjaKompassia on työstetty vuosina 2008-2011 projektissa, jossa olivat mukana ProAgria Keskusten Liitto ja ProAgria Laskentakeskus, Valio Oy, SLU, MTT, HY ja TTS. Suomen meijeriyhdistys ja TEKES ovat osallistujien lisäksi rahoittaneet projektia. Ruokinnan suunnitteluun lähdetään KarjaKompassissa uudelta pohjalta. Työ aloitetaan lähtötilanteen huolellisella tarkastelulla Ruokinnan seurannan päivälaskelman avulla. Se otettiin käyttöön vuoden 2010 alussa ja sen perusteella voidaan arvioida ruokinnan onnistumista, tarvittaessa säätää ruokinta kohdalleen ja arvioida karjan vakiotuotos. Syksyllä 2011 otettiin käyttöön ruokinnan suunnittelu, joka on kiinteässä yhteydessä ruokinnan seurannan kanssa. Yhdessä ruokinnan seuranta ja suunnittelu muodostavat Ruokinnanohjauspalvelun, jossa analysoidaan laskelmista saadut tulokset ja havainnoidaan toteutuksen ongelmakohdat tilatasolla navetassa ja pellolla. Ruokinnan taloudellisessa optimoinnissa KarjaKompassi huomioi ruokinnan muutosten taloudelliset vaikutukset rahatuloihin maidon määrän ja koostumuksen muutosten kautta. Valittavana on myös muita optimointiperusteita. Monipuoliset optimointimahdollisuudet ovat tarpeellisia, koska tuotantopanosten ja tuotteiden hinnat todennäköisesti vaihtelevat jatkossakin nopeasti ja niihin on pystyttävä tilatasolla reagoimaan. Tuottoennuste-osio valmistuu talven 2011-2012 aikana. Tuottoennusteesta saadaan tietoa karjan tulevista eläinmääristä, maitotuotoksista sekä maidon pitoisuuksista, joiden perusteella voidaan arvioida maidosta saatava rahallinen tuotto vuosibudjetoinnin taustalle tai investointeja suunniteltaessa. KarjaKompassi-kokonaisuuden avulla voidaan tarkastella erilaisia vaihtoehtoja maidontuotannon, kasvinviljelyn ja talouden näkökulmasta. Suunnitelmassa lähdetään liikkeelle siitä, että karja on pellon asiakas. KarjaKompassin nettipohjaisilla ohjelmilla tehdyt laskelmat tallentuvat ProAgrian tietopankkeihin, joissa on tietoa maitotilojen eläinaineksesta, maidontuotannosta, rehuvaroista, rehujenkulutuksesta ja ruokinta- ja lypsytekniikoista, sadoista sekä peltojen lannoituksesta. Näitä tietoja maitotilat voivat yhteisesti hyödyntää ProAgrian Tilakunnon kautta tekemällä erilaisia vertailuja. Tässä kirjoituksessa esitellään KarjaKompassi-kokonaisuutta karjatilojen tuotannonohjauksen näkökulmasta ja uusia tutkimustuloksia, joihin se perustuu.

Intensive dairy farming results in significant phosphorus (P) emission to the environment. Field data indicates that farm-gate P surplus is highly positive in Finland and strategies to mitigate the surplus are needed. The objectives of this study were to build a P cycle model for dairy farms (1) and to validate the model with independent field data (2). The dairy farm nutrient management model (“Lypsikki”) described in this paper includes three sub-models: (1) soil and crop, (2) dairy herd and (3) manure management. The model is based on empirical regression equations allowing estimations of crop and milk yields in response to increased fertilisation and nutrient supply, respectively. In addition, the model includes a dynamic simulation model of the dairy herd structure and calculation of the farm-gate nutrient surplus. The model was validated with independent annual (average for 1–4 years) farm-gate P surplus data from 21 dairy farms. Model simulations were conducted using two levels of soil productivity, mean (M) and low (L). The model validation indicated a strong relationships between model-predicted and observed farm-gate P surplus: (M: R2 = 0.77 and L: R2 = 0.80). The line bias between the model-predicted and observed data was negligible and insignificant (P > 0.6) suggesting a robustness of the model. To reduce (P) surpluses on dairy farms and thereby the risk of P losses to natural waters we studied different management alternatives by a nutrient balance model described in the companion paper. The strategies evaluated mitigating the P surpluses were: mineral P fertilisation, dietary mineral P supplementation, replacement rate, animal density, production level, feeding intensity, dietary P concentration and nutrient efficiency in crop production. Responses to several interventions (e.g. mineral P fertilisation, purchased feed P, replacement rate) were similar to those observed in Finnish field studies. Reducing or completely giving up the use of purchased mineral P fertilisers was the most efficient measure to reduce P surplus. The slope between the amount of mineral fertilisers and P surplus was 0.98–0.99 (in the field data 1.0). Increased animal density resulted in a greater P surplus, but the slope between P input from purchased feed and surplus was considerably smaller (0.65) than that of P fertilisation. Increasing milk yield with improved genetic potential of the cows would have minimal effects on P surplus per unit of product, but it would increase P surplus per hectare. When the intensity of energy and protein feeding was increased, P surplus rose markedly both per unit of product and hectare. This is (1) due to increased dietary P concentration and (2) due to smaller marginal production responses than those calculated from feeding standards. Reducing dietary P concentration by constraining P excess per kg milk in least-cost ration formulation improved P efficiency in milk production and dairy farming system. However, feed cost increased as low P energy (sugar-beet pulp) and protein (soybean meal) supplements are more expensive than cereal grains or rapeseed feeds. Improving the nutrient use efficiency in crop production had a strong influence in the whole-farm efficiency and P surplus. The modelling results showed that Finnish dairy farms have a great potential to improve P efficiency and reduce P losses to the environment, even by increasing production intensity (milk/ha). It is concluded that the most cost-effective scenario to mitigate P surpluses at a dairy farm would be to reduce or give up the use of mineral P as fertilisers and supplements, and to improve the use of present soil P reserves.

This paper presents technologies and methods that have been used when developing a virtual campus for Biomedical Engineering. Modern educational technologies have been applied to produce video lectures for personal computers, iPods, media phones, and to integrate virtual communication system. It became possible to break traditional classroom boundaries and to develop a worldwide, low-cost, modern technology-based virtual campus. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Useimmissa rehuarvojärjestelmissä naudoille käytettyjen rehujen energia-arvot pohjautuvat lampailla tehtyihin sulavuuskokeisiin, joissa kyseistä rehua tarjotaan yksinään niin että eläinten ylläpitoenergian tarve täyttyy. Tämä standardoitu sulavuuskoe kuvaa hyvin kullekin rehulle ominaista potentiaalista energia-arvoa märehtijöillä, ts. eläin ei voi valita syömäänsä rehua eikä mikään tekijä vaikututa sulavuutta heikentävästi. Näin saatuja sulavuusarvoja ei voi kuitenkaan suoraan käyttää lypsylehmillä kuvaamaan absoluuttista energiansaantia, koska rehujen välillä on yhdysvaikutuksia ja lehmät syövät 3-4 kertaa enemmän rehua kuin ylläpitoon tarvitaan. Tämän seurauksena lampailla yksittäisten rehujen ylläpitotason sulavuus (OMDm) yliarvioi lehmien sekadieettien (dieetissä sekä väkirehua että karkearehuja) sulavuuden tuotantotasolla (OMDp).Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kvantifioida rehuannoksen koostumuksen ja ruokintatason vaikutus lypsylehmien rehuannoksen sulavuuteen. Tutkimusaineisto koostui lypsylehmillä suoritetuista tutkimuksista, joissa dieetin sulavuus oli mitattu sonnan kokonaiskeruumenetelmällä tai käyttäen happoon liukenematonta tuhkaa (AIA) merkkiaineena. Kokeissa käytettyjen karkearehujen OMDm määritettiin joko in vivo sulavuuskokeella tai in vitro menetelmillä (sellulaasi- tai pötsineste -menetelmä). Väkirehujen OMDm saatiin taulukosta. Tutkimusaineisto koostui 497 ruokinnasta yhteensä 92 kokeessa. Dieettien OMDp ennustettiin käyttämällä SAS sekamalli regressioanlyysiä, jossa koe oli satunnaistekijänä. Lehmien dieettien OMDp oli vahvasti korreloitunut sulavuuteen ylläpitotasolla (OMDm), mutta kulmakerroin oli merkitsevästi alle 1.00 (0.69, P

Suomen olosuhteissa nurmikasvien kehitys alkukesällä on erittäin nopeaa. Korjuun ajoitus on rehuntuotannon taloudelliseen tulokseen merkittävästi vaikuttava päätös, sillä kasvun edetessä rehun sulavuus laskee, mutta sadon määrä kasvaa. Sulavuuden arviointi kasvustosta ei ole kovin helppoa ja vuosittaiset vaihtelut sopivan korjuuajan saavuttamisessa ovat suuria alkukesän vaihtelevista sääoloista johtuen. Esittämällä D-arvon muutos suhteessa lämpösummaan on pystytty avustamaan viljelijöitä korjuuaikapäätöksen tekemisessä. Ennusteet on esitetty MTT:n ja Valio Oy:n yhteisessä ARTTURI®- verkkopalvelussa (www.mtt.fi/artturi). Tämän työn tarkoituksena on tarkentaa alkukesän nurmikasvien D-arvoennustetta kehittämällä taustalla käytettävää mallia. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin, mitkä säätekijät vaikuttavat nurmien kuiva-ainesadon kehittymiseen. D-arvoa mallitettiin yleisillä lineaarisilla sekamalleilla käyttäen perustana Gompertzin käyrää muistuttavaa yhtälöä ja kuiva-ainesatoa mallitettiin lineaarisilla sekamalleilla. Sarjakohtaisia selittäjiä aineistossa olivat mm. maalaji, sijainti, kasvukautta edeltäneet lämpösumma ja sadesumma sekä niiden johdannaiset. Havaintokohtaisina selittäjinä lämpösumman lisäksi käytettiin eri sääsuureita ja kasvuajan pituutta kasvukauden alusta. D-arvot vaihtelivat sarjoissa kasvukauden aikana välillä 510 – 786 g/kg ka keskiarvon ollessa 710 g/kg ka. D-arvon ennustamisessa päädyttiin seuraavaan malliin: D-arvo (g/kg ka) = 769.5 – exp(5.61 × (1 – exp(-0.07 × (LS+ 0.016×PreLS28 -7.58) ) ) ), missä LS on kasvukauden lämpösummakertymä astepäivinä (°C vrk) ja PreLS28 on kasvukautta edeltävän 28 päivän keskilämpötilojen summa (R2=0.82). Kuiva-ainesadot hehtaaria kohden vaihtelivat välillä 500 kg – 11 000 kg keskiarvon ollessa 4 200 kg. Kuiva-aineen hehtaarisato lisääntyi keskimäärin 191 kg/pv kasvun edetessä alkukesällä. Nurmisadon D-arvon lasku alkukesällä on hyvin nopeaa ja varsin johdonmukaista. D-arvon muutos on käyräviivaista, mutta säilörehun korjuuaikaan sen on varsin lineaarista ja keskimäärin 5 g/kg ka päivässä. Lämpösummaa käyttäen D-arvon kehityksestä voidaan antaa kohtuullisia yleisiä ennusteita. Lämpö-olot vaikuttivat merkitsevästi myös kuiva-ainesadon kertymiseen, mutta sadesumma ei. Kasvustokohtaiset erot olivat erittäin suuria joten kuiva-ainesatoennusteet voivat olla ainoastaan suuntaa-antavia.

A meta-analysis based on published experiments with lactating dairy cows was conducted to study the effects of dietary forage and concentrate factors on apparent total diet digestibility. A data set was collected that included a total of 497 dietary treatment means from 92 studies. The diets were based on grass silage or on legume or whole-crop cereal silages partly or completely substituted for grass silage. The silages were supplemented with concentrates given at a flat rate within a dietary comparison. For the statistical evaluation, the data were divided into 5 subsets to quantify silage (digestibility, 42 diets in 17 studies; fermentation characteristics, 108 diets in 39 studies) and concentrate (amount of supplementation, 142 diets in 59 studies; concentration of crude protein, 215 diets in 82 studies; carbohydrate composition, 66 diets in 23 studies) factors on total diet digestibility. The diet digestibility of dairy cows was determined by total fecal collection or by using acid-insoluble ash as an internal marker. Diet organic matter digestibility (OMD) at a maintenance level of feeding (OMD(m)) was estimated using sheep in vivo or corresponding in vitro digestibility values for the forage and reported ingredient and chemical composition values, with tabulated digestibility coefficients for the concentrate components of the diet. A mixed model regression analysis was used to detect the responses of different dietary factors on apparent total diet digestibility. Improved silage OMD(m) resulting from earlier harvest was translated into improved production-level OMD in cows (OMD(p)). The effects of silage fermentation characteristics on OMD(p) were quantitatively small, although sometimes significant. Concentrate supplementation improved total diet OMD(m), but this was not realized in lactating dairy cows because of linearly decreased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility as concentrate intake increased. Increasing the concentrate crude protein amount quadratically improved OMD(p) in cows, with the response being mostly due to improved NDF digestibility. Replacement of starchy concentrates with fibrous by-products slightly decreased OMD(p) but tended to improve NDF digestibility. The true digestibility of cell solubles (OM - NDF) estimated by the Lucas test both from all data and from the data subsets was not significantly different from 1.00, suggesting that responses in OMD(p) of dairy cows are mediated through changes in the concentration and digestibility of NDF.

Two silages were prepared from the primary growth (PG) of timothy-meadow fescue sward at early (E) and late (L) stage of growth. The subsequent regrowth (RG) areas were further harvested at early (EE and LE) and late (EL and LL) stages of growth resulting in six silages in total. The silages were fed ad libitum to 24 lactating Finnish Ayrshire cows and supplemented with 8 or 12 kg concentrate per day in a cyclic change-over experiment with four 21-day periods and 6 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The quality of silages varied markedly within and between the harvests although variation was greater within PG than RG. Postponing the harvest in PG decreased silage dry matter (DM) intake by 0.48 kg and energy corrected milk yield (ECM) by 0.61 per 10 g decrease in silage D-value (concentration of digestible organic matter in DM), while responses and the range between the diets were clearly smaller when RG silages were fed. On average, ECM yield was higher when PG rather than RG silages were fed. The mean response to increased concentrate DM intake was 0.62 kg ECM using diets based on PG. The response increased with increasing growth stage of grass being 0.34 and 1.01 kg ECM / kg additional concentrate DM for E and L, respectively. The difference was mainly mediated by the differences in substitution rates (reduction in silage DM intake per increase in concentrate DM intake, kg/kg), which were 0.71 and 0.22 for E and L, respectively. The ECM response to increased concentrate allowance was on average greater when RG rather than PG silages (0.92 vs. 0.62 kg/kg concentrate) were fed. Milk production of dairy cows reflected the intake of metabolizable energy and no differences in the utilization of it were found between diets based on silages harvested from PG and RG. However, intake of RG silages was slightly lower than that of comparable PG silage, but definite reasons for that could not be identified.

A meta-analysis based on 253 treatment means from 80 dairy cow production experiments was conducted to estimate the effects of the silage water-soluble N components on milk production, milk urea N concentration, and the efficiency of N utilization in milk production. The original experiments were conducted to study forage treatments (e.g., digestibility, fermentation quality, or wilting). Both the level and composition of concentrates were fixed within an experiment. Silage soluble N (g/kg of N) was divided into ammonia N and soluble nonammonia N, which was determined without the use of protein precipitants; that is, soluble nonammonia N as defined here encompassed proteins, peptides, and free AA. Metabolizable protein was calculated as AA absorbed from the small intestine by using constant values for ruminal protein degradability and intestinal digestibility of undegraded protein. Metabolizable energy and protein intakes were used as independent variables in regression models investigating the effects of soluble N components on energy-corrected milk and milk protein yields. A mixed regression model was used to account for between-experiment variations; that is, the response of fixed factors was studied within experiments. Silage soluble N components did not affect the energy-corrected milk yield when used in bivariate models with metabolizable energy intake. Solubility of silage N had a negative effect on milk protein yield when included in the model with metabolizable protein. However, this effect was almost completely related to ammonia N, whereas the effect of soluble nonammonia N was nonsignificant and negligible. The effects of soluble N components on milk urea N concentration and efficiency of N utilization in milk production were consistent with milk production responses. A lack of milk production responses to silage soluble nonammonia N suggested that the partition of silage N into soluble and insoluble N (excluding ammonia N) did not markedly influence silage metabolizable protein concentration. Analysis of silage N solubility has limited value in practical feed evaluation, and silage metabolizable protein concentration can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by using constant values for ruminal protein degradability and intestinal digestion of undegraded feed protein.

Maidontuotannon toimintaympäristö on muuttumassa nopeasti. Rehujen ja maidon hinnan muutokset aiheuttavat sen, että perinteiset ruokintaa optimoivat mallit eivät pysty määrittämään parhaan taloudellisen tuloksen antavaa ruokintaa, eivätkä pysty ohjaamaan tilan rehuntuotantoa taloudellisesti oikeaan suuntaan. Nykymallit eivät myöskään pysty ottamaan huomioon riittävän hyvin ruokintojen aiheuttamia ravinnepäästöjä. Ruokinta on yksi tärkeimmistä keinoista ravinneylijäämien vähentämiseksi ja siksi optimointimalleilla pitää pystyä määrittelemään ravinneylijäämien vähentämisen kustannukset. Tuotosvasteisiin perustuva ruokinnan optimointi edellyttää, että: (1) rehuannoksen määrällisesti tärkeimmän ja eniten rehuarvoltaan vaihtelevan säilörehun rehuarvot pystytään määrittämään tarkasti, (2) rehuarvojärjestelmät arvioivat rehujen ravintoarvon ja tuotantovaikutuksen suhteessa toisiin rehuihin mahdollisimman oikein, (3) rehuannoksen koostumusten muutosten vaikutukset rehun syöntiin pystytään ennustamaan riittävällä tarkkuudella ja (4) ravintoaineiden saannin muutosten aiheuttamat tuotosvasteet pystytään mallintamaan. Pitkäjänteisen tutkimustyön tuloksena olemme päässeet tilanteeseen, jossa nämä osa-alueet on voitu yhdistää tuotosvasteisiin perustuvaksi ruokinnan suunnittelu- ja optimointimalliksi. Mallin etuja aikaisempiin malleihin verrattuna ovat mm. dieetin ja eläimen syöntipotentiaalin perusteella määritettävä maksimisyönti ja rehujen yhdysvaikutusten huomioon ottaminen. Optimointi perustuu ruokintatason ja rehujen yhdysvaikutukset huomioon ottavaan todelliseen ravintoaineiden saantiin. Merkittävä edistysaskel on se, että dieetin minimihinnan lisäksi voidaan optimoida maitotuoton ja rehukustannuksen erotus joko maitolitraa tai lehmäpäivää kohti. Kun annetaan energian ja valkuaisen ruokintasuosituksen vaihdella tietyissä rajoissa, voidaan määrittää taloudellisesti kannattavin ruokintaintensiteetti nykyisillä hinnoilla tilan rehuvarastoihin ja ostorehuihin perustuen. Malli antaa mahdollisuudet asettaa rajoitukset, jotka tähtäävät eläinten terveyden ylläpitoon. Samaten ruokinta voidaan optimoida tietyn maksimaalisen ravinneylijäämän alittavaksi ja näin verrata ruokinnallisin toimenpitein saavutettavan ravinnekuormituksen vähentämisen hintaa muiden toimenpiteiden kustannuksiin. Simulointien tulokset osoittivat, että tuotosvasteisiin perustuvilla optimoinneilla voidaan taloudellista tulosta parantaa jopa 100 – 150 euroa lehmää kohti vuodessa riippuen lähtötilanteesta, rehujen hinnasta ym. Ruokinnan optimointi tuotosvasteiden perusteella, jopa kiinteillä mutta erityisesti joustavilla suosituksilla, parantaa taloudellista tulosta dieetin minimihinnan optimointiin verrattuna. Tuotosvasteisiin perustuva optimointi osoitti selvästi, että hintasuhteiden vaihdellessa ruokinnan intensiteettiä kannattaa muuttaa. Väkirehun ollessa halpaa intensiteettiä kannattaa lisätä yli nykyisten ruokintasuositusten, kun kiintiöiden ylitys ei ole todennäköinen uhka. Toisaalta nykyisillä väkirehun hinnoilla eli ole kannattavaa tavoitella korkeita tuotoksia jos pötsin normaalin toiminnan ylläpitävän kuituminimi uhkaa alittua (240 g karkearehun NDF-kuitua/kg KA). Simuloinnit osoittivat, että virheelliset rehuarvot tai analyysitulokset voivat aiheuttaa merkittäviä taloudellisia menetyksiä. Mallia voidaan käyttää myös tilan rehuntuotannon ohjaamiseen. Esimerkiksi liian vähän mutta erittäin hyvää säilörehua tuottavan tilan kannattaa hieman tinkiä sadon laadusta määrän kustannuksella ennemmin kuin ostaa heinää kuidun minimitarpeen tyydyttämiseksi.

Karkearehujen sulavuus vaikuttaa merkittävästi rehujen energia- ja valkuaisarvoihin, syöntipotentiaaliin ja rehua syövien lehmien maidontuotantoon. Sulavuuden luotettava määrittäminen on siis erittäin tärkeää rehujen tuotantovaikutuksen määrittämiseksi ja ruokinnan taloudellisen optimoinnin lähtötietona. Tässä kirjoituksessa käsitellään märehtijöiden ruokinnassa käytettävien karkearehujen sulavuuden määrittämistä. Karkearehujen sulavuuden referenssimenetelmänä käytetään lampailla in vivo ruokinnan ylläpitotasolla suoritettua sulavuuskoetta, jossa sulavuus lasketaan eläinten syömän ja sonnassa erittyneen ravintoaineen määrän erotuksena. Rehujen sulavuutta voidaan arvioida erilaisin laboratorioanalyysein, jotka jäljittelevät eläinten ruoansulatuskanavassa tapahtuvaa rehun sulatusta. Tässä tutkimusaineistossa on mukana 86 säilörehua noin 10 vuoden ajalta, joiden sulavuus on määritetty lampailla in vivo ja monipuolisesti laboratoriomenetelmin. Karkearehutyypeistä mukana ovat nurmisäilörehu ensimmäisestä sadosta ja jälkisadosta, puna-apila- ja kokoviljasäilörehu. Yksittäisten kemiallisten komponenttien (RV, NDF, ADF, ligniini) yhteydet sulavuuteen eivät ole riittäviä sulavuuden ennustamiseen. Biologiset laboratoriomenetelmät orgaanisen aineen pepsiinisellulaasiliukoisuus (OMS) ja sulamattoman kuidun pitoisuus (iNDF) sen sijaan ennustivat karkearehujen orgaanisen aineen sulavuuden riittävän tarkasti käytännön ruokinnansuunnittelua varten. Ennusteiden tarkkuus parani merkittävästi, kun analyysitulokset muunnettiin sulavuudeksi rehutyyppikohtaisia korjausyhtälöitä käyttäen eli erikseen ensimmäisestä sadosta ja jälkikasvusta tehdyille nurmisäilörehuille, palkokasvisäilörehuille ja kokoviljasäilörehuille. Rehutyyppikohtaiset korjausyhtälöt ovat tilasäilörehujen D-arvon määrityksen taustalla Artturi-analyysissä. Tässä kirjoituksessa esitettyihin yhtälöihin perustuen on myös laadittu MS Excel –pohjainen tiedosto, joka on käytettävissä Artturi®- verkkopalvelussa (www.mtt.fi/artturi). Kuidun (NDF) ja sulamattoman kuidun (iNDF) määrityksen kautta rehun orgaaninen aine saadaan jaettua kolmeen biologisesti mielekkääseen osaan: NDS (orgaaninen aine - kuitu), potentiaalisesti sulava kuitu (NDF - iNDF) ja iNDF. Solunsisällysaineiden todellinen sulavuus on lähes täydellinen ja sen vaihtelu on hyvin pientä. Kuidun sulavuus sen sijaan on selvästi vähäisempää ja vaihtelevampaa, eli rehujen sulavuuden määrityksessä oleellista on nimenomaan kuidun pitoisuuden ja sulavuuden selvittäminen. Rehutyyppikohtaiset summatiiviset mallit ennustivat karkearehujen D-arvon lähes yhtä hyvin kuin OMS ja iNDF. Kun koko aineistoa tarkasteltiin yhdessä, summatiiviset mallit olivat parempia kuin iNDF ja erityisesti OMS. Tutkimuksen tuloksena käytännön tilarehujen analytiikka on merkittävästi tarkentunut, kun NIRS-kalibroinnin referenssimenetelmän luotettavuutta on pystytty parantamaan. Aikaisempi ensimmäisen sadon D-arvon aliarvostus ja jälkisadon yliarvostus on saatu poistettua. Analyysin tarkkuudessa ollaan lähestymässä lampailla tehtävien sulavuuskokeiden keskimääräistä satunnaisvirhettä, joka on teoreettinen minimivirhe, johon rehujen sulavuusmittauksissa voidaan päästä.

Lehmien tuotantokyvyn jalostus on johtanut paitsi tuotosten niin myös lehmien elopainon ja syöntikyvyn lisääntymiseen. Syöntikyvyn lisääntyminen ei kuitenkaan ole riittävä kattamaan suurempien tuotosten ja kookkaampien eläinten ylläpidon vaatimaa energiatarvetta, joten lehmät joutuvat lypsykauden alkussa mobilisoimaan puuttuvan energian kudosvarastoistaan. Tästä johtuen lehmien energiatase (EB) on lypsykauden alussa lähes poikkeuksetta negatiivinen. Runsas kudosvarastojen mobilisointi ei ole suotavaa, sillä se johtaa usein heikentyneeseen hedelmällisyyteen ja lisääntyneeseen sairastavuuteen. Energiataseen laskemista varten tarvitaan paitsi tuotos- ja elopainotiedot niin myös tiedot rehunsyönnistä ja rehujen koostumuksesta (EB= syöty energia – maidon energia – ylläpitoenergia). Rehun syöntikyvyn tai syöntitietojen perusteella lasketun EB huomioiminen jalostusvalinnassa on ongelmallista, koska syödyn rehun määrän luotettava mittaaminen tilatasolla on nykyisin menetelmin hankalaa. Energiataseen huomioiminen jalostusvalinnassa edellyttääkin helpompaa menetelmää taseen arvioimiseen. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää kuntoluokan ja elopainon muutoksen sekä maidon rasva-valkuaisuhteen (R-V suhde) käyttökelpoisuutta EB indikaattorina. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu MTTn Rehtijärven ASMO-karjassa vuosina 1998-2001 tehdyissä ruokintakokeisssa kerätystä datasta. Kokeissa oli kaikkiaan 146 ensikkoa. Kokeissa lehmiä ruokittiin seosrehulla, joka sisälsi säilörehua ja väkirehua sekä kahdessa kokeessa myös tuoreleikettä 100 g/ kg ka. Koeruokinnat poikkesivat toisistaan dieetin väkirehu- ja valkuaispitoisuuden suhteen. Keskimäärin väkirehua oli koedieeteissä 470 g/kg ka ja se vaihteli koeasetelman mukaan 450 – 570 g/kg ka. Seosten väkirehun valkuaispitoisuus puolestaan vaihteli 170 –210 g/kg ka. Koeaineisto sisälsi ensikoiden viikoittaiset keskimääräiset rehunsyönti- ja tuotostiedot. Maidon pitoisuudet oli määritetty neljän viikon välein. Elopaino perustui rinnanympärysmittauksiin, rinnanympärys mitattiin koekaudella 5-7 kertaa kokeesta riippuen. Kuntoluokka arvioitiin neljän viikon välein. Havaintojen perusteella eläimille laskettiin viikoittaiset EB. EB-laskuissa energiantarve ylläpitoon ja maidontuotantoon laskettiin MTT 2006 Rehutaulukot ja Ruokintasuositukset- julkaisussa annettujen ylläpito ja maidontuotanto energiantarvekaavojen mukaan. Laskettu keskimääräinen EB oli ensimmäisinä laktaatioviikkoina selvästi negatiivinen ollen alhaisimmillaan -31 MJ ME/pv. Positiiviseksi energiatase muuttui keskimäärin viikolla 11. Keskimääräiset elopainon ja kuntoluokan muutokset tukivat hyvin laskettua EB:tta. Elopaino laski aina viikolle 9 ja kääntyi nousuun viikolla 12. Kuntoluokka oli alhaisimmillaan viikolla 10, jonka jälkeen lähti hitaaseen nousuun. Elopainon muutoksen, kuntoluokan muutoksen sekä maidon R-Vsuhteen korrelaatio laskettuun EB oli kohtalainen. Rasva-valkuaissuhteella korrelaatio oli vierova ja kuntoluokka ja elopainon muutos olivat positiivisessa yhteydessä EB. Elopainon muutoksen ja EB:n välinen korrelaatio oli hieman alhaisempi kuin R-Vsuhteen ja kuntoluokan muutoksen korrelaatio EB:een. Regressio-analyyseissä testattiin eläimen elopainon, kuntoluokan, R-V suhteen, näissä tapahtuneen muutoksen sekä em. tekijöiden yhdysvaikutusten kykyä ennustaa ensimmäisen poikimisen jälkeisen koelypsyviikon energiatasetta. Parhain energiatasetta kuvaava regressio-yhtälö pystyi kuvaamaan vain 32.6 % EBn vaihtelusta. Tärkeimmät selittävät tekijät olivat R-V suhde ja kuntoluokan muutos.

Rehujen vapaaehtoisen syönnin arviointi on yksi ruokinnansuunnittelun tärkeimmistä asioista, koska syönnin vaihtelu on erittäin suurta. Se vaikuttaa lehmien ravintoaineiden saannin vaihteluun huomattavasti enemmän kuin esimerkiksi rehujen sulavien ravintoaineiden pitoisuuden vaihtelu. Rehujen vapaaehtoisen syönnin määrään vaikuttavat eläimen, ympäristön, rehuannoksen ja yksittäisten rehujen ominaisuudet ja näiden tekijöiden yhdysvaikutukset. Tässä artikkelissa esitetään ns. Tuotosvasteaineistoon perustuen suhteelliset säilörehun ja koko rehuannoksen syönti-indeksit, joiden perusteella voidaan arvioida säilörehun laadun sekä väkirehuruokinnan määrän ja laadun vaikutuksia rehujen syönnin suhteelliseen muutokseen tilanteissa, joissa ruokinta perustuu vapaaseen säilörehun syöttöön tai seosrehuruokintaan. Säilörehun syönti-indeksi suurenee, kun säilörehun sulavuus (D-arvo) suurenee ja käymislaatu paranee (kokonaishappojen pitoisuus pienenee). Kuiva-ainepitoisuuden vaikutus on käyräviivainen siten, että syönti on suurimmillaan kun säilörehun kuiva-ainepitoisuus on n. 420 g/kg KA. Ensimmäisen sadon rehua syödään enemmän kuin koostumukseltaan samanlaista mutta jälkisadosta tehtyä rehua. Palkokasveja tai kokoviljasäilörehua sisältävän säilörehun vapaaehtoinen syönti on suurempi kuin pelkistä nurmiheinistä tehdyn koostumukseltaan vastaavan säilörehun. Vaikutukset ovat käyräviivaisia ja yhtälöitä kannattaa käyttää siten, että korkeintaan puolet säilörehun kuiva-aineesta on muita kasvilajeja myös tilanteissa, joissa niiden pitoisuus todellisuudessa on suurempi. Väkirehuannoksen suurentaminen vähensi säilörehun vapaaehtoista syöntiä siten, että korvaussuhde [vapaasti syötetyn säilörehun syönnin väheneminen, kun väkirehun saantia lisätään (kg KA/kg KA)] oli keskimäärin 0.47. Korvaussuhde ei kuitenkaan ollut lineaarinen vaan säilörehun syönti vähentyi enemmän kun väkirehuannokset olivat suuria. Väkirehun valkuaispitoisuuden suureneminen lisäsi säilörehun syöntiä käyräviivaisesti, mutta valkuaisen hajoavuuden lisääntyminen vähensi sitä. Väkirehun kuitupitoisuuden suureneminen lisäsi, mutta rasvapitoisuuden suureneminen vähensi säilörehun vapaaehtoista syöntiä. Väkirehun energiapitoisuuden muutokset lehmien energian saantiin ovat siis vapaalla säilörehuruokinnalla odotettua vähäisempiä. Yhdistämällä säilörehun ja väkirehun syönti-indeksit voidaan arvioida koko rehuannoksen syöntipotentiaali. Säilörehun ja koko rehuannoksen syönti-indeksejä voidaan hyödyntää kun arvioidaan, miten paljon rehuannoksen syönti muuttuu sen koostumusta muutettaessa. Säilörehuerän vaihtamisen yhteydessä voidaan syönti-indeksejä tarkastelemalla valita väkirehuannos siten, että kokonaissyönti ja maitotuotos pysyvät halutulla tasolla. Syönti-indeksien laskemiseen on Artturi-verkkopalvelussa (www.mtt.fi/artturi) käytettävissä laskurit. Rehuannoksen koostumuksen vaikutusten tunteminen lehmien vapaaehtoiseen syöntiin tekee mahdolliseksi lehmien ravintoaineiden saannin ja maidontuotannon mallintamisen ja mallien käytön ruokinnan optimoinnissa. Kun rehuannoksen vaikutukset syöntiin on mallinnettu, on jatkotutkimuksissa mahdollista selvittää eläintekijöiden vaikutusta syöntiin.

Intensiivinen kotieläintalous ja sen alueellinen keskittyminen ovat keskeisiä tekijöitä maatalouden vesistökuormituksen kannalta. Empiiristen kenttäaineistojen mukaan maitotilojen fosforin (P) että typen (N) porttitaseet ovat selvästi ylijäämäiset Suomessa. Intensiiviseen karjatalouteen, erityisesti maidontuotantoon, kohdistuukin tulevaisuudessa entistä suurempi paine vähentää ravinnepäästöjä, jotta sisä- ja murtovesien rehevöitymiskehitys voitaisiin katkaista. Potentiaaliset peltoviljelyn ravinnehuuhtoumat ovat sidoksissa ravinnetaseeseen, vaikka lyhyellä aikavälillä (satovuosi) yhteys ei välttämättä ole kovin voimakas. Pidemmällä aikavälillä ravinnepäästöjä ei voida vähentää, ellei ravinneylijäämiä voida alentaa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli 1) mallintaa maitotilan P- ja N-kierto ja 2) testata mallin toimivuus riippumattomalla kenttäaineistolla. Tavoitteena oli, että mallin avulla voidaan kvantitatiivisesti estimoida maitotilan ravinnetase ja simuloida erilaisten peltoviljelyn ja maidontuotannon vaihtoehtojen vaikutuksia ravinnetaseisiin. Maitotilamalli koostuu viidestä eri alamallista: karjan uudistus (1), maidontuotanto (2), karjanlanta (3), rehuviljely (4) sekä ravinnetaseet (5). Kasvinviljelyosiossa estimoidaan viljeltyjen kasvien sadot ja sadon sisältämä N- ja P-pitoisuus. Satofunktiot estimoitiin kotimaisten ruutusatokokeiden perusteella siten, että N- ja P-lannoituksen vaikutus kasvien satoon huomioitiin erillisinä. P-lannoitusvasteen oletettiin riippuvan maan P-luvusta. Karjamallissa estimoidaan tietyn lehmämäärän tarvitsema nuorkarjan määrä, kun kaikki tilan eläimet kasvatetaan itse ja lehmien poiston osuus ja poikimisväli vaihtelevat. Simulointi rakennettiin Powersim –ohjelmalla. Ruokintamalli rakennettiin ympärivuotiselle säilörehuruokinnalle. Nuorkarjan tarvitsema rehumäärä laskettiin ruokintasuositusten mukaan, ja erotuksella saatiin lehmille jäävä rehusatomäärä. Lehmien tarvitsema rehumäärä laskettiin voimassa olevia ruokintasuosituksia noudattaen, mutta siten että normeja on mahdollista muuttaa eri simuloinneissa. Lehmien syöntipotentiaali mallinnettiin erikseen eläintekijöistä (tuotospotentiaali, elopaino) ja dieettitekijöistä (karkearehun laatu ja väkirehuruokinta) riippuvaksi. Lehmien dieetti optimoitiin pienimmän rehuannoksen hinnan perusteella keskimääräiselle tuotostasolle laktaation aikana ottaen huomioon lehmien syöntipotentiaali, tuotostaso sekä käytössä olevien rehujen laatu ja hinta. Maidontuotanto ja maidon koostumus laskettiin energian ja valkuaisen saannin mukaan perustuen todellisiin tuotosvasteisiin. Ravinnetaselaskennassa estimoidaan maitoon, eläimiin ja lantaan jakautuvat ravinteet, ja lasketaan tilan ravinteiden porttitaseet ottaen huomioon kasvien, maidon ja eläinten myynnit tilalta ulos ja ravinteiden ostot mm. lannoitteissa ja rehuissa. Mallin laskennat ja optimonnit tehtiin MS-excel taulukkolaskentaohjelmalla. Malli testattiin 26 maitotilan aineistolla, joilta oli käytettävissä 1-4 satovuoden tulokset ravinnetaseista. Tulokset osoittivat, että mallilla estimoidut P- ja N-tilataseet korreloivat hyvin havaittujen tilataseiden kanssa (P: R2 = 0.800 ja N: R2 = 0.876). Sekä mallilla simuloitujen että havaittujen tulosten perusteella tilalle ostettu fosforilannoitekilo lisäsi P-ylijäämää noin 1,2 kg/ha. Tämä johtuu todennäköisesti siitä, että tiloille ostettujen rehujen ja lannan fosforia ei huomioida riittävästi viljeltävien kasvien lannoituksessa. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että maitotilan kasvinviljelyn ja maidontuotannon integroiva systeemimalli on hyvin käyttökelpoinen työkalu pyrittäessä löytämään tehostamiskeinoja ravinteiden hyväksikäytölle. Jatkotutkimuksissa mallia täydennetään laidunkierrolla ja nurmirehujen korjuustrategialla.

The aim of this work was to develop an index describing the relative intake of the total diet by dairy cows, and hence the ability to predict intake responses to changes in both forage and concentrate variables. An evaluation of concentrate factors affecting silage dry matter (DM) intake of dairy cows was conducted based on dietary treatment means from milk production experiments. The data were divided into four subsets according to concentrate treatments used within the experiments: the amount of concentrate supplementation (n = 217), protein supplementation (n = 336), carbohydrate composition (n = 114) and fat concentration of the concentrate (n = 29). The data were subjected to mixed-model regression analysis. Increased concentrate DM intake (CDMI) decreased silage DM intake (SDMI) quadratically. The substitution rate (substitution of silage DM for concentrate DM) increased with improved silage intake potential. SDMI increased quadratically with concentrate protein intake, the response being negatively related to the effective protein degradability (EPD) of concentrates. Replacement of starchy concentrate ingredients with fibrous supplements had a small positive effect on silage intake, whereas increased concentrate fat concentration slightly decreased SDMI. The outcome of concentrate factors influencing total DM intake (TDMI) was used to create a relative CDMI index as follows: CDMI index = 100 + 10 × [(CDMI − 0.1629 × CDMI − 0.01882 × CDMI2 − 5.49) + ((0.9474 × CCPI − 0.4965 × CCPI2) − 2.017 × (CEPD − 0.74)) + 0.00225 × (CNDF − 250) − 0.0103 × (40 − Cfat) − 0.00058 × (CDMI − 8.0) × (SDMI index − 100)], where CDMI = concentrate DM intake (kg/day), CCPI = supplementary concentrate CP intake (kg/day; CP>170 g/kg DM), CEPD = concentrate EPD (g/g), CNDF = concentrate NDF concentration (g/kg DM), Cfat = concentrate fat concentration (g/kg DM) and SDMI index is the relative intake potential of silage (Huhtanen, Rinne and Nousiainen 2007. Animal 1, 758–770). TDMI index was calculated as SDMI index + CDMI index − 100 to describe the relative intake potential of the total diet. For the whole data set (n = 943), one TDMI index unit was equivalent to 0.095 kg/day DM intake, i.e. close to the default value of 0.100 kg. The CDMI index explained proportionally 0.88 of the variation in TDMI within a study with a 0.27 kg/day residual mean-square error (n = 616). The corresponding values for the TDMI index were 0.81 and 0.37 kg/day (n = 943), respectively. The residual mean-square errors in cross-validation were marginally higher. The developed TDMI index can be used to estimate the intake responses to diet changes. It provides an improved basis for practical dairy cow ration formulation and economic evaluation.

In a random regression test-day model, environmental effects in addition to individual animal factors can be included and analyzed. Moreover, instead of herd-year classification of the management groups, the herd-test-day classification within the model better accounts for month-to-month short-term environmental variation in production and somatic cell count (SCC) traits. The herd management levels of milk yield (milk deviation from whole-country mean, kilograms/day), protein and fat concentration (protein and fat deviation, %), and SCC (SCC deviation, 1,000 cells/mL) are used in the dairy herd management Web application "Maitoisa" (in English, "Milky"). This management tool helps to recognize several management problems. For recognition of systematic patterns and single unusual test-days, a monthly time-trend analysis was developed to smooth the random fluctuations and display the yearly production pattern. In addition to analyzing single test-day deviations from the mean, modeled herd solutions assist users in identifying repeated phenomena and enable the forecasting of the management pattern for the subsequent year. The solutions are displayed either as tables or graphs plotted by calendar months. In addition to management effects of the farmer's own herd, he or she can request country or region percentiles to be displayed in the graphs. The Web service has been offered to farmers and dairy advisors since 2001, and it has proved to be a powerful tool for herd monitoring and planning.

The traditional milk quality concept reflects solely the dairy processors demands for raw milk quality. The quality criteria included typically concentration of fat and protein as well as milk hygiene (total plate and somatic cell counts) and possible some other physical traits, which still form the milk payment scheme on most countries. The consumer awareness of e.g., animal health and welfare and tightened customer demands for traceability of food items in the international trade has resulted in renewed milk quality concept. Total Quality Management systems are important tools for dairy industry to achieve customers’ and consumers’ trust for the good management practise of the whole milk chain and safe dairy products.

An evaluation of the factors affecting silage dry-matter intake (SDMI) of dairy cows was conducted based on dietary treatment means. The data were divided into six subsets based on the silage treatments used in the experiments: concentration of digestible organic matter in dry matter (D-value) influenced by the maturity of grass ensiled (n = 81), fermentation quality influenced by silage additives (n = 240), dry matter (DM) concentration influenced by wilting of grass prior to ensiling (W; n = 85), comparison of silages made from primary growth or regrowth of grass (n = 46), and replacement of grass silage with legume (L; n = 53) or fermented whole-crop cereal (WC; n = 37) silages. The data were subjected to the mixed model regression analysis. Both silage D-value and fermentation quality significantly affected SDMI. The average effects of D-value and total acid (TA) concentration were 17.0 g and − 12.8 per 1 g/kg DM, respectively. At a given D-value, silage neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) concentration tended to decrease SDMI. Silage TA concentration was the best fermentation parameter predicting SDMI. Adding other parameters into the multivariate models did not improve the fit and the slopes of the other parameters remained insignificant. Total NDF intake was curvilinearly related to silage D-value the maximum intake being reached at a D-value of 640 g/kg DM. Results imply that physical fill is not limiting SDMI of highly digestible grass silages and that both physical and metabolic factors constrain total DM intake in an interactive manner. Silage DM concentration had an independent curvilinear effect on SDMI. Replacing primary growth silage with regrowth, L or WC silages affected SDMI significantly, the response to regrowth silage being linearly decreasing and to L and WC quadratically increasing. The outcome of factors affecting SDMI was used to update the relative SDMI index as follows: SDMI index = 100+10 × [(D-value − 680) × 0.0170 − (TA − 80) × 0.0128+(0.0198 × (DM − 250) − 0.00002364 × (DM2 − 250 2)) − 0.44 × a+4.13 × b − 2.58 × b2+5.90 × c − 6.14 × c2 − 0.0023 × (550 − NDF)], where a, b and c represent the proportions (0–1) of regrowth, L or WC silages from total silage DM. For the whole data set, one index unit corresponded to the default value of 0.10 kg in SDMI. The SDMI index explained proportionally 0.852 of the variation in SDMI with 0.34 kg DM per day residual. The present re-evaluation of a dataset of systematically collected laboratory analyses and in vivo digestibility information for several types of silages gives convincing evidence of the biological weaknesses of feed characterisation based on the proximate feed analysis. The problems include intrinsic failures of the analysis in describing cause-response relationships between forage composition and digestibility, and heavy dependency of the equations on forage specific and environmental factors. It is concluded that proximate analysis is not suitable for characterisation of neither forages nor concentrate feedstuffs. In vitro pepsin-cellulase solubility of organic matter (OMS) and concentration of indigestible neutral detergent fibre (iNDF) predicted forage organic matter digestibility (OMD) with an acceptable accuracy for practical feed evaluation purposes provided that forage type dependent correction equations were employed. The revised detergent system dividing forage dry matter (DM) into almost completely available neutral detergent solubles (NDS), and insoluble residue (neutral detergent fibre, NDF) shows potential for future development. The combined use of long-term in situ ruminal incubation and NDF fractionation can be used to divide forage DM into three biologically meaningful fractions: NDS, iNDF and potentially digestible NDF (pdNDF). The summative models can then be used to predict forage D-value, i.e. apparently digestible organic matter in forage (g kg-1 DM). The models sum digestible NDS, which can be determined by Lucas equation, and digestible NDF (dNDF), which is the amount of pdNDF that is actually digested during any specific fermentation or retention time. Forage type specific summative models were as good as regression equations based on OMS or iNDF in predicting forage D-value and general summative models gave better results than general equations based on iNDF and especially OMS. If the goal is to reduce prediction error of D-value below 15 g kg-1 DM, forage type specific prediction equations should be used regardless of whether they are based on OMS, iNDF or summative models. Another option in the future may be dynamic models, which can incorporate simultaneously the two important dynamic processes constraining feed digestion in ruminants: the rates of NDF passage and degradation (kd). However, a vital prerequisite to employ dynamic models in practical feed evaluation is that iNDF and kd can be easily and reliably determined from on-farm forages. Dynaamisten mallien käyttö edellyttää kuitenkin sitä, että rehuista voidaan helposti ja luotettavasti määrittää iNDF-pitoisuus ja kuidun sulatusnopeus. Maatilarehujen iNDF-määritys NIRS-menetelmällä toteutuu Suomessa lähiaikoina, mutta kuidun sulatusnopeuden määritys vaatii vielä lisätyötä.

Fifty primiparous Finnish Ayrshire cows were used in 2×2 factorial study. The factors were the protein-feeding strategy: constant (cCP) or variable (vCP) protein content in concentrate during lactation and the use of a commercial health product from 2 weeks pre- to 8 weeks postpartum. On treatment cCP, the CP content of the concentrate was 180 g/kg in dry matter (DM) throughout the lactation, and on vCP treatment, the CP content was 210, 180 and 150 g/kg DM during lactation days 0–100, 101–200 and 201–305, respectively. The concentrate blends included barley, oats, rapeseed meal, molassed sugar beet pulp and minerals and vitamins. Grass silage and ensiled wet sugar beet pulp (100 g/kg DM in TMR) were used as forage. The calculation of whole-farm nutrient balance is an effective and simple method for estimating the potential nutrient loading from dairy farming into the environment. In Finland, however, the published results based on larger number of farms are still lacking. In this study whole-farm nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) balances on Finnish dairy farms were studied based on short-cut data for the year 2002. The survey was targeted to 1260 dairy farms, located all over Finland. Of the 386 replies received, 319 were used for subsequent statistical analyses. The association between selected farm variables and nutrient balance was studied using regression analysis and a sensitivity coefficient was calculated for each regression slope. The average (± standard deviation) whole-farm nutrient balance for N and P was 109 (±41.3) and 12 (±7.2) kg ha-1, respectively. The most responsive factors affecting the nutrient balances were total nutrient and fertilizer import per ha, followed by animal density, milk export per ha and concentrate import per ha. The results suggested that nutrient surpluses could be controlled more easily in combined crop and milk than in specialised milk production. It is concluded that nutrient surplus on Finnish dairy farms is markedly lower than that on areas with intensive production in central European countries. However, when nutrient balances were extrapolated to comparable production intensity as in central Europe, the level of the surpluses was equal., Intensiivisessä maidontuotannossa on tärkeää löytääkeinoja hehtaarikohtaisten ravinneylijäämien pienentämiseksi. Ravinteiden tilataseet ovat ulkomaisten tutkimusten mukaan yksinkertainen ja käytäntöön soveltuva menetelmä arvioida maidontuotannon aiheuttamaa ravinnepäästöpotentiaalia. Tässä tutkimuksessa laskettiin typen ja fosforin hehtaarikohtaiset porttitaseet suomalaisille lypsykarjatiloille vuoden 2002 tiedoista. Tutkimus suoritettiin kirjekyselynä (n = 1260), jonka tuloksena lopulliseen aineistoon saatiin 319 tilahavaintoa. Kyselyyn vastanneista 386 tilasta (vastausprosentti 31) poistettiin luonnonmukaisen viljelyn tilat (n = 16), fosforipitoisia kivijauheita käyttäneet tilat (n = 24), epätäydellisesti täytetyt kaavakkeet (n = 8) ja poikkeavat havainnot (n = 19). Ravinnetaseet laskettiin tilalle tuotujen ja sieltä vietyjen ravinnemäärien erotuksena. Ilmalaskeumaa (N ja P), typen haihtumista ja biologista N-sidontaa ei huomioitu. Valittujen tilamuuttujien yhteyttä ravinnetaseeseen tutkittiin regressioanalyysin avulla. Herkkyyskertoimien mukaan typen ja fosforin hehtaarikohtaisia taseita voidaan parhaiten hallita pienentämällä kokonaisravinnepanoksia hehtaaria kohden, vähentämällä hehtaarikohtaista lannoitteiden tuontia sekä alentamalla eläintiheyttä, maidontuotannon intensiteettiä sekä väkirehujen tuontia pinta-alaa kohden. Tulosten mukaan ravinteiden ylijäämä on helpommin hallittavissa harjoittamalla tilalla kasvinviljelyä pelkän maidontuotannon lisäksi. Suomalaisilla lypsykarjatiloilla ravinteiden ylijäämä pinta-alaa kohti on pienempi kuin Keski-Euroopassa intensiivisen maidontuotannon alueilla. Mikäli ravinneylijäämät kuitenkin suhteutetaan keskieurooppalaiselle maidontuotannon intensiteettitasolle, muodostuvat ylijäämät yhtä suuriksi. Jotta löydettäisiin tehokkaita keinoja lypsykarjatilojen ravinteiden käytön parantamiseksi, tarvitaan lisää tutkimusta ravinteiden tehokkaasta hyväksikäytöstä tilatasolla myös Suomessa. Tilan ravinnekierrossa kriittisiksi tekijöiksi muodostuvat silloin ravinteiden siirtäminen satoon, rehun muuttaminen maidoksi ja lannan muuttaminen kasvualustaksi.

A dataset of grasses and respective silages was collected by systematically varying the harvesting time in primary growth (n = 27) and in regrowth (n = 25). The swards were mixtures of timothy and meadow fescue. The grasses were ensiled unwilted with formic acid. Fixed or mixed regression procedure of SAS was used to investigate the relationships between composition of grasses and respective silages and to develop regression equations for predicting silage in vivo organic matter digestibility (OMD) from herbage pepsincellulase organic matter solubility (OMS). The silages were well preserved showing only limited amounts of secondary fermentation products. The silage dry matter (DM), crude protein and neutral detergent fibre contents could be estimated relatively accurately from grass variables as judged by relatively small prediction errors (RMSEmixed = 3.6, 8.1 and 18 g (kg DM)-1, respectively). The average OMS of grasses was significantly higher than that of respective silages (779 vs. 756 g (kg DM)-1, P < 0.001). However, silage OMD was equally accurately predicted from grass and silage OMS (RMSEmixed = 15.1 and 15.8 g (kg DM)-1, respectively). When predicting silage OMD from OMS, specific equations should be used for primary growth and regrowth silages, because the slopes and intercepts of correction equations were numerically though not statistically significantly different. It is concluded that silage composition and digestibility can be reliably predicted from herbage characteristics provided that silages are well preserved with moderate ensiling losses., Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin mahdollisuuksia ennustaanurmisäilörehun koostumus ja sulavuus säilörehun raaka-aineena käytetyn ruohon koostumus- ja in vitro #NIMI? ja nurminadan seoskasvustoista tehdyistä säilörehuista, joista 27 oli ensimmäisestä sadosta ja 25 jälkikasvusta. Ruohojen pepsiini-sellulaasiliukoisuus oli merkitsevästi korkeampi kuin säilörehujen [779 vs. 756 g (kg kuivaainetta)- 1], mikä johtuu pääasiassa säilönnän aikana tapahtuvan sulavan orgaanisen aineen hävikistä hengitys-, käymis- ja puristenestetappioiden takia. Säilörehun sulavuus pystyttiin kuitenkin arvioimaan yhtä hyvin ruohon ja säilörehun pepsiini-sellulaasiliukoisuuden perusteella. Ensi- ja jälkikasvusta tehdyille rehuille pitäisi käyttää eri korjausyhtälöitä pepsiini-sellulaasiliukoisuuden muuntamisessa sulavuudeksi, sillä regressioyhtälöiden vakiot ja kulmakertoimet poikkesivat lukuarvoiltaan selvästi toisistaan. Säilörehun koostumus ja sulavuus voitiin arvioida luotettavasti raaka-aineena käytetyn ruohon perusteella, kun aineistona käytettiin hyvin säilyneitä säilörehuja.

Samples of grass silages harvested at different maturities of primary growth (n=27) and regrowth (n=25) of timothy-meadow fescue swards, and samples from commercial dairy farms (n=42) were used to explore the potential of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) in predicting indigestible neutral detergent fibre (INDF) and digestible neutral detergent fibre (DNDF) content. The silages were analysed for cell wall (neutral detergent fibre, NDF) composition and incubated in situ for 12 days in nylon bags to determine INDF and DNDF. Dried and milled silage samples were scanned with a spectrophotometer over the wavelength range from 400 to 2498 nm. After mathematical treatments (standard normal variate transformation, detrending (SNV-D) and first-order derivatization), the spectra were correlated to NDF, INDF and DNDF of silages, and used to develop NIRS prediction equations by modified partial least squares technique. Cross validation was employed to test the robustness of NIR calibrations. As a comparison, several regression equations using chemical components as predictors were developed to predict silage INDF. The INDF content of grass silages was dependent on harvest, being higher for the regrowth than for the primary growth silages (83 g/kg dry matter (DM) versus 118 g/kg DM). The effect of total mixed ration (TMR) with constant (TMR1) or decreasing (TMR3) proportion of concentrate in dry matter (DM) and with different crude protein (CP) content of concentrate (170 or 200 g/kg DM) on the performance of 51 first parity Ayrshire cows was studied. On TMR1 diet the forage to concentrate ratio in DM was 55:45 throughout the lactation. On TMR3 the forage to concentrate ratio was 45:55, 55:45 and 65:35 during the lactation days 0–100, 101–200 and 201–305, respectively. There was no significant interaction between feeding strategy (TMR1 or TMR3) and CP content of the concentrate on the performance parameters studied. Nurmiheinien ensikasvun korjuuajan vaikutus rehun syönti- ja tuotantopotentiaalin on erittäin suuri ja melko hyvin tunnettu. Säilörehun syönti lisääntyy keskimäärin 0,16 kg ka ja maitotuotos 0,3-0,5 kg päivässä, kun ensikasvusta tehdyn nurmisäilörehun D-arvo paranee 10 g/kg. Keskimää­räisissä kasvuolosuhteissa alkukesällä nurmiheinien D-arvo huononee 5 g/kg päivässä. Merkittävä osa karjatilan nurmirehusta valmistetaan nurmen jälkikasvusta, joten myös sen laadulla on suuri merkitys. Jälkikasvun laadun muutoksista ja rehun tuotantovaikutuksesta on huomattavasti vähemmän tutkimustietoa. Tässä kokeessa tuotettiin sulavuudeltaan selvästi toisistaan poikkeavia säilörehuja ensikasvussa ja jälkikasvussa ja selvitettiin niiden maidontuotantovaikutusta. Koesäilörehuina oli kuusi kesällä 2002 tehtyä timotei-nurminatasäilörehua. Kaksi rehua tehtiin nurmen ensikasvusta: 5.6. (aikainen ensikasvu, A) ja 17.6. (myöhäinen ensikasvu, M). Osa molemmista jälkikasvualoista korjattiin loppukesällä 29.7. (aikainen jälkikasvu eli rehut AA ja MA) ja osa 12.8. (myöhäinen jälkikasvu eli rehut AM ja MM). Säilörehut säilöttiin laakasiiloihin ja syötettiin maidontuotantokokeessa, jossa oli 24 ay-lehmää. Koemallina oli cyclic change over. Säilörehujen D-arvo määritettiin pässeillä sonnan kokonaiskeruumenetelmällä. Ensikasvussa korjuun viivästyminen huononsi säilörehun D-arvoa keskimäärin 5,0 g /vrk, joka on samaa tasoa kuin aiemmissa aineistoissa. D-arvo huononi myös toisessa sadossa, kun korjuu viivästyi (AA→AM 3,6 g/vrk ja MA→MM ja 2,5 g/vrk). Parhaankaan jälkikasvurehun D-arvo ei ollut kovin korkea (664 g/kg), vaikka sen kasvuaika edellisestä niitosta oli vain 42 vrk. Lehmät söivät aikaisin korjattua ensikasvun A-rehua erittäin paljon (17,4 kg ka/pv alemmalla väkirehutasolla) ja tuottivat runsaasti maitoa. Säilörehun D-arvon huononeminen ensikasvussa 10 g/kg:lla vähensi lehmien säilörehun kuiva-aineen syöntiä 0,48 kg ja EKM:n tuotantoa 0,60 kg. Ensi- ja jälkikasvurehujen maidontuotantovaikutusten suora vertailu on hankalaa, koska kasvien kehitysvaihetta on vaikea vakioida. Jos verrataan ensikasvun jälkimmäistä rehua M ja kaikkien jälkikasvurehujen keskiarvoa, ovat rehujen keskeiset laatuparametrit varsin samanlaisia. Lehmät söivät kuitenkin ensikasvun säilörehua enemmän (13,33 vs. 12,52 kg ka/vrk) ja EKM-tuotos oli suurempi (32,6 vs. 31,1 kg/vrk). Korvaussuhde [säilörehun syönnin väheneminen (kg ka), kun väkirehuannos lisääntyi 1 kg ka] oli keskimäärin 0,47. Keskimääräisissä korvaussuhteissa ensi- ja jälkikasvun rehuja syötettäessä ei ollut eroja, mutta ensikasvussa korvaussuhde oli huomattavasti suurempi hyvin sulavaa A-rehua syötettäessä kuin M-rehulla. Väkirehuannoksen suurentaminen lisäsi maitotuotosta kaikilla säilörehuilla. Vähiten väkirehulisäys vaikutti A-säilörehua syövillä lehmillä. EKM-vaste oli jälkikasvurehuilla keskimäärin 0,92 kg EKM/lisätty väkirehu kg ka. Eri väkirehutasoilla D-arvon muutos vaikutti eri tavoin maitotuotokseen. Esimerkiksi ensikasvurehuilla energiakorjatun maidon vaste oli 0,75 kg EKM / 10 g D-arvoa, kun väkirehutaso oli 8 kg. Kun väkirehua annettiin 12 kg vaste oli paljon pienempi eli 0,43 kg EKM/10 g D-arvoa. Tämän kokeen tulokset tukevat käsitystä, että ensikasvusta tehdyn säilörehun tuotantovaikutus on hieman parempi kuin muuten laadultaan vastaavan, mutta nurmen jälkikasvusta tehdyn säilörehun. Säilörehun D-arvon lasku vähensi maitotuotosta selvemmin, kun lehmille syötettiin ensikasvurehua. Väkirehuannoksen suurentaminen lisäsi maitotuotosta enemmän, kun säilörehun sulavuus oli huonompi. Säilörehun laadulla on siis selkeä vaikutus lehmien maidontuotantoon ja muun muassa tietyn tuotoksen saavuttamiseen tarvittavan väkirehumäärän tarpeeseen. Tämän kokeen perusteella ei voi kuitenkaan suositella tiettyä korjuustrategiaa. Kesän 2002 poikkeukselliset sääolosuhteet ovat voineet vaikuttaa erityisesti jälkikasvurehujen laadun kehitykseen. Lisäksi eri korjuustrategioiden vaikutuksia lypsykarjatilan taloudelliseen tulokseen pitäisi tarkastella laajasti yksittäisen tilan omien tuotanto-olosuhteiden puitteissa. Korjuustrategian valinta tilalla riippuu mm. käytettävissä olevasta nurmialasta, lehmämäärän joustomahdollisuuksista, väkirehun ruokintastrategiasta jne.

Prediction of organic matter (OM) digestibility (OMD) of primary growth and regrowth grass silages was studied based on their chemical composition, pepsin-cellulase solubility of OM (OMS) and indigestible neutral detergent fibre (INDF) content. Twenty-five primary and 28 regrowth silages were harvested from mixed timothy ( Phleum pratense ) meadow fescue ( Festuca pratensis ) or timothy cocksfoot ( Dactylis glomerata ) swards by varying the dates of the first and second harvest. In vivo OMD was measured with sheep and indigestible NDF was determined by 12 days ruminal incubation of forage samples in nylon bags using dairy cows fed a forage-based diet. Chemical composition of the silages was significantly correlated with digestibility, but single regression equations led to an unacceptable prediction accuracy of OMD (RMSE>40 g/kg DM). Pepsin-cellulase solubility reliably predicted OMD of primary growth silages (RMSE = 10.8 g/kg DM), but was less accurate for regrowth silages (RMSE = 25.9 g/kg). The prediction accuracy of OMD could be improved by using different equations for the two silage types. Indigestible NDF predicted OMD more accurately than OMS for all silages and especially for the regrowth silages. In contrast to OMS, the relationship between INDF and OMD was similar for both silage types.

The performance of 45 primiparous Ayrshire cows fed total mixed ration (TMR) with constant (TMR1) or variable (TMR3) proportion of concentrate in dry matter was studied. On TMR1 treatment the forage to concentrate ratio of TMR was 53:47 in dry matter (DM) throughout the lactation. On TMR3 the forage to concentrate ratio increased during the lactation being 43:57, 53:47 and 63:37 on 0–100, 101–200 and 201–305 days post partum, respectively. The experimental period was 305 days of the first lactation. The feeding strategy had no significant effect on average milk yield. Data based on the mean treatment values from production studies in lactating dairy cows were used to estimate relationships between silage composition and silage dry matter intake (SDMI). Data from 21 studies were used to estimate relationships between D-value (g digestible organic matter in kg dry matter (DM)) and crude protein (CP) content, and SDMI. The silages were harvested at different maturities but using the same ensiling techniques within the study. Relationships between silage fermentation characteristics and SDMI were estimated using data from 47 studies. The silages were harvested at the same time from the same sward but using various additives. When factorial designs were used, silage data within each treatment (subexperiment) were recorded separately. The data sets included 125 D-value and 234 fermentation observations. Relationships between SDMI and silage parameters were analyzed using mixed model regression analyses with experiment as a fixed factor and subexperiment within experiment as a random factor. The ranges for silage CP concentration and D-value were 111 to 238 (S.D. 25.2) and 589 to 756 (S.D. 48.5) g/kg DM, respectively. An empirical regression model for the prediction of total dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows was developed and compared with four published intake models. The model was constructed to include both animal and dietary factors, which are known to affect DMI. For model development, a data set based on individual cow data from 10 change-over and four continuous milk production studies was collected (n = 1554). Relevant animal (live weight (LW), days in milk (DIM), parity and breed) and dietary (total and concentrate DMI, concentrate composition, forage digestibility and fermentation quality) data were collected. The model factors were limited to those that are available before the diets are fed to animals, that is, standardized energy corrected milk (sECM) yield, LW, DIM and diet quality (total diet DMI index (TDMI index)). As observed ECM yield is a function of both the production potential of the cow and diet quality, ECM yield standardized for DIM, TDMI index and metabolizable protein concentration was used in modelling. In the individual data set, correlation coefficients between sECM and TDMI index or DIM were much weaker (0.16 and 0.03) than corresponding coefficients with observed ECM (0.65 and 0.46), respectively. The model was constructed with a mixed model regression analysis using cow within trial as a random factor. The following mixed model was estimated for DMI prediction: DMI (kg DM/day) = −2.9 (±0.56)+0.258 (±0.011) × sECM (kg/day) + 0.0148 (±0.0009) × LW (kg) −0.0175 (±0.001) × DIM −5.85 (±0.41) × exp (−0.03 × DIM) + 0.09 (±0.002) × TDMI index. The mixed DMI model was evaluated with a treatment mean data set (207 studies, 992 diets), and the following relationship was found: Observed DMI (kg DM/day) = −0.10 (±0.33) + 1.004 (±0.019) × Predicted DMI (kg DM/day) with an adjusted residual mean square error of 0.362 kg/day. Evaluation of the residuals did not result in a significant mean bias or linear slope bias, and random error accounted for proportionally >0.99 of the error. In conclusion, the DMI model developed is considered robust because of low mean prediction error, accurate and precise validation, and numerically small differences in the parameter values of model variables when estimated with mixed or simple regression models. The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System was the most accurate of the four other published DMI models evaluated using individual or treatment mean data, but in most cases mean and linear slope biases were relatively high, and, interestingly, there were large differences in both mean and linear slope biases between the two data sets.

Neonatal dairy calves were randomly allotted to three colostrum feeding regimens with increasing intakes of immunoglobulins (Ig) on the first day of life. The control group was fed one litre of pooled colostrum (Ig intake 19.5 g). In two experimental groups, the pooled colostrum was supplemented with 0.5 or 1.5 litres of commercial Ig-concentrate, giving a total Ig intake of 52.7 and 119.0 g, respectively. Serum IgG, IgM and IgA levels increased linearly (p < 0.001) on day 2 post partum with the increasing Ig intake. The calculated mean Ig-absorption rate was 61% and decreased linearly for IgM (p = 0.051) and IgG (p = 0.078) with increasing Ig intake. At the highest Ig intake, serum IgG remained above 10 g/l during 30 days post partum. In the experimental groups, serum IgM and IgA decreased sharply during the first week of life and were relatively constant thereafter. In the control group, however, there was an increase in serum IgM after one week post partum, perhaps due to the in situ production of Ig. With the increasing Ig intake there was a small and non-significant tendency for better live weight gain (p = 0.286) and a lower incidence of diarrhoea (p = 0.421) during the first four weeks of life. It is concluded that the Ig-product tested is well absorbed during 24 hours post partum and it can be used either as a supplement to maternal colostrum when its quality is poor, or as a substitute when colostrum is not available.

The effects of age, sex, height, weight, and dimensions of the thorax on the vector magnetocardiogram (VMCG) were studied in 290 normal subjects. The effect of sex on 141 VMCG parameters was tested with the Mann-Whitney U test, and the effects of age and body dimensions on the male and female subjects were tested with the Kruskal-Wallis H test. Similar analyses were applied for a comparison of the vector electrocardiogram (VECG) in a subgroup of 200 normal subjects. Sex had the most pronounced effect on the VMCG, a total of 58% of the instantaneous time-normalized QRS and T amplitude parameters were significantly (P < .01) different in men and women (47% for the VECG). In women, the absolute VMCG amplitudes were, on average, about 60% of those in men. In the VECG, the corresponding portion was about 85%. In men and women, 50 and 26% of the time-normalized amplitude parameters, respectively, were significantly (P < .01) affected by age; the main effect was a decrease in most VMCG amplitudes with increasing age. In the VECG, the corresponding effect was not as statistically significant. The effect of constitutional variables of the body on the VMCG and VECG was, in most cases, not statistically significant. Multiple correlation analysis showed that the five noncardiac factors together explained, at most, 16 and 28% of the variability in the instantaneous, time-normalized QRS amplitudes for men and women, respectively. In the VECG, these figures were 13 and 18%, respectively. This study shows clearly that in the VMCG, a larger portion of normal variability is due to the effect of noncardiac factors than in the VECG. It is important to take sex and age into consideration when conducting studies of the clinical value of magnetocardiography.

This study examined the effects of primary growth (PG) and regrowth (RG) timothy-meadow fescue silages harvested at 2 stages of growth on feed intake, cell wall digestion and ruminal passage kinetics in lactating dairy cows. Four dairy cows equipped with rumen cannulas were used in a study designed as a 4 x 4 Latin square with 21-d periods. The experimental silages were offered ad libitum with 8 kg/d of concentrate. Ruminal digestion and passage kinetics were assessed by the rumen evacuation technique. Silages of PG were on average more digestible than RG silages. The concentration of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and indigestible NDF (iNDF) increased and the concentration of digestible organic matter in dry matter (DM) of silages decreased with advancing maturity in PG and RG. Cows consumed more feed DM, energy, and protein and produced more milk when fed PG diets rather than RG diets. Delaying the harvest decreased DM intake and milk production in PG and RG. There were no differences between PG and RG in rumen pH, ammonia N, or total volatile fatty acid concentrations. The intake of N, omasal canal flow of total nonammonia N and microbial N, excretion of N in feces, and ruminal true digestibility of N were higher for PG than for RG diets. The efficiency of microbial N synthesis was not different between PG and RG. Intake and omasal canal flow of organic matter, NDF, and potentially digestible NDF (pdNDF) were higher in PG than in RG. Whole-diet digestibility of organic matter, NDF, or pdNDF in the rumen or in the total tract was not different between PG and RG despite the higher digestibility of PG silages measured in sheep. Rumen pool sizes of crude protein and iNDF were lower for PG diets, whereas the pool size of pdNDF was higher for PG diets than for RG diets. The rate of passage of iNDF was higher for PG diets than for RG diets, with no difference between them in rate of digestion or passage of pdNDF. The lower milk production in cows fed regrowth grass silages compared with primary growth silages could be attributed to the lower silage DM intake potential. Chemical composition of the silages, rumen fill, digestion and passage kinetics of NDF, or the ratio of protein to energy in absorbed nutrients could not explain the differences in DM intake between silages made from primary and regrowth grass.

A meta-analysis based on published experiments with lactating dairy cows fed mainly grass silage-based diets was conducted to study the effects of intake, diet composition, and digestibility at a maintenance level of feeding on the apparent total diet digestibility. A data set that included a total of 497 dietary treatment means from 92 studies was collected and analyzed using mixed model regression analysis with a random study effect. Diet organic matter digestibility (OMD) in dairy cows at a production level (OMD(p)) was positively associated with OMD at maintenance (OMD(m)), but the slope was less than 1 (0.69). Diet OMD(p) decreased as feed intake increased, and diets with high OMD(m) exhibited greater depressions in digestibility with increased intake than did diets with low OMD(m). Digestibility of organic matter and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) increased as dietary crude protein concentration increased, whereas increased concentrate fat decreased digestibility. Replacement of grass silage with whole-crop cereal silage was associated with a quadratic decrease in diet digestibility. Metabolic fecal output, defined as fecal organic matter minus NDF, averaged 95.8 (SE = 0.65) g/kg of dry matter intake, and it was not influenced by intake or diet composition. Variation in OMD(p) in cows fed grass silage-based diets was therefore attributable to variation in dietary NDF concentration and NDF digestibility. Depression in digestibility of organic matter with increased intake was less than predicted by the National Research Council and Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein systems. The following 2-parameter model indicates that the difference between OMD estimated in sheep fed at maintenance compared with dairy cows at production level is related both to dry matter intake and digestibility at maintenance level: OMD(p) = 257 (+/-43) + 0.685 (+/-0.054) x OMD(m) (g/kg of dry matter) - 2.6 (+/-0.44) x dry matter intake (kg/d); adjusted residual mean square error = 8.4 g/kg. It was concluded that diet digestibility in dairy cows can be predicted accurately and precisely from digestibility estimated at maintenance intake in sheep by using regression models including animal and dietary factors.

A meta-analysis was conducted using data from dairy cow production studies to evaluate silage metabolizable protein (MP) concentrations. The data consisted of 397 treatment means in 130 comparisons, in which the effects of silage factors (e.g., date of harvest, wilting, silage additives) were investigated. Within a comparison, a fixed amount of the same concentrate was fed. A prerequisite of data to be included in the analysis was that silage dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ammonia N, lactic acid (LA), and total acid (TA) concentrations and digestibility were determined. A smaller data set (n = 248) comprised studies in which silage water-soluble N concentration was also analyzed. The supply of MP was estimated as amino acids absorbed from the small intestine using a model with constant values for ruminal effective protein degradability (EPD) and intestinal digestibility of rumen undegraded protein. Microbial protein was calculated on the basis of digestible carbohydrates and rumen degradable protein (RDP). Alternative models were used to estimate microbial protein formation, assuming the energy values of RDP and TA to be equivalent to 1.00, 0.75, 0.50, 0.25, and 0 times that of digestible carbohydrates. Because EPD values are seldom determined in production trials, they were derived using empirical models that estimate them from other feed components. The goodness of fit of models was compared on the basis of root mean squared error (RMSE) of milk protein yield (MPY) predicted from MP supply (adjusted for random study effect) and Akaike's information criterion. Metabolizable protein supply calculated from basal assumptions predicted MPY precisely within a study (RMSE = 16.2 g/d). Variable contribution of RDP to the energy supply for microbial synthesis influenced the precision of MPY prediction very little, but RMSE for MPY increased markedly when the energy supply of rumen microbes was corrected for TA concentration. Using predicted rather than constant EPD values also increased RMSE of MPY prediction. These observations do not mean that the supply of MP from undegraded feed protein is constant. However, it suggests that our current methods overestimate the range in EPD values and that the techniques have so many inherent technical problems that they can mask the true differences between the feeds. Including new elements in feed protein evaluation models may not improve the precision of production response predictions unless the consequent effects on the supply of other nutrients are taken into account.

Internet is more and more used as an educational tool. We have developed the EVICAB platform which provides a curriculum in Biomedical Engineering. EVICAB includes the educational material in various formats eg. lecture videos, lecture slides, textbook, exercises and examination. The video material is available in various formats to be viewed on the PC, iPod and media phones. EVICAB offers for the users the possibility to submit additional information and comments. It also includes rating of the educational material. Its use is free and it is available worldwide.

The main advantage of video lectures is being able to break spatial and temporal constrains when disseminating information. We briefly present the system used for recording and diffusing video lectures over the Internet. The process of recording and diffusing video lectures may be divided into 5 main steps: prepare, record, edit, produce, and share. Video for the educational purposes creates new technical boundaries. Thus, boundaries can be surmounted or diminished by considerate technology analysis and design.
