This study examines the joint effect of brand-cause congruence, brand attachment, and attitude toward corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the intention of consumers to adhere to causes sponsored by a brand. The results of two experiments suggest that when consumer attitude toward such causes is less positive and attachment to the brand is low, the intention to adhere to a CSR cause is greater when the brand is congruent to thecause than when it is incongruent; if consumer brand attachment is high, the intention to adhere to the cause is the same, regardless of brand-cause congruence. On the other hand, if consumer attitude toward the cause is more positive, brand attachment does not moderate the effect of brand-cause congruence on the intention to adhere to the cause. The perception of persuasive intent mediates the influence of brand-cause congruence on the intention to adhere for consumers with low brand attachment, but not for those with high brand attachment.

A number of academic studies have investigated the "country-of-origin effect", i.e., the influence of a product’s country of origin on the attitudes of consumers. It is known that countries with a higher level of socioeconomic development generate more favorable attitudes towards their goods, and that this influence is moderated by the degree of consumer involvement with the product category. Most previous studies have investigated mainly tangible products, however, this study examines the country-of-origin effect for services using an unexplored and distinct approach: the presence of a brand in various cities across the world as an advertising appeal, without explicitly mentioning the country of origin. Specifically, we create a scenario in which two new retail brands in product categories with low and high consumer involvement are established in Brazil, and the presence of these products in cities of developed countries (vs emerging) is mentioned. The results show that their presence in developed (vs emerging) cities has a more positive effect on purchasing intent, attitudes as well as the perceived success for the high-involvement category (clothing store), when compared to the low-involvement category (supermarket). This study contributes to the marketing literature by demonstrating that presence in developed cities can have the same effect on consumer attitudes as the communication of the country of origin, and that this effect is moderated by the degree of consumer involvement with a category

This research investigates the country of distribution effect on the change of attitudes towards a brand. Country of distribution is defined as the results (positive or negative) obtained by a brand when it communicates to be distributed in a foreigner locale. The results of three experiments demonstrate that the country of distribution effect is higher when the country is a traditional manufacturer (vs. non-traditional manufacturer) of the brand’s product category. Further, the country of distribution effect is higher for high quality (vs. low quality) brands and is moderated by the perceived success of the brand in the distribution country.

Omission negligence is characterized by the lack of sensibility regarding unmentioned or unknown information. This phenomenon is very recurring, since it is not rare that a consumer has to make a decision supported by a judgment formulated from incomplete information. Prior research indicated that people often cannot identify the absence of important information, which results in strong convictions being formed based on little consistent evidence. The main purpose of this work is to comprehend brand effects on omission negligence. Three experiments were conducted, involving 769 undergraduate students of business administration. Empiricalexperiments support the understanding that individuals with a low contextual cognitive level (non-experts) are insensitive to attribute omission and are also extremely positive when completing evaluations, even when there is no apparent reason for that. Upon comparing the experiments’ findings, it is understood that a recognized brand more incisively influences experts’ evaluation than non-experts’. Even though experts anchor their judgments in a more strict evaluation of available attributes, a recognized brand has a strong influence on the object’s general evaluation.

Industrial management ,HD28-70 - Abstract
Induced by the recent debate regarding the influence that the store environment can have on consumers and by the massive amount of resources that retailers have spent in order to create satisfied consumers, this study proposes a new model in which the relationship between store environment variables (physical environment, organization, assortment, and salesman service) and retail outcomes variables (satisfaction, repurchase intention, and word-of-mouth) is mediated by hedonic and utilitarian shopping values. To test the theoretical model, data were collected from the 399 respondents who purchased appliances at a store located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The results indicated that among the environmental variables of the store, only the assistance of salesman has positively influenced the values of hedonic and utilitarian shopping. Hedonic shopping value influenced positively all the retail outcomes variables while utilitarian shopping value did not influence any of them. The results suggest that in this particular case, hedonic shopping value was much more important than utilitarian shopping value to determine purchase satisfaction, repurchase intention, and intention of word-of-mouth. The results also suggest the greater importance of salesman service in situations that the store environment is not especially attractive or different.

The main objective of this study is to assess the effect of parent brand perceived quality and perceived similarity on the evaluation of corporate service brand extensions. It is also the intention of this study to verify whether providing information cues about the characteristics of the extension contributes to the brand extension evaluation. The hypotheses were tested by means of three experiments involving 1,131 subjects. The results of Study 1, conducted with fictitious brands as stimuli, demonstrated that the perceived quality of the parent brand played a more significant role than perceived similarity on the evaluations of brand extensions. In Study 2, where real brands were used as stimuli, the results were the same as in Study 1. Study 3 found that providing information cues about the characteristics of the extensions had a positive effect for one of the extensions of the high quality parent brand but not for the two proposed extensions of the low quality parent brand. Taken as a whole, the results suggest that the perceived quality of the parent-brand plays a fundamental role in the evaluation of corporate service brand extensions. The study also contributes several hypotheses for future studies and managerial implications for managers of corporate service brands.

This study proposes and validates a trust measurement model for buyer-seller relationships. Baptized as development-based trust, the model encompasses three dimensions of trust: calculus-based, knowledge-based and identification-based. In addition to recognizing that trust is a multidimensional construct, the model also assumes that trust can evolve to take on a different character depending on the stage of the relationship. In order to test the proposed model and compare it to the characteristic-based trust measurement model, the measure most frequently used in the buyer-seller relationship literature, data were collected from 238 clients of an IT product wholesaler. The results show that the scales are valid and reliable and the proposed development-based trust measurement model is superior to the characteristic-based trust measurement model in terms of its ability to explain certain variables of interest in buyer-seller relationships (long-term relationship orientation, information sharing, behavioral loyalty and future intentions). Implications for practice, limitations and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether frontline employee empowerment (FEE) is necessary in the presence of streamlined recovery processes when customers attribute responsibility for the recovery process to the service provider. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses were tested through a survey conducted with 253 bank customers, combined with two laboratory experiments run with 354 undergraduate students to assess service recovery efforts by an online store and a clinical laboratory. Findings Customers who attribute more responsibility for the recovery process to service providers only become more satisfied with FEE when recovery processes are not streamlined. The presence of streamlined processes and FEE is not sufficient to raise post-recovery satisfaction levels in individuals who attribute little responsibility for the process to service providers. Originality/value The study extends the literature on contingencies that influence the design of recovery strategies by showing when FEE matters. It also highlights the risks of designing service recovery practices, such as FEE or streamlined recovery processes, without considering that different customers do not evaluate such efforts in the same fashion. Research on service recovery design needs to fully integrate concepts from marketing, operations and human resources when the goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of such practices. The outcomes also offer managers insights for designing recovery strategies.

18. SUPERANDO O CETICISMO DO CONSUMIDOR RELATIVO À PROPAGANDA COM ANÚNCIOS MISTERIOSOS

- Abstract

Regret is an important emotion in the context of decision making and has many implications for the behavior of consumers. Although regret may be an inevitable outcome, it is possible to cope with it through various regulation strategies. This research investigates one of those strategies, namely, decrease the goal level strategy (DGL), in which one regulates regret by reevaluating the negativity of an outcome. Two properly powered and preregistered experimental studies find that the DGL strategy effectively works in regulating individuals' post-decisional regret. Besides, the DGL effect is moderated by individuals' maximizing tendency. When maximizers engaged in the DGL strategy, by reappraising their decision and recognizing positive alternative goals, they regulated their regrets more successfully. For satisficers, in contrast, who are by default more prone to adopt the protective “good enough” choice, engaging in a DGL strategy did not affect their regrets. These results contribute to the literature on regret by empirically testing DGL as an effective regret regulation strategy, showing mechanisms that can help individuals to effectively cope with regret.

A search is presented for massive narrow resonances decaying either into two Higgs bosons, or into a Higgs boson and a W or Z boson. The decay channels considered are H H → b b ¯ τ+τ− and V H → q q ¯ τ+τ−, where H denotes the Higgs boson, and V denotes the W or Z boson. This analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS Collaboration, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. For the TeV-scale mass resonances considered, substructure techniques provide ways to differentiate among the hadronization products from vector boson decays to quarks, Higgs boson decays to bottom quarks, and quark- or gluon-induced jets. Reconstruction techniques are used that have been specifically optimized to select events in which the tau lepton pair is highly boosted. The observed data are consistent with standard model expectations and upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction for resonance masses between 0.9 and 4.0 TeV. Exclusion limits are set in the context of bulk radion and graviton models:spin-0 radion resonances are excluded below a mass of 2.7 TeV at 95% confidence level. In the spin-1 heavy vector triplet framework, mass-degenerate W′ and Z′ resonances with dominant couplings to the standard model gauge bosons are excluded below a mass of 2.8 TeV at 95% confidence level. These are the first limits for massive resonances at the TeV scale with these decay channels at s=13 TeV.[Figure not available: see fulltext.], 0, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The placebo effect is the observed result in an individual or group of individuals, after a treatment in which a placebo was used. The results, from two experiments, indicate that in a state of placebo effect, with high motivation and high expectations, the responses (subjective and objective) were improved when a recognized brand was evaluated. We also identified that high expectation levels eliminated the impact of motivation in the relationship between brand and subjective and objective responses and, in that context, any brand would positively influence the dependent variables.

When should marketers emphasize attributes or benefits in their communications? Grounded in construal-level theory, the results of four studies suggest that when a purchase is planned for the distant future or when construal levels are high, benefit-based appeals are more persuasive than attribute-based appeals. By contrast, when a purchase is planned for the near future or when consumers are predisposed to low construal levels, attribute-based appeals are equally as persuasive as benefit-based appeals. However, when low construal levels are temporarily induced using a mind-set manipulation, attribute-based appeals are found to be more persuasive than benefit-based appeals. Moreover, we demonstrate how these effects occur only when processing fluency is uninhibited. This research establishes an important link between these appeal types and construal levels, subsequently demonstrating when marketers should use these appeals.

Omission neglect is characterized by a lack of sensitivity to missing or unknown information. Prior research has shown that people often cannot identify an absence of important information, so that strong beliefs are formed based on little consistent empirical evidence. Most previous studies have examined the omission neglect phenomenon using only stimuli (e.g., product attributes) without the brand identification. The main purpose of this study is to understand the effects of brand on omission neglect. Three experiments were conducted involving 742 business administration students. The experiments’ findings show that a recognized brand is more influential for the judgments of individuals with high levels of contextual knowledge (experts), compared with the judgments made by individuals with low levels of contextual knowledge (novices). A similar pattern of results is observed for highly similar brand extension evaluations. Discussion of results and both theoretical and managerial contributions ar...

Empirical experiments support the understanding that individuals with a low contextual cognitive level (non-experts) are insensitive to attribute omission and are also extremely positive when completing evaluations, even when there is no apparent reason for that. Upon comparing the experiments' findings, it is understood that a recognized brand more incisively influences experts' evaluation than non-experts'. Even though experts anchor their judgments in a more strict evaluation of available attributes, a recognized brand has a strong influence on the object's general evaluation.

PurposeThis paper's objective is to propose an integrated framework to investigate the adoption intention of mobile banking technology and to test it in the Brazilian context.Design/methodology/approachA total of 666 respondents from the most economically developed cities in Brazil were surveyed. The sample comprised 333 mobile banking users and 333 mobile banking non‐users. Partial least squares was used to analyze the proposed framework's construct relations.FindingsThe framework offers an integrated view, taking into account more predictors than other studies on the adoption of innovations. For non‐users, the framework was able to explain approximately 69 percent of the dependent variable (intention to adopt mobile banking) variation, which is a figure higher than those obtained in previous studies. However, for current users of mobile banking, only 27 percent of the dependent variable variation was explained by the framework. It was also observed that the predictors' influence over the criterion variable was different for each group of mobile banking users and non‐users.Originality/valueThe findings suggest that the proposed integrated framework offers a deeper understanding of the variables that influence the adoption of mobile banking.

This study compares, in three distinct studies, the hedonic value of purchases made at different retail merchants. In the first study it is compared the hedonic shopping value of purchases made at e-stores and brick-and-mortar merchants; the second compares large and small malls, and the third compares specialty stores and superstores. In general, the conclusion is that hedonic shopping value cannot be attributed to specific merchant classes since the main effects, whenever present, were of little significance. It is suggested that future studies should focus on looking into specific retail merchant characteristics and how they interact with individual characteristics in the creation of hedonic value.

This study contributes to the marketing literature by demonstrating that presence in developed cities can have the same effect on consumer attitudes as the communication of the country of origin, and that this effect is moderated by the degree of consumer involvement with a category, Estudos acadêmicos têm investigado o “efeito país de origem” sobre as atitudes dos consumidores, que criam percepções baseadas na imagem dos países e em sua tradição na manufatura de determinados bens.

Online peer-to-peer problem solving (P3) communities provide a cost-effective and reliable means of delivering education and service support to customers of complex, frequently evolving products. Through a multi-disciplinary conceptual framework, we examine the roles of diversity perceptions and expressive freedom in affecting learning and social identification of online P3 community participants, and in turn, their effects on the participants' relationship with, and future intentions towards the brand. We test our hypotheses via a structural equation model with survey data obtained from 555 active members of the two largest XBOX online P3 communities in Brazil. Our results reveal that greater perceived diversity facilitates learning but hinders social identification, whereas expressive freedom has positive effects on learning, but no effect on social identification. Social identification fully mediates the effects of the antecedents on outcomes. We also discuss the theoretical contributions and the managerial implications of our findings, and suggest opportunities for future research.

Four experiments demonstrated that as the perceived diagnosticity of the presented information increases, sensitivity to missing diagnostic information decreases. However, experts were sensitive to missing information regardless of the diagnosticity of the presented attribute information. When a well-known brand name was paired with the attribute information, novices were insensitive to missing information regardless of the diagnosticity of the presented attribute information. Implications of the results for understanding information utilization and omission neglect are discussed.

Este artigo pretende servir como um guia na condução de experimentos para pesquisadores iniciantes e oferecer novas perspectivas da pesquisa experimental para pesquisadores mais experientes.DOI: 10.5585/remark.v13i2.2692, Considering the growing number of scientific studies published in the marketing field and the development of unique theories of the area (Hunt, 2010), using experimental designs seems increasingly appropriate to investigate marketing phenomena. The main objective of this study is verify the effect that different strategies of brand name attribution (descriptive or invented) exercises on retail brand extensions more or less similar. This research is justified not only by the absence of studies on retail brand extensions but also by the recurrence with which this strategy has been happening in our society. The formulated hypotheses were tested by an experiment, in full factorial design 3 (high, medium and low similarity between original and extended retail format) x 2 (descriptive name and invented name) among subjects involving 170 respondents. The result of this study that the utilization of name that is full of meaning does not seem appropriate to extension in formats with low similarity to the original format and that the extension off meaning-full name is a good option to new deals similar to the retailer’s original format, O objetivo principal deste estudo é verificar qual o efeito que diferentes estratégias de atribuição de um nome de marca (carregado de significado ou inventado) exercem sobre extensões de marcas varejistas mais e menos similares.

The original marketing placebo effect study shows that high price increases consumers' expectations and enhances behavioral performance (Shiv, Carmon, & Ariely, 2005). We find that several non-price variables (set size, scarcity, packaging, and taste) conceptually replicate this effect. Consumers hold naive theories about the possible influence of many marketing variables, and these theories influence subjective beliefs and objective behavior.

There is no doubt about the importance of service quality as a factor of businesses' success, but to measure this quality has proved to be a challenge when one considers different environmental contexts. Given this, the main goal of this paper was to test two measurement scales of perceived service quality. The comparison between Service Quality scale (Servqual) and Retail Service Quality (RSQ) was conducted by means of a survey with 351 participants, clients of a home center stores chain located in the city of São Paulo. The data were analyzed using both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, both scales demonstrated acceptable levels of reliability and validity. However, the RSQ demonstrated a better performance in the nomological test since it was able to explain 43% of the loyalty towards the retailer, while the Servqual scale explained only 11%.

This study investigates the determinants of Internet Banking adoption among Brazilians non-users. To accomplish this objective, the study proposes a model built with constructs gathered from the most known models of new technology adoption found in the marketing literature. The model was tested among a sample of 292 people and the results show that the effects of eight variables were significant in determining the intention to adopt Internet Banking. They are compatibility with lifestyle, subjective norm, self-efficacy, image, relative advantage of security and privacy, relative advantage of control, trialability, and technological support. By the other side, none of the individual characteristics included in the model were significant. The major contribution of the study is the proposal of a comprehensive, simple, and easily implementable model. The study concludes by pointing some managerial implications, limitations, and suggestions for future studies.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of an adapted version of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to the Automated Teller Machines (ATM) adoption. TAM, originally developed by Davis (1989) and later adapted by Gefen (2003) was based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) and has been broadly used to identify the antecedents to behavioral intention. Specifically, in this study it was used to analyze the relationship between habit and the two main constructs of TAM, perceived utility and perceived ease of use. Automated teller machines were chosen as object of the study because it has already been adopted by a large part of the population, making easier to evaluate the habit construct, incorporated by Gefen (2003) to the Technology Acceptance Model.

The purpose of this study is to increase the comprehension of the music consumer behavior applying the Means-End Chain Model, applying the Association Pattern Technique (APT). A popular music style, the new metal, most commonly related to young people, was chosen as object of the study. In the first phase of the study, 9 in-depth interviews were conducted and in the second one, 240 respondents were surveyed. The Means-End Chain Model identifies the associative relationships between consumer values and the perceived benefits and attributes of the music. The most important music attributes in terms of the probability of providing benefits were, in order of importance, the sound "aggressiveness", the lyrics "criticism", the "sound intensity" (bass), and the "rebelliousness" transmitted by the music. It was also found that the most important consumer values related to the music benefits were the "excitement/relaxation" and the "exhilaration/euphoria" aroused by the music. Based on a Latent Class Model the study also proposes a typology based on the hierarchy of personal values, described according probabilistic maps that point the relationship between variables for each group.

With the number and variety of shopping centers in Brazil increasing, there is greater pressure on the practitioners of marketing to better understand how consumers choose shopping centers both as shopping and leisure areas. This study suggests that the technique of the repertory grid (RGT) is superior to other techniques which are generally used to evaluate the dimensions which a consumer uses to evaluate a shopping center. The main advantage of the repertory grid is that the dimensions through which an object is evaluated and its relative importance are directly obtained from the consumer with no interference from the researcher. The study introduces a number of necessary basic concepts to understand the application of the technique and the theory on which it is based, the psychology of personal constructs developed by Kelly (1955). The study also presents a number of hypothetical examples of how to apply the technique and its main limitations.

When implementing changes and innovations, organizations often have to deal with resistance to change. Maybe because few subjects pertaining to organizational transformation are so broadly and consistently covered in the popular literature, we may have been induced to believe we must know all about it. If we know so much, why resistance is still a major barrier to organizational transformation, and why so many change agents still strive to overcome it? In this article, we attempt to respond this question by questioning the predominant models of resistance and the assumptions of the several "recipe-oriented" approaches to deal with resistance in organizations. Our understanding is that such "recipes" are not particularly helpful because they use a model of resistance to change that was built upon several questionable assumptions, according to which resistance is a) a "natural", inevitable fact; b) malignant to the organization; c) employee-driven; and d) collective. Based on counter-assumptions to each of these widespread premises and on Psychology of Perception, a new Model of Individual Resistance to Change is proposed. The model represents the individual's perceptual process during organizational change, from exposure to stimuli until behavior adoption. The seven-stage model culminates in four possible outcomes: resistance, resistance overcoming, indecision, or change adoption. Implications for theory and practice, limitations of the model and suggestions for future development are presented.

This article focuses conscious consumption by analysis of psychographic variables of consumer behavior: altruism, liberalism, environmental concern and ECCB, besides tracing this profile through social-demographic variables: sex, age, income and education, offering, this way, important bases for green marketing actions. The study was operated as an experiment and the information was collected by an electronic questionnaire posted on the website of Qualtrics.com and data analysis was performed using the statistical software, using various techniques. The results show that the psychographic variables are more relevant than the social-demographic variables to explain the conscious consumer behavior. So, the contributions of this study reside in the suggestion of emphasis in advertising that have support in arguments based on psychographic variables, especially the more emphasized, such as altruism.

Scales and analytical methods Abstract This study compares the use of three types of scaling methods (semantic differential, rank-order, and constant sum) and three types of data analysis methods (simple attribution of satisfaction, gap analysis, importance- satisfaction model, and multiplicative approach) for the measurement of services and products attributes satisfaction. The objective of the study is to discuss the use of different scales and data analysis tools by comparing the results provided by each of them. To test the hypotheses, data was gathered using an electronic, structured questionnaire and the snowball sampling method. The findings reveal that both scales and data analysis methods provided significantly different results. The conclusion is that scales and data analysis methods can influence the conclusions to be drawn from the same data set. Key-words: Consumer satisfaction. Client service. Marketing research.
