2. Some notes to extend the study on random non-autonomous second order linear differential equations appearing in Mathematical Modeling

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to complete certain issues from our recent contribution [J. Calatayud, J.-C. Cort\'es, M. Jornet, L. Villafuerte, Random non-autonomous second order linear differential equations: mean square analytic solutions and their statistical properties, Advances in Difference Equations, 2018:392, 1--29 (2018)]. We restate the main theorem therein that deals with the homogeneous case, so that the hypotheses are clearer and also easier to check in applications. Another novelty is that we tackle the non-homogeneous equation with a theorem of existence of mean square analytic solution and a numerical example. We also prove the uniqueness of mean square solution via an habitual Lipschitz condition that extends the classical Picard Theorem to mean square calculus. In this manner, the study on general random non-autonomous second order linear differential equations with analytic data processes is completely resolved. Finally, we relate our exposition based on random power series with polynomial chaos expansions and the random differential transform method, being the latter a reformulation of our random Fr\"obenius method., Comment: 15 pages, 0 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

In this paper, we deal with uncertainty quantification for the random Legendre differential equation, with input coefficient $A$ and initial conditions $X_0$ and $X_1$. In a previous study [Calbo G. et al, Comput. Math. Appl., 61(9), 2782--2792 (2011)], a mean square convergent power series solution on $(-1/e,1/e)$ was constructed, under the assumptions of mean fourth integrability of $X_0$ and $X_1$, independence, and at most exponential growth of the absolute moments of $A$. In this paper, we relax these conditions to construct an $\mathrm{L}^p$ solution ($1\leq p\leq\infty$) to the random Legendre differential equation on the whole domain $(-1,1)$, as in its deterministic counterpart. Our hypotheses assume no independence and less integrability of $X_0$ and $X_1$. Moreover, the growth condition on the moments of $A$ is characterized by the boundedness of $A$, which simplifies the proofs significantly. We also provide approximations of the expectation and variance of the response process. The numerical experiments show the wide applicability of our findings. Abstract

This paper deals with the randomized heat equation defined on a general bounded interval $[L_1,L_2]$ and with non-homogeneous boundary conditions. The solution is a stochastic process that can be related, via changes of variable, with the solution stochastic process of the random heat equation defined on $[0,1]$ with homogeneous boundary conditions. Results in the extant literature establish conditions under which the probability density function of the solution process to the random heat equation on $[0,1]$ with homogeneous boundary conditions can be approximated. Via the changes of variable and the Random Variable Transformation technique, we set mild conditions under which the probability density function of the solution process to the random heat equation on a general bounded interval $[L_1,L_2]$ and with non-homogeneous boundary conditions can be approximated uniformly or pointwise. Furthermore, we provide sufficient conditions in order that the expectation and the variance of the solution stochastic process can be computed from the proposed approximations of the probability density function. Abstract

In this paper we study the randomized non-autonomous complete linear differential equation. The diffusion coefficient and the source term in the differential equation are assumed to be stochastic processes and the initial condition is treated as a random variable on an underlying complete probability space. The solution to this random differential equation is a stochastic process. Any stochastic process is determined by its finite-dimensional joint distributions. In this paper, the main goal is to obtain the probability density function of the solution process (the first finite-dimensional distribution) under mild conditions. The solution process is expressed by means of Lebesgue integrals of the data stochastic processes, which, in general, cannot be computed in an exact manner, therefore approximations for its probability density function are constructed. The key tools applied to construct the approximations are the Random Variable Transformation technique and Karhunen-Loeve expansions. Our results can be applied to a large variety of examples. Abstract

In this paper we study the randomized heat equation with homogeneous boundary conditions. The diffusion coeffcient is assumed to be a random variable and the initial condition is treated as a stochastic process. The solution of this randomized partial differential equation problem is a stochastic process, which is given by a random series obtained via the classical method of separation of variables. Any stochastic process is determined by its finite-dimensional joint distributions. In this paper, the goal is to obtain approximations to the probability density function of the solution (the first finite-dimensional distributions) under mild conditions. Since the solution is expressed as a random series, we perform approximations of its probability density function. We use two approaches: broadly speaking, first, dealing with the random Fourier coefficients of the random series, and second, taking advantage of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion of the initial condition stochastic process. 18. Frailty Assessment in a Stable COPD Cohort: Is There a COPD-Frail Phenotype?

Abstract

The frailty syndrome increases the morbidity/mortality in older adults, and several studies have shown a higher prevalence of this syndrome in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics of frail patients with COPD to define a new phenotype called "COPD-frail." We conducted a cross-sectional study in a cohort of patients with stable COPD, classified as either frail, pre-frail, or non-frail. Sociodemographic, clinical, and biochemical variables were compared between the three groups of patients. The study included 127 patients, of which 31 were frail, 64 were pre-frail, and 32 non-frail. All subjects had FEV1/FVC below the lower limit of normal (range Z-score: -1.66 and -5.32). Patients in the frail group showed significantly higher scores in the mMRC (modified Medical Research Council) scale, the CAT (COPD Assessment Test), and the BODE (Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise capacity) index. They also showed differences in symptoms according to GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease), as well as more COPD exacerbations, less physical activity, more anxiety and depression symptoms based on HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and lower hemoglobin, hematocrit, and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol levels. Variables with independent association with frailty included the mMRC score, the HAD index for depression and age. In summary, differential characteristics of frail patients with COPD encourage the definition of a "COPD-frail" phenotype that-if identified early-would allow performing interventions to prevent a negative impact on the morbidity/mortality of these patients.

[EN] In this article we analyze the randomized non-autonomous Bertalanffy model x' (t, omega) = a(t, omega)x(t, omega) b(t, omega)x(t, omega)(2/3), x(t(0), omega) = x(0)(omega), where a(t, omega) and b(t, omega) are stochastic processes and x(0)(omega) is a random variable, all of them defined in an underlying complete probability space. Under certain assumptions on a, b and x(0), we obtain a solution stochastic process, x(t, omega), both in the sample path and in the mean square senses. By using the random variable transformation technique and Karhunen-Loeve expansions, we construct a sequence of probability density functions that under certain conditions converge pointwise or uniformly to the density function of x(t, omega), f (t) (x). This permits approximating the expectation and the variance of x(t, omega). Abstract

[EN] In this paper we extend the study on the linear advection equation with independent stochastic velocity and initial condition performed in Dorini and Cunha (2011). By using both existing and novel results on the stochastic chain rule, we solve the random linear advection equation in the mean square sense. We provide a new expression for the probability density function of the solution stochastic process, which can be computed as accurately as wanted via Monte Carlo simulations, and which does not require the specific probability distribution of the integral of the velocity. This allows us to solve the non-Gaussian velocity case, which was not treated in the aforementioned contribution. Several numerical results illustrate the computations of the probability density function by using our approach. On the other hand, we derive a theoretical partial differential equation for the probability density function of the solution stochastic process. Finally, a shorter and easier derivation of the joint probability density function of the response process at two spatial points is obtained by applying conditional expectations appropriately. Abstract

[EN] We study the random heat partial differential equation on a bounded domain assuming that the diffusion coefficient and the boundary conditions are random variables, and the initial condition is a stochastic process. Under general conditions, this stochastic system possesses a unique solution stochastic process in the almost sure and mean square senses. To quantify the uncertainty for this solution process, the computation of the probability density function is a major goal. By using a random finite difference scheme, we approximate the stochastic solution at each point by a sequence of random variables, whose probability density functions are computable, i.e., we construct a sequence of approximating density functions. We include numerical experiments to illustrate the applicability of our method.

Abstract

[EN] In this paper, we deal with the logistic growth model with a time-dependent carrying capacity that was proposed in the literature for the study of the total bacterial biomass during occlusion of healthy human skin. Accounting for data and model errors, randomness is incorporated into the equation by assuming that the input parameters are random variables. The uncertainty is quantified by approximations of the solution stochastic process via truncated series solution together with the random variable transformation method. Numerical examples illustrate the theoretical results.

The theoretical analysis of this computational method has not been performed in the extant literature. In this paper, we deal with a particular random differential equation: a random diffusion-reaction Poisson-type problem of the form , , with boundary conditions , . Here, alpha, A and B are random variables and is a stochastic process. The term is a stochastic process that solves the random problem in the sample path sense. Via a finite difference scheme, we approximate with a sequence of stochastic processes in both the almost sure and senses. This allows us to find mild conditions under which the probability density function of can be approximated. Illustrative examples are included.

Abstract

Commercial refrigerating systems are mostly based on hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) fluids. The Kyoto Protocol requirements encouraged the promotion of policies for sustainable development and reduction of global warming potential, including the regulation of HCFCs. In that sense, R-744 is the only natural refrigerant replacement known to be nontoxic, nonflammable, and not harmful to the environment. The aim of this work is to aid in the development of new reciprocating compressors for light commercial applications that use CO2 as the fluid refrigerant. First, a numerical analysis and experimental validation were developed and carried out, not only for laboratory compressor prototypes, but also for the whole transcritical CO2 cycle. The numerical comparative results present a reasonably good agreement and successfully allow the use of these numerical tools to improve the successive designs. Consequently, several compressor pre-industrial prototypes have been designed, validated, and improved. The experimental results against standard compressors show the possibilities that CO2 compressors offer in terms of efficiency and COP. Finally, an appliance test is presented to check the performance of the overall system and confirm the preliminary results obtained in the calorimeter tests. The appliance platform results prove the feasibility of these light commercial applications using R-744 as the fluid refrigerant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introducción: La xerostomía condiciona la calidad de vida del paciente, presentando dolor, dificultades al masticar, tragar o incluso al hablar. El objetivo fue valorar la eficacia clínica y la tolerabilidad de dos productos naturales, el aceite de oliva y el licopeno, en los pacientes afectados por xerostomía. Método: Estudio doble ciego, randomizado controlado frente a placebo. Formado por 60 pacientes, divididos en dos grupos: tratamiento y placebo. La duración del estudio fue de 3 meses. El tratamiento consistió en un aerosol bucal de 250ml, de contenido aceite de oliva virgen con licopeno. Variables estudiadas: test de saliva global, test de drenaje, escala visual analógica de sequedad oral (EVA), perfil de impacto de salud oral (OHIP-14sp) y encuesta de satisfacción. Resultados: Los resultados del test TSG mostraron un aumento en el grupo tratamiento (p=0,041), mientras que permaneció invariable en el grupo placebo (p=0,125). Con respecto al test de Drenaje se obtuvo un aumento en la tasa del flujo salival, tanto en el grupo tratamiento (p=0,001) como en el placebo (p=0,003). Se observó una mejoría en el test EVA en el grupo tratamiento, con respecto a la dificultad para hablar (p=0,028), aumento de la cantidad de saliva que nota el paciente (p=0,033) y una mejora en la sequedad de los labios (p=0,04). El grupo placebo presentó mejoría con respecto a la cantidad de saliva que nota el paciente (p=0,017) y en la sequedad oral (p=< 0,010). Se identificaron mejoras en la calidad de vida oral OHIP-14 en el grupo tratamiento (p=0,001) y no encontrando diferencias significativas en el grupo placebo (p=0,102). Conclusiones: La aplicación del aceite de oliva virgen extra y licopeno en pacientes con xerostomía ha sido beneficiosa., New treatment strategies in patients with xerostomia: Clinical study to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of antioxidants Introduction: Xerostomia conditions the quality of life of patients presenting pain, difficulty chewing, swallowing or speaking. The objective was to evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of two natural products, olive oil and lycopene, in patients with xerostomia. Method: Double-blind, randomized and placebo controlled study. Consisting of 60 patients divided into two groups: treatment and placebo. The study duration was 3 months. Treatment consisted of a 250 ml mouth spray of virgin olive oil contained lycopene. Variables studied: global test saliva, drainage test, visual analogical scale of oral dryness (VAS) Impact Profile oral health (OHIP-14sp) and satisfaction survey. Results: The test results showed an increase GST in the treatment group (p = 0.041), whereas it remained unchanged in the placebo group (p = 0.125). Regarding the drainage test, it was obtained an increase in salivary flow rate in both treatment groups (p = 0,001) and placebo (p = 0.003). Improvement was observed in the VAS test in the treatment group regarding the speaking difficulty (p = 0.028), the amount of saliva increase that the patient feels (p = 0.033) and an improvement in the dryness of the mouth (p = 0.04). Abstract

Objetivo: el objetivo de nuestro estudio fue comprobar el efecto de la colocación de implantes dentales y su posterior rehabilitación prostodóntica en los distintos aspectos de la salud del paciente odontológico, incluyendo el impacto en la calidad de vida, citotoxicidad y corrosión de los metales que conforman el implante y la prótesis dental y su relación con el tiempo que llevan los mismos en boca. También comprobamos y valoramos su impacto en los tejidos blandos adyacentes y la salud oral. Material y método: se realizó un estudio prospectivo sobre 42 pacientes que en total sumaban 153 implantes. A los pacientes se les sometió a una exploración clínica y radiológica, así como un frotis para obtener células de la mucosa oral el cual usamos para evaluar la presencia de micronucleos en el epitelio gingival y determinar analíticamente mediante el IPCM los iones metálicos. El mismo operador llevó a cabo todas las tareas. Resultados: no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los pacientes que llevaban los implantes menos de cuatro años y los que los llevaban más en ninguno de los campos, salvo en el marcador de la tensión/ansiedad en el apartado de calidad de vida. Conclusiones: el tiempo transcurrido desde que se llevan los implantes en boca, no influye en el daño genético ni en el IPC masas de los sujetos de nuestro estudio., Aim: the aim of this study was to check the effect of the placement of dental implants and it subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation in the different aspects of the heath of the dental patient, including the impact on life quality, cytotoxicity and metals corrosion that form the implant and the metal prothesis and it relationship with the time it takes for them in mouth . Also will check and value its impact on the adjacent soft tissues and oral health. Material and methods: A prospective study of 42 patients were performed, the total amount of implants were 153. Patients were subjected to a clinical and radiographic examination and a swab to obtain cells from the oral mucosa which we use to assess the presence of micronuclei in the gingival epithelium and analytically determined by metal ions IPCM. The same operator performed all tasks. Results: no significant differences between patients who had implants less than four years and those who had more in any of the fields except the marker of stress / anxiety in the section on quality of life were found. Abstract

Introducción El liquen plano oral (LPO) es probablemente la enfermedad no infecciosa más frecuente de la mucosa oral .La prevalencia del liquen plano en la población general se estima entre un 0’2 y un 1’9%. En la actualidad, se considera que la LPO es un proceso inmunológico multifactorial con factores genéticos, psicológicos, infecciosos, etc., que podrían actuar como agentes causales o como precipitantes del proceso. Las manifestaciones clínicas se presentan como patrones (erosivos) ulcerosos, atróficos, reticulares, papulares y en placas. La posible malignización del liquen plano oral (LPO) sigue en la actualidad como un tema de controversia, este riesgo de malignización del liquen plano oral sugiere la realización de nuevas investigaciones a fin de determinar los factores involucrados en este proceso. Objetivos. Los objetivos fueron realizar un estudio clínico de las lesiones de liquen plano oral su asociación con enfermedades autoinmunes e investigar condiciones de estrés Oxidativo en saliva Material y Métodos Se seleccionaron 130 pacientes con liquen plano oral que cumplen los criterios de inclusión .En los 130 pacientes de LPO diagnosticados clínica e histopatologicamente se encontró que el tipo clínico de presentación más frecuente fue el reticular. Resultados Existe una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la forma de presentación y la sintomatología referida por el paciente . La lesión reticular es la forma más frecuente de LPO que aparece como una red de estrías blancas superpuestas, seguidas de patrones (erosivos) ulcerosos, atróficos y placas. Encontramos la presencia de mayor numero de enfermedades autoinmunes 0.07% (10 /130) en pacientes con OLP que en que el grupo control 0,04% (6 /130) Encontramos, la correlación negativa significativa entre la saliva capacidad antioxidante total y los niveles de MDA en LPO. Conclusión Encontramos la presencia de mayor numero de enfermedades autoinmunes en pacientes con OLP que en que el grupo control.Encontramos, la correlación negativa significativa entre la saliva capacidad antioxidante total y los niveles de MDA en LPO., Oral Lichen planus (OLP) is probably the most common non-infectious disease of the oral mucosa. Lichen planus prevalence in the general population is estimated between 0.2 and 1.9%. At present, it is considered that the LPO is a multifactorial immune process with genetic, psychological, infections factors which could act as causal agents or as precipitating the process. The clinical manifestations are presented as patterns: Ulcer (erosive), atrophic, reticular, papular and in plaques. The reticular lesion is the most common form of LPO which appears as a network of overlapping white streaks, followed by the ulcer (erosive) patterns, then atrophic and finally, plaques. The LPO appears frequently on both sides of the buccal mucosa, but it can also appear in the tongue, gums, or multiple sites. The malignant potential of OLP continues today as a controversial issue and the risk of malignant transformation of oral lichen planus suggests further research to determine the factors involved in this process. Objectives The objectives of this study were to conduct a clinical study of the lesions of OLP, their association with autoimmune diseases and investigate oxidative stress conditions. Material and Methods A study was conducted in 130 patients with oral lichen planus who met the inclusion criteria who were diagnosed clinically and histopathologically. We found that the most frequent clinical type was the reticular ones. Result There is a statistically significant association between the type of presentation and the symptoms reported by the patient. We found the presence of greater number of autoimmune diseases 0.07 % (10/130) in patients with OLP than in the control group 0.04 % (6/130). Abstract

El Síndrome de boca ardiente (SBA) se caracteriza por una sensación de ardor, escozor o picor generalizados en la cavidad bucal. Su etiología es desconocida a pesar de que hay indicios de la participación de numerosos factores locales, sistémicos y psicológicos. Objetivo: Comprobar la eficacia clínica del aceite de oliva mas licopeno sobre el ardor y escozor en pacientes con SBA durante 3 meses. Materiales y Métodos: La población de nuestro estudio incluye pacientes diagnosticados de Síndrome de Boca Ardiente en la clínica Odontológica de la Universidad de Murcia. Se trata de un estudio a doble ciego randomizado frente a placebo. Se estudiaron 60 pacientes que cumplían los criterios de inclusión, 30 de los cuales son tratados con aceite de oliva mas licopeno y los 30 restantes con placebo. Se analizaron las variables de sintomatología, calidad de vida oral mediante el OHIP-14 y general SF36, HDA y estrés oxidativo en saliva. Resultados: Respecto al EVA global de ardor disminuye la sintomatología en ambos grupos al aplicar el producto. En relación a la evolución de la calidad de vida, mediante el test OHIP-14, tanto en el grupo tratamiento como en el grupo placebo mejora de forma estadísticamente significativa (p>0,05). Abstract

Se realizó un análisis del efecto profiláctico del tratamiento antibiótico en ratas Sprague-Dawley tratadas con dexametasona más pamidronato y sometidas a cirugía oral. Se incluyeron un total de 120 animales en un estudio prospectivo randomizado integrado por dos grupos con 60 animales cada uno, en tratamiento diario con dexametasona y pamidronato durante 7, 14 y 21 días. Todas fueron sometidas a extracción del molar derecho mandibular o maxilar. Además a un grupo se le añadió penicilina durante 7 días. Las ratas de ambos grupos se sacrificaron a los 14 y 28 días después de la extracción. En el grupo I, se documentó la osteonecrosis en 18 casos (34,6%). En el grupo II, se documentó osteonecrosis en 5 casos (9,61%) con diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los dos grupos (p = 0,002). La adopción de una profilaxis antibiótica en los procedimientos dentales invasivos conduce a una reducción significativa de las osteonecrosis de los maxilares asociadas al uso de bisfosfonatos, An analysis is made of the prophylactic effect of antibiotic treatment in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with pamidronate plus dexamethasone and subjected to oral surgery. A total of 120 animals were included in a randomized prospective study composed of two groups with 60 animals each, in treatment with Dexamethasone and Pamidronate daily for 7, 14 and 21 days. All were subjected to right mandibular or maxillary molar extraction. Also a group with the addition of penicillin for 7 days. The rats in both groups were sacrificed 14 and 28 days after extraction. In group I, osteonecrosis was documented in 18 cases (34.6%)). Abstract

Background: Spastic paraplegia 11 (SPG11) is the most prevalent form of autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia, resulting from biallelic pathogenic variants in the SPG11 gene (MIM *610844)., Methods: The proband is a 36-year-old female referred for genetic evaluation due to cognitive dysfunction, gait impairment, and corpus callosum atrophy (brain MRI was normal at 25-years-old). Diagnostic approaches included CGH array, next-generation sequencing, and whole transcriptome sequencing., Results: CGH array revealed a 180 kb deletion located upstream of SPG11. Sequencing of SPG11 uncovered two rare single nucleotide variants: the novel variant c.3143C>T in exon 17 (in cis with the deletion), and the previously reported pathogenic variant c.6409C>T in exon 34 (in trans). Whole transcriptome sequencing revealed that the variant c.3143C>T caused exon 17 skipping., Conclusion: We report a novel sequence variant in the SPG11 gene resulting in exon 17 skipping, which, along with a nonsense variant, causes Spastic Paraplegia 11 in our proband. In addition, a deletion upstream of SPG11 was identified in the patient, whose implication in the phenotype remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the deletion apparently affects cis-regulatory elements of the gene, suggesting a potential new pathogenic mechanism underlying the disease in a subset of undiagnosed patients. 49. Spatio-temporal stochastic differential equations for crime incidence modeling.

Abstract

We propose a methodology for the quantitative fitting and forecasting of real spatio-temporal crime data, based on stochastic differential equations. The analysis is focused on the city of Valencia, Spain, for which 90247 robberies and thefts with their latitude-longitude positions are available for a span of eleven years (2010-2020) from records of the 112-emergency phone. The incidents are placed in the 26 zip codes of the city (46001-46026), and monthly time series of crime are built for each of the zip codes. Their annual-trend components are modeled by Itô diffusion, with jointly correlated noises to account for district-level relations. 50. Modeling noisy time-series data of crime with stochastic differential equations.

Abstract

We develop and calibrate stochastic continuous models that capture crime dynamics in the city of Valencia, Spain. From the emergency phone, data corresponding to three crime events, aggressions, stealing and women alarms, are available from the year 2010 until 2020. As the resulting time series, with monthly counts, are highly noisy, we decompose them into trend and seasonality parts. The former is modeled by geometric Brownian motions, both uncorrelated and correlated, and the latter is accommodated by randomly perturbed sine-cosine waves.
