Abstract

Isomeric states of the neutron-rich isotope 18973Ta116 were populated via fragmentation of a primary beam of 208Pb ions at 1 GeV/u impinging on a 9Be target at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The isotopes of interest were separated, identified and delivered to the DESPEC setup. Two isomers were deduced in 189Ta116 and their lifetimes were measured based on the γ-ray time distributions.

Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states of 124Ba were measured by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) technique. The γ-ray coincidence data were analysed by the Differential Decay Curve method (DDCM). The trend of the experimentally deduced normalized B(E2) values reveals a drop at the 8+1 state, which may be caused by structural changes in the backbending region.

Abstract

Low-lying yrast states in 204Po and 206Po have been investigated by the γ-γ fast timing technique with LaBr3(Ce) detectors. Excited states of these nuclei were populated in the 197Au(11B,4n) and the 198Pt(12C,4n) fusion-evaporation reactions, respectively, at the FN-Tandem Facility at the University of Cologne. The lifetimes of the 4+1 states in both nuclei were measured, along with an upper limit for the 2+1 state in 204Po. The preliminary results are discussed in the scope of the systematic behavior of the transition strengths between yrast states in polonium isotopes.

Abstract

Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+3 → 2+1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+1;ms states.

Abstract

This review is focused on various properties of quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the Interacting Boson Model (IBM) of nuclear structure. The model in its infinite-size limit exhibits shape-phase transitions between spherical, deformed prolate, and deformed oblate forms of the ground state. Finite-size precursors of such behavior are verified by robust variations of nuclear properties (nuclear masses, excitation energies, transition probabilities for low lying levels) across the chart of nuclides. Simultaneously, the model serves as a theoretical laboratory for studying diverse general features of QPTs in interacting many-body systems, which differ in many respects from lattice models of solid-state physics. We outline the most important fields of the present interest: (a) The coexistence of first- and second-order phase transitions supports studies related to the microscopic origin of the QPT phenomena. (b) The competing quantum phases are characterized by specific dynamical symmetries and novel symmetry related approaches are developed to describe also the transitional dynamical domains. (c) In some parameter regions, the QPT-like behavior can be ascribed also to individual excited states, which is linked to the thermodynamic and classical descriptions of the system. (d) The model and its phase structure can be extended in many directions: by separating proton and neutron excitations, considering odd-fermion degrees of freedom or different particle-hole configurations, by including other types of bosons, higher order interactions, and by imposing external rotation. All these aspects of IBM phase transitions are relevant in the interpretation of experimental data and important for a fundamental understanding of the QPT phenomenon., Comment: a review article, 71 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

This article continues our previous study of level dynamics in the [O(6)-U(5)]$\supset$O(5) transition of the interacting boson model [nucl-th/0504016] using the semiclassical theory of spectral fluctuations. We find classical monodromy, related to a singular bundle of orbits with infinite period at energy E=0, and bifurcations of numerous periodic orbits for E>0. The spectrum of allowed ratios of periods associated with beta- and gamma-vibrations exhibits an abrupt change around zero energy. These findings explain anomalous bunching of quantum states in the E$\approx$0 region, which is responsible for the redistribution of levels between O(6) and U(5) multiplets., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures; continuation of nucl-th/0504016

We investigate the evolution of quantal spectra and the corresponding wave functions along the [O(6)-U(5)]$\supset$O(5) transition of the interacting boson model. The model is integrable in this regime and its ground state passes through a second-order structural phase transition. Abstract

The degree of chaos in the Interacting Boson Model (IBM-1) is compared with what we call the "dynamical-symmetry content" of the system. The latter is represented by the information entropy of the eigenfunctions with respect to bases associated with dynamical symmetries of the IBM-1, and expresses thus the localization of actual eigenfunctions in these symmetry bases. The wave-function entropy is shown to be a sensitive tool for monitoring the processes of a single dynamical-symmetry breaking or transitions between two and more symmetries. For the IBM-1 hamiltonians studied here, the known features related to chaos, namely the dependence of chaotic measures on the hamiltonian parameters (position in the Casten triangle) and on the angular momentum, turn out to be correlated with the behaviour of the wave-function entropy. Abstract

The ��-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus ������Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of �������U and �������Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between ��-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 ��s isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr���(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus ������Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

Abstract

Emission of prompt gamma rays following (n,n'), (n,p) and (n,α) reactions induced by irradiation of a calcium carbonate (CaCO3) sample with a beam of fission neutrons was investigated with a modified version of the FaNGaS (Fast Neutron-induced Gamma-ray Spectrometry) instrument operated at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching. The neutron spectrum has an average energy of 2.30 MeV and at sample position the fast neutron flux was (1.13 ± 0.04) × 108 cm−2 s−1. The measurement was performed at an angle of 90° between neutron beam and detector. In total, we claim the identification of 38 prompt gamma lines, from which we have assigned 12 to the (n,n') reaction in calcium (7 for 40Ca, 1 for 42Ca and 4 for 44Ca), 1 to the 12C(n,n')12C reaction, and 2 to the (n,n') reaction in oxygen (1 for 16O and 1 for 18O). The other observed gamma lines are attributed to the 40Ca(n,p)40K reaction (20 lines) and to the 40Ca(n,α)37Ar reaction (3 lines). Relative intensities and fast neutron spectrum averaged partial cross sections of the gamma lines are presented and compared with available literature data. Our results were found to be in good agreement with available literature data but also improved and complemented it, as we have pointed out possible errors and identified new lines. Additionally, for a counting time of 12 h the detection limits of calcium, carbon and oxygen were determined as 5, 13 and 64 mg, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new method of extracting the g-ray intensities necessary to perform lifetime measurements using the differential decay curve method (DDCM) is presented in this work, the unresolved Doppler-shifted components method (UDCM). The UDCM allows for a DDCM analysis to be performed using a g-ray transition for which the fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components are unresolvable in energy and so are detected as a single peak. This technique was used to measure the known lifetime of the yrast 2+1 state in 50Mn with a depopulating transition that does not have resolvable fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components. The lifetime measured through applying the UDCM was consistent with the standard DDCM measurement of the 2+1 state. Use of the UDCM allows for DDCM lifetime measurements to be made using transitions of smaller g-ray energies, smaller recoil velocities and, in some cases, with a smaller uncertainty. In contrast to a standard DDCM analysis, a UDCM analysis is also independent of the widths of the fully Doppler-shifted and degraded components and as a result they do not need to be determined.

Abstract

Lifetimes of the T = 1 isobaric analog Ip = 2+ states in 50Mn and 50Cr were measured simultaneously by employing the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) technique. The states were populated in a fusion-evaporation reaction with a ¹²C beam on a 40Ca target. An analysis of the data and the calculations from the present work, together with the available B(E2 : 2+ RT 0+) data of the isobaric analog states in 50Fe and 50Cr, were used to study isospin symmetry in the three A = 50 isobaric nuclei. Shell-model calculations reproduce the magnitudes as well as the increasing trend of the B(E2) data with increasing Z. To draw a firm conclusion on the level of isospin mixing in the triplet, a new precision measurement of the 2+ RT 0+ transition rate in 50Fe will be required.

Abstract

Lifetime measurements with the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique have been performed to determine yrast E2 transition strengths in 178Pt. The experimental data are related to those on neighboring Pt isotopes, especially recent data on 180Pt, and compared to calculations within the interacting boson model and a Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov approach. These models predict prolate deformed ground states in Pt isotopes close to neutron midshell consistent with the experimental findings. Further, evidence was found that the prolate intruder structure observed in neutron-deficient Hg isotopes that is minimum in energy in 182Hg becomes the ground state configuration in 178Pt and neighboring 180Pt with nearly identical transition quadrupole moments. The new data on 178Pt are further discussed in the context of the systematics along the Pt isotopic chain with respect to a possible sharp shape transition towards a weakly deformed or a quasi-vibrational ground state whereas the prolate structure increases in energy in 174,176Pt and becomes an intruder configuration similar to, for example, 180,182Hg. Abstract

The lifetimes of the 21+ , the 22+ and the 31- states of ²¹0Po have been measured in the ²08Pb(¹²C,¹0Be)²¹0Po transfer reaction by the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The result for the lifetime of the 21+ state is about three times shorter than the adopted value. However, the new value still does not allow for a consistent description of the properties of the yrast 21+ , 41+ , 61+ , and 81+ states of ²¹0Po in the framework of nuclear shell models. Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations also cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

The lifetime of the 21+ state of ²¹²Po was measured in the ²08Pb(¹²C,8Be)²¹²Po transfer reaction by g-ray spectroscopy employing the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) method. The derived absolute B(E2) value of 2.6(3) W.u. indicates a low collectivity and contradicts previous claims of a-cluster components in the structure of the 21+ state. It is demonstrated that a consistent description of the properties of the 21+− 41+− 61+− 81+ sequence in ²¹²Po cannot be achieved in the framework of a single- j shell-model calculation, either. This puzzle is traced to the properties of the seniority-2 configurations in ²¹0Pb and ²¹0Po.
