This article addresses the underrepresentation of Indigenous perspectives in animal sciences by challenging the exclusive use of Western scientific paradigms in research and education. Because of the systematic exclusion of Indigenous peoples, Indigenous perspectives have rarely been represented through empirical study, leading us to believe this is a key reason for the underrepresentation of Native people in these fields. We conducted a literature review, searching for Indigenous contributions in animal sciences and finding a handful of articles in three areas: human-animal bonds, genetic testing and breeding programs, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge. Given the interconnected paradigm of Indigenous worldviews, we suggest that the ongoing siloes of scientific disciplines and the hierarchy of methodology contribute to the dearth of Indigenous perspectives. We suggest increased support for proper tribal consultation, contextualization of the history of research in Native communities, and the creation of scholarly spaces to support these conversations.

We report the synthesis and crystal structure of the first quinolino[7,8- h ]quinoline beryllium(II) complex of the general formula [BeL2(MeCN)Br]Br·MeCN, containing the ligand 4,9-dihydroxyquinolino[7,8- h ]quinoline (L2). The Be(II) cation is a great size match for the dinitrogen binding pocket of the quinolino[7,8- h ]quinoline ligand as indicated by minimal out-of-plane displacement and ligand distortion parameters.

Objective: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) improves motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but it can also disrupt verbal fluency with significant costs to quality of life. The current study investigated how variability of bilateral active electrode coordinates along the superior/inferior, anterior/posterior, and lateral/medial axes in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or the globus pallidus interna (GPi) contribute to changes in verbal fluency. We predicted that electrode location in the left hemisphere would be linked to changes in fluency, especially in the STN., Methods: Forty PD participants treated with bilateral DBS targeting STN (n = 23) or GPi (n = 17) completed verbal fluency testing in their optimally treated state before and after DBS therapy. Normalized atlas coordinates from left and right active electrode positions along superior/inferior, anterior/posterior, and lateral/medial axes were used to predict changes in fluency postoperatively, separately for patients with STN and GPi targets., Results: Consistent with prior studies, fluency significantly declined pre- to postsurgery (in both DBS targets). In STN-DBS patients, electrode position along the inferior to superior axis in the left STN was a significant predictor of fluency changes; relatively more superior left active electrode was associated with the largest fluency declines in STN. Background: Acute subdural hematomas (aSDHs) occur in approximately 10% to 20% of all closed head injury and represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in traumatic brain injury patients. Conventional craniotomy is an invasive intervention with the potential for excess blood loss and prolonged postoperative recovery time., Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of minimally invasive endoscopy for evacuation of aSDHs in a pilot feasibility study., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of consecutive patients with aSDHs who underwent surgical treatment at our institution with minimally invasive endoscopy using the Apollo/Artemis Neuro Evacuation Device (Penumbra, Alameda, California) between April 2015 and July 2018., Results: The study cohort comprised three patients. The Glasgow Coma Scale on admission was 15 for all 3 patients, median preoperative hematoma volume was 49.5 cm3 (range 44-67.8 cm3), median postoperative degree of hematoma evacuation was 88% (range 84%-89%), and median modified Rankin Scale at discharge was 1 (range 0-3)., Conclusion: Endoscopic evacuation of aSDHs can be a safe and effective alternative to craniotomy in appropriately selected patients. Caudaequinatumors are histologically diverse. International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O3) confers dedicated site code (C72. 1) for cauda equina. This code is excluded during analyses of other primary spinal cord tumors. In this retrospective study, the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data for primary cauda equina tumors (PCET, C72. 1) excluding the tumors of spinal meninges (C70. 1) from 1992 to 2015 were reviewed. Demographic characteristics, tumor types, and clinical outcomes were analyzed using univariable analysis. Overall survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meier methods and compared for age, histology and treatment type. 293 patients with PCET met inclusion criteria. The most common tumors comprised schwannoma (32%), myxopapillary ependymoma (21%), malignant ependymoma (22%). The median age at diagnosis was 50 years (range < 1 year to 98 years), 57% of patients were males. 77% of the patients underwent surgery. Median follow up time for these patients was 70 months. Of the 293 patients, 250 (85%) were living at the end of 2015. The cause of death was tumor or CNS related in 15 patients. 136 patients were followed for <5 years, of which 102 were censored and 34 died (11.6%) before 5 years. Using univariable analysis, age at diagnosis (Hazard Ratio, HR 1.05; confidence interval, CI 1.03-1.07; p < 0.001), malignant tumor type (HR 2.88, CI 1.15-7.19, p = 0.0239) and absence of surgical intervention (HR 2.54, CI1.26-5.11, p = 0.0092) were predictors of increased mortality. Purpose: Thorium-226 (half-life 30.6 m) is a radionuclide of interest for use in targeted alpha therapy applications. Due to its short half-life, 226 Th must be provided through a radionuclide generator system from its parent 230 U (20.8 d). Furthermore, as the half-life of 226 Th is very short, it should be provided in a form that is directly amenable to use in biomedical applications., Methods: A reverse radionuclide generator system was developed employing a DGA extraction chromatography column. A 230 U/ 226 Th parent/daughter solution in equilibrium is added to a DGA column in >6 M HCl. The parent 230 U is eluted first in 0.1 M HNO 3 followed by elution of 226 Th in 0.1 M citrate buffer pH 5., Results: Thorium-226 was recovered from the radionuclide generator column with >96% yield. Greater than 99.5% of the 230 U parent was isolated for reuse in the generator. Long term evaluation over six weeks demonstrated consistent supply of 226 Th with greater than 99.5% radionuclidic purity. The only contaminant found in the final product was 230 U (<0.5%)., Conclusions: The reverse radionuclide generator described herein was shown to be a feasible method for providing 226 Th in high yield, purity and in a chemical form that is amenable for direct use in biomedical applications., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator and mechanical thrombectomy comprise the two major treatments for acute ischemic stroke. Tissue plasminogen activator has been used for more than two decades and guidelines for hemodynamic management following tissue plasminogen activator administration are well established. However, mechanical thrombectomy is a relatively newer therapy and there is a paucity of evidence regarding hemodynamic management following large vessel occlusion strokes. The important tenets guiding the pathophysiology of large vessel occlusion strokes include understanding of cerebral autoregulation, collateral circulation, and blood pressure variability. In this narrative review, we discuss the current American Heart Association-American Stroke Association guidelines for the early management of acute ischemic stroke during different phases of the illness, encountered at different sections of a hospital including the emergency room, the neuro-interventional suite, and the intensive care unit. There is emerging evidence with regard to post-recanalization blood pressure management following large vessel occlusion strokes. Future research directions will include rea-ltime blood pressure variability assessments, identifying the extent of impaired autoregulation, and providing guidelines related to range and personalized blood pressure trajectories for patients following large vessel occlusion strokes.

Background: The microTargetingTM MicrotableTM Platform is a novel stereotactic system that can be more rapidly fabricated than currently available 3D-printed alternatives. We present the first case series of patients who underwent deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery guided by this platform and demonstrate its in vivo accuracy., Methods: Ten patients underwent DBS at a single institution by the senior author and 15 leads were placed. The mean age was 69.1 years; four were female. The ventralis intermedius nucleus was targeted for patients with essential tremor and the subthalamic nucleus was targeted for patients with Parkinson's disease., Results: Nine DBS leads in 6 patients were appropriately imaged to enable measurement of accuracy. The mean Euclidean electrode placement error (EPE) was 0.97 ± 0.37 mm, and the mean radial error was 0.80 ± 0.41 mm (n = 9). In the subset of CT scans performed greater than 1 month postoperatively (n = 3), the mean Euclidean EPE was 0.75 ± 0.17 mm and the mean radial error was 0.69 ± 0.17 mm. There were no surgical complications., Conclusion: The MicrotableTM platform is capable of submillimetric accuracy in patients undergoing stereotactic surgery. It has achieved clinical efficacy in our patients without surgical complications and has demonstrated the potential for superior accuracy compared to both traditional stereotactic frames and other common frameless systems., (© 2020 S. A major chemical challenge facing implementation of 225 Ac in targeted alpha therapy-an emerging technology that has potential for treatment of disease-is identifying an 225 Ac chelator that is compatible with in vivo applications. It is unclear how to tailor a chelator for Ac binding because Ac coordination chemistry is poorly defined. Most Ac chemistry is inferred from radiochemical experiments carried out on microscopic scales. Of the few Ac compounds that have been characterized spectroscopically, success has only been reported for simple inorganic ligands. Toward advancing understanding in Ac chelation chemistry, we have developed a method for characterizing Ac complexes that contain highly complex chelating agents using small quantities (μg) of 227 Ac. We successfully characterized the chelation of Ac 3+ by DOTP 8- using EXAFS, NMR, and DFT techniques. To develop confidence and credibility in the Ac results, comparisons with +3 cations (Am, Cm, and La) that could be handled on the mg scale were carried out. We discovered that all M 3+ cations (M = Ac, Am, Cm, La) were completely encapsulated within the binding pocket of the DOTP 8- macrocycle. The computational results highlighted the stability of the M(DOTP) 5- complexes.

Background: Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) of the cerebellum can be life threatening because of mass effect on the brainstem and fourth ventricle. Suboccipital craniectomy is currently the treatment of choice for cerebellar ICH evacuation. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is currently being investigated for the treatment of supratentorial ICH. However, its utility for cerebellar ICH is unknown. The aim of this multicenter, retrospective cohort study is to evaluate the outcomes of MIS for cerebellar ICH., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients with cerebellar ICH who underwent MIS using either the Apollo or Artemis Neuro Evacuation Device (Penumbra Inc., Alameda, California, USA) at 3 institutions from May 2015 to July 2018. Data from each contributing center were deidentified and pooled for analysis., Results: The study cohort comprised 6 patients with a median age of 62.5 years. The median pre- and postoperative Glasgow Coma Scale scores were 10.5 and 15, respectively. The median degree of hematoma evacuation was 97.5% (range, 79%-100%). There were no procedural complications, but 1 patient required subsequent craniectomy (retreatment rate 17%). The median discharge modified Rankin scale score was 4, including 3 patients who improved to functional independence at follow-up durations of 3 months. Two patients died from medical complications (mortality rate 33%)., Conclusions: MIS could represent a reasonable alternative to conventional surgery for the treatment of appropriately selected patients with cerebellar ICH. Protactinium-230 ( t 1/2 = 17.4 d) is the parent isotope of 230 U ( t 1/2 = 20.8 d), a radionuclide of interest for targeted alpha therapy (TAT). Column chromatographic methods have been developed to separate no-carrier-added 230 Pa from proton irradiated thorium targets and accompanying fission products. Results reported within demonstrate the use of novel sulfur bearing chromatographic extraction resins for the selective separation of protactinium. The recovery yield of 230 Pa was 93 ± 4% employing a R 3 P═S type commercially available resin and 88 ± 4% employing a DGTA (diglycothioamide) containing custom synthesized extraction chromatographic resin. The radiochemical purity of the recovered 230 Pa was measured via high purity germanium γ-ray spectroscopy to be >99.5% with the remaining radioactive contaminant being 95 Nb due to its similar chemistry to protactinium. Measured equilibrium distribution coefficients for protactinium, thorium, uranium, niobium, radium, and actinium on both the R 3 P═S type and the DGTA resin in hydrochloric acid media are reported, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time.

The separation of Th, Pa, and U is of high importance in many applications including nuclear power, nuclear waste, environmental and geochemistry, nuclear forensics and nuclear medicine. Diglycolamide (DGA)-based resins have shown the ability to separate many elements, however, these resins consist of non-covalent impregnation of the DGA molecules on the resin backbone resulting in co-elution of the extraction molecule during separation cycles, therefore limiting their long-term and repeated use. Covalently binding the DGA molecules onto silica is one way to overcome this issue. Herein, measured equilibrium distribution coefficients of normal extraction chromatographic DGA resin and a covalently bound form (KIT-6-N-DGA sorbent) are reported. Several differences are observed between the two systems, the most significant being observed for uranium, which demonstrated significantly lower sorption behavior on KIT-6-N-DGA. These results indicate that U can effectively be separated from Th and Pa using KIT-6-N-DGA, a task that could not be completed with the use of normal DGA alone.

Alpha-emitters are radionuclides that decay through the emission of high linear energy transfer α-particles and possess favorable pharmacologic profiles for cancer treatment. When coupled with monoclonal antibodies, peptides, small molecules, or nanoparticles, the excellent cytotoxic capability of α-particle emissions has generated a strong interest in exploring targeted α-therapy in the pre-clinical setting and more recently in clinical trials in oncology. Multiple obstacles have been overcome by researchers and clinicians to accelerate the development of targeted α-therapies, especially with the recent improvement in isotope production and purification, but also with the development of innovative strategies for optimized targeting. Numerous studies have demonstrated the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of the targeted α-therapy. Radium-223 ( 223 Ra) dichloride (Xofigo®) is the first α-emitter to have received FDA approval for the treatment of prostate cancer with metastatic bone lesions. There is a significant increase in the number of clinical trials in oncology using several radionuclides such as Actinium-225 ( 225 Ac), Bismuth-213 ( 213 Bi), Lead-212 ( 212 Pb), Astatine ( 211 At) or Radium-223 ( 223 Ra) assessing their safety and preliminary activity. This review will cover their therapeutic application as well as summarize the investigations that provide the foundation for further clinical development.

American football is played in a chaotic visual environment filled with relevant and distracting information. We investigated the hypothesis that collegiate football players show exceptional skill at shielding their response execution from the interfering effects of distraction ( interference control ). The performances of 280 football players from National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I football programs were compared to age-matched controls in a variant of the Eriksen flanker task (Eriksen and Eriksen, 1974). This task quantifies the magnitude of interference produced by visual distraction on split-second response execution. Overall, football athletes and age controls showed similar mean reaction times (RTs) and accuracy rates. However, football athletes were more proficient at shielding their response execution speed from the interfering effects of distraction (i.e., smaller flanker effect costs on RT). Offensive and defensive players showed smaller interference costs compared to controls, but defensive players showed the smallest costs. All defensive positions and one offensive position showed statistically smaller interference effects when compared directly to age controls. These data reveal a clear cognitive advantage among football athletes at executing motor responses in the face of distraction, the existence and magnitude of which vary by position. Individual differences in cognitive control may have important implications for both player selection and development to improve interference control capabilities during play.

Column chromatographic methods have been developed to separate no-carrier-added 111 Ag from proton irradiated thorium targets and associated fission products as an ancillary process to an existing 225 Ac separation design. Herein we report the separation of 111 Ag both prior and subsequent to 225 Ac recovery using CL resin, a solvent impregnated resin (SIR) that carries an organic solution of alkyl phosphine sulfides (R 3 P = S) and alkyl phosphine oxides (R 3 P = O). The recovery yield of 111 Ag was 93 ± 9% with a radiochemical purity of 99.9% (prior) and 87 ± 9% with a radiochemical purity of 99.9% (subsequent to) 225 Ac recovery. Both processes were successfully performed with insignificant impacts on 225 Ac yields or quality. Measured equilibrium distribution coefficients for silver and ruthenium (a residual contaminant) on CL resin in hydrochloric and nitric acid media are reported, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. Ruthenium-103 is the parent isotope of 103mRh (t1/2 56.1 min), an isotope of interest for Auger electron therapy. During the proton irradiation of thorium targets, large amounts of 103Ru are generated through proton induced fission. The development of a two part chemical separation process to isolate 103Ru in high yield and purity from a proton irradiated thorium matrix on an analytical scale is described herein. The first part employed an anion exchange column to remove cationic actinide/lanthanide impurities along with the majority of the transition metal fission products. Secondly, an extraction chromatographic column utilizing diglycolamide functional groups was used to decontaminate 103Ru from the remaining impurities. This method resulted in a final radiochemical yield of 83 ± 5% of 103Ru with a purity of 99.9%. Additionally, measured nuclear reaction cross sections for the formation of 103Ru and 106Ru via the 232Th(p,f)103,106Ru reactions are reported within.

Actinium-225 is a potential Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT) isotope. It can be generated with high energy (≥ 100MeV) proton irradiation of thorium targets. The main challenge in the chemical recovery of 225 Ac lies in the separation from thorium and many fission by-products most importantly radiolanthanides. We recently developed a separation strategy based on a combination of cation exchange and extraction chromatography to isolate and purify 225 Ac. In this study, actinium and lanthanide equilibrium distribution coefficients and column elution behavior for both TODGA (N,N,N',N'-tetra-n-octyldiglycolamide) and TEHDGA (N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-2-ethylhexyldiglycolamide) were determined. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed and were in agreement with experimental observations providing the foundation for understanding of the selectivity for Ac and lanthanides on different DGA (diglycolamide) based resins. The results of Gibbs energy (ΔG aq ) calculations confirm significantly higher selectivity of DGA based resins for Ln III over Ac III in the presence of nitrate. A new method has been developed for the isolation of 223,224,225 Ra, in high yield and purity, from a proton irradiated 232 Th matrix. Herein we report an all-aqueous process using multiple solid-supported adsorption steps including a citrate chelation method developed to remove >99.9% of the barium contaminants by activity from the final radium product. A procedure involving the use of three columns in succession was developed, and the separation of 223,224,225 Ra from the thorium matrix was obtained with an overall recovery yield of 91 ± 3%, average radiochemical purity of 99.9%, and production yields that correspond to physical yields based on previously measured excitation functions.

Scandium-44g (half-life 3.97h) shows promise for application in positron emission tomography (PET), due to favorable decay parameters. One of the sources of 44g Sc is the 44 Ti/ 44g Sc generator, which can conveniently provide this radioisotope on a daily basis at a diagnostic facility. Titanium-44 (half-life 60.0 a), in turn, can be obtained via proton irradiation of scandium metal targets. A substantial 44 Ti product batch, however, requires high beam currents, long irradiation times and an elaborate chemical procedure for 44 Ti isolation and purification. This study describes the production of a combined 175MBq (4.7mCi) batch yield of 44 Ti in week long proton irradiations at the Los Alamos Isotope Production Facility (LANL-IPF) and the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BNL-BLIP). A two-step ion exchange chromatography based chemical separation method is introduced: first, a coarse separation of 44 Ti via anion exchange sorption in concentrated HCl results in a 44 Tc/Sc separation factor of 10 2 -10 3 . A second, cation exchange based step in HCl media is then applied for 44 Ti fine purification from residual Sc mass. Introduction: Rhenium-186g (t 1/2 = 3.72 d) is a β - emitting isotope suitable for theranostic applications. Current production methods rely on reactor production by way of the reaction 185 Re(n,γ) 186g Re, which results in low specific activities limiting its use for cancer therapy. Production via charged particle activation of enriched 186 W results in a 186g Re product with a higher specific activity, allowing it to be used more broadly for targeted radiotherapy applications. This targets the unmet clinical need for more efficient radiotherapeutics., Methods: A target consisting of highly enriched, pressed 186 WO 3 was irradiated with protons at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Isotope Production Facility (LANL-IPF) to evaluate 186g Re product yield and quality. LANL-IPF was operated in a dedicated nominal 40 MeV mode. Alkaline dissolution followed by anion exchange chromatography was used to isolate 186g Re from the target material. Phantom and radiolabeling studies were conducted with the produced 186g Re activity., Results: A 186g Re batch yield of 1.38 ± 0.09 MBq/μAh or 384.9 ± 27.3 MBq/C was obtained after 16.5 h in a 205 μA average/230μA maximum current proton beam. The chemical recovery yield was 93% and radiolabeling was achieved with efficiencies ranging from 60-80%. True specific activity of 186g Re at EOB was determined via ICP-AES and amounted to 0.788 ± 0.089 GBq/μg (0.146 ± 0.017 GBq/nmol), which is approximately seven times higher than the product obtained from neutron capture in a reactor. Phantom studies show similar imaging quality to the gold standard 99m Tc., Conclusions: We report a preliminary study of the large-scale production and novel anion exchange based chemical recovery of high specific activity 186g Re from enriched 186 WO 3 targets in a high-intensity proton beam with exceptional chemical recovery and radiochemical purity., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Metal aquo ions occupy central roles in all equilibria that define metal complexation in natural environments. These complexes are used to establish thermodynamic metrics (i.e., stability constants) for predicting metal binding, which are essential for defining critical parameters associated with aqueous speciation, metal chelation, in vivo transport, and so on. As such, establishing the fundamental chemistry of the actinium(III) aquo ion (Ac-aquo ion, Ac(H 2 O) x 3+ ) is critical for current efforts to develop 225 Ac [ t 1/2 = 10.0(1) d] as a targeted anticancer therapeutic agent. However, given the limited amount of actinium available for study and its high radioactivity, many aspects of actinium chemistry remain poorly defined. We overcame these challenges using the longer-lived 227 Ac [ t 1/2 = 21.772(3) y] isotope and report the first characterization of this fundamentally important Ac-aquo coordination complex. Our X-ray absorption fine structure study revealed 10.9 ± 0.5 water molecules directly coordinated to the Ac III cation with an Ac-O H2O distance of 2.63(1) Å. This experimentally determined distance was consistent with molecular dynamics density functional theory results that showed (over the course of 8 ps) that Ac III was coordinated by 9 water molecules with Ac-O H2O distances ranging from 2.61 to 2.76 Å. The data is presented in the context of other actinide(III) and lanthanide(III) aquo ions characterized by XAFS and highlights the uniqueness of the large Ac III coordination numbers and long Ac-O H2O bond distances.

Scandium-44g (half-life 3.97h [1]) shows promise for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of longer biological processes than that of the current gold standard, 18 F, due to its favorable decay parameters. One source of 44g Sc is the long-lived parent nuclide 44 Ti (half-life 60.0 a). A 44 Ti/ 44g Sc generator would have the ability to provide radionuclidically pure 44g Sc on a daily basis. The production of 44 Ti via the 45 Sc(p,2n) reaction requires high proton beam currents and long irradiation times. Recovery and purification of no-carrier added (nca) 44 Ti from scandium metal targets involves complex separation chemistry. In this study, separation systems based on solid phase extraction chromatography were investigated, including branched diglycolamide (BDGA) resin and hydroxamate based ZR resin. Actinium-225 and 213 Bi have been used successfully in targeted alpha therapy (TAT) in preclinical and clinical research. This paper is a continuation of research activities aiming to expand the availability of 225 Ac. The high-energy proton spallation reaction on natural thorium metal targets has been utilized to produce millicurie quantities of 225 Ac. The results of sixteen irradiation experiments of thorium metal at beam energies between 78 and 192MeV are summarized in this work. Irradiations have been conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), while target dissolution and processing was carried out at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Excitation functions for actinium and thorium isotopes, as well as for some of the fission products, are presented. The cross sections for production of 225 Ac range from 3.6 to 16.7mb in the incident proton energy range of 78-192MeV. Based on these data, production of curie quantities of 225 Ac is possible by irradiating a 5.0gcm -2 232 Th target for 10 days in either BNL or LANL proton irradiation facilities., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The use of α-emitting isotopes for radionuclide therapy is a promising treatment strategy for small micro-metastatic disease. The radioisotope (213)Bi is a nuclide that has found substantial use for targeted α-therapy (TAT). The relatively unexplored aqueous chemistry of Bi(3+), however, hinders the development of bifunctional chelating agents that can successfully deliver these Bi radioisotopes to the tumor cells. Here, a novel series of nitrogen-rich macrocyclic ligands is explored for their potential use as Bi-selective chelating agents., Methods: The ligands, 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(py)), 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(3-pyridazylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pyd)), 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(4-pyrimidylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pyr)), and 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-pyrazinylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pz)), were prepared by a previously reported method and investigated here for their abilities to bind Bi radioisotopes. The commercially available and commonly used ligands 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) and N-[(R)-2-amino-3-(p-isothiocyanato-phenyl)propyl]-trans-(S,S)- cyclohexane-1,2-diamine-N,N,N',N",N"-pentaacetic acid (CHX-A''-DTPA) were also explored for comparative purposes. Radio-thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used to measure the binding kinetics and stabilities of the complexes formed. The long-lived isotope, (207)Bi (t(1/2)=32 years), was used for these studies. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also employed to probe the ligand interactions with Bi(3+) and the generator parent ion Ac(3+)., Results: In contrast to DOTA and CHX-A''-DTPA, these nitrogen-rich macrocycles selectively chelate Bi(3+) in the presence of the parent isotope Ac(3+). Among the four tested, L(py) was found to exhibit optimal Bi(3+)-binding kinetics and complex stability. L(py) complexes Bi(3+) more rapidly than DOTA, yet the resulting complexes are of similar stability. DFT calculations corroborate the experimentally observed selectivity of these ligands for Bi(3+) over Ac(3+)., Conclusion: Taken together, these data implicate L(py) as a valuable chelating agent for the delivery of (213)Bi. Its selectivity for Bi(3+) and rapid and stable labeling properties warrant further investigation and biological studies., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Actinium-225 (t1/2=9.92d) is an α-emitting radionuclide with nuclear properties well-suited for use in targeted alpha therapy (TAT), a powerful treatment method for malignant tumors. Actinium-225 can also be utilized as a generator for (213)Bi (t1/2 45.6 min), which is another valuable candidate for TAT. Actinium-225 can be produced via proton irradiation of thorium metal; however, long-lived (227)Ac (t1/2=21.8a, 99% β(-), 1% α) is co-produced during this process and will impact the quality of the final product. Thus, accurate assays are needed to determine the (225)Ac/(227)Ac ratio, which is dependent on beam energy, irradiation time and target design. Accurate actinium assays, in turn, require efficient separation of actinium isotopes from both the Th matrix and highly radioactive activation by-products, especially radiolanthanides formed from proton-induced fission. In this study, we introduce a novel, selective chromatographic technique for the recovery and purification of actinium isotopes from irradiated Th matrices. A two-step sequence of cation exchange and extraction chromatography was implemented. Radiolanthanides were quantitatively removed from Ac, and no non-Ac radionuclidic impurities were detected in the final Ac fraction. An (225)Ac spike added prior to separation was recovered at ≥ 98%, and Ac decontamination from Th was found to be ≥ 10(6). The purified actinium fraction allowed for highly accurate (227)Ac determination at analytical scales, i.e., at (227)Ac activities of 1-100 kBq (27 nCi to 2.7 μCi)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Derivatives of the ligand 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) containing pendant N-heterocyclic donors were prepared. The heterocycles pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, and pyrazine were conjugated to cyclen to give 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(py)), 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(3-pyridazylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pyd)), 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(4-pyrimidylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pyr)), and 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-pyrazinylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (L(pz)), respectively. The coordination chemistry of these ligands was explored using the La(3+) ion. Accordingly, complexes of the general formula [La(L)(OTf)](OTf)2, where OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate and L = L(py) (1), L(pyd) (2), L(pyr) (3), and L(pz) (4), were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. Crystal structures of 1 and 2 were also determined by X-ray diffraction studies, which revealed 9-coordinate capped, twisted square-antiprismatic coordination geometries for the central La(3+) ion. The conformational dynamics of 1-4 in solution were investigated by variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy. Dynamic line-shape and Eyring analyses enabled the determination of the activation parameters for the interconversion of enantiomeric forms of the complexes. Unexpectedly, the different pendant N-heterocycles of 1-4 give rise to varying values for the enthalpies and entropies of activation for this process. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the mechanism of this enantiomeric interconversion. Computed activation parameters were consistent with those experimentally determined for 1 but differed somewhat from those of 2-4.

Cross sections for the formation of (225,227)Ac, (223,225)Ra, and (227)Th via the proton bombardment of natural thorium targets were measured at a nominal proton energy of 800 MeV. No earlier experimental cross section data for the production of (223,225)Ra, (227)Ac and (227)Th by this method were found in the literature. A comparison of theoretical predictions with the experimental data shows agreement within a factor of two. Results indicate that accelerator-based production of (225)Ac and (223)Ra is a viable production method., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

Cross sections for (223,)(225)Ra, (225)Ac and (227)Th production by the proton bombardment of natural thorium targets were measured at proton energies below 200 MeV. Our measurements are in good agreement with previously published data and offer a complete excitation function for (223,)(225)Ra in the energy range above 90 MeV. Comparison of theoretical predictions with the experimental data shows reasonable-to-good agreement. Positron emission tomography (PET) of slower biological processes calls for the use of longer lived positron emitting radioisotopes. Beyond radionuclide production considerations, practicality and rapidity of subsequent labeling chemistry further limits the selection of radioisotopes with potentially favorable nuclear properties. One additional limitation is the availability of PET radiotracers at the point-of-care with appropriate on-site production methodologies or robust radionuclide generator systems. The positron emitter (72)As (half-life 26 h) is generated via decay of (72)Se (half-life 8.5 d); this pair comprises and excellent generator system for clinical availability of a longer lived PET isotope. Many (72)Se/As generator systems have been introduced utilizing the rich interplay of Se(IV)/Se(VI) and As(III) /As(V) chemical behavior. This paper describes available generator concepts, and briefly outlines some current arsenic labeling methodologies for the introduction of radioarsenic into biomolecules.

Selenium-72 production by the proton bombardment of a natural NaBr target has been successfully demonstrated at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Isotope Production Facility (LANL-IPF). Arsenic-72 (half life 26 h) is a medium-lived positron emitting radionuclide with the major advantage of being formed as the daughter of another "generator" radioisotope (Se-72, 8.5 d). A (72)Se/(72)As generator would be the preferred mechanism for clinical utilization of (72)As for positron emission tomography (PET). No portable (72)Se/(72)As generator system has been demonstrated for convenient, repeated (72)As elution ("milking"). In this work, we describe (72)Se production and recovery from irradiated NaBr targets using a 100 MeV proton beam. We also introduce an (72)As generator principle based on (72)Se chelation followed by liquid-liquid extraction, which will be transferred to a solid-phase sorption/elution system., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The covalent attachment of tris(allyl)iridium to partially dehydroxylated gamma-alumina is found to proceed via surface hydroxyl group protonation of one allyl ligand to form an immobilized bis(allyl)iridium moiety, (=AlO)Ir(allyl)(2), as characterized by CP-MAS (13)C NMR, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and Ir L(3) edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) measurements taken on unsupported Ir(allyl)(3) and several associated tertiary phosphine addition complexes suggest that the eta(3)-allyl ligands generally account for an Ir-C coordination number of 2 rather than 3, with an average Ir-C distance of 2.16 A. Using this knowledge, combined EXAFS and X-ray absorption near-edge structure studies reveal that a small amount of Ir(0) is also formed upon reaction of Ir(allyl)(3) with the surface. It was found that the addition of either 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide or carbon monoxide to the supported complex allows spectroscopic identification of the supported bis(allyl)iridium complexes, (=AlO)Ir(allyl)(2)(CNAr) [Ar = 2,6-(CH(3))(2)C(6)H(4)] and (=AlO)Ir(allyl)(2)(CO)(2), respectively. Although samples of the supported bis(allyl)iridium complex are active for the dehydrogenation of cyclohexane to benzene at temperatures between 180 and 220 degrees C, in situ temperature-programmed reaction XAFS and continuous-flow reactor studies suggest that Ir(0) nanoparticles, rather than a well-defined Ir(3+) complex, are responsible for the observed activity.

We report an investigation of complexes of the type M(2)(dmp)(4) (M = Mo, Cr; dmp = 2,6-dimethoxyphenyl) using resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopy, Cr isotopic substitution, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Assignment of the Mo-Mo stretching vibration in the Mo(2) species is straightforward, as evidenced by a single resonance-enhanced band at 424 cm(-1), consistent with an essentially unmixed metal-metal stretch, and overtones of this vibration. On the other hand, the Cr(2) congener has no obvious metal-metal stretching mode near 650-700 cm(-1), where empirical predictions based on the Cr-Cr distance as well as DFT calculations suggest that this vibration should appear if unmixed. Instead, three bands are observed at 345, 363, and 387 cm(-1) that (a) have relative RR intensities that are sensitive to the Raman excitation frequency, (b) exhibit overtones and combinations in the RR spectra, and (c) shift in frequency upon isotopic substitution ((50)Cr and (54)Cr). DFT calculations are used to model the vibrational data for the Mo(2) and Cr(2) systems. Both the DFT results and empirical predictions are in good agreement with experimental observations in the Mo(2) complex, but both, while mutually consistent, differ radically from experiment in the Cr(2) complex. Our experimental and theoretical results, especially the Cr isotope shifts, clearly demonstrate that the potential energy of the Cr-Cr stretching coordinate is distributed among several normal modes having both Cr-Cr and Cr-ligand character. The general significance of these results in interpreting spectroscopic observations in terms of the nature of metal-metal multiple bonding is discussed.

A comparative examination of the electronic interactions across a series of trimetallic actinide and mixed lanthanide-actinide and lanthanum-actinide complexes is presented. Using reduced, radical terpyridyl ligands as conduits in a bridging framework to promote intramolecular metal-metal communication, studies containing structural, electrochemical, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy are reported for (C(5)Me(5))(2)An[-N horizontal lineC(Bn)(tpy-M{C(5)Me(4)R}(2))](2) (where An = Th(IV), U(IV); Bn = CH(2)C(6)H(5); M = La(III), Sm(III), Yb(III), U(III); R = H, Me, Et) to reveal effects dependent on the identities of the metal ions and R-groups. The electrochemical results show differences in redox energetics at the peripheral "M" site between complexes and significant wave splitting of the metal- and ligand-based processes indicating substantial electronic interactions between multiple redox sites across the actinide-containing bridge. Most striking is the appearance of strong electronic coupling for the trimetallic Yb(III)-U(IV)-Yb(III), Sm(III)-U(IV)-Sm(III), and La(III)-U(IV)-La(III) complexes, [8](-), [9b](-), and [10b](-), respectively, whose calculated comproportionation constant K(c) is slightly larger than that reported for the benchmark Creutz-Taube ion. X-ray absorption studies for monometallic metallocene complexes of U(III), U(IV), and U(V) reveal small but detectable energy differences in the "white-line" feature of the uranium L(III)-edges consistent with these variations in nominal oxidation state. The sum of these data provides evidence of 5f/6d-orbital participation in bonding and electronic delocalization in these multimetallic f-element complexes. An improved, high-yielding synthesis of 4'-cyano-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine is also reported.

Actinide complexes of the redox-active ligand (dpp-BIAN)(2-) (dpp-BIAN = 1,2-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)acenaphthylene), U(dpp-BIAN)(2) (1), U(dpp-BIAN)(2)(THF) (1-THF), and Th(dpp-BIAN)(2)(THF) (2-THF), have been prepared. Solid-state magnetic and single-crystal X-ray data for complex 1 indicate a ground-state U(IV)-pi*(4) configuration, whereas a (dpp-BIAN)(2-)-to-uranium electron transfer occurs for 1-THF, resulting in a U(III)-pi*(3) ground configuration. The solid-state magnetic data also indicate that interconversion between the two forms of the complex is possible, limited only by the ability of tetrahydrofuran (THF) vapor to penetrate the solid upon cooling of the sample. In contrast to those in the solid state, spectroscopic data acquired in THF indicate only the presence of the U(IV)-pi*(4) form for 1-THF in solution, evidenced by electronic absorption spectra and by measurement of the solution magnetic moment in THF-d(8) using the Evans method. Also reported is the electrochemistry of the complexes collected in CH(2)Cl(2), CF(3)C(6)H(5), and THF. As expected from the solution spectroscopic data, only small differences are observed in half-wave potentials of ligand-based processes in the presence of THF, consistent with the solution U(IV)-pi*(4) configuration of the complexes in all cases. Density functional theory calculations were undertaken for complexes 1 and 1-THF to determine if intrinsic energetic or structural factors underlie the observed charge-transfer process. While the calculated optimized geometries agree well with experimental results, it was not possible to arrive at a convergent solution for 1-THF in the U(III)-pi*(3) configuration. However, perturbations in the orbital energies in 1 versus 1-THF for the U(IV)-pi*(4) configuration do point to a diminished highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap in 1-THF, consistent with the solid-state magnetic data. These results represent the first example of a stable and well-defined, reversible intramolecular electron transfer in an actinide complex with redox-active ligands.

Addition of PMe3 to Mo2(allyl)4 afforded Mo2(allyl)4(PMe3)2, in which two of the allyl groups adopt an unprecedented micro2-eta1,eta3 bonding mode; theoretical studies elucidate the roles of the sigma- and pi-donor ligands in the interplay of metal-allyl and metal-metal bonding.

A new complex, Cp* 2Sm(tpy) ( 1, where Cp* = C 5Me 5, tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) and its one-electron oxidized congener [Cp* 2Sm(tpy)]PF 6 ([ 1] (+)) have been synthesized and characterized with the aim of comparing their electronic and magnetic behavior to the known ytterbium analogues: Cp* 2Yb(tpy) ( 2) and [Cp* 2Yb(tpy)]OTf ([ 2] ( + )). These new samarium complexes have been characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, optical spectroscopy, and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements. All data for 1 indicate a Sm(III)-tpy* (-)[(4f) (5)-(pi*) (1)] ground-state electronic configuration similar to that found previously for 2 [(4f) (13)-(pi*) (1)]. Structural comparisons reveal that there are no significant changes in the overall geometries associated with the neutral and cationic samarium and ytterbium congeners aside from those anticipated based upon the lanthanide contraction. The redox potentials for the divalent Cp* 2Ln(THF) n precursors ( E 1/2(Sm (2+)) = -2.12 V, E 1/2(Yb (2+)) = -1.48 V) are consistent with established trends, the redox potentials (metal-based reduction and ligand-based oxidation) for 1 are nearly identical to those for 2. The correlation in the optical spectra of 1 and 2 is excellent, as expected for this ligand-radical based electronic structural assignment, but there does appear to be a red-shift ( approximately 400 cm (-1)) in all of the bands of 1 relative to those of 2 that suggests a slightly greater stabilization of the pi* level(s) in the samarium(III) complex compared to that in the ytterbium(III) complex. Similar spectroscopic overlap is observed for the monocationic complexes [ 1] (+) and [ 2] (+). Bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements for 1 reveal significantly different behavior than that of 2 due to differences in the electronic-state structure of the two metal ions. The implications of these differences in magnetic behavior are discussed.

Bimetallic ytterbocene complexes with bridging N-heterocylic ligands have been studied extensively in recent years due to their potential applications ranging from molecular wires to single-molecule magnets. Herein, we review our recent results for a series of ytterbocene polypyridyl bimetallic complexes to highlight the versatility and tunability of these systems based on simple changes in bridging ligand geometry. Our work has involved structural, electrochemical, optical, and magnetic measurements with the goal of better understanding the electronic and magnetic communication between the two ytterbium metal centers in this new class of bimetallics.

Reaction of two equivalents of [(C5Me4Et)2U(CH3)(Cl)] (6) or [(C5Me5)2Th(CH3)(Br)] (7) with 1,4-dicyanobenzene leads to the formation of the novel 1,4-phenylenediketimide-bridged bimetallic organoactinide complexes [((C5Me4Et)2(Cl)U)(2)(mu-(N=C(CH3)-C6H4-(CH3)C=N))] (8) and [((C5Me5)2(Br)Th)2(mu-(N=C(CH3)-C6H4- (CH3)C==N))] (9), respectively. These complexes were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. Metal-metal interactions in these isovalent bimetallic systems were assessed by means of cyclic voltammetry, UV-visible/NIR absorption spectroscopy, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. Although evidence for magnetic coupling between metal centers in the bimetallic U IV/U IV (5f2-5f2) complex is ambiguous, the complex displays appreciable electronic communication between the metal centers through the pi system of the dianionic diketimide bridging ligand, as judged by voltammetry. The transition intensities of the f-f bands for the bimetallic U IV/U IV system decrease substantially compared to the related monometallic ketimide chloride complex, [(C5Me5)2U(Cl)(-N=C(CH3)-(3,4,5-F(3)-C6H2))] (11). Also reported herein are new synthetic routes to the actinide starting materials [(C5Me4Et)(2)U(CH3)(Cl)] (6) and [(C5Me5)2Th(CH3)(Br)] (7) in addition to the syntheses and structures of the monometallic uranium complexes [(C5Me4Et)2UCl2] (3), [(C5Me4Et)2U(CH3)2] (4), [(C5Me4Et)2U(-N==C(CH3)-C6H4-C==N)2] (10), and 11.

The ligand 1-methyl-3,5-bis(2,2':6',2' '-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene has been employed in the synthesis of a new bimetallic ytterbocene complex [(Cp*)2Yb](1-methyl-3,5-bis(2,2':6',2' '-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene)[Yb(Cp*)2] (1) and the doubly oxidized congener [1]2+ in an attempt to determine the impact of the bridging ligand geometry on the magnetic/electronic properties as compared to the previously reported 1,4-analog [(Cp*)2Yb](1,4-di(terpyridyl)benzene)[Yb(Cp*)2] (2). Electrochemical, electronic, and magnetic data provide compelling evidence that the 1,3-geometry associated with the bridging ligand of 1 has done an effective job of inhibiting electronic communication between metal centers and magnetic coupling of spin carriers at room temperature as compared to 2. In fact, the physical data associated with 1 are quite similar to those reported for the monometallic analog (Cp*)2Yb(tpy) (3). In particular, the f-f profile of [1]2+ is nearly identical to that of [3]+ in its spectral features but with an almost exact doubling of the intensities. Further, the electronic coupling between metal centers as manifested in the potential separation between metal-based reduction waves has for the first time in these bimetallic ytterbocene complexes been found to go to zero for 1. Thus, the linkage isomerism at the phenyl coupling unit has induced a change in the ground-state electronic configuration from the singlet dianion-bridged (4f)13(pi*)2(4f)13 state found in 2 to the diradical-bridged (4f)13(piA*)1(piB*)1(4f)13 state in 1. This diradical formulation on the bridging ligand in 1 is supported by DFT calculations for the uncomplexed doubly reduced ligand that indicate the ground-state configuration is a singlet diradical state with the triplet-diradical state lying to slightly higher energy. Magnetic characterization of 1 is most consistent with the behavior previously observed for monometallic analogs such as 3, and there is no evidence of long-range magnetic ordering such as that observed for 2. In addition, X-ray crystallographic characterization of 1 represents the first case of a structurally characterized 2:1 metal-to-ligand adduct of the 1,3-bis(tpy) framework.

A series of new bulky allyl terpyridyl-ytterbium complexes have been synthesized to determine the effect of allyl ligands on the internal charge-transfer process that exists in these materials. Compared to the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-ytterbocene compound Cp*2Yb(tpyCN) (nu(C(triple bond)N) = 2172 cm(-1)), the symmetrically substituted allyl complex [1,3-(SiMe3)2C3H3]2Yb(tpyCN) possesses a markedly lowered C(triple bond)N frequency of 2130 cm(-1). Furthermore, the electronic nature of these bulky allyl complexes can be tuned, as demonstrated by the C(triple bond)N frequency of the asymmetric derivatives [1-(SiMe3)C3H4]2Yb(tpyCN) and [1-(SiPh3)-3-(SiMe3)C3H3]2Yb(tpyCN) (2171 and 2164 cm(-1), respectively). The differences in these frequencies can be attributed to differences in the ligands' steric and electronic character. Single-crystal X-ray characterization of [1,3-(SiMe3)2C3H3]2Yb(tpy) reveals that the allyl moiety possesses shorter Yb-C and Yb-N bond distances than the Cp* analogue. The magnetic susceptibility data for [1,3-(SiMe3)2C3H3]2Yb(tpy) departs dramatically from the Curie law, with a room-temperature magnetic moment of 2.95 mu(B).

A systematic study of the novel charge-transfer [(f)14-(pi)0-(f)14 --> (f)13-(pi)2-(f)13] electronic state found in 2:1 metal-to-ligand adducts of the type [(Cp)2Yb](BL)[Yb(Cp)2] [BL = tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz) (1), 6',6' '-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,2':4',4'':2'',2'''-quaterpyridine (qtp) (2), 1,4-di(terpyridyl)-benzene (dtb) (3), Cp = (C5Me5)] has been conducted with the aim of determining the effects of increased Yb-Yb separation on the magnetic and electronic properties of these materials. The neutral [(f)13-(pi)2-(f)13], cationic [(f)13-(pi)1-(f)13] and dicationic [(f)13-(pi)0-(f)13] states of these complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray crystallography, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectroscopic and magnetic data for the neutral bimetallic complexes is consistent with an [(f)13(pi)2(f)13] ground-state electronic configuration in which each ytterbocene fragment donates one electron to give a singlet dianionic bridging ligand with two paramagnetic Yb(III) centers. The voltammetric data demonstrate that the electronic interaction in the neutral molecular wires 1-3, as manifested in the separation between successive metal reduction waves, is large compared to analogous transition metal systems. Electronic spectra for the neutral and monocationic bimetallic species are dominated by pi-pi and pi-pi transitions, masking the f-f bands that are expected to best reflect the electronic metal-metal interactions. However, these metal-localized transitions are observed when the electrons are removed from the bridging ligand via chemical oxidation to yield the dicationic species, and they suggest very little electronic interaction between metal centers in the absence of pi electrons on the bridging ligands. Analysis of the magnetic data reveals that the qtp complex displays antiferromagnetic coupling of the type Yb(alpha)(alphabeta)Yb(beta) at approximately 13 K.

Novel 4f-5f complexes of U(IV) and Th(IV) with Yb have been prepared using a terpyridyl-functionalized ketimide linking group. These 4f-5f heterotrimetallic complexes (C5Me5)2An[-N=C(CH2C6H5)(tpyYb(C5Me5)2)]2 (where An = Th, U) exist in Yb(II/III) valence equilibria and exhibit rich electrochemical behavior consistent with electronic coupling between the actinide and Yb(II/III)tpy*- moieties. The magnetic response of the uranium complex, studied qualitatively using a subtraction method, is indicative of a coupled magnetic state between the U(IV) and Yb(III)tpy*- groups at low temperatures. Both the electrochemical and magnetic data are in agreement and are consistent with differences in participation of the actinide valence orbitals in the ketimide bonding.

Our objectives were to devise a cytologic grading system and determine whether it would predict survival of patients with solid-type pancreatic adenocarcinoma. We evaluated 116 consecutive patients from July 2000 to November 2002; they were followed up until September 2003. We scored the following features on rapid Romanowsky-stained endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration smears: cell group architecture, single cells, nuclear grade, mucus, bizarre cells, and necrosis. A cytologic grade (low vs high) was assigned. The Kaplan-Meier estimate of 6-month survival was 76% (SE, 7%) for patients with low-grade tumors vs 50% (SE, 6%) for patients with high-grade carcinoma. The median survival for patients with low-grade vs high-grade tumors was 1 year vs 6 months, respectively (chi2 = 4.45; P = .035). Cox proportional hazards regression showed tumor stage, cancer-specific treatment, and cytologic grade to be independent predictors of survival (P = .001). No other factors (age, mass location, placement of stent, presence of concomitant chronic pancreatitis, race, sex) predicted survival. We devised a grading system that independently predicted survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

The reaction between Os(2)(OAc)(4)Cl(2) and Hap (Hap is 2-anilinopyridine) under prolonged refluxing conditions resulted in an Os(III)(2) compound, Os(2)(ap)(4)Cl(2) (1), that can be crystallized as either the cis-(2,2) isomer from a CH(3)OH-CH(2)Cl(2) solution or the (3,1) isomer from a hexanes-CH(2)Cl(2) solution. Compound 1 undergoes facile reactions with LiC(2)Y to yield a series of Os(2)(ap)(4)(C(2)Y)(2) compounds with Y as Ph (2), ferrocenyl (3), SiMe(3) (4), and C(2)SiMe(3) (5). X-ray diffraction study of compound 2 reveals solvent-dependent isomerism similar to that of the parent compound 1. Compound 1 has Os-Os distances of 2.3937(8) and 2.3913(8) Angstroms for the cis-(2,2) and (3,1) isomers, respectively, and is paramagnetic (S = 1). Both the ethynyl derivatives 2-4 and butadiynyl derivative 5 are diamagnetic and have Os-Os distances of 2.456(1), 2.471(1), and 2.481(1) Angstroms for the cis-(2,2) and (3,1) isomers of 2 and (3,1) isomer of 4, respectively. Compounds 1-5 exhibit multiple one-electron redox couples in their cyclic voltammograms, including a reversible Os(2)(8+/7+) couple for 2. Resonance Raman spectra of both compounds 1 and 2 are reported.

A new N-heterocyclic complex of ytterbocene (Cp(2)Yb(II), Cp = C(5)Me(5)) has been prepared by the addition of 4'-cyano-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine (tpyCN) to Cp(2)Yb(II)(OEt(2)) in toluene to give a dark blue species designated as Cp(2)Yb(tpyCN). The effect of the electron-withdrawing group (-CN) on the redox potentials of the charge-transfer form of this complex [in which an electron is transferred from the f(14) metal center to the lowest unoccupied (pi) molecular orbital of the tpyCN ligand to give a 4f(13)-pi(1) electronic configuration] has been quantified by cyclic voltammetry. The tpyCN ligand stabilizes this configuration by 60 mV more than that in the unsubstituted tpy ligand complex and by 110 mV more than that in the unsubstituted bpy ligand complex. Magnetic susceptibility measurements corroborate the enhanced stabilization of the 4f(13)-pi(1) configuration by the substituted terpyridyl ligand complex. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the magnetic data is most consistent with a thermally induced valence tautomeric equilibrium between this paramagnetic 4f(13)-pi(1) form that dominates near room temperature and the diamagnetic 4f(14)-pi(0) form that dominates at low temperature. Differing coordination modes for the tpyCN ligand to the ytterbocene center have also been confirmed by isolation and X-ray crystallographic characterization of complexes binding through either the cyano nitrogen of tpyCN or the three terpyridyl nitrogen atoms of tpyCN.

The ligand 4,5-dicarboxyimidazole (H(2)DCI) and its methyl derivative 1-methyl-4,5-dicarboxyimidazole (H(2)MDCI) have been shown to bind to Be(II) forming a zwitterionic species that has been structurally characterized. A new dicarboxyimidazole-based polymer has been prepared and its Be-binding properties have been studied using NMR ((1)H and (9)Be) and fluorescence spectroscopy; it represents a rare example of beryllium binding to a polymer. Models of the mononuclear and polymeric Be(II)-binding sites have been studied using density functional theory (DFT), and the (9)Be NMR chemical shifts of these model materials have been calculated for the purpose of direct comparison to experimentally observed values. Differences in the binding modes of the mononuclear and polymeric species are discussed.

The structures of a series of beryllium containing complexes have been optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level and their (9)Be magnetic shielding values have been determined using B3LYP/6-311G+g(2d,p) and the gauge-including atomic orbital (GIAO) method. The calculated chemical shifts are in excellent agreement with experimental values. The performance of a variety of NMR methods (SGO, IGAIM, CSGT) were also examined but were found to be inferior to the GIAO method at the chosen level of theory employed. The theoretical method has been utilized to predict the beryllium chemical shifts of structurally characterized complexes for which no measured (9)Be NMR spectrum exists, and to investigate a literature complex with an unusual (9)Be NMR chemical shift. A new standard for beryllium NMR in nonaqueous solvents has been suggested.

(C5Me5)2Yb x OEt2 reacts with terpyridine and tetrapyridinylpyrazine to afford new mixed-valent systems.

The novel charge-transfer ground state found in alpha,alpha'-diimine adducts of ytterbocene (C(5)Me(5))(2)Yb(L) [L = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen)] in which an electron is spontaneously transferred from the f(14) metal center into the lowest unoccupied (pi*) molecular orbital (LUMO) of the diimine ligand to give an f(13)-L(*)(-) ground-state electronic configuration has been characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-near-IR electronic absorption, and resonance Raman spectroscopies. The voltammetric data demonstrate that the diimine ligand LUMO is stabilized and the metal f orbital is destabilized by approximately 1.0 V each upon complexation for both bpy and phen adducts. The separation between the ligand-based oxidation wave (L(0/-)) and the metal-based reduction wave (Yb(3+/2+)) in the ytterbocene adducts is 0.79 V for both bpy and phen complexes. The UV-vis-near-IR absorption spectroscopic data for both the neutral adducts and the one-electron-oxidized complexes are consistent with those reported recently, but previously unreported bands in the near-IR have been recorded and assigned to ligand (pi*)-to-metal (f orbital) charge-transfer (LMCT) transitions. These optical electronic excited states are the converse of the ground-state charge-transfer process (e.g., f(13)-L(*-) <--> f(14)-L(0)). These new bands occur at approximately 5000 cm(-1) in both adducts, consistent with predictions from electrochemical data, and the spacings of the resolved vibronic bands in these transitions are consistent with the removal of an electron from the ligand pi* orbital. The unusually large intensity observed in the f --> f intraconfiguration transitions for the neutral phenanthroline adduct is discussed in terms of an intensity-borrowing mechanism involving the low-energy LMCT states. Raman vibrational data clearly reveal resonance enhancement for excitation into the low-lying pi* --> pi* ligand-localized excited states, and comparison of the vibrational energies with those reported for alkali-metal-reduced diimine ligands confirms that the ligands in the adducts are reduced radical anions. Differences in the resonance enhancement pattern for the modes in the bipyridine adduct with excitation into different pi* --> pi* levels illustrate the different nodal structures that exist in the various low-lying pi* orbitals.

Structure analysis of the title compound, C(9)H(6)BrNO, has established that bromination of an 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative occurred in the 7-position. Intermolecular and weak intramolecular O-H.N hydrogen bonds are present, the former causing the molecules to pack as hydrogen-bonded dimers in the solid state.
