Background: Person-centred service delivery underpins current approaches to working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. We investigated views of staff from a service organisation regarding their roles in creating desired futures for adults with intellectual disabilities. Methods: Data were gathered from staff of a large organisation that provided a range of services to adults with intellectual disabilities. Respondents were asked to describe their role in assisting an individual with intellectual disability to meet their goals for the future. Responses were analysed using a text analysis programme. Results: Two major themes were identified: 'Support for self-determination' and 'Business-as-usual'. These themes were not entirely separate but had some overlap. There were indications that staff experienced competing demands in their role(s). Conclusion: Although central to person-centred planning, staff who work with adults with intellectual disabilities may not see support of self-determination as a key factor in creating a desired future.

Background: With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), creation and implementation of participants' plans are becoming a research focus. As many families facilitate the implementation of plans, it is important to understand the enablers and barriers to this process. Method: This study investigated the experiences of 20 family groups with adult participants with intellectual disability as they implemented their NDIS plans. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed qualitatively. Results: Results are reported in themes of increased opportunities, navigating bureaucracy, building partnerships and impact on families. Conclusions: Implementing NDIS plans was complex. Funding was appreciated and enabled some adults to work towards their goals. Bureaucracy and the availability of suitable services and support workers were seen to be barriers. Further investigation about how families balance multiple roles as they work with their adult during planning and implementation is needed. Evaluations of the NDIS should include family experiences.

Background: The study reported here investigated the views of staff who worked with adults with intellectual disability regarding the likely future of such adults. Method: Staff were provided with a short vignette portraying an adult with intellectual disability and asked to describe that individual's future in five years and then to indicate the likelihood of the individual's participation in aspects of adult life reflecting life as typically experienced by age peers in the general population. Results: Responses suggested that staff did not expect the adults with intellectual disability to have the same experiences as their peers, although responses to direct questions about participation were more positive than those to the vignette. Conclusions: While choice was seen to be an important determinant of future activity by some staff, others did not see the individual with intellectual disability having a great deal of agency in determining the direction of their life.

This study reports on Australian small-scale exploratory descriptive research into how young people with intellectual disability and their families construct their futures. The aims of this research were to (a) better understand the future aspirations held by young adults with intellectual disability and their parents, (b) identify enablers and barriers to the achievement of these aspirations, and (c) provide insights for career practitioners who support young people with intellectual disability and their parents to achieve their personal and career goals. Participants were four young people with intellectual disabilities aged between 18 and 30 years and their mothers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically. Results provide a nuanced understanding of the issues facing young people with intellectual disabilities and their families in constructing their futures. Suggestions are offered that can inform career development practice and policy.

Background: This article reports research about the experiences of families with an adult child with intellectual disability as they engaged in the NDIS planning processes in Australia. Method: Parents of 19 adults with intellectual disability responded to a number of closed and Likert-type items and provided comments. Responses are reported using frequencies with parental comments used to exemplify their views. Results: The analysis generated insights that included positive perceptions about the availability of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) information; increased choice and control of participants; some concerns about the implementation of plans; and the lack of inclusion of the adult with intellectual disability in the process. Conclusions: The sample may not be broadly generalisable; however, some aspects of the NDIS planning and implementation process require addressing.

This paper reports the use of a dialogic approach to working inclusively with two young people with intellectual disability as part of a Research Reference Committee for a project that examined how adults with intellectual disability and their families plan for their future. The paper begins with an overview of the role of the Research Reference Committee written by the research team to provide the context for reporting. We then discuss and reflect on how we used mediated talk to working with the young people with intellectual disability to develop strategies for enabling them to actively contribute to the reference committee. The third section of the paper was co-written with authors 3 and 4. The structure follows their decisions about how they wanted to write this section in ways that allowed them to tell their stories of participation as narratives, using their own words. In the discussion, we acknowledge the challenges of co-authorship and consider the benefits of using an iterative dialogical approach to enable the active participation of these young people in a reference committee, and as a method of co-authoring that allows a broader dissemination the voices of the young people with intellectual disability in research outputs.

Despite the importance of and advocacy for developing literacy skills for successful and rewarding participation in the community, there remains a common perception that becoming literate is not possible for people with intellectual disabilities. Until recently, limited research has been undertaken to investigate the literacy skills of adults with intellectual disabilities. In particular, research related to opportunities for lifelong learning in community-based organisations, and to the kinds of literacy activities that might be both developmentally and socially appropriate to assist adults with intellectual disabilities to remain active as they age, is limited in relation to older adults with intellectual disabilities. This exploratory project used a range of instruments to gather information about the literacy skills of older adults to identify their literacy needs and wants, and to consider opportunities to enhance and maintain literacy skills existing in an ongoing activity program in one community-based service organisation. This article reports on a case study of an exemplary teacher who was a participant in a professional learning project, WriteIdeas. The teacher provided instructional support in writing to a targeted student with learning difficulties in an inclusive Year 8 English classroom. Analytical frameworks were developed and applied to the data that had been collected from various sources. The case study sheds light on the multi-faceted nature and complexity of providing responsive and tailored instruction in writing to students in an inclusive setting. (Contains 1 figure.)

Learning to move and moving to learn are vital aspects of every child's growth and development. Physical therapists and educators have consistently advocated the importance of being involved in a range of movement activities and games. Movement can provide an avenue for learning and interaction with others and can be linked to language and creative development. Children with Down syndrome (DS) often have a variety of health related problems and movement difficulties that may limit such opportunities. This article briefly outlines the perceptual-motor challenges typically faced by children with DS. Then, a framework for enhancing motor behavior using creative dance and Laban's concepts of movement is presented. (Contains 1 figure.)

Although it is recognized that teachers play a pivot role in shaping the overall attitudes towards students with disabilities in classrooms, little research has focused on redesigning preservice teacher training programs to facilitate more positive feelings in the interactions between teachers and students with disabilities. Specific factors have been shown to influence how teachers interact with students with disabilities. By addressing these factors in preservice teacher training, it is suggested that the classroom practices of future teachers would ultimately be modified. Recently, two Australian universities (The University of Queensland and the University of Southern Queensland) reconfigured their preservice special education courses to address concerns that existing preservice programs are not adequately preparing teachers for inclusive education and the newly developed national standards and guidelines for initial teacher education in Australia. The redesigned courses incorporated a number of innovative practices to help improve students' attitudes toward people with disabilities. The present study investigates the effect of participating in the 10-week special needs course on preservice teachers' attitudes towards people with disabilities. Of particular interest, were any changes concerning preservice teachers' feelings of discomfort during interactions with individuals with disabilities. (Contains 2 tables.)

This study focused on current life circumstances, previous life events, and engagement with productive and enjoyable activities. It examined the association of these variables with mental health problems and mood in a cohort of young adults with Down syndrome. Participants were 49 adults with Down syndrome (age range 20-31 years) and their parents/carers. Adults with Down syndrome completed standardized language assessments, were screened for possible mental health disorders by a psychologist using the Mini Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults with a Developmental Disability, and/or were seen by a psychiatrist with expertise in dual diagnosis. Parents/carers completed measures of adaptive behavior, life events, mood, participation in activities, and psychosocial engagement with these activities. Fifteen participants (30.6%) received a psychiatric diagnosis of a mental health disorder, of which 7 were diagnosed with Depression (14.3% of the sample). Analysis of differences between 3 groups--those without a diagnosis, those with a diagnosis of Depression, and those with a mental health disorder that was not Depression--identified few differences. Although groups did not differ on the participation measure, there was a significant difference between those with no diagnosis and those with a diagnosis of Depression with respect to psychological engagement. Depressed adults were less engaged in their daily activities.

Background: The study reported here was an examination of the reliability of a method for determining acquiescent responding and the capacity to respond to items using a Likert scale response format by adults with an intellectual disability. Method: Reliability of the outcomes of these procedures was investigated using a test-retest design. Associations with receptive vocabulary were examined. Results: The majority of the participants did not demonstrate acquiescent responding. Individuals' responses to the Likert-type discrimination tasks were consistent, although this varied somewhat depending upon the abstractness of the task. There was some association between receptive language age equivalence scores and respondent performance. Conclusion: It is recommended that the pretest protocol (a) be modified to improve its reliability, and (b) this modified version be used with study participants who have an intellectual disability to ascertain the appropriate level of choice to be used for items that use a Likert response format.

An action research investigation into the use of specific reading comprehension strategies with a group of six young adults with Down syndrome revealed a previously undocumented finding in the area of reading comprehension. This was a uniform deficit among the participants to understand the meanings of question words. This deficit was shown to have negative implications on literacy learning and assessment. For example, it affected their responses to strategic questioning; responses on assessments; maintenance of coherent, responsive dialogue; recall of prior knowledge, past experiences and texts; construction of meaning and their ability to retell. An intervention that focussed on the development of understanding the meanings of the question words "who, where, what, when, why and how" and the application of such understanding specifically in reading comprehension, was successfully implemented and is the focus of this paper. The findings suggest that the meanings of Question words should be taught prior to using questioning as a teaching strategy, and before administering assessments that require the learners to answer questions.

Maternal behaviors and child mastery behaviors were examined in 25 children with Down syndrome and 43 typically developing children matched for mental age (24-36 months). During a shared problem-solving task, there were no group differences in maternal directiveness or support for autonomy, and mothers in the two groups used similar verbal strategies when helping their child. There were also no group differences in child mastery behaviors, measured as persistence with two optimally challenging tasks. However, the two groups differed in the relationships of maternal style with child persistence. Children with Down syndrome whose mothers were more supportive of their autonomy in the shared task displayed greater persistence when working independently on a challenging puzzle, while children of highly directive mothers displayed lower levels of persistence. For typically developing children, persistence was unrelated to maternal style, suggesting that mother behaviors may have different causes or consequences in the two groups. (Contains 3 tables.)

Being literate empowers individuals to be effective consumers, to be informed about lifestyle options, to read aesthetically for relaxation and enjoyment and to further their knowledge of people and places that can enable them to participate more fully in communities. However, there are limited literacy opportunities and programs specifically designed to meet the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities across their lifespan. The aim of this Australian National Training Authority funded project was to develop and implement a training, teaching and resource package for the development of literacy for adults with intellectual disabilities. The aim of this project was to assess, develop, train and assist support staff in two community-based services for clients with intellectual disabilities to act as literacy tutors for their clients. The project was undertaken within two disability-service programs using an applied action research approach. The results indicated that the tutors learnt much about tutoring and about the literacy abilities of their clients. There was some initial resistance from the tutors about the value of literacy learning for their clients. However, resistance decreased as tutors developed confidence, and clients demonstrated interest, engagement and skills in the activities. Implications for the effectiveness of such programs lie in the needs to tailor any training specifically to the needs of the support staff; and to provide time for implementation, on-going support and access to appropriate resources. Background: Adults with intellectual disability have a range of significant health problems. If they are to live independently, they need to engage in behaviours that are health promoting, as well as avoiding behaviours that might directly lead to ill health. There is very little research about health-related knowledge and behaviour in this group. Method: A group of 38 adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) and their families participated in this study. A semi-structured interview and a series of tasks were used to collect data on individuals' health knowledge and behaviour relating to 4 aspects of health: hygiene, substance use, exercise and healthy eating. Results: While the majority of young people demonstrated some awareness of basic hygiene, they were not yet at the level where these behaviours could be guaranteed to occur without parental support. Knowledge about substance use, exercise and healthy food was generally poor. Conclusion: Knowledge of most aspects of health assessed in this study was poor and pointed to a gap in the preparation of these young people for independent living. (Contains 1 table.)

This study examined parents' behaviours as they waited with their child. Children were presented with an attractively wrapped gift and then asked not to touch it until the experimenter returned from finishing some work in another room. Three parent groups and their children participated in the study--parents of children with Down syndrome, parents of children with intellectual disability from another cause, and parents of children who were developing typically. There were no significant differences between children in how long they were able to wait before touching the gift. The data from the first two groups were combined for all analyses after it was established that there were no significant differences between them. There were few significant differences between parents of a child with intellectual disability and comparison parents. The former group were more likely to be classified as Authoritarian than were comparison parents, however with one exception, parenting style was unrelated to the strategies parents used in the waiting situation. Very few parents in either group used the opportunity to teach or explicitly praise effective waiting strategies in their children. (Contains 4 tables.)

There has been huge growth in the use of information technology (IT) in classrooms for learners of all ages. It has been suggested that computers in the classroom encourage independent and self-paced learning, provide immediate feedback and improve self-motivation and self-confidence. Concurrently there is increasing interest related to the role of technology in educational programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, although many claims are made about the benefits of computers and software packages there is limited evidence based information to support these claims. Researchers are now starting to look at the specific instructional design features that are hypothesised to facilitate education outcomes rather than the over-emphasis on graphics and sounds. Research undertaken as part of a post-school program (Latch-On: Literacy and Technology--Hands On) at the University of Queensland investigated the use of computers by young adults with intellectual disabilities. The aims of the research reported in this paper were to address the challenges identified in the "hype" surrounding different pieces of educational software and to develop a means of systematically analysing software for use in teaching programs. There is limited information available related to the literacy skills of adults with intellectual disabilities. In this project, information was collected about the contexts, current practices, and clients' abilities in literacy in two community-based disability service programs. Individual assessments were undertaken to collect details of the current literacy levels of adults with intellectual disabilities in day program settings. These assessments focused on receptive language, reading at the letter, word and sentence level, writing vocabulary and connected text, and literacy preferences. Audits were also conducted related to the provision of opportunities for clients accessing these services to engage with literacy including environmental print. Structured day program activities were observed to gather information about current literacy teaching and learning. Implications of the research findings and suggestions for provision of literacy education in these settings are discussed.

Stanford Binet: Fourth Edition (SB:IV) assessments have been collected longitudinally for 195 individuals with Down syndrome. This article discusses individual assessments which were selected for their ability to highlight major concerns that practitioners need to consider when interpreting intelligence test scores with this population. In this study, Intelligence Quotient (IQ) changed substantially for many individuals, demonstrating changes in classification from a mild level of intellectual impairment on initial assessment to a severe level on later assessment. Subtests used in calculating composite scores were found to have a dramatic effect on IQ. There was up to 9 IQ points difference depending on whether only the "core" subtests or all subtests used by the assessor were included in the calculations. Thirty-seven percent of the assessments were at "floor level" (i.e., IQ of 36), despite obvious divergent abilities illustrated by age equivalent scores. Mean Age Equivalent (MAE) scores were also problematic as they failed to adequately represent either the range, or divergence, of abilities of the individuals whose data are presented. Directions for future research are discussed.

This article describes a collaborative and cross-curricula initiative undertaken in the School of Education at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. The project involved developing an integrated approach to providing professional year pre-service secondary teacher education students with experiences that would assist them to develop their knowledge and skills to teach students with special needs in their classrooms. These experiences were undertaken in the authentic teaching and learning context of a post-school literacy program for young adults with intellectual disabilities. In preliminary interviews pre-service teachers revealed that they lacked experience, knowledge and understanding related to teaching students with special needs, and felt that their teacher education program lacked focus in this field. This project was developed in response to these expressed needs. Through participating in the project, pre-service teachers' knowledge and understanding about working with students with diverse learning needs were developed as they undertook real and purposeful tasks in an authentic context.

The purpose of reading is for the reader to construct meaning from the text. For many young adults with Down syndrome, knowing what the text is all about is difficult, and so for them the activity of reading becomes simply the practice of word calling. It is suggested in the literature that for those individuals with Down syndrome, learning can continue into adolescence and that this may be the optimal time for learning to occur. However, a review of the literature revealed limited empirical research specifically relating to the reading comprehension of young adults with Down syndrome. Recent findings from Latch-OnTM(Literacy And Technology Hands On), a research-based literacy and technology program for young adults with Down syndrome at the University of Queensland, revealed that comprehension remained the significant area of difficulty and showed least improvement (Moni & Jobling, 2001). It was suggested by Moni and Jobling (2001) that explicit instruction in comprehension using a variety of strategies and meaningful, relevant texts was required to improve the ability of young adults with Down syndrome to construct meaning from written texts. This paper is based on an action research project that was developed within the Latch-OnTM program. The project utilised a modification of Elliot's (1991) action research model and was conducted to investigate specific teaching and learning strategies that would enhance the reading comprehension of young adults with Down syndrome. The participants were 6 young adults with Down syndrome ranging in age from 18 to 25 years. As the data from this project are still being analysed, preliminary findings of one participant are presented as a case study. The preliminary findings appear to indicate that the program of specific teaching and learning reading comprehension strategies used in this project was beneficial in the participant's reading comprehension. This study investigated the attitudes of 354 Australian parents who have a child with a disability attending a state school. Many parents favored inclusion, some would favor it if additional resources were provided, and a small number of parents favored special placement. Six tables provide detailed results. Tutoring sessions within a LATCH-ON (Literacy and Technology-Hands On) program were provided to a 19-year-old woman with Down syndrome. Instruction focused primarily on phonics instruction, as well as other decoding strategies. She developed the ability to associate consonant and vowel sounds with letter presentations and to recognize whole word patterns. (Contains references.) (CR)

Following an examination of the ways in which literacy is taught in the Literacy and Technology Hands-On (LATCH-ON) project at the University of Queensland, Australia, this article describes some of the reading-related literacy learning of 17 young adults with Down syndrome who participated in the 2-year course. Issues of health education programming for people with intellectual disability are discussed. Three aspects of health education programming are considered: physical activity, general health knowledge, and social supports for health. A study investigated the differing interactional patterns of 1197 Australian preservice teachers with people with disabilities. Results indicate that even though preservice teachers reported being fearful and concerned about their own vulnerability, these concerns did not appear to cause them excess discomfort in their contact with people with disabilities. This article describes a six-session program designed to help seven Australian young adults (ages 18-21) with Down syndrome understand friendships better. During the sessions, students explored and discussed various types of friendships and the emotions associated with them, using the students' own experiences and videos in conjunction with structured materials. A study investigated the motor development in 99 Australian children (ages 10-16) with Down syndrome. Results showed that the children's motor proficiency continued to progress into adolescence and that there were a wide range of inter- and intra-individual differences in their skill levels and rates of progress. A key goal of the NDIS, the federally funding individualised funding scheme for people with a disability in Australia, is to facilitate an ordinary life for them in their communities. This study examined family perceptions of the contribution NDIS made to create an ordinary life for their adult member with intellectual disability. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 families. The families found this to be a complex process in that while the move to the new funding system supported some elements of a life more aligned to that of similar aged peers, there were also a number of missed opportunities. The opportunities that were available to the adult with intellectual disability were affected by stakeholders' differing views of disability. NDIS presents an opportunity to continue to build towards enabling people with a disability to make their own choices and, with support when needed, build a life similar to their peers. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new federal individualised funding scheme for people with a disability in Australia. The National Disability Insurance Scheme gives people with a disability their own funding. This helps them to be able to make their own choices about what they want to do and what support they need. The National Disability Insurance Scheme hopes to support an ordinary life for people with a disability in their communities. This study investigated how it is working for adults with intellectual disability. It showed that it is a complicated process. Some aspects of the National Disability Insurance Scheme are working well but there are missed opportunities. There is a need to keep talking about how people think about disability so we can understand the impact different views have on the National Disability Insurance Scheme planning and outcomes for adults with intellectual disability. This paper examines the characteristics of "play" within the conceptual framework of early education for intellectually disabled children. It suggests that early intervention programs and strategies may have transformed "play" into "work," and play for its own sake may sometimes be perceived as less important than other defined goals. The purpose was to develop an evaluative case study of six 3-hr sessions, spaced over 3 months, of psychological skills training (PST) provided to athletes with an intellectual disability who were training for the Basketball Australia State Championships. Participants were 7 males and 7 females, aged 15.8 to 27.1 years, with a receptive language level of 7 to 13.7 years, 2 female coaches, 2 psychologists, and 1 registered psychologist supervisor. Sessions focused specifically on stress management, with primary attention given to cue words, breathing techniques, and positive thinking. Findings, based on interviews and participant observations, revealed that all participants believed that the PST was appropriate and worthwhile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
