The fragmentation of metastable and collisionally activated ions as well as different experimental techniques which can be used to record daughter, parent and neutral loss spectra are discussed in the first part of this review. Advanced MS/MS methods are represented by the Neutralization Reionisation Mass Spectrometry (NRMS) which allows the characterization of neutral species and the angular resolution of the ion beam emerging from a collision cell, lending to Angle Resolved Mass Spectrometry (ARMS). Typical applications of the tandem mass spectrometry are given by the determination of ion structures, the gas phase reactions of ions and the analysis of compounds in complex mixtures.
