CO2 electroreduction is a promising technique for the management of the global carbon balance by low-grade renewable electricity. However, the lack of highly efficient and selective catalysts has hampered the development of this area. Herein, we report a poly-phenylenediamine-derived atomically dispersed Ni catalyst as a highly efficient and selective electrocatalyst for the conversion of CO2 to CO. The catalyst facilitates efficient production of CO with high faradaic efficiency (FE) (90%) and a large current density of 11.6 mA cm−2 at −0.8 V compared to a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). An excellent turnover frequency (TOF) of 3079 h−1 for the electroreduction of CO2 was also achieved at −0.8 V vs. RHE.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising clean energy source to directly convert waste chemicals to available electric power. However, the practical application of MFCs needs the increased power density, enhanced energy conversion efficiency and reduced electrode material cost. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) macroporous N, P and S co-doped carbon foams (NPS-CFs) were prepared by direct pyrolysis of the commercial bread and employed as free-standing anodes in MFCs. As-obtained NPS-CFs have a large specific surface area (295.07 m2 g−1), high N, P and S doping level, and excellent electrical conductivity. A maximum areal power density of 3134 mW m−2 and current density of 7.56 A m−2 are generated by the MFCs equipped with as-obtained NPS-CF anodes, which is 2.57- and 2.63-fold that of the plain carbon cloth anodes (areal power density of 1218 mW m−2 and current density of 2.87 A m−2), respectively. Such improvement is explored to mainly originate from two respects: the good biocompatibility of NPS-CFs favors the bacterial adhesion and enrichment of electroactive Geobacter species on the electrode surface, while the high conductivity and improved bacteria-electrode interaction efficiently promote the extracellular electron transfer (EET) between the bacteria and the anode. This study provides a low-cost and sustainable way to fabricate high power MFCs for practical applications.

Efficient nonprecious-metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts are key for the commercial viability of fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water-splitting systems. Thus, high-performance ORR and OER electrocatalysts in acidic electrolytes are needed to support high-efficiency proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based systems. Herein, we report a new approach to design and prepare an ultrathin N-doped holey carbon layer (HCL) on a graphene sheet that exhibits outstanding bifunctional ORR/OER activities in both alkaline and acidic media. The edge sites of HCL are utilized to achieve selective doping of highly active pyridinic-N. The sandwiched graphene sheet provides mechanical support, stabilizes HCL structure and promotes charge transfer. The synergetic effect of the catalyst structure overcomes the drawbacks of holey graphene approaches. The resulting ORR and OER performances are equal to or better than the top-ranked electrocatalysts.

Rational design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is vital for efficient water splitting owing to the sluggish kinetics of the anodic reaction. In this issue, Wang et al. shed light on an anion-etching approach to accelerate the rapid formation of high active species on surface of the pre-catalysts during OER, yet opening up a whole new avenue to construct high-performance catalysts for electrolyers and other important industrial processes.

Ni– and Co–porphyrin multilayers on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets are reported as novel bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)., Ni– and Co–porphyrin multilayers on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets are reported as novel bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). After binding with organic porphyrin molecules, the catalytically-active Ni2+ and Co2+ ions are periodically constructed onto the rGO surfaces via the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique. The resulting catalysts exhibit good performance towards both OER and ORR, which is achieved with accurate control of the composition and thickness of the multilayer structures. This work highlights the potential for the fabrication of efficient electrocatalysts via molecular design.

Graphene‐based materials have been widely studied to overcome the hurdles of Li–S batteries, but suffer from low adsorptivity to polar polysulfide species, slow mass transport of Li+ ions, and severe irreversible agglomeration. Herein, via a one‐step scalable calcination process, a holey Fe, N codoped graphene (HFeNG) is successfully synthesized to address these problems. Diverging by the holey structures, the Fe atoms are anchored by four N atoms (Fe–N4 moiety) or two N atoms (Fe–N2 moiety) localized on the graphene sheets and edge of holes, respectively, which is confirmed by X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The unique holey structures not only promote the mass transport of lithium ions, but also prohibit the transportation of polysulfides across these additional channels via strong adsorption forces of Fe–N2 moiety at the edges. The as‐obtained HFeNG delivers a high rate capacity of 810 mAh g−1 at 5 C and a stable cycling performance with the capacity decay of 0.083% per cycle at 0.5 C. The concept of holey structure and introduction of polar moieties could be extended to other carbon and 2D nanostructures for energy storage and conversion devices such as supercapacitors, alkali‐ion batteries, metal–air batteries, and metal–halogen batteries.

The inhibitively high cost of the noble‐metal‐containing materials has become a major obstacle for the large‐scale application of rechargeable zinc‐air batteries (ZABs). To solve this problem in a practical way, a green and scalable method to prepare sandwich‐like reduced graphene oxide /carbon black/amorphous cobalt borate nanocomposites (rGO/CB/Co‐Bi) is reported. These composites are shown to be a highly efficient and robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this system, the spontaneous assembly of the GO sheet and CB nanoparticles is demonstrated by noncovalent interactions to build the sandwich‐like structure with hierarchical pore distribution. The impressive ORR and OER activities of the obtained nanocomposite are attributed to the high conductivity, large surface area, and the hierarchically porous channels. With room‐temperature synthesis and significant activities shown in the demonstrative battery test, the prepared nanocomposite can potentially serve as an alternative for noble‐metal‐based rechargeable ZAB cathode materials.
