The different models that predict the distribution of species are a useful tool for the evaluation and monitoring of forest resources as they facilitate the planning of their management in a changing climate environment. Recently, a significant number of algorithms have been proposed for this purpose, making it difficult to select the most appropriate to use. The evaluation of performance and predictive stability of these models can elucidate this problem. Distribution data of 17 pine species with high economic importance for Mexico were collected and distribution models were carried out. We carried out a pre-modeling design to select the prediction variables (climatic, edaphic and topographic), after which nine algorithms and an ensemble model were contrasted against one another. The true skill statistic (TSS) and the area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the predictive performance of the models, and the coefficient of variation of the predictions was used to evaluate their stability. The number of predictive variables in the final models fluctuated from 6 to 12; the mean diurnal range and the maximum temperature of warmest month were included in the models for most species. Information on the occurrence and abundance of the Critically Endangered smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata and largetooth sawfish P. pristis across most of their former range is needed for a comprehensive global conservation status assessment. The current presence of both species in Mexico and the rest of Latin America remains uncertain in the absence of dedicated studies. During 2015, we performed the first nationwide study of sawfishes in Mexico. We developed specific materials to survey fishers, raise community awareness, and publicize sawfish conservation needs. We interviewed 794 fishers in 71 localities along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico. Additional data from a similar 2010-2011 survey of 39 fishers in Tabasco and Campeche were also included in the analysis. Both species might be nearly extirpated from Mexico. Interviewees reported modal decadal dates of last sighting as the 1980s for the smalltooth sawfish along the Atlantic coast and as the 1970s for the largetooth sawfish along both coasts. Rationale: Although the mesocorticolimbic dopamine (DA) system is the main neurochemical substrate that regulates the addictive and reinforcing effects of ethanol (EtOH), other neurotransmitter systems, such as the acetylcholine (Ach) system, modulate DAergic function in the nucleus accumbens (nAcc). Previously, we reported that intra-nAcc administration of the nicotinic Ach receptor agonist cytisine increased oral EtOH self-administration. GABAB receptors in the nAcc are expressed in DAergic terminals, inhibit the regulation of DA release into the nAcc, and could modulate the effects of cytisine on oral EtOH self-administration. The present study assessed the effects of intra-nAcc administration of the GABAB receptor agonist baclofen (BCF) on the impacts of cytisine on oral EtOH self-administration., Methods: Male Wistar rats were deprived of water for 23.30 h and then trained to press a lever to receive EtOH on an FR3 schedule until a stable response rate of 80 % was achieved. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) and many other wetland plants form an apoplastic barrier in the outer parts of the roots to restrict radial O2 loss to the rhizosphere during soil flooding. This barrier facilitates longitudinal internal O2 diffusion via gas-filled tissues from shoot to root apices, enabling root growth in anoxic soils. We tested the hypothesis that Leaf Gas Film 1 (LGF1), which influences leaf hydrophobicity in rice, plays a crucial role in tight outer apoplastic barriers formation in rice roots. We examined the roots of a rice mutant (dripping wet leaf 7, drp7) lacking functional LGF1, its wild type, and an LGF1 overexpression line for their capacity to develop outer apoplastic barriers that restrict radial O2 loss. We quantified the chemical composition of the outer part of the root and measured radial O2 diffusion from intact roots. The drp7 mutant exhibited a weak barrier to radial O2 loss compared to the wild type. However, introducing functional LGF1 into the mutant fully restored tight barrier function. The formation of a tight barrier to radial O2 loss was associated with increased glycerol ester levels in exodermal cells, rather than differences in total root suberization or lignification. These results demonstrate that, in addition to its role in leaf hydrophobicity regulation, LGF1 plays an important role in controlling the function of the outer apoplastic barriers in roots. This study assessed whether a sample of 43 children in Puebla, Mexico would show the Fading Affect Bias (FAB) for memories of the death of loved ones or pets and for general negative memories. FAB is a phenomenon in which emotional intensity associated with unpleasant memories fades faster than affect in pleasant memories. Mexican children showed FAB across negative and death memories. Younger children showed lower fading for general negative memories when compared to older children. A second aim of this work assessed whether younger (ages 4.83-9) and older (ages 10-13) children in Mexico would show biological and spiritual understanding of death, and findings indicated that Mexican children's understanding included both biological and spiritual subcomponents. Younger children showed lower comprehension of the death subcomponents Inevitability and Irreversibility. As the Earth warms, alternatives to traditional farming are crucial. Exploring fungi, especially poly extremophilic and extremotolerant species, to be used as plant probiotics, represents a promising option. Extremophilic fungi offer avenues for developing and producing innovative biofertilizers, effective biocontrol agents against plant pathogens, and resilient enzymes active under extreme conditions, all of which are crucial to enhance agricultural efficiency and sustainability through improved soil fertility and decreased reliance on agrochemicals. Yet, extremophilic fungi's potential remains underexplored and, therefore, comprehensive research is needed to understand their roles as tools to foster sustainable agriculture practices amid climate change. Efforts should concentrate on unraveling the complex dynamics of plant-fungi interactions and harnessing extremophilic fungi's ecological functions to influence plant growth and development. Aspects such as plant's epigenome remodeling, fungal extracellular vesicle production, secondary metabolism regulation, and impact on native soil microbiota are among many deserving to be explored in depth. Caution is advised, however, as extremophilic and extremotolerant fungi can act as both mitigators of crop diseases and as opportunistic pathogens, underscoring the necessity for balanced research to optimize benefits while mitigating risks in agricultural settings., (© 2024. In recent years, research on flooding stress and hypoxic responses in plants has gathered increasing attention due to climate change and the important role of O2 in metabolism and signalling. This Collection of Functional Plant Biology on 'Flooding stress and responses to hypoxia in plants' presents key contributions aimed at progressing our current understanding on how plants respond to low-O2 conditions, flooding stress and a combination of stresses commonly found in flooded areas. The Collection emphasises the characterisation of diverse plant responses across different developmental stages, from seed germination to fully developed plants, and under different water stress conditions ranging from waterlogging to complete submergence, or simply low-O2 conditions resulting from limited O2 diffusivity in bulky tissues. Additionally, this Collection highlights diverse approaches, including eco-physiological characterisation of plant responses, detailed descriptions of root anatomical characteristics and their surrounding microenvironments, evaluation of the seed microbiota under flooding stress, the modification of gene expression, and evaluations of diverse germplasm collections.

Ovine anaplasmosis is an emerging vector-borne disease in Europe caused by Anaplasma ovis. The infection has spread quickly in recent years, causing moderate to severe outbreaks in sheep flocks, leading to relevant economic losses in sheep farming. This wider spread has been associated with global warming and climate change, favouring the maintenance and life cycle of their main vector, the ticks. However, another epidemiological aspect could favour this quick spread. Long persistence infection of Anaplasma ovis has been proposed as a hypothesis in several articles but never scientifically proven. The results of the present study demonstrate that eight adult sheep, both naturally or experimentally infected, maintain Anaplasma ovis load in blood during their whole productive life (4 to 6 years), being permanently infected. In addition, the results suggest that A. ovis bacterial load can be constant or suffer fluctuations, as has been demonstrated in other Anaplasma species. Floods and droughts are becoming more frequent as a result of climate change and it is imperative to find ways to enhance the resilience of staple crops to abiotic stresses. This is crucial to sustain food production during unfavourable conditions. Here, we analyse the current knowledge about suberised and lignified outer apoplastic barriers, focusing on the functional roles of the barrier to radial O2 loss formed as a response to soil flooding and we discuss whether this trait also provides resilience to multiple abiotic stresses. The barrier is composed of suberin and lignin depositions in the exodermal and/or sclerenchyma cell walls. In addition to the important role during soil flooding, the barrier can also restrict radial water loss, prevent phytotoxin intrusion, salt intrusion and the main components of the barrier can impede invasion of pathogens in the root. However, more research is needed to fully unravel the induction pathway of the outer apoplastic barriers and to address potential trade-offs such as reduced nutrient or water uptake. Nevertheless, we suggest that the outer apoplastic barriers might act as a jack of all trades providing tolerance to multiple abiotic and/or biotic stressors.

Rice production worldwide represents a major anthropogenic source of greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen fertilization and irrigation practices have been fundamental to achieve optimal rice yields, but these agricultural practices together with by-products from plants and microorganisms, facilitate the production, accumulation and venting of vast amounts of CO 2 , CH 4 and N 2 O. We propose that the development of elite rice varieties should target root traits enabling an effective internal O 2 diffusion, via enlarged aerenchyma channels. Moreover, gas tight barriers impeding radial O 2 loss in basal parts of the roots will increase O 2 diffusion to the root apex where molecular O 2 diffuses into the rhizosphere. These developments result in plants with roots penetrating deeper into the flooded anoxic soils, producing higher volumes of oxic conditions in the interface between roots and rhizosphere. Molecular O 2 in these zones promotes CH 4 oxidation into CO 2 by methanotrophs and nitrification (conversion of NH 4 + into NO 3 - ), reducing greenhouse gas production and at the same time improving plant nutrition. Moreover, roots with tight barriers to radial O 2 loss will have restricted diffusional entry of CH 4 produced in the anoxic parts of the rhizosphere and therefore plant-mediated diffusion will be reduced. Limited aeration that is caused by tissue geometry, diffusion barriers, high elevation, or a flooding event poses major challenges to plants and is often, but not exclusively, associated with low oxygen. These processes span a broad interest in the research community ranging from whole plant and crop responses, post-harvest physiology, plant morphology and anatomy, fermentative metabolism, plant developmental processes, oxygen sensing by ERF-VIIs, gene expression profiles, the gaseous hormone ethylene, and O 2 dynamics at cellular resolution. The International Society for Plant Anaerobiosis (ISPA) gathers researchers from all over the world contributing to understand the causes, responses, and consequences of limited aeration in plants. During the 14th ISPA meeting, major research progress was related to the evolution of O 2 sensing mechanisms and the intricate network that balances low O2 signaling. Here, the work moved beyond flooding stress and emphasized novel underexplored roles of low O2 and limited aeration in altitude adaptation, fruit development and storage, and the vegetative development of growth apices. Regarding tolerance towards flooding, the meeting stressed the relevance and regulation of developmental plasticity, aerenchyma, and barrier formation to improve internal aeration. Additional newly explored flood tolerance traits concerned resource balance, senescence, and the exploration of natural genetic variation for novel tolerance loci. Sharks and rays are key functional components of coral reef ecosystems, yet many populations of a few species exhibit signs of depletion and local extinctions. The question is whether these declines forewarn of a global extinction crisis. We use IUCN Red List to quantify the status, trajectory, and threats to all coral reef sharks and rays worldwide. Here, we show that nearly two-thirds (59%) of the 134 coral-reef associated shark and ray species are threatened with extinction. Alongside marine mammals, sharks and rays are among the most threatened groups found on coral reefs. Overfishing is the main cause of elevated extinction risk, compounded by climate change and habitat degradation. Risk is greatest for species that are larger-bodied (less resilient and higher trophic level), widely distributed across several national jurisdictions (subject to a patchwork of management), and in nations with greater fishing pressure and weaker governance. Population declines have occurred over more than half a century, with greatest declines prior to 2005. Immediate action through local protections, combined with broad-scale fisheries management and Marine Protected Areas, is required to avoid extinctions and the loss of critical ecosystem function condemning reefs to a loss of shark and ray biodiversity and ecosystem services, limiting livelihoods and food security., (© 2023. Background: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, autoimmune, degenerative disease. Therapies targeting B-cells have been shown to be effective in its treatment; however, there are few studies evaluating their efficacy in the Mexican population., Objective: To evaluate the clinical impact of rituximab in patients with newly-diagnosed relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS)., Material and Methods: Real life, descriptive study, in which rituximab was evaluated as treatment for RRMS over a 24-month period. Pre- and post-treatment clinical variables were analyzed; a comparison was made between treatment-naïve and non-treatment-naïve patients., Results: Twenty-eight patients with RRMS were included. Mean age at diagnosis was 30.7 years, and 22 patients were treatment-naïve (78.5 %). After 24 months, there was a mean reduction of 1.8 points in the EDSS scale and a decrease in the number of active lesions on magnetic resonance imaging; a significant difference in both variables could be established (p < 0.05). However, the logistic regression model did not show a relationship between the variables for achieving NEDA-3 criteria. The thermal stability of newborns is an essential parameter that can be recorded to evaluate neonatal care. Knowing the thermal windows to evaluate and maintain a constant temperature helps significantly reduce neonatal mortality. This study aimed to assess the superficial temperature alterations in the distinct thermal windows of puppies with mothers of diverse weights and their repercussions. We evaluated the superficial temperature using infrared thermography at eight thermal windows and seven different times: when wet due to the fetal fluid immediately after birth until 24 h of life in newborn puppies from bitches divided into four bodyweight groups. The results revealed a positive correlation between the dam's weight and the ability to achieve thermostability in the newborn puppies in all the evaluated thermal windows. The time effect showed the lowest temperatures when the puppies were still wet, a gradual increase, and the highest temperature at 24 h after birth. The thermal windows with the highest temperatures were abdominal, thoracic, nasal, and upper left palpebral, and those with the lowest were the thoracic limb brachial biceps, thoracic limb elbow, metacarpal, and femoral pelvic limb. A significant increase in the temperatures in the thermal windows of the abdominal, thoracic, and upper left palpebral immediately after ingesting colostrum was observed. The weight of the dams is an important factor that positively intervenes in the thermoregulatory capacity of the puppies, especially when newborns are dry and have been passed 24 h after birth.

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods are transforming our capacity to detect pathogens and perform disease diagnosis. Although sequencing advances have enabled accessible and point-of-care HTS, data analysis pipelines have yet to provide robust tools for precise and certain diagnosis, particularly in cases of low sequencing coverage. Lack of standardized metrics and harmonized detection thresholds confound the problem further, impeding the adoption and implementation of these solutions in real-world applications. In this work, we tackle these issues and propose biologically-informed viral genome assembly coverage as a method to improve diagnostic certainty. We use the identification of viral replicases, an essential function of viral life cycles, to define genome coverage thresholds in which biological functions can be described. We validate the analysis pipeline, Viroscope, using field samples, synthetic and published datasets, and demonstrate that it provides sensitive and specific viral detection. Background: The modification of glucose import capacity is an engineering strategy that has been shown to improve the characteristics of Escherichia coli as a microbial factory. A reduction in glucose import capacity can have a positive effect on production strain performance, however, this is not always the case. In this study, E. coli W3110 and a group of four isogenic derivative strains, harboring single or multiple deletions of genes encoding phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS)-dependent transporters as well as non-PTS transporters were characterized by determining their transcriptomic response to reduced glucose import capacity., Results: These strains were grown in bioreactors with M9 mineral salts medium containing 20 g/L of glucose, where they displayed specific growth rates ranging from 0.67 to 0.27 h -1 , and specific glucose consumption rates (qs) ranging from 1.78 to 0.37 g/g h. RNA-seq analysis revealed a transcriptional response consistent with carbon source limitation among all the mutant strains, involving functions related to transport and metabolism of alternate carbon sources and characterized by a decrease in genes encoding glycolytic enzymes and an increase in gluconeogenic functions. A total of 107 and 185 genes displayed positive and negative correlations with qs, respectively. Functions displaying positive correlation included energy generation, amino acid biosynthesis, and sugar import., Conclusion: Changes in gene expression of E. coli strains with impaired glucose import capacity could be correlated with qs values and this allowed an inference of the physiological state of each mutant. In strains with lower qs values, a gene expression pattern is consistent with energy limitation and entry into the stationary phase. This physiological state could explain why these strains display a lower capacity to produce recombinant protein, even when they show very low rates of acetate production. The aromatic compound p-coumaric acid (p-CA) is a secondary metabolite produced by plants. This aromatic acid and derived compounds have positive effects on human health, so there is interest in producing them in biotechnological processes with recombinant Escherichia coli strains. To determine the physiologic response of E. coli W3110 to p-CA, dynamic expression analysis of selected genes fused to a fluorescent protein reporter as well as RNA-seq and RT-qPCR were performed. The observed transcriptional profile revealed the induction of genes involved in functions related to p-CA active export, synthesis of cell wall and membrane components, synthesis of amino acids, detoxification of formaldehyde, phosphate limitation, acid stress, protein folding and degradation. Downregulation of genes encoding proteins involved in energy production, carbohydrate import and metabolism, as well as several outer and plasma membrane proteins was detected. This response is indicative of cell envelope damage causing the leakage of intracellular components including amino acids and phosphate-containing compounds. Multiple paternity (MP) in the brown smooth-hound shark (Mustelus henlei) was assessed in 15 litters (15 mothers and 97 embryos) collected in the northern Gulf of California of which 86.7% were sired by more than one male (i.e., from 2 to 4 sires). When taken together with results from previous studies, this record indicates that there is regional variation in MP in M. henlei in the northeastern Pacific. This pattern is associated with variations in the reproductive traits of each population (e.g., female size and litter size). In this work it is proposed a modeling for operating room times based on a Bayesian Hierarchical structure. Specifically, it is employed a Bayesian generalized linear mixed model with an additional hierarchical level on the random effects. This configuration allows the estimation of operating room times (ORT) with few or no historical observations, without requiring a prior surgeon's estimate. In addition to the widely used lognormal distribution, it is also studied the gamma distribution to model the operating room times. For the scale parameters related to the random effects (surgeon and surgical group), which are important quantities in this type of modeling, different kinds of prior distributions such as Half-Cauchy, Sbeta2, and uniform are studied. A Bayesian version of the classical ANOVA is implemented to identify relevant predictors for the operating room times. We find that lognormal models outperform the gamma models in estimating upper prediction bounds (UB). Especially, the best ORT predictions for cases with few or no historical data (i.e., between 0 and 3 historical cases) are obtained with the [Formula: see text], SBeta2 model. (1) Background: a set of ergonomic parameters that are relevant for risk assessment methods for the prevention of occupational risks, such as REBA or NIOSH, have been measured by means of inertial sensors that allow capturing the movements of the human body. These methods base their assessment on a number of postural and dynamic parameters. In the case of police physical intervention techniques, trunk, legs, arms, forearms and wrists angles, joint contact force and sheer force at the L5-Pelvic junction, asymmetry (angle and factor), and muscle power are the more relevant parameters to be considered. (2) Method: The data have been collected by means of a motion capture suit equipped with 19 inertial sensors. The large amount of data and the 3-dimensional plots have been managed by a powerful software package specific for ergonomic analysis. The police physical intervention technique used was OTP. (3) Results: Five ergonomic parameters in a traditional police physical intervention technique have been analyzed. REBA scores and ergonomic metrics have been recorded and discussed with some prevention risk limits from the literature. (4) Conclusions: the usage of inertial sensors to capture the movements in OTPs provides a new and quite an efficient viewpoint for occupational risk research studies.

The path to sustainable small-scale fisheries (SSF) is based on multiple learning processes that must transcend generational changes. To understand young leaders from communities with sustainable SSF management practices in Mexico, we used in-depth interviews to identify their shared motivations and perceptions for accepting their fishing heritage. These possible future decision-makers act as agents of change due to their organizational and technological abilities. However, young people are currently at a crossroads. Many inherited a passion for the sea and want to improve and diversify the fishing sector, yet young leaders do not want to accept a legacy of complicated socioenvironmental conditions that can limit their futures. These future leaders are especially concerned by the uncertainty caused by climate change. If fishing and generational change are not valued in planning processes, the continuity of fisheries, the success of conservation actions, and the lifestyles of young fishers will remain uncertain., (© 2021. Background and Objectives: An association between high red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and mortality has been found in several diseases, including infection and sepsis. Some studies have aimed at determining the association of elevated RDW with adverse prognosis in COVID-19, but its usefulness has not been well established. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of the RDW, measured at hospital admission and discharge, for predicting death in patients with COVID-19. Materials andMethods: An observational, retrospective, longitudinal, and analytical study was conducted in two different COVID-19 reference centers in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. A total of 323 patients hospitalized by COVID-19 were included. Results: We found higher RDW levels at the time of hospital admission in the non-survivors group compared to levels in survivors (median = 13.6 vs. 13.0, p < 0.001). Final RDW levels were even higher in the deceased group when compared with those of survivors (median = 14.6 [IQR, 12.67−15.6] vs. 12.9 [IQR, 12.2−13.5], p < 0.001). For patients who died, an RDW > 14.5% was more common at the time of death than for patients who survived at the time of discharge (81 vs. 13 patients, p < 0.001; RR = 2.3, 95% CI 1.89−2.81). Conclusions: The RDW is an accessible and economical parameter that, together with other characteristics of the presentation and evolution of patients with COVID-19, can be helpful in determining the prognosis. An RDW that increases during hospitalization could be a more important mortality predictor than the RDW at hospital admission.

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM)-1 is a potent and early amplifier of the inflammatory response expressed on neutrophils and monocytes/macrophages. TREM-1, and its soluble form (sTREM-1), are increased in sepsis and other noninfectious inflammatory conditions. However, virtually no data are available in kidney disease. To determine serum sTREM-1 and its associated variables in patients on hemodialysis (HD), cross-sectional study including 264 HD patients and 148 controls. sTREM-1 was measured by quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay; soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (sTNF-R1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were also measured. All inflammation markers were significantly higher in HD patients than controls. Median (IQR) sTREM-1 was 1,006 (613-1,650) pg/mL but undetectable in controls. Considering only HD patients, sTREM-1 was positively correlated with IL-6 (r = 0.19, p = 0.008), and its levels were significantly higher in patients with arteriovenous fistula than in those with temporary catheter (1,226 vs. 743 pg/mL), in patients with 3 HD sessions/week than in those with 2 sessions/week (1,150 vs. 646 pg/mL), and in patients with >1 year on HD than in those with ≤1 year (1,100 vs. 948 pg/mL), whereas they were not different regarding age or presence of infection. Serum sTREM-1, sTNF-R1, IL-6, and CRP were higher in HD patients compared to controls. Background: Viscoelastic tests (rotational thromboelastometry, ROTEM ® ), together with the implementation of a specific algorithm for coagulation management in cardiac surgery, enable perioperative coagulopathy to be better controlled., Methods: Retrospective cohort study including 675 patients who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. The incidence of allogeneic blood transfusions and clinical postoperative complications were analyzed before and after ROTEM ® implementation., Results: Following viscoelastic testing and the implementation of a specific algorithm for coagulation management, the incidence of any allogeneic blood transfusion decreased (41.4% vs 31.9%, p  = .026) during the perioperative period. In the group monitored with ROTEM ® , decreased incidence of transfusion was observed for packed red blood cells (31.3% vs 19.8%, p  = .002), fresh frozen plasma (9.8% vs 3.8%, p  = .008), prothrombin complex concentrate administration (0.9% vs 0.3%, p  = .599) and activated recombinant factor VII (0.3% vs 0.0%, p  = .603). Increased incidence was observed for platelet transfusion (4.8% vs 6.8%, p  = .530) and fibrinogen concentrate (0.9% vs 3.5%, p  = .066), tranexamic acid (0.0% vs 0.6%, p  = .370) and protamine administration (0.6% vs 0.9%, p  = .908). Similar results were observed in the postoperative period, but with a decreased incidence of platelet transfusion (4.8% vs 3.8%, p  = .813). In addition, statistically significant reductions were detected in the incidence of postoperative bleeding (9.5% vs 5.3%, p  = .037), surgical reexploration (6.0% vs 2.9%, p  = .035), and length of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay (6.0 days vs 5.3 days, p  = .026)., Conclusions: The monitoring of hemostasis by ROTEM ® in cardiac surgery, was associated with decreased incidence of allogeneic blood transfusion, clinical hematologic postoperative complications and lengths of ICU stay.

According to the Pavlovian conditioning model, drug tolerance is modulated by drug-associated environmental cues. This study evaluated the contribution of drug-associated cues in the development of cross-tolerance to the tachycardic effects of nicotine from tobacco and alcohol in human subjects. Forty undergraduate students were recruited for this experiment, and each student was randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions. Twenty students smoked nicotine-containing cigarettes in context A and placebo cigarettes in context B, and twenty students smoked nicotine-containing cigarettes in context B and placebo cigarettes in context A. A cross-tolerance test was carried out by dividing the subjects in each condition into two subgroups (n = 10). Each subgroup consumed alcohol in both contexts (A and B). The results of this experiment showed that cross-tolerance between nicotine and alcohol was exhibited only if the cross-tolerance test was carried out in the same context where tolerance had developed to the nicotine from tobacco. These results support the hypothesis that drug-associated environmental stimuli play a modulatory role in the development of cross-tolerance between nicotine from tobacco and alcohol.

Recognizing the imperative to evaluate species recovery and conservation impact, in 2012 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) called for development of a "Green List of Species" (now the IUCN Green Status of Species). A draft Green Status framework for assessing species' progress toward recovery, published in 2018, proposed 2 separate but interlinked components: a standardized method (i.e., measurement against benchmarks of species' viability, functionality, and preimpact distribution) to determine current species recovery status (herein species recovery score) and application of that method to estimate past and potential future impacts of conservation based on 4 metrics (conservation legacy, conservation dependence, conservation gain, and recovery potential). We tested the framework with 181 species representing diverse taxa, life histories, biomes, and IUCN Red List categories (extinction risk). Based on the observed distribution of species' recovery scores, we propose the following species recovery categories: fully recovered, slightly depleted, moderately depleted, largely depleted, critically depleted, extinct in the wild, and indeterminate. Fifty-nine percent of tested species were considered largely or critically depleted. Although there was a negative relationship between extinction risk and species recovery score, variation was considerable. Some species in lower risk categories were assessed as farther from recovery than those at higher risk. This emphasizes that species recovery is conceptually different from extinction risk and reinforces the utility of the IUCN Green Status of Species to more fully understand species conservation status. Although extinction risk did not predict conservation legacy, conservation dependence, or conservation gain, it was positively correlated with recovery potential. Only 1.7% of tested species were categorized as zero across all 4 of these conservation impact metrics, indicating that conservation has, or will, play a role in improving or maintaining species status for the vast majority of these species. Based on our results, we devised an updated assessment framework that introduces the option of using a dynamic baseline to assess future impacts of conservation over the short term to avoid misleading results which were generated in a small number of cases, and redefines short term as 10 years to better align with conservation planning. Background: Isolated limb perfusion (ILP) is a locoregional procedure indicated by the unresectable melanoma of the limbs. Its complexity and highly demanding multidisciplinary approach means that it is a technique only implemented in a few referral centers around the globe. This report aims to examine its potential role in the era of targeted therapies and immunotherapy by conducting a systematic review of the literature on ILP., Methods: PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library were searched. The eligibility criteria included publications from 2000-2020 providing valid data o effectiveness, survival or toxicity. Studies in which the perfusion methodology was not clearly described, letters to the editor, non-systematic reviews and studies that applied outdated clinical guidelines were excluded. To rule out studies of a low methodological quality and assess the risk of bias, the following aspects were also required: a detailed description of the applied ILP regimen, the clinical context, follow-up periods, analyzed clinical endpoints, and the number of analyzed ILPs. The disagreements were resolved by consensus. The results are presented in tables and figures., Results: Twenty-seven studies including 2637 ILPs were selected. The median overall response rate was 85%, with a median complete response rate of 58.5%. The median overall survival was 38 months, with a 5-year overall survival of 35%. The toxicity was generally mild according to Wieberdink toxicity criteria., Discussion: ILP still offer a high efficacy in selected patients. The main limitation of our review is the heterogeneity and age of most of the articles, as well as the absence of clinical trials comparing ILP with other procedures, making it difficult to transfer its results to the current era., Conclusions: ILP is still an effective and safe procedure for selected patients with unresectable melanoma of the limbs. In the era of targeted therapies and immunotherapy, ILP remains an acceptable and reasonable palliative treatment alternative, especially to avoid limb amputations. The ongoing clinical trials combining systemic therapies and ILP will provide more valuable information in the future to clarify the potential synergism of both strategies.

In flooded soils, an efficient internal aeration system is essential for root growth and plant survival. Roots of many wetland species form barriers to restrict radial O 2 loss (ROL) to the rhizosphere. The formation of such barriers greatly enhances longitudinal O 2 diffusion from basal parts towards the root tip, and the barrier also impedes the entry of phytotoxic compounds produced in flooded soils into the root. Nevertheless, ROL from roots is an important source of O 2 for rhizosphere oxygenation and the oxidation of toxic compounds. In this paper, we review the methodological aspects for the most widely used techniques for the qualitative visualization and quantitative determination of ROL from roots. Detailed methodological approaches, practical set-ups and examples of ROL from roots with or without barriers to ROL are included. This paper provides practical knowledge relevant to several disciplines, including plant-soil interactions, biogeochemistry and eco-physiological aspects of roots and soil biota.

Senescence is an important trait in maize ( Zea mais L.), a key crop that provides nutrition values and a renewable source of bioenergy worldwide. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) can be used to identify causative genetic variants that influence the major physiological measures of senescence, which is used by plants as a defense mechanism against abiotic and biotic stresses affecting its performance. We measured four physiological and two agronomic traits that affect senescence. Six hundred seventy-two recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were evaluated in two consecutive years. Thirty-six candidate genes were identified by genome-wide association study (GWAS), and 11 of them were supported by additional evidence for involvement in senescence-related processes including proteolysis, sugar transport, and sink activity. We identified a candidate gene, Zm00001d043586, significantly associated with chlorophyll, and independently studied its transcription expression in an independent panel. Our results showed that Zm00001d043586 affects chlorophyl rate degradation, a key determinant of senescence, at late plant development stages. We report for the first time a highly divergent lineage in the Caribbean Sea for the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) based on the analysis of 51 mitochondrial DNA genomes of individuals collected in the western North Atlantic. When comparing the mtDNA control region obtained from the mitogenomes to sequences reported previously for Brazil, the Caribbean lineage remained highly divergent. Background: Anxiety and depression symptoms are known to increase cancer symptom burden, yet little is known about the longitudinal integrations of these among Hispanic/Latinx patients. The goal of this study was to explore the trajectory and longitudinal interactions among anxiety and depression, cancer symptom burden, and health-related quality of life in Hispanic/Latinx cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy., Methods: Baseline behavioral assessments were performed before starting chemotherapy. Follow-up behavioral assessments were performed at 3, 6, and 9 months after starting chemotherapy. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and Mann-Whitney tests explored associations among outcome variables. Adjusted multilevel mixed-effects linear regression models were also used to evaluate the association between HADS scores, follow-up visits, FACT-G scale, MDASI scale, and sociodemographic variables., Results: Increased cancer symptom burden was significantly related to changes in anxiety symptoms' scores (adjusted β^ = 0.11 [95% CI: 0.02, 0.19]. Increased quality of life was significantly associated with decreased depression and anxiety symptoms (adjusted β^ = -0.33; 95% CI: -0.47, -0.18, and 0.38 adjusted β^= -0.38; 95% CI: -0.55, -0.20, respectively)., Conclusions: Findings highlight the need to conduct periodic mental health screenings among cancer patients initiating cancer treatment.

Lack of O2 and high concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) commonly occur in waterlogged soils. The development of a barrier to impede radial O2 loss (ROL) is a key trait improving internal O2 transport and waterlogging tolerance in plants. We evaluated the ability of the barrier to ROL to impede the entry of excess Fe into the roots of the waterlogging-tolerant grass Urochloa humidicola. Plants were grown in aerated or stagnant deoxygenated nutrient solution with 5 µM or 900 µM Fe. Quantitative X-ray microanalysis was used to determine cell-specific Fe concentrations at two positions behind the root apex in relation to ROL and the formation of apoplastic barriers. At a mature zone of the root, Fe was 'excluded' at the exodermis where a suberized lamella was evident, a feature also associated with a strong barrier to ROL. In contrast, the potassium (K) concentration was similar in all root cells, indicating that K uptake was not affected by apoplastic barriers. The hypothesis that the formation of a tight barrier to ROL impedes the apoplastic entry of toxic concentrations of Fe into the mature zones of roots was supported by the significantly higher accumulation of Fe on the outer side of the exodermis., (© The Author(s) 2021. HIV infects its target cell and integrates into its genome as an essential step in its replication cycle. Proviral DNA is also subjected to the same transcriptional regulation as the host cell genome by its own transcriptional factors, with activating or repressive activity. There is a clear interaction between the presence of transcriptional repressors and a decrease in the rate of HIV replication, promoting gene silencing in infected cells, which serve as viral reservoirs. This represents a major obstacle for HIV eradication. The ZBTB gene family comprises 49 genes that encode transcription factors that have a repressor function in differentiation and development of cells of the lymphopoietic lineage, including the main target cells of HIV, CD4 + T cells. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the expression profile of ZBTB genes in CD4 + T cells of HIV-positive individuals with different levels of infection control. We found upregulation of gene expression of ZBTB4 (p < 0.01), ZBTB7B (p < 0.001), and ZBTB38 (p < 0.05) and downregulation of ZBTB16 (p < 0.01) in HIV-positive patients compared to HIV-negative individuals. Interestingly, in a deeper analysis, we observed that elite controllers had the highest levels of expression of the ZBTB38, ZBTB2, HIC1, ZBTB7A, ZBTB7B (ThPOK) and ZBTB4 genes, showing 2.56- to 7.60-fold upregulation compare to the ART-naïve group. These results suggest a possible contribution of these ZBTB transcriptional repressors in HIV-positive patients and a possible new molecular mechanism of viral control.

Background: HIV infection is characterized by CD4 + T-cells depletion related to gut damage, microbial translocation, immune activation and intestinal and systemic low-grade inflammation. With the use of antiretroviral treatment, these alterations in HIV+ patients reach similar levels to HIV- controls. However, almost 20% patients have deficient immune reconstitution of CD4 + T-cells, which make them more susceptible to develop non-AIDS and AIDS comorbidities., Methods: HIV+ patients on ART, with sustained virologic control were grouped according to their immune reconstitution as: immunological responders ( n  = 18) and immunological non-responders ( n  = 18); also, HIV- controls were enrolled ( n  = 14). CD4 + and CD8 + T-cell activation (HLA-DR + and CD38 + single and co-expression) were measured by flow cytometry. Serum levels of sCD14, sCD163, lipopolysaccharide, I-FABP, sST2, as well as fecal levels of calprotectin, lactoferrin and secretory IgA were evaluated by ELISA. Levels of C-reactive protein were determined by a high sensibility singleplex bead-based immunoassay. Serum and fecal concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines were quantified by multiplex bead-based immunoassay., Results: HLA-DR + and CD38 + co-expression, as well as median fluorescence intensity in CD4 + and CD8 + T-cells subpopulations was greater in immunological non-responders group, after normalization and fold change calculation. Similarly, this group presented higher levels of sCD14, C-reactive protein, as well as fecal calprotectin and lactoferrin. Furthermore, both HIV+ groups showed elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines in stool., Conclusions: Our data suggests that despite the virologic control, HIV+ patients under treatment with deficient immune reconstitution showed elevation of both innate and T-cells immune activation, as well as intestinal and systemic inflammation. However, some patients with CD4 + T-cells count above 350 cells/μL also presented these alterations. Since the 1980s, there has been growing concern in the Mexican Atlantic regarding high catches of neonate and juvenile sharks in small-scale fisheries. Fishery-dependent data from 1993 to 1994 and 2007 to 2017 and fishers' ecological knowledge from 2017 were used to identify nursery areas for scalloped hammerhead, Sphyrna lewini, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Catch records and fishing areas of neonates, YOYs, juveniles and adults of S. lewini (N = 1885) were obtained from calcareous and terrigenous regions in the western Yucatan Peninsula. The results suggest that a nursery for scalloped hammerhead is found in the terrigenous region, characterized by relatively shallow and turbid waters due to rivers' discharges. Neonates and YOYs (96% and 86% of their total records, respectively) were commonly found there over the years in May-August in multiple fishing areas identified by fishers, although mainly between isobaths 10-30 m. In the southern Gulf of Mexico, the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, is one of the most frequently captured species in landings of small-scale fisheries. Based on the analysis of two fishery-dependent sampling periods (1993-1994 and 2007-2014), this study aimed to determine reproductive parameters and identify temporal differences between the two time periods. In the first sampling period, 776 males and 352 females with a size range of 28.0-120.0 cm total stretched length (L T ) were analysed, and in the second sampling period, 387 males and 432 females with a size range of 28.0-122.0 cm L T were analysed. The size at 50% maturity in the second sampling period was significantly different between sexes, 82.6 cm L T for females and 73.8 cm L T for males (no estimation was possible for the first sampling period). The size at 50% maternity was not different between sampling periods, 97.3 cm L T for the first sampling period and 99.0 cm L T for the second sampling period. Litter size varied from 3 to 19 embryos and the average was not statistically different in both periods, 10.1 (S.D. = 3.8) for the first sampling period and 11.3 (S.D. = 3.5) for the second sampling period. The female reproductive cycle is asynchronous, and it seems to be annual, with a gestation period of 5-6 months, and a consecutive ovarian cycle and gestation period. Temporal (between sampling periods) and latitudinal (southern Gulf versus northern regions) variations occur in the synchronicity of the reproductive cycle, temporal variation in the relationship between maternal length and litter size, and latitudinal variation in average size of mature sharks., (© 2020 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.)

Several studies have reported that low doses of the 5-HT 1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT reduce cocaine-induced locomotor activity. However, it has also been reported that high doses of 8-OH-DPAT do not substitute for or alter the discriminative signal of cocaine (COC) or amphetamine (AMPH). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low and high doses of the 5-HT 1A agonist 8-OH-DPAT on the discriminative signal of AMPH using conditioned taste aversion as a drug discrimination procedure. Additionally, to establish a correlation between the behavioral effects in drug discrimination and changes in dopamine (DA) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations, we evaluated the effect of systemic administration of low or high doses of the 5-HT 1A receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT and of the 5-HT 1A receptor antagonist WAY100135 on DA and GABA extracellular concentrations in the nucleus accumbens (nAcc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA), respectively, using cerebral microdialysis. The behavioral results showed that low but not high doses of 8-OH-DPAT produced a reduction in the AMPH-induced discriminative signal, while WAY100135 administration prevented such effects. The microdialysis results showed that a low dose of 8-OH-DPAT decreased extracellular DA concentrations in the nAcc and increased GABA concentrations in the VTA. Pretreatment with WAY100135 prevented these effects. These data support the hypothesis that 5-HT 1A receptors modulate the behavioral effects of psychostimulant drugs, such as AMPH, through somatodendritic 5-HT 1A autoreceptors in the raphe nucleus indicating that 5-HT 1A receptors may be an important target for the development of pharmacological treatments for psychostimulant addiction., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interaction between diet quality and interleukin (IL)-6 genotypes and its association with metabolic and renal function parameters in Mexican patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Design and Methods: Using an analytical cross-sectional design, 219 patients with T2DM (92 men; age 62 ± 10 years) were evaluated for selected metabolic and renal function parameters. Diet quality according to the Healthy Eating Index was evaluated and classified as good diet or poor diet in all patients. IL-6 serum concentrations and genotypes and haplotypes for IL6-597G > A (rs180097), -572G > C (rs180096), and -174G > C (rs180095) polymorphisms were determined., Results: Eighty-two percent of patients reported having a poor diet. Carriers of alleles -572C and -174C showed higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (44 ± 12 vs. 40 ± 9 mg/dL; P = .01) and lower total cholesterol levels (184 ± 33 vs. 197 ± 42 mg/dL; P = .03) than did those homozygous for G/G. Neither IL6 genotypes nor haplotypes were significantly associated with serum concentrations of IL-6. Some significant interactions between IL6 genotypes/haplotypes and diet quality were associated with body mass index, waist circumference, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, and estimated glomerular filtration rate., Conclusions: Interactions between diet quality and IL6 genotypes/haplotypes were associated with the main metabolic and renal function parameters in Mexican patients with T2DM. Background : The physical intervention techniques (PITs) typically used by the police in troublesome situations are examined in terms of injuring potential depending on whether they target a body zone of high, medium or low vulnerability. Based on legal and forensic considerations, and principles of congruence, opportunity and proportionality, a need exists to favor opponent locking and arrest techniques targeting non-vulnerable zones to minimize the risk of severe damage. Methods : A search of the training manuals for the different kind of law of enforcement officers was carried out. Revision of injuries was available from electronic databases of academic o medical journals. Results : Three different locking and arrest PITs based on operational tactical procedures (OTP) that avoid zones of high or medium vulnerability are proposed. The new techniques use blocking, diverting and grabbing of the upper and lower limbs, followed by dislocation and locking of the same targets. Conclusions : The damaging potential of such PITs was assessed in terms of anatomical region and most were found to have a high risk of severe damage. The alternative PITs proposed here, which rely on OTP, improve in legal and forensic medical terms on existing choices and dramatically reduce the risk of injuring arrestees.

Importance: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) care protocol has been shown to improve outcomes compared with traditional care in certain types of surgery., Objective: To assess the association of use of the ERAS protocols with complications in patients undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA)., Design, Setting, and Participants: This multicenter, prospective cohort study included patients recruited from 131 centers in Spain from October 22 through December 22, 2018. All consecutive adults scheduled for elective THA or TKA were eligible for inclusion. Patients were stratified between those treated in a self-designated ERAS center (ERAS group) and those treated in a non-ERAS center (non-ERAS group). Data were analyzed from June 15 through September 15, 2019., Exposures: Total hip or knee arthroplasty and perioperative management. Sixteen individual ERAS items were assessed in all included patients, whether they were treated at a center that was part of an established ERAS protocol or not., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was postoperative complications within 30 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes included length of stay and mortality., Results: During the 2-month recruitment period, 6146 patients were included (3580 women [58.2%]; median age, 71 [interquartile range (IQR), 63-76] years). Of these, 680 patients (11.1%) presented with postoperative complications. No differences were found in the number of patients with overall postoperative complications between ERAS and non-ERAS groups (163 [10.2%] vs 517 [11.4%]; odds ratio [OR], 0.89; 95% CI, 0.74-1.07; P = .22). Fewer patients in the ERAS group had moderate to severe complications (73 [4.6%] vs 279 [6.1%]; OR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.56-0.96; P = .02). The median overall adherence rate with the ERAS protocol was 50.0% (IQR, 43.8%-62.5%), with the rate for ERAS facilities being 68.8% (IQR, 56.2%-81.2%) vs 50.0% (IQR, 37.5%-56.2%) at non-ERAS centers (P < .001). Among the patients with the highest and lowest quartiles of adherence to ERAS components, the patients with the highest adherence had fewer overall postoperative complications (144 [10.6%] vs 270 [13.0%]; OR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.64-0.99; P < .001) and moderate to severe postoperative complications (59 [4.4%] vs 143 [6.9%]; OR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.45-0.84; P < .001) and shorter median length of hospital stay (4 [IQR, 3-5] vs 5 [IQR, 4-6] days; OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.96-0.99; P < .001)., Conclusions and Relevance: An increase in adherence to the ERAS program was associated with a decrease in postoperative complications, although only a few ERAS items were individually associated with improved outcomes.

The third multistakeholder Paediatric Strategy Forum organised by ACCELERATE and the European Medicines Agency focused on immune checkpoint inhibitors for use in combination therapy in children and adolescents. As immune checkpoint inhibitors, both as monotherapy and in combinations have shown impressive success in some adult malignancies and early phase trials in children of single agent checkpoint inhibitors have now been completed, it seemed an appropriate time to consider opportunities for paediatric studies of checkpoint inhibitors used in combination. Among paediatric patients, early clinical studies of checkpoint inhibitors used as monotherapy have demonstrated a high rate of activity, including complete responses, in Hodgkin lymphoma and hypermutant paediatric tumours. Activity has been very limited, however, in more common malignancies of childhood and adolescence. Furthermore, apart from tumour mutational burden, no other predictive biomarker for monotherapy activity in paediatric tumours has been identified. Based on these observations, there is collective agreement that there is no scientific rationale for children to be enrolled in new monotherapy trials of additional checkpoint inhibitors with the same mechanism of action of agents already studied (e.g. anti-PD1, anti-PDL1 anti-CTLA-4) unless additional scientific knowledge supporting a different approach becomes available. This shared perspective, based on scientific evidence and supported by paediatric oncology cooperative groups, should inform companies on whether a paediatric development plan is justified. This could then be proposed to regulators through the available regulatory tools. Generally, an academic-industry consensus on the scientific merits of a proposal before submission of a paediatric investigational plan would be of great benefit to determine which studies have the highest probability of generating new insights. There is already a rationale for the evaluation of combinations of checkpoint inhibitors with other agents in paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma and hypermutated tumours in view of the activity shown as single agents. In paediatric tumours where no single agent activity has been observed in multiple clinical trials of anti-PD1, anti-PDL1 and anti-CTLA-4 agents as monotherapy, combinations of checkpoint inhibitors with other treatment modalities should be explored when a scientific rationale indicates that they could be efficacious in paediatric cancers and not because these combinations are being evaluated in adults. Immunotherapy in the form of engineered proteins (e.g. monoclonal antibodies and T cell engaging agents) and cellular products (e.g. CAR T cells) has great therapeutic potential for benefit in paediatric cancer. The major challenge for developing checkpoint inhibitors for paediatric cancers is the lack of neoantigens (based on mutations) and corresponding antigen-specific T cells. Progress critically depends on understanding the immune macroenvironment and microenvironment and the ability of the adaptive immune system to recognise paediatric cancers in the absence of high neoantigen burden. Objectives: This paper describes some operational tactical procedures (OTP) and discusses the results of a 14-year-long study, spanning the period 2003-2016, conducted by the Municipal Police of Cádiz, Spain, which comprised 3 time periods: 2003-2006, when the officers were trained in traditional policing procedures; 2007-2013, when the officers were taught an innovative set of OTP in the form of a basic set of self-defense and arrest mechanisms, different from the traditional policing procedures that rely on martial arts and combat sports; and finally 2014-2016, when the OTP training was discontinued. The aim of this study was to improve policing and reduce officer injuries resulting from interventions in controversial or violent situations, such as problematic arrests., Material and Methods: The study involved 162 police officers and commanders of the Municipal Police of Cádiz, who were in street duty for their first time. There were 8 females and 154 males aged 24-55 years. Three OTP stages are shown as examples., Results: Based on the analysis of "training hours" and "physical interventions in problematic arrests," the results were: 1) the number of sick leaves in the police was identical according to the number of arrests, and 2) data on sick leaves show remarkable differences among the 3 periods under analysis., Conclusions: The OTP-based training substantially reduced officer sick leaves. The overall reduction in sick leaves in the period 2007-2013 was observed that cannot be ascribed to a decrease in criminal acts, and hence in police physical interventions. Sharks have been of great cultural and socioeconomic importance in Mexico since the late 19th century, when the first fisheries were prosecuted in the Gulf of California to export fins to China. Mexican shark and ray fisheries are classified mainly by the size of the fishing vessel and include small- (7.5-10m), medium- (10-27m), and large-sized (>27m) fisheries. All are multispecies fisheries that use longline or gillnet gear, with their relative productivity varying over time. Off the Pacific coast, early shark small size vessel fisheries in the Gulf of California were driven by the need for vitamin A from livers, especially during World War II. As this fishery declined, new shark fishing opportunities arose because of government support and the development of the medium-sized fishery, which was capable of farther offshore excursions. Shark meat became an important part of the diets of poor and impoverished citizens during the 1950s and 1960s. The establishment of a Mexican Exclusive Economic Zone in 1976 pushed foreign vessels from Asia out of Mexican waters and led to the development of the large-sized vessel fishery to exploit pelagic sharks in offshore waters. By the early 1980s, Mexico shark fisheries were among the most productive in the world; however, a national economic crisis reduced effort and landings until the late 1980s, when several new fisheries emerged. Landings from Pacific states fluctuated between ~13,000 and 24,000t (dressed weight) during 1987-2012 but expanded steadily thereafter because of government support and offshore fleet expansion. Shark fisheries landings from the Mexican Pacific are currently at their highest recorded levels, exceeding 31,000t; however, a lack of species-specific landings and life history information has precluded population assessments of targeted stocks. In addition, though several recent management measures have been enacted to protect Mexican shark and ray fishery resources, the enforcement of these regulations is severely lacking. Background and Aims: The perennial C4 grass Urochloa humidicola is widely planted on infertile acidic and waterlogging-prone soils of tropical America. Waterlogging results in soil anoxia, and O2 deficiency can reduce nutrient uptake by roots. Interestingly, both nutrient deficiencies and soil waterlogging can enhance root cortical cell senescence, and the increased gas-filled porosity facilitates internal aeration of roots. We tested the influence of nutrient supply and root-zone O2 on root traits, leaf nutrient concentrations and growth of U. humidicola., Methods: Plants were grown in pots in a completely randomized design under aerated or stagnant deoxygenated hydroponic conditions and six nutrient regimes, with low to high concentrations of all essential elements, for 28 d in a controlled-temperature greenhouse. The standard acid solution (SAS) used was previously designed based on infertile acidic soils of the tropical America savannas, and step increases in the concentration of SAS were used in aerated or deoxygenated 0.1 % agar solution, which mimics changes in gas composition in waterlogged soils. Measurements included shoot and root growth, root porosity, root anatomy, radial O2 loss, and leaf tissue nutrient concentrations., Key Results: Shoot dry mass was reduced for plants in stagnant compared with aerated conditions at high, but not at low, levels of mineral nutrition. In low-nutrition stagnant solution, roots were shorter, of greater porosity and had smaller radial thickness of the stele. Suberized lamellae and lignified sclerenchyma, as well as a strong barrier to radial O2 loss, were documented for roots from all treatments. Leaf nutrient concentrations of K, Mg and Ca (but not N, P and S) were higher in aerated than in stagnant conditions., Conclusions: Under low-nutrient conditions, plant growth in stagnant solution was equal to that in aerated solution, whereas under higher-nutrient regimes growth increased but dry mass in stagnant solution was less than in aerated solution. Slow growth in low-nutrient conditions limited any further response to the low O2 treatment, and greater porosity and smaller stele size in roots would enhance internal O2 movement within roots in the nutrient-limited stagnant conditions. A constitutive barrier to radial O2 loss and aerenchyma facilitates O2 movement to the tips of roots, which presumably contributes to maintaining nutrient uptake and the tolerance of U. humidicola to low O2 in the root-zone., (© The Author(s) 2019.
