This study takes the teaching reform concept of university PE teachers in the new era as the research object, and uses the literature method, logical analysis method and inductive deduction method to deeply analyze the development opportunity and realistic bottleneck of the teaching innovation concept of university PE teachers. The research shows that the teaching innovation concept of university PE teachers faces new challenges, and the generalization of education consciousness and the motivation of concept innovation of university PE teachers are insufficient. "Cultivating morality and cultivating people" as the basic task of education, the author puts forward the concept of "moral education first" in the innovation of teaching concept of physical education teachers in universities. Construct the evaluation system of "cultivating virtue" and "cultivating body"; To construct a new model of post-service education for physical education teachers in universities, and establish a new standard for the evaluation of professional titles of physical education teachers in universities; The new model of cultivating multi-disciplinary high quality sports talents and the concept of PE teachers' education should be integrated with aesthetic education. The aim is to provide theoretical reference for the timely updating of the teaching concept of university PE teachers under the background of the new era and optimizing the classified development of university PE teachers.

BackgroundThe serious air pollution of highway toll booths poses a high occupational exposure risk to toll collectors. It is urgent to develop purification methods suitable for airborne particles and microbial pathogens in highway toll booths. ObjectiveTo verify the purification effect of low temperature plasma air purifiers on airborne particles and microbes in highway toll booths. MethodsBased on controlled-intervention design, we selected three toll booths in an expressway toll station as on-site experimental locations for 6 d (no-intervention period: the low-temperature plasma purifier was turned off in the first three days; intervention period: the purifier was turned on from 9:00 to 17:00 in the following three days). The indoor and outdoor PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations were continuously monitored during the study. At 9:00, 12:00, and 17:00 of every day during the experiment, indoor and outdoor air samples were collected to analyze the concentration of airborne culturable colonies with a plankton sampler. Airborne particle samples were collected in the outermost exit continuously from 9:00 to 17:00 every day during the experiment using a medium flow particulate sampler, and the species and relative abundance of fungi and bacteria contained in the samples were analyzed by gene sequencing. Independent-sample t test was used to compare the concentration of indoor PM2.5, PM10, and culturable colonies between the intervention period and the non-intervention period. α diversity analysis, β diversity analysis, and t test were used to compare the diversity and relative abundance of specific species of bacteria and fungi, as well as typical pathogenic bacteria and fungi in the samples between the non-intervention period and the intervention period to reflect the purification effect of low temperature plasma air purifier on airborne PM2.5, PM10, and microorganisms. Objective: This study aims to explore the effect of noise in the emergency department on the occupational burnout and the resignation intentions of medical staff. Methods: This retrospective study selected 42 medical staff (group A) in the emergency department of our hospital from March 2020 to March 2021 and 39 medical staff (group B) in the rehabilitation department during the same period as research subjects. Noise levels in the daily working environment of medical staff were collected. The Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey and Intent to Leave Scale was used to evaluate occupational burnout and resignation intention. A multivariate linear regression analysis was adopted to explore the effects of noise exposure level in the emergency department on occupational burnout and resignation intention. Results: The scores of emotional fatigue, work apathy and sense of achievement in group A were higher than those in group B (P < 0.05), among which reverse scoring was adopted for sense of accomplishment. Group A had significantly higher scores of resignation intention I, resignation intention II and resignation intention III than group B (P < 0.001). The department of group A had significantly higher noise level than that of group B (P < 0.001). The Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that noise level in the emergency department was correlated with the occupational burnout and resignation intention of medical staff (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: The emergency department is exposed to a high noise level, which is correlated with the occupational burnout and resignation intentions of medical staff. Therefore, hospitals should give importance to noise exposure in the emergency departments and adopt positive coping strategies to reduce the effect of noise on medical staff and the resignation rate.

Background and Aim: Captivity alters the locomotor behavior of wild artiodactyls and affects the mechanical loading of the calcaneus; however, the resulting adaptive changes in calcaneus morphology have not been sufficiently studied to date. This study aimed to investigate the morphological and mechanical adaptive variations in the calcaneus of Saiga tatarica to understand further the functional adaptation of the calcaneus in wild artiodactyl to captivity. Materials and Methods: Paired calcanei from autopsy samples of six captive wild artiodactyls (S. tatarica) and six domesticated artiodactyls (Ovis aries) were divided into skeletally immature and mature groups using X-ray evaluation of growth plate closure. High-resolution microcomputed tomography revealed a calcaneal diaphyseal cross-section. The mechanical and nanomorphological characteristics of the trabecular bone were determined by atomic force microscopy. Results: The percent cortical bone area (%CA), cortical thickness ratio (CTR), and Young’s modulus (E) differed between species in the immature groups but not in the mature groups. S. tatarica had significantly higher growth rates for %CA, CTR, and E in the mid-shaft than O. aries (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The calcaneus morphology of S. tatarica converges with that of domesticated O. aries during ontogeny. These results indicate that the calcaneus of wild artiodactyls can undergo potentially transitional changes during the short-term adaptation to captivity. The above parameters can be preliminarily identified as morphological signs of functional bone adaptation in artiodactyls.

The alkaline process of spent nuclear fuel(SNF) reprocessing refers to reprocessing methods that use the alkaline solution of carbonates or hydroxides as the media to conduct the dissolution of SNF and subsequent separations of uranium, plutonium and other elements. Most of the fission products and minor actinides are either insoluble or changed to insoluble carbonates or hydroxides during the alkaline dissolution of SNF, indicating that the resulted dissolver solution contains less amount of fission and minor actinide elements. Thus, the solution is less radioactive and less corrosive in contrast to the acidic dissolver solution of commercial PUREX(plutonium uranium redox extraction) process. Due to advantages of the alkaline process and its important potential application in SNF reprocessing, researchers from Japan, Russia, the United States, South Korea, etc. have carried out some research work around this reprocessing method. This paper will review technical routes of the alkaline process proposed by these researchers and research progress related to the main processes such as oxidation dissolution of SNF, separation technologies and recovery of used reagents. The challenges and prospects in this field are also discussed.

BackgroundChimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell immunotherapy is becoming one of the most promising treatments for hematological malignancies, however, complications such as cytokine release syndrome (CRS) seriously threaten the lives of patients. Interleukin 6(IL-6) monoclonal antibody is the common and useful treatment of CRS, however, it is not clear whether prophylactic use IL-6 monoclonal antibody before CAR-T therapy can reduce the incidence of CRS.PurposeThis study aims to systematically evaluate whether the prophylactic use of IL-6 monoclonal antibody can reduce the incidence of CRS.Data sources and methodsWe searched the PubMed, Embase, web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for studies that reported the prophylactic use of IL-6 monoclonal antibody in the treatment of CRS-related complications of CAR-T cell immunotherapy before December 2022. The literature is screened according to the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, relevant data are extracted, and the quality of the literature is evaluated using the scale Cochrane bias risk assessment tool, and the Review Manager 5.3 is used to draw for related charts. Since the two experimental data only provide the median, the maximum and minimum values of the data, the mean and standard (Standard Deviation, SD) are calculated by this document Delai, and finally use Review Manager for data processing, and STATA software for supplementation.ResultsA total of 2 trials with a total of 37 participants were included in this study. Meta-analysis showed that compared with no use of IL-6 monoclonal antibody to prevent CRS, IL-6 monoclonal antibody was given to patients at 8 mg/kg one hour before CAR-T cell infusion, which reduced the incidence of CRS [RR: 0.41 95% confidence interval (0.20, 0.86) I[2] = 0.0% P = 0.338 z = −2.369 (p = 0.018)]. In subgroup analysis, compared with those who did not use IL-6 monoclonal antibody to prevent CRS, IL-6 monoclonal antibody was given to patients at 8 mg/kg one hour before CAR-T cell infusion, which reduced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)[MD: −617.21, 95% confidence interval (−1104.41, −130.01) I[2] = 0% P = 0.88 Z = 2.48 (P = 0.01)], prophylactic use of IL-6 monoclonal antibody has a significant effect on reducing peak C-reactive protein (CRP) after CAR-T therapy [MD: −11.58, 95% confidence interval (−15.28, −7.88) I[2] = 0.0% P = 0.73 z = 6.14 (p < 0.00001)].ConclusionThe prophylactic use of IL-6 monoclonal antibody can significantly reduce the incidence of CRS complications after CAR-T therapy, can also reduce LDH vaule and peak CRP vaule after CAR-T therapy.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42023487662, identifier CRD42023487662.

Objectives: Circ_003686 is a novel_circRNA with abnormally low expression found in the samples of multiple myeloma bone disease (MBD) patients. The current research intended to investigate the effects of novel_circ_003686 in osteogenesis-induced differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in MBD. Methods: BMSCs were extracted from MBD patients and normal participants, the pcDNA3.1 encoding the circ_003686 (ov-circ_003686), miR-142-5p-mimic/inhibitor and siRNA oligonucleotides targeting insulin like growth factor 1 (IGF1, si-IGF1) were applied to intervene circ_003686, miR-142-5p and IGF1 levels, respectively. Results: Results showed that ov-circ_003686 could mediate the osteogenesis-induced differentiation of MBD-BMSC, and luciferase assay and RIP experiments confirmed that circ_003686 could bind to miR-142-5p. MiR-142-5p-inhibitor helped osteogenesis-induced differentiation, while miR-142-5p-mimic inhibited osteogenesis-induced differentiation and reversed the promoting effect of ov-circ_003686, suggesting that circ_003686/miR-142-5p axis participated in osteogenesis-induced differentiation of MBD-BMSC. In addition, miR-142-5p binds to the target gene IGF1 and negatively adjust its expression. Si-IGF1 significantly inhibited the osteogenesis-induced differentiation and reversed the promotion effects of miR-142-5p-inhibitor and ov-circ_003686. Moreover, circ_003686/miR-142-5p/IGF1 axis meaningfully regulates protein expressions in the PI3K/AKT pathway. Conclusion: In conclusion, this research confirmed that circ_003686 regulated the osteogenesis-induced differentiation of MBD-BMSC by sponging miR-142-5p and mediating IGF1, and the PI3K/AKT pathway may also be involved.

High aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity is a metabolic feature of adult stem cells and various cancer stem cells (CSCs). The ALDEFLUOR system is currently the most commonly used method for evaluating ALDH enzyme activity in viable cells. This system is applied extensively in the isolation of normal stem cells and CSCs from heterogeneous cell populations. For many years, ALDH1A1 has been considered the most important subtype among the 19 ALDH family members in determining ALDEFLUOR activity. However, in recent years, studies of many types of normal and tumour tissues have demonstrated that other ALDH subtypes can also significantly influence ALDEFLUOR activity. In this article, we briefly review the relationships between various members of the ALDH family and ALDEFLUOR activity. The clinical significance of these ALDH isoforms in different cancers and possible directions for future studies are also summarised.

The treatment of simulated radioactive wastewater by air-gap membrane distillation process was conducted. The membrane flux and rejection rates of Cs+, Sr2+, Co2+ and UO2+2 were used as indexes to evaluate the performance of PTFE, PVDF and PP hydrophobic membranes. The effects of feed temperature, feed flow rate and air gap thickness on membrane flux and the rejection rates were discussed. The results show that the feed temperature has the most significant effect on the membrane flux. Increasing the feed temperature can significantly increase the membrane flux. The membrane flux of PTFE membrane with a pore size of 0.22 μm increases from 4.79 kg/(m2·h) to 16.24 kg/(m2·h), when the feed temperature increases from 60 ℃ to 90 ℃. Increasing the feed flow rate can notably increase the membrane flux in the lower feed flow rate range. But with the increase of feed flow rate, the increase rate of membrane flux is slowing down. Increasing the air gap thickness decreases the membrane flux. Within the experimental conditions, the process conditions have no obvious effect on the rejection rate. Among the above three hydrophobic membranes, the PTFE membrane with a pore size of 0.22 μm has the best rejection performance with the rejection rate above 99.97%. The PTFE membrane with a pore size of 0.22 μm is more suitable to be applied to treat radioactive wastewater by the membrane distillation process.

Abstract Background Several studies have reported that childhood prevalence of eczema has been increasing worldwide. However, none study quantitatively evaluated prevalence trends of eczema among children and adults in the last 30 years in China. Methods and Findings Via a systematic review of literature databases in English and Chinese, we summarized all studies reporting eczema prevalences from 1985 to 2015 in China as well as diagramed prevalence and eczematous population trends against year for different age groups. A total of 93 studies and 17 studies (16 for children and one for adults) were selected for qualitative and quantitative synthesis, respectively. Childhood lifetime-ever eczema prevalences ranged from 10.0% to 30.0%. Prevalences among 3-12-year-olds children showed increasing trends in most specific cities, but national lifetime-ever eczema prevalences among 13-14-year-olds children decreased from 10.6% in 2001 to 8.6% in 2009 in mainland China. We estimated that about 1.5 million children aged 13-14-year-olds in 2009 and 15.5 million children aged 3-6-year-olds in 2012 had lifetime-ever eczema in mainland China. Similar studies were too few to ascertain time-trends of eczema prevalence among adults. About 39.4, 20.0, and 11.6 million adults aged 15-86-year-olds in 2010 had contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis in the mainland China, respectively. Conclusions The burden of eczema became heavier in young children, whereas perhaps had been reduced in adolescent in China. More studies for eczema prevalence in adults are warranted.

Background and aimsThe disease burden attributable to metabolic risk factors is rapidly increasing in China, especially in older people. The objective of this study was to (i) estimate the pattern and trend of six metabolic risk factors and attributable causes in China from 1990 to 2019, (ii) ascertain its association with societal development, and (iii) compare the disease burden among the Group of 20 (G20) countries.MethodsThe main outcome measures were disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and mortality (deaths) attributable to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG), high systolic blood pressure (HSBP), high low-density lipoprotein (HLDL) cholesterol, high body-mass index (HBMI), kidney dysfunction (KDF), and low bone mineral density (LBMD). The average annual percent change (AAPC) between 1990 and 2019 was analyzed using Joinpoint regression.ResultsFor all six metabolic risk factors, the rate of DALYs and death increased with age, accelerating for individuals older than 60 and 70 for DALYs and death, respectively. The AAPC value in rate of DALYs and death were higher in male patients than in female patients across 20 age groups. A double-peak pattern was observed for AAPC in the rate of DALYs and death, peaking at age 20–49 and at age 70–95 plus. The age-standardized rate of DALYs increased for HBMI and LBMD, decreased for HFPG, HSBP, KDF, and remained stable for HLDL from 1990 to 2019. In terms of age-standardized rate of DALYs, there was an increasing trend of neoplasms and neurological disorders attributable to HFPG; diabetes and kidney diseases, neurological disorders, sense organ diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases, digestive diseases to HBMI; unintentional injuries to LBMD; and musculoskeletal disorders to KDF. Among 19 countries of Group 20, in 2019, the age-standardized rate of DALYs and death were ranked fourth to sixth for HFPG, HSBP, and HLDL, but ranked 10th to 15th for LBMD, KDF, and HBMI, despite the number of DALYs and death ranked first to second for six metabolic risk factors.ConclusionsPopulation aging continuously accelerates the metabolic risk factor driven disease burden in China. Comprehensive and tight control of metabolic risk factors before 20 and 70 may help to mitigate the increasing disease burden and achieve healthy aging, respectively.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous hematological malignancy. The bone marrow (BM) microenvironment in AML plays an important role in leukemogenesis, drug resistance and leukemia relapse. In this study, we aimed to identify reliable immune-related biomarkers for AML prognosis by multiomics analysis. We obtained expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and constructed a LASSO-Cox regression model to predict the prognosis of AML using multiomics bioinformatic analysis data. This was followed by independent validation of the model in the GSE106291 (n=251) data set and mutated genes in clinical samples for predicting overall survival (OS). Molecular docking was performed to predict the most optimal ligands to the genes in prognostic model. The single-cell RNA sequence dataset GSE116256 was used to clarify the expression of the hub genes in different immune cell types. According to their significant differences in immune gene signatures and survival trends, we concluded that the immune infiltration-lacking subtype (IL type) is associated with better prognosis than the immune infiltration-rich subtype (IR type). Using the LASSO model, we built a classifier based on 5 hub genes to predict the prognosis of AML (risk score = -0.086×ADAMTS3 + 0.180×CD52 + 0.472×CLCN5 - 0.356×HAL + 0.368×ICAM3). In summary, we constructed a prognostic model of AML using integrated multiomics bioinformatic analysis that could serve as a therapeutic classifier.

Lumbosacral spinal root avulsion (LSRA) is a severe nerve injury that results in devastating dysfunction in the lower limb. Circular ribonucleic acids (circRNAs) have been reported to be implicated in a variety of diseases. However, the role of circRNAs in LSRA remains unclear. Here, we performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to determine circRNA expression profiles in a rat LSRA model and further investigated their potential functions and the underlying mechanisms by bioinformatic analyses and in vitro experiments. In all, 1708 circRNAs were found to be differentially expressed in spinal cord tissues after LSRA (|fold change| ≥ 2 and p < 0.05), with 591 up-regulated 1117 down-regulated. Meanwhile, 2263 mRNAs were also indentified to be differentially expressed, of which 1471 were upregulated and 792 were downregulated. Eight randomly selected circRNAs and mRNA were successfully verified to be consistent the RNA-seq results by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Functional analyses based on gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes predicted the potential roles of differentially expressed circRNAs and mRNAs in LSRA, and circRNA/miRNA/mRNA interaction networks revealed that circRNA_7025, a down-regulated circRNA in LSRA, was targeted by two neuronal apoptosis-related miRNAs, rno-miR-1224 and rno-miR-326-5p. Further in vitro experiments revealed that circRNA_7025 protected against oxygen-glucose deprivation induced neuronal apoptosis via the circRNA_7025/miR-1224/miR-326-5p axis. In summary, our results revealed circRNA expression profiles and their potential functions in LSRA. These findings improve our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved in LSRA and might enable us to identify new molecular targets for LSRA.

Orexin signaling is provided by diffusely distributed fibers and involved in different brain circuits that orchestrate sleep and wakefulness states. Here, the authors show that a proportion of orexin neurons project to the sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus and exhibit rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related actions.

The standardized treatment plan for patients with plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) remains controversial. Taking morphological characteristics and immunophenotypes into consideration may provide superior options for the treatment of PBL. In this case, we report that a myeloma-type regimen containing bortezomib plus cyclophosphamide, epirubicin, vindesine and prednisolone (CDOP) followed by sequential autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and lenalidomide-based maintenance therapy to treat PBL may represent a promising regimen to improve the prognosis.

It is difficult to accurately measure the air exchange rate (AER) in residential and office buildings during occupation via on-site field measurement. The tracer gas method was widely applied to estimate the AER in these buildings, and human metabolic carbon dioxide (CO2) was often used as a tracer gas in different models. This study introduced three models (the ASHRAE model, the ASHRAE China-specific modified model, and the BMR model), which were proposed to estimate the AER based on exhaled CO2. We verified these models by comparing the exhaled CO2-based AER with AER from field measurements using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. We also analyzed the potential factors that could affect the uniformity of the indoor tracer gas distribution. Our results indicate that the ASHRAE China-specific modified model has the best performance with an average deviation of −6.67% and a maximum deviation of −14.6% with multiple measurement points, a stable personnel activity, and proper Parameter settings in a single room in China.

During 2010–2012, we conducted an observational study on household environment and health outcomes among 40,010 preschool children from seven cities of China. Here we examined associations of six dampness-related indicators (visible mold spots, visible damp stains, damp clothing and/or bedding, water damage, condensation on windowpane, moldy odor) in the current residence and three dampness-related indicators (visible mold spots, condensation on windowpane, moldy odor) in the early residence with childhood asthma and rhinitis. In the multi-level logistic regression analyses, visible mold spots and visible damp stains in the current residence were significantly associated with the increased odds of doctor-diagnosed asthma and allergic rhinitis during lifetime-ever (adjusted odd ratios (AORs) range: 1.18–1.35). All dampness-related indicators were significantly associated with increased odds of wheeze and rhinitis during lifetime-ever and in the past 12 months (AORs range: 1.16–2.64). The cumulative numbers of damp indicators had positively dose-response relationships with the increased odds of the studied diseases. These associations for wheeze and rhinitis were similar between northern children and southern children. Similar results were found in the sensitive analyses among children without a family history of allergies and among children without asthma and allergic rhinitis. For 3–6 years-old children in mainland of China in 2011, we speculated that about 90,000 (2.02%) children with asthma and about 59,000 (1.09%) children with allergic rhinitis could be attributable to exposing to visible mold spots in the current residence. Our results suggested that early and lifetime exposures to household dampness indicators are risk factors for childhood asthma and rhinitis. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are considered to be key events in acetaminophen (APAP)-induced acute liver injury. Mitochondrial quality control, including mitophagy and mitochondrial synthesis, can restore mitochondrial homeostasis and thus protect the liver. The role of PARK7, a mitochondrial stress protein, in regulating mitochondrial quality control in APAP-induced hepatotoxicity is unclear. In this study, L02 cells, AML12 cells and C57/BL6 mice were each used to establish models of APAP-induced acute liver injury. PARK7 was silenced in vitro by lentiviral transfection and knocked down in vivo by AAV adeno-associated virus. Changes in cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, serum enzyme activity and pathological features were evaluated after APAP treatment. Western blotting, real-time PCR, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy and Seahorse assays were used to detect changes in key indicators of mitochondrial quality control. The results showed that APAP treatment decreased cell viability and increased the apoptosis rate, ROS levels, serum enzyme activity, pathological damage and PARK7 expression. PARK7 silencing or knockdown ameliorated APAP-induced damage to the cells and liver. Furthermore, PARK7 silencing enhanced mitophagy, increased mitochondrial synthesis, and led to a switch from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis. Taken together, these results suggest that PARK7 is involved in APAP-induced acute liver injury by regulating mitochondrial quality control and metabolic reprogramming. Therefore, PARK7 may be a promising therapeutic target for APAP-induced liver injury.

Associations of asthma and rhinitis with residential traffic proximity were investigated in several studies, but conclusions were inconsistent. From January to April in 2015, a cross-sectional study was conducted in two cities of Shandong, China. Parents-reported questionnaires were collected from 69 kindergartens for 3–6-year-olds preschoolers. Here we investigated associations of four traffic-related facilities (main traffic road, automobile 4S shop, filling station, and ground car park) close to residence with childhood asthma and rhinitis under considering individual and residential characteristics. In the two-level (kindergarten-child) mixed-effect logistic regression analyses among 5640 children who did not change residences since birth, filling station close to residence within 100 m (reference: >200 m) was significantly associated with lifetime-ever asthma (adjusted odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 2.63, 1.28–5.40), wheeze (2.06, 1.35–3.15), rhinitis (1.69, 1.08–2.64) and current (past 12 months prior to the survey) wheeze (2.11, 1.34–3.34) and rhinitis (1.65, 1.05–2.59). Numbers of the facilities close to residence had dose-response relationships with odds of asthma, wheeze and rhinitis symptoms. These dose-response relationships were generally stronger in children whose bedrooms were in the 1st-3rd floors, and in children with low ventilation in bedroom and kitchen, and in children from families who did not using natural gas for cooking. The similar associations were found in the sensitive analyses among all surveyed 9597 children. Our results indicate that residence close to the traffic-related facilities likely is a risk factor for the occurrence of asthma and rhinitis among preschool children. The studied associations could be modified by household ventilation and air pollutants.

It’s inconsistent about associations of early exposures to outdoor air pollutants with allergies and airway diseases in childhood. Here, we investigated associations of prenatal and postnatal exposures to outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm) with asthma, wheeze, hay fever, rhinitis, pneumonia, and eczema in childhood. We surveyed 3,177 preschoolers who never change residences since birth in Shanghai, China. Parents reported information regarding children’s health status. Daily-averaged concentrations of these pollutants in the children’s gestation and in the first year of lifetime for district where children lived were collected by Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center. After adjusting for covariates, exposures to higher level of NO2 during different trimesters of gestation and of the first year of lifetime had significant associations with the increased odds of asthma, hay fever, rhinitis, pneumonia, and eczema in childhood. Associations of NO2 exposures in the early trimesters of gestation and of the first year of lifetime with pneumonia were stronger than in the later trimesters, whereas associations of NO2 exposures in the early trimesters with hay fever and eczema were weaker than in the later trimesters. Our results indicated that prenatal and postnatal exposures to outdoor NO2 could be risk factors for allergies and airway diseases in childhood. Both dose and duration were related with the influence degree of early NO2 exposure on childhood allergies and airway diseases.

Many studies have investigated the associations between household damp indicators, and allergies and respiratory diseases in childhood. However, the findings are rather inconsistent. In 2010, we conducted a cross-sectional study of preschoolers aged three-six years in three urban districts of Chongqing, China. In 2019, we repeated this cross-sectional study with preschoolers of the same ages and districts. Here, we selected data for 2935 and 2717 preschoolers who did not change residences since birth in the 2010 and 2019 studies, respectively. We investigated associations of household damp indicators with asthma, allergic rhinitis, pneumonia, eczema, wheeze, and rhinitis in childhood in the two studies. The proportions of residences with household damp indicators and the prevalence of the studied diseases (except for allergic rhinitis) were significantly lower in 2019 than in 2010. In the two-level (district-child) logistic regression analyses, household damp exposures that showed by different indicators were significantly associated with the increased odds of lifetime-ever asthma (range of adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.69–3.50 in 2019; 1.13–1.90 in 2010), allergic rhinitis (1.14–2.39; 0.67–1.61), pneumonia (1.09–1.64; 1.21–1.59), eczema (0.96–1.83; 0.99–1.56), wheeze (1.64–2.79; 1.18–1.91), rhinitis (1.43–2.71; 1.08–1.58), and current (in the past 12 months before the survey) eczema (0.46–2.08; 0.99–1.48), wheeze (0.97–2.86; 1.26–2.07) and rhinitis (1.34–2.25; 1.09–1.56) in most cases. The increased odds ratios (ORs) of most diseases had exposure–response relationships with the cumulative number (n) of household damp indicators in the current and early residences. Our results indicated household damp exposure could be a risk factor for childhood allergic and respiratory diseases, although the magnitudes of these effects could be different in different studies.

Background: Few studies can be found on phthalate exposure in relation to childhood asthma and allergic symptoms from Mainland China, where a persistent increase in prevalence of childhood asthma and allergic disease has been observed. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the exposure levels to phthalates and its relationship with asthmatic and allergic symptoms among children in Shanghai, which has the highest prevalence of childhood asthma in Mainland China. Methods: A follow-up study (2013–2014) of 434 children aged 5–10 years was conducted, based on the China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH) study (2011−2012) in Shanghai, China. Information on asthmatic and allergic symptoms (wheeze, rhinitis, and eczema) were collected using validated questionnaires. Ten phthalate metabolites in morning urine samples were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the associations between symptoms and urinary phthalate metabolites controlling for demographics, family history of allergic diseases and other covariates. Results: Nine out of 10 phthalate metabolites were detected in all subjects (average detection rate of 93.2%). By multivariable logistic regression analyses, the 4th quartile of Mono‑n‑butyl phthalate (MnBP) (reference: 1st quartile) had adjusted prevalence odds ratios (aPORS) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of 2.27(1.06–4.88), 2.14(1.02–4.46) and 2.98(1.19–7.50) for wheeze, rhinitis and eczema, respectively, while those of Mono‑isobutyl phthalate (MiBP) were 2.23(1.08–4.62) and 2.96(1.02–8.60) for rhinitis and eczema, respectively. The highest quartile of mono‑2‑ethyl‑5‑hydroxyhexyl phthalate(MEHHP) and mono‑2‑ethyl‑5‑oxohexyl phthalate(MEOHP) had aPORS and 95%CIs of 3.10(1.10–8.74) and 2.63(1.02–6.80) for eczema, respectively. By summing up the 4 low molecular weight metabolites (∑4LMWP) and all 9 metabolites (∑9Total), the highest quartiles of ∑4LMWP and∑9Total were significantly associated with all symptoms. In most of the above associations, a significantly increasing trend from the 1st to the 4th quartile was observed. Subjects with 2 or 3 concomitant symptoms (reference: no symptoms) had significant positive associations with a higher level (the 4th quartile) of phthalate metabolites. Conclusions: Low MW metabolites such as MnBP and MiBP, high MW DEHP and the total amount of phthalate metabolites might have adverse health effects on asthma and allergic symptoms in Chinese children. The developmental competence of oocytes during in vitro maturation (IVM) is compromised due to asynchronous nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation. To improve IVM efficiency, a pre-maturation culture or two-step maturation strategy has been established, involving meiosis arrest induced by pharmacological agents to provide oocytes with sufficient time to synchronize the maturation of the nucleus and cytoplasm. C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), which has been demonstrated to function as an oocyte maturation inhibitor (OMI) in many species, provides a new alternative to improve the developmental capacity of oocytes matured in vitro. However, the effect of CNP on meiosis arrest and the maturation of goat oocytes remains unclear. In the present study, CNP was shown to function as an OMI in goat oocytes. CNP could temporarily maintain the meiotic arrest of goat oocytes cultured in vitro for 4 hours. This transient effect was partly due to the reduction of natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (Npr2). Estradiol could delay the decrease in Npr2 expression and prolong the duration of meiosis arrest up to 6 hours. Based on the above results, a two-step method was established for goat oocyte maturation, in which the oocyte maturation rate was significantly increased. After parthenogenetic activation, the cleavage rate, blastocyst rate and total cell number of blastocysts were significantly improved. Our results suggested that CNP can be used to delay meiotic resumption and enhance the developmental competence of goat oocytes matured in vitro.

This paper focuses on the neutron spectrum measurement using a liquid scintillation detector, where the neutron spectrum could be identified and unfolded from the light output distribution of the EJ-301 liquid scintillation detector through a linear artificial neural network (ANN). The response functions of the EJ-301 detector for monoenergetic neutron sources, as well as the light outputs, have been simulated and calculated by Monte Carlo procedure FLUKA. The linear ANN was trained and tested through the simulated data, where response functions were set as the input of ANN and the corresponding neutron spectra were output. Therefore, the neutron spectrum-unfolding model was created. This spectrum-unfolding model was tested through the light outputs induced by monoenergetic neutrons and the random superposition of them. Unfolding results show that this model could identify the information of the neutron spectrum accurately from the light outputs of a liquid scintillation detector. Moreover, the EJ-301 detector was used to measure the radioactivity of 252Cf, and the pulse height distribution induced by neutrons was derived through the charge-comparison method to remove the influence of gamma rays. The measured pulse height distribution was unfolded by the trained model, and measured results show that the unfolded neutron spectrum of 252Cf was consistent with the reference one. This paper presents the feasibility that the unknown neutron spectrum could be identified and confirmed through a linear neural network trained by simulated monoenergetic neutron response functions, which could be a candidate of choice for the determination of the neutron spectrum.
