We demonstrate direct, acoustically mediated spin control of naturally occurring negatively charged silicon monovacancies (V$_{Si}^-$) in a high quality factor Lateral Overtone Bulk Acoustic Resonator fabricated out of high purity semi-insulating 4H-Silicon Carbide. We compare the frequency response of silicon monovacancies to a radio-frequency magnetic drive via optically-detected magnetic resonance and the resonator's own radio-frequency acoustic drive via optically-detected spin acoustic resonance and observe a narrowing of the spin transition to nearly the linewidth of the driving acoustic resonance. We show that acoustic driving can be used at room temperature to induce coherent population oscillations. Spin acoustic resonance is then leveraged to perform stress metrology of the lateral overtone bulk acoustic resonator, showing for the first time the stress distribution inside a bulk acoustic wave resonator. Our work can be applied to the characterization of high quality-factor micro-electro-mechanical systems and has the potential to be extended to a mechanically addressable quantum memory.

Van der Waals layered materials are a focus of materials research as they support strong quantum effects and can easily form heterostructures. Electron spins in van der Waals materials played crucial roles in many recent breakthroughs, including topological insulators, two-dimensional (2D) magnets, and spin liquids. However, nuclear spins in van der Waals materials remain an unexplored quantum resource. Here we report the first demonstration of optical polarization and coherent control of nuclear spins in a van der Waals material at room temperature. We use negatively-charged boron vacancy ($V_B^-$) spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride to polarize nearby nitrogen nuclear spins. Remarkably, we observe the Rabi frequency of nuclear spins at the excited-state level anti-crossing of $V_B^-$ defects to be 350 times larger than that of an isolated nucleus, and demonstrate fast coherent control of nuclear spins. We also detect strong electron-mediated nuclear-nuclear spin coupling that is 5 orders of magnitude larger than the direct nuclear spin dipolar coupling, enabling multi-qubit operations. Nitrogen nuclear spins in a triangle lattice will be suitable for large-scale quantum simulation. Our work opens a new frontier with nuclear spins in van der Waals materials for quantum information science and technology.

The recently discovered spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a layered van der Waals material, have great potential in quantum sensing. However, the photoluminescence and the contrast of the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) of hBN spin defects are relatively low so far, which limits their sensitivity. Here we report a record-high ODMR contrast of 46$\%$ at room temperature, and simultaneous enhancement of the photoluminescence of hBN spin defects by up to 17-fold by the surface plasmon of a gold-film microwave waveguide. Our results are obtained with shallow boron vacancy spin defects in hBN nanosheets created by low-energy He$^+$ ion implantation, and a gold-film microwave waveguide fabricated by photolithography. We also explore the effects of microwave and laser powers on the ODMR, and improve the sensitivity of hBN spin defects for magnetic field detection. Our results support the promising potential of hBN spin defects for nanoscale quantum sensing.

Silicon carbide (SiC) excels in its outstanding mechanical properties, which are widely studied in Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Recently, the mechanical tuning of color centers in 4H-SiC has been demonstrated, broadening its application in quantum spintronics. The strain generated in a mechanical resonator can be used to manipulate the quantum state of the color center qubit. This work reports a lateral overtone mechanical resonator fabricated from a semi-insulating (SI) bulk 4H-SiC wafer. An aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric transducer on SiC is used to drive the resonance. The resonator shows a series of modes with quality factors (Q) above 3000. An acoustic reflector positioned at the anchor shows a 22% improvement in the Q at 300 MHz resonance and suppresses the overtone modes away from it. This monolithic SiC resonator allows optical access to the SiC color centers from both sides of the wafer, enabling convenient setup in quantum measurements., Comment: 4 pages 5 figures

This paper demonstrates the first beam resonators fabricated from bulk high purity semi-insulating 4H Silicon Carbide wafers (HPSI 4H-SiC). Our innovations include: (1) Multi-level front-side, back-side inductively coupled plasma-deep reactive ion etching (ICP-DRIE) technology to fabricate thin, low-mass, bending-mode resonators framed by the SiC substrate (2) Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) measurements of mechanical quality factors (Q) > 10,000 with frequencies ranging from 300 kHz to 8MHz and (3) Calculated uniaxial in-plane surface stress 20 MPa at top surface of resonator base when operating at resonance in vacuum., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Diamond-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) enable direct coupling between the quantum states of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers and the phonon modes of a mechanical resonator. One example, diamond high-overtone bulk acoustic resonators (HBARs), feature an integrated piezoelectric transducer and support high-quality factor resonance modes into the GHz frequency range. The acoustic modes allow mechanical manipulation of deeply embedded NV centers with long spin and orbital coherence times. Unfortunately, the spin-phonon coupling rate is limited by the large resonator size, $>100~\mu$m, and thus strongly-coupled NV electron-phonon interactions remain out of reach in current diamond BAR devices. Here, we report the design and fabrication of a semi-confocal HBAR (SCHBAR) device on diamond (silicon carbide) with $f\cdot Q>10^{12}$($>10^{13}$). The semi-confocal geometry confines the phonon mode laterally below 10~$\mu$m. This drastic reduction in modal volume enhances defect center electron-phonon coupling. For the native NV centers inside the diamond device, we demonstrate mechanically driven spin transitions and show a high strain-driving efficiency with a Rabi frequency of $(2\pi)2.19(14)$~MHz/V$_{p}$, which is comparable to a typical microwave antenna at the same microwave power., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures including supporting information
