Jiří Levý's and Anton Popovič's theories of (literary) translation and their theoretical and methodological undepinnings (Czech and Slovak structuralisms) as well as their conception of a full-fledged discipline are critically revised on the background of present-day western Translation Studies (TS), now facing sociological and ideological turns, critique and new challenges, as well as on the background of their traditions. And vice versa. However, the focus is on translativity, Levý's category and Popovič's norm, unknown in western TS; the category was studied on translation of advertisements into Czech (a longitudinal study spanning 1990-2005). Possibilities of innovation are suggested in terms of TS theory and methodology, e.g. integration of psychology ot marketing studies) since the role of the receiver has been neglected and eficiency of transaltion has generally been only hypothetized. The task of studying new translation phenomena (e.g. fanslation, localization of iternational magazines, institutional quality standardization) should not be underestimated and presents not only another challenge, but aslo new methodological possibilities on the way to TS modernization. This bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The first one is a translation of five essays from the publication The Anthropocene Reviewed by the American writer John Green. The second part of this bachelor thesis consists of a commentary which contains a translation analysis of the original, description of the chosen translation method and description of translation problems and their solutions.

This thesis is dealing with translation of two selected chapters from On Writing and Worldbuilding: Volume I (2019) and a commentary of said translation. The book was written by Timothy Hickson. The former chapter is dedicated to foreshadowing and its subtypes, and its uses whereas the latter discuses polytheistic religions, its creation, and general rules. The author uses examples from fantastical literature as a mean to demonstrate described techniques. Following is a commentary of the translation consisting of two parts: analysis of the original text and the overview of translation problems and their solutions.

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to translate into Czech a part of Chapter Six from the non- fiction science book Strange Glow: The Story of Radiation by Timothy J. Jorgensen, professor of Radiation Medicine at Georgetown University. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to translate a part of chapter eight from The Invisible History of the Human Race by Christine Kenneally. The selected chapter discusses how DNA research conducted in Great Britain contributed to better understanding of its history. The theoretical part consists of the source text analysis, the description of the selected translation method, the translation problems analysis and the typology of the translation procedures and shifts applied.

This bachelor thesis focuses on the translation of the second chapter of The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and its Scientific Pretensions by David Berlinski from English to Czech. The objective of this thesis is to translate an online article called How one of the most obese countries on earth took on the soda giants, published in The Guardian, from Czech to English. The article, written by the US journalist Tina Rosenberg in November 2015, informs about the role soda plays in Mexico and attempts to trace the political and cultural circumstances that led to the current situation in the country. The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is to translate the third chapter from the book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterson into Czech. The second part consists of a commentary of this translation. The first part of the commentary is a translation analysis of the intratextual and extratextual factors of the source text. The second part is the description of the principal translation problems and their solution that are in selected cases accompanied by a comparison with a published translation of the source text. The third part contains shifts that occurred in the translation and finally, the fourth part presents the translation method.

This theoretic-historiographical thesis examines the life and work of the linguist and translation theorist Eugene A. Nida (1914-2011). It analyses his theoretical and methodological underpinnings, most important publications and theories and evalues his contribution to translation studies. Nida is presented in his role of theoretician, methodologician and organiser, whose theory of formal and dynamic (or functional) equivalence contributed to the development of Bible translation and translation theory in general. The thesis includes comprehensive bibliography of E. Nida.

(in English): The thesis looks at the transfer of humour in audiovisual texts in sitcoms. The theoretical part introduces the topic, including types of jokes, strategies relating to the transfer of humour and the factors influencing the choice of a particular strategy. The empirical part is based on the analysis of professional and amateur subtitles of the British sitcom Miranda. This part analyses the humour of the series from the polysemiotic perspective. It focuses on the strategies of the transfer of language-dependent, cultural and complex jokes, the functionality of translation based on whether a humorous effect is produced or not, and the differences between the strategies of professional and amateur translators.

The present theoretical-empirical diploma thesis in the field of interpreting studies analyses the transfer of conative function in bidirectional simultaneous interpreting between Czech and English. The theoretical part of the thesis presents an overview of the present knowledge in relation to the conative or persuasive function of language and its transfer in interpreting. The methodological framework and initial hypothesis underlying the empirical part of the thesis are then defined. The research material used for the quantitative-qualitative research consists of a corpus of recordings of original and interpreted speeches from the European Parliament. The aim of the present thesis is to explore to what degree the conative function, being the dominant language function in political discourse, is preserved in the interpreted versions of the speeches, on the basis of which debates in this multilingual institution take place. The empirical research follows from a contrastive analysis of the transfer of individual categories of the means of the conative function in simultaneous interpreting for the given language pair. Results of the research are interpreted in terms of the characteristics of the original speech, type of interpreting and directionality.
