Abstract Much in vivo evidence indicates that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is deeply involved in tumorigenesis. Although it has been proposed that COX-2-derived pro-inflammatory prostanoids mediate the tumorigenic activity of COX-2, the tumorigenic mechanisms of COX-2 are not yet fully understood. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which COX-2 causes transformation from normal cells to malignant cells by using normal murine or human cells. We found that COX-2 inhibits the pro-senescent function of p53 under oncogenic RAS activation, by which it prevents oncogene-induced senescence (OIS) and induces neoplastic transformation. We also found that COX-2 physically interacts with p53 in the nucleus under oncogenic RAS activation, and that this COX-2-p53 interaction rather than the catalytic activity is involved in the COX-2-mediated inhibition of the pro-senescent function of p53 and OIS, and induction of neoplastic transformation. These findings strongly suggest that the oncogenic property of COX-2 is closely related to its ability to inactivate p53 under strong mitogenic signals, and that aberrant activation of the COX-2/a mitogenic oncogene combination can be a potent driving force for tumorigenesis. This study might contribute to our understanding of the molecular basis for the tumorigenic activity of COX-2 and the development of novel anti-tumor drugs targeting COX-2-p53 interactions.

Although many cancer patients are administered radiotherapy for their treatment, the interaction between tumor cells and macrophages in the tumor microenvironment attenuates the curative effects of radiotherapy. The enhanced activation of mTOR signaling in the tumors promotes tumor radioresistance. In this study, the effects of rapamycin on the interaction between tumor cells and macrophages were investigated. Rapamycin and 3BDO were used to regulate the mTOR pathway. In vitro, tumor cells cocultured with macrophages in the presence of each drug under normoxic or hypoxic conditions were irradiated with γ–rays. In vivo, mice were irradiated with γ–radiation after injection with DMSO, rapamycin and 3BDO into tumoral regions. Rapamycin reduced the secretion of IL-4 in tumor cells as well as YM1 in macrophages. Mouse recombinant YM1 decreased the enhanced level of ROS and the colocalized proportion of both xCT and EEA1 in irradiated tumor cells. Human recombinant YKL39 also induced results similar to those of YM1. Moreover, the colocalized proportion of both xCT and LC3 in tumor tissues was elevated by the injection of rapamycin into tumoral regions. Overall, the suppression of mTOR signaling in the tumor microenvironment might be useful for the improvement of tumor radioresistance.

Background: Korean ginseng is an important cash crop in Asian countries. However, plant yield is reduced by pathogens. Among the Ilyonectria radicicola-species complex, I. mors-panacis is responsible for root-rot and replant failure of ginseng in Asia. The development of new methods to reveal the existence of the pathogen before cultivation is started is essential. Therefore, a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction method was developed to detect and quantify the pathogen in ginseng soils. Methods: In this study, a species-specific histone H3 primer set was developed for the quantification of I. mors-panacis. The primer set was used on DNA from other microbes to evaluate its sensitivity and selectivity for I. mors-panacis DNA. Sterilized soil samples artificially infected with the pathogen at different concentrations were used to evaluate the ability of the primer set to detect the pathogen population in the soil DNA. Finally, the pathogen was quantified in many natural soil samples. Results: The designed primer set was found to be sensitive and selective for I. mors-panacis DNA. In artificially infected sterilized soil samples, using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction the estimated amount of template was positively correlated with the pathogen concentration in soil samples (R2 = 0.95), disease severity index (R2 = 0.99), and colony-forming units (R2 = 0.87). In natural soils, the pathogen was recorded in most fields producing bad yields at a range of 5.82 ± 2.35 pg/g to 892.34 ± 103.70 pg/g of soil. Conclusion: According to these results, the proposed primer set is applicable for estimating soil quality before ginseng cultivation. We have previously reported that NS-398, a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)–selective inhibitor, inhibited replicative cellular senescence in human dermal fibroblasts and skin aging in hairless mice. In contrast, celecoxib, another COX-2–selective inhibitor, and aspirin, a non-selective COX inhibitor, accelerated the senescence and aging. To figure out causal factors for the senescence-modulating effect of the inhibitors, we here performed cDNA microarray experiment and subsequent Gene Set Enrichment Analysis. The data showed that several senescence-related gene sets were regulated by the inhibitor treatment. NS-398 up-regulated gene sets involved in the tumor necrosis factor β receptor pathway and the fructose and mannose metabolism, whereas it down-regulated a gene set involved in protein secretion. Celecoxib up-regulated gene sets involved in G2M checkpoint and E2F targets. Aspirin up-regulated the gene set involved in protein secretion, and down-regulated gene sets involved in RNA transcription. These results suggest that COX inhibitors modulate cellular senescence by different mechanisms and will provide useful information to understand senescence-modulating mechanisms of COX inhibitors.

Korean learners of English are known to repair consonant clusters, which are not allowed in their native language, with an epenthetic vowel [close central unrounded vowel]. The purpose of the present study is to examine whether the perception-production link of such an illusory vowel in a second language (L2) is only within and not across processing levels, as proposed in a previous study regarding L2 segments. We assessed the perception and production of English onset clusters by Korean learners and native English speakers at the prelexical (AX discrimination and pseudoword read-aloud tasks) and lexical (lexical decision and picture-naming tasks) levels, using the same participants and stimuli across the tasks. Results showed that accuracy in not producing an epenthetic vowel between the two consonants of onset cluster was not significantly associated with accurate perception of the cluster either within or across processing levels. The results suggest that production and perception accuracy in L2 phonotactics are independent to a certain extent.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor, generally affecting young people. While the etiology of osteosarcoma has been largely unknown, recent studies have suggested that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) plays a critical role in the proliferation, migration, and invasion of osteosarcoma cells. To understand the mechanism of action of COX-2 in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma, we compared gene expression patterns between three stable COX-2-overexpressing cell lines and three control cell lines derived from U2OS human osteosarcoma cells. The data showed that 56 genes were upregulated, whereas 20 genes were downregulated, in COX-2-overexpressed cell lines, with an average fold-change > 1.5. Among the upregulated genes, COL1A1, COL5A2, FBN1, HOXD10, RUNX2, and TRAPPC2are involved in bone and skeletal system development, while DDR2, RAC2, RUNX2, and TSPAN31are involved in the positive regulation of cell proliferation. Among the downregulated genes, HIST1H1D, HIST1H2AI, HIST1H3H, and HIST1H4C are involved in nucleosome assembly and DNA packaging. These results may provide useful information to elucidate the molecular mechanism of the COX-2-mediated malignant phenotype in osteosarcoma.

Abstract High-throughput screening techniques are pivotal to unlocking the mysteries of biology. Yet, the promise of droplet microfluidics in enabling single-cell resolution, ultra-high-throughput screening remains largely unfulfilled. Droplet sorting errors caused by polydisperse droplet sizes that are often inevitable in multi-step assays have severely limited the effectiveness and utility of this technique, especially when screening large libraries. Even a relatively low 1% sorting error results in 10,000 false calls in a 1,000,000 droplet screen, imposing an unreasonably large burden on downstream validation. Here, we present NOVAsort (Next-generation Opto-Volume-based Accurate droplet sorter), a device capable of discerning droplets based on both size and fluorescence intensity. With a 1000- and 10,000-fold reduction in false positives and false negatives, respectively. NOVAsort addresses the challenges of conventional droplet sorting approaches and sets standards for accuracy and throughput in droplet microfluidic assays.

Background/purpose: Peri-implantitis is a representative etiology that affects the long-term survival of dental implants. It is known that decontamination of the implant surface is essential for the successful outcome of regenerative therapy for peri-implantitis. In the present study, the stability of a novel separable dental implant (SDI) was evaluated and compared with a conventional non-separable dental implant (NDI) using biomechanical and histomorphometric analyses. Materials and methods: In this animal study, 40 rabbits were implanted with two SDI fixtures in the left tibia and two NDI fixtures in the right tibia. The rabbits were sacrificed 3 and 6 weeks after implantation, and the implant samples were evaluated using resonance frequency analysis (RFA), micro-computed tomography (CT), removal torque testing, and histomorphometric analysis. Results: SDI exhibited comparable or better osseointegration and implant stability to NDI. In particular, SDI showed significantly higher implant stability quotient (ISQ) values immediately and 6 weeks after implantation, while removal torque values were significantly higher at both 3 and 6 weeks. In addition, microgaps on the histomorphometric images were not observed and abnormal signs or inflammation did not occur at the connection between the top and bottom parts of the SDI. Conclusion: The novel SDI fixture demonstrated sufficient osseointegration and biomechanical stability compared with NDI in this animal study. In addition, the changeable top part of SDI indicates that it may be effective in easily treating peri-implantitis in clinical practice. Additional future studies on the stability and clinical application after loading to the fixture are necessary.

Abstract Background The Anopheles Hyrcanus group, which transmits Plasmodium vivax, consists of six confirmed species in South Korea. An epidemiological study revealed differences in the seasonal occurrence patterns of each species. Pyrethroid resistance in An. sinensis dates back to the early 2000s, whereas information on pyrethroid resistance in other species is lacking despite their greater significance in malaria epidemiology. Methods Anopheles mosquitoes were collected from two malaria-endemic regions in South Korea for 2 years and their knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations were genotyped. The larval susceptibility to λ-cyhalothrin was compared in six Anopheles species and its seasonal changes in three species were investigated. The full-length sequences of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel (VSSC) were compared across six species to evaluate potential target-site insensitivity. The contribution of the kdr mutation to phenotypic resistance was confirmed by comparing median lethal time (LT50) to λ-cyhalothrin between populations of Anopheles belenrae with distinct genotypes. Results The composition and seasonal occurrence of rare species (Anopheles kleini, Anopheles lestri, and Anopheles sineroides) varied considerably, whereas An. sinensis occurs continuously throughout the season. A kdr mutation in the form of heterozygous allele was newly identified in An. belenrae, An. lesteri, An. pullus, and An. sineroides. The baseline susceptibility to λ-cyhalothrin was the highest in An. belenrae, followed by An. lesteri, An. sineroides, An. kleini, An. pullus, and An. sinensis, with median lethal concentration (LC50) values ranging from 6.0- to 73.5-fold higher than that of An. belenrae. The susceptibility of An. sinensis and An. pullus varied by season, whereas that of An. belenrae remained stable. The kdr-heterozygous An. belenare population exhibited 5.1 times higher LT50 than that of the susceptible population. Species-specific VSSC sequence differences were observed among the six species. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the status and extent of pyrethroid resistance vary among Anopheles Hyrcanus group species. While An. sinensis, the predominant species, developed a considerable level of pyrethroid resistance through kdr mutation, the resistance levels of other species appeared to be less pronounced. Large-scale monitoring is crucial to fully understand species-specific seasonal occurrence and resistance status for effective management strategies, considering the ongoing impact of climate change on their vectorial capacity. Abstract Background The resurgence of two bed bug species, the common bed bug (Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758) and tropical bed bug (Cimex hemipterus Fabricius, 1803), in the same geographical regions has been frequently reported recently. Consequently, the rapid identification of these species is crucial for implementing targeted capture traps and tailored pyrethroid resistance diagnosis, due to differences in genetic and physiological traits. Methods To develop molecular diagnostic methods, distinct protocols were established for multiplex PCR and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) using species-specific primers based on species-specific segments of internal transcribed spacer 2 sequences. These methods were optimized for rapid and accurate identification of the two bed bug species. Results Both multiplex PCR and LAMP protocols were effective in simultaneously identifying the two bed bug species, even when utilizing DNA released from dead specimens. Notably, the straightforward procedure and minimal time commitment of LAMP suggest its potential for rapid and accurate diagnosis of bed bugs in the field. The diagnostic accuracy of these methods was validated through a blind test. Conclusions The multiplex PCR and LAMP protocols lay the foundation for rapid and accurate field identification of bed bug species, enabling the use of appropriate traps and the detection of species-specific pyrethroid resistance mutations. Abstract This retrospective study aimed to analyze volumetric changes of the maxillary sinus after modified endoscopic-assisted sinus surgery (MESS) and to assess short-term treatment outcomes. The volumes of the total maxillary sinus, aeration, and sinus pathology were calculated using computed tomography data obtained prior to surgery and six months after surgery. Abstract Spatiotemporal control of full freedoms of polarized light emission is crucial in multiplexed optical computing, encryption and communication. Although recent advancements have been made in active emission or passive conversion of polarized light through solution-processed nanomaterials or metasurfaces, these design paths usually encounter limitations, such as small polarization degrees, low light utilization efficiency, limited polarization states, and lack of spatiotemporal control. Here, we addressed these challenges by integrating the spatiotemporal modulation of the LED device, the precise control and efficient polarization emission through nanomaterial assembly, and the programmable patterning/positioning using 3D printing. We achieved an extremely high degree of polarization for both linearly and circularly polarized emission from ultrathin inorganic nanowires and quantum nanorods thanks to the shear-force-induced alignment effect during the protruding of printing filaments. Real-time polarization modulation covering the entire Poincaré sphere can be conveniently obtained through the programming of the on-off state of each LED pixel. Further, the output polarization states can be encoded by an ordered chiral plasmonic film. Our device provides an excellent platform for multiplexing spatiotemporal polarization information, enabling visible light communication with an exceptionally elevated level of physical layer security and multifunctional encrypted displays that can encode both 2D and 3D information.

Abstract Microneedle (MN) technology offers a powerful approach for transdermal delivery enabling painless injection and facilitating self‐administration without the need for professional assistance. However, the weak mechanical strength of MNs can lead to inefficient drug delivery and serious skin irritation if the MNs fracture during administration and leave fragments under the skin. Thus, the MNs need to be mechanically robust to avoid fracture during penetration through the skin while maintaining efficient drug delivery. Herein, the polymer‐based MNs with layer‐by‐layer (LbL) films of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) and a polycation (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC)) followed by hydrothermal calcination are reinforced. The mechanical strength of the MNs is significantly improved after LbL assembly and shows lower threshold pressure to penetrate skins. Moreover, their drug loading and releasing properties are significantly enhanced due to an increase in the surface area and interfacial interaction. These SiO2 nanoparticle‐containing LbL thin films have great potential for the surface modification of 3D microstructured devices such as MNs, as evidenced by their enhanced mechanical strength and drug coating efficiency that result in a promising MN drug delivery model.

Abstract BackgroundProfessionals with expertise in health informatics play a crucial role in the digital health sector. Despite efforts to train experts in this field, the specific impact of such training, especially for individuals from diverse academic backgrounds, remains undetermined. ObjectiveThis study therefore aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive health informatics training program on graduates with respect to their job roles, transitions, and competencies and to provide insights for curriculum design and future research. MethodsA survey was conducted among 206 students who completed the Advanced Health Informatics Analyst program between 2018 and 2022. The questionnaire comprised four categories: (1) general information about the respondent, (2) changes before and after program completion, (3) the impact of the program on professional practice, and (4) continuing education requirements. ResultsThe study received 161 (78.2%) responses from the 206 students. Graduates of the program had diverse academic backgrounds and consequently undertook various informatics tasks after their training. Most graduates (117/161, 72.7%) are now involved in tasks such as data preprocessing, visualizing results for better understanding, and report writing for data processing and analysis. Program participation significantly improved job performance (P ConclusionsThe integrated practical education program was effective in addressing the diverse needs of trainees from various fields, enhancing their capabilities, and preparing them for the evolving industry demands. This study emphasizes the value of providing specialized training in health informatics for graduates regardless of their discipline.

Objective: The aim of this investigation was to examine the impact of Taraxacum coreanum (known as dandelion) (TC) and TC mixtures with milk thistle (MT) or Aspergillus oryzae (AO) as feed additives on the immune response, milk quality, and milk production in Holstein cows over 6 weeks of administration. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two healthy Holstein dairy cows were provided 30 kg of total mixed ration (TMR) with no TC, 90 gm TC, 54 gm TC + 36 gm MT, or 54 gm TC + 36 gm AO 40% groups. The feed additives were supplied daily in two equal portions (per 45 gm) by topdressing the TMR for 6 weeks. Milk and blood samples were collected weekly. Results: In the TC-treated cows (TC, TC + MT, and TC + AO groups), significantly lower peripheral blood white blood cell (WBC) counts at 6 weeks and milk somatic cell counts (SCCs) at 4–6 weeks of administration were observed. Concentrations of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glu¬tathione peroxidase (GSH-px) were notably elevated in cows treated with TC for 4–6 weeks, while levels of proinflammatory cytokines concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and chemokine (IL-8) were significantly reduced in TC-treated cows after 3–6 weeks of administration. Conclusion: These results suggested that TC or a TC mixture with other medicinal herbs supple¬mentations enhanced the serum antioxidative activities and, consequently, might suppress the adverse immune response due to lower serum TNF-α and IL-8 release supported by lower WBC and SCC counts. Abstract This study aims to evaluate the safety of MK-7 produced by fermentation process using a Bacillus subtilis var. natto strain for human ingestion via acute oral toxicity, repeated dose 90-day oral toxicity, 28-day recovery test, and genotoxicity tests. The acute oral toxicity test results indicated that all subjects survived at the dose of 5000 mg/kg with no toxic effects. For the repeated dose 90-day oral toxicity test, MK-7 was administered to rats at 500, 1500, and 4500 mg/kg for 90 d. No abnormal findings were detected in clinical observations or in clinical pathological and histopathological examinations. The no-observed-adverse-effect level(NOAEL) was determined to be 4500 mg/kg/d, the maximum dose tested. For the evaluation of genotoxicity, reverse mutation, chromosomal aberration, and micronucleus tests were performed. In the reversion mutation test, vitamin K2 did not induce reversion in bacterial strains, and no chromosomal abnormality was observed in the chromosomal abnormality test using Chinese hamster lung cells. In the micronucleus test, micronuclei were not induced using ICR mouse bone marrow cells. All the toxicity test results suggest that vitamin K2 produced by fermentation processes using Bacillus subtilis var. natto induced no toxicological changes under the experimental conditions.

Abstract Bioresorbable neural implants based on emerging classes of biodegradable materials offer a promising solution to the challenges of secondary surgeries for removal of implanted devices required for existing neural implants. In this study, we introduce a fully bioresorbable flexible hybrid opto-electronic system for simultaneous electrophysiological recording and optogenetic stimulation. The flexible and soft device, composed of biodegradable materials, has a direct optical and electrical interface with the curved cerebral cortex surface while exhibiting excellent biocompatibility. Optimized to minimize light transmission losses and photoelectric artifact interference, the device was chronically implanted in the brain of transgenic mice and performed to photo-stimulate the somatosensory area while recording local field potentials. Thus, the presented hybrid neural implant system, comprising biodegradable materials, promises to provide monitoring and therapy modalities for versatile applications in biomedicine.

Abstract Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) can result in blindness if left untreated, and patients often require repeated anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections. Although, the treat-and-extend method is becoming popular to reduce vision loss attributed to recurrence, it may pose a risk of overtreatment. This study aimed to develop a deep learning model based on DenseNet201 to predict nAMD recurrence within 3 months after confirming dry-up 1 month following three loading injections in treatment-naïve patients. A dataset of 1076 spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) images from 269 patients diagnosed with nAMD was used. The performance of the model was compared with that of 6 ophthalmologists, using 100 randomly selected samples. The DenseNet201-based model achieved 53.0% accuracy in predicting nAMD recurrence using a single pre-injection image and 60.2% accuracy after viewing all the images immediately after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd injections. The model outperformed experienced ophthalmologists, with an average accuracy of 52.17% using a single pre-injection image and 53.3% after examining four images before and after three loading injections. In conclusion, the artificial intelligence model demonstrated a promising ability to predict nAMD recurrence using OCT images and outperformed experienced ophthalmologists. These findings suggest that deep learning models can assist in nAMD recurrence prediction, thus improving patient outcomes and optimizing treatment strategies.

Objectives: To update recent information on contamination levels of mycotoxins in South Korea. Materials and methods: A total of 208 samples sourced from the feeds of swine farms were collected. The contamination levels of mycotoxins, which are aflatoxin (Afla), ochratoxin A (OTA), deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), fumonisin (FUM), and T-2 toxin, were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Results: The detection levels of the total samples were 78.91% for DON, 75.24% for Afla, 47.02% for ZEN, 68.31% for FUM, and 5.94% for OTA and T-2, which were not detected at all. Most of the analyzed mycotoxins showed significant high occurrences in 47.02%–78.91% of the swine feed samples. 11 of the 152 alfa-positive samples exceeded the maximum residue limit (MRL) of Afla proposed by the Korean regulation. In the analysis of mycotoxin detection levels by growth stage, ZEN was found in the nursery stage at a remarkably high concentration level (126.46 ± 63.76 ppb), exceeding the MRL of ZEN for piglets proposed by the European Commission. This mycotoxin was also found in the samples from the gestation barn (89.04 ± 46.05 ppb) and the farrowing house (105.58 ± 94.12) at a high concentration level. Afla was found in the nursery stage at a high concentration (8.00 ± 2.22 ppb), approaching the MRL (10 ppb) of Afla proposed by the Korean regulation. Conclusion: These results indicate that many swine farms in South Korea are still exposed to mycotoxin risk, and special attention and surveillance are necessary for these mycotoxin risks in swine farms. ObjectiveArteritis refers to all infectious and non-infectious conditions that lead to inflammation of the arterial wall. However, little is known about its presence in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Most patients improved with steroids along with conservative treatments in a few studies. We report our experience with superior mesenteric artery (SMA) arteritis causing an aneurysm following COVID-19 infection.Case presentationA 66-year-old female patient who was infected with COVID-19 1 month prior presented with abdominal pain. A computed tomography scan revealed proximal SMA arteritis. Although preliminary antibacterial treatment was initiated, the follow-up CT revealed an aggressive and fast-growing 5.7-cm SMA aneurysm. Subsequently, an open interposition bypass of the SMA aneurysm was performed successfully. As the specimens retrieved during surgery showed no bacterial colonization in the tissue or blood cultures, the patient was discharged without complications.ConclusionsThe mechanism of arteritis in patients with COVID-19 has not been elucidated. In the absence of evidence of bacterial infection in arteritis, it is necessary to consider the possibility of viral infection caused by COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic era and start with high-dose steroid therapy promptly.

Abstract Mo2C is an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, Mo2C is a poor electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, two different elements, namely Co and Fe, are incorporated in Mo2C that, therefore, has a finely tuned electronic structure, which is not achievable by incorporation of any one of the metals. Consequently, the resulting electrocatalyst Co0.8Fe0.2–Mo2C‐80 displayed excellent OER catalytic performance, which is evidenced by a low overpotential of 214.0 (and 246.5) mV to attain a current density of 10 (and 50) mA cm−2, an ultralow Tafel slope of 38.4 mV dec−1, and long‐term stability in alkaline medium. Theoretical data demonstrates that Co0.8Fe0.2–Mo2C‐80 requires the lowest overpotential (1.00 V) for OER and Co centers to be the active sites. The ultrahigh catalytic performance of the electrocatalyst is attributed to the excellent intrinsic catalytic activity due to high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area, large electrochemically active surface area, small Tafel slope, and low charge‐transfer resistance.

Abstract Background This study aims to improve nursing students’ ability to care for critically ill patients through education in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) nursing. Methods This study developed a virtual reality (VR) simulation program for the five-step ECMO nursing of the Analysis, Design, Development, Implement, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model and used an equivalent control group pre-test and post-test no-synchronized design to verify the effect. The participants of this study were fourth-year nursing students enrolled in nursing departments at three universities in Seoul, Gangwon, and Gyeonggi in South Korea; it included 66 participants, 33 in each of the experimental and control groups. The program consisted of pre-training, orientation, VR simulation, and debriefing. Results The interaction effect of the intervention and control groups with time points using the ECMO nursing VR simulation program was rejected due to no statistically significant difference in knowledge (F = 1.41, p = .251), confidence (F = 1.97, p = .144), and clinical reasoning capacity (F = 2.85, p = .061). With its distinctive multiple electrochemical reaction, iron vanadate (FeV3O9.2.6H2O) is considered as a promising electrode material for energy storage. However, it has a relatively low practical specific capacitance. Therefore, using the low temperature sol–gel synthesis process, transition metal doping was used to enhance the electrochemical performance of layered structured FeV3O9.2.6H2O (FVO). According to this study, FVO doped with transition metals with larger interlayer spacing exhibited superior electrochemical performance than undoped FVO. The Mn-doped FVO electrode showed the highest specific capacitance and retention of 143 Fg−1 and 87%, respectively, while the undoped FVO showed 78 Fg−1 and 54%.

Until now, crystalline NiCo2S4 and its composites have demonstrated improved performance in supercapacitor applications compared to their oxide analogues due to their relatively higher electrical conductivity and multifaceted redox reaction. However, amorphous phase materials have recently shown promise in electrochemical energy storage systems. This work reports on amorphous NiCo2S4 with the help of urea via the hydrothermal method. It was noted that urea not only aided the amorphous formation but also served as a nitrogen precursor. In comparison, amorphous NiCo2S4 demonstrated a higher nitrogen atom% of 5.9 compared to 4.49 for crystalline NiCo2S4. Furthermore, the amorphous NiCo2S4 electrode exhibited superior electrochemical performance, with a specific capacitance of ~3506 F g−1, which was higher than the cNCS electrode’s specific capacitance of ~2185 F g−1 at 2 A g−1. Additionally, aNCS in a two-electrode asymmetric supercapacitor exhibited a specific capacitance and an energy density of ~196 F g−1 and 56 Wh kg−1, respectively.

Abstract Strong circularly polarized excitation opens up the possibility to generate and control effective magnetic fields in solid state systems, e.g., via the optical inverse Faraday effect or the phonon inverse Faraday effect. While these effects rely on material properties that can be tailored only to a limited degree, plasmonic resonances can be fully controlled by choosing proper dimensions and carrier concentrations. Plasmon resonances provide new degrees of freedom that can be used to tune or enhance the light-induced magnetic field in engineered metamaterials. Here we employ graphene disks to demonstrate light-induced transient magnetic fields from a plasmonic circular current with extremely high efficiency. The effective magnetic field at the plasmon resonance frequency of the graphene disks (3.5 THz) is evidenced by a strong ( ~ 1°) ultrafast Faraday rotation ( ~ 20 ps). In accordance with reference measurements and simulations, we estimated the strength of the induced magnetic field to be on the order of 0.7 T under a moderate pump fluence of about 440 nJ cm−2.

Abstract Metal nanoparticle-organic interfaces are common but remain elusive for controlling reactions due to the complex interactions of randomly formed ligand-layers. This paper presents an approach for enhancing the selectivity of catalytic reactions by constructing a skin-like few-nanometre ultrathin crystalline porous covalent organic overlayer on a plasmonic nanoparticle surface. This organic overlayer features a highly ordered layout of pore openings that facilitates molecule entry without any surface poisoning effects and simultaneously endows favourable electronic effects to control molecular adsorption–desorption. Conformal organic overlayers are synthesised through the plasmonic oxidative activation and intermolecular covalent crosslinking of molecular units. We develop a light-operated multicomponent interfaced plasmonic catalytic platform comprising Pd-modified gold nanoparticles inside hollow silica to achieve the highly efficient and selective semihydrogenation of alkynes. This approach demonstrates a way to control molecular adsorption behaviours on metal surfaces, breaking the linear scaling relationship and simultaneously enhancing activity and selectivity.

Abstract Atomically‐dispersed copper sites coordinated with nitrogen‐doped carbon (Cu–N–C) can provide novel possibilities to enable highly selective and active electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions. However, the construction of optimal local electronic structures for nitrogen‐coordinated Cu sites (Cu–N4) on carbon remains challenging. Here, we synthesized the Cu–N–C catalysts with atomically‐dispersed edge‐hosted Cu–N4 sites (Cu–N4C8) located in a micropore between two graphitic sheets via a facile method to control the concentration of metal precursor. Edge‐hosted Cu–N4C8 catalysts outperformed the previously reported M–N–C catalysts for CO2‐to‐CO conversion, achieving a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 96%, a CO current density of –8.97 mA cm–2 at –0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and over FECO of 90% from –0.6 to –1.0 V versus RHE. Computational studies revealed that the micropore of the graphitic layer in edge‐hosted Cu–N4C8 sites causes the d‐orbital energy level of the Cu atom to shift upward, which in return decreases the occupancy of antibonding states in the *COOH binding. This research suggests new insights into tailoring the locally coordinated structure of the electrocatalyst at the atomic scale to achieve highly selective electrocatalytic reactions.

Recent emerging studies have demonstrated numerous critical roles of exosomes in cell-to-cell signaling. We investigated exosomes in the aqueous humor of glaucoma patients and controls and compared their characteristics with other biomarkers such as cytokines. Glaucoma patients exhibited higher exosome particle counts and smaller sizes compared to controls. Higher exosome density was correlated with more severe visual field loss. Conversely, concentrations of aqueous humor cytokines, particularly PD-L1, were primarily associated with intraocular pressure, and none of the cytokines showed a significant association with visual field damage. This may reflect the characteristics of exosomes, which are advantageous for crossing various biological barriers. Exosomes may contain more information about glaucoma functional damage occurring in the retina or optic nerve head. This highlights the potential importance of exosomes as signaling mediators distinct from other existing molecules.

AbstractObjectives Focused ultrasound (FUS) therapy has emerged as a promising noninvasive solution for tumor ablation. Accurate monitoring and guidance of ultrasound energy is crucial for effective FUS treatment. Although ultrasound (US) imaging is a well-suited modality for FUS monitoring, US-guided FUS (USgFUS) faces challenges in achieving precise monitoring, leading to unpredictable ablation shapes and a lack of quantitative monitoring. The demand for precise FUS monitoring heightens when complete tumor ablation involves controlling multiple sonication procedures.Methods To address these challenges, we propose an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted USgFUS framework, incorporating an AI segmentation model with B-mode ultrasound imaging. This method labels the ablated regions distinguished by the hyperechogenicity effect, potentially bolstering FUS guidance. We evaluated our proposed method using the Swin-Unet AI architecture, conducting experiments with a USgFUS setup on chicken breast tissue.Results Our results showed a 93% accuracy in identifying ablated areas marked by the hyperechogenicity effect in B-mode imaging.Conclusion Our findings suggest that AI-assisted ultrasound monitoring can significantly improve the precision and control of FUS treatments, suggesting a crucial advancement toward the development of more effective FUS treatment strategies.

BackgroundAlthough previous research has made substantial progress in developing high-performance artificial intelligence (AI)–based computer-aided diagnosis (AI-CAD) systems in various medical domains, little attention has been paid to developing and evaluating AI-CAD system in ophthalmology, particularly for diagnosing retinal diseases using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. ObjectiveThis diagnostic study aimed to determine the usefulness of a proposed AI-CAD system in assisting ophthalmologists with the diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), which is known to be difficult to diagnose, using OCT images. MethodsFor the training and evaluation of the proposed deep learning model, 1693 OCT images were collected and annotated. The data set included 929 and 764 cases of acute and chronic CSC, respectively. In total, 66 ophthalmologists (2 groups: 36 retina and 30 nonretina specialists) participated in the observer performance test. To evaluate the deep learning algorithm used in the proposed AI-CAD system, the training, validation, and test sets were split in an 8:1:1 ratio. Further, 100 randomly sampled OCT images from the test set were used for the observer performance test, and the participants were instructed to select a CSC subtype for each of these images. Each image was provided under different conditions: (1) without AI assistance, (2) with AI assistance with a probability score, and (3) with AI assistance with a probability score and visual evidence heatmap. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were used to measure the diagnostic performance of the model and ophthalmologists. ResultsThe proposed system achieved a high detection performance (99% of the area under the curve) for CSC, outperforming the 66 ophthalmologists who participated in the observer performance test. In both groups, ophthalmologists with the support of AI assistance with a probability score and visual evidence heatmap achieved the highest mean diagnostic performance compared with that of those subjected to other conditions (without AI assistance or with AI assistance with a probability score). Nonretina specialists achieved expert-level diagnostic performance with the support of the proposed AI-CAD system. ConclusionsOur proposed AI-CAD system improved the diagnosis of CSC by ophthalmologists, which may support decision-making regarding retinal disease detection and alleviate the workload of ophthalmologists.

This study aimed to investigate effects of long-term probiotic supplementation on gut microbiota and growth performance in health weaned piglets. The non-probiotic group (N-PrB) was fed only a basal diet, while the probiotic group (PrB) was fed a basal diet + probiotic combination (E. faecium 1.6 × 108 CFU/g, B. subtilis 2.0 × 108 CFU/g, S. cerevisiae 3.0 × 108 CFU/g). The probiotics combination was provided to the PrB, mixing with the basal diet in 5 kg/ton. As a result, the PrB exhibited significantly improved weight gain compared to the N-PrB (p = 0.00991). In the gut microbiome analysis, the PrB exhibited a significant increasing tendency of α-diversity compared to those of the N-PrB (p < 0.01). In the bacterial relative abundance changes in bacteria comprising the gut microbiota, Ruminococcaceae (p = 0.00281) and Prevotella (p = 0.00687) tended to significantly increase in the PrB, but decreased in the N-PrB. The Eubaterium coprostanoligenes group exhibited an increasing tendency in both groups, but tended to increase more significantly in the PrB compared to the N-PrB (p = 0.00681). Muribaculaceae tended to significantly increase in the N-PrB, but decreased in the PrB (p = 0.002779). In this study, significant differences on the gut microbiome were found according to the probiotics supplementation in the weaned piglets and these gut microbiome changes appeared to improve the growth performance.

Purpose Laparoscopic posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (LPRA) is a surgical method that accesses the adrenal gland through the back. The aim of this study was to report initial experience of LPRA and evaluate possibilities for surgical application. Methods From March 2018 to December 2019, a total of 30 consecutive patients diagnosed with adrenal tumor underwent surgical treatment at Pusan National University Hospital were enrolled. Clinicopathologic features and various peri- and postoperative parameters were analyzed by retrospective medical record review. The mean age of the patients was 48.20±13.66 years. Results The mean body mass index (BMI) was 25.50±4.30 kg/m2. Primary hyperaldosteronism was the most frequently preoperative diagnosed disease (n=13, 43.4%), followed by adrenal incidentaloma (n=8, 26.6%), Cushing syndrome (n=5, 16.6%) and pheochromocytoma (n=4, 13.3%). The mean size of postoperative adrenal tumor was 2.72±1.76 cm. The mean operating time was 162±58.14 minutes. Among the 30 patients, 28 patients underwent total adrenalectomy (93.3%) and two patients underwent cortical sparing adrenalectomy (6.7%). When LPRA was performed for patients with BMI >23.16 kg/m2, the operating time was longer than the average (P=0.016). Conclusion LPRA was suitable and safe for patients with benign adrenal tumors. BMI, retroperitoneal fat density and postoperative adrenal weight may be related to the operating time, so they should be considered when deciding on a surgical method for adrenalectomy.
