In a model artificial multiferroic system consisting of a (011)-oriented ferroelectric Pb(Mg,Nb,Ti)O3 substrate intimately coupled to an epitaxial ferromagnetic (La,Sr)MnO3 film, electric field pulse sequences of less than 6 kV/cm induce large, reversible, and bistable remanent strains. The magnetic anisotropy symmetry reversibly switches from a highly anisotropic two-fold state to a more isotropic one, with concomitant changes in resistivity. Anisotropy changes at the scale of a single ferromagnetic domain were measured using X-ray microscopy, with electric-field dependent magnetic domain reversal showing that the energy barrier for magnetization reversal is drastically lowered. Free energy calculations confirm this barrier lowering by up to 70% due to the anisotropic strain changes generated by the substrate. Thus, we demonstrate that an electric field pulse can be used to 'set' and 'reset' the magnetic anisotropy orientation and resistive state in the film, as well as to lower the magnetization reversal barrier, showing a promising route towards electric-field manipulation of multifunctional nanostructures at room temperature.

Adult educators have strong beliefs. This will surprise no-one, but where do their beliefs come from, and how do they influence future development of their teaching practice? Drawing on my PhD research, I explore the multi-directional relationship between teaching beliefs and practices, considering the influence of past traditions of adult education and personal philosophies of teaching. Through interviews, journaling and a focus group, ten practitioners from Melbourne's Centre for Adult Education explored the sticky questions of how their philosophies developed and how these philosophies interconnect with more recent notions of good practice. Some research suggests that teaching practice is fundamentally shaped by beliefs that are stable and resistant to change, yet these practitioners revealed a dynamic, multi-directional relationship between teaching beliefs and practices. They were influenced by their own past experiences of learning and some of the broad traditions of adult education, yet arguably of greater interest was the finding that adult educators' philosophies of teaching were also influenced by their current practice, their interaction with learners, and the challenges of the day-to-day learning context. The words and experiences of these practitioners demonstrate that deliberate engagement with educators' beliefs may enhance authentic development of their teaching practice. Current directions in government policy for adult education are firmly fixed on skilling a national workforce, and naturally require adult educators' teaching practice to reflect this. What can be expected when this irresistible force meets the potentially immovable object of adult educators' teaching philosophies?

Magnetoelectric materials have great potential to revolutionize electronic devices due to the coupling of their electric and magnetic properties. Thickness varying La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO)/PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) heterostructures were built and measured in this article by valence sensitive x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The sizing effects of the heterostructures on the LSMO/PZT magnetoelectric interfaces were investigated through the behavior of Mn valence, a property associated with the LSMO magnetization. We found that Mn valence increases with both LSMO and PZT thickness. Piezoresponse force microscopy revealed a transition from monodomain to polydomain structure along the PZT thickness gradient. The ferroelectric surface charge may change with domain structure and its effects on Mn valence were simulated using a two-orbital double-exchange model. The screening of ferroelectric surface charge increases the electron charges in the interface region, and greatly changes the interfacial Mn valence, which likely plays a leading role in the interfacial magnetoelectric coupling. The LSMO thickness dependence was examined through the combination of two detection modes with drastically different attenuation depths. The different length scales of these techniques' sensitivity to the atomic valence were used to estimate the depth dependence Mn valence. A smaller interfacial Mn valence than the bulk was found by globally fitting the experimental results.

The tunability of Ar+ ion irradiation of Co/Pd multilayers has been employed to create depth-dependent perpendicular anisotropy gradients. By adjusting the Ar+ kinetic energy and fluence, the depth and lateral density of the local structural modification are controlled. First-order reversal curve analysis through X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and conventional magnetometry studies shows that the local structural damage weakens the perpendicular anisotropy near the surface, leading to a magnetization tilting towards the in-plane direction. The ion irradiation method is complementary to and may be used in conjunction with, other synthesis approaches to maximize the anisotropy gradient. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

A recent theoretical study [Phys. Rev. B 85, 121411(R) (2012)] predicted a thickness limit below which ideal polar cuprates turn nonpolar driven by the associated electrostatic instability. Here we demonstrate this possibility by inducing a structural transformation from the bulk planar to chainlike structure upon reducing the SrCuO2 repeat thickness in SrCuO2/SrTiO3 superlattices with unit-cell precision. Our results, based on structural investigation by x-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, demonstrate that the oxygen sublattice can essentially be built by design. In addition, the electronic structure of the chainlike structure, as studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, shows the signature for preferential hole occupation in the Cu 3d(3z2-r2) orbital, which is different from the planar case.

A review of the catalogue "Albrecht Dürer: Gravure et Renaissance," by Mathieu Deldicque and Caroline Vrand is presented, which features prints by artist Dürer, including "St. Jerome in His Study."

Background: The utility of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) in predicting the intentions of care staff to encourage healthy eating behaviour in those they supported was examined. Method: A quantitative, within-participant, questionnaire based design was used with 112 carers to assess the performance of two TPB models. The first contained the variables: attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. The second had additional variables of self efficacy and self identity. Results: Model 1 accounted for 31% of the variance with all three variables being significant predictors. Adding variables increased the overall predictive power of the model by 4%, but resulted in a reduction in the predictive power of the individual variables. Conclusion: The results suggests the TPB is a useful model for predicting carer intentions in relation to the diet of those they support, with their perceptions of the attitudes of others towards healthy eating being a key influential factor. Ways in which this may inform interventions to improve the overall health of people with intellectual disabilities are discussed.
